The Wedge Scouting Report: LB Jaylon Smith

I can’t believe it!  Just my Velusian Luck!

I was getting ready to blow a little moon with a photon bomb and all of the sudden OUCH!!!!

Now look at me…

Wedgebrkenarm

My arm’s in a sling.  I’m out of commission.

Maybe I was pressing myself to eliminate too many lifeforms.

Luckily, I have been studying Earth enough to learn about their medicine.

Those Earthlings might be as dumb as Beam Beetles, but they do know how to fix everything fast!

ductWD40

Just apply a little duct tape here and a little WD-40 and I’m back in action destroying the parts of universe I don’t like!

Now look at me!

Back in Action!!!

WedgeCelerate

Speaking of injuries…how could this happen to Jaylon Smith!

And at the worst time in the Fiesta Bowl!

JaylonSmithInjury

If you don’t know by now, Jaylon Smith, considered by many to be the best linebacker in the country tore his ACL in the final game of his college career.

What bad luck.

This guy was a top 10 pick in the NFL Draft.  Before the injury Jaylon Smith could do it all.

JaylonSmith5

He can tackle, he can cover, he can rush the passer.  He can do it all!

He was the most athletic defender in a very good Notre Dame defense in 2015.

So what now, Smith?

Do you go back to Notre Dame and play late in the college season to show people you still have it…

NOPE not Jaylon Smith, he declared for the NFL draft soon after the Fiesta Bowl.

JaylonSmith2

And that’s just the type of move I expect from such an aggressive defender.

Smith has all the traits you like to see in a linebacker:

Aggression, Aggression and of course Aggression!!!

It’s that aggression that that helped Smith tally 126 tackles over the last two years.

And he is versatile.  He can play inside or outside at the NFL level.

JaylonSmith3

He’s got a little pop to him every time he tackles down the carrier.

Smith is like a missile when he diagnoses the play.

Here’s how I imagine his brain works:

1.  There is the Ball Carrier

2. BOOOOOOOOOOOM!

JalyonSmith4

Some people suggest that Smith needs to gain weight and is a little light for the position at about 235 LBs.

I tell those humans that the linebacker position is changing in the NFL and requires linebackers that move well more than anything else.

And Smith can MOVE!

JaylonSmith6

Smith is bound to be the kind of linebacker to excel in the modern day NFL in this alien’s opinion.  Unfortunately, the injury is going to push him down some draft boards.

Some team is going to get a defensive stud, if they are just patient.

Can Jaylon Smith be the next Todd Gurley coming back from a major injury to make an immediate impact in the NFL.

Hmmmmm…let’s see…a little duct tape here a little WD-40 there.

I think he will be fine in the NFL!!!

If Jaylon Smith was an Alien Weapon of Destruction.  He would be the Mythical Unstoppable Earth Cure of Legends!!!

JaylonSmithFix it

Check out some of his highlights!

But but, coach says he really likes me….lol
I just read the article. I say hell NO to $6M per. Hell, former 1st rd pick Reggie Nelson got $4.5M and led the league with 8 INT’s. Maybe Iloka helped him get all those picks. 😉
Plus the Miami Herald is saying the Phins will pursue him or Pacman, sooo.

I want to know what Joseph & Burke think of Vincent Rey & Emmanuel Lamur
    ——————————————
Brining Pacman to Miami is like pulling the pin on a grenade and then shoving it down your pants.

Rey Maualuga is also a potential cut for the Bengals so maybe he’s a LB they will target if that happens.

    • D's avatar D says:

The points they are making are valid but the clips they are showing dont represent what they are saying they do. The clip in the KY game was great play design, it was a pickplak where the receiver had crossing routes picking interfereing with Hargreaves running with him, the safety on that play (which im pretty sure was Neal) played too aggressive and instead of jumping the route was out of position on the play and also got so close he tripped hargreaves up leaving the receiver at the perfect spot. KY’s QB should be credited for making Neal play that early and then throwing a perfect pass in the perfect spot of the route.

There are tons of other sources that will say that Hargreaves wears the receivers like a suit and does not get beat deep. Against Amari Cooper, who is possible one of the best overall route runners and one of the best at creating separation, Hargreaves battled him all day and on routes that Cooper was covered by Hargreaves an not the safety, he didnt get much of anything. He was indeed the only CB to truly keep Cooper in check that year.

His size at pretty close to 5’11 is not short, there are a lot of CB’s at his height that are very successful. Darrell Revis for example is exactly the same height weight combination as Hargreaves. I know this guy as good as anyone here, i have seen him over his entire career and despite my UF fandom, i can say i think he is a long time star at CB for us if selected.

      • D's avatar D says:

He is very agressive, that part is true, but when you have the safeties that UF had, capable of handling their business, you play that way to create turnovers and help an anemic offense get more shots with better field position.

Mike E, two starting LBs and a starting CB from the draft? All as rookies?

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we could get one starting LB and one starting CB from the raft for sure, i dont know if we walk away with two without limiting the talent we get at the DE position.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Not impossible….tough…..not impossible. Technically we had 2 UDFA rookies start at LB, 2 rookies who started at CB, 1 rookie OG who started at OG & C, and a rookie WR who started at the end of the year. I did not mention results😂

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Considering what we have currently on the roster, not too formidable a task.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not impossible but not common. Usually one of them will have a bigger learning curve and need more time. Unless you really did nail it.

  4. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Rang still has us picking VH:

    8. Miami Dolphins: Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida
Despite fielding one of the more gifted defensive lines in the NFL, the Dolphins surrendered 31 passing touchdowns in 2015, more than any team which made the playoffs. Brent Grimes was the only cornerback to intercept a pass for Miami last year. The Dolphins won’t have to look far for a playmaker with Hargreaves, a three-time All-SEC pick, recording 10 interceptions for the Gators over his career.

  5. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

When I read the comments that the “experts” make when they have us taking OT Ronnie Stanley, they say he’s a plug and play on the right side. Do they forget we have Ja’ Wuan James, or do they thing Ronnie will play RG? I’m actually fine with that if that’s the case, or if they think James can move inside. Quality players on the O-line is fine with me.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I see them mentioning moving James inside at guard which is something he has never done. The guy played RT exclusively in college and both RT and LT for us. I really have no idea if James can play guard.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s possible. I was listening to an interview with TJ Clemmings, 1st RD pick last year for the Vikings, and he’s played LT and RT exclusively in college, and they’re talking about possibly moving him inside. They asked him if it will be easy for him, and he said it’s totally different, but I’m sure I can do it, and I’ll do whatever the team needs me to do.

  6. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Glad to see the so called ‘experts’ pegging us with Stanley @ #8. Lure that trade down baby!
But to have him on the right side & possibly moving James inside. Now that’s a WTF WTF dbl take moment!!!

I just don’t see it when there will still be a starting quality DE, LB, or CB likely sitting there.

    Piggy,
I love Cash’s game but he’s a SS all the way.
There is talk about him possibly being moved to OLB but he would have to gain about 25 lbs :/.
    He’s at 212.
    *********
I definately think he is a SS over a FS
but I really think there is not much distinction at all
He does remind me of reshad
I would be fine with 2 Reshad as our safeties

Mike E, two starting LBs and a starting CB from the draft? All as rookies?
    **********

I think teams more and more are getting immediate starters
Its slowly becoming the norm bc of the CBA

I think its part of the reason Philbin ended up being so out of touch

but nabbing 3 rookies to start is still not easy

I do think Mike E’s dream of 2 LBs, a CB, an OG and maybe a TE is a possibility
but we basically have to nail 5 of 8 picks for that to happen
if we draft any other positions (RB, DE, QB, S) its makes it less likely
I don’t think if we draft a DE or QB (especially QB) they will start
but a RB or safety might

I would be surprised if we drafted a CB who started but Its not crazy

We might draft a TE who gets a lot of playing time

but LB (even 2) and OG

If we drafted 2 LBs, an OG and a Safety
    and all were good picks
I think you might nab 4 starters

Its a longshot – but there are a few places where a good player might be able to fill in immediately

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Any examples of that many rookies starting out of the gate on one team? Then there is the question are they good or struggling with the learning curve but they’re still starting as rookies?

Philbin and his staff played young players quite a bit every year they were there, I still don’t know why you many of you still act like they didn’t. I find it baffling that you can’t look at it and realize that they did play rookies and 2nd year guys significantly. The problem was some of them weren’t that good.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He played Tannehill (Gerrard as hurt in a poll accident)
He played Juwann James bc we had a gaping hole

You keep making this argument and its not accurate

every coach in the NFL is forced to play 1st rounders
and he didn’t even do this when Jordan was not suspended
He didn’t start Landry as a rookie even though he was far superior to our roster
He didn’t start Miller – he actually played Donald Thomas over Miller…remember that!

He hesitated to play Jamar Taylor
Aikens barely saw the filed until 2015

Forget about Parker and Phillips this year – they didn’t have a chance

Tim, Philbin was about as pussy as pussy gets with young players

You hear the stuff Jennings is saying now about not letting Tannehill have freedom

2 of 4 1st rounders is 50% in 4 years that is not good

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I always hate it when people (experts) talk about drafting OTs and moving guys all over the OL

    I am all for BPA
but I think the line between Stanley and a defensive BPA is probably pretty slim
in fact probably more the defensive player is actually the BPA

We need OGs at the OL
I don’t think we can afford to draft an Tackle and then start experimenting with moving everyone around
then have the same hole son Defense

There are some good OGs available in the draft
I like Garnett from Stanford a lot
But you don’t have to spend a 1st on him

and traditionally, teams build good OLs without spending 1st rounders on OGs

There is no Zach Martin this yeas as far as I can see in the 2016 draft
So I don’t think the interior player is there in the draft at #8
and I would rather leave our current OTs at OT

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d prefer to address OL in FA with experience.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Whitehair is being compared to Zach Martin, but no way I draft him @ #8 either.

Regardless, all this draft speculation is right now at it’s most pure wild speculations and chasing ones tail until we have the front end of free agency out of the way.

In the meantime, just throw a deck of cards into the air & then pick one off the floor while blindfolded. You’ll be about as accurate as you are now. 😉

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

backup tackle is a pretty big need IMO. Not as big as guard but still pretty big. We can’t count on the tackles we have to play the whole season.

  11. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Piggy

They were talking about Stanley moving over to LT in 2017 and cutting BA. We really do need to improve the OL play just as much as the DL. They’re both issues.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s mainly DE we have to figure out, we’re good at DT.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I know, but it seems they’re all in with Wake, and that’s one side taken care of, but on the O-line, we have 2 spots, plus, the need of a backup T

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Fans were talking about cutting Albert
But was the team? I don’t think so

You can get away with drafting OT early a year ahead of time

but I don’t think you draft backups

I don’t think the DL needs much upgrading
      I think the LBs do

  12. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Drafting a backup OT or a guy in case Albert or James is hurt reminds me a lot of drafting Eddie Moore

Its one thing to call James a bust (which he’s not) and draft an OT again
or part ways with Albert and draft an OT
but that is not what we are doing

We can’t spend 1st round picks on backups
most teams find depth in other ways

No successful team in the NFl functions that way unless they are already contenders

You really need your 1st rounders to make impacts immediately

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, yes DE is the big question right now for the Phins. We have 2 UFA’s there & 1 overpriced aging vet @ 34yo as a huge question physically off of a major injury.
That’s 3 players, 2 were full time starters opposite each other, & 1 was the top rotational depth player @ DE.

Everyone is essentially wasting their time speculating on the draft until we get through the 1st major week or two of FA.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The good stuff to look at now is that we are getting guys healthy & we have brand new coaching seemingly committed to installing a system to fit their team, and thus working with the personnel guys Grier/Tbomb to sign FA’s & draft the ones that will best fit the rest of the core group.

  14. D's avatar D says:

I think people make too little of who can transition inside and who cant. Of course a player is going to say “i can play wherever they need me to” because it means “id like to keep my job so, sure im game”. Some players though dont show traits to suggest they will be good at other positions. Martin for example showed a lot of traits for OG even when watching him play LT. In fact i think he would have been horrible at LT in Dallas’ system but for our ZBS he would have probably been pretty good as a LT. Scheme that is being run and the player’s specific traits all show whether or not they might pan out if asked to change. Clemmings for example i dont think will be near as good inside as on the outside.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i drafted Stanley it would be to replace Albert this year or next, not as an OG who could move back out later. Draft him and plan for him as an OT. James i also dont see as someone who would work out particularly well moved inside, so i hope they dont do that either.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They said Stanley would play RT this season, and James would move inside, and then next year, Stanley would replace Albert

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanley is considered to need more polishing. Replacing Albert with a rook who’s not ready yet doesn’t make much sense to me. We need to build on the OL, not keep trying to replace everyone. That’s why the OL is in the situation it’s in.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I just realized, Clemmings was a 4th RD pick, he fell in the draft big time because of a medical report of a fracture in his leg. He was a 1st RD prospect though, he was projected as a top 20 pick. I forgo the rest of the discussion on NFL radio.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, I don’t get your reasoning for rookies starting? Because they had too. What would be the difference this year? It’s a lame argument.

Go to our draft history from 2012 and count up how many rooks started and/or played at some point. Every year there were rooks who started and/or played significantly or eventually played more as the season went on. There is no debating it, it happened. You act like every other team starts 4-5 rookies out of the gate per year and I bet that’s not even close to being the case.

  17. D's avatar D says:

I think we are going to be more physical and id rather have Tretola or Kirkland personally. Ryan Kelley, or Nick Martin might also be someone to look at for a OG pick for the versatility for either of them to move to OC in a pinch. We also have two guys i think are going to push for a place on the 53 next year in Steen and Painter.

    • D's avatar D says:

Kirkland actually may be the best case for a guy we could start at OG this year and move out to LT in the future. He has really strong OG traits so think he would be a nice stop gap there but he also shows good form for OT.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He carries a frame more for power run schemes. I wonder what the coaches & personnel guys think of him & where he is on our board?
He could really move bodies @ AR.

Then move James again back to RT & move someone else to RG???

Clemmings was a DT for Pitt. I would think he would have an equal chance at playing well at OG.

    • D's avatar D says:

If i remember him good one of the things i saw was that he played tall and didnt get good leverage on players. He was fast enough ont he outside though to cut people off and seemed to have pretty decent feet. Playing tall will get ya killed inside.

      • D's avatar D says:

I didnt realize he played DT, but maybe you are right, DT’s do share the good punch and leverage traits with OG’s, but another question was how was he as a DT?? just because he played there doesnt mean he was good there.

    —————————————–
Ya see my comments above about a guy you like in Denver Kirkland. I think he is one of the better to do what you are suggesting they want to do with James. I think James you look at him and you see OT, i dont see anything that makes me go, man i think he would be a great OG. Martin did, and i think Kirkland does, btu i would also think if we take Kirkland we are going to move to a more power based scheme. Not full on power run offense but definitely more man blocking than ZBS.

  23. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

JaWuan James is what 6’6? Not many OG’s play at that height with much success. He’d have to be a helluva knee bender. I think moving him inside is a disaster.
Leave him to play RT & when needed spot duty @ LT until we groom a guy for LT or swing tackle depth.

    • D's avatar D says:

Kirkland is inbetween 6’4 and 6’5 but he plays pretty low and he alotta man to move. Tretola is roughly same size, unless he is going to try to keep the 15lbs off and continue to play at 315ish.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, Taylor was coming off of hernia surgery and became ill due to medication his rookie season. When he was good to go, he played. Your memory of how things went down are not accurate. Phillips was a regular in the DL rotation all season.

This discussion has nothing to do with Philbin’s opinion on Tannehill. I’m just saying we played rookies every year and you think that doing it this year will be something new and won’t be.

Landry played a ton from day one. Remember we used 3 WR sets most of the time. He lead the team in receptions, kick and punt returns. What are you talking about? LOL

  25. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

It’s unrealistic to expect 3 starters out of the draft so you are kind of setting yourself for failure by expecting it.

Really the top 50 picks is where you expect to find any realistic starter caliber rookies.

Of course position matters as some require more technique in the NFL than others (WR/QB much harder than OL etc)

I’ve posted this before but here’s a statistical analysis on draft pick probabilities from last year via National Football Post from DraftMetrics.

    http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/breaking-down-the-nfl-draft/

Using data from 1995-2014, this is what they found in terms of rookie starter % by draft pick ranges:

    Selection 1-4: 77.5%
    Selection 5-14: 67%
    Selection 15-24: 53.5%
    Selection 25-46: 42%
    Selection 47-73: 27.2%
    Selection 74-114: 13.2%
    Selection 115-187: 6.1%
    Selection 188+: 3.7%
    —-

They have another article where they show the actual number of rookies that achieved starter status in their rookie year between 2010-2014:

    2010: 49
    2011: 55
    2012: 54
    2013: 56
    2014: 51

  26. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Dolphins signed DE Cleyon Laing to a three-year contract.
A 25-year-old CFL standout, Laing recorded 41 tackles, nine sacks and two forced fumbles for the Toronto Argonauts last season. Laing had offers from five NFL teams, but he was reportedly interested in learning from Cameron Wake, who also played several seasons in Canada. Laing played college ball at Iowa State.
    ___________________________
This is the first move to shore up the DE unit. It also is an excellent move to make OV know he’s not going to back a truck up here.
I bet that Tbomb & Grier knows OV really has roots in Miami & wants to stay. Good move, Maybe Cam Wake can make this guy a better Cyclone. 😉

    Tim,
Coples could still be in play IMO for the Fins but they weren’t going to keep him at the price he was contracted for while with the Jets (in fact no team would have paid him that amount).
Coples is a FA and can choose whichever teams he wants to play for but perhaps he found some comfort in Miami and will be back at a cheaper price. Who knows, it’s just an idea i guess.
The team needs a long term DE solution with Wake nearing his NFL retirement and OV on the fence (also the quandry named Jordan.)
In terms of Grier, I have no pattern to judge him by so it’s difficult to see what he’s good at finding, but Tbaum’s history with the Jets suggests he knows how to find front 7 players on defense and then of course his 1 credit at CB with Revis.

  29. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I’m not advocating taking a tackle at 8. All I’m saying is that not having a quality backup tackle has bite us the last 2 years when albert and james went down. It had a lot to do with our shitty record the last 2 years. When you put dallas thomas and jason fox on the same line you’re asking for trouble.

I’m also surprised dallas thomas is still on the team. I would have cut that POS before jason fox

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I too have been banging the drum on needing to groom a LT for the future to take Albert’s job in 1-2yrs.
This is why I was also on here yesterday or before laying out possible trade partners so we could move down a couple of spots & still pick inside the top 16 and be able to fill that need easier with an extra pick.

Wyo, a kid I really like @ FS that can be had a lil later in the draft is Stuart, FL. boy Justin Simmons out of Boston College. He’s close to 6’3 198 and is a team leader & playmaker as well.

    Tim

Do you really think Philbin’s decision to play Daniel Thomas over Lamar Miller was justified?
How bout Wallace or Hartline over Landry in the first half of 2014?
and what about Reshard Mathews, he gets a chance as a rookie to play against Tampa and shines and doesn’t touch the field much again until 2015

I don’t know why you want to argue this point
Philbin is gone now it doesn’t matter

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Let’s just say that if Philbin were coaching the Patriots back in 2001, he would have benched Brady (who was filling in for an injured Drew) and started Bledsoe after Drew was healthy to start again.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So two players’ situations means he didn’t play rookies?

Miller was very unpolished as a rookie. He was 20 years old. Thomas was in there because he was a better blocker and receiver.

Besides the first game in 2014, Landry caught a bunch pf passes from that point on. Landry is a really bad example. He lead the team in receptions and kick and punt returns. Are you really questioning why Wallace and Hartline started on the outside over Landry?

Also, you brought this up, not me. I’ve always felt you and others were wrong about it and still do because rookies played every year. It’s not a defense of Philbin and his staff, it’s a defense of truth and justice for all. LOL

Another thing about playing rooks, you don’t just throw them out there unless they earned it. We also had vets on this team who were better than the rookies. But we played multiple young players throughout every season. There was no way not to because we started to go young and they had to play.

NFL Network’s Rand Getlin reports impending free agent WR Rishard Matthews is unlikely to re-sign with the Dolphins.
There were reports the Dolphins reached out to Matthews, but it made little sense for Miami to bring him back with DeVante Parker waiting in the wings. Getlin reports Matthews should find a “hot” market when he hits free agency. Matthews is an underrated receiver who had a solid season on a dysfunctional offense. He should get a nice payday in a disappointing market.

ESPN’s Mike Triplett reports the Saints are expected to release Marques Colston “in the coming days.”

Cutting Colston would free up $3.2 million in cap space, but leave behind $2.7 million in dead money. Colston is one of the most important players in Saints history, but moving on would be the right decision.

John Bosa was a 1st rd pick when the crappy mid/late 80s Dolphins defense desperately needed defense. It was not a strong class for DL but we took Bosa who was one of the top DL available. There are some other LB’s that I think can ultimately be as good as a healthy Jaylon Smith in time, and we don’t have to guess on the recovery from 2 torn knee ligaments.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve been burned enough recently by selecting injured players, so I tend to agree we shouldn’t look at Smith at #8, however, if we trade back and get an additional 2nd or 3rd I’d be more inclined to take him.

If we were a solid playoff contender I’d be more apt not to take him anywhere in the first.

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Thinking back on last yr, we started out soft, because Mr. Philbin thought his team was so great they didn’t need physical practices, then week one we got out muscled, go figure. After Philbin left, and seeing the pussification of the Dolphins, Campbell ran the Oklahoma drill, and the team played great.

With that said, I’m not going to worry about preseason injuries, I want physical practices in camp.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, John Bosa was actually a pretty good player. Hew blew his knee twice in 3 years. Hard to do much in that situation. Back in the 80s and even the 90s, a significant knee injury was career ending.

Part of the problem when Bosa was on the team was the entire defense was bad.

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hope we’ve seen the end of the cheats getting away with all that BS. I mean come on man, they started opening game against the Steelers with the headset BS everyone knew they were doing, yet the league did nothing, but as the season went on I think we saw less of them getting away with stuff. Both games against the Donkies they didn’t get the calls.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  73. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

ON A more serious note, I see several talent pickers are NOT predicting that Miami will take an O-Lineman in the top 3 rounds. Maybe the think Tanny can magically get better with the same old junky, injury-prone, offensive line he had last season. While I’m NOT picking exact players, I DO BELIEVE that Tanny needs an upgrade AT BOTH GUARD POSITIONS before the start of the regular season. And the DRAFT needs to be used for at least ONE of those two spots. But let’s NOT wait until round 4 as we did last year (with poor results).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Most of us have been saying add a guard and depth at tackle in FA to get more proven guys. Most here throw an OL in their drafts in the 2nd or 3rd at times as well.

I think we should go OL in FA and draft one in the top 4 rounds, maybe add another late and then sign more UDFAs and have big time competition in camp. Let the competition work it out for the best 8 or 9. We know if healthy Albert, Pouncey and James are starters. We need to upgrade the guard positions and let the last 3 or 4 compete for depth.

yes they had a great OL when they finally invested heavily in draft choices that 1st year. We have a very good nucleus of good OL we just need to stay healthy and if we get a decent starting OL Guard we could compete with anyone.

Is Adam Gase going to be as crazy as Harbaugh? Will spittle fly when he yells? I kinda hope so. lol

    I’ve said it before
Sometimes .500 teams make that leap and become the really good teams

A coaching change, some elite players

A lot has to line up

But yes, it can be us

Despite my what my criticism implies, I can see Tanny becoming a grEat NFL qb

I think we have some good pieces in defense
I like our skill players (hopefully we keep Miller)
I think our OL may look worse than they actually are and some tweaking might make a frantic difference

I don’t think we are 1 player away
But I don’t think we are destined to fail
Or in some sort of rebuilding mode

Agreed. Pouncey touched on it when he said that him, Albert and James haven’t been on the field enough and they need to get that corrected. So if we can get that going it should help the guards regardless of who they are. But we still need better competition there.

Mike, has it been pissing rain the last 36 hours by you?

I don’t know if he is big enough to be a 4-3 DE
But his name would be fun to say if we drafted him
