Welcome to Ask Mike – 2015 Season Week 13

ASKMIKELogo

from Lee (Uwantwat)

Q – Mike,

Now we have finally got rid of Lazor do you think we will see any improvement in the Offensive side of the team?
Can young Taylor find the balls to let our RBs actually tote the rock? My personal take on the team is we stuffed up by shifting to
a ZBS OL and moving from a 3-4 Def. We seem to have no clue how to play the game anymore. Your thoughts.
Lee (Uwantwat)

I think we’ll definitely see the offense more balanced with a fair amount of rushing the football. I don’t think it will necessarily be “balls” though, when the HC (interim or not) just fired the previous OC because he wouldn’t allow the offense to run the ball. I think Zac Taylor will mix it up for sure. He’s getting a shot here, and these games will have his stamp on them, win or lose.

We have some seriously fresh horses in the barn, just waiting to run. Lamar Miller has only a little more than half the carries he had last season, 119 carries, he finished the season with 216 last season. Miller is averaging 4.8 YPC, while last year he averaged 5.1. Jay Ajayi is really fresh, after recovering from broken ribs earlier in the season, Ajayi has only 18 carries for 108 yards and a heady 6.0 YPC. Last season at Boise St., Ajayi had 347 carries, so I think Ajayi would love to get some carries the rest of the way. In other words, there is no excuse not to run the ball. The stats bear out when we pass more than 40 times we lose almost every time. Our O-line seems so much more settled when he have balance of rushing to passing.

I think because we’re going to commit to the run, we will see improvement in our offense. Rishard Matthews is banged up, but we drafted Devante Parker for a reason, so now he gets his chance, and it’s time for him to seize the opportunity. I’d also like to see TE Jordan Cameron more involved. He seems very underused for some reason, and I don’t get why. In weeks 3,4 and 5, Cameron was targeted 8,9,8 times, but since then, he hasn’t been targeted more than 5 times. Incidentally, he hasn’t logged more than 4 receptions in a game this season.

Regarding the 3-4 defense as opposed to the 4-3, I think it’s a talent issue, not a scheme issue. Our LB’s are awful, and if we were to change to a 3-4, the only 2 fits I could see at LB would be Vernon (OLB) and Misi (ILB). I don’t think anyone else we currently have on the roster (excluding Dion FF) who fits at LB in the 3-4, and that would also likely mean Suh moving to 3-4 DE, which I’m not sure he would want to do, so I don’t think it’s likely.

from Kong

Q – Tannehill?

Overpaid? Oversacked? Overrated? Underprotected? Underappreciated? All of the above?

I know stats don’t tell the whole story, but it’s really so unfair to cavalierly (thanks Kong!) compare Ryan Tannehill to Chad Henne. Checkdown Chad has 58 TD’s and 63 INT’s and has a less than 60% completion percentage. He has a higher INT % (3.2) than a TD % (3.0). Some people here have gone as far as comparing him to Henne, and that’s just silly. He compares much closer to Superman (Mac Notwen). Ryan Tannehill has a career 62.0 completion %, Cam Newton has a 59.1 %. Ryan has a 4.0 TD %, Cam has a 4.5 TD %. Ryan has a 2.5 INT %, Cam has a 2.8 INT %. Cam had 14,426 passing yards after his first 4 seasons, and Ryan has 14,245 passing yards after 3 season, 11 games. The biggest difference is in rushing yards and rushing TD, where Cam has a huge advantage. Cam had 2571 rushing yards and 33 TD’s, while Ryan only has 817 rushing yards, and 4 TD’s.

Anyway, it’s not really about Ryan vs Cam, or any other QB for that matter. We need a better team, it’s as simple as that. We need better coaching. Tannehill was on the rise until this clusterf*ck of a season happened. We started off slow with Joe Philbin at the helm, we rallied for 2 games against lesser competition and dominated, and then fell back to earth against the Patriots and Buffalo, and then eked out a win against the Eagles, and lost miserably to Dallas and the Jets. It’s so hard to fairly assess Tannehill this year, it just is. I know he hasn’t played his best football, and yes, he seems aloof, or uncaring at times, which admittedly upsets me, but what Ryan needs is Dan Campbell to hug him and tell him “It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” It’s not your fault” Maybe Ryan says “Not you Dan”, or maybe he just cries like a baby, I’m not sure.

from Rick (GDP)

Q – Dear Axe Mike,

With 5 games left . . .

If you could axe Ross 1 question, what would it be?
…and if you could tell Mancampbell 1 thing what would it be?

Sincerely,
GDP searching 4 answers.

OK, here goes:

Mike E:Mr. Ross, isn’t it about time that we just wipe the slate clean, from the top, all the way to the bottom, find a qualified HC or GM, and start all over, with a new regime entirely, keeping no one currently in office?

Mike E:Dan, I appreciate everything you did for the Dolphins, both as TE’s coach, and as Interim Head Coach, but I think it’s time (Mike E. starts running away) we bring in a qualified (running faster!) Head Coach to run this team, one who can not only inspire the players, but one that ( running even faster now!) (pulls hamstring!) (limping) that can manage a game, and command his staff, one that knows what type of players and schemes on both offense and defense he wants to run, and knows which coaches (out of breath and limping badly) he wants to do this, (as ManCampbell jogs over to a limping Mike E in a menacing fashion) most of all, I thank you, and hope your time as interim HC in Miami affords you better opportunities in the future!

from Stanger

Q – What does Coach Rambo have to do the rest of the year to be our Head Coach next year?  Is there even a chance of it?

stanger

I don’t think if ManCampbell wins out, it’s going to make a difference as to whether he’s in the running for HC next year.
If they want to seriously make changes, and try to create an entirely new system, Campbell’s name shouldn’t be in the running. If Ross insists that we keep Tannenbaum and Hickey, and just try to fill the slot of HC, and coordinators, I think once again, we have made the mistake of not tearing everything down and starting fresh. I suppose if that’s how they go about it, then Campbell may be a contender for the job no matter what we do the rest of this season. I think that would be a shame, no different than keeping Ireland on after Sparano was fired, and no different allowing Joe Philbin to choose a GM that suited him. For once, please do the right thing, and tear it down completely, top to bottom, and build something from the ground up, and stop trying to fit bricks in on the 33rd floor that fit. Enough of that, it doesn’t work!

  4. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Before they started changing the headhunting rules, you couldn’t throw a slant or crossing pattern into the middle of the field whenever you wanted to because you’d get your receiver killed. It was the QBs responsibility on when to make those kind of throws and it was common to say “the QB got his receiver killed (injured or whatever)”. Reading those middle of the field plays was a necessary skill for QBs to have.

The rule changes have made it harder for defenses to punish those types of pass plays so we see a lot more of them in today’s game. Only really good secondaries consistently punish receivers in the middle now. I’m not sure the younger QBs even develop that awareness now, or worry about getting their receivers hurt.

After seeing that vine of the play, I can see why Tanny made the throw. The defender covered a lot of ground from the opposite side to be in position to make that hit. When I saw it on TV, I thought it was a poor choice by Tanny, but seeing it from that angle, IMO the defender just made a great play.

However, we were unable to convince “JR” to move to Ohio so WE could have an intelligent senator! Anyway, I’ve never thought West Virginia was particularly IQ deficient. Indeed, one of the smartest persons I’ve ever met graduated from WVU’s school of dentistry. He’s an all-around renaissance man with expertise in dozens of subjects outside of dentistry. However, that said, there are large numbers of REALLY smart people down here, too. That’s partly due to 8 state universities with enrollments ranging from near 25,000 to nearly 50,000 (UCF). Throw-in West Florida, Bethune Cookman, Florida A&m and Florida Tech and you’ve got more smart people. -Plus there’s more than 20 private universities, including that one in Coral Gables where Miss Gigi graduated from. Florida still has a way to go to climb into the upper echelon, but I believe the incoming Speaker of the Florida House has committed more millions in increased funding to “help make it happen.” ZERO sarcasm.

I’m not necessarily saying it was a good throw; it’s more about the decision to make the throw.
Regarding the throw I don’t know if maybe Tanny saw the defender at the last second and it affected the throw, or maybe he tried to pull his receiver away from the hit by throwing slightly behind him……….or maybe it was a bad throw, lol.

Many people that work in DC have graduated with MBA’s and PhD’s graduated from Virginia educational universities. This is because of the the military presence in the North East. ————-
BTW (“By The Way,” NOT “Bite the Weenie”)–Mike that was another solid effort. I completely agree with you on the need for a total overhaul from top to bottom. And, the FIRST place Ross should start is Metamucil Carl Peterson, otherwise known in Kansas City as the Enemy of the Season Ticket Holder for all the things he did to once-loyal fans of the Chiefs. I have little doubt that King Carl’s “Shaft the Ticket Holder’s” Philosophy is behind the recent ticket price hikes and stadium improvement delays announced by the Dolphins. Peterson needs to go NOW. Anything I can do to hasten his departure (like cutting off his metamucil supply) I’d be more than willing to do.
#2) TANNENBAUM MUST GO NOW!! –After getting fired by the Jets, T-Baum spent several hundred million of Ross’s money TO PRODUCE A TEAM THAT’S WORSE THIS YEAR THAN THEY WERE LAST YEAR!!!!! AND, thanks largely to T-Baum, we are in salary cap hell!!! –OFF WITH HIS HEAD!!
#3) All of us who called for Philbin’s head 2 years ago HAVE BEEN PROVEN RIGHT!!–Now Ross IS the guy who approved this hire. But I’m guessing that Peterson gave Ross the green light on this, just as he did for countless other botched decisions Ross has made since he bought the team. But make NO mistake: the upcoming hire for head coach MUST be a good one!! Instead of seeking advice from Flunkie #1 or Flunkie #2, Ross SHOULD ASK BILL POLIAN for a list of 5 names he SHOULD BE CONDIDERING to select the Dolphins’ next head coach. Betcha’ Polian the Hall-of-Famer WON’T have Parcells, Sparano, Philbin or some other goofball on his “LIST OF 5.” –We ALL believe Ross has been poorly advised. It’s high time he listened to a Hall-of-Famer!
#4) NOT sure if Hickey should be retained. He’s CERTAINLY MADE BETTER PICKS than his predecessor, Jeff Ireland But, at a minimum, the scouting department needs to be upgraded. –Again, Bill Polian COULD, no doubt, give Ross a couple of names that would significantly upgrade our scouting department. Is ROSS SMART ENOUGH to take the advice of a proven winner??–I hope Ross makes it REALLY CLEAR to Polian that he, Polian, will be appropriately compensated for his advice!! And Polian won’t even have to quit his full-time job as an analyst for the NFL Network. He can just take on this little task in his spare time!!
    —————–
ROSS ALSO needs expertise in the ticketing and public relations area. Right now, WAY TOO MANY season tix holders HATE HIS GUTS!! But that can be remedied, too! –THAT will be the subject of another future post.

If we run a normal offense with more under center, commitment to the run and more play-action and have success, I’m going to lose my fuckin mind! LOL
    ———————–
LOL, I will be right there losing my mind with you.

Oh, and thank the heavens you’re back, Tim. You hadn’t posted in like 2 days. Some people were going nuts and talking crazy. There was even talk of a think piece entitled: “Where’s Tim? A FinsMob documentary into the life and disappearance of Tim Knight.”

        Glad you’re feeling better, bro.

  54. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If we start running a real offense, and we start tearing it up under the new OC, then I figure Lazor deserves a mild beating at the hands of Dolphins fans, at the very least he should be required to sit still for a few hours of in your face verbal abuse, lol.

That’s a tactic they use so lets allow lots of refugees into the country because I’m sure none of them will be terrorists and then Obama can focus on guns being the problem.

We have our own nut jobs already that are almost impossible to detect until they act. These foreign terrorists are militants who don’t care if they acquire shit legal or illegally (I know the guns were obtained legally in this instance) but they can go the illegal route easily because they don’t plan on going to jail for it, they will die fighting after they commit their carnage.

yeah, to bad my parents never told me about the van with candy.

  87. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I profile all the time. It’s nature. That doesn’t just mean black people or Muslim looking people or suspicious Hispanics etc. It means anyone I deem suspicious including the red headed bearded dude who is acting weird or the white woman who looks like she’s up to no good. Am I suppose to close my eyes and pretend all is good and there is no suspicion? You know when you see something isn’t right. I don’t care what they look like.

When law enforcement officials say the perps look Middle Eastern I don’t look for Swedish looking people. Let’s stop telling people to be instinctively stupid. It’s stupid.

We have an enemy from a certain region and faith and if you want to ignore it in the name of the innocent, go ahead, but we don’t know what some of these people are up to because many of them pretend to assimilate and then strike. They even build up that trust for years. That’s our enemy and that’s the only way they can accomplish their agenda because they can’t do it militarily. So just keep saying awe come on, not all of of them are like that. That’s not the point. The militants disguise themselves as ‘not all of them are like that’. We still treat it as if we can’t treat it like that. Okay, this will never end then. Enjoy!
