The Wedge Scouting Report: LB, Scooby Wright III

The one thing I like about Earth is the ability of your canines to solve mysteries that your human police cannot solve.   Especially Haunted Mysteries!

SPOOKY!

Scooby Wright is Great Dane from Arizona who’s best friend is a stoner who eats dog food with him.  He is also hangs out with a hot redhead named Daphne and two other people I barely notice.  Scooby is known for his tenacity on the field and in haunted mansions.

I may be blending my Scoobies together…

photo 2

The point is:  Scooby Wright can play football…um and solve mysteries…

The legend of Scooby Wright really picked up in 2014.  Zoinks!!! Get a load of these numbers.  In 2014 Scooby had 14 sacks, 163 tackles, 29 tackles for a loss and 6 forced fumbles.

Opposing offenses in 2014 were heard saying “Like…Heeelpppp” every time Scooby was near.  That’s because Scooby in one of the most aggressive linebackers in college football.  He flies around the field showing incredible lateral quickness and a nonstop motor!

photo 1

What a ham…why is Scooby so aggressive?  Because he can be!  Scooby seems  to have the unique knack of reading a play before its gets going and destroying it.  He makes more big plays than most defensive players in college do and he makes a ton of big hits bringing the ball carrier down.

This guy is flat out Scrappy (Doo)!

Creepers!!!  Some people are really not enthusiastic about his size.  Ironically Scooby has drawn a few comparisons to a Dolphins great – Zach Thomas.  But he is much bigger than Zach.  I’ve also seen him compared to Clay Matthews.  I’m not sure if Scooby plays inside or outside at the next level – but those are impressive comparisons.

photo 4

But the one thing that scares people about Scooby is a lack of lower body strength.  He also missed a majority of the 2015 season with nagging injuries.  Like Wow…His 2015 season was nowhere near as productive as his 2014 season.

That said, its hard not to notice the groovy impact Scooby has when he is on the field.  He reads the play and attacks – disrupting the play like a blue chip playmaker.  Gangway!!!

And Scooby has a real mean streak too!

photo 3

Arizona actually plays a 3-3-5 defense.  The wildcats did not do a very good job eating up blocks up front by playing 3 down linemen and 5 defensive backs as a base defense.  Scooby did a great job of getting around blockers and making plays despite little support up front.

If it wasn’t for those meddling offensive lineman up front, he would be an unstoppable force – but he did struggle shedding blocks from time to time.  But if Scooby was playing behind Suh and Phillips, I think his strengths are highlighted and his tenacity would make Dolfans smile every week.

Wright

By the way his real name is Phillip.  If Phillip was an alien weapon of destruction, he would be a Galactic Buzzsaw.

BZZZZZZZ

BZZZZZZZZZZ

I’m gonna cut through your spaceship and destroy you!

  1. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Tim,
Misi is far from the “tacking machine” we need, as Steve put it. He’s an average LB and will likely be nothing more. We need to draft a dynamic playmaker at ILB, ala Zach. Those defenses wouldn’t have been anywhere close to as good without him back there.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The only LB I don’t hate on our roster is Jenkins

We need a serious upgrade in talent at LB
If we expected guys like Misi, Hewitt and Vigil to play big roles in 2016, then this defense just won’t be very good

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Misi was loved by Philbin, once a real evaluator takes a look at the film he’ll be cut.

  2. Dloxahatchee's avatar dcoralsprings says:

Phins to restructure Suh, save approx. 18 mill this season
Expect to be very active in this years F/A
    Source Mando

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Brian

Agreed man! Misi should be depth, not one of our starters. He’s been here for 7 years, and he still hasn’t done anything. Bench depth player, or cut.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t hate our LB’s, it’s just pretty clear that besides Jenkins, there’s not an impact player there. Maybe Vigil and Hewitt have a chance, but I’m not relying on that. We need a major upgrade at the LB position.

  5. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I like Misi and he’s a good SOLB WHEN HEALTHY. The problem is he’s always hurt. Part of the value of a player is being available week in & week out. His history has shown you can’t depend on his health….similar to Albert.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Exactly! As far as Misi’s concerned he’s OK. Has never been an impact player though.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’ll give Misi credit where it’s due…when healthy he’s a good SOLB. When he hits a guy, they’re stopped in their tracks. Sounds like a guy in pads running into a brick wall. As I said though his limited availability makes him a liability to the team.

  6. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Right now I think Miami could take a flyer on Sean Spence in the middle and pickup a Myles Jack/Ragland in round 1 and perhaps Jenkins from UGA as a SOLB in RD 2 or 3.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I’d also try to restructure Misi as he’s a good locker room guy and is still a quality player. He provides knowledge at DE, OLB, and MLB for multiple schemes. Good mentor type guy.

  7. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

He’s NEVER had a 100 tackles, he has 1 INT, and 2 FF’s in 6 seasons. Like I said, that’s not an impact player.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D-Bolt

So my question is, do you keep Misi penciled as a starter, or do you try and upgrade? I’d prefer to upgrade.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Oh, you def. draft a guy who’s can take over for him which is why I mentioned it above. Misi would start off as a starter, but the rook eventually replaces him. I don’t think this staff will hinder the young guys progress like Philbin & Co. I hope not at least.

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Brian, where did I say Misi was a tackling machine? I was just mentioning who we have at LB and where to start off and then add competition. You can’t go into a season with no LBs and start with all new. It’s possible Misi gets asked to take a pay cut or he could even be released.

  10. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I keep forgetting I’m going to the Senior Bowl this weekend. Shouldn’t I be more excited? I don’t follow college football so I don’t know the players or who I should follow. Maybe I’ll get giddy when I get up on Saturday morning.

I’m actually warming up to the idea of drafting Reggie Ragland

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I like him as a MLB a lot. Won’t be as flashy as Jack or Smith, but you won’t see him overrun plays and miss assignments.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’ll likely become a core player for any team who drafts him. He can also rush the passer a bit.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yeah, Tim. He’s just a guy that will get the job done and make your excellent in time. I like him better than any recent Alabama defensive player.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    SB

It’s probably better on TV. Are you going to the practices too, or just the game itself?

  14. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

    SB,
Get hammered…..I mean Lindsey Lohan hammered and then comeback & describe the one helmet you actually can focus on within the field of play.

  15. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I already bought the tickets, but I’ve found myself trying to make other plans for the weekend and I’m like crap! I’m doing the senior bowl this weekend! It’s been a busy January. Can’t believe it’s almost February.
I think in general I tend not to get excited about anything until it’s actually happening. It’s not so much of a not wanting to go, just how I usually handle things. One day at a time like Schneider.

  18. D's avatar D says:

So far im hearing the big names at Senior Bowl as far as performances is Jarran Reed, Sebastian Treolta (ive mocked him a few times to us, he’s the OG next to Denver Kirkland) , Carson Wentz.

Jarran Reed and Treolta have been battling hard on one-on-ones and im haring Treolta has only been beaten by Reed when he over stepped his block. They said he’s like a rock against power rush, can not be moved. Reed is grading out as the best DT in practice though they have a couple other guys really impressing including a couple smaller school guys. Im thinking Treolta, who i have generally seen as a 3-4th round guy might be moving up a round.

Wentz they say hasnt been overall just perection, but he has stood out on the field and is leading the team well. I have heard his most impressive characteristic so far has been the fact that he has come out with a group of guys he has never plaed with before and he is running them like its HIS team. Getting them into position, barking out orders, and just really managing things. They say you cant deny his leadership skills if you are watching him.

I heard Nassib, Spence, and Nicolas all looking pretty solid. They did say Nicolas size hurts him some but he is really quick and likely could survive in the NFL off his speed moves, but he would still need to put on a little muscle. They said when a OL gets in on him its over. Havent heard much about Oakman so far. Tapper had a couple nice plays, he’s a guy im looking at as a second DE taken in a later round.

Another CB i have thought about as a later round guy, and someone we could use as a returner, Cyrus Jones looked decent, seems raw as far as biting on double moves or losing a step on receiver who run really crisp routes, but they said on those plays he recovered from them really quickly, and that his speed in general allows for him to run with all the receivers pretty easily.

    • D's avatar D says:

A guy who suprisingly isnt impressing is Vadal Alexander. Seems concensus with him is no way he is able to handle playing on the outside in the NFL, and will have to move inside. He may fall a bit in the draft.

  19. D's avatar D says:

Adolphus Washington (who coincidentally almost has the word dolphin in his name lol) has been playing at DT in practices, doing ok, i think more was expected of him flashing but he hasnt really. Vernon Butler they said looks really good, he’s the LaTech DT, Al had mentioned the other day.

I guess i also didnt recognize Spence was a former Ohio State player kicked off the team for multiple issues with illegal drugs. He is a disruptive force is what im hearing but a lot of concerns about him off field.

I’m actually warming up to the idea of drafting Reggie Ragland
    —————————————
I have 0 doubts about him in run defense. We will have to see pass defense how he looks playing OLB this week. I wouldnt draft him at 8 though. I wouldnt draft Jack at 8 unless he seems completely recovered by combine.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, are you at the Senior Bowl?

    • D's avatar D says:

Im at work but i have been talking to my friend who is there and asking him about a few players, well more than a few this year. He is probably tired of talking to me by now lol.

      • D's avatar D says:

Practices are wrapping up by time i get off work. Im going Friday though to the player/coaches meet and greet and the game, including the pre game events.

  22. D's avatar D says:

IMO these are the players im looking for at 8. Hargreaves, Ramsey and Tunsil. Any of the three are there, i make my pick. Otherwise im trading back and looking for Jack, Ragland, Stanley, Nkemdiche, Lawson, Bullard or Alexander. I feel good enough about this years group i would trade back into the first for a second first round selection as well, possibly even willing to give up a future first for a current first.

  23. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

It just occurred to me, there must have been a Scooby Wright and a Scooby Wright Jr. Seriously, Scooby as a name? For a person? And then you go on and name your kid that? And then he does the same thing? Not to mention you had to talk 3 women into naming their baby that. I’m not so sure about this whole thing. 😉

  24. D's avatar D says:

Mike, ya know the only thing that doesnt make Tunsil an automatic for me to choose over a guy like Hargreaves and Ramsey, is the simple fact that i think it pushes us too far back on our first defensive picks. Otherwise i think Tunsil is the higher value pick of the bunch.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Tunsil will be there at #8. History tells us the top tackles always go top 5.

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree, im doing a “what if”. Was just saying earlier, when im doing mock drafts thats what always presents the biggest conundrum for me is when i have Tunsil as an option along with a guy like Hargreaves or Ramsey.

Jason Spriggs/T/Indiana continues to impress. Have to believe he’s cemented himself as a late first rounder.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    D

Yeah, I totally understand that. It’s almost like a luxury pick (Tunsil), but not really. We do need to fix the defense, but we also have to fix that damn O-line too.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Our starting tackles are not the issue though.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, yes and no. The fact that Albert started slow because injury, and then James went down killed us. Fox killed us at LT and then at RT. So, yeah, the starting T’s were the issue, and then the depth was the issue.

Nick Martin/C/Notre Dame continues to impress. Handled Austin Johnson/Penn State on consecutive snaps.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s a guy we could target as a C/G. He could compete with Douglas as the backup center and the loser focuses mainly at guard. He would be a great pick in the 3rd rd but may not fall that far.

MAX TUERK out of USC is who I like as a C/OG He’s played gaurd before!

Martin would be a good pick if we have no intention of keeping Pouncey!

  30. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I’m talking about talent with our tackles. So every time a player has a season where he gets injured, we draft that position the next year just in case it happens again? James will be in his 3rd year and Albert played in 14 games last year. I’ve said many times we need to address depth at tackle but we should do it in FA with a proven player. It shouldn’t be hard to upgrade over Fox.

  31. D's avatar D says:

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 8: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida (A)
Round 2 Pick 11: Kevin Dodd, DE, Clemson (A)
Round 3 Pick 10: Deion Jones, OLB, LSU (A)
Round 4 Pick 9: Sebastian Tretola, OG, Arkansas (A-)
Round 5 Pick 8: Nick Vigil, ILB, Utah State (A-)
    Round 6 Pick 11: Austin Blythe, C, Iowa (A-)
Round 7 Pick 6: Wendell Smallwood, RB, West Virginia (A+)
    Round 7 Pick 10: D.J. Reader, DT, Clemson (A-)

  32. D's avatar D says:

Im eally not blown away by Nick Martin. I think some of you guys are getting hung up on who is brother is. He isnt his brother, who was easily one of the most NFL ready guys i have seen drafted recently. Like would be on our team too if the Cowboys didnt take him.

  33. D's avatar D says:

Im a lot more concerned with our situation at OT than you are Tim. Im a lot close to the way Mike feels. Our depth is horrible. Our stability at the position has been horrible. We have to get stabilized, because no matter how talented we are at the OT position it doesnt do us any good if they are on the IR.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s circumstantial though. Nobody knew Albert was going to get his knee rolled up on in 2014, and nobody knew James would get turf toe that would linger all year. Guys get hurt in the NFL, look at the season how many injuries there were. I agree on depth at tackle, I’ve said we need to address that many times.

That said, we have people here who want top spend a 2nd rd pick on an injured LB who may or may not play in 2016 at some point, but guys we already have on our team we need to replace because they got hurt. http://www.hamaraforums.com/style_emoticons/default/confused.gif

  34. D's avatar D says:

Thats draft i did above may be my lightest on the SEC talent draft ever lol.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      its a pretty good draft
I see what you are trying to do with the Vigil bros
maybe we will end up being “the Killer Vs”?

  35. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Wyo, why would we move Pouncey, we just extended him too?

  36. D's avatar D says:

Ya mean Scooby Tim? I definitely dont see second rounder for him.

  37. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So I go to do one of those “free” credit checks. If any of you guys are interested, my credit is OK but not great….mainly cause I have no debt and no credit cards.

Yeah they asked for a card number (debit in my case) for whatever reason, but it was probably a trial offer thing that kicked into you pay for a year (my fault there). I call up cause the next year’s charge shows up on my bill and they tell me two things.

1 — “you sure….we’ll give you next year at half-price” and
2 — “as a courtesy we will let you access your account until Jan 16, 2016.”

Nice courtesy……..I’d already paid for the year of the MF-er.

  38. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I actually didn’t know not having a credit card actually hurts your credit?

its probably should be the opposite
but I guess banks control the rating system….so….

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah because they have no record of you paying stuff off so they don’t know you as a potential customer.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Yeah
but they can still see your net worth
        and your income
and then paired with the fact that you have no debt bc you don’t have a credit card

        that kinda should be A+

      • D's avatar D says:

Not how they view it. I made the same arguments to a credit evaluation place once and they basically called me naive and sent me on my way.

    • D's avatar D says:

They see it as a person who will be unlikely to manage their revolving debt, therefore less attractive to a lender. I agree with ya Piggy i face this shit every day. I have never had a CCD and it haunts me. Lucklily i have had car loans now, and house loans, and store lines of revolving credit like Lowes, etc. Its taken me 10 times as long to become viable, never having less than a 750 score, than it would if i had had credit cards all along and lets say a 650 score. Dont know how many times early one i heard the phrase, “denied due to insufficient credit history”.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

First car I ever bought on my own I walked in with 15K of cash I’d won off Donald Trump (or at least his casino in AC). I was mid-twenties. Salesman said, you should just take out the loan for the full amount and there is no prepayment penalty…..just put the 15 thousand in as part of your first payment. It will help your credit rating.

I was real wary of car salesmen, but he was right even if I didn’t listen. Big part of your credit rating is money borrowed and then payed back, including how much.

      • D's avatar D says:

It would have helped even more if you had takent the 15k put it in an account, and made payments off it each month. How long the line of credit is open also helps you. You woulda paid more for the car of course, so you would have to weight that out with how much you want your credit helped.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D — I wouldn’t even listen to that guy. At that point had exactly zero appreciation for what a credit rating was worth. Did know care salesman and finance managers at dealerships were shady though. Just turned out this guy was trying to do me a solid.

  39. D's avatar D says:

I think the difference with us Tim is i really dont think its circumstantial i think its due to durability. I think on any given play you could have incedental contact that for some comes out to an injury and to others its a bruise. I think Albert is at a higher likelihood of injury because of this. Its the only way you can explain why some players make it through entire careers without injury and others do not. Im not taking for granted that all players can get injured at any time. Im just saying that on if any play the average chance for a player to get hurt is say 1%, Alberts is probably 3%. Odds are a player with injury history is more likely to get hurt than one that doesnt, thats fact, so when you we are just as safe with Albert as anyone, thats just not logically accurate.

  40. D's avatar D says:

Piggy another thing that hurts credit that you may not know about is having a CCD and not having some sort of balance on it very month. Literally you start to lose points on your credit score if you never show a balance on a card. Best way they say to prevent it and actually build credit is charge 2-300 on it every month, let it roll over to billable and then pay it off before the deadline. Its counter-intuitive but its how it works. You are supposed to be a good credit risk if you have at least one major loan (car, house, etc) 2 CCD’s that are active and stay paid up, and not marks from other agencies like utilities, etc. You want to have some amount of your revolving credit used, btu most of it available because you dont want to get in a low available credit position either.

  41. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“Its taken me 10 times as long to become viable, never having less than a 750 score”

D — About 750 is what my score is. So yours is better than mine.

    • D's avatar D says:

Yeah ut even having the same score, yours is better because you have a better credit history. I still get flak sometimes when applying for something, score needs to be high but they look at those other factors and weight them heavier than the score itself.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

D – I haven’t had any kinda credit in like eight years. And I don’t have a job either. Don’t have any of the down things though. So guess it depends on what you are talking about.

      • D's avatar D says:

Ah, well maybe your might be like mine then, at some point those history items purge off your report so by now you might look like me lol.

  43. D's avatar D says:

Lol, a lot of times applying for credit with no CCD’s on my history is like a bargaining meet, having to barter my good credit points against the lack of history. I was the same, i mean i really never had a desire for having a CCD. I also saw a lot of friends mismanage theirs. I didnt appreciate it until it slapped me in the face when i decided to buy my first car and then reared its head again when i went to buy my first house.

I’m actually warming up to the idea of drafting Reggie Ragland
    —–
Until the Patriots drag Gronkowski over the middle on a short slant route and he takes it to the house for 80 yards cause Ragland is slow.

Could be that good depth move & future LT if he’s still around in the 3rd or better yet 4th round.

Teams that got instant big production at MLB out of last year’s draft:

    Saints: Stephone Anthony (Clemson)
    Pre-draft variables: 6’2-5/8″, 243 lbs, 23 bench reps, 4.56s 40yd, 1.57s 10yd, 37″ vert, 10′-02″ broad jump, 7.07s 3-cone, 4.03s 20yd shuttle.

    Bucaneers: Kwon Alexander (LSU)
    Pre-draft variables: 6’0-6/8″, 227 lbs, 24 bench reps, 4.55s 40yd, 1.58s 10yd, 36″ vert, 10′-01″ broad jump, 7.14s 3-cone, 4.20s 20yd shuttle.

I might as well mention Denzel Perryman because he really closed out the season on a strong note after not doing much the first half of the season (injured peck in late Oct as a reserve player; got his first start in Week 6 i think then injured 2 weeks later). He started games after like week 11 or 12 and hit the 10 tackles in a game mark twice in the last 4 weeks of the season.

He looks to handle coverage OK, id expect him to have more problems with RB’s on coverage than TE’s as physically i think he bumps and runs with them ok. Gronk for example really isnt overly fast, he is physical, he runs great routes and TBH New England just uses him really well.

Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and will always struggle to win a locker room . . . Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness — is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable.”

  91. D's avatar D says:

I dont think i was as negative towards Cam as Nawrocki but i definitely agreed with the jest of what he was saying which is he shows a lot of immaturity, he tries to do everything himself because he doesn’t respect the other players enough to let them help carry the load. He does have an ego for sure, but so do a lot of other players. The rest, i dunno i didn’t really see that. This of course is who he was in years one and two. Year two, Steve Smith had that moment with him and i really think things started turning around from there. He still has a little bit to go but like Mike said, i think he’s getting it and thats good on him because it could have kept going the other way if he hadn’t humbled himself some and straighted some of his personal shit out. His brush with death probably helped some too.

    • D's avatar D says:

    —————————————–
I dont agree with that report either, but i will say what he was claiming is part of a football critique. Its biased, you can tell with the passion eh wrote it, he didnt care at all for Newton, but if i thought a guy came off as a prick in an interview or whatnot, id probably include it in a scouting report. If i thought he would be a team cancer, id put it in there, if i thought he wouldn’t be focused or committed to being a professional, id put it in. Those are parts of a football critique, because its a team sport and not having a team player lead your franchise is a very bad thing.

  94. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think what Nawrocki was saying is that Cam was an immature ass. He probably was, and now he’s grown up. That doesn’t make what he said wrong at the time though. Why all that was in a scouting report is odd, but I guess he felt pretty strongly about that. I’d like to see the whole report though, it looks worse when you just pull that part out.

There is not a lot of QBs who won championships in college and in the pros
I don’t know if he wins the Super Bowl
but if he does, he is in an elite class of QBs to win at both levels

So the fact that a scout was questioning his leadership and whether he is liked in the lockerroom even before he was drafted is very suspect

I don’t think Cam newton’s is suddenly getting it

    He was successful in college
    and now in the pros

    he is a good QB
he has faced a lot of unfair criticism IMO and that has shaped this “ego” criticism

but if a guy wins in college – usually the sentiment should be that he is a string lockeroom presence – not what Cam received

I think double standards in sports, especially when the approach racial issues, are hard truths to face
but I defiantely think Newton is a great example of double standards

    • D's avatar D says:
