Tom Coughlin

Tom Coughlin for President?

Hue Jackson

Hue Jackson – Right on brother!

Sean Payton for a 2nd RD pick? Mike Shanahan? Adam Gase? Tom Coughlin? Dan Campbell? Bill Belichick for Suh, Landry, Parker and Tannehill? Hue Jackson? Mike Shula? Teryl Austin? Mike Smith?

Who will be the next head Coach of the Miami Dolphins?

Out of all the options above, and there are sure to be other options in the near future, I actually have 2 favorites from that bunch.

If we’re going with the short term stopgap, and a HC who will give us respectability immediately, and as part of the package, grooms our next HC in Dan Campbell, I’m all for Tom Coughlin. Coughlin is a well respected HC and person in the NFL. Once a fierce disciplinarian type coach, being a military man, Coughlin was a no nonsense man. As HC of the NYG, he felt like he was losing his team, and changed his approach to a more friendlier relationship with his players, and the team responded and went to the Super Bowl and won. Is 70 years old too old? I say hell no! I’ve seen great managers in baseball like Jim Leyland, Jack McKeon succeed in their 70’s, and heck, Ronald Reagan was 70 when he was elected President, and he did a fantastic job running our country.

I like Dan Campbell, but I just don’t think he’s ready to run a team yet. Too many things he’s deficient in, but what a truly great guy to learn from Tom Coughlin would be. A true professional, a winner. Of course, nothing has been documented that Coughlin and or Cambell would agree to this set up, but it seems legitimate to me, and I like it.

If we’re looking for a long term (hopefully), I like Hue Jackson. (I would like Mike Shula too, but as so far, he hasn’t been mentioned as a coach we’re interested in) Jackson wasn’t given a fair shot with the Raiders, he went 8-8, and was fired. Incidentally, Hue’s OC in OAK was Al Saunders, the guy we brought in to “help” our offense after Philbin was fired. Jackson has done good things as OC for the Bengals. Dalton is playing his best football of his career this year, and most believe that is credit due to Hue Jackson. Bengals fans are actually crying for Dalton to play in the playoffs when they clearly all know Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs.

  • Friday January 8th Update! *

Yesterday, the Dolphins interviewed Bears Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase.  Supposedly it was a long, thorough interview.  That means this week, the Dolphins have interviewed Mike Shanahan, Mike Smith, Teryl Austin and Anthony Lynn.  Dan Campbell will make his case today, and Doug Marrone and Hue Jackson will follow this weekend.

We offered Dirk Koetter the job? When did we interview him?

tim, i am just repeating what the talk was on tampa sports radio they kept going back and forth from offering him the job to requesting and interview. seems tbaum used to be his agent and really likes him. the bucs were sure he would hire him. again, just talking heads running their mouth but it is kind of what we all do here, but dont get paid for it.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it was assumed that we were interested in Koetter. Not sure if he was actually even offered an interview.

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Obviously both sides of the ball need to improve. I think the offense has a tougher uphill climb. We simply don’t score enough to win often. Our defense would have to be great to win games when we can’t even average 20 points a game.
    ***
We ranked 27th in scoring at 19.4. We ranked 19th in points allowed at 24.3. We have got to find a way to score more points. It’d be nice if our defense was around 20 instead of 24, but I think it’s the offense that needs to get much better. You’re not going anywhere in the playoffs if you can’t score 20 points. The top 10 teams score at least 24 a game. Our offense has a long way to go.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Totally agreed. That’s why most draft sites say we need major upgrades on the OL. 😉

      From NFL.com
“Analysis: Adding talent to the cornerback position should be one of Miami’s top priorities, as Brent Grimes turns 33 this summer and the rest of the roster isn’t where it needs to be at that position. The Dolphins have talent on their roster, but something isn’t clicking with them. Offensively, the Dolphins are going to have to find better players at both tackle and guard. The offensive tackle position needs more competition and the guard spot needs more talent.”

  6. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

At this point, Hue Jackson might get the 1st offer (Tannanbaum was his agent LOL) but it’s a seller’s market and Hue will have options.

From a May 2014 dated article discussing Mike as an agent after his life as Jets GM:

“As the president for the new coaches, front office and broadcasters division of Mark Bartelstein’s Priority Sports & Entertainment, Tannenbaum counts Kerr and Danny Manning as clients, as well as the former Oakland Raiders coach Hue Jackson and the Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.”

  7. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Al,
I’m bummed that King isn’t gonna enter the draft. Really glad he’s staying at Iowa though!

  8. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
We definitely need much better play from the OL. It’s going to be interesting to see how they address it in the offseason. I think it’s very risky to rely on rookies to come in and solidify the OL. I assume they’ll try to address it thru FA too.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I also assume John Benton will be looking for a job.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we need to sign a starting guard and we need to find a tackle who’s an upgrade over Fox. Hopefully Albert and James play most snaps this season, that will help a lot. Pouncey too.

I still think one of our young guards can improve but I’m not sure Thomas is one of them. He still gets beaten badly too often and he’s now played a lot of games in two seasons.

  9. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Chris Grier just signed his secret weapon.

    Andrew Abramson ✔ @AbramsonPBP
Tyler Davis, who will be in camp for Dolphins, was German football league MVP. 24 TDs as a WR & 6 INTs as a DB in 2015

  10. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    gdp
I don’t think Benton all of a sudden became a bad coach. Yeah, he might not be retained, but it was the players that didn’t perform. Benton carries some blame for not developing our young guys. I thought Thomas and Turner especially didn’t show improvement as the year went along. But, we just saw a lot of bad play from our OL this season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What Benton was know for was executing a really good ZBS running game which we saw produce plenty of times. The problem was we didn’t do it enough. Not much Benton can do with limited talent in pass pro mixing and matching guys when our best guys couldn’t go.

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I wasn’t a fan of drafting Thomas because he always seemed soft to me, but people fell in love with his ability to get to the second level. I thought Ireland drafted him way before he should have been. He has very good athleticism for a big man, but his footwork, punch and balance are just not good. He’s better in space. He’s frustrating because he probably has the best combination of size and athleticism on the OL. Turner has disappointed. I thought he played worse than Thomas. If it weren’t for Fox being terrible, Turner would have probably been our worst performer. But, he deserves more time to develop. Douglas got some valuable playing time, so maybe he steps in at a guard position next season…which is a little easier to play than center.
    ***
To me, Albert’s health and status is a big issue for this team in the short term. If he can stay on the field, it makes shoring up this OL much easier. That’s assuming James comes back at RT.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Turner has only played one year so he should get another year but he has to play a lot better. Albert was our best OL this year and he was healthy most of the year, played in 14 games. James going down really hurt us. Why do you question James coming back?

  14. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
The best way to disrupt zone blocking is with penetration. Nothing we did this year on offense made it hard for teams to get penetration. I think that was mostly an issue with how they ran the offense and our inability to back teams away from the LOS. Teams simply didn’t fear our ability to attack down the field.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They knew we wouldn’t have the time. Also being in shotgun so often there wasn’t much for them to think about.

  15. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tyler Davis – My new training camp favorite!

Reserve/future contracts rarely attract attention in the NFL — they’re players who fill up OTA spots and sometimes make it to training camp or the preseason.

But Tyler Davis — 5-foot-10, 178 pounds — is an interesting case.

After graduating from NAIA Missouri Valley in Marshall, Mo., he spent last year with the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes of the German Football League.

He was a two-way player, earning the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

As a receiver he had 94 receptions for 1,733 yards and 24 touchdowns.

As a defensive back he had six interceptions.

In college he also returned kickoffs and punts, with four kickoff returns for touchdowns. And he was an NAIA All-American as an indoor track long jumper.

It’s still a long shot he will make the Dolphins roster. But he should be a fun player to track this spring and summer.

This would be a good DC hire for Miami. I wonder what HC candidates are the closest to him?

    Buccaneers fired DC Leslie Frazier.
Tampa Bay declined to pick up Frazier’s option and also let go of a number of defensive assistants. The Bucs were 10th in total defense, 16th against the pass, and 11th against the run. They were also 16th in takeaways and 14th in sacks. Those aren’t bad numbers by any means, but coach Lovie Smith ran the defensive side of the ball, so all his assistants had to go, too. Frazier should land back on his feet. He’s been a defensive coordinator for eight seasons.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He just proved it last Sunday. We didn’t have a great running game but we stuck with it ran it 34 times and the protection was better. Gee… what a concept! LOL

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike E, that wasn’t the first time RT played well. He had 4-5 games this year with a QB rating over 100 and he’s had some 90s. The problem is this year he had more bad games but so did the team.

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
No, I don’t think he can be a “very good QB”.Why? Because, to me, that means consistency and playmaking. Very good QBs make winning plays and raise the level of the offense around them. They don’t less it to other yo Jake plays. THEY make them. Over 4 years, he has rarely been a playmaker, and he is not consistent. He’ll have a good game or quarter but has rarely been a difference maker on a consistent basis. He puts up numbers just like all half-way decent QBs do in the league now, but does he win games for you when it matters?
    ***
And, I’m curious. Do you see him as a playmaker? A guy who wins games even when things around him aren’t perfect?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Honestly, I don’t see him as “clutch” or as a playmaker, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be those things. It has to start with better protection up front, and if/when he gets that on a more consistent basis, and he still can’t do it, then I’ll believe he never will be.

‘A guy who wins games even when things around him aren’t perfect?’

you mean like brady did the last game or 4 out of the last 6 games since his oline has fallen apart. or like rodgers has done all year. or i know, more like the best qb ever who just couldnt pull out those 52-48 shoot outs against the jets cause his defense sucked so bad.

i really dont get why one person is suppose to rise up above the failures of the entire team and carry them to victory when it is proven over and over that no other qb can do that.

  56. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
You always try to change the argument to absolutes. We can’t have a discussion with that mindset. It’s about HOW OFTEN he makes plays. Of course he’s made some plays in 4 years. But, he hasn’t made nearly enough, and has been very inconsistent. And, that’s been with or without guys playing well around him. Last week meant nothing, in my mind. NE wasn’t even trying. Just like when he threw 6 of his 27 TDs in 2 meaningless games at the end of the season last year. So what? They were completely meaningless in meaningless games where the other teams weren’t even trying. Can he do it when it matters? He hasn’t so far very often.
    ***
Do you feel he’s made a lot of plays over 4 years? Without blaming the OL for it, has Tannehill made plays consistently?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think I was doing that but okay I’ll play. Yes I do think he needs to play more clutch and make more game changing plays. I do think he can play better too. But I’m sorry our offense as a hole wasn’t capable of it this year because of play calling, execution flaws by everyone at times and penalties. We hurt ourselves more than defenses beat us. Forget RT for a second and put another QB in there, I’d be saying the same thing. It’s not a defense of RT, it is what I saw.

Our defense also wasn’t clutch, had too many bad execution plays and took too many bad penalties. They hurt themselves at times more than offenses beat us. We had way too many stops erased because of bad penalties.

That’s why we were 6-10 and had a bad year. Oh yeah some say it was coaching too. LOL

That sort of answer makes no sense to me because Brady has already done it a lot in his career. It’s not even a fair question. Yes, Brady has won games many, many times because he made plays to win. Tannehill doesn’t. And, Brady has done it with crappy players around him too. NE’s OL was a terrible mess this year…they still won twice as many games as we did. Why?
    ***
Like it or not, QBs have much more impact on winning and losing than anybody else on the field. They CAN put teams on their backs and win. Centers can’t. Guards can’t.

He’s having a good year. He hasn’t done this his entire career though. Let’s see him do it again next year, and let’s see him play well in a playoff game too

I really don’t know a lot about what they can do, but I do know that it’s really serious, especially given her age.

I think we’ve all exhausted our views on the team and specifically Tannehill. Let’s hope they all get better.

On another note, what do you guys think of Neville Hewitt? I think he really looks the part of a quality OLB. He shows up on STs a lot and then when he got his chance at LB he flashed there quite a bit. I think he was one of the better young players we added this year, not just of the UDFAs.

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL – That’s great Herd, that was pretty damn long!

Mike, Cousins got a chance to start as Tannehill did and he took his team to the playoffs there’s no reason to think he won’t continue to play well. He’s a good passer and a leader.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s on a hot streak and I give him credit. Let’s see where it goes. We beat ‘him’ by the way. 😉

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’ll see. I never really considered him a good QB. He was prone to throwing INT’s, but this year, he’s avoided that. It’s one year, you can’t say he’s arrived until he does it again. As far as Tannehill, he was trending upwards until this season. He had a bad year on a bad team. I know his weaknesses, I’m not a shill, but I think with good coaching, and better protection, he may be able to what we want him to do.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        That’s how I feel. I hope that’s okay. 😉

But I don’t think you can say he had a bad year, just not good enough. Bad is bad, he wasn’t that most of the time. The stats show that.

Seattle did not lose the SB because of the QB. Lol

yes randy, i know, we all know, the only team that loses cause of their qb is the dolphins.

Let’s see our own QB do something close to it

lmfao, yes lets yippie, lets see the fins qb lead his team to 9-7. now if we can only get every other team in the division to be sub 500 teams the fins will have it made.

yeah but didnt you hear, the pats quit that game so it doesnt count what any player did

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think they quit, they played scared. They were afraid our defensive front would hurt Brady and they did. We’ve hurt about 5-6 QBs this year.

didnt he fill in for rgIII and even lost that job as a backup? never mind it doesnt matter, fact dont mean anything, just as long as it isnt tanny the qb is the greatest ever.

    Ok bye

oh come on son, dont leave. i mean give us some more of your wisdom of how cousins is such a great qb and led his team to a 9-7 record while making sure every one else in his division was sub 500

  88. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

cousins is playing for a tanny type contract from Snyder. Let’s see how he plays after he gets paid.

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I appreciate your response above. I truly do. We’ve been talking football for, like, a decade, bud! You know I know it’s a team game. A couple hours ago I was saying our OL needs to play much better too. I can watch a play and see the OL screw it up when Tanny does it right too. I just think it’s okay to have the opinion that we’ve seen enough from Tanny in 4 years to have an idea of what he is or isn’t. I believe we can evaluate him independent of others with the full understanding of how poor play/coaching around him affects certain plays or certain aspects of his game. And, again, all I’ve really ever said is that I think he’s an average QB. Other than his pocket presence, I’ve never said he sucks or anything like that. Lol
    ***
None of us know what he will become, and the great thing is that we get to watch and find out. Some guys are late bloomers. We’ll see one way or another. I hope I’m wrong!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s all good, man. Let’s hope I’m right on this and RT can take his game to another level with not an all-pro team around him lol, just a better overall team starting with coaching on down to the last man on the 53. I think next season is big for his career in Miami as the lock starting QB. But I want to see what we do with the rest of the team too. This wasn’t a good team this year.

  90. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    tim

it wasnt me that said the pats quit. i was just repeating the wisdom of others. besides you know every team that is playing for home field advantage through out the playoffs always quit

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Randy

I appreciate your opinions, I really do. I appreciate everyone’s opinions here, and most of what you say about Tannehill too. I guess I’m just still hopeful he can be corrected, or a late bloomer as you said. If anyone has a chance to do that, it would be him, with his limited experience at QB in college, and all the coaching turnover here.

  92. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Maybe I’m wrong, but I don’t think I claimed NE quit. I was saying they were playing it safe and winning wasn’t necessarily their main objective. I also think our defense was kicking their asses from the kickoff. It was great to see. I don’t think we got NE’s best…even if they’ve been sucking lately. Just my opinion.

  93. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    randy

i am pretty sure mike is right, you said something of the effect they didnt try. so you got everyone there. you didnt say they quit, just said they didnt try. i should apologize for that major difference. every one knows not trying is way way better then quitting. hell the two have nothing in common

  94. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    MikeE,
I’ve said many times; I kind think about the blog as if I’m at a bar with a bunch of my buddies, and we’re all just bullshitting and talking ball. With the gorgeous herd, of course, sitting quietly and watching us all make fools of ourselves with a smirk on her face knowing deep inside she knows more about football than all of us combined! You can be wrong with your buddies…get your balls busted for it…and still be cool. It’s just football for Jahn’s sake.

I always enjoy the conversations. It can wear on you sometimes, but I’d get tired of Selma Hayek if I had to talk to her every day about football. I’d have to sneak away and look at porn sooner or later. Lol

  95. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Just saying not making excuses or anything. We’re going to have our 3rd offense in 5 years this season. But I think we need a new more sensible offense so I welcome it. We really need to find a HC to get this team going and create an identity. I hope the new regime gets it right.

I’m not going to throw a parade or bash whoever we hire as our HC until I see some games. I don’t think we really know enough about a lot of these guys as HCs. One thing we probably do know, some are going to fail and only 1-2 will probably do well. We see it all the time. I hope we land 1 or 2. 🙂

Brian, still sending ++++++vibes. This sort of thing really touches me. I’m sorry you and your family are going through this and especially little Brynn.

  98. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Yep, nobody can ever really know for certain if someone can be a HC until they’ve done it. We need to stop having this conversation every 3 years. That’s getting us nowhere.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah it does get exhausting especially as we get older. I mean come on, we’re due to have a few good seasons. Come on!
