Game Wrap Up: Ravens @Dolphins

The Ravens came to South Florida on Sunday in a battle of two teams that played the 2015 football season like poop.

The Dolphins would win!

Allright Miami!!!

Parkersky

The first score of the day would come on a Parker leaping catch.  Look at that air.  Parker started at caught 3 passes for 63 yards.

The Dolphins actually only had 86 yards passing.  So there wash;t much of an ariel attack with the exception of this game.

That’s why I am going to give you a second look at the catch.

Here is a pig’s interpretation of the catch

ParkerSkies

Most of the offense on the day was provided by Lamar Miller who rushed for 113 yards on 20 carries.

Yes 20 carries!  That isn’t a typo.

MillerHandof

The Dolphins planned to finally have some balance after firing Lazor…but they may have pushed a little too far in the other direction since the only offense on the day was on the ground.

Ryan Tannehill completed 9 of 19 passes for 86 yards.  This is the 4th week in a row in which Tannehill failed to throw complete 60%.  Given the nature of this offense – that’s a pretty awful stat.

VernonSack

But the defense had a strong game.  Two of our defensive ends stood out.  Olivier Vernon and Derrick Shelby.  Vernon had 2.5 sacks on the day.

Shelby was also hitting Schaub hard all day and he scored the Dolphins only other TD on tip and interception return.  It was a terrific play by Shelby.

JonesINT

And when we talk about defense – you can’t leave out Reshad Jones.  Jones had 10 tackles and an interception.  His interception set up the Parker touchdown.

If Jones doesn’t make the pro bowl this year, the pro bowl should be thrown in a dumpster…

With the win the Dolphins collect their 5th win of the year.  And that probably takes them out of the top 5 of the draft.  So say goodbye to a top 5 pick.

I don’t know where NCST QB Jacoby Brissett will end up being evaluated as a NFL QB but this guy has spectacular touch on some of his throws.

We needed a QB badly in 2012 after 17 bad horrible QB’s since Marino.
Tanny was drafted in the 1st, something we haven’t done since Marino.
Since and including that 2012 draft thru the 2015 draft, Tanny seems to be right up there as a very solid choice with promise if you look around and think about it objectively.

I’ve always maintained. Keep adding to the building blocks of the making of a great team around your invested QB.
Building blocks that could block would help too. 😉

Honestly this was exactly my thinking until this year. I still hold out hope it’s just a bad year and he can turn it around next year. But 15 years of futility and the QB carousel we’ve dealt with has left me with little faith.

    GDP,
I been looking at Doughty but his throws sometimes have some float (when he’s pressured). I guess there are footwork issues there to work on. I think his pocket presence is decent and he tries to make quick decisions at times. He seems to torque his body though on throws at times.

  15. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

By the way, if you want to chew on a defensive stat, then here it is (through Week 12 since Week 13 doesn’t end till after tonight’s game)…

    http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl

Look at “Stuffed” rank for Miami’s DL (this statistical page is dedicated to DL efficiency): 10th

As defined by Football Outsiders -> Stuffed: Percentage of runs where the running back is tackled at or behind the line of scrimmage.Ranked from most stuffs (#1) to fewest stuffs (#32)

Other notes on reading the table data:

A team with a high ranking in Adjusted Line Yards but a low ranking in Open Field Yards has a strong defensive line but its linebackers and secondary have difficulty in pursuit and tackling. A team with a low ranking in Adjusted Line Yards but a high ranking in Open Field Yards generally allows runners to get past the defensive line but the linebackers and secondary are good at pursuit and tackling. A low ranking in Adjusted Line Yards with a high ranking in Open Field Yards is often an indicator of a 3-4 defensive scheme, though there are exceptions.

Fins rank 13th in Adjusted Line Yards (yards given up to a RB per carry but on a statistically adjusted basis to account for down, distance, situation, opponent, and the difference in rushing average between shotgun compared to standard formations).

Fins rank 29th in Open Field Yards given up; 28th in 2nd Level Yards given up.

The data points to our LB stinking :/

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We see it all the time. We makes plays in the backfield every week then allow massive chunk runs out of nowhere. We had a great goal line stand yesterday where I felt the Ravens should of kicked the FG. Guess how many points they lost by? 😉

  20. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Going back to the DL efficiency numbers…

Football Outsiders’s DL table data (last one on the page) shows a % of plays that teams run in the direction of the DL through 5 spots: Left End, Left Tackle, Between the OG, Right Tackle, & Right End (these 5 spots are in the perspective of offense, e.g. LEFT END = RDE on defense).

In terms of % vs NFL average; the Left End is the area teams like to attack more often than not. I’ll post what percentage of plays teams have run in a particular direction and in parenthesis put what the NFL average is for teams going into those directions.

    LEFT END = 18% (11%)
    LEFT TACKLE = 10% (13%)
    BETWEEN OG = 52% (53%)
    RIGHT TACKLE = 10% (13%)
    RIGHT END = 9% (10%)

I did yell a couple of times when tanny’s passes were sailing over receivers heads and we had a couple of bad drops. One by cameron was terrible but we were called for holding anyway so it didn’t matter.

What is up with offside penalties? A few times we had them in 3rd and 8 or more then an offside gave them an easy 3rd down to convert. We got very lucky to win that game.

  22. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Hi Ken,
I’ll take the victory any way I can see it LOL
4 more to go; all are winnable in that the opponent has major flaws (like Miami has).
Giants offense is good but their D is pretty lousy and since Miami’s major issue in winning games is the offensive output; that should make it ‘competitive’ for Miami to take it. Ravens ran a 3-4 which they seem to have a harder time with than vs a 4-3 alignment (just an observation of mine; especially with how RT has to scan the field when guys are dropping back into covereage not to mention the big NT punishing the undersized Fins C-OG).

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Well, forget all 4…NE has issues but would beat Miami with their current unit IMO. I was hoping for NE to have clinched #1 by Week 17 so they could bench half their team in the 2nd HALF of that matchup but last night’s result puts that in jeopardy LOL. At this point injuries for NE is the only advantage Miami can hope for.

YOUNG STANGER: IN CASE you missed my report late last night on the prior blog, I REALLY enjoyed your company at the game. Your standing up and pointing to “FIELDS” on the back of your jersey (after a poor punt by Miami) was truly EPIC!! We had a great time, didn’t we??–The 300 mile drive back to Tampa Bay was much easier after A WIN!!
    ———————
OD — I absolutely did (and even it was not quite “epic”….was fun). i’m like your mother-in-law, always there even if you don’t see me.

In that case didn’t respond back cause it was end of last page. We had a great time my bud. No one I would rather sit next to at Sunlife.

And I’ll bring up to the crew…OD has seasons and does that 600 mile commute to each game. Only person sorry about that is Ross. 🙂

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

I saw them 3 or 4 times between the mid 80’s and 2012. First show was my favorite (Hollywood Sportatorium). Last show was because my wife bought me tickets for my birthday. They were awesome and had more followers in the business than most because of their musicianship. I think he’ll do exactly what Bruford has done- say he’s retired and stay that way. He’ll be writing books that will keep him in the public eye (marginally), but he won’t be doing many appearances if any. Rush the band is no more. Sciatica for Lifeson, arthritis for Peart, lost vocal range for Lee.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s interesting how people rate musicians. I have a friend who is a drummer, more so back in the day then now. But he was a huge Rush fan and loved Neil Peart. Back in September on the anniversary of John Bonham’s death we had a discussion on Facebook and he said ‘the best’ meaning Bonham. I said wow, I always thought you were a Neil Peart guy and he said “Love Neil, but Bonzo was an innovator. Neil is an interpreter. A damn good one, but an interpreter, nonetheless.”

I’ve always loved Bonzo and his power, but if you really listen to his intricacies within the tunes, he employs a lot of jazz elements and other unique techniques. His stuff isn’t easy to play the right way. His bass foot was amazing and he had really quick hands and made a 5 piece kit sound like a wall of drums where Peart used a wall of drums. I like Peart a lot too though. Bill Bruford is another drummer I’ve always loved, he’s also very unique.

      • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

Bonham was an innovator- I absolutely love listening to him, but he lacked nuance. Bruford was the best a syncopations I ever heard. It may be fair to say Peart was an interpreter- but he could play just about any style convincingly and never gave up trying to improve himself. Those 3 comprise my 3 favorite drummers.

A LOCAL PAPER erroneously reported that today was the anniversary of the infamous “SNOWPLOW GAME” between the Dolphins and the Patriots. Actually, December 12 is the correct anniversary of that first of many nefarious and blatantly improper actions taken on behalf of the Patriots franchise. The game, played in a snowstorm in the 4th quarter, was tied at 0-0 with about 4-5 minutes left in the game. At the direction of Patriots’ head coach Ron Meyer, criminal Mark Henderson (out on work release) was sent out onto the playing surface to clear the area for a New England field goal attempt. The kick was good, prompting an immediate protest by Miami head coach Don Shula when the game ended 3-0. Shula complained to commissioner Pete Rozelle that the plowing gave the Pats’ an unfair advantage. Rozelle agreed, but, since there was no specific rule against using a plow, Rozelle declined to change the results of the game. During the off season, the NFL DID BAN the use of snow plows at any league games.
    ————–
But Miami would gain their revenge later that year. Because of the strike-shortened 9-game season, the NFL expanded the playoffs to 8 teams from each conference. Round One of the AFC Playoffs pitted the #2 seed Miami hosting the AFC’s #7 seed, the Patriots, in the historic Orange Bowl. A HUGE sign in the East end zone proclaimed “No Snow Plow Today!” And, indeed, in a game I attended, a game I called “Son of Snow Plow,” the Miami Dolphins, led by QB David Woodley, HAMMERED New England 28-13 in a game more lopsided than the score. That win propelled Miami to a dream rematch of the previous year’s colossal playoff game in which the Chargers defeated the Dolphins in overtime in what most believe was the greatest game in Dolphins history! THIS TIME, WOODLEY and the Dolphins would gain revenge by crushing Dan Fouts and his Chargers 34-14!! THAT win got Miami into the AFC Championship Game against the hated NEW YORK JETS, again in the historic Orange Bowl. And we all know who won that game, DON’T WE, KIDDIES!!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOU can make a strong case for that, FFR. Woodley would go on to complete his first pass in Super Bowl XVII for a 70-yard touchdown to Jimmy Cefalo. But he only completed 3 more passes THE ENTIRE GAME!! –AMAZINGLY, Miami still led that game early in the 4th quarter, thanks to their “KILLER B’s” defense. But John Riggins’ 4th down touchdown run later in the game sealed the Redskins’ victory. A few years’ later Woodley was traded to Pittsburgh and was soon cut, due to his alcoholism. He died of liver cancer a few years later.

    Tim,
I don’t mean to downplay Bonham’s abilities. I cannot do with my bass foot what he could, so the best I could ever do was modified or variations of triplets. He was the master at it. And I do not mean that Bonham was without the ability to vary his style, but he did not demonstrate a lot of it during his time- he was consistently hard-hitting through most of his catalog.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Agreed on rating musicians against each other. There was a time I might fight someone for saying anything bad about Peart, but I’ve come to appreciate different drummers for different abilities.
Copeland is great with middle-eastern beats- his ability to work off the down beat is tremendous.
Alex Van Halen might be the most underrated drummer in rock history- I particularly like his offbeat abilities.

“On 24 September 1980, Bonham was picked up by Led Zeppelin assistant Rex King to attend rehearsals at Bray Studios for a tour of North America, to begin 17 October in Montreal, Canada – the band’s first since 1977. During the journey, Bonham asked to stop for breakfast, where he drank four quadruple vodkas (16 shots, between 400–560 ml). He then drank after arriving at rehearsals. The band stopped rehearsing late in the evening and then retired to Page’s house, the Old Mill House in Clewer, Windsor. After midnight on Thursday, 25 September, Bonham fell asleep; someone took him to bed and placed him on his side. Benji LeFevre, Led Zeppelin’s tour manager, and John Paul Jones found him dead the next afternoon.[16] Bonham was 32.

The inquest on 27 October 1980 showed that in 24 hours Bonham had drunk around 40 shots (1–1.4 litres) of 40% ABV vodka, after which he vomited and choked. The finding was accidental death.[16] An autopsy found no other drugs in Bonham’s body.[17] Bonham’s remains were cremated and his ashes interred on 12 October 1980, at Rushock parish church, Worcestershire.
John Bonham’s gravestone at Rushock Parish churchyard, Worcestershire, with drumsticks left in tribute by fans.

The remaining members disbanded Led Zeppelin rather than replace him. They said in a press release on 4 December 1980: “We wish it to be known that the loss of our dear friend and the deep respect we have for his family, together with the sense of undivided harmony felt by ourselves and our manager, have led us to decide that we could not continue as we were.” It was signed “Led Zeppelin”.

Jimmy Page was so distraught he couldn’t pick up his guitar for about a year or so. Out of respect for John his son Jason is the only drummer they will play with. Except for Phil Collins at the No Nukes concert which was horrible. I think that was the show.
