Game Day – Week 4 – Dolphins vs Jets

header(header from CBS Sports)

Perhaps another trip across the pond will help the Miami Dolphins prevent their season from potentially spiraling out of control.

They’ll try to avoid a third straight defeat Sunday in London against a New York Jets team that’s looking to bounce back from its first defeat.

Last season, Miami (1-2) was 1-2 and coming off two straight losses when it went to London and rolled to a 38-14 victory over Oakland. Though the Dolphins would go on to lose the game that followed, at least they are familiar with their current plight.

“We’ve been here before, so we know what we gotta do, and that’s just go back to work, find a way to get this W,” safety Michael Thomas’ told the team’s official website.

Saddled with high expectations after adding $114 million defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh and confident quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Lamar Miller would take their play to a higher level, the Dolphins have floundered out of the gate. They needed a fourth-quarter rally to win 17-10 at Washington in Week 1, never led during a three-point loss at Jacksonville and were blown out 41-14 by Buffalo at home last Sunday.

Fourth-year coach Joe Philbin appeared to be on thin ice heading into the season, and might fall through if things don’t improve. Publicly, Philbin hasn’t shown too much concern for these early struggles or his own job security but won’t sugarcoat the team’s current state.

”This is not a time to panic,” he said. ”We’re not getting 53 new players. We’re not getting 24 new coaches. We’re either going to find solutions to these problems or not, and we’re either going to stick together or not.”

Philbin said that lineup changes could happen this week, perhaps on defense.

The addition of Suh hasn’t kept the Dolphins from yielding 435 rushing yards – second-most in the league. They’ve recorded one sack and allowed a combined 101.8 passer rating to the trio of Kirk Cousins, Blake Bortles and Tyrod Taylor.

”I’m disappointed, but I’m mostly disappointed in myself,” embattled defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said. ”I’ve got to do a better job getting guys in the right spots.”

Offensively, Tannehill has completed 61.4 percent of his passes with five touchdowns but threw all three of his interceptions last week. He’s also been sacked seven times.

Miller set career highs with 1,099 rushing yards and eight TDs last season, but has gained 105 without a score on 30 attempts while dealing with an ankle issue.

”Guys are frustrated,” Tannehill said. ”We know we’re a better team than we’ve showed. There’s no panic, but definitely urgency to get this thing turned around.”

Tannehill’s completed only 57.6 percent of his passes and has four TDs and six INTs while splitting his six starts against New York (2-1). Miller ran for a career-high 178 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries during a 37-24 season-ending home loss to the Jets in 2014.

However, both could have a hard time getting untracked against a New York defense that allowed 17 points prior to last week’s 24-17 loss to Philadelphia. Despite the defeat, the Jets yielded 231 yards and rank fourth in the league giving up 298.3 per game.

With four turnovers and a number of missed tackles on Darren Sproles’ 89-yard punt return for a TD, the Jets feel they hurt themselves more than the Eagles did.

“We didn’t lose this game because we thought we were better than we are,” center Nick Mangold said. ”We lost because of execution.”

With Chris Ivory sidelined by a quad injury, New York managed 47 rushing yards and Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three interceptions after throwing two in the first two contests.

”It’s just as important not to overreact for a loss as it is to a win,” first-year coach Todd Bowles said. ”We didn’t overreact to the two wins, we’re not going to overreact to the one loss.”

Ivory, who leads the team with 148 rushing yards and has scored twice, should return for this contest after being a full participant in practice Thursday and Friday. He’s averaged 3.7 yards per carry while gaining 171 in four games against the Dolphins.

While Ivory and star cornerback Darrelle Revis (hamstring) are probable to play, Eric Decker (knee) is a game-time decision after sitting out last week’s game. Decker is listed as questionable after missing practice Wednesday and being limited on Thursday and Friday.

This will be the Jets’ first game in London.

”I think guys think it’s cool to go over there,” Fitzpatrick said. “It will be a unique experience for all of us and hopefully bring the team together even more.”

It’s time to kick some ass fellas!  GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Piggy, I meant Tanny launched it all day. But we do it our of desperation not as part of our plan.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s definately not the game plan

The game plan goes Outthe window every week bc we are behind so early
Mexico makes you question he gameplan I guess..lol

I think we are putting Tanny in bad spots to succeed
But he has to perform better

With the 5th pick in the 2016 draft… (unless we trade it for 12 6th round picks):

Yep, he’s one of my favorite possible picks for us right now. But Don’t rule out DL or a shut down CB. I would also like to move up with our 2nd pick and get another one of those 3 positions (OL, DL, or CB). Yes, it’s October but when you’re a Dolphins fan what else is there to talk about after 4 weeks into the season.

  9. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    rhino,

you are a breath of hope. naive but a breath of hope…..what in the world makes you think they can win enough games to slide down to the 5th pick.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

lol… I can handle losing a game IF the effort is worthy. This is what a team looks like when the ‘leaders’ play for money more than winning.

  10. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Ok, so they are going to shake it up…If that means firing Philbin, who will take over? I don’t want either of the coordinators to move up….so what does that leave us with? 😦

  11. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

this team looks as lost at cam cameron year, i dont see without major changes them winning another game.

  13. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

i dont really have a problem with either coordinator being made the HC. first no one knows if blowbin is holding them back. second, getting rid of blow is positive, it cant be worse how they are playing under him. finally, so what if they dont win a game, improves drafting position.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

As if I wasn’t angry enough to start, I have to see a headline stating “Joe Philbin not at all worried about his job security”.

  15. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Someone wrote a really good article about Philbin’s coaching staff. I think it was Mando but not seeing it at this moment. It talks about every coach on this team is pretty bad and compared this staff to Tony Sparano’s. Tony had a really solid list of coaches Most of the guys here wouldn’t get another NFL job right now. The most accomplished coach Philbin got? Sherman who coaches a 0-3 high school team today. It really is the coaching folks.

The Mets offense is doing their best Dolphins impression: 2 runs in the last four games, including being no hit) while giving away home field advantage is not making me feel confident going into the playoffs.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

At least the 2007 team was competitive- we lost 6 games that year by 3 points ot less. Ironically, I went to opening weekend @ Washington that season as well but the Dolphins lost 16-13 in OT.

Watched about 2 hours of baseball this afternoon. Miami’s Dee Gordon became the first national leaguer SINCE HONUS WAGNER (1908) to lead the league in hits, stolen bases and batting average!!! He’s also the first player since Jackie Robinson (1949) to lead the NL in batting average and steals. Also watched ICHIRO pitch the 9th inning for Miami, thus fulfilling a dream he’s had for many years to pitch in the majors. Interesting stuff.

ross is just waiting for them to board the plane then tell blowbin….’oh blow my boy, i forgot my car keys in the FBO lobby, why not go fetch them for me’ then have the plane take off without him.

of course blowbin is so dumb he will still show up to work monday

  29. Not going to do any good to replace Philbin with and interim like Rizzi unless Coyle is fired along with him. Coyle is a huge part of the problem. How could a guy still be “figuring things out” for over 3 years now? I wanted Coyle gone a long time ago. Kept saying he was the weak link. Well, we know now it was Kacy Rodgers who made Coyle even look like he had somewhat of a clue.
In addition, Lazor is a fuckwad as well. (3) second and longs and he runs the ball. 3 in a row. but, there was no way the Jets were expecting that right? Fucking idiot.

  33. I’m sorry, but the players on this team can’t even call themselves men when they just allow players on other teams to just TAKE their manhood week after week. Fucking sissies.

  34. Fans aren’t allowed to root against their team so their HC gets fired but it’s okay for the players on the team to play like shit for the same reason. There’s NO DOUBT this team has an issue with it’s coaching staff. NO DOUBT. How the fuck do you have this much talent on a football team and they don’t even show up? These fuckers don’t even want to be out there.

  35. It’s time for this team to EARN the respect of it’s fanbase. Fuck this loyalty bullshit!! Why the fuck am I supposed to be a loyal fan when these fucking douchebags won’t even give a fucking effort out there. They’ve stepped all over their coaching staff and aren’t doing their jobs. And, in doing so, they stepped all over their fanbase as well. Fuck these fucks. When they start earning my respect I’ll give them some.

  41. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    lou,

i hear ya. but lots of teams do that. fun on second and long after an incomplete pass. my bitch if more with first and goal they threw the ball like 8 our of 9 times and at least 4 of those were calling a pass play, the fade, which is a weakness of tanny. arent the coaches suppose to coach to their players strengths

  42. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

hmmm green bay has 6 sacks and sf only has 3 points. i thought tanny was the only qb that couldnt handle pressure

  43. I really don’t know what to think with this team. I don’t know if there’s anybody who could take over this team as it’s HC and bring in a staff and right this ship. Not when you have such a huge group of losers playing for it.

This team cannot figure out how to start a game as if it mattered to them. On Sunday, the Jets scored on their first drive — just like the Bills did two weeks ago, just how the Jaguars did three weeks ago, and just how the Redskins did four weeks ago.

This team cannot recognize that Jets cornerback Buster Skrine is blitzing on practically every pass play. I recognized it. Why didn’t they? And if they did recognize it, why didn’t they figure out how to block Skrine so the Jets would stop sending him after Ryan Tannehill time and again as if by replay?

This team cannot figure out its issues tackling cleanly.

This team cannot figure out how to move the chains consistently enough to boast a running game. The leading rusher Sunday, by the way, was Jarvis Landry with 29 yards.

    He’s a receiver.

This team cannot figure out how to score more than two touchdowns on offense. This team cannot figure out how to maximize players who have been stars in the past.

  74. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Although Coyle should have been fired at the end of last season and should be fired now, today, Philbin said he would continue as defensive coordinator.

Coyle has lost this defense. Some of his players do not respect him. Some don’t like him very much. None will say so publicly. But it is true.

That’s one reason Coyle had a closed-door meeting with players last Monday to air out grievances. At that meeting, players asked Coyle to change his defense, particularly up front.

Defensive linemen, who are playing a two-gap defense in Coyle’s system, hate it. The two-gap requires players to read two gaps and react rather than simply attack up field as in a one-gap scheme. Coyle listened to the complaints.

    But apparently not much changed.

And so when Ndamukong Suh, the team’s highest-paid player, wore sneakers to a full-padded practice during the week, other players noticed. They took it as a sign Suh was making a statement of dissatisfaction over the defensive coaching.

And why are players drawing that conclusion? Because a prominent handful of them are dissatisfied over the defensive coaching, too.

I asked Suh what gear he wore to practice Thursday.

    “Next question,” he answered.

I asked Suh if the Monday meeting resolved anything.

    “Next question,” he answered.

I asked Suh why the defense chronically starts slow.

    “Next question,” he answered.

And the non-answers were appropriate after the game because Suh clearly had no answer during the game when Jets running back Chris Ivory ran through his attempted tackle as if he was a hologram.

And Joe Philbin believes this season is going to be salvaged?

  76. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

Someone said it today but I forgot
    I guess I am a bad fan

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Naw, you’re a good fan…but I don’t think Terrell Williams will be interim HC…..that’s likely to be a coordinator sadly in our case….lol

  77. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

i dont see how ross can hire any assistant over one of the coordinators. that isnt going to work. so it is either the O or D or ST coach if he even fires blowbin

  78. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The players do bear responsibility as well. Fans are paying big time $$$, as well as the fact that they’re getting paid big $$$ to go out every game and perform to their best ability. The players and coaches should all be ashamed.

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL @ Mike E EVERYONE post
    Perfect

  80. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

I think GDP’s post is the real thing.
Remeber in the game today Fouts was talking about Coyle simplifying the scheem this week

  81. The D line coach is Williams and he was ousted from Oakland and we can all see why.

  82. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    lou,

it is a bad thing i agree. but the players are people like us too. if you are working for a boss you think is an idiot and you dont agree with you do what you have to do to point it out to his boss and up the chain the only way a player can do that is to pretty much quit on the field. if they say anything then they are considered trouble makers and cut from the team. so i get the only way a player can show his discontent for a coach is not to give 100% on the field.

i dont have to like it, but i get it

    • yeah, but these guys aren’t happy with anything? Thursday padded practices, defense is too complicated. What’s next? Now, they don’t like the 2 gap scheme. they want to play a one gap. if they play like they are supposed to play and it doesn’t work then it’s a different story but when you’re NOT playing like you can because you want to make the coach look bad then fuck you. and, it’s ALL Suh and his bad fucking attitude. fuck him and the donkey he rode in on.

  83. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

I would be happy to get Ray Lewis right now if we can get him away from his FOX job or where ever the Hell I’ve been seeing him.
Not much time to really change things up so just take this years playbook and run with it.
He will get a whole lot more out of these guys than Joe Blow.

  84. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    fukin hilarious

  85. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

Wasnt Bowels the D-backs coach when he got the interim job?

  86. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

Oh and wait; Other than Ray Lewis if anyone thinks these are the Guys I want to H/C it is not
Im just trying to guess who Ross will choose to finish out the season.
Then again he might not fire Blow at all

  87. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

    Thanks MikeE
Now I know the D-line coach, whatever the hell his name is will be Ross’ man for the Job

  88. If you look at the resume of every assistant coach on the Phins there isn’t a single guy who’s qualified to coach the team. Probably not a single guy qualified to coach their positions. Ken O’Keefe may be the one guy who could be qualified but he’s about the only one. Rizzi? He’s a fucking bag man for Philby.

  89. Not saying O’Keefe should be the interim either. We could always get the Dr Pepper vendor from the tv commercials. He knows about as much as anyone on the team.
Anyway, it doesn’t matter. When Bowles was with the team there were coaches like him who had qualifications and the Phins blew it when the got rid of him. Then they blew it when they let Rodgers go to New York instead of firing Coyle and giving Rodgers the DC position.
CAN’T WAIT to see how they screw the fucking pooch on this one.

  90. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    lou,

i hear you. like i said i dont have to like it but i understand it.

as far a suhk. i think i was the only one here or one of very few who didnt think it was a good idea. he’s just one player and in a position that really cant dominate a game. and a shit attitude to go with it. i still hope i am wrong but was not a fan of signing him.

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I’m hoping against all logic that we actually make a good decision for a change.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Mike E; When tomorrow’s announcement comes, we’ll ALL AGREE that Ross did NOT fire enough people!! CLEAN HOUSE, STEVE!! That means most/all of the current coaching staff, T-Baum who has “bombed” quicker here than he did in New York, Metamucil Carl Peterson, and any other so-called “advisor” he’s had on the payroll!! –FOR CHRIST’s sake, pay Bill Polian to advise you on WHO, HOW and WHEN certain available people should be brought in TO FUMIGATE THIS SHIT-HOUSE OF A FRANCHISE!!!!!

  92. ocalahowie's avatar ocalahowie says:

    I’m out there thinking and this blew my mind;
I can just see them in the film room as they review a running play that we had blown up for a loss of 3 and Coyle gets all bent out of shape hollering at whom ever that you are not supposed to be in that gap, Your assignment was to be running lateral of the Tight End and get the RB whed he turns the corner

  93. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Just 13 months ago, the Miami Dolphins defeated the New England Patriots 33-20 in week #1 of the 2014 NFL season. New England would rebound from this defeat to WIN SUPER BOWL 49 while Miami would start a downward plunge that now has them near the basement of the National Football League.

How many of you Kool-Aid drinkers think Miami will defeat New England when we play them later this month??

  94. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

On another note, Todd Gurley rushed for 146 yards today. Great showing by the rookie in his first extensive action. I wanted the Dolphins to draft him, but he would probably be dead behind this offensive line if we gave him the ball more than 3 times a game.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Speakinf of draft choices, Brian, did you see Parker cost us a touchdown today when his illegal “pick” negated a TD pass to Stills? (“Speaking”)

  95. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

How the hell are we going to clean house in the middle of the season? We can’t fire everyone and start all over in game 5. Ross had his chance to do this in the offseason and blew it, so another season will be wasted with the current coaching staff, or at least some of them.

  96. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TIME to walk the greyhound and call it a night. Thank goodness NONE of us paid to fly to London to see this fiasco play out!! –Season tix holders ACTUALLY GOT AN INVITATION to join the crowd and see the game at Wembley!!
