Game Day – Patriots @ Dolphins

Capture

Last game of the season.  It turned out a lot different than what we all had hoped for a few short months ago.  Even though it won’t matter, I hope they manage to somehow pull off a miracle and win this game.  It would make this long off season ahead a little easier.

For those who are observant, you’ll notice the record is wrong, I set this up at the same time as last weeks game.  It’s hard to whip up much enthusiasm so I thought I’d go ahead and get it out of the way.  We probably lost last week anyway.

Let’s Go Dolphins.

    Jahn,
Dungy was a coach before the Rooney rule and he got interviews beforehand. I’m not saying it invalidates what you are saying but I see people go to Dungy as an example in this debate all the time and he’s not applicable. I can post more about the history of the rule and it’s time line when I get home. I just hate typing these things on my phone.

Ex-Giants coach Tom Coughlin is open to continuing his career.
Both ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport have reported so. Coughlin’s departure from the Giants has been termed a resignation, not a retirement. Coughlin turns 70 in August, but perhaps he could interest a team that believes it’s close to competing. We ultimately suspect Coughlin won’t be on the sidelines in 2016.

    jahn and piggy,

both of you alluded to this, and i have no way of knowing, but i would like to think in this day and age that without the rule, that owners would still be interviewing and hiring the best person for any job. i get back in the culverhouse days it was the good ole boy factory. but i think the nfl is a different place now and the owners would without the rule hire the best person. remember there was a time they wouldnt draft black qb’s. there is no rule in place for that and look around at how that changed.

the nfl isnt like running a business. it is a very competitive game and the outcome is to win. the outcome of a business isnt to win just to be successful. i would think owners would do what is right if there goal is to win.
    **********************************************

assuming that attitudes change for the better and will continue to do things
they are very slow to catch up in some instances

but I’m not sure attitudes are always changing to end discrimination
I don’t really see it as a dying way to think
I think discrimination is here to stay and if there are no efforts to stop it – it will always rear its head
But I am a cynic on almost every topic and racism is no exception
So I’m sure most people will disagree with that idea
frankly I think we are a more racist society now than we were 10 years ago

But when it comes to hiring people more importantly I think people engage in acts that lead to disparities without even intending to do it
I think its just the way people interact with one another
and there is no malicious intent but it leads to an uneven playing field sometimes
I don’t even like to use the word racists to describe it

an NFL owner comes from a different background than most of us as well
they are usually older and not exactly middle class
which makes them a little less fluid in terms of cultural norms that become mainstream
so sometimes prejudice rears its head where it would not to most people

I agree with your business model point. I think owners see green when it comes down to it. But its the perception of who will bring them that green that matters and that perception has not traditionally lead to a great deal of minority hirings.

fighting that perception is kind of the difference between an outreach program and an interview quota or a quota to hire some one. It forces a person to sit with some one they would have dismissed before they really knew them – and maybe it changes their mind about their initial instinct – which may have not been racism, but not exactly head coach material…

Piggy, discrimination, racism and bigotry is a world issue and not exclusive to America.

I just saw a piece on Real Sports where a very good black soccer player gets bananas thrown at him and monkey chants all over the world. Then they interview this English soccer guy and he outright says black players born and raised in England or not should not be on English teams because they’re really not English.

    Chargers fired OC Frank Reich.
We would’ve guessed DC John Pagano as the first to go. Instead, it’s Reich, who coordinated the NFL’s No. 9 offense in total yards but No. 26 offense in points scored. Reich, of course, deserves another chance because his offensive talent was decimated by injury, and still looked like one of the league’s most-prolific units in the first half of the season. Coach Mike McCoy may take back a prominent offensive role with his revised staff.

Our cap situation isnt that bad. We carried over over 5mil from last year, so the 5mil over we are currently means we pretty much are dead even. We also have Coples on our team accounting for 7mil, due to his extension, and we are sure to cut or renegotiate with him at a much lower number given he was waiver wire pickup. If we negtiate it down to 2mil, we have enough o pay our rookie class. Everything after that is a give for a take. Cut Grimes, get a top OG. Cut Wake and Jennings, get another OG and an top FA ILB. There is room for us to make significant moves in FA, we will just have to trim the fat.

Hargreaves is and will be the top of my big board. Im that convinced about the need in our secondary despite who comes in as DC. We will need to draft a ILB somewhere, im thinking round 3ish and we i think can find a real gem there, lots of good ILBs this year, but i also want us to get a ILB in FA. OLB’s are also pretty plentiful in this coming draft, along with DE’s and OT’s. OG’s im holding off on until i can see what kinda offense we will run but if we more to more run based or at least a more man blocking scheme, there are some stud road graters out there.

For D (sorry for the lag):

“First i would say to keep a rule like the Rooney rule in place does keep racism alive, i think it continues to predicate the notion that we cant act as human beings and treat each other fairly, that we have to have rules do it for us. To me there will never be a belief that we consider each equal, just that we follow the rules.”

I think that’s exactly the point of rules. If people could be trusted to do what’s right they wouldn’t be needed. That IS humanity, acting like human beings includes doing things that in a civilized society is not approved of.

I don’t believe racism can be eliminated, merely overcome. Racism IS being human. Overcoming it IS being evolved and being connected with other human beings. I think it’s virtually inarguable that Bowles got his job because of the Rooney rule, so there’s your example.

Lastly, you started a sentence with “paint me however you like” and I want to be extremely clear, I didn’t paint you with any brush, I merely responded to your post in a civilized way about a topic that’s very important to our ability to succeed as a society. I hold you in high regard, and would never seek to pigeonhole your opinions. I propose this to you and will strive for it myself: Steer clear of feelings of defensiveness. Know that everything we say to each other is said with respect and is intended to illuminate and communicate rather than denigrate, and lets keep talking straight about this topic (if you like). It’s important.

I agree man, sorry to get snippy.

I just think its horrible that rules must govern what a truly compassionate heart already dictates. I think maybe i have a stronger belief in the world we live in and that i feel we are much more evolved than i think you do.

I see things like the Rooney rule nothing but archaic references to a past we should be walking away from not trying hard to remember when it isnt necessary. I have no problem with its existence i just think its detrimental to the evolution of the world.

I promise you Todd Bowles didnt get his job because of the Rooney rule, he got it because he was an awesome candidate. To me its a bigger win that Bowles can earn it, get it and succeed in the face of prejudice, and the Rooney rule i feel somewhat takes away from it. Rooney rule opens up things to saying, yeah ya got your shot because the NFL made sure we had to interview you, or that we interviewed you BECAUSE you are black and we have to interview at least one. Honestly it seems more “white man” keeping the “black man” from fully being able to appreciate his own accomplishments that way, and i think it has an overall negative social impact.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I think we disagree on both your 2nd and 3rd paragraphs. I simply do not believe that “walking away” and “trying hard not to remember” is the right course of action. As humans I think without the rules some behaviors, including racist ones will simply become more prevalent, not less.

I also consider it almost inarguable that Todd Bowle’s job didn’t result from the Rooney rule. You can’t possibly deliver on that promise, and Todd Bowles himself attributes his opportunity to the rule.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Actually I want to recant that last statement. He didn’t get the job because of the rule, he got the job because, as you say, he was the best candidate…but he himself acknowledges the rule was instrumental to him getting the OPPORTUNITY to interview for the job, and without the interview, there is no chance to win the job.

That’s further evidence the rule is working. It’s about getting the best candidates for the job an opportunity to interview, even if earlier paradigms would have precluded such opportunity.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

also, sorry for the misquote. For the record, D said, “Not trying hard to remember”, not what I quoted above. Apologies D.

    Jahn,
Dungy was a coach before the Rooney rule and he got interviews beforehand.
    ————-
    SB7MVP:

I dont’ want to get bogged down in details, but because of his lack of ability to get interviews for so very long, Dungy is one of the foremost proponents of the Rooney Rule. I never said he got his job because of it, I merely said the lack of it is one of the reasons it took so long for him to actually get a job.

Again, these are details that detract from my overall point: The Rooney rule has been good for racial equality in the sport, and in turn, because it has revealed candidates who otherwise would not have had the opportunity (Bowles), it’s been good for the sport as a whole.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Thank you for allowing me a chance to clarify though, I don’t want anyone to think I’m misrepresenting the facts.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think it reveals anything like Bowles.Ii think Bowles through hard work and continued growth from position coach to coord to interm HC has revealed it. I think Crennel, and Smith, etc etc have all done this with 0 help from the Rooney rule. I think these guys rose to the top just like any of their white counterparts and to me that shows racial equality. I dont think the rule provided it, because it doesnt get them the job it just forces them to be put infront of a guy who can then make whatever decision he wants to. If he wanted to refuse him because he’s black he can still do it, so i just dont understand how the Rooney rule helped anything.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

Would you propose that the change from 6% minority coaches to 22% minority coaches since the inception of the rule is merely evidence of a coincidental enlightenment in the ranks of NFL ownership when it comes to extending minority opportunites?

I think that’s a highly unlikely possibility, but a possibility nonetheless.

Are posts like these, that we see often, supposed to be funny or sarcastic or what?

The process starts with over a 100 guys, they’re just trying to take a look at people, if this was never done guys like Grimes wouldn’t be in the NFL. Take any roster in the NFL and look at where these guys went to college and it’s all over the lot, sure our roster has 80% of guys from big schools, but that means 10 or so guys came from small schools, and how do you think they found them? By giving them a chance.

  67. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If I’m not mistaken, Mike Tomlin was our Rooney Rule interview in 2007.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

He definitely got interviews because of the rule, although technically he got the Pittsburgh job AFTER the team had already satisfied the rule by interviewing Rivera.

Ironically people like to point out he did not get his job because of the rule, but yet he did get his job from the open minded individual who actually created the rule in the NFL: Art Rooney.

I think the ironic part is that Rooney was always a champion of minority candidates and saw that most NFL owners were not, so him interviewing a minority didn’t require a rule….but getting others to do it would.

That’s the crux here. If we scuttle the rule because we’re beyond that, we’re saying Rooney was wrong, or that race relations in the NFL have improved light years since 2003. I’m not sure the latter is all that believable…but that’s my own judgment on the situation.

  68. D's avatar D says:

I guess we have to walk away from it then Jahn. I really do not see it your way and you really dont see it mine. Either way i see 0 positive or negative effect from the Rooney rule. Im fine with it staying i just think its lousy to think we still have to rely on it to handle yourself appropriately and i really think it steals a little bit of accomplishment. its sad to me to hear you say Bowles attributes something he has accomplished on his own to the Rooney rule, thats actually very very sad. Man deserves to know he earned it without that rule.

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

I don’t know, animosity from some fans is a negative, some folks like Bowles who attribute their job opportunities to the rule will see it as a positive.

I too wish we didn’t have to rely on it, but I just don’t have as much faith in humanity to reverse its course on this topic after thousands of years of history to the contrary.

Bowles earned it REGARDLESS of the rule. He’d say that himself. But he got the OPPORUTNITY to interview because of it, and that, IMHO, is a great great thing to ensure guys like him get those opportunities.

Either way, cheers to ya. Nothing but respect.

    jahn,

this is why i think there is some hope that one day things like the rooney rule wont exist. i think as generation and generation go on. race will stop being an issue. i went to segregated grade schools. our parents drank from different water fountains. each generation proves to be more tolerable. i do hope at some point in time i am right and people are judging each other by who they are and their actions and not their race or where they come from. it is the only way we wont all end up killing ourselves in some fashion

I think you can attribute a lot of things. Shifts in society, old white men racist owners dying off lol, success of other black coaches before them. I think the rule might have been a kicking off point, but it certainly has been the efforts of those who have made it on their own efforts that accomplished the most.

i dont know if coincidental or not. but look at football as a whole. how was that 72 dolphin team. i am willing to bet it was more then 50% white. now look at the nfl and the nba as a whole. it is mostly black players. i never saw some rule for having to have black players. teams just started picking the best players available. i get a lot of that is cause of more rules that gave opportunities for minorities to go to school. but we are talking just the rooney rule. i am just not sure in this day and age it is needed. i think any owner is going to interview the best person for the job.

i am not against the rule, i dont have any issue with it, i am just saying as a society i think we have progressed a lot when it come to race issues

    • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

It would have to be 1 of 2 things:
      1) coincidental
      2) a result of the rule

The ’72 Dolphins isn’t a very good example IMHO because in those days we had far fewer than 6% of the coaches who were minorities, and even if the league was 50% white, that disparity is shocking.

    I guess I’m saying this:
    Coughlin? Sure.
    Gase? Why not?
Marrone? Won 9 games the year he left Buffalo and beat us…sure.
Mora? I actually would prefer NOT him…

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Well exactly. As Jahn mentioned he didn’t know what coach is good, where to start, etc etc. Frankly none of us really do that much.
But this is where it’s so key for the GM, owner, & Tbomb to have a vision ahead of what they think is a winning football strategy, scheme, systems, play calling situations, and types of personnel already here that fit and how much personnel turnover needed to make a go.

They have to know what they’re looking for & the right questions to ask and the right vetting process, or else it’s still the merry go round.

Hope they get it right and get a guy that has a matched vision that can whip this team into contention in short order. There’s plenty of talent here in certain others & void in some as well.

Hire the HC that best fits with the nucleus of the best talent here & the one that can still work with the ones that needs more direction while he gets his cupboards restocked by Grier, got to be on the same page as him too!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what it’s all about. Everyone sitting down with the HC candidates and going through what they think the team lacks and how to correct it. I saw physical flaws all season and if you listened to what Grier said about what kind of talent he looks for, he said you can look to the people who I learned under to get an idea.

Cue the 3 yards and a cloud of dust comments that will come with any mention of Parcells which is totally inaccurate and absurd but that won’t stop anyone from saying it. LOL

What I liked what Grier said is you have to be able to adapt to what wins in this league.

You want to be physical but fast too, everyone likes speed but you don’t want to get pushed around either.
