Tom Coughlin

Tom Coughlin for President?

Hue Jackson

Hue Jackson – Right on brother!

Sean Payton for a 2nd RD pick? Mike Shanahan? Adam Gase? Tom Coughlin? Dan Campbell? Bill Belichick for Suh, Landry, Parker and Tannehill? Hue Jackson? Mike Shula? Teryl Austin? Mike Smith?

Who will be the next head Coach of the Miami Dolphins?

Out of all the options above, and there are sure to be other options in the near future, I actually have 2 favorites from that bunch.

If we’re going with the short term stopgap, and a HC who will give us respectability immediately, and as part of the package, grooms our next HC in Dan Campbell, I’m all for Tom Coughlin. Coughlin is a well respected HC and person in the NFL. Once a fierce disciplinarian type coach, being a military man, Coughlin was a no nonsense man. As HC of the NYG, he felt like he was losing his team, and changed his approach to a more friendlier relationship with his players, and the team responded and went to the Super Bowl and won. Is 70 years old too old? I say hell no! I’ve seen great managers in baseball like Jim Leyland, Jack McKeon succeed in their 70’s, and heck, Ronald Reagan was 70 when he was elected President, and he did a fantastic job running our country.

I like Dan Campbell, but I just don’t think he’s ready to run a team yet. Too many things he’s deficient in, but what a truly great guy to learn from Tom Coughlin would be. A true professional, a winner. Of course, nothing has been documented that Coughlin and or Cambell would agree to this set up, but it seems legitimate to me, and I like it.

If we’re looking for a long term (hopefully), I like Hue Jackson. (I would like Mike Shula too, but as so far, he hasn’t been mentioned as a coach we’re interested in) Jackson wasn’t given a fair shot with the Raiders, he went 8-8, and was fired. Incidentally, Hue’s OC in OAK was Al Saunders, the guy we brought in to “help” our offense after Philbin was fired. Jackson has done good things as OC for the Bengals. Dalton is playing his best football of his career this year, and most believe that is credit due to Hue Jackson. Bengals fans are actually crying for Dalton to play in the playoffs when they clearly all know Dalton is 0-4 in the playoffs.

  • Friday January 8th Update! *

Yesterday, the Dolphins interviewed Bears Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase.  Supposedly it was a long, thorough interview.  That means this week, the Dolphins have interviewed Mike Shanahan, Mike Smith, Teryl Austin and Anthony Lynn.  Dan Campbell will make his case today, and Doug Marrone and Hue Jackson will follow this weekend.

The officiating may not have been stellar this year including last night but what happened at the end of the game last night is all on the bengals. I am not blaming the officials for that melt down

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I agree with this. The officials can’t see everything and if the players acted like adults they would have nothing to HAVE to see.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You don’t really believe that do you? Under very few circumstances at that stage of the game should there have been 2 PFs, and absolutely not for the Jones tiny shove.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ken, I do blame the officiating crew. They didn’t have to call either of those personal fouls. I watched the Burfect hit this morning several times and yes he was way late, but he just grazed Antonio, then Antonio does this baby rant type of spin around which drew the flag (flopping). I can see how that was called, and it probably was a PF, but other than the chosen 6 (NE, Pit, NY, NY, GB, and Dal) no other team is getting even one of those PFs called at that stage of the game.

The Jones PF was a horrible call. Why wasn’t Joey Porter called for being on the field? Because he plays for one of the chosen 6. I’m a Steeler fan, about my 2nd or 3rd favorite team, but there’s no debating they get the calls.

  3. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The ones crying foul should be the cheats, as they would’ve been better off going against Cin., than KC.

  4. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Steve, I do believe that. The last people I blame last night are the refs. I thought the hit on Brown was worthy of a pf call.

  5. Ken's avatar Ken says:

The Burfict was egregious it was late intentional and on the helmet. He is likely to be suspended in addition to fined

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

      As well he should be.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I said that one was ok to call, even though most teams wouldn’t get it, but the one that won the game for Pit was the PF on Jones, it was horrible. I also think Burfect is an idiot and made a bad judgement at that stage of the game to do what he did.

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

It’s not that the bengals didn’t deserve the flags

It’s that the steelers did and some how mysteriously those flags were thrown

You cannot tell me the shazier hit on Bernard was not exhibit A of what the NFL is supposed to call in terms of using the helmet

Or that Joey Porter on the field was less egregious than pac man jones confronting him

I wasn’t impressed with the way the bengals handled everything
It got really out of control after the Bernard hit IMO
And that was an atrocious missed call

But I think the way the tv crew analyzed it was probably the worst part of it and that has no effect of the outcome

I definately think the bengals choked
    And hurt themselves

But the poor officiating should not be thrown under the rug bc of it

I almost don’t blame them for getting mad about it
If it was a game in September
    Then it’s probably worth it
But in the postseason – that’s it – it’s over for you

    I like Marvin Lewis
But I think he needed to try to reel the teams collective anger in

IMO though the Bengals anger was justified

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The hit on Bernard was helmet to helmet, but that is rarely called when the 2 are going straight at each other, unless a QB is involved.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Oh I don’t knowing seen it called a lot
It’s usually the defenders responsibility to not use his helmet on the tackle

If shazier hits Bernard in the chest (bc Bernard doesn’t lower or move his head) and shazier hits Bernard in the chest with his helmet – it’s still a penalty

A RB can’t use his helmet diet her
But that isn’t what Bernard was doing IMO

Shazier just flung himself at Bernard with his helmet
It’s exactly the kind of thing the NFL has said its trying to stop

        Guess not though

  7. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    And more importantly
It’s not the outcome of the game that concerns me
It’s the arbitrary nature of the rules
Giving refs too much discretion to affect the game
And seeing a team like Pitt benefit from it

When Pitt, New England and Denver benefit from being able to do what other teams can’t do
There is a problem in the NFL

  8. D's avatar D says:

Stranger, condolences for the loss of your father. Sorry to hear of his passing. Didn’t get on much last night so I didn’t read back and see about you and Brian’s losses until today

Brian same to you man, so sorry to hear about your niece. That’s tragic as it comes. Very sorry to hear about it.

Stanger, as far as family goes, I feel ya on what happened. I have an aunt and uncle and cousins I really have nothing to do with despite them previously being family I was very close to, because of just that kind of thing. Compound the sorrow of the passing with seeing greed overpower compassion and caring. Makes the hurt that much deeper.

Hope she gets what she deserves, and I mean that in more than just what she receives from the will.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well put D. Dad set it up in concrete……just turns out she wanted more. Rest is up to me. Long history, but even if I don’t get anything out of the will……part of why it was set up that way.

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I also thought the burfict call was warranted

But the fact that Joey porter was in the field confronting burfict and osc man jones gets a penalty is inexplicable

  10. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Piggy:
The Shazier hit was legal. You can have helmet to contact with a runner. You can’t do that to a defenseless receiver or a QB in the pocket. Refs judgment that Bernard transitioned from defenseless receiver prior to being hit. Close call imo but not an unreasonable one.

  11. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    ‘Refs judgment’

    ken,

and there you have what these rules have become. the refs have now become a part of the outcome of the game. pitt does not win that game last night without them and the ‘judgement’ calls

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

You can’t eliminate judgment calls from the game. The Bernard play in live action was what would be called in baseball vernacular a bang bang play. It happened so quick you are just left to your judgment and the replay showed they got it right.

  12. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

even that td catch by bryant, with any other team that would be an incomplete pass because he never had possession when he went out of bounds. but yesterday the refs ‘judgement’ decided for pitt. amazing those teams that get great tv ratings are always successful

just ask the giants from their game against the cheats.

Blog. The EXPLOSIVE lengths Joe Philbin went to to disavow himself from Ryan Tannehill:

    http://miamiherald.typepad.com/dolphins_in_depth/

Where were our stalwart reporters this season when this was going on?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s pretty fucked up. Well obviously there was dysfunction and not everyone was on the same page. Let’s hope that changes and at least right now we know we’re on the same page as we hired the guy we wanted to be our HC, we didn’t settle for scraps. We targeted Gase, rumors were out there that we were targeting him and now he’s the HC. So we got our man whether people agree or not. Now all that matters are results and the W/L column.

Our coaching staff is likely going to be young so hopefully they bring a lot of energy, innovation for the way the game is played today and that we become an aggressive team that takes the game to the opponent. I didn’t feel we played like that in recent times. We always seemed to react to what the other team was doing.

  15. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

yet every ‘judgement’ call, every bang bang call went for the steelers. just amazing how that happened.

Then he’s a shill for the team! Not a reporter!

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Son probably just became a huge Philbin fan. lol

Now I have to wonder how much Philbin actually tried to help Tannehill become a better player. If you feel like your strapped with a player you don’t like, sometimes you might go to lengths to make sure he doesn’t succeed, so you can get rid of them, especially after he had to fire his buddy Mike Sherman.

  19. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wow, interesting piece by Mando. It explains some odd coaching decisions and it gives me a little more hope that maybe the issues with Tanny can still be resolved. It’s got to be hard to learn and play the QB position when the HC is against you.

  20. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

The helmet rule has nothing to do with whether a guy is a receiver or not
You can’t use yiur helmet to make a tackle
You can’t hit another guy in the helmet
The tv crew bonched the analysis by talking about the defenseless receiver rule

If Bernard took a handoff an ran it would be an illegal hit

That is my point about the tv crew
They didn’t know WTF they are talking about
You can’t use the crown of your helmet for a tackle on any player, receiver or not but if you listed to the tv crew on that call it was all about the defenseless receiver rule which led them to their conclusion

That type of hit is a concussion maker
And should be the nfl nemesis
It’s not a judgment call – you need to make that call

  21. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Mike…..actually Son will be pissed. He will be like:”what? We could have drafted Derrick Carr?” Lol

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000335018/article/rules-recap-crownofhelmet-rule-helps-to-lower-dangerous-hits

You can’t hit a guy with your helmet
That’s all there is to it
And that is what shazier blatantly did
    It was quite egregious
The fumble should have been null
The bengals should have had a 1st down by penalty
It knocked Bernard out of game
It’s as bad as it gets not to call that

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bookman,

OK, pissed AND a huge Philbin fan all at once

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The only curious thing here is who decided that Ryan Tannehill was the real deal and gave him that contract if Philbin made it so clear that Ryan wasn’t a good QB? Isn’t that strange?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Also, equally as strange, if they knew Philbin wasn’t a Tannehill supporter at that point, and they gave Tannehill a big contract, W(hy)TF didn’t they fire Philbin last year and hire a new Head Coach before this season?

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, does nobody on this blog realize that Joey Porter is a coach for the BENGALS?

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Holy shit. nvmd. He’s a fucking Steelers coch? I thought he was a Bengals coach. Wow, that really does change what happened last night

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL Kong – He had no business on the field last night. He could have/should have been flagged for just being on the field at that point.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

But I’m still trying to forget I’ve ever heard the name!!!!!!!

  26. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  27. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LMAO, I was so drunk I thought he was the Bengals position coach. I couldn’t understand why Jones got a flag for trying to get his coach off the field. smh

  28. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would really like to hear some replies to my 2:07 and 2:09 posts. Don’t they make you wonder????

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well Mr. T wanted to fire Philbin last year and Hickey is also gone now so I would say Mr. T and Grier were on board with RT. They are the new power structure and hired a new HC knowing Tannehill is their guy, at least heading into 2016.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, good questions. Disfunction from th start

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well at least to start Gase and Tannehill are going to become very close. I like the idea that we have a HC who will call the offensive plays. He’s directly involved with the chess match and is in constant communication with his QB. I like that Gase said his offensive system is more about the players he has than a system. He uses elements of the WC and Air Coryell via Martz philosophies. Chicago was 5th in rushing attempts at 29.2 so he’s willing to keep it on the ground. We were last in the league at 21.5.

  30. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

ok, last comment on the refs. That 2nd flag was completely egregious.

How about those Dolphins?! Woohoo, I’m excited again. How long till the season starts and all my hopes and dreams are crushed like a kid who discovers Santa Claus isn’t real?

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

So what happened? Ross prevented Mr. T from firing Philbin, and now that the team was in a shambles, he empowers Mr. T to hire and fire EVERYONE????

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is one of my favorite scenes in a fantastic movie

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think that was the case yes right or wrong. Remember Philbin and Mr. T. reported directly to Ross and Hickey reported to Mr. T. Ross wanted Philbin to succeed and once he started the season 1-3 and looking bad doing it, he fired Philbin and then Mr. T’s power came more to the forefront to where we are now.

We did it the right way this time, we hired the HC with the FO in place so Gase was comfortable with who was in charge of football operations (Mr. T) and who ran the personnel dept. (Chris Grier). Grier and Gase are going to become very close very soon with the Senior Bowl, Combine, Pro Days and FA.

After Gase hires his staff I’m sure he will watch every game this year and get a feel for this team. Then meet players and go from there to get a sense of what we need and how to put the team together.

  32. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Kong
At least that would explain why they NEVER put a game plan together for Tanny’s strengths!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

lol, you mean never put a gameplan together at all? 🙂

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

But it doesn’t explain why Philbin kept his job. I can’t tell you how pissed off I am right now. The more I think about it, the more angry I get. HC doesn’t like QB, wants new QB. Someone in management gives QB huge contract, yet keeps HC who doesn’t support QB. How can you do that? Especially when the HC sucked and showed no reason to keep him in the first place.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think Ross calculated his expenditures for cleaning crews would double if he got rid of Philbin. The power of a clean freak cannot be overstated.

  33. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This game has been ridiculously boring.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s sub 0 degrees. That ball is like a rock and blood flow is limited.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I used to love playing in the rain and the mud, but when it drops below freezing every little thing hurts like somebody is jabbing you with a knife.

  34. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    kong

what make the 2nd flag even worse. was i think it was in the second half. one of the bengal players got flagged just for that. running onto the field during a break just like that to settle things and they flagged him.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Realizing Porter was a Steelers coach changes my entire perception of how that went down, and gives me better perspective on why you were so ticked off last night. It doesn’t change the fact the Brown call was 100% right, but what should have happened was Porter should have been flagged and it should have basically evened out with the Steelers still needing 10-15 yards for a long FG.

The refs throwing that 2nd flag on Jones made it a chip shot, and you’re right, they did determine the outcome of the game.

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, me too. I loved playing despite weather. I loved fishing with it a bit dreary and raining. But sub zero shuts everything down. Fuck that! LOL

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I bet Gase is going to love having Landry and Parker. Two talented WRs with some different skill sets but playmakers. His job is to help Ryan get them the ball so they can make plays.

  37. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Luckily now it looks to be finally sorted out and we can now get everyone on the same page as Grier immediately said. I hope they all have a great working relationship now and then the successes will come.

Go Tbomb, Grier, Gase, Tanny, & Suh!

    Go Phins!

  38. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  39. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Not his best look….but I think he’ll bring some new freshness that this franchise needed, sans Mancampbell. Hope the players go all out for him and take their craft seriously!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He might be the best thing Tannehill could have asked for. Hopefully Gase builds the offense around RT’s strengths as well as other players and he has said that’s how it will be. I love that he said the offense could look different week to week. That tells you he’s a game planner and approaches it from a matchup standpoint. Lazor ran the same shit every week regardless.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I think it’s at this point it’s “You HOPE and THINK” we did it right this time. I’m still totally perplexed how and why we kept Philbin, knowing he didn’t support the QB. He did absolutely nothing to earn keeping his job here, and knowing he wasn’t behind your starting QB, who was just given a multi-year contract, just kills me. On the surface hiring Gase may seem like the right move, but as of now, I have little confidence that anything these a-holes do is the right thing.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes, but what I meant is we’re not hiring people with other people already in place. Gase took the job knowing who was in charge and he was comfortable about it. Results are all that matters now. I’m taking the wait and see approach too, but I can still look for the positives with the new regime until they prove us wrong. I prefer that over we’ll suck again and do all this again in 3+ years. That’s not how I roll.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

The comforting this is most all the teams seeking a new HC had Gase at or near the top of their lists. We got the guy many of the other teams wanted.
I’m warming up to it. I’m just a lil scared of the coordinators that will be in place, and a lil worried of drafting & FA moves with Grier/Tbomb.

  41. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

LOL Kong – I’m really surprised at how angry I am right now. It’s like all the bile hatred I had for Philbin as our coach is rising from my stomach to my throat, and I want to tear Philbin’s head off and breathe a fiery stream of fire-bile down his neck. lol

I was glad to hear Gase’s approach week to week & playing the game around the players he has, & not around an inanimate system that doesn’t work.

I’m not sure I buy the Philbin sabotaged Tannehill stuff. He could have pulled him if he didn’t like him, they could have drafted a guy in a higher round, were he to not believe in him for his offense. He after all needed to make the most out of things in order to save his own ass. There is also the 0 reports of issues until now that a new HC and reported QB guru has been hired.

Just don’t buy it. I think Philbin just simply was a failed HC, and couldn’t manage his staff well. I also think he may have been responsible for being loyal to a guy who may not have been able to do much with Tanny, and its potentially true that Lazor didn’t think much of Tanny. perhaps then Philbins loyalty to Lazor could have been an issue.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

As for last nights game Yeah there were some really odd plays and calls non calls. Very nice work by Pitt receiver on TD. Crazy skills. Still not sure should be a td but …. And the hit that knocked Bernard out if game had me scratching my head on why that not penalty. But as soon as it was ruled ” a football move” i knew pitt was getting the challenge awarded. Crazy game for 2nd half.

That report about Philbin just further drives home everything I’ve said about him in the last several years. He was willing to put himself out of a job to prove a point about his quarterback that he had a part in drafting.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I really don’t care about Philbin anymore. The season sucked and I’m sure there were a lot of reasons for it. Right from the get go we didn’t look right and I’ve posted this before, but going back to the last 4 games last year and the first 4 this year, we were 2-6. We were not on an ascending path, we were getting worse.

Tim, my bad on the kids. I was looking at a bio that had no mention of children.
Regardless, he’s just embarking on pinnacle position of his career. I know he’ll be giving it everything he has. Tanny will too. He’s been through a lot in a short 4 years and know he has to hit a turning point. He should really soak up everything he gets from Gase & asst. coaches.

I was reading where Gase had the QB coach in Chicago toss bean bags @ Cutler to help train him of packet awareness and shifting his body & stances around in a pocket with bean bags flying at him….lol

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

I like the bean bag idea. I think pocket awareness is RTs biggest need of improvement.

Was there any mention of OC ideas?? I saw the def listings Noone really jumped out at me

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Speculation is he could bring his QB coach Dowell Loggains from Chicago as the OC. But Gase is calling the plays. So I don’t look for any big names there either.
The defensive side is what worries me….ugh.

He saw what an experienced Wade Phillips does in Denver & Vic Fangio in Chicago. So I’m not sure DB coach Vance Joseph would be my choice.

what I don’t understand is that if you don’t have faith in your QB when why do you stubbornly keep such a high pass to run ratio, especially when running the ball was so successful and allowed for the passing game to be better.

What I like about what I know of Gase is he seems to be flexible in how a team plays week to week. Not every opponent or game is the same. Lazor called games like it was Madden. He just did his thing. And it sucked by the way most of the time. Even the worst of gamblers win sometimes.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Piggy i agree on Philbin not appearing to be a very good coach. Even going back as far as Bullygate. But hiring Staff that Can work with RT as qb sounds better than the alternative

  76. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

We need Gase to get Tannehill more confident or whatever it is late in the game so he’s more accurate. Better accuracy on late drives would have won us a few more games in and of itself.
Tannehill threw one fourth quarter TD when we were within seven points- for the entire season.

what I don’t understand is that if you don’t have faith in your QB when why do you stubbornly keep such a high pass to run ratio

aaahhhh maybe cause it is more like what D said. all a bunch of crap. funny how something as big as this is reported when the coach isnt around to defend it. i think it may have some merit but i dont think it was really as it is being blown out to be. besides it is like i said about people saying tbaum is hiring fools to give him all the contorl. i doubt philbin was going along playing a qb he didnt like and believe in so he could just waddle in mediocrity just to get fired.

  90. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

tell ya what, i can see what all the talk is now about that wilson midget. he is fucking fantastic. how he has totally shut down the vikings offense. then comes up with that magical strip of peterson to get the go ahead score. i tell you the way that wilson guy plays defense his team is always in it

Philbin still showed no ability to use his players to the best of their abilities or to develop talent. He also showed no ability to be able to handle different personalities. That won’t get you far in this league and he found out the hard way.
