Game Day – Patriots @ Dolphins

Capture

Last game of the season.  It turned out a lot different than what we all had hoped for a few short months ago.  Even though it won’t matter, I hope they manage to somehow pull off a miracle and win this game.  It would make this long off season ahead a little easier.

For those who are observant, you’ll notice the record is wrong, I set this up at the same time as last weeks game.  It’s hard to whip up much enthusiasm so I thought I’d go ahead and get it out of the way.  We probably lost last week anyway.

Let’s Go Dolphins.

There was no formal 1st interview with Mike Shanahan by the way. Mr. T confirmed that in the interview. So get ready for more inaccurate reports as reporters try to hit .300 in predictions. LOL

Well exactly. As Jahn mentioned he didn’t know what coach is good, where to start, etc etc. Frankly none of us really do that much.

    getter and jahn,

i so gety that. none of us know a damn thing more then the people that do it every day. but that is why sports chat is so much fun. we get to act like we do. like any of us really know if tanny is bad or good or what the real problems are with this team. but that is what makes this place tick. everyone with an opinion and the banter that goes back and forth.

well except for jahn, we know his opinion is fact. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think fans need to become more reserved in their evaluations of their teams from top to bottom. There is so much that we don’t know so it is just gobbledygook after awhile. LOL

What has always stuck with me is what Parcells said in #1 of his 11 QB Commandments: Ignore other opinions – Press or TV, agents or advisors, family or wives, friends or relatives, fans or hangers on – ignore them on matters of football, they don’t know what’s happening here.

With that, we really don’t. We make stuff up about what Aponte’s roll in the building is and how GMs are just Tannenbaum hand puppets. LOL

We can all see some of what appears on the field and make pretty accurate assumptions of what’s going on, but in the big scheme of things we don’t always know what went wrong and why that play didn’t work.

I just hope we start getting it right and it’s fun again. All this FO Org talk is too much. I want to talk about matchups and schemes in our upcoming playoff game. 🙂

There’s going to be a purge of talent but that doesn’t mean we’ll definitely be bad this year. The philosophy is going to change to more balance and physicality. You watch. It doesn’t take 3-4 years anymore if you get it right and build on the good players you have.

come on tim. that is the best part about being a fan. we dont have to be anything but a fan. we can talk all the crap we want and it doesnt effect anything about the team. some can say tanny suck some can say he is great. hell randy gets to defend the oline and that is what is so great about it. we are just that, fans. we dont have any outcome on a game we just get to talk all the shit we want and try and sound like we know things but at the end of the day we are nothing but fans. fans that just dont have to be resered. if some fans want to swallow all the gobbleygook in the off season then get to bitch about it afterwards they get too.

But things get emotional sometimes about it based on limited knowledge no matter how much we delve into it. We’re not there. We don’t really know what’s going on inside the building or with certain decisions and plays or why. But we can say some of those play calls were ridiculous and you know why, you’ve done that all year in the same situation and it fails most of the time. LOL

    tim,

yeah here at times things get emotional. but to me it is simple. just have to first and foremost remember this is just a blog. second, everyone here is after the same goal. a winning football team that some day before we all die we get to experience another sb victory. third, it is only ones opinion, nothing more.

none of us really know more then those in charge of the team. yeah we can all say from our tv ‘that was a stupid play; but bottom line is we dont know enough to be working for the team. we are all nothing but fans and as fans we get to say any fucking thing we want.

i rambled on during the fsu game and calling jimbo fisher dumbo fisher. he won a national championship just 3 years ago. he knows way way more then i do. but i am a fan so i get to call him out even though i am the fool doing it. but that is what us as fans get to do, be foolish with no repercussions

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No worries! I’m not predicting shit. I hope this regime gets it right and it is a totally new regime once we finalize the HC. You can see this team wants to get away from the style we’ve been playing in everything this new regime has done starting with hiring Campbell as the interim HC. They went with a more physical oriented coach. He wasn’t going to change the entire mentality of the team in-season after they’ve been doing it one way for years.

I think Belichick was worried about his team at this time health-wise and he was nervous we would play a last hoorah game for Campbell being pissed off at the season. Belichick played the game that way, and he still got Brady banged up but he was right. We outplayed them. To quote Yogi Berra; the Pats usually win that game every time. LOL

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

…and I like the 1 back & 2 TE’s. You can run well from this or have 3-4 guys out in the passing lanes…..or clearing a spot for Tanny to run if he pulls it down & takes off.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Or like Washington did keep 6 in to pass pro and send 2nd TE to probowl (hope that not as bad a need next year) not sure Reed is probowl but he had some crazy games

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Landry, Parker and Sims with a FB and/or if we retain Cameron which I’m not sure we do with his wage, can run this formation. Still need a more FB type guy but I think if you can find a back with some size, decent skills and a willing blocker, you can do these types of things without having to bunch up 5-6 guys to execute a play.

  32. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I do hope O line is good enuff that we don’t NEED to keep a TE in to pass pro every play

  33. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

OD, Patricia is running Belicheat’s Defense and the history with Bill’s coaches is not too good when they move on. It’s like he deprograms them or something…lol

Hue Jackson came from a good programs except Oakland, but he’s been short lived in them. He’s a mystery in a way, and might one that’s better off to stay a OC.

Toba, you missed making your picks this last week. 😦

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw more of the offensive system Sunday that I want to see moving forward. Still stop resorting to shotgun so often.

I liken Landry to a Hines Ward and Parker to a Michael Irvin. Make plays at TE and run the ball. It’s not that complicated. It helps the defense too. I would try to keep the opponent’s LBs on the field who can’t stay with anyone.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sounds reasonable to me. Seems they were finally getting further away from Lazor’s Fk’d system. It takes awhile on the fly.
Look forward to next season with a proper system in place. Too bad Campbell had to bear the brunt of mop up duty with a gutted coaching staff.
But I think he opened some eyes, if not for now, then down the road. I just hope it’s in the NFC & not beating our tails in the AFC….lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah, left out RT breaking a run. Get him on the move in the passing game and easy rushing yardage will be there. It can frustrate defenses. Keep it simple and build it around your talent. I think you can do that with Tannehill, Landry, Parker, Cameron, Sims, Ajayi and even Williams in a role. Maybe he becomes FB guy. He’s an excellent receiver. Can he become a blocker?

Then add another physical back and WR. Stills gives you some wheels on the cheap.

  37. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Man WTF? 418 in last place in our division we were assigned a brutal schedule. just look at our away games . We potentially have 3 west coast games if the Rams relocate to Los Angeles.

Away opponents (*playoff team): New England Patriots*, New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals*, Baltimore Ravens, St. Louis Rams, Seattle Seahawks*, San Diego Chargers.

  40. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Looking at our opponents for next year home and away I can only see us eaking out a 5 and 11 season. 4-12 more likely. I hope the kool-aid infuses my veins this offseason and I feel better about it as opening day arrives but right now I do not see much hope for even getting to 500

Next year we play the Titans, 9’ers, Ravens, Browns, and Chargers who are just as bad or worse than we are. I don’t care about this year’s results with a new staff coming in. I don’t think we will have a winning record just because of who we play but our players will get lots of exp with playing against the best opponents. Maybe 6-10 but who knows?

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Can’t tell anything by the schedule right now. I just worry about our own team. If we’re a good team, it doesn’t matter who we play, and if we’re a bad team, well, it doesn’t matter anyway.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess what I’m saying is the schedule doesn’t matter either way. So many things can/will happen before the season starts, I can’t worry bout who we’re playing quite yet. 1-5 in our division says it all anyway. That’s where we need to improve for sure.

  44. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The schedule is never what it appears in January.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yessir! Not sure when it will happen, because the Bengals are obviously in the playoffs. If they lose, it can happen next week. Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs, and McCarron isn’t likely to lead the team to a win, so . . . .

I think Dalton gives them the best chance to win though

  46. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I’m pretty confident that if we score a good many points while keeping our opponents score low we’ll have a pretty good shot at winning some games next year.

  47. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’ve been thinking more about this coaching search and I really think we should at least interview coughlin. I think with coughlin we can turn this around pretty quick. He is a proven winner and his players like to play for him. I would rather have coughlin than any other candidates with HC experience like smith, marrone, or shanahan.

IF we go with a younger coordinator then we decided to allow them to learn on the job a little. With coughlin we hit the ground running and you know he wants to win quickly because of his age.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The thing with Coughlin or Shanahan is that they might be able to keep Dan Campbell on staff, and groom him to take over in a few years. I like Campbell, I just don’t think he’s ready to be the HC quite yet.

exactly. I think coughlin will keep campbell on staff and maybe give him assistant HC job or something. Coughlin will also change the culture much easier.

I’m not a fan of shanahan because of what happened in denver at the end of his tenure here. I just don’t see him as the solution for the phins.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I also think belicheat would rather us taking shanahan than coughlin. Coughlin is belicheat and brady kryptonite.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hear ya Boulder. I didn’t really pay too much attention to what happened with Shanahan in DEN, so I’ll defer to you on that. I wouldn’t be upset if we hired Coughlin with the idea that Campbell is being groomed to take over in a couple of years, if they feel Campbell is the future coach of this team. Coughlin is a great coach, he’s won at both stops (JAX,NY), and he’s well respected, and will easily be able to hire the coordinators he wants to.

Growing consensus that our FO really likes Campbell & if he isn’t hired as permanent HC, then they want the new HC to retain him on the staff in some capacity.
So keep looking for the older experienced HC candidates to be mostly likely to be hired as they groom Campbell a lil more over next 3 years.

This eliminates the young ones like Gase, but why hire him anyways, when you got young up n coming in Campbell.

No wonder the attention was on Mike Shanahan, & now perhaps Coughlin.
Mike Smith is interesting, cause he may actually been asked about being DC & asst HC here if Campbell stays as the Phins HC.

A few ways this can go. Seems the FO, Tbomb, is enamoured with Mancambell.
The fans love him, the players love him. Could be a smart move if I’m Ross looking at what’s best for the franchise & bottom dollar overall.

If you have good skill players, out of this formation you keep the opponents LBs on the field in base creating different mismatches. It also allows you to run a versatile playbook without changing personnel all the time.

I’m not saying play the classic pro set all the time, but there is no reason you can’t utilize it more. I have nothing against the 3 WR set with one back, but mix it up and you can run any of it from under center as opposed to always being in shotgun.

    WTF
    that is not innovative
that’s just not doing something else – that is not new
I don’t understand WTF coaches are thinking some time
that is not cutting edge stuff, that is just limiting an offense

I don’t think Bill Walsh became the face of an offensive guru by saying – “you know what, lets not do a lot of stuff, that will catch people off guard”

Tim, especially with a bad OL in pass protection, why have 3 WR sets & 1 back in shotgun.

  83. Randy's avatar Randy says:

We are not going to become anything close to a power running team. The NFL simply doesn’t work that way anymore. Teams almost never go the distance with that sort of offense anymore unless it’s coupled with a great defense. You need to be able to score in the passing game.
    ***
This is a passing league, and if we’re gonna compete for championships we need to improve that component. Yes, improving our balance is going to be helpful, but we will remain a pass-first team. That’s not going to change. We could see a reduction in pass attempts, but I doubt it will be significant. We still need to see a big improvement in scoring from our passing game.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Ok, forget the word ‘power’. We can be a dangerous running team with the likes of Miller & Ajayi used correctly. Miller & our backs are also a weapon in the passing game. This is how a true WCO ala Walsh operates, with the short to intermediate passing game that also isn’t afraid of the deep vertiacl strikes now and again.

Miami has been set up for this, but coordinators got it all wrong trying to do too much spread option & pistol strictly from shotgun formations.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Who said power running team? We were saying nothing wrong with that formation and personnel set some of the time. Plenty of teams still use it, just not us very often but even we did.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think if we hire Mike Smith we likely come close as the modern NFL allows. When I have been reviewing what offensive scheme he tends to like to pair with his defense its a type of power run.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Yeah I agree
but balance is key to making the passing game effective
and diversifying the playbook is huge as well

We tried to be an offense that used the edges of the filed only
and ran the ball less than 15 times a game
and that is not an effective gameplan even if executed well

  87. D's avatar D says:

What I think we were all expecting, because I still don’t know wtf Lazor actually intended, was a balanced WCO scheme, something similar to what shanahan rus, similar to what Philly did with LeSean, or Reid is doing in KC. We seriously missed the mark if that really what was intended, but again, his offense was so schizophrenic I’m not sure what he was really doing, nor am I sure he did either

  88. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    D,
Smith has a history of playing conservatively….relying on a running game and defense. The exact formula that gets you nowhere against good teams….unless you have an awesome defense and running game. I just don’t see that changing….unless Smith changes his philosophy.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He was heard in his interview claiming that he learned his lesson.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think you are right there. You have to get a lead and then grind out the game and we aren’t offensively set up for that. I’m doing some reviews of the coaches and I actually have Smiths offensive scheme as a con not because I disagree with it because it’s anti our current personnel.

It also is an offense where run sets up a vertical passing game and that definitely hasn’t been our strong suit. Players like Cameron, Stills, and Parker would thrive in that system, but Tanny would have to really adapt, and our OL would have to be completely retooled

  92. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think fans are getting carried away with the Lazor bashing. Personally, I don’t like how he called games, and it was frustrating. But, our offense really wasn’t THAT different than others. All teams use shotgun formation…a lot. They also run out of it…a lot. They also throw WR screens…a lot. I think bashing Lazor helps fans kind of ignore just how bad other parts of our offense were. We simply didn’t execute very often. The plays WERE there to be made many times…we simply didn’t make them. That’s not Lazor’s fault. He’s being scapegoated a little, I think.
    ***
First, fans said he was a great young offensive mind…then maybe even HC material….now, he’s not good enough to drive the team shuttle. Lol

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

the scheme didn’t fit the personnel. Not sure what scheme would fit our oline other than huck it deep down the field on all 3 downs 🙂

Hmm, lets see, could it be….the OL! (satan) in my best Dana Carvey church lady voice.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He called asinine plays on down and distance situations that made no sense. Not just fans said this, the announcers who called the games were just as baffled, they just didn’t realize he does it every week. I’ve been down on him and his offense since early last year. It has nothing to do with scapegoating, I think he sucked.

    • D's avatar D says:

I don’t think WCO was the issue. I don’t think you need to be run heavy to succeed. I dont thing hiw many snsos were in shitgun has much to do eith it ( of course except when it was short yardage run diwns and he had us in shitgun, or when we wrte backed into oyr iwn endzones and he called fir shotgun) The thing I don’t like about him and the reason I do think he contributed heavily to the failures on offense was not establishing and identity on that side of the ball. He would feint tempo then back of of it somewhat then abandon it. He did same with the running game. It’s true there was poor execution but I felt a real sense if a team that did not know snap to snap what they were, what the were doing. Combine that with almost no concept of playcalliing in down and distance situations and it was a complete cick up.

  93. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Boy, you guys want it both ways. Lol
