Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Dolphins @ Redskins

A20337 Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus jumping

Okay, I can’t hear what the Little Prawn is saying, but he does recognize that you might not be leaping out of the sea after the Dolphins win in week 1.  The feeling after the 17-10 win on Sunday is – the Miami Dolphins have a lot to work on.

MorrisCarry

(The Little Prawn makes a Squeaking Sound that is barely audible)

I don’t know what the Little Prawn is saying.  But he sounds angry.  The Dolphins gave up 121 yards to Alfred Morris in the game.   They gave up 161 total rushing yards in the game.  Ouch.  Not what most Dolfans expected.

It affected the entire game.  Before you knew it the first half was over and the time of possession was heavily in the Redskins favor.  Speaking of Time of Possession, the Redskins held the ball 37:54 to the Dolphins 22:06.

Phillips Sack

1 sack for the Dolphins!  Just 1 sack.  Jordan Phillips played early and subbing for Suh made an instant impact.  In this photo Prawn points out that Cousins didn’t just slip on a banana peel.

WakeCelebvRedskins

It’s not that the pass rush was completely ineffective.  There was some pressure on Cousins.  In this photo Wake celebrates a sack…which did not count.  Jamar Taylor was called for holding on the same play.

(The Little Prawn throws down his stick in anger)

RishardTD copy

Cheer up Prawny,  Rishard Matthews and Tanny would not let the Dolphins go into halftime scoreless.

These two continue to take advantage of coming in to the league together.  Matthews caught 4 passes for 34 yards and this TD.

Tannehill’s numbers weren’t bad.  He was 22 of 24 for 226 yards and 1 TD.  But some shellfish think he held the ball a little too long in some situations.  The Redskins caused a near comical sack fumble in the 3rd quarter.  I will spare you the photo.

Miami Dolphins tight end Jordan Cameron (84) catches a pass for a first down in front of Washington Redskins free safety Trenton Robinson (34) during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, in Landover, Md. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(The Little Prawn makes a squeaking sound that is barely audible)

Okay Okay Prawny.  It wasn’t just old chemistry.  There was new chemistry too.  Like Cameron and Tanny.  Cameron was a big part of the offense.  He led the Dolphins in receiving yards with 73 receiving yards.

Cameron made tough catches look easy.  The guy is a natural pass catcher.  And he better be.  The Dolphins other tight end, Dion Sims, suffered a nasty concussion in the first half. It looked worse than it was.  Lets hope Sims is ready to go again soon.

LandryTD2

So the defense was off.  The offense was off.  How are we going to win?

Oh yeah, just get the ball to Landry somehow.  The irony is most of us thought the special teams was the weakness of the team going into the game.

Andrew Franks made his only field goal of the game.  Matt Darr averaged over 43 yards per punt and the Dolphins would take the lead in the game on  Jarvis Landry punt return.

Yeah, you are not going to catch Juice…

McCainInt

Actually Prawny reminds us to give some credit to the 2nd half defense.  The Redskins didn’t score in the 2nd half.  Not even a field goal.

Brice McCain made the interception of the century on the sideline after the Dolphins took the lead.  That interception preserved the win.  Good job Brice!  The Dolphins defense looked much better in the 2nd half.

At the end of the day even though Kirk Cousins had the help of an effective running game from the first snap of the game, he passed for less than 200 yards and threw 2 interceptions.  So don’t be so hard on the defense this week.

Special mention to JS. Thanks for kinda preparing me for the op. All I have to say is that you are far braver than me to endure what you did. Mine was a toddle in the park compared to yours and it still hurt a lot.

Glad to hear you operation was successful Lee! We were concerned about you. Happy that everything worked out.

  4. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It was very disappointing to see us get off to such a slow start In the first half. The defense looked horrible and the offense couldn’t get out of its own way. I’m glad we were able to make some halftime adjustments and come out in the second half and win. There are no gimmies in the NFL.

The Miami dolphins are undefeated. (Unfortunately so is the rest of the AFC East)

  5. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

I haven’t watched the game yet but the fact we won fills me with joy. Normally we lose the opener.

  6. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Rock, some teams just start slowly and build it up over the course of the game. Maybe our Phins are one of those teams. Speaking of a great weekend, firstl of all I cam home from Hosital, secondly my Adelaide Crows won a final(playoff) gamein Melbourne. First one since 2002. Consdering out head Coach was mudered half way through the season what a fantastic result. And now thge Phins get away to a winning start. I’m ver happy right now.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Glad to see you. Hope things continue in a positive direction for you. Also glad the Dolphins were able to give you something else to be happy about!

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I did not see the play yesterday but I see that it is being reported that Suh May be suspended or fined for kicking Morris in the head after a tackle yesterday. We really don’t need that kind of shit !!

  8. TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

It’s currently 54° on the way to a perfect 78 for a high. Football is in the air, Fall is just around the corner.. This is my favorite time of the year, leading up to Thanksgiving. I am hopeful yesterday’s display was just the jitters of a young team coming together, and that we’re playing meaningful ball in December.

  9. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Well, after the rest of the games’ stats were recorded Ryan T would up being 14th in all major stats other than pass yards per play where he was 18th. MEDIOCRE play. We expect and must see better from him and the rest of the team!

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

That’s pretty much who he is. I don’t expect anything other than right around 15th in the league statistically for him.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

After all the hype coming out of training camp in preseason this year I was expecting a lot more

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I don’t know that it’s fair to Tanne to expect more. I suppose if we ever get solid o line play, he may get a few ticks better, but I don’t think it’s realistic to expect him to be the reason we win a game (with any consistency; he may occasionally provide the play(s) that give us a win, but he won’t be consistent like Rogers, Brees, Manning.. Maybe a Flacco or even a Rivers eventually). I am not talking down about him- I just think some are talking him up to more than he is.

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I know it was only the first week of the season, but I am now really concerned. We played like shit against a shitty team. Buffalo looked like the real deal dominating the Colts, holding Luck to a 63.6 rating. Tyrod Talor looked like a franchise QB with a 123.8 rating. I think we have a tough row to hoe in the division this year. I am questioning my 6-0 prediction now. We may be lucky to enter our by at 500

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Things to keep in mind: Buffalo was@ home, buffalo has a very good defense, Colts have mediocre defense, Ryan gets his team’s to play well when his rah rah shit is fresh (eventually, like the jets, the bills will realize there is not a lot of substance there and will tune him out).

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It is certainly better this morning discussing our shitty play after a win instead of a loss. Teams that we fielded in the past would have lost this game. If it wasn’t for players like Jarvis & Jones tuning it up we would have lost this game. Jarvis was PUMPED. He showed his will to win when he fought and carried those three DBs for three yards to get the first down. He WOULD NOT CONCEED. Then he won the game with the big punt return

  15. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THE CONTRAST between Todd Bowls’ Jets and Philbin’s Dolphins was tremendous. Bowles, the man Ross SHOULD HAVE SELECTED AS MIAMI’S HEAD COACH over Philbin, had his team ready to play!! –REX RYAN also had his Bills fully prepared to TAKE APART Andrew Luck and the Indy Colts. I know it’s ONLY ONE WEEK! — I KNOW there are 15 games left. –But why do some of us already have that “Here we go again” feeling which says “NO PLAYOFF WINS THIS YEAR, EITHER?”
    —————
I’ve got many ideas about what can be done to improve the Dolphins. Here’s just ONE. –ACTIVATE Jonas Grey and USE HIM on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1!!!

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hey Lee! Glad to hear all went well.

  17. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I saw the suh tackle and what happened after. Any other player we wouldn’t even be talking about it. He was walking and he hit the helmet. I thought it was accidental. PFT has to make an issue about it to get clicks.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I saw it on NFL Network and they played the PacMan Jones illegal play afterwards as if it was even in the same realm

Much ado about nothing with Suh
I didn’t notice it while watching the game until the media played it afterwards
You can’t kick a helmet off by walking by
At worst he kicked the player while he was down intentionally, and I don’t even know you can say that
I’;m not sure the NFL will be touching this one

I don’t think Suh cares who thinks he is dirty and I think the perception that he is – is part of his game

  18. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Well after this game I’m more concerned. I didn’t see anything from tanny or defense that says this team is any different than the last year team. We were starting slow last year on offense and couldn’t stop the run on defense. I take the win but I don’t see a playoff team here right now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      We didn’t look good

I think stopping the run is the key
Once you let teams run on you on first down it changes the dynamic of the game

If they correct that problem, its a different game

IMO the LBs just weren’t very aggressive in the first half

  19. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Mathews drop inside the 10 yard line changed the game. Instead of a 1st and 10 from their 6 he dropped the pass then the next play tanny fumbles and they get the ball on our 40.
Mathews needs to get his head out of his ass and make that catch.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The LB’s were blown out of plays so often, it was crazy to watch. That’s how it looked to me. In the first half, it seemed like every tackle was 5-10 yards downfield, and not by a LB.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

misi isn’t playing very well but all of LBs are having issues. It wasn’t pretty.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Sheppard had 3 solo tackles, and 2 assists. He’s got to be better than that. I guess part of the problem is, when you have 2 DT’s that are almost always penetrating, that leaves the C and a G to demolish the LB’s.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I think MOST on this board (with perhaps one exception) feel the linebackers and Misi in particular just aren’t/weren’t that good.

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

uwantwat — glad you made it through that real pain in the arse and are back to thinking about Phins wins as the rest of us sleep. 🙂

  22. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pig — completely with Little Prawn’s excellent take on the game. If anything I was glad we all realized we shouldn’t be thinking about who we face in the playoffs quite yet……still have to win them on the field.

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Try

Not sure if you read that or heard when Tim Bowens was comparing their excellent D-line of Bowens, Gardener, Armstrong and Taylor to the new one of Suh, Mitchell, Wake and Vernon. He basically said he and Gardener’s job was to hold or contain the interior line to let the LB’s make the plays, where Suh and Mitchell are usually rushing upfield, which means if they don’t make the play, there’s usually at a minimum 1 or 2 free interior O-linemen to seek out potential tacklers.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I did read his comments. I think that is an accurate assessment of how the interior of our line operates currently. If they are going to play that way, they’re going to need to get better pursuit lb’s, it seems to me. Perhaps pursuit it’s not the right word- how about better anticipating lb’s?

well in all fairness with me, nothing will change until it does. i know some want to call that negative, but i wont be thinking playoffs or anything else until it actually happens. i had my fill of buying into the hype for years with marino and then johnson and what not. i will just now wait and see and make my judgements by what actually happens not what i wish would happen

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think it was more the Redskins outplayed the Dolphins than they got out coached.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Bingo, I saw more energy from the Skins. It seemed our team was busy reading about how good they are. In the end our better talent won out and we’re 1-0.

Is there any word on Sims, OV or R. Jones yet?

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

That may be right Mike- but can some of that be put on the coaches (not getting a proper gauge on the team)?

  29. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Man the negativity in here is oppressive!

Did you really think Albert would look Pro bowl ready?
Did you really think our LB’s morphed into the Saints 80’s LB’s
As good as Tanny’s progress has bee did you think he wasn’t going to miss a pass?
Did you think that after getting ZB scheme OT and RB’s that we would instantly morph into a power running team for one play?

If it’s play-offs or bust! why are you even watching the regular season?

    OK Rant over!

  30. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Maybe we didn’t get the forecasted SuhNami, but the D still only gave up ten points, including a bagle in the 2nd half despite being on the field so much.

Only thing surprising was that it was the DBs who went into phone booths and came out wearing capes.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

      Nice! Fair point.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was looking at the D only allowing 10 as well although the Skins really shot themselves in the foot on a number of drives in the second half with bad penalties. What it comes down to is we played pretty poorly but still got the win. Good teams can get wins even when not on their A game. Hopefully we see this team step it up a notch and take it to JAX next week.

The play Herd termed the “3 Stooges Drill” was the most disheartening thing to me. I was seriously afraid we were going to lose our composure after that display.

  33. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

According to PFF, Miami’s safeties allowed only six yards of completions against them. Outstanding.

    ### NBC made a big deal of Ndamukong Suh grazing the head of Alfred Morris when Suh got up off the ground after tackling Morris, suggesting that Suh could be suspended.

But the NFL said Monday that Suh did nothing wrong and won’t face any disciplinary action. Michael Signora told our Adam Beasley that the play was reviewed by the league’s senior football operations staff and “while there was contact between the players, Suh’s action was not deemed a kick.”

You know what we did yesterday that we couldn’t do last year?

We made a critical 1st down to run the clock out!

I haven’t heard anybody talk about that?
Just bitching about even with Suh we still can’t stop the run!

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

We definately played a better 2nd half

I thought we had moments like that last year too

      It really doesn’t matter though

Teams become who they are in the regular season
      It’s 1 week at a time
The Importance of the offseason is to make the moves so you can be a contender

I think we did that in the offseason
But that is just on paper

During the course if the season we need to become that contender

I don’t think how you start the season really matters so much

But a blowout would have been a lot more fun to wTch… Lol

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Skins ran a running play a bunch of times that I’m not used to seeing. They’d run left at the G and then Albert would slant into the middle. Pretty clear it was by design and it gained some consistent yards.

Guessing that was a game planned to both not contest Suh at point of contact and take advantage of the space he leaves as he drives up field.

  37. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The offense starting slow seems to be the main issue. I hope they start faster next week. I feel like we said the same thing last year about the offense in September. “We need to start faster”

The Jets played the Browns with Johnny Manziel @ home, and Buffalo played the Colts @ home with a top 3 defense against a bottom 3rd defense. We deserve some consideration for that. On the other hand, many felt at the beginning of the season that Washington might be the worst team going in.

a positive would be we made halftime adjustments that were good. The stacking of LB’s was a great move along with whatever they did with wideouts.

  61. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Complaints about yesterday’s play are more about a pattern of behavior and not just that game alone. Too many times we come out flat against lesser teams and either manage to squeak out a win or lose outright. Yesterday it was mostly on the players, especially Tannehill. Until we can handily beat the lesser teams consistently, I’ll have a hard time believing we’re in the hunt for the playoffs.

Good morning. The game was certainly frustrating but shows how in the NFL, anyone can show up on any given Sunday. The Skins had a good game plan on offense with their trap and counter runs and big backs. Cousins skills were utilized within a tight range and he wasn’t asked to throw many up and outs (hardest throw to make in the NFL). The Fins certainly faced adversity early on with poor tackling that allowed the Skins to extend drives that should have ended a yard short of the markers. This is what Tim and I discussed briefly last week leading up to the game; that we aren’t going to hype ourselves too much because we know that sometimes crap happens in games and things go bad in a hurry. To the Fins credit they managed to tighten up later in the game and make the bigger plays. Still, the win is nice and it’s way too early to freak out about ‘problems’. Tackling was the big issue defensively in the game and on offense the play calling but this was attributed I guess to the lack of time of possession.

  64. drg's avatar drg says:

A win is a win, right? Felt like our DL got sealed far too easily yesterday and the LBs weren’t instinctual enough to attack the gaps. I saw a few guys critical of Misi, but I felt like he was the only LB that actually made a few plays at or behind the LOS. Thought he played okay. Both Vigil and Sheppard weren’t good at all yesterday. That’s a big hole that won’t get filled this season. Maybe Vigil improves with each game, but he has to get stronger. Maybe we move Misi back to that spot and give McCain some minutes. If the DL steps up and plays better that will take much of the pressure off.

Hard to be too critical of the offense since they had the ball for such a small % of the game. Power run game on short yardage situations still a major issue. Couple of sacks could have been avoided with better pocket presence. Overall I thought Tannehill was solid. Missed a few throws and was fortunate not to be picked off. Offense was undone by some sloppy play and hopefully just rust.

Getting Parker back will be a nice boost and with Cameron showing out like he did our receiving corps is really dangerous. Other than RZ issues and short yardage runs, I feel like the offense is going to only get better and will be top 10 level for the season. Defense is going to have to pick it up for sure. Taylor wasn’t very good. Brice was okay, although that pick was awesome. Both Jones and Grimes played like pro bowlers. Didn’t notice Aikens much which is a good thing. Phillips and Fede both flashed.

If we see some major improvements in the run D over the next few weeks I’ll breathe easier. I’ve always been a fan of the way Coyle mixes up his defensive looks, but it is on him to get this defense prepared and called correctly or it’s going to be another .500 type season.

SB7, well we blew out some bad teams last year so to me this was just opening day and one game. We’ll need to see a bigger body of work to see where this team really is.

Well this team isn’t the same team so we’ll see if we’re paper tigers or we’ll get better. When on the road against a bad team or a perceived bad team just win the game and we did. As up and down as the defense was they still only allowed 10 points. The offense had a sub par game and the STs were really good.

I noticed a lot of our backups and reserve guys rotating in yesterday on D. I was surprised by how many times I saw a backup in our base defense yesterday. That is precisely why depth is so important. These guys play, not just when there are injuries.

  91. drg's avatar drg says:

    Al,

Then we are going to have to change the offense or the personnel. We don’t seem to have a strong pairing on the OL that is reliable to run behind right now. We don’t carry a fullback. Don’t want to be running Tannehill into the line consistently. Miller or Williams aren’t power backs. The scheme we run calls for the majority of the plays to be run out of shotgun and it appears that Tannehill is most comfortable with that style. Maybe Jonas Gray helps? Maybe we try some gimmick formations or direct snaps? I don’t have any easy answers and don’t think the coaches do either. Sure, we can run the ball more, but the strength of this offense is based upon spreading the field, creating mismatches, and getting the ball to playmakers quickly. We have a great rpc average because teams don’t know when to expect it. A power run game has never been a part of this offense since Philbin took over.
