The Wedge Scouting Report: Jordan Howard, RB

Why do I keep getting these damn Phyletic Extremity Dysfunction Emails.

I swear I don’t have a problem with my Phyletic Extremity…it works fine…

I have never ordered those damn pills…

Maybe one of my ex-girlfriends gave this company my email..

…hey…wait a second…what does that say about my…um…

never mind…I’m here to talk football!

And today I have a running back for you.

JordanHoward4

A running back who powers through defenders like a machine that won’t go down!

Jordan Howard is in this alien’s assessment, the most physical back in the 2016 draft.

Yeah, sure Derrick Henry is bigger, but he doesn’t run at guys like Howard does.

at 216 pounds and under 6’0, he is not exactly the next Marshawn Lynch.

JordanHoward5

You keep thinking about that as he runs you over!

Or you can be a smart human and get out of his way!

In 2015 Howard rushed for over 1200 yards while at Indiana against some pretty stiff Big 10 competition.  That was Howard’s only year at Indiana.

Howard was at UAB before Indiana.  You know UAB right?  The school that dropped football.  You feel bad for those kids right?

Well don’t feel too bad for Howard.  Transferring to Indiana probably got him to be a Day 2 pick in 2016.

JordanHoward3

In his college career at both UAB and Indiana, Howard rushed for 3,681 yards.

He didn’t catch a lot of passes. He had 24 total receptions for 261 yards.

but both running and receiving he tallied 27 touchdowns!

The guy can produce and can be a workhorse.  Of course when he gets to the NFL he will probably share carries with another NFL back, like most teams use backs these days.

I bet he makes the most of those opportunities!

JordanHoward2

What really stands out about Howard is his running style.

He just never goes down!

School cancels his football program – He stays up

Defensive End gets in the background – He stays up

Linebacker hits him high – He stays up

DB hits him low – He stays up

Not a day 1 draft pick – He stays up

Kinda reminds me of something…

If Jordan Howard was an Alien Weapon of Destruction…well he might just be that little blue pill that never let’s you go limp.

Well, I wonder if Denver do match our offer for Anderson? We should know today I believe.
    Morning folks.

  2. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Morning uwant. Personally, I hope that Denver matches. I’m not that high on Anderson. He’s a decent back, but I’d prefer to draft one and go with Ajayi.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like CJ Anderson. Guy runs hard, and he knows how to play in a big game, and he also knows what he’s doing out there on the field. I have no problem with drafting a RB, but Ajayi doesn’t have a lot of playing time in the pro game, and just adding a rookie leaves us without an experienced back.

  4. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

    How are you feeling?

  5. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Hope you are better Brian. Always sucks when you get crook like that.

  6. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Mike…I agree with you Anderson is a good back between the tackles and can pass protect.Maybe the 3&1 will be converted this year.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

      Hey Lee

Yeah, I think CJ can do that, but I think Ajayi can also be the guy to pick up those 3rd and short yardage plays too. He’s tough runner.

  7. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Getting better guys, thanks. Today is the first day I’ve felt better, and not worse. My son has been home with me (he sick too) so it’s been kind of fun spending some time with him during the week, albeit while we are sick. Thankfully, he nor my daughter got it as bad as I did.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

Glad to hear that. I’ve looked at Marshall, about the same size as Miller, and also has Miller like speed, maybe faster.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

He ran a 4.29 at the combine. I like the fact that he’s not just fast, but he’s quick too. He has very good hands. Not sure about his blocking but he’s got size so that can be taught IMO.

  11. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

I would take a RB in the 7th. With the 2 A’s we would have the combo to get those tough yards. Sick of going 3&out because we couldn’t get that short distance.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

That’s largely on the OL Lee. Christian Okoye would have a tough time picking up the needed yardage behind our OL.

      No LBs???

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I know- he was rated really low on BR for some reason. I thought about taking Darron Lee at 13, but went with Lawson. We’re pretty thin at DE right now.

  13. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

I see our 1st 3 rounds going OL, DE&DB the order is debatable. I, personally want this whole OL to be sorted both the starters and the depth guys. I think 1 more LB, RB & WR for depth in the rest.

  14. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Piggy do we have to start calling you PiggyRex because you have a serious fetish problem.

  15. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lee

Can’t forget CB too. You could argue we need a CB more than a LB right now, although I do hope we draft a LB, especially if it’s Ragland.

  16. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Brian, lay off the Nyquil my friend….ya don’t like CJ Anderson? Ya want a lower price FA RB? WOW.
CJ is not as expensive as Miller. As Mike said, he’s quite a runner, has big game experience. Handed it to the Patriots too! Oh, and is young as Miller. Like drafting a vet so to speak.

Keith Marshall is exciting, a Miller clone some say. I really ‘liked’ him too. But did you check his oft injury history?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Lol! Yes, that’s why I’d only take a later round flier on him- 4th at the earliest. I’m sort of indifferent to Anderson; I don’t feel like he’s a huge playmaker like Miller was.

  17. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I agree with Lawson, Dodd, Ogbah in the 1st or 2nd, depending on if Hargreaves falls to us, which I doubt he will. But the early rounds needs to be DE, CB, & OL on some sort of BPA formula.
Then from the 4th on have fun. 😉

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Agreed. It would be nice if Hargreaves fell to us at 13, but DE is a huge need right now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think it’s just BPA with a wide range of positions to choose from

And BPA will include pretty much 4 options
DB, OL, DE, RB (if we don’t get CJ Anderson and Elliot is on the board) and yes LB (think Ragland or Lee)

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

NFL.com says Lawson would be better as a 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I was more heavier into Dodd & Ogbah anyways. But I don’t get that assessment for Lawson.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

They feel he got a lot of effort sacks in college, and those won’t be as easy to come by in the pros. He’s not flexible, and doesn’t have strong pass rush moves.

  19. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

CJ I think will grow on us once he’s a Dolphin. He’s only had 2 full seasons in the NFL. He’s about the same age as Miller. Not like we’re getting an old broken down vet.
He runs with purpose & tenacity that jumps out at ya on film. Good on those elusive short yard situations. He can break tackles, and once free can turn it up for the long gainers.
Oh, did I mention he’s become pretty nifty at receiving out of the backfield with a nice YPC avg of 9.5 in 2014 & 7.3 last season.
I think he’s an ascending back like Miller was after his 3rd year. Cj’s 3rd year would be now in 2016.

  20. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    Good morning.

Back from a weekend trip to DC.

Brian, you know better than to post a highlight package of Kieth Marshall. Instant wood (no homo) :).

Anyway, I think on the high end, Marshall may go in the 4th RD depending on the medical evaluation teams make.

Here is the timeline/background news on Keith Marshall:

10/05/13 – Georgia running back Keith Marshall left Saturday’s game against Tennessee with a knee injury and will not return. Marshall took a hit to his right knee after attempting to make a first-quarter catch and had to be helped to the sideline.

08/08/14 – 2014 PRESEASON ALL-SEC THIRD TEAM (MEDIA): …..Finished the season with 246 yards rushing and six touchdowns on 56 carries, in addition to eight receptions for 111 yards and a receiving touchdown … Started at Tennessee, and rushed for 33 yards on five carries before he sustained a season-ending injury in the first quarter. – Georgia football

08/12/15 – All Keith Marshall wants to do is play football. It’s why he came back to the field the moment he received medical clearance last season, even though pain lingered where he tore his right anterior cruciate ligament. In total, Marshall’s midseason ACL tear in 2013 has forced him to miss 18 of Georgia’s past 26 games.”…….”I’m confident in myself and my abilities,” Marshall said. “My biggest thing was getting healthy and I’m healthy now.” The concern with Marshall is whether he lost a step after going through ACL surgery and a lengthy rehab that featured a setback. Marshall admitted his knee injury is the sole reason he hasn’t been able to play and not anything else. Wanting to show he can still play at this level, Marshall’s teammates said they believe his speed is back to where it was two years ago. “I remember watching games,” said Chubb, who was a high school junior during Marshall’s freshman season at Georgia. “I remember he was very fast. I see that now.” Marshall once clocked a 40-yard dash in the 4.3-second range and was among the highest-rated running backs in the country at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, N.C. – Jason Butt, The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

11/17/15: Marshall arrived in Athens as a five-star prospect ranked in the top 15 of the 2012 recruiting class, but injuries over the last three seasons have limited his ability to turn that talent into on-field production for the Bulldogs. “He just wants to move on and take his shot at the NFL,” Richt said on Tuesday, via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

    Agree.
I saw him often and he just looks good in short space and not in open space.

  22. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,

I like CJ Anderson but to me his signing highlights problems with Dolphins management in terms of mid to long term strategy. One of the reasons why you draft a young RB (vs sign a vet) is because he will grow with the team and be there when the team is ultimately championship calibur.

This team, no matter what the front office thinks, is at least 3 years away from that. CJ Anderson at that point will be on the way out. I don’t get the point of using his leadership if it will not result in anything regarding a conference championship or Super Bowl.

On the flip side of that thought, this team doesn’t have enough picks to cover for team need and the need elsewhere is more glaring so the sad reality is that the Fins need to sign a guy like CJ Anderson as they will not likely draft a RB in the 1st 4 rounds (or even 5th for that matter) in a draft class that has many good options. Sign of shitty management unfortunately but I’m hoping they pull one out of their ass for once in the gambling department (with FA signings and with whatever they manage to draft this year) and make it all work.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

If rumors are true that Gase wants Anderson because of his high IQ to constantly evolving gameplans then it makes sense. You bring him in to help transition this offense and help Ajayi with the changing nuances. Maybe they will bring in a later round pick or UDFA to push Willians and grow within the system w/ Ajayi. Maybe they take a flyer on Jonathan Williams if his foot checks out.

This is one of the very few things I agree with NFL.com in regards to prospects.

  24. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, good job on Howard. He’s a nice looking prospect. I guess we’ll find out at 4PM today if we have Anderson or not and whether RB will be a need or not.

  25. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Al, I think our team has a 2 year window, not 3. Too much can change in 3 years with FA. This team is constructed to compete and win now even if you don’t think we can. The players we’ve brought in and re-signed the last couple of years aren’t for the future, they’re for now. If we don’t start making the playoffs and competing this year with the core players we have, it’s going to get redone 3 years from now anyway.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Now they’re saying the Broncos have until after the draft to match Anderson

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Matt Moore visiting the Dolphins today. Did he forget what it looks like?

  28. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Al, I agree, but Miller wasn’t resigned. So being the same age, it’s like we drafted CJ & now his rookie deal is up, so we’re keeping him like he’s our homegrown talent.
I see nothing wrong with that, it matches what you was saying above….and it’s Gase’s guy. He knows CJ, knows he can implement the game plans & calls….huge plus vs. drafting a newbie or hoping Ajayi picks it up quickly & says healthy.
It will be a RB tandem that I look forward to.

  29. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Free agent DE Andre Branch is visiting the Dolphins on Wednesday.
The former Jaguar has also visited the Redskins. A second-round pick in 2012, Branch has just 14 sacks in four seasons. He will turn 27 in July.

    GDP,

What I like about CJ Anderson is that he’s mentally tougher than Lamar, is a better receiver as a RB, and he also fumbles less.

I’m guessing Gase is going to use Anderson/Ajayi like he did Jeremy Langford. The plus side to this is that those two will tire out the opposing team’s LB/DB faster than a fleet footed person will such as Miller.

I like Miller but he wasn’t worth the $ per snap another team gave him because simply the Fins are not going to utilize him in the same way given Ajayi at cheap $/snap in combination with another back.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah, Gase probably said I can’t promise you the amount of touches you’ll get somewhere else. But we are going to run the ball more, which starts with ‘more’ effectively with play calling!

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That is why Miller left. We couldn’t commit to him he’d be a 20+ touch back per game. He’ll get that chance in Houston.

IMO i think williams over vernon any team would take. they lost miller i agree, but not a one of us knows if miller can handle 20+ attempts a game and replaced him with anderson. i would say an even swap. then they traded for two better defenders for a few draft positions. a thing 99% of this board was saying draft position is no big deal when they beat the cheats in a meaningless game. i just dont see where they are losers or winners.

unlike last year where everyone wrote them in the the SB cause of suh

  43. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Al,
Beyond this, his 0.10 Rushing NEP per carry ranks second behind only Jamaal Charles, and puts him in a tie with Marshawn Lynch. Anderson was not only more productive than his fellow backfield mates, he was also more productive than almost everyone else in the league in very limited playing time.

Beyond this productivity, Anderson has demonstrated an ability to hang onto the football, a trait highly coveted on Manning-led offenses. In 213 total touches last season, C.J. Anderson failed to fumble the ball even once.

Lawson is my fav of this draft especially as a RDE prospect. I would MUCH rather have our DE’ be Mario LDE and Lawson RDE, backed up by Wake LDE and Fede RDE, that of course would be with a Wake pay cut. Would mind carrying a 5th DE on the roster for if/when Wake goes out for good this time.

  59. D's avatar D says:

I think thats a really good trade down scenario JSS, very high potential. I even believe your compensation is fairly likely, would be nice if instead of the 4th we could get an additional 3rd, but 4th is probably more likely.

So I took my vehicle in for some routine maintenance at a Firestone a couple of months ago and they said when doing diagnostic check that my emission censors needed to replaced and the bill was outrageous at over $4K. They even said maybe you can get parts cheaper elsewhere and have it done cheaper somewhere else. I was like WTF?!! The problem being that my inspection was close to being up and I would likely fail then have to get it fixed or buy a new vehicle. I don’t want to buy a new vehicle nor do I want to put $4K into a vehicle that has 110,000 miles on it.

So I take it to my uncle’s shop and my cousin who works with him does a test and says you’re fine, you’ll pass. I can’t take my vehicle to their shop regularly because it’s out the way, but for this I needed help. So I go to inspection right after bringing it to them, nobody is there and I’m in and out within like 3-4 minutes. I pass and now I’m good for another 2 years.

The moral of the story is… WTF Firestone?!!! You had me stressing for a few months and were totally WRONG!!!!

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

LOL. I could see them looking at Henry or Collins also.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed, we need another back. Williams is more STs and a 3rd down back being he’s an excellent receiver but not a very instinctive rusher. He’s also not a good KR so we could use a guy to take that load off Landry as well.

  65. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

“When the Dolphins signed Anderson to a four-year, $18 million offer sheet, it seemed unlikely that the Broncos would keep him. After all, the Broncos could have kept Anderson for $2.553 million this season simply by tendering him at a higher level as a restricted free agent. If the Broncos like Anderson enough to sign him to a four-year, $18 million contract, why didn’t they sign him to a one-year, $2.553 million contract when they had the chance?”

    C.J. Anderson stays in Denver

I’m sure it’s the genius of John Elway. LOL

  66. D's avatar D says:

I think now, RB probably moves up in priority in the draft, maybe even second round and a guy like Henry. 3rd round and id be shooting for Collins or Dixon or Drake, might even get away with a 4th rounder for Drake. Im a little iffy on Williams, over a full year and still not doing physical performance tests after a foot injury, those kinda injuries can be career killers so its worrying me he still isnt able to show he has recovered.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Injuries don’t scare us. LOL

      • D's avatar D says:

Its one thing to have a foot injury like Parker where he was still performing with it, but one that puts you out of football and physical activities for over a year…thats a serious buyer beware, but you are right we tend to not care about injuries much to our chagrin

  67. D's avatar D says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! And you know what, I’ve thought about that. But if we were looking to sign Anderson in FA, is it that we don’t want to go RB 1st rd or is it that we really do want another RB and at what cost?

  69. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Good to see Chandler Jones leaving NE.

    • D's avatar D says:

Amen to that, Cardinals defense was already sick, thats just about not fair for all the NFC West teams lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the good of this trade. ARZ had no pass rush outside of blitzing so now they have a true edge rusher.

My guess is Jones was soon to be a UFDA and the Pats just saw what OV got on the market and said let’s start dealing with this now. That’s how they operate.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I hear ya on the injuries, I was just joking. 🙂

  71. D's avatar D says:

Wonder if they might not be gathering up some deeper round pick because of the plethora of conditional picks they are getting they can pretty much package all their regular picks together and move back into the 1st. They might be after a guy like Leonard Flloyd with the way that Belichick loves the SEC guys.

    • D's avatar D says:

Or Bullard…. 😦 its going to hurt me if even more of my friggin Gators got to New England.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well it’s a 3rd and three 6th rd picks but you can now trade comp picks. That ban was lifted and it makes sense. Allow teams to build as they wish.

The Pats will now be in the market for a DE like we are as a stopgap. They know the draft has some depth in pass rushers but they have to wait until the end of the 2nd if they don’t trade up because both theirs’ and Arizona’s 2nd is at the end of the round at #60 and 61 but they get to double up on picks back-to-back.

      • D's avatar D says:

Cant trade comp picks until next year, i meant they can package the 2 seconds they have plus a 3rd and trade back into the first if they want, since they have so many other picks and not a ton of needs on their team.

  72. D's avatar D says:

That shit with Anderson was such a dick move by Elway, dragging it out really caused us to lose out on other considerations, they should have just matched it earlier instead of dragging that shit out. They knew they were going to match, why the song and dance.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They probably needed some time to crunch numbers but Elway fucked up. Could have had Anderson for $2.5M for one season and let it play out.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think they needed to make the cap space available, but the rumor is that teams frown upon other teams signing their restricted FAs, so I’d bet they didn’t care what the Fins thought.

ODs Fav. Alfred Morris is still available. I know he had a down yr, but he gets the tough yards that keep the chains moving.

  73. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What do you guys get out of watching highlights? I saw Quinton Coples Highlights back when he came out and he looked just like Lawson in the highlights above, and we all know how that turned out.

    • D's avatar D says:

Coples has a really low motor, one of the knocks against him is he laid off plays, half asses a LOT and i dont think you can look at two dominant players from their time in college and expect one will go as drastically bad as the other. I see nothing but a really high motor player in Lawson.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        Agreed.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The point was you can’t tell what any player is doing on the non-highlight plays, so there’s no point in watching highlights. You said Coples takes plays off, that’s what I want to see when watching game tape, highlights don’t show that.

  74. D's avatar D says:

I think Alfred Morris or just draft a guy high at this point.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

OD would be happy with Morris.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So would I. I don’t care about an RB running for 100 yrds a game, if he can’t get you a first down on 3rd/4th and short or he can’t get you good yards when the other team knows you’re going to run, then he’s a drive killer. Lamar is a perfect example of this, that’s why there’s no love lost that he left. CJ and Morris can get those important yards. Throw to move the ball, run to keep the D honest, to get important yards, and to run out the clock.

    LSU
The pro day at LSU is complete, and there were some rather fast times as Combine participants improved on their marks from Indianapolis.

Linebacker Deion Jones was the day’s big winner, timing 4.40 in the 40, an improvement of .19 seconds from his Combine mark. Safety Jalen Mills also bettered his mark from Indianapolis, timing 4.50 in the 40.

Former LSU cornerback Rashard Robinson ran times which were clocked between 4.42 and 4.45. It was an improvement from his performance at the Combine; it was a solid mark, but not a great time. I’m told there were 21 teams on hand and a combination of secondary coaches, defensive coordinators and even few head coaches in Baton Rouge primarily to watch Robinson, who is all over draft boards.

As reported earlier and posted on Twitter, Myles Jack did not test in any of the running events, but did touch 40 inches in the vertical jump and 10-4 in the broad.

The running events are over, and the Bruins are finishing up the bench press (reverse from the Combine and most other pro days).

Thus far, it’s been non-Combine invitee Aaron Wallace who’s been the star of the show. His 40 times have been consistently in the low 4.5s (4.51) with a few high 4.4s. He touched 36 inches on the vertical jump and 10-10 on the broad, while also completing 25 reps on the bench.
