The Porcine Oddyssey #96: I’m so sorry Dolfans…

Dear Dolfans,

DeepBall

I’m sorry…

I know I haven’t been around much.  I’m sorry for abandoning you.

You didn’t deserve this…

You see, I was crushed.

Marino Throw

When I was a young little football I enjoyed the fruits of Marino to Clayton and Marino to Duper: 20, 30, 40 and 50 yard completions.

I thought it would last forever.

But all good things must come to an end

After 1999 I had a really tough time.  No more Marino.  It was like I didn’t exist anymore.

I started drinking a lot.  Anything to ease the pain.  I didn’t want Dolfans to see me anymore.

DeepBallHardTimes

Sure I made some appearances with Jay Fiedler.  But from Fiedler to Marino…well…its just not the same…I’m sure you noticed.  And things only got worse.

MIAMI - AUGUST 12: Quarterback Daunte Culpepper #8 of the Miami Dolphins warms-up for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Dolphin Stadium on August 12, 2006 in Miami, Florida. The Jaguars won 31-26. (Photo by Doug Benc/Getty Images)

In 2007 it didn’t seem like things could get any worse.  I hit and all time low.

Pennington Throw

Thankfully Chad Pennington helped me pull out of my funk.

The Dolphins were winning again.  They were in the playoffs.

Unfortunately I still had a drinking problem.  So every time you saw me I looked like a dying duck

ChadHenneWhen the Dolfans switched to the strong arm Chad Henne, I thought all my problems were solved.

It was going to be Henne to Ginn deep.  No one would stop it.

But Ginn had an affair with the sideline and Henne only had eyes for the check down.

WallaceNOgood

So I abandoned you.

I know you thought I would come back when the Dolphins spent big money on Mike Wallace.

But I wasn’t ready and I stood you up.

TannehillScrimmage

But things are different now .

During Sunday’s practice, Ryan Tannehill hit Lamar Miller for 35 yards.  I know, I know, that’s a running back.  So next there was a 40 yard pass to Rishard Matthews.  Followed by another 40 yard pass to Jarvis Landry.  And then another deep one to Matthews.

I’m back.  I’m sorry I left you Dolfans.  Will you forgive me?  Will you have me back?

Yours Truly,

The Deep Ball

    Play NFL Fantasy Football!

Manuel completed five-of-11 passes for 105 yards and the lone touchdown, coming after all three of the quarterbacks had taken turns with the first-, second- and third-team offenses.

Matt Cassel was just two of six for 27 yards. The play-calling concentrated on establishing the run when he was under center with the first-team offense.

Tyrod Taylor showed glimpses of talent, going eight of 13 for 83 yards and another 31 rushing yards. Coach Rex Ryan was disappointed, however, that Taylor missed a few throws”.

    ———————————–
Piggy Diggs had a punt return for what should have been a touchdown. They called him out on like the 1 but even on the rplay you can see he avoided stepping on the line and extended across the plane for a TD. Call wasnt overturned because it wasn’t obviously wrong, but either way it was a spectacular return. He also has apparently been really showing off in practices, and has become a good 3rd down receiver for them. Id bet he pays dividends for them straight out.

  39. D's avatar D says:

I think Matthews is earning his spot, and probably a larger piece in the rotation. Matthews has always had the talent he just had shitty peer leadership that rubbed off on him and caused a somwhat shitty attitude toward him commitment to the team. I think Philbin did a good job setting that straight in that last meeting they had after the trade request rumors.

Omar is a shit and he has people he likes and those he doesnt give a shit about and he plays his reporting to fit his agenda. Listening to him and building your feelings on how to feel about ANY position on the team is folly, and you would be better off waiting until the games and seeing it with your own eyes. Trust the coaches, not the coconut.

I think the last, and sixth spot, for a WR is going to come down to Preston or Hazel. Both have shown well in practices. Preston has the size but i think Hazel is the more versatile receiver and that’s not to be over looked. Will be a down to the wire decision im sure, one of the closest battles of the TC.

  40. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

That’s why Ken doesn’t like Pouncey (and to some extent my gripe with Pouncey). He’s a me first guy. Even his comments the other day about “I’m trying to motivate others so that I don’t have to move to G” is a comment implying that he’s only helping others to avoid being a G or else he wouldn’t have attached the “so i dont have to move to OG” part at the end, lol.

  41. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    StangerX,
LOL, Belichick will probably ask the refs to check the Fins balls during the first Pats-Fins meeting just so he can fuck with Philbin & Tannehill’s psyche (the way managers in baseball piss off pitchers/managers by asking the umps to check the pitchers balls for any shenanigans just to get into the players/managers head).

    Tim,
I’m not reading much into the OL woes which are being overstated.
Something has to give; Tannehill is reportedly playing well and the OL is still crap?
Could the unit play better? always but i’m not so sure there is much to talk about regarding OL considering Douglas is brand new to OL in the NFL and has only had a week worth of contact play. He has a month to show he can start right away and I’m confident that will happen which takes care of LG. Linkenbach backed up the RG position at KC last year and started some games there and perhaps he can just play RG until Dallas Thomas can heal up or if Turner can develop there instead of on the left side.
It’s too early to complain about the OG IMO. Even if Mathis is an option; he’s never played RG and i’d rather not see Douglas moved to the right side (a position he’s never played) considering he’s the future and Mathis is a rental option.

There’s one image of the field facing the 10 yard line with no players on the field; it was an attempt to catch Marino (in a white shirt) standing at the sideline on the far side at about the 12 yard line (Jason Taylor was next to him in shorts and aqua shirt). I took pics/video with my iphone so the zoom was not good enough to see those two up close from where I was at.

    Boulder,
Agree, the D failed big time. Fins went 8-8 in 2013 with an O that ranked 26th in pts scored; D ranked 8th in pts allowed. In 2014, they went 8-8 again but with an O ranked 11th in pts scored but D ranked 20th in points allowed. I don’t see a regression in order on O so with the YR/YR changes to the DL and addition by subtraction at LB (Wheeler etc) and more depth at DB; the Fins D will probably carry the team in more games than last year and get the Fins into the playoffs.

Wells was a sixth-round pick in May. A 2014 undrafted free agent, Groy appeared in four games as a rookie, making three starts. He held his own in 237 snaps. He provides depth for the Pats’ shaky guard situation.

Also keep in mind that the above post about the Pats trading this years 6th round pick to the Bears for a 2014 UDFA OG speaks volumes about Evan Mathis, who might want to lower his price considerably NOW!

I think we’ll be ok without him as the PS goes on.

Browns LT Joe Thomas got rolled up in Monday’s practice, but “should be fine.”
Thomas’ “injury” created a bit of a commotion on social media, but he’s escaped anything serious. One of the best players in all of football, Thomas has never missed a game in eight NFL seasons.

    Tim,
I’m not reading much into the OL woes which are being overstated.

Al i think, at least in my opinion, you arent reading too much into whats being reported, im just saying whats being reported is slanted. I do believe they overemphasize the OL woes because they are playing off concerns of the fans. I think they do tis for the clicks and the persistant checking by fans to see if things get better. What better way to keep people glued to their seats than give them a cliffhanger like “are the OL problems going to remain”. Its a cheap tactic by people with no real skill bringing worthwhile stories, though i cant blame them because at this point they are just trying to keep up with the rest of the shitty “blorters” who cover the Dolphins.

I know its all you have to go off of, but i would just say hang in there and see what you can tell from the PS games, these guys have been reporting the OL issues since before they even took a snap in OTA’s…its their bread and butter story… Im not saying we dont have OL issue but id wait until you can see it with your own eyes to use the words they like to, like catastrophic.

D, did state that well….all journalism seems to carry degrees of sensationalism, especially in the Dolphins media and other liberal media 😉
