The Wedge Scouting Report: LB, Scooby Wright III

The one thing I like about Earth is the ability of your canines to solve mysteries that your human police cannot solve.   Especially Haunted Mysteries!

SPOOKY!

Scooby Wright is Great Dane from Arizona who’s best friend is a stoner who eats dog food with him.  He is also hangs out with a hot redhead named Daphne and two other people I barely notice.  Scooby is known for his tenacity on the field and in haunted mansions.

I may be blending my Scoobies together…

photo 2

The point is:  Scooby Wright can play football…um and solve mysteries…

The legend of Scooby Wright really picked up in 2014.  Zoinks!!! Get a load of these numbers.  In 2014 Scooby had 14 sacks, 163 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss and 6 forced fumbles.

Opposing offenses in 2014 were heard saying “Like…Heeelpppp” every time Scooby was near.  That’s because Scooby in one of the most aggressive linebackers in college football.  He flies around the field showing incredible lateral quickness and a nonstop motor!

photo 1

What a ham…why is Scooby so aggressive?  Because he can be!  Scooby seems  to have the unique knack of reading a play before its gets going and destroying it.  He makes more big plays than most defensive players in college do and he makes a ton of big hits bringing the ball carrier down.

This guy is flat out Scrappy (Doo)!

Creepers!!!  Some people are really not enthusiastic about his size.  Ironically Scooby has drawn a few comparisons to a Dolphins great – Zach Thomas.  But he is much bigger than Zach.  I’ve also seen him compared to Clay Matthews.  I’m not sure if Scooby plays inside or outside at the next level – but those are impressive comparisons.

photo 4

But the one thing that scares people about Scooby is a lack of lower body strength.  He also missed a majority of the 2015 season with nagging injuries.  Like Wow…His 2015 season was nowhere near as productive as his 2014 season.

That said, its hard not to notice the groovy impact Scooby has when he is on the field.  He reads the play and attacks – disrupting the play like a blue chip playmaker.  Gangway!!!

And Scooby has a real mean streak too!

photo 3

Arizona actually plays a 3-3-5 defense.  The wildcats did not do a very good job eating up blocks up front by playing 3 down linemen and 5 defensive backs as a base defense.  Scooby did a great job of getting around blockers and making plays despite little support up front.

If it wasn’t for those meddling offensive lineman up front, he would be an unstoppable force – but he did struggle shedding blocks from time to time.  But if Scooby was playing behind Suh and Phillips, I think his strengths are highlighted and his tenacity would make Dolfans smile every week.

Wright

By the way his real name is Phillip.  If Phillip was an alien weapon of destruction, he would be a Galactic Buzzsaw.

BZZZZZZZ

BZZZZZZZZZZ

I’m gonna cut through your spaceship and destroy you!

I tend to think little Gronk is going to be a FB at the next level

    Provided the position still exists…lol
    ———————————————–
I dont know if he will be a TE or a FB, i was just saying he is going to play TE at Senior Bowl, most likely to open some doors for consideration at that position if possible. If he did, he’d likely be a Clay kinda guy, as his skill set seems to more reflect that hybrid HB/FB/TE type. Flexibility is going to be key for his draft position.

Nice job piggy. I’ve seen scooby play live and he’s pretty impressive. I would be bery happy if we picked him but not in first.

Don’t discount Peyton liked Gase. He felt on the same page with him. They set records together. Gase was OC when Peyton started in Denver. He gets no credit for that, but asst. coaches get credited or blamed for position performance? LOL
    ———————————————————————
I dont necessarily credit the success on Gase, but what i do know is the fact that Peyton really petitioned to keep him, and the support he has shown for him says to me he is very collaborative with the players, and thats avery good especially for Tanny. I dont think you can credit the immense success in Denver on him, and not the comparatively bad results in Chicago on him, i think those both have alot to do with what he had to work with, but he does seem to get the most out of what he works with. Cutler was a lot better under him, he also went to the second round of the playoffs with Tebow. There has to be some credit given to him in that capacity.

I know Tim is worries about his height, im assuming because of leverage battles, but there are a lot of players that have good enough technique to use the size to their advantage and minimize it being used against them. He is someone im interested to see if the hype is real or not.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m glad he’s less than 6-8. I heard he was 6-9 and there just aren’t that many 6-9 guys in the NFL.

Had a few that i think wanted Mark Ingram. I wasnt one of them of course….

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But we didn’t draft him. I’m talking about prospects most of us were okay with that we did land. The only 1st rd picks that came with a lot of criticism that I remember was trading down and passing on potentially Earl Thomas for Odrick/Misi and trading up for Fuckface.

Our 1st round picks have been pretty good, It’s the rest of the draft that we haven’t hit on enough special with the exception of Landry.

Mike, yeah it was the OL coach that was the problem in NE. Didn’t they constantly say the Pats used like 47 different lineups during the season. They made it to the championship game and they fire the guy. It was nice to see that without support even Brady boy has a tough time.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    No. 1: QB Carson Wentz

    School: North Dakota State

Analysis: All eyes this week will be on Wentz, who is a small-school product but is generating a lot of buzz in the scouting community. There are two clear first-round quarterbacks in this draft in Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch. However, some believe Wentz has the tools to be the third first-round quarterback taken in April’s draft. But he must have a strong pre-draft process and that starts this week at the Senior Bowl. The Dolphins will not look for a quarterback in the first round with starter Ryan Tannehill already in place. But Wentz could be someone to keep an eye on if he’s available in the second round.

  29. D's avatar D says:

    Crazy story!

In 1972, Tom Walker while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico, helped Roberto Clemente load a plane carrying relief supplies to survivors of a massive earthquake in Nicaragua after Christmas. He offered to accompany Clemente on the trip to the Central American nation, but the plane was full and Clemente told him to stay behind and enjoy his New Year’s Eve. A few hours later, Tom returned to his condo and saw the news reports that Clemente’s plane had crashed off the coast of Isla Verde, Puerto Rico; he probably would have died in the crash if it weren’t for Clemente’s decision. Tom is current Mets 2B Neil Walker’s father. Neil would have never been.

    D
Oakmans ability shouldn’t be in question!

His problem is he has a reputation for taking plays off!

    *****
    If you might recall
Jordan Phillips had the same reputation
And that turned out to be bs

It seems to be every time some one is a great athlete
And not dominant on every play
The say he doesn’t work hard or takes plays off

The thing about Oakman is he does have talent
And it doesn’t always show in the field

It might just be an issue with lacking technique rather than laziness or taking plays off

He’s probably one of those athletes that have relied on being a great athlete

The other thing about taking plays off is – That Baylor defense is probably in the field much more than most defenses
Bc that offense doesn’t hold the ball long
It’s not a vey fair sampling to compare a Baylor DE to a big ten DE in terms of how much time they spend on the field

I bet every defender in ncaa would get a little tired of they played for Baylor
And that might be perceived to be taking plays off too

    oakman has his shortcomings
But Im always skeptical about the “he takes plays off” criticism

There are some scouting reports that address technique
Which is probably more of an issue

    He’s a 2nd or 3rd round pick
    That’s where he should be

He’s not a complete football player right now
But he has potential to be

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I don’t think he is one of the top tear guys!
But top of the second tier is were I’d put him?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Me too
        He’s not 1st rounder

But then again – I would say the same about Phillips last year or Vernon years ago

he can be a quality NFL player
I’m not sure he will ever be an elite pass rusher

That’s the type of player I hope we target, guys who are versatile and not just one trick ponies.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We’re likely targeting him, as Grier says they want to go physical with their selections.
Need more physical players. That was evident by seeing our defense regress so much & the OL not imposing it’s will. Something that was supposed to be Turner’s strength.

  51. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Sorry to see Dbolt is boycotting cause someone here rubbed him the wrong way.

  52. D's avatar D says:

Sources with multiple teams that Florida’s Keanu Neal could be in the running to be the first safety selected, if you count Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey as a cornerback. Neal has impressed teams with his combination of size and speed. A team picking high in the second round that could consider a safety said that there is the possibility that Neal could go in the late first. They believe he is going to be a Combine standout who could become a hot prospect. Teams also really like Neal off the field.

Oviously i like Neal but Marcus Maye was the Gators ball hawk safety. Neal has really good coverage skills but his strongest attribute is tackling. He will be great in run defense and will get a lot of FF’s because he will light a guy up across the middle. I like him as a late 2nd early 3rd guy.

  53. D's avatar D says:

Also sounds like the smokescreen game has started for Conner Cook. He’s being painted as a locker room cancer/bad teammate. People are starting to sour on him it seems. I guess they will figure it out when they do the combine interviews, but there were some people saying he really screwed up not taking the opportunity to come to Senior Bowl to at least combat the rumors that are swirling there about him.

  55. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

WGN Radio’s Adam Hoge reports it is ‘very possible’ Bears LT Jermon Bushrod is released this offseason.
ESPN’s Jeff Dickerson had a similar report in December. 24-year-old Charles Leno took over at left tackle after Bushrod went down with a shoulder injury Week 3 and never looked back. The Bears can save $4.3 million against the cap by releasing Bushrod.

Tim, I hear ya. It’s a QB starved league & why teams are always willing to reach early.
Even more the reason we should be glad we got Tannehill & get behind him!
I’m glad to see the FO is doing just that with the Gase hire & his staff.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Gase and Christensen can’t help Tanny reach his highest potential than it’s on him. Not saying that without fortifying the OL, do that and we should be a good offense. We have weapons in the passing game and those two coaches get offense.

@AbramsonPBP: Southern Utah DB Miles Killebrew says he’s met with a lot of teams but had an in-depth talk with #Dolphins. “I really liked those guys.”

  85. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

@AbramsonPBP: #Dolphins have also met with Stanford G Josh Garnett and Florida-turned-Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskell at Senior Bowl

@AbramsonPBP: Ohio State WR Braxton Miller says he’s met with the #Dolphins at Senior Bowl

@AbramsonPBP: Tannenbaum doesn’t say whether Miko will play a factor in if Grimes returns but says the team looks at the player first

which is the way it should be

I’m in the keep Grimes camp (although I would love to renegotiate his contract

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

That’s the only way I’d keep Grimes. He has to think team first & take a pay cut.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’m in the ship him and Tito Tits to the Amazon….even at a reduced contract😂 Give me Trumaine Johnson instead.

  88. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Bolt, Killebrew is intriguing, but not early as he’s projected.
He’s a big boy tho, 6’3 230, so maybe Phins are seeking a Cam Chancellor type…lol
But his speed isn’t all that & we have Reshad Jones.
But it does indicate that Grier was telling the truth that they want to go a more physical route with players.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yep…..I think the most important thing is for Grier to land 2 very large & physical OGs to offset the three finess guys in our OL. I still think Turner will be fine. Thought he was playing solid ball before James went down & he was saddled next to Fox.

Scooby Wrights game vs UNM was damn impressive seeing he was coming off injury: 15tckls(11solo), 3-1/2 TFL’s, & 2 sacks. I told Piggy the other day on Twitter I’d try to land Jack or Ragland in round 1 & pick him up in round 2 or 3. Also like K. Brothers as a MLB prospect.

    agreed
Jack and Wright in 1 draft is the thing of Piggy dreams

Thank you everyone. Really appreciate it!
Needless to say I probably won;t have too much time to blog the next few weeks.

Dbolt, I would not be surprised if Gase and Christensen want to utilize Cameron more than Lazor did. It wasn’t a TE friendly offense in the passing game under Lazor. He had Cameron blocking a lot which is not his best skill. Gase’s and Christensen’s history utilizes TEs more.

I don’t think we can focus completely on last year’s results. Lazor was a weirdo OC. LOL

  92. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Bolt, yeah, give me some mean OG’s that got some ass in them….lol
Some big boy’s can zone block & pull on occasion too. That’s where Gase will know when to call those plays, when he sees they are not gassed.

I’ll take the space eaters people can’t run around. Give me Denver Kirkland from Arkansas as a rookie & Brandon Brooks as a vet.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I hear ya on Kirkland, but Brooks is a RG mostly & we have Turner.
Give me Ramon Foster the LG from the Steelers in FA.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

That can work also. In regards to Brooks, Ud bring him in and start training Turner at LT to prepare to eventually take over for Albert. Gives you a capable swing tackle.
