Sean Payton for a 2nd RD pick? Mike Shanahan? Adam Gase? Tom Coughlin? Dan Campbell? Bill Belichick for Suh, Landry, Parker and Tannehill? Hue Jackson? Mike Shula? Teryl Austin? Mike Smith?
Who will be the next head Coach of the Miami Dolphins?
Out of all the options above, and there are sure to be other options in the near future, I actually have 2 favorites from that bunch.
If we’re going with the short term stopgap, and a HC who will give us respectability immediately, and as part of the package, grooms our next HC in Dan Campbell, I’m all for Tom Coughlin. Coughlin is a well respected HC and person in the NFL. Once a fierce disciplinarian type coach, being a military man, Coughlin was a no nonsense man. As HC of the NYG, he felt like he was losing his team, and changed his approach to a more friendlier relationship with his players, and the team responded and went to the Super Bowl and won. Is 70 years old too old? I say hell no! I’ve seen great managers in baseball like Jim Leyland, Jack McKeon succeed in their 70’s, and heck, Ronald Reagan was 70 when he was elected President, and he did a fantastic job running our country.
I like Dan Campbell, but I just don’t think he’s ready to run a team yet. Too many things he’s deficient in, but what a truly great guy to learn from Tom Coughlin would be. A true professional, a winner. Of course, nothing has been documented that Coughlin and or Cambell would agree to this set up, but it seems legitimate to me, and I like it.
If we’re looking for a long term (hopefully), I like Hue Jackson. (I would like Mike Shula too, but as so far, he hasn’t been mentioned as a coach we’re interested in) Jackson wasn’t given a fair shot with the Raiders, he went 8-8, and was fired. Incidentally, Hue’s OC in OAK was Al Saunders, the guy we brought in to “help” our offense after Philbin was fired. Jackson has done good things as OC for the Bengals. Dalton is playing his best football of his career this year, and most believe that is credit due to Hue Jackson. Bengals fans are actually crying for Dalton to play in the playoffs when they clearly all know Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs.
- Friday January 8th Update! *
Yesterday, the Dolphins interviewed Bears Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase. Supposedly it was a long, thorough interview. That means this week, the Dolphins have interviewed Mike Shanahan, Mike Smith, Teryl Austin and Anthony Lynn. Dan Campbell will make his case today, and Doug Marrone and Hue Jackson will follow this weekend.

wow, if only the fins can have a qb like wilson. amazing how he even made the kicker miss
Seattle goes to Camolina

Out of who is left id like to see either Carolina or KC win it all.
In the NFC I like Carolina but the Cards are fun to watch too I wouldn’t mind them winning
I hope KC goes to NE and beats the shit out of them. Patsie oline should have a real tough time with KC.
I think KC has a very good shot at knocking the Pats off. Probly best chance on any AFC survivor
That would go for anyone playing them!
Son i like cards too. I usually opt for ” Never won before ” teams.
i would rather see the panthers but i can see Seattle upsetting them
Would not surprise me either. Wife hates the Hawks i kinda liked them back to the old afc west days.
ffr,
Wilson had some big plays today. He has more in one game than Tannehill has all year. Lol
Slightly different results on missed snaps lol
Oh brother! LOL
sb7
Point taken, but I think that’s two different questions. Let’s hope Gase is the real deal.
My thoughts on the Mando is that it is a lot of speculation but the part about him trying to isolate Tannehill from Marino rings true to me. Philbin was kind of a control freak who wants to control the message just like on HK when the players committee was formed and all those guys were gone within a season

randy
i know. i said so. that play stripping peterson was great, but making the kicker miss was his best play of the game.
toba
I was gonna say Tannehill would have kicked that bad snap back into the end zone for a safety, but I thought I’d be nice. Lol
Very nice if you not to remind us all 😎

i hate their carroll but all i really care about is someone beating the cheats. after that i dont care who wins the sb
I quite hating on him when he left Pats/ Jets No real feeling toward him anymore . Probably cause i don’t follow college though

I wonder if Aaron Rodgers knew what a horrible judge of QBs Philbin was.
Reply
Not sure, but Tannehill did throw for more yards this season than Rodgers. 😉
I’d like to see old Carson Palmer get a ring before he retires.
Fitz as well.
gdp
Yeah, and Rodgers also threw for 7 more TDs and 4 fewer INTs too….you know….meaningful stats. Lol
Oh and made the playoffs too
Better overall team.
And coaching 😎
Go Cousins!
I still hate Redskins from Superbowl victory over Fins.

Except personnel development isn’t really the head coaches job. That’s what position coaches do.
___________________
Yeah, except the Head Coach chooses those position coaches, ALL of them. Philbin sucked. Never liked him, but why we didn’t fire him at the end of last season is now a huge mystery. C’mon Randy, it doesn’t jibe that you have a HC who doesn’t like the QB, and management who then gives that QB a big contract. Makes no sense on any level. Someone had to go if that were the case, and despite what anyone thinks, Tannehill was on the rise, while Philbin was floundering all along.
LMAO – If the Packers were in the AFC East, they probably be 7-9.
Randy – Did Philbin draft Aaron Rodgers, or was he just part of the team, an OC (in title only) since McCarthy wrote the playbook and called the plays? How does Philbin get credit for Aaron Rodgers now?
lol at the House of Cards theme music….I miss that show. when do they drop some new episodes? Does anyone here know?
Herd. Apparently March 4th.
Son Cousins has looked good this year i give ya that. And even if GBay wins i will mot be cheering fir them next week
I think the reason Philbin wanted to keep Sherman around is because he’s the one who likely lobbied for drafting Tannehill in the first place. After he was gone, Philbin didn’t know what to do with him. And of the QBs we had, I remember Philbin really liked Pat Devlin.
MikeE,
I get that folks didn’t like Philbin. He had his shot, and he couldn’t make it happen. But, I think blaming him for all the stuff that went down with this team over the past few years is very myopic. Players develop or don’t for many reasons. But, it is what it is. I am not gonna try to defend the guy. The HC bears the brunt of the responsibility and that’s just the way it is.
***
Also, HCs and FOs don’t always agree on personnel. That’s nothing new in the NFL. They’re still supposed to make it work. I think it points more towards the stupid hierarchy/system Ross was trying to use…and that it always seemed like nobody was really in charge.
I’m basing what I’m saying now off that article. If that article is correct, and of course, I have no idea if it is, and we’ll likely never know, but that’s true dysfunction when the HC doesn’t like/doesn’t support his QB, while management rewards that QB with a big contact. None of that makes any sense to me. If I felt that the HC wasn’t supporting a guy I just gave a hefty contract, I’d make sure he was out.
MikeE,
That wasn’t my point with the Rodgers/Philbin comment. My point was not to give him credit for Rodgers but to wonder why Rodgers would so highly recommend and have such a glowi opinion of a guy(Philbin) who didn’t know what a good QB looks like. eh should we trust when it comes to evaluating a QB. Philbin or Ireland and Ross? Lol
***
It was actually a snide rip on Tannehill! Lol
LOL – I gotcha

pffffftttt. shows what you know about football. look at that great game wilson played today proof right there you dont need a team but just a qb to make it to the playoffs and win in them,
matter of fact i read an article the panthers are thinking about saving money and helping the environment and only dressing newton next week. that way they wont have as many uniforms to wash
Herd
I believe that Philbin “didn’t know what to do with him”. Our shitty offensive scheme and design made that very clear. I actually believe Philbin didn’t know what to do with just about every aspect of our team.
Mike E, all of what you’re getting frustrated about doesn’t matter anymore.
Ross is the owner, Tannenbaum is his right hand man to oversee the football team, Grier runs the personnel dept. and will work with Gase hand in hand, and Gase will be in Tannehill’s ear all the time.
Gase needs to find a DC he believes in to run that part of the team with his specialty being on offense. He will have to oversee the defense too, but as an OC who develops game plans and calls plays against the live action opponent, he knows what defenses do. So he probably knows what is difficult to move the ball against and what you need on defense to succeed.
I’m interested to see what kind of overall coach Gase is. I’ve mentioned similar scenarios with McCarthy (42)/Rodgers, Payton (42)/Brees as young HC/QB relationships. Another is Gruden/Cousins. Gruden was 47 when he got the job last year. All of these first time HCs had only a few years as OCs and Gase has as much or more experience than them much younger at 37. Like he says, he’s been doing this for more than half his life. Learned under Saban, Martz, Fox and Peyton. Saban and Fox are defensive coaches so as an asst. coach you learn football, not just one specific thing or side of the ball.
Maybe he’s the next big coach. Who knows?
Go Gase/Grier!!!
You’re right, it doesn’t matter going forward, except that it wouldn’t give me any confidence that these clowns can do anything right, but more than anything, if those things are true, it was a total waste of an entire season, which really bugs me.
This season sucked. Throw it out and hope the new direction has it right. It’s going to be totally different people running the show and the team will reflect that. Until we see games, all we can do is focus on Gase’s staff, FA and the draft and get excited about potential.
Man I hope we re-sign Miller. I think Albert, Pouncey, James, Tannehill, Miller/Ajayi, Landry and Parker have the makings of an explosive offense. We have to get better at guard, upgrade depth at tackle and add more impact defensive players. It’s not insurmountable to become a playoff team next season.
I think the best phase of our team this year was STs. We were pretty solid to really good all around. Rizzi may keep his job.
‘But, I think blaming him for all the stuff that went down with this team over the past few years is very myopic.’
but it is ok to blame the qb
It’s like I’m watching the Dolphins….lol
How did
TannehillRodgers show absolutely no pocket awareness on that safety??? lolRandy, does that Packers OL remind you of another OL? 😉
gdp
Yeah, actually about a dozen or so OLs….some of them in the playoffs. Lol
Tannehill was Fed Ex Air player of the week for the second time, same as Brees and Wilson, one more than Brady and Rodgers and Eli and Mariotta and Winston and one less than Rivers and Roethlisberger.
Give the man credit for that.
Amen brotha!
It could be a nice combo that puts Miami on a run for years to come. Wouldn’t that be nice.
– Don’t you know it?! That has been my dream for the last 20 years, every 3 or 4 years…..I guess I am finally jaded.
I bet Gase & Tanny get to work soon, likely in private. Neither have children yet.
Unfortunately they cannot. It is forbidden by the CBA.
That’s why it’s in private….Sshh
tim
what keeps frustrating mike e isnt the philbin/tanny issue, it is you keep saying grier and gase are going to work hand in hand.
Rodgers has won a SB and an MVP so he’s allowed to struggle with no support. LOL
1 for 6 so far today. 😉
….and he allowed a sack safety….lol
Oh know, only QB geeks with no pocket presence do things like that. LOL
Just for the record, Rodgers has been my FF QB since 2008 so I’ve kept tabs on him. He plays much better when he has protection, receivers make plays and they run the ball well. Just saying! LOL
Stories out there about Manning and Gase texting each other at all hours of the day and night about ideas for plays or wrinkles or whatever. Manning loving having passing game chats with another offense nerd.
That’s the work ethic thing. Gase loves what he does and he’s active in it as a new HC calling offensive plays. That right there is different than Philbin. They are nothing alike in look or personality so I I really don’t get the convenient mocking approach.
naples
I liked Gase’ excitement for the game. When he started talking about why he wanted to keep calling plays, you could just see that he loves football and the competitive nature of it. That’s one good thing about a young guy…they still have all that passion for the game.
One of the reasons too I def didn’t want Coughlin, he has to be seriously burnt out by now. Not just because he has been in the NFL for so long, but also because of recent shit that has to have sucked the fun out of football for him.
good point
good points both Randy and D
My biggest complaint was Philbin was so stubborn. This worked against us in “my way or the highway” personnel issues. It also hurt his game plan execution, his clock management, and most of all his strong need and habit of trying to force the players he had into the scheme he wanted.
Gase has already said his philosophy is to run the schemes and plays that are best suited for the players he has. This is not just BS as he won with Tebow, Manning, and Cutler: very different guys.
Except that Rodgers has been playing behind a pretty bad OL for a long time and still makes plays. He hasn’t had good protection…he has great pocket awareness and pocket mobility….and made his OLs look much better than they are. Rodgers and Tannehill are nothing alike.
They’re not that far off but Rodgers is better for sure. On his best day, I think Rodgers is the best QB of all time though. There is nothing he can’t do. To me Tanny is a poor man’s Rodgers. Not as great, but pretty good. 🙂
Wow, Cousns is looking good. This is really the first time I’ve seen him play.
Cousins was my fallback QB for if we didn’t draft Tanny in the first, which I admit I was a fan of them doing.
Boom
Could have had him for a mere 3rd rounder
See my reply to Randy above, had several mocks where I passed on Tanny in the first, traded back to get extra picks and got Cousins instead, but my favorite option I had was staying put and drafting him. Cousins was my contingency plan as I believe a couple teams were rumored to potentially jump us to take him.
Cousins is playing with confidence and is playing great. He has support too. Good pass pro and good separation from his receivers.
Never understood why he dropped so far in that draft. And it had nothing to do with RG3. Cousins should have been picked about 20-25th in th efirst round.
He was always mocked 3-4th, he really didn’t fall, that was always where he was expected to be drafted, he and Wilson both.
Both big mistakes that I pointed out from the beginning.
Not Tanny bashing this is Ireland bashing:
We could, among others, have Keuchly, Cousins and Eifert
Hindsight is 20/20.
We don’t need Cousins, but I really really wish we had gotten Keuchly.
wow what a great little flick toss by Rodgers. Effortless.
Nice drive by Rodgers.
LOL, one of my favorite things about this board is that even with all the differing and opposing opinions, not a single person on this board has ever been wrong. I think we represent the ego of the typical American male quite well. All the over the top, normal, and subtle advancing of our own opinions and agendas in even the simplest posts cracks me up. It’s amazing most of us are married.
(I left Herd out of that on purpose. I’d never be so insulting as to compare her to a man.)
I also left our brethren across the seas and in Canada out of the comparison intentionally, as they all seem to be reasonable and open to differing opinion, lol.

Tanny beat Cousins? I thought we didn’t credit QBs with wins or loses? Oh, the logic changes more around here than the wind. Are you sure our OL didn’t beat their OL? Lol
I do like how Rodgers is so keen on catching the defenses in substitution mode & thus too many men on the field calls. That and his hard counts getting DL to jump.
I hope Gase is keen to this and gets Tanny to incorporate it more into his game.
Actually Tanny did improve on hard counts as this year wore on.
That and audibles is coming along now. Gase should really help there as well as reading defenses.

And Cousins fumbles again, holds the ball tooo long….he really sucks! Oh wait, it wasn’t his fault, it was the OL. 😉

Sad that we’re still waiting for someone to teach our 4 year veteran QB how to play QB, ain’t it? Lol
Brady mentioned a few weeks ago that he’s always learning something new. So, glad Tanny is teachable.

Yep! I allow myself to drink when I’m watching anybody but the Dolphins. So, the playoffs…where they never get…have seen a lot of grey goose poured down my throat! I get your sarcasm and raise you some smart assitude.
I like Aikman. He doesn’t call every bad throw by a QB a back shoulder throw. Lol
Stranger, sorry about your Pop.
He raised a good man I hope everything works out well enough. Peace my friend
Thanks Son…….he wasn’t the easist, but he was one of the best. And maybe if he was easier I would be less than I am. The world will miss him though. That’s for sure.
Rodgers over threw a wide open Cobb for what would’ve been a TD, and he had plenty of time in a good pocket. Happens to them all.
I never wanted to draft Cousins or Wilson.
But I did think they were drafted way lower than I thought they deserved to be.
McCarthy is back to calling the plays now too isn’t he? He looks like he is on sidelines.
Yes
stanger,
I must have missed that your father passed. My condolences, my friend. My dad is struggling with some health issues, and I have been struggling with even considering the idea that he won’t be around for ever. My condolences to you and your family.
Thanks Randy. We will all have to deal with at some point unless the saddest of all…..when parents buy children.
randy
to make it clear to your bucket loving grey goose drunk ass, i never ever give the qb credits for wins or losses. i was being sarcastic about all this love for cousins. i mean i do get it, i am from the south, trust me i get to love for some cousins
I’ll call myself out on two WRs i wanted to draft who have not done well. DaRick Rogers and Cordarelle Patterson. I did say they were both stupid and had character flaws, but I thought their natural ability would overcome that. I was wrong.
ffr
Don’t hate me because I’m drunk….hate me for giving your sister the greatest 3 minutes of her life!
You dated her for a week? 😉
Well If we are going to play this game!
We would never had to draft Tanny because I wanted Dalton!
Then we have Dalton and Kuechley!
Then instead of trading up for Jordan we stay put and take Lotulalala or Eifert the next year.
And with Lotu we don’t sign Suh!
randy
how many times do i have to tell you. anybody that give my sister 7 cents gives her the greatest minutes of her life. and i dont hate you cause your drunk, i hate you cause you didnt invite me to drink with you.
Difference between Tanny and Rodgers shows itself again. Can we stop with the stupid comparisons?

no one is comparing tanny to rodgers. they are comparing how both are not successful with the rest of their team around them isnt playing great
I’ve never seen Tanny in a game like this where it’s low scoring and open to either team for the taking. Both these QBs have been so good I can’t keep up with the points. LOL
And by the way!
I wanted Jamar Taylor in the exact spot we drafted him!
I guess there is a slight little bitty glimmer of hope?
Kong, do you notice how Tanny smirks a bit like Rodgers. Even just a little bit? I see a similarity there. Do you see it too? LOL
Does Stephen Ross own the Vikings too? Why would they build a new dome? If today’s game was inside Seattle would’ve smoked the Vikings. Yeah they won anyways, but the point is, they shouldn’t build an indoor stadium and give up their home field advantage.
Boy, that shitty Rodgers somehow figures out how to score 17 points….2 short of our average per game…in a half.
Tanny did the same thing leading into the half against the Giants 17-10 only to find the defense give it up within less than 2 minutes. Oh yeah he also hit Stills for a 43 yard TD to open up the 2nd half and the defense gave it up again. Crazy right?!!!! LOL
steve
Minnesota has the young, talented, hungry defense I wish we had. I don’t think today’s result as just a weather issue. Their defense is legit.
I still don’t give them a chance to win this game against Seattle in a non weather game. My point was about building the stadium though and not about today’s game. I just used today’s game to show the advantage Minn. has outdoors in that frigid cold.
I was in Minn. a few yrs ago at the end of March, I lived at the time in a cold weather city, and the 30 degrees seemed really cold.
ffr,
People keep comparing Tanny and Rodgers and their situations. Rodgers has a poor oline, he lost his best receiver, his current receivers drop passes, the running game has disappeared during long stretches of the season, and yet he got his team in the playoffs and will likely win this first playoff game (where his oline has been spotty at best). Tanny didn’t do anything remotely close to this and hasn’t proven anything. He shouldn’t ever be compared to Rodgers, and Rodgers having a bad game, or a bad play doesn’t equate to Tanny having a bad season.
LOL, Tim. They both have a lazy eye too.
The only thing that’s even remotely similar about Tannehill and Rodgers is that I’d like to sleep with both their ladies.
The similarities are they both are mobile and have strong arms. RT though should go see OZ, because he lacks a brain. I mean his football IQ and pocket awareness just stink.
‘yet he got his team in the playoffs and will likely win this first playoff game’
yep, just rodgers did it. wow, why cant the fins have a qb that can do everything and not need any help from any other part of his team. maybe this gase dude can teach tanny how to play better defense
Another blown call by the refs, smh.
Adam Gase, he’s our man, if he can’t do it nobody can!!! Yay team!!! LOL
kong
i guess the sarcasm doent happen on sundays. i am pretty sure everyone here knows how much better rodgers is then tanny. they are just pointing out even a player of rodgers caliber struggles when the rest of his team does too.
i guess i will never get why some (not saying you) just think the qb wins and loses the game and dont realize the qb never plays a down on defense.
