Game 6  (Got to get better)

It feels like the 70’s when the teams would play 6 pre-season games. So far there have been 5 totally vanilla games and the Dolphins have won the two that mattered the most. The “third” pre-season game the one where we hold out the most hope since the previous season that we see a glimmer of what is to be was a win over a Falcon team that showed pretty well in their season opener on Monday Night. The next important win was obviously the season opener. A win that left everyone a tad deflated. The feeling we had was strong in anticipation of the season there is no reason to lose the feeling after only one game against a weak opponent while playing as vanilla as can be allowing the team to sort of ease into the season, maybe we go into December a more well rounded team. A team that is truly ready to contend for playoff positioning.

I remember when I took notice of our friend and fellow blogger Rhino on the boards. He had a different screen name at the time, as I recall, and he came on saying – “Home field advantage is our responsibility”, prior to the start of the 2012 season.  He was telling us as fans that we needed to be there to support the team, that we needed to fill the stadium so our team could feel the support essentially. That stuck with me, I found it clever and fun. As a fan as always I was ready to do my part. The problem was deep down we all knew that all we had was one thing – no chance. We had hope and we had spirit and we even had some decent players but despite all of our wishes we were a long shot at best.  The hype wasn’t there, the prognosticators wrote us off, there was a rookie coach and quarterback and Jeff Ireland.

Here we are three off seasons later, Jeff Ireland is gone, our quarterback has grown into the position and the team has thrown its confidence behind the fourth year head coach.

And we Signed Ndomukong Suh – Ndomukong Freakin’ Suh – Is a Dolphin now.

The stadium has been nicely updated, season tickets are flying out of the box office, there is a buzz from the media, and there is honest hope in fans hearts. You can’t tell me that this year doesn’t have a much different feel as compared to the last (fill in the blank) seasons prior. There is something almost tangible this time, when you defend your team to your friends and fans of other teams you actually have coviction in your rebuttals and had confidence for the first time in a long time when you said, “we’re gonna kick your ass”, you know you did. No more dreaded thoughts of Jeff Ireland confusing your judgement, there is clarity. There is a much different vibe this year and we have started right on script – one game one win.

Game 1 of the regular season and you have to go and play at the circus called the Washington Redskins, followed by  (can you say Dolphins of the 2000’s) Jacksonville Jaguars. The travel is minimal so far the team is relatively healthy, according to Tim Knight we have 20 new players on the team so it just has to gel. I believe the coaches are taking a slow and steady approach so maybe we set our expectations a little high based on the feeling (we finally have) and lost site that this team needs to tighten up. Most of the receivers are new, Jamil Douglas is a rookie starter, Jordan Cameron is new so the offense has a little uniting to do. Suh is new on Defense and the linebacker core has been overturned and we have 2 new starters in the secondary. There wasn’t tremendous scheming, that I saw last week, I thought we looked like we played pretty straight up. We took their punches, stood our ground and punched them right back when we needed to. Remember it was a second half shutout. Plus we did one thing that was on everyone’s list for needs improvement for next season list and that was kill the clock at the end of the game to preserve a win. We did it. Incidentally Ryan Tannehill enjoyed his best opening day QB rating of his career.

Style points, or lack thereof, aside the Dolphins have done everything we asked for leading into the season. Now we have one more pre-season game – Game 6 – to go before the shit gets real. Jacksonville is another home game for the Dolphins, it makes up for the one in London, and there is still no reason to put the pedal to the metal. We sit back holding our cards, watching our division rivals, getting guys a lot of snaps, getting guys healthy and becoming cohesive. While not overlooking Jacksonville you just won’t show some stuff yet and continue with a larger rotation than perhaps we’ll see going forward.

It’s way too early to panic and its way way to early for despair. The team has done what we wanted so far so let’s do what they want from us. Let’s let them know we are behind them, we know last year was last year and that this is a different team. Until there is something to worry or gripe about – we won’t. But don’t get me wrong I am not telling anyone how to be a fan, I’m just saying you should trust that feeling that you know you finally felt for the first time in a long time. Afterall, “home field advantage is OUR responsibility”! Hopefully we see an expanded role for Devante Parker this week as we prepare for the season opener excuse me I mean Home Opener next week.

Got to get better in a little while…

Just like he did in his very first game with the Dolphins, safety Michael Thomas found himself thrown into the action on defense late in the game Sunday with Miami trying to protect a lead.

Now, Thomas is looking at the possibility of making his third career start with the Dolphins in light of the hamstring injury to Reshad Jones.

Jones missed the end of the 17-10 victory at Washington on Sunday and didn’t practice Wednesday before being a limited participant the next day.

“I prepare every time like it’s going to be my one shot,” Thomas said. “It started with my first game here. Anytime the coaches give me a chance to go out there on the field, I’m going to go out there and make plays for my teammates.”

Philbin said he was confident Thomas would get the job done if Jones isn’t able to play at Jacksonville

“He’s a really hard worker, number one,” Philbin said of Thomas. “He loves football. He comes into the building every day with the same attitude. He’s very positive and he’s a good, solid football player. He has good instincts out there, he’s a good tackler, his play speed is good. Yeah, he’s been a good contributor since the day we got him.”

Thomas, whose first appearance in a Dolphins uniform ended with his game-clinching end zone interception of Tom Brady in December 2013, started two games last season.

If does he end up starting Sunday alongside second-year player Walt Aikens, the Dolphins would have a starting tandem with a combined three career starts. But Thomas isn’t worried about that lack of starting experience.

“I’ve got confidence in Walt,” Thomas said. “He plays off me, I play off him. Our teammates and our team trust us. We’re going to go out there and compete if that’s the case.”

    GRIMES GETS DIRTY

With three Pro Bowls on his resume, including each of his two seasons with the Dolphins, Brent Grimes has earned a reputation as one of the best cover cornerbacks in the league.

But he earned kudos from defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle after the Washington game for his work in run support, something you don’t necessarily expect from a 5-foot-10, 185-pound defender.

“It was a physical game,” Grimes said. “There was a lot of taking on of blocks and things like that, but it’s football. Things like that happen from time to time.

“It’s part of the game. Sometimes you have to tackle running backs and take on guards and tight ends and things like that, but it’s part of the job. It’s cool that people notice, but I’m just doing my job.”

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Does it really matter? That’s good by any standards. The problem is our offense only did that too. The defense is not the issue right now, it’s the offense better get better. Like Lisa Ann better. LOL

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It was both, take it to the extreme and it will reveal all. D gives up a long drive that eats up the entire first qtr, but the FG try is wide right, the O gets the ball and drives to the opponents 35, but has to punt, D gives up another long drive resulting in a TD on the last play of the half. Second half O drives down and gets a TD, D gives up another long drive, but recovers a fumble in the endzone, O has a long drive the results in a FG on the last play of the game. The O has 3 drives in the game, moves the ball on all 3, but only scores 10 pts, who’s to blame for the O only scoring 10 pts?

  42. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim

ever one of us wants a lisa ann better, but the first game the d gave up long time consuming drives. we all want lisa ann for long consuming things but not want the defense to do that

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes and the offense didn’t answer enough. Complimentary football. But they pulled it off in all 3 phases for the win. 🙂

  43. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim
and you are right also. the offense did nothing great in the game. i agree to that. it takes a team to dominate. hope sunday is different

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Special teams won the game, the D didn’t give up may pts, but allowed 38 minutes of TOP, so it didn’t do the O any favors there, the O left lots of plays on the field, but did have a couple of nice drives.

STs were very good, no missed kicks, great punting, punt return TD, you can’t ask for any more from them.

The O and the D need to be better, one didn’t outperform the other.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, the offense did not play that well regardless of TOP. 3 sacks for 44 yards in loss, what happened there?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Pinball, that one sack fumble resulted in most of the 44 yrd loss.

No one is debating the O didn’t play well, but you can’t say the D played well, sure they also did some nice things, but overall they were both bad.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Dude, I said the entire team needs to clean it up many times, but let’s not go into panic mode at 1-0 off a road win. LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That may be true Tim, but I’m just commenting what you said recently.

You said, the defense is not the issue right now, it’s the offense better get better. Didn’t you just write that or is Home trolling you 😉

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When a defense allows just 10 points it’s very good. When an offense only scores 10 points it’s very bad.

But I understand that the defense allowed the Skins too much TOP.

not yet.I’m gonna have to call them.Doesn’t make sense having spending hours finding the channels bookmarked and thunderstorm knocks out all your work. Maybe I’ll ask the 15 yr old that babysits for us.

Not sure what to make of your post, other than our team has sucked for about a decade. Should we be OK with 7-9,8-8,7-9 Philbin because we sucked before he got here?

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just showing what we’ve been since the start of the downfall of this team starting with Wannstedt’s last year.

i think what tim means is the offense sucked for the decade therefor you cant blame it on the defense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No showing the team the last 11 years responding to Ken’s post that we’ve been horribly inconsistent under Philbin when we’ve been horribly inconsistent much longer than that. It’s not as if Philbin came in and ruined a good thing.

We all know where he stands. We’re all fans and we’ve all gone through it. I’m not defending him but I’m also not engaging in a Philbin bashing session as if we lost last week. We’re 1-0, try to enjoy it.

      Go Phins!!!!

  81. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Tim:

You think we have been a consistent during the Philbin years? We have been the model of consistency. Hence why we have been perpetually around .500 under Philbin

  82. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I think what Tim is saying is 8-8 may not be were you want to be!

    But it’s better that 1-15 or 6-10!!!!!!!!!

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Maybe so but that’s not what I was saying. I said the team has been horribly inconsistent under Philbin and it has. Over 3 years plus they are 1 game under 500. Their points scored to points allowed are almost dead even. 2 years in a row we manage to beat the Patriots but lose games we should have other wise won. We go on great winning streaks in November and then go on to horrible losing streaks in December

i was just fucking with ya. how you like to say the defense was bad cause the offense sucked. i think their record speaks for itself. i dont care what anyone calls it or when it started, the bottom line is they are not winning in the playoffs. i will let the rest of you fight over what to call it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When did I say that? The defense started off poorly and hurt the offense by killing TOP. Then they played better in the 2nd half (zero points allowed) and the offense did a little better but not by much. STs won the game.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not sure where some of you are coming from. It seems like you guys wants to start an argument. I’m simply pointing out where we’ve been for quite some time and hopefully it changes this year.

Mike E, pretty crazy exaggeration to what I said, Just pointing out that we were not 7-9 last year. If I listed 7-9, 8-8 and 9-7 would you let it stand? 😉

  85. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    But it’s better that 1-15 or 6-10!!!!!!!!!

no it isnt, at least at 1-15 you move up in the draft and you have the potential to draft better talent

Teams thAt hover around .500 are often the ones to breakthrough to be perennial contenders

It’s hard to go from winning 3 or 4 games to be a playoff team

The NFL is not the NBA
      Average is not Purgatory
It’s a step in th right direction
You just have to be able to take the next step
      And some teams never do

  86. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I read a article once that said gaining 2 wins from previous yr is very hard.I believe the % was around 25 %. Well we are about due according to probability statistics.

    Tim:
We have not been good for a while but that does not give Philbin a pass. This is his 4th season he has to turn this around and turn us into a consistent. It doesn’t matter what’s happened before Philbin. I was talking about Philbin

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t disagree, I was just pointing out it’s been going on much longer than that. To me that year we went 4-12 in Wannstedt’s last year was the downfall of this team to where we are today. We’re trying to change that and we’re 1-0 so why keep harping on the recent past when we all know this is Joe’s make or break season. It’s nothing new, we discussed this all offseason. This team has to start winning or we’re going to see a lot of changes once again.

That said, say we don’t get it done and Philbin is fired. Who do you have your eye on as a new HC?

  88. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

wow, calm down tim, it is just a blog. i dont get why you got to be so argumentative
