Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Preseason Week 1

AskMike

Before I get down to Ask Mike business, I just want to thank Piggy and Sonny for all of their hard work, and all the time and effort they have made to keep all of us entertained and educated about our team. I think we should all give them a big thanks, they have been pumping out article after article,  day in and day out for quite some time now. Not many Miami Dolphins blogs can boast that. Thank you!

from Al

Q – Mike,
I might as well get this question out of the way for ya,
What do you
think about the Dolphins TE situation? LOL (queue the Lynch venom)

I’m not totally shocked that Lynch’s tenure has come to an end. Last year he was on IR, and this year, he didn’t really show anything that gave the coaches a reason to want him on our roster, while Jake Stoneburner and Tim Semisch have shown some promise. Stoneburner made a couple of nice catches in the preseason game against the Bears, and Semisch is an intriguing player with size, 6’8” 266 lbs. I think we all knew that Lynch’s stronger point was blocking as opposed to receiving, but with Sims here who fills that role, I think we needed some diversity.

The biggest issue for us this year at TE, is the health of Jordan Cameron. He’s an all-pro TE when he’s healthy. The problem is, he’s too often NOT healthy. In 2014 he played in 10 games starting 9. in 13, easily his best season, he played in 15 games starting 14. He finished that year with 80 receptions for 917 yards, and 7 TD’s. That’s what I’d love to see from him this year. He does that, anything else we get is gravy! Sims has come a long way from when he was first a Miami Dolphin, and I think he could start if he had to, but he doesn’t have the talent and athleticism of Jordan Cameron. Cameron is a stud TE. Stoneburner could be a decent 3rd TE, and I do believe they like the size and potential of Tim Semisch. We may carry as many as 4-5 TE’s, last year we carried 4. Considering the health risk of Cameron, we might take 5.

Q – Mike. E.

I have to ask you this as you have seemed to be OL fixated in recent years.
Have the Phins done enough to put together a solid OL?
Do you think we still need to sign and overpay for Evan Mathis or a non ZBS OG in Andy Levitre?
I won’t bother you with inane comments regarding the newest Yet TE. I’m sure another will ask you.
Thanks,
Lee (uwantwat)

Thanks for the question and for participating Lee. Glad to have you on the blog!

To answer your question, I’m not sure yet, but I think it’s pretty obvious to anyone who knows me that I don’t think we’ve properly addressed the O-line. Too many questions abound. Sure, everyone wants to take for granted that #71 will be the Branden Albert he’s been for his entire career. He had major knee reconstruction. He tore both his ACL and MCL joints, and that was November 9th. Consider the fact that we’re talking about a guy who needs to remain stable and endure tons of force in the trenches, and a guy that weighs about 320 lbs, that’s a lot to ask. He might be back at some point, maybe even game 1, but will he be the same guy he’s been? I’m not sure. So that leaves Jason Fox at LT. Jamil Douglas looked OK in a very short sample of play, against a team learning a new defense. I’m not sure he’s ready for prime time, but time will tell. Same goes for Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner. They didn’t have a full game of play yet, and they haven’t played a team yet with a stout DL.

I feel like this years team has “We’re going for it!” written all over it. They brought in Suh, gave Tannehill a huge contract, signed Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills. If we’re going for it, why not finish the sundae with a nice cherry on top, and bring in the solid OG Evan Mathis. We will be severely capstrung next season, I realize that, but what a a shame it would be to have everything working, except the O-line. This year I would have taken an OT/OG in the first RD because of the fact that Albert may not be 100%, and also because our OG’s were unimpressive. We waited until the 4th RD to take Jamil Douglas, and I think it was too little too late. Stay tuned!

from Ken

Q – How many games will Brady actually serve if any for his suspension from deflate gate? And what will be the Pats record in those games?

I think he will serve 4 games. It disgusts me that the courts are involved in this nonsense, and frankly, his latest stance that he wants to be punished for non cooperation rather than cheating tells me how selfish he is. It’s all about him and his legacy. He doesn’t want it tarnished, well he should have thought of that before breaking the damn rules!

I think even if the courts get involved (and they are), they will find the NFL has enough evidence (by their own rules) to suspend Brady for as long as they have, and he will serve the entire 4 game suspension.

I think Garoppolo will be 0-1 facing the Steelers. I think Garoppolo gets Buffoppoloed against the Buffalo Bills defense, so 0-2. I think The Patriots, despite playing with a shellshocked Garoppolo, they manage to edge out the upstart Jags by a FG or less to go to 1-2. Then the Patriots go to Texas to face the Cowboys, and Jerry Jones gets the last laugh, as the Bradyless Patriots finish 1-3 without their cheating QB.

So there you have it Ken, 1-3, with a chance at 0-4 if the Jaguars are as improved as I think they could be.

Q – We are all excited about what Suh can do for this defense.   Just that one exceptional guy creates opportunities for the others on the D-Line and takes pressure off the LBs and DBs. Hopefully it will give them a chance to think more about making plays rather than just stopping them.   Without even going into where else his money could have gone, are you concerned about the one hugely important egg in one very large basket factor?   Just as much as he helps the D, if he goes down we’ll be left with a less talented D than the one that was at best average end of last season.

stanger

Definitely concerned Jon. You look around the NFL, and not one other team has as much money tied up into a defensive lineman. The Dolphins have approximately 17-18% of their salary dedicated to Suh, where the 2nd highest is Tampa Bay Buccaneers DT Gerald McCoy, who takes up 8% of their salary cap. His 6 YR/$95,200M contract is plenty, but the biggest cap hit McCoy has was last year at $21.3M, but through the next few years, his salary cap maxes out at $14.6M this year, and goes down from there. Suh on the other hand has a cap crushing $28.6M next season, and then $22.1 and $22.4M respectively in 2018 and 2019. Consider that Ryan Tannehill’s new contract gives us a hit of $11.6M next season, and goes up to whopping $20.3M in 2017, and stays right around there through to 2020, that’s 2 players eating a whole lot of cap space.

Suh really does change the face of our defense, and if his play, and demeanor become infectious with his teammates, and he exceeds his play with the Detroit Lions, it may be worth it. Of course an injury would be devastating, so I won’t even discuss that. It’s always a risk giving a huge contract to a player, but sometimes they make the difference. Look what LeBron did with the Heat!

Everyone on the defense will benefit from Suh being there, we just haven’t had a player like him. I’d be shocked if Wake, Vernon, Fede, Shelby and anyone else playing DT don’t have better numbers with Suh on the field. Most of all I want Suh here in December, where Joe gets _ _ _ _ _ y, and the rest of the team _ _ _ _ _ s.  Suh won’t allow that!

from UK

Q – Hey Mike,

Good to see you back in the chair as it means another season is right round the corner.

So, it looks like the Jets and Pats are going to start handicapped and the Bills are still the Bills. Does this mean we win the East for the first time in a very long time?

Cheers
UK

You know what UK, I really, and truly believe it does! I do think it’s our time, and I also believe that if our O-line really isn’t working, we’re going to cave in and sign Evan Mathis. I think we’ve come too far to stop now. The Bills still scare me, because they’ve beaten us without a QB before. They’re defense is ferocious, and as scary as our own is now. They also feel like they can beat us, because they have. We need to change that, and with the growth of Tannehill, and the addition of Suh, I think we will.

The Jets may not necessarily be handicapped by the loss of Geno. Fitzpatrick is also an inconsistent QB, but he’s consistently better than Geno. Geno may have had a higher ceiling, but I think Fitz gives them a better chance each week than Geno. Despite that, We have a better team than the Jets, so I do think this is the year for us to come out on top.

The Patriots losing Brady will be a huge hit, and hopefully he misses the 4 games he should miss, and his suspension isn’t reduced by the courts, who really have no business in the NFL’s business. That’s total bullsh!t. Garoppolo is not going to lead that team like Brady, and hearing at some point earlier this year that Garoppolo will still be the best QB in the AFC East really pissed me off! Sickened me actually. The lack of respect to Geno Smith (Just kidding!), the lack of respect shown to Ryan Tannehill in that statement, and I can’t even remember who said it, but it was replayed on NFL radio, is just absurd. Ryan Tannehill may finish as a better QB this year than Tom Brady, never mind his understudy Jimmy.

Q – Dear Mike E.
I heard John Clayton call our offense a Don Coryell style offense recently.  He also said we are no longer a west coast offense.  Do you think that is true?  Did Philbin abandon his roots?  Any idea what Clayton means?  How would you describe our offense?

Also, can we agree that piggies are bound to rule the Earth one day?

– Pigsgerald

Is John Clayton still alive? Wow! No seriously, I think we can all understand this, especially watching last year, where we threw the ball far more than we ran it. However, I don’t believe for a second that that’s the formula for this years offense. I think Philbin would prefer to run more, but we have to be effective doing it, and have the horses to do it. I hope Ajayi gets healthy, and shows he’s ready for the NFL, because I like the tandem of MillerTime, Ajayi and Williams. I get the feeling after watching the game the other day that LaMike is gonna be LaGone. He didn’t show me a thing on returns, and he went down so easily running into the back of his own man, Jordan Kovacs, and Kovacs wasn’t pushed backwards either.

Keep in mind that Ajayi is a 2nd RD talent, and for a RB that’s a compliment. Yes, he was drafted in the 5th due to medical concerns, but those concerns aren’t immediate concerns, but long term concerns. I think if he can get healthy, he will flash and be part of the RB group that should put up some nice yardage totals. I don’t think we’re going to pass 35-40 times per game, and run 15-20 again. I think we might some games, but not as a general strategy. I think we’ll run when we can run, and pass when we can pass, whichever works best against whatever defense we play each week.

This whole deflategate thing is so tired. It’s devolved into lawyers arguing over what the definition of “is” is. Bottom line is Brady and the patsies will use any advantage they think they can get away with as long as they gain a perceived edge. No matter the outcome of this, that’s their legacy.

drg, maybe splitting hairs here but every team will use any advantage they think they can get away with. that is the nature of sports. the pats didnt do that, they cheated. there is a big difference. they didnt try to find a weakness and exploit it, they took the rules and violated them.

Tires definitely deflate in the colder weather. But . . .

It takes time, it won’t deflate within the time of a football game (3 hours), and a football doesn’t have 2500-6000 lbs pushing down on it, squeezing the air out. In fact, the football isn’t really supporting any weight in the majority of its use, so the comparison really doesn’t work for me. Even if Brady’s suspension is cut short, or eliminated completely, in my mind, he, and his team tried to skirt the rules, and got caught, which makes him a cheater. Criminals often plea bargain, but they’re still criminals nonetheless.

  24. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Miami Dolphins receiver Jarvis Landry does not seem fond of the term “slot receiver.”

That is where Landry did most of his damage last season when he led the Dolphins with 84 receptions as a rookie. However, Landry does not want to be defined by that in his second season and is looking to grow his role.

“I think he’s got a chance to do that. He’s lined up in a variety of spots. He’s done some things outside,” Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said recently. “I think his natural home base is still inside, but he certainly has shown the ability [to do more], he’s a real quality route-runner. He can run different routes that you want on the outside. The beauty of him is he doesn’t slow down when he’s coming out of cuts. So if he can get on top of the (defensive back), he doesn’t waste any time whatsoever. That’s really, to me, is what makes him effective.”

“Absolutely, I’m excited about the opportunity that I’ve been getting,” Landry said recently. “I think for me now is just try to continue to develop, continue to evolve as we move forward schematically and try to make plays. I think that’s what we all have to do, to compete at a high level.”

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Regardless what you call him…..Landry is a perfect fit for this system. We want players who can do it all, even if they ain’t all-world necessarily in one aspect.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He’ll be fine, still has growing to do as a complete receiver.
Heck, most receivers take 2-3 years if at all, just to be able to produce meaningful snaps.

You ASKed Mike, I answered. If you want to get what you want to hear, Ask Roderick. 🙂

  27. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Walt Aikens:
The second-year defensive back worked in Delmas’ place with the first team during Thursday’s second (and final) joint practice with the Panthers. .

“It’s a big blow being that he just came off of injury less than nine months ago,” Aikens said. “It hurt us, but we’re praying for him and we’re going to move forward from this.”

He continued: “I’m just out here doing what the coaches ask me to do. They need somebody to step up. I’m here getting better every day, trying to do whatever I can to help the team.”

Aikens is in line for a huge promotion. He logged just 64 defensive snaps in 2014, third-fewest of any Dolphins player.

But after a strong offseason, Aikens has leap-frogged Michael Thomas on the depth chart and is expected to start Saturday in his native Charlotte, North Carolina.

“I think the big thing is going to be when we get out here Saturday night and all of the coaches are on the sidelines, some are up in the press box and things are happening fast and nobody is kind of reassuring them of what the right motion adjustment check is or empty check and those types of things,” coach Joe Philbin said.

“Can they get a guy down in space? Can they tackle a guy when it’s third-and-8 and the guy catches a 5-yard pass? Those type of things. We need to see them compete and make plays.”

Aiken acknowledged that the speed of the NFL game was a bit overwhelming last year. But he has a better feel in Year 2.

Confidence is key, he added. And he’s confident that the secondary will be better than some might think.

“Not worried about it. We’re just gonna ball,” Aikens said. “I’ve been with these guys for two years. I’ve got all the confidence in the world in these guys and they’ve got all the confidence in me. We’re just going to play football. It’s not that hard of a game.”

When asked if people shouldn’t be sleeping on the Dolphins’ defensive backfield, Aikens responded:

“Not at all. You can try it if you want to.”

Perhaps not. But they certainly need work together. The first-string defensive backfield was ragged at times Thursday, allowing two quick touchdown passes during full-team red-zone drills. Aikens was picked on for one; Brent Grimes was beat for the other.

If Aikens doesn’t pan out (and the Dolphins don’t bring in a starter from the outside), Thomas or even Cedric Thompson could get a look. Thomas re-signed after a solid 2014 season; Thompson had an interception late Thursday, a highlight of an otherwise quiet rookie camp.

“That’s the beauty of the NFL,” said Reshad Jones, who picked off Cam Newton on Thursday. “It’s next man up, next man in line. Our coaches do a great job of preparing each and every individual for those game situations, so I  think Walt Aikens or Michael Thomas will be ready.”

McKinnon’s report may contradict the wells report conclusion that physical laws cannot explain the loss of PSIs in the football
but that is all it does

it has nothing to do with tire pressure or Mike’s answer

it has nothing to do with all the other facts the wells report looked at
or the refusal to turn over evidence by brady

McKinnon wasn’t hired to investigate what occurred with the balls
just to report on whether physical laws can explain the loss of PSI’s in the ball
and of course he was paid for that report

So the guy concludes that weather can explain loss of air pressure in footballs
And some one else will explain why Tom Brady destroyed his phone
and some one else why the phone should not have been requested
and some one else why there was an increase in texts with the trainors before the game
and some one else why the trainors took the ball to the bathroom
and some one else why “deflator” as a nickname had nothing to do with PSIs

the fact that some one has to explain that all these things might have other explanations besides Brady’s involvement should raise an eyebrow to any reasonable person to begin with

Like I said from the get go
    this isn’t a criminal trial
Some one can insert doubt into all these things if they want to
when you look at them as a whole, I think most people without biases will conclude that Tom Brady probably knew and even directed the balls to be deflated

If you want to go down a rabbit hole on every fact reported, go for it, some one can probably produce contradicting opinions on every aspect of the wells report

but as a whole, there is just no way to believe that all these other things have reasonable explanations

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Also
Its worth mentioning that the conclusion about physical laws affecting balls is not wells, an attorney, conclusion, it physicist David Marlowe’s opinion, former chair of the Princeton University Physics Department.

      Doctor Marlowe said
“This absence of an explanation based on natural factors tends to support a finding that human intervention may have been a factor.”

So one scientists says human intervention may be factor
the other one says that weather may be the only factor

they are just guessing what happened based on the facts they know
more damning that either report is the entire set of facts as a whole

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

and some one else why the trainors took the ball to the bathroom
      ——————————————————————–
The guy had to go to the bathroom.Video cameras show he was inside the bathroom a total of 1 minute and 40 seconds. Can he deflate 12 balls in that time mind you he had to unzip bag, separate the balls from bag, deflate each ball individually, put deflated ball in bag to separate inflated vs deflated, and after doing this 12 times zip bag up and return out of bathroom. Or is more likely he actually had to go to bathroom and this bathroom was the last bathroom before hitting field. Mind you he would have to wait almost 3.5 hours before returning at halftime to a bathroom. I know I can’t hold it that long

why are u being confrontational. I am just pointing out facts from the case and I’m not looking for attention as u think. You have already convicted a person based on what? You have nothing because you know nothing about the case. You probably didn’t read a single article but you are all for convicting a person as long as it helps the dolphins. I ‘d rather beat the pats when they have their best players on the field. You really sound insecure and arrogant when you confront people with nothing to back up your facts of a 15 second sound bite.

Who’s going to remove Goodell? the owners? laugh. They love him, well, say everyone but Kraft. Jerry Jones and Stephen Ross have both made very favorable comments in support of Goodell in recent weeks which suggests the owners as a collective group, approve of Roger’s work. The owners are the only ones who have a say in Goodell’s matters. Players and fans bitch about Goodell’s behavior but they won’t stop watching the games over what he does. Even if they do, the casual fan doesn’t care and thus the complaining fans will be no big loss to the NFL revenue push.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Yeah, the fans calling for Goodell’s head are wasting their breath- he goes when revenues are negatively affected it he retires, and not a second before.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

it took 5 separate votes by the owners to get him approved. International league failed, PED reversals, Ray rice episode of missing tape and only 2 game suspension before reversal, ap.What is said in public can be different behind closed doors. Weak argument.
Voting for someone new is different than voting for someone out the door. One thing has nothing to do with the other. He lacked a majority support because he was an unknown commodity then. He is now a known commodity. He has presided over record league revenues and other issues that owners have liked. He has way more owner support now than he did going in and that’s the bottom line.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I am not arguing just offering a opinion.record league revenues could have been achieved without him because he alone didn’t obtain directtv contract along with cbs and nbc contracts.Rozelle and tagliblu didn’t have this many issues combined.

Fede needs a lot more snaps in Reg Season. This does two things…

    1) Let’s us see what he can do with fresh legs, gains experience, feel confident about him being a starter if need be.

    2) Keeps Wake & Vernon fresher….limits Vernon’s production maybe enough to keep his resigning/FA contract somewhat reasonable. 😀
    ——————————————
Not so much makes him easier to re-sign, but it does keep us from having to overpay. I helps us set the price lower, he still has to accept it. He may test the waters and i think some team will pay him a decent amount. He’s a good DE.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Limiting snaps doesn’t really limit free agency value. Agents are still going to extrapolate data into a $ price… e.g. performance per snap and make a total dollar assessment based on performance per snap * league average snap total for the position.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh i was meaning the more Fede is viable, the more the need to resign Vernon decreases. Yeah, limiting snaps doesnt really do much for shifting his value, because he will still grade out relational to how well he played when he was on the field.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Also, if you look at Wake’s current contract, if he maintains similar production this season as last two years, it’s pretty good value as a % of NFL cap and for production at the position.

      • D's avatar D says:

If he has a beastly year, i think he becomes hard to negotiate with, though i will say i think he is asked to take a restructure to get his cap hit down as next year is going to have the brunt of Suh’s contract in it. Restructure doesnt mean he will be paid less, it just shifts the money around.

  61. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Just to chime in a bit. Really can’t compare the issues that Goodell had with Rozelle and Tagliabue, because in that era, this information such as Ray Rice in AC and basically AP and almost everything else would not have been public knowledge. The way information is distributed is lightyears different than when Rozelle and Tagliabue were Commissioner.

    • D's avatar D says:

There isnt much about one era of football you can compare to another era. Plsyers, what makes a successful offense, how player suspensions were handled, none of that is really applicable one era to another. Goddell is not well liked among fans, but he seems to be very well supported by most the owners, Kraft included until very recently. I dont think Goddell can be vilified because of a lot of these isues that have surfaced recently as a reflection on how well he runs things. Profits have never been higher, audiences have never been larger, swept under the rug issues are actually being handled. I dont think he is great, and i have issues with some of the pussified rule changes they have made to some aspects of the game, but all in all he really isnt that bad.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Cable and DirecTV, twitter, streaming, and fantasy football have really launched the NFL into a new stratosphere, but some of the advances in social media have hampered it’s image, because now every time an NFL player steps outside the lines (Not like Ted Ginn Jr. used to), the public hears about it, and the NFL gets painted in a bad light like a bunch of thugs play in it, when in reality, there are no more criminals in the NFL than any other business.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think society in general have more entitled, thugish, shit heads. Its not a reflection of the NFL its a reflection of the times we live in lol.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

true but the role of commissioner is the same as it ever was. Rozelle had to deal with gambling with colts marty something qb. Goodell has had many issues to deal with.

      • D's avatar D says:

I think though man, its because he is dealing with them. Like they said, most the time previously the information never became public so the previous commish’s werent having to deal with them, they swept it under the rug, or possibly never even heard about it themselves. =There also is this fucking etitlement everyone gets a trophy generation of players who believe they can do and say whatever the fuck they want to and there shoud be no consequences. They dont show self restraint and then the commish HAS to step i and do something.

  62. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Jetssuck,
Rozelle and tagliblu presided in different eras before the prevalence of social media, more aggressive legal environment. MLB & NBA have had similar issues as those faced by the NFL. Also to say a different president would have done the same thing is sheer here say and is non factual. It’s like saying any CEO can do the same job because economic environment are the only determinants that drive business revenue.

  63. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Description of what Chris Borland (who retired after one season) said was the advice from one of the vets on the Niners.
    ————————–

“Get yourself a fall guy,” the former player, whom Borland declined to name, told the rookies that if they ran into legal trouble, their designated
fall guy would be there to take the blame and, if necessary, go to jail. “‘We’ll bail him out,'” Borland says the former player assured them.

Borland was appalled. “I was just sitting there thinking, ‘Should I walk out? What am I supposed to do?’ ” he recalls. He says he didn’t leave the room because he didn’t want to cause a scene, but the incident stayed with him.
