Tom Coughlin

Tom Coughlin for President?

Hue Jackson

Hue Jackson – Right on brother!

Sean Payton for a 2nd RD pick? Mike Shanahan? Adam Gase? Tom Coughlin? Dan Campbell? Bill Belichick for Suh, Landry, Parker and Tannehill? Hue Jackson? Mike Shula? Teryl Austin? Mike Smith?

Who will be the next head Coach of the Miami Dolphins?

Out of all the options above, and there are sure to be other options in the near future, I actually have 2 favorites from that bunch.

If we’re going with the short term stopgap, and a HC who will give us respectability immediately, and as part of the package, grooms our next HC in Dan Campbell, I’m all for Tom Coughlin. Coughlin is a well respected HC and person in the NFL. Once a fierce disciplinarian type coach, being a military man, Coughlin was a no nonsense man. As HC of the NYG, he felt like he was losing his team, and changed his approach to a more friendlier relationship with his players, and the team responded and went to the Super Bowl and won. Is 70 years old too old? I say hell no! I’ve seen great managers in baseball like Jim Leyland, Jack McKeon succeed in their 70’s, and heck, Ronald Reagan was 70 when he was elected President, and he did a fantastic job running our country.

I like Dan Campbell, but I just don’t think he’s ready to run a team yet. Too many things he’s deficient in, but what a truly great guy to learn from Tom Coughlin would be. A true professional, a winner. Of course, nothing has been documented that Coughlin and or Cambell would agree to this set up, but it seems legitimate to me, and I like it.

If we’re looking for a long term (hopefully), I like Hue Jackson. (I would like Mike Shula too, but as so far, he hasn’t been mentioned as a coach we’re interested in) Jackson wasn’t given a fair shot with the Raiders, he went 8-8, and was fired. Incidentally, Hue’s OC in OAK was Al Saunders, the guy we brought in to “help” our offense after Philbin was fired. Jackson has done good things as OC for the Bengals. Dalton is playing his best football of his career this year, and most believe that is credit due to Hue Jackson. Bengals fans are actually crying for Dalton to play in the playoffs when they clearly all know Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs.

  • Friday January 8th Update! *

Yesterday, the Dolphins interviewed Bears Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase.  Supposedly it was a long, thorough interview.  That means this week, the Dolphins have interviewed Mike Shanahan, Mike Smith, Teryl Austin and Anthony Lynn.  Dan Campbell will make his case today, and Doug Marrone and Hue Jackson will follow this weekend.

  8. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    tim will like this.

Per Rapoport, the Dolphins have real interest in ex-Falcons coach Mike Smith, who interviewed for the position on Monday. Miami team executives are performing background work with former coaches and players.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t want to be tied at the hip with Smith as if he’s my pick or only option, I just feel he’s one of the more proven coaches available who has had some success.

I’m worried that the Browns might steal Terry Collins and name him as their HC.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Peyton took his team to the playoffs 5 of 9 seasons, and is 6-4 in the playoffs, along with 1 Super Bowl win. Not too shabby, but he’s also 7-9 the last 2 seasons. He’s never been worse than 7-9 as HC, but with Drew Brees as QB, you shouldn’t be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you don’t have the personnel it’s hard to win no matter who you are, even with the QB. Look at the Pats, they’ve lost 4 of their last 6 down the stretch because they’re banged up and don’t have the same personnel they started off 10-0 with.

  12. D's avatar D says:

Im with you on most of this Mike. I do think Coughlin would make a solid stop gap coach, but the idea isnt to get a stop gap guy IMO. Coaching transitions are always pretty difficult, so why get someone to get us on our feet again just to pull the rug out in a few years. I dont think you will find a coach, outside of a slim possibility of Sean Payton, that would retain Campbell as an OC, which would make the most sens for him as he is climbing the coaching ladder. I agree that as a position coach, its a LOT likelier that another HC would keep him, but what service does this do for Campbell.

It sounds very unfortunate to me but i see the likelihood of retaining him to be very slim, unless he is forced on whomever takes over as HC. I dont like that scenario because if you want a coach to come in and have the best opportunity for success, you let them assemble their team.

A second possibility is if we go for a guy with little HC experience and possibly no set in stone OC in mind, that that person might go with Campbell for the obvious reasons of familiarity with the team. I think this is also a stretch but im trying to hold out hope, especially for those who really want him to stay on the team.

I prefer going the route of Hue Jackson, he just seems to be the right guy at the right time this year. That is of course subject to change IF some dark horse candidate steps out of the shadows, but right now i think i have him as the best candidate.

I also lean a little towards Mike Smith if we go the route of experience HC, as he has commitments to fundamental football, but yet has shown he can modernize his game plan to be successful in the current NFL. He also focuses, has been a position coach and former player at a position we REALLY need to get stronger at, LB. He was at least partially responsible for the development of Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper, Adalius Thomas, and more notably Ray Lewis. I think we could see a really strong leap forward with Jenkins under Mike Smith, maybe even Misi, and i would bet one of the first moves by this team after hiring him as coach would be get a strong MLB. His defenses also utilize DT talent properly, which i definitely would like to see us get the most out of a very talent group of guys.

  13. D's avatar D says:

For us to give up a pick teams would have to be completely smitten by Payton or have very little player needs to give up the pick. Like you said, its not likely that the asking price stays that high and as time goes on, the price will drop until someone bites. Me personally i see equivalently talented coaches available, making the pick more valuable to us at the moment.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

To add to the stopgap, and getting a franchise on their feet and pulling the rug – I think if they have Tom Coughlin as HC, with Campbell as an Asst HC, learning and participating in ALL things coaching, the idea would be that when Campbell is ready to take over, it should be a smooth transition from Coughlin to Campbell, as Campbell will just be taking over, with some different ideas possibly, but in general, having learned from Coughlin, a similar overall philosophy.

I don’t quite understand the thinking behind trying to keep Campbell. Is he that great an asset that we need to figure out how to keep him on staff? Most fans didn’t even know who he was before he was made interim HC. I doubt they are giving him serious consideration, regardless of what they say.
    ***
I have nothing against the guy, but I just don’t think his resume warrants a HC job. That doesn’t mean he couldn’t be a good HC someday, but do we have to be the team that goes through his growing pains to get there? Just my opinion.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Good point Randy. I think a little of what has happened with a previous interim HC (Bowles) has colored a bit of the thinking. Normally, you don’t just hire a guy with no coordinator exp, little coaching exp, and little proof of the right connections to get the right people.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

bowles learned a lot from bruce arians in arizona.

      • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yep and he got that much needed Dc experience in both Arizona and Philly. He was also an assistant HC here. Lots more experience coaching than Campbell has.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I don’t get it either. What exactly did campbell do the last 13 weeks that warrants him getting the job full time? The offense didn’t get better. The defense didn’t get better. We had way more penalties than last year. We beat ourselves a lot more.

A player coach is not always good. Discipline usually goes out the door with those coaches. Look at rex ryan coached teams. They’re always leading the league in penalties.

That’s cool. I don’t think folks are just idiotic for considering keeping Campbell or anything. I just don’t see “Head coach candidate” when I look at his accomplishments. That’s fine if others do….or feel he’s shown potential. Part of it for me, is that I’m just more in the mode of getting an experienced HC. I’m done with bringing in guys who have never done it before.

  29. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    randy,

i didnt mean that either. i dont think folks are being idiotic, far from it. maybe a bit idealistic. hoping a man with no HC experience can save the day or even learn on the job and become the next shula or something.

as far as who they get to coach i am 100% confident that in 3 years half here will be calling for his head and the other half saying we need to be more patient and stop constantly changing coaches.

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Randy

it seems clear to me that the someone in the organization feels Campbell has potential. There’s something to it when a guy has a presence, and people respond well to him. I know he’s not ready to be the guy yet, i don’t think I could have made that any clearer, but he might be the type of guy who can learn from a pro’s pro like Coughlin by following him around and learning the daily grind, and then 3 years from now, be ready to take the reins. I don’t think I’m evaluating him by what our record was with him, I think he was clearly in over his head this season, but there are obviously intangibles that make them want to keep him with the team.

WHY MIAMI NEEDS TO HIRE TOM COUGHLIN
    By ZONK Posted January 5, 2016 In Larry’s Blog 5 0

COUGHLIN STEPS DOWN. WILL MIAMI RECOGNIZE THIS GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY?

I was somewhat saddened by the news of head coach, Tom Coughlin, stepping down from the NY Giants. Then, for a brief moment, I was excited at the possibility of Tom becoming the Dolphins head coach!

But then reality set in. Coughlin, like Shula, Belichick and other experienced, successful head coaches, would not consider coming to an NFL team without having complete control of Football Operations. That is to say, having life and death control over their respective players. Without that, there is little or no discipline. Teams like Miami, Cleveland and several others are not, it seems, willing to grant their head coaches that power. And without it, the head coach does not get the respect he needs or deserves, in most cases.

I’m sure some eager offensive or defensive coordinator will jump at the chance to become a head coach in Miami. But the time it takes to put together a winning combination would take too long and could be problematic with so many people involved.

On the other hand, an EXPERIENCED head coach, such as Coughlin, who has done it before and is current with personnel and what’s happening in the League, could and would make it happen much sooner!

I’m sure the Dolphins will soon have a head coach. My hope is we won’t be going through this AGAIN in 2 or 3 years!

    Anyone listening?

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think anyone here really knows how qualified Campbell is with the situation he was put in. He had no chance to put together his own staff, philosophy or team together from day one. He took over what it was and it wasn’t good.

Agreed. He might have that IT factor that many coaches don’t. Who knows until he’s had a full offseason & a compliment of coaching staff that he agrees upon.

Boulder, Campbell not doing anything as you say in your opinion is even more an indictment on the systems installed on offense & defense…IMO.
That;s why both coordinators were let go. He could only tweak it some midstream with green replacements @ coordinators. We saw some good results didn’t we?

Campbell also said he was going to let his coordinators call the plays, showed some confidence in them with lil override.

Campbell is a respected X & O’s guy. True he hasn’t been a coordinator, but he knows the game & he’d want a competent coordinator on both sides of the ball calling plays for his team, as any HC should.
This leaves the HC to concentrate more on other areas that get overlooked…IMO.

Now, I’m posting this as a ongoing discussion. I’m not saying Campbell must be the next HC. He might be ready, or you may be right & he’s not quite there yet.

But either way, whoever is the next HC, they need to have very good coordinators that are on the same page with them.
Look at Coughlin’s defense this year. Spagnuolo didn’t seem to work well with his side of the ball.

    Just my random thoughts.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Austin been to 3 super bowls as a coach (DB coach for Seattle in 06; DB coach for Zona in 09; DB coach for Ravens in 11).
He had a DC stint with the Florida Gators during Urban Meyer’s last season there prior to being one with Detroit the last 2 seasons.

  53. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I doubt very much NO give up Sean Payton for a pick or fires him this season. Unless they already have someone lined up as a replacement they would be shooting themselves in the foot. Let’s say they do not want to keep him on. They will have to wait until all the trade stuff goes through and Payton agrees to join the new team and comes to a contract agreement in principle.

UNLESS they have someone on the hook waiting this would put them behind the 8 ball because if they can’t trade him and wind up having to release him from his contract (fire him) they will have missed out on the other candidates by then…..

    —————————————
Wouldnt stop the trade. Only thing that would stop the trade would be a no trade clause in his contract. He also likely has contract termination clauses which means those would transfer as well. I would assume a team in hopes of protecting their ivestments have both buy out language for the case that he leaves to coach another team, which the receiving team would be responsible for, potentially some buy out language with him being personally responsible for some of it. They also have retirement clauses that if he decided to retire prior to the endo of the contract a certain amount may be have to be paid back to the team. If this is true it might prevent him from going that option, or at least severely deter him from doing it. It would potentially affect the trade if he announced it to the team making the trade, but again, i wouldn’t doubt that there would be financial repercussions for that action as well. This is a business after all, legally i bet they have most those avenues covered.

If Payton told the Saints he doesn’t want to coach another team and they traded him anyway it would be douchey to begin with and no team is going to trade for him to begin with without interviewing him or him saying he’s interested. So my reply was to what Boulder said. It wouldn’t happen without him being on board. It’s not like trading a player.

    Interesting stat from beasley

“Since 2012, coaches hired in the first week of a team’s search have had more success than those who took longer to land a job. They have won 53 percent of their games, and 60 percent went on to make the playoffs in their first two years.”

    Read more here: http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nfl/miami-dolphins/article53328885.html#storylink=cpy
    ————————————–
Think about it this way, teams if they are smart interview their top guys first, unless of course they are restricted from interviewing a guy who is involved in the playoffs. So the first week SHOULD be the top guys on your list, and hiring them within the first week means they likely had a lot of suitors, so really those hired in the first week are in multiple teams top 5. Those guys should pan out, multiple team research staff’s all coming to the same conclusion about them.

I was actually surprised to hear that Grier has been with the team for so many years! I had always assumed that when a new GM came in (we have has so many) that they always brought their own scouting department, etc. I guess that is not the case and the new GM’s utilize the existing scouting departments often. (often enough that Grier has been here through 5 – 6 GM’s! )

    —-

A few things about Grier’s family.

Grier’s father, Bobby, was with the Patriots organization from 1981 – 1999 having served 3 years as a scout, 8 years as positional coach, and 7 years in the front office as a personnel guy. He was director of player personnel in the mid 90s under Parcells staff and stayed on in that capacity through the Pete Carroll years until fired in favor of Scott Pioli.

**And whether it played a role or not, according to ESPN’s documentary “The Brady 6”, Bobby Grier was the only NFL exec to have contacted Michigan Coach Lloyd Carr about Tom Brady prior to the draft (Grier was let go 2 weeks later LOL).

Bobby then took a job with the Texans as director of pro scouting as soon as the franchise was formed and has been there ever since and is now just a senior advisor after leaving his director of player personnel post in 2011.

Grier’s brother is former NHL player Mike Grier.

    **
    http://espn.go.com/blog/afceast/post/_/id/27833/one-nfl-exec-called-michigan-about-brady

The last few sentences in the link above are funny. Mike says he grew up a Pats fan (his brother probably did too given they grew up in that area due to the father’s job there) but that he can’t root for them anymore given that his brother is with the Fins LOL.

The Eagles will interview Giants OC Ben McAdoo for their head-coaching vacancy on Thursday.
McAdoo is also in the running to replace Tom Coughlin with the Giants. Eli Manning badly wants McAdoo to stay in New York, but the Giants are going through the interview process with multiple candidates. McAdoo interviewed for the gig on Tuesday. The Giants finished 10th and eighth in total offense in McAdoo’s two seasons on the job. It’s a high-paced scheme.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Good point. It wasn’t McAdoo’s fault the Giants D ate a big fat one all the time.
The only annoying part of McAdoo’s offense this season was the reliance on a RB by committee approach.

    • D's avatar D says:

If he comes here he HAS to rid him self of that disgusting porn stache. He was a potential candidate for us at OC when we got Lazor. I dont know i want him as a HC but id take him as an OC once they clear out Coughlins coaching staff.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

McAdoo has been talked about for weeks in Ginats country. The believe here is McAdoo will become the HC, retain Spagnola as the HC then hire an offensive asst. because he calls the plays.

      • D's avatar D says:

Probably a win win for us. If they go a different direction as far as a HC, the McAdoo will likely get flushed with the rest of Coughlins staff, we could get him at his previous position as OC. If the Giants retain him as HC, then thats one less competitor for other coaching candidates.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

He comes from the McCarthy tree and unlike Philbin (McAdoo was a QB coach in GB his last two years there), he got a chance to call games as an OC with the Giants the last two season lol.

Was looking over the season record & the Phins ultimately played 4 games against teams now officially in the playoffs.
We went 3-1 against those teams. Wash, Hou, & NE.
ManCampbell was responsible for 2 of those wins & 1 loss.

Now if we could just beat the other non-playoff teams…lol

Phins seem to always play up & definitely DOWN to their competition.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Walker had an article about going 3-1 against playoff teams. Let’s see we beat Wash in the opener when they sucked and we were worse, be beat Hou. when they sucked and we had all the fire of a new coach, and we beat the Cheats in a game they didn’t seem to care to win (running the ball on 16 of 18 plays), and we got crushed by the Cheats when we were playing our best ball of the yr.

My take is 3-1 looks good only because the jets and bills didn’t make the playoffs.

Tannehill hasn’t done anything yet in his career to show he can be a franchise QB. He’s got the skill set, but as evidenced recently by the ending of the Colts game he sucks when we need him to do something to win a game for us, whether we have the lead or trail by one score.
