Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Season Week 13

ASKMIKELogo

from Lee (Uwantwat)

Q – Mike,

Now we have finally got rid of Lazor do you think we will see any improvement in the Offensive side of the team?
Can young Taylor find the balls to let our RBs actually tote the rock? My personal take on the team is we stuffed up by shifting to
a ZBS OL and moving from a 3-4 Def. We seem to have no clue how to play the game anymore. Your thoughts.
Lee (Uwantwat)

I think we’ll definitely see the offense more balanced with a fair amount of rushing the football. I don’t think it will necessarily be “balls” though, when the HC (interim or not) just fired the previous OC because he wouldn’t allow the offense to run the ball. I think Zac Taylor will mix it up for sure. He’s getting a shot here, and these games will have his stamp on them, win or lose.

We have some seriously fresh horses in the barn, just waiting to run. Lamar Miller has only a little more than half the carries he had last season, 119 carries, he finished the season with 216 last season. Miller is averaging 4.8 YPC, while last year he averaged 5.1. Jay Ajayi is really fresh, after recovering from broken ribs earlier in the season, Ajayi has only 18 carries for 108 yards and a heady 6.0 YPC. Last season at Boise St., Ajayi had 347 carries, so I think Ajayi would love to get some carries the rest of the way. In other words, there is no excuse not to run the ball. The stats bear out when we pass more than 40 times we lose almost every time. Our O-line seems so much more settled when he have balance of rushing to passing.

I think because we’re going to commit to the run, we will see improvement in our offense. Rishard Matthews is banged up, but we drafted Devante Parker for a reason, so now he gets his chance, and it’s time for him to seize the opportunity. I’d also like to see TE Jordan Cameron more involved. He seems very underused for some reason, and I don’t get why. In weeks 3,4 and 5, Cameron was targeted 8,9,8 times, but since then, he hasn’t been targeted more than 5 times. Incidentally, he hasn’t logged more than 4 receptions in a game this season.

Regarding the 3-4 defense as opposed to the 4-3, I think it’s a talent issue, not a scheme issue. Our LB’s are awful, and if we were to change to a 3-4, the only 2 fits I could see at LB would be Vernon (OLB) and Misi (ILB). I don’t think anyone else we currently have on the roster (excluding Dion FF) who fits at LB in the 3-4, and that would also likely mean Suh moving to 3-4 DE, which I’m not sure he would want to do, so I don’t think it’s likely.

from Kong

Q – Tannehill?

Overpaid? Oversacked? Overrated? Underprotected? Underappreciated? All of the above?

I know stats don’t tell the whole story, but it’s really so unfair to cavalierly (thanks Kong!) compare Ryan Tannehill to Chad Henne. Checkdown Chad has 58 TD’s and 63 INT’s and has a less than 60% completion percentage. He has a higher INT % (3.2) than a TD % (3.0). Some people here have gone as far as comparing him to Henne, and that’s just silly. He compares much closer to Superman (Mac Notwen). Ryan Tannehill has a career 62.0 completion %, Cam Newton has a 59.1 %. Ryan has a 4.0 TD %, Cam has a 4.5 TD %. Ryan has a 2.5 INT %, Cam has a 2.8 INT %. Cam had 14,426 passing yards after his first 4 seasons, and Ryan has 14,245 passing yards after 3 season, 11 games. The biggest difference is in rushing yards and rushing TD, where Cam has a huge advantage. Cam had 2571 rushing yards and 33 TD’s, while Ryan only has 817 rushing yards, and 4 TD’s.

Anyway, it’s not really about Ryan vs Cam, or any other QB for that matter. We need a better team, it’s as simple as that. We need better coaching. Tannehill was on the rise until this clusterf*ck of a season happened. We started off slow with Joe Philbin at the helm, we rallied for 2 games against lesser competition and dominated, and then fell back to earth against the Patriots and Buffalo, and then eked out a win against the Eagles, and lost miserably to Dallas and the Jets. It’s so hard to fairly assess Tannehill this year, it just is. I know he hasn’t played his best football, and yes, he seems aloof, or uncaring at times, which admittedly upsets me, but what Ryan needs is Dan Campbell to hug him and tell him “It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” Maybe Ryan says “Not you Dan”, or maybe he just cries like a baby, I’m not sure.

from Rick (GDP)

Q – Dear Axe Mike,

With 5 games left . . .

If you could axe Ross 1 question, what would it be?
…and if you could tell Mancampbell 1 thing what would it be?

Sincerely,
GDP searching 4 answers.

OK, here goes:

Mike E:Mr. Ross, isn’t it about time that we just wipe the slate clean, from the top, all the way to the bottom, find a qualified HC or GM, and start all over, with a new regime entirely, keeping no one currently in office?

Mike E:Dan, I appreciate everything you did for the Dolphins, both as TE’s coach, and as Interim Head Coach, but I think it’s time (Mike E. starts running away) we bring in a qualified (running faster!) Head Coach to run this team, one who can not only inspire the players, but one that ( running even faster now!) (pulls hamstring!) (limping) that can manage a game, and command his staff, one that knows what type of players and schemes on both offense and defense he wants to run, and knows which coaches (out of breath and limping badly) he wants to do this, (as ManCampbell jogs over to a limping Mike E in a menacing fashion) most of all, I thank you, and hope your time as interim HC in Miami affords you better opportunities in the future!

from Stanger

Q – What does Coach Rambo have to do the rest of the year to be our Head Coach next year?  Is there even a chance of it?

stanger

I don’t think if ManCampbell wins out, it’s going to make a difference as to whether he’s in the running for HC next year.
If they want to seriously make changes, and try to create an entirely new system, Campbell’s name shouldn’t be in the running. If Ross insists that we keep Tannenbaum and Hickey, and just try to fill the slot of HC, and coordinators, I think once again, we have made the mistake of not tearing everything down and starting fresh. I suppose if that’s how they go about it, then Campbell may be a contender for the job no matter what we do the rest of this season. I think that would be a shame, no different than keeping Ireland on after Sparano was fired, and no different allowing Joe Philbin to choose a GM that suited him. For once, please do the right thing, and tear it down completely, top to bottom, and build something from the ground up, and stop trying to fit bricks in on the 33rd floor that fit. Enough of that, it doesn’t work!

This is a good opportunity for Zac Taylor to audition for a job elsewhere. Best of luck to him. I agree, even if we win out (not going to happen) the entire coaching staff if gone regardless. THe best I can see us finishing is 7-9 at this point. I would actually be more pissed if we win out, because it will have shown that we were capable of playing well all year, and it will feel like more of a wasted season if we accomplish that.

nice job mike. Agree with most everything you wrote. I agree that Campbell as cool as he is will get the job permanently. Not unless he wins 4 of 5 remaining games. even then I don’t think we’ll go that way.

i agree with Pryor. I would have just left it at, “my job on D is to destroy every offensive player”.

no, the guy is an idiot. no one said anything about the hit, he was called out for celebrating the hit while the player laid hurt on the field. and that is classless, no matter who the player is

  17. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

My thoughts on the next 5 games is that they are very winnable much like the last 3 Miami played in but lost 2. I don’t know if a different OC would have changed the “L” against the Jets but I’m certain another disciplined OC would have kept that game close. Also, a different OC would have won the Cowboys game (Fins had no business losing that game) and wouldn’t have crapped himself vs the Eagles.

I can’t imagine any OC, even a new one like Zac Taylor, can be like Lazor in the run abandonment game. I expect to see RT in less shotgun/single back formations and more emphasis on the classic 5-7 step drop backs under center.

DeVante Parker seems to be coming on now and might have cleared a mental hurdle vs the Jets as to his abilities out there with the discomfort in his foot. He will be an additional weapon down the stretch.

Ja’Wuan James is coming back soon (next week?) and will be strengthening the OL.

Coaches on defense finally wising up and removing Jamar Taylor from the starting lineup in favor of rookie Bobby McCain who had a nice start vs Philly but then inexplicably didn’t see crap vs the Cowboys (max 1 or 2 snaps in that game) while Taylor got roasted some again.

Taylor is better served in the slot where he would play with stuff happening in front of him; his biggest issue is playing with his back to the ball (IMO Bobby McCain is good at running with a WR step for step downfield and anticipating the landing spot).

4 of the next 5 games are at home vs teams with many flaws (as the Fins)
    Ravens: backups everywhere playing
Giants: statistically have the worst defense in the NFL; worst pass defense in the NFL
@ SD: This team is like Miami in that they are a major disappointment with the current talent
Colts: They just aren’t that good either and will be the road team in Miami outside of a dome
NE: They will probably bench half their team in the 2nd H if they can clinch #1 seed soon.

al, didnt say anything about the celebrating i just said doing it over an injured player is classless.

lmao at that video. That chick has a nice core and keeps good balance.

  20. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    FFR,
It’s part of the game; i’d do the same and celebrate over a player that just got ‘jacked-up’ as Matthews was. People do it all the time; it’s not a defensive player’s mentality to think about what just happened to a player other than he just got rocked by a defender.

The funny thing is, i don’t even know the source or context of RT’s comments, I just read what some people wrote about it.

I looked at the video on Vine again and Proyer didn’t even do anything after the hit. He rocked Matthews, stared at him, then started walking away from the play clutching his arm (i’ve seen far worse) LOL.

    al,

i dont know how it all got started either. and from the play i am thinking about was when matthews got hurt i thought the jet player kind of celebrated while matthews laid hurt. if he didnt then ok. my comment was just in general, celebrating over an injured player is classless. as far as it being a jet player, well they are classless just cause they are jet players

  24. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    FFR,
Agree there…I couldn’t stand watching the cameras show Todd Bowles laughing or Ryan Fitzpatrick acting like he was all pro 😦

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I hate the Jest but there was nothing classless or dirty about the hit on Matthews. If I’m on defense I want my guy to do the same exact thing. Make the receiver fear going across the middle within the scope of the rules. Instead of Tanny laying blame, HE should have shown class and accepted the blame himself for the decision to make that throw.

  26. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, the classless talk was about celebrating over an injured player. Got it. That’s different. I don’t remember if that happened.

not from what i recall. yeah it was a bad throw, but matthews was still going to get hit if the throw was right on the money or not. i guess the only difference was matthews might of had his ribs less exposed

  32. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I’m looking over some draft prospects from the 2016/17 class and couldn’t help but notice Michigan’s TE Jake Butt was the #1 prospect at the position for the 2017 SR class.
What a great name for that position LOL

  33. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,

I really don’t have any personal interest in the RT race other than to say that the best way to win a game from a coaching perspective is to lean on team strength to attack an opposing defense.

What we do know about the Fins O is that the OL run blocks a whole lot better than it pass blocks.
Miller is one of the most efficient runners in the NFL on a per carry basis and rookie Jay Ajayi in limited time has shown good efficiency as well. Also, RT is having a hard time completing passes under pressure. Moreover, the hardest pass a QB has to make is the up and out / sideline throw and yet that ding dong Lazor would call those throws on 3rd down all the time without any guys running the drag route underneath half the time.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

We’ll see if anything is different with the next 5 weeks. I think the problem is the scheme. I’d like to see tanny in a seattle/sf style offense. That’s why I would consider greg roman as HC candidate even though he’s never been a hc.

  34. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

But while we are on the RT front, let’s talk about how he might get to 30 TD this year 🙂
He’s at 20 with 5 games to go which means he needs to average 2 per game.
He’s had 2 or more in 8 out of 11 games this season; of those 3 games where he had less, they were all on the road (Week 1 @ WASH = 1 TD; Week 8 @ NE = 0 TD; Week 9 @ BUF = 0 TD)

  35. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
Agree 100% with you on Roman.
Usually successful HC have been successful D or O Coordinators.
Roman fits the bill and should be ready for a promotion 🙂

Hmmm…..I’m not bashing him or you, but I could give a flying f*** how many TDs he gets this year. The W-L record is the only one that counts. If we made it to the SB and he hadn’t thrown a single TD pass I’d be just as happy as if he had 40.

  37. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I have talked about this stat often but once again the PT differential tells the story again about team strength in W-L record.

There are only 14 teams in the NFL in the PLUS points differential category right now and the Fins are the only one in the AFC East in the negative with a -62.

The 3 best teams in points differential are the Pats (+135), Panthers (+127) & Cards (+126). Only 1 other club in the +100 club -> Bengals (+104).

Only 1 team is in the +50 to +100 range -> Chiefs (+64).

    There are 4 teams in the +40 to +49 range -> Packers (+47), Seahawks (+45), Broncos (+45), Jets (+44).

    3 teams between +20 to +39 -> Vikings (+37), Steelers (+36), Falcons (+26).

It was a bad throw no matter what. He didn’t have to throw it to Matthews if he was going to get blown up, but leaving him completely defenseless because he had to reach back is even worse. He was making bad decisions like that all game, forcing throws that had no chance of getting anything.

Other thing to note looking at RT’s stats this year from a QB rating perspective, it’s down on average compared to last year (down to 88 at moment from about 92 last year) but the variation has been less this year (last year he had 8 games were his QB rating was worse than his career average; this year he’s had 4 games where his QB rating was worse than his career average). Conversely, he’s only had 3 games this year where his QB rating has been above 100 (last year he had 6 games where it was above 100).

His career QB rating to date is ~85; right now his season QB rating is still above that number at ~88 so for all those people crying about regression, he’s still trending above his career average this season 🙂

And so running is our best strength and we run something like 3 times a game? I think Lazor’s thinking was this, we are better when we run the ball, so that’s what the other team is going to expect us to do. So to confuse them, we are just going to run a few times and pass the rest, no one would expect that. It’s the double secret confusion offense.

They give you this form to keep track of the hours, you have to put the date, the type of road, the time, from start to finish on each line and you have to bring it along when you take the road test. So guess who hasn’t been keeping up with that? I guess they won’t buy that she drove for 50 hours straight so it’s just a one line entry? 😦

  52. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    gdp,

it is part of the game. if a linemen has the running back roll up on his leg then and hurt him then it is said the running back hurt him. i dont see anything wrong with saying a qb’s pass put the wr in a bad position and got him hurt. it is just part of the game. i dont think it makes the qb look bad, just like it doesnt make the rb look bad if he injures a linemen

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s the whole point man. The play wasn’t going to get us a first down, and the safety was right there, so he would have been better served looking elsewhere, or throwing it away if he was under pressure.

not sure if you are just having fun with it or not. but if you are serious, you are doing exactly what the ones that dont like tanny say. not say anything bad about him. i am pretty sure tanny had a horrible game. and i dont doubt he will have another one at some point in time in his future. it is ok to speak bad of him, it just gets really boring when that is the only flaw pointed out over and over and over and over

  57. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    Al,
QB’s like tanny usually regress when they get the money. I bet next year when he’s playing for another contract he’ll play better.

That’s why I’ve been saying whomever gave tanny the extension a year early should go the way of philbin as well.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

You must have missed the memo. A QB has no impact on wins and losses. We canno hold them accountable for how the team performs. It’s science.

You guys do realize that a QB has options when he drops back to pass, right? He does not HAVE to throw to one specific receiver. That’s why we usually have 4 or 5 on the field all the time. Lol

    gdp,
last time I looked tyrod taylor, and Fitzpatrick are having a much better year than tanny.

The colts played it smart with Luck. They didn’t pay him a year early and he’s actually won some playoff games. We gave an 8-8 qb 100 million. Now we’re stuck with him next year.

You guys and your Wallace bashing. Lol
He’s getting open multiple times a game, and just like when he was here…the QB is not getting him the ball.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He’s so fast he’s invisible. Tanny must have x-ray vision cause he inaccurately threw him close to 70 receptions, close to 1000yds & 10TD’s last season.
Teddy needs to borrow Tanny’s x-ray vision glasses.

  70. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I just don’t think tanny is anything more than a game manager. He won’t win a game for you. He won’t lead you to the playoffs. Game managers like tyrod taylor, alex smith, fitzpatrick etc… are not worth 100 million.

  71. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
Yep because the QB excuse is what Minnesota is going to go with their 8-3 record.
Imagine if Lazor was there to limit AP’s carries; have Bridgewater sling it.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Yes minnesota has the team that works with tanny. Bridgewater is a game manager on a team that plays good defense and runs the ball.

I guess game managing QBs are worth 100million these days in the NFL. So I’m sure both taylor and bridgewater will get a contract like tanny did.

They talk about that regularly here on the radio, and Diggs production is falling off. Wallace is getting open. Bridgewater is not getting him the ball. I’m not saying Wallace is open all the time, but he is getting open 2-3 times a game for what could be big plays. Bridgewater isn’t doing his part. Diggs is also running more intermediate routes and getting YAC. Wallace is not doing either.

Yes, mine failed hers as well the first couple of times. But I don’t see how anyone can take a test for someone else. I’m assuming her brother must be looking pretty girly. The set up here, they have to go back through a secure door to the testing area. They check you in, and she had to leave all her stuff behind with me. And even if it were possible, I wouldn’t be doing that. In the end, that’s not helping her.

  81. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Boulder,
    That’s a fair statement (a game manager doesn’t deserve 100mill).
I don’t think Suh deserves 28 mill per either but i’m not writing the checks and neither Suh or RT are damaging roster decisions right now.
Everyone is freaking out about the cap but those issues can be easily fixed.
Cutting Cam Wake saves $8.4 mill alone.
Cutting Greg Jennings saves $4.5 mill
    Cutting Earl Mitchell saves $2.5
    Cutting Jason Fox saves $1.3
If the team can draft a real TE, they could cut Jordan Cameron and save 9$ mill

    Randy,

I’m just busting your balls a bit. I’m aware that Teddy has some deep throw issues which is affecting Wallace. With Wallace, all you are going to get is a guy who gets open often but can usually only secure the ball without contact. Forget anything involving a block on a run play.

By the way, what’s the deal with some of the Iowa OL up there.

I’ve been trying to look at OL Jordan Walsh and Austin Blythe more.

how many come from behind games has tanny won in the 4th quarter in 4 years? He might be a tiny bit better than taylor or fitizpatrick because I think if they were in the same offense as tanny they would struggle as well. But on a team where they’re not there to win the game just manage the game and don’t “lose” the game, they’re playing fine.

It sounds like that’s what campbell wants from tanny. But our team is build around the QB slinging it. Our FO had this crazy idea that tanny is the next rodgers or brady. He’s far from it.
