The Wedge Scouting Report: Jordan Howard, RB

Why do I keep getting these damn Phyletic Extremity Dysfunction Emails.

I swear I don’t have a problem with my Phyletic Extremity…it works fine…

I have never ordered those damn pills…

Maybe one of my ex-girlfriends gave this company my email..

…hey…wait a second…what does that say about my…um…

never mind…I’m here to talk football!

And today I have a running back for you.

JordanHoward4

A running back who powers through defenders like a machine that won’t go down!

Jordan Howard is in this alien’s assessment, the most physical back in the 2016 draft.

Yeah, sure Derrick Henry is bigger, but he doesn’t run at guys like Howard does.

at 216 pounds and under 6’0, he is not exactly the next Marshawn Lynch.

JordanHoward5

You keep thinking about that as he runs you over!

Or you can be a smart human and get out of his way!

In 2015 Howard rushed for over 1200 yards while at Indiana against some pretty stiff Big 10 competition.  That was Howard’s only year at Indiana.

Howard was at UAB before Indiana.  You know UAB right?  The school that dropped football.  You feel bad for those kids right?

Well don’t feel too bad for Howard.  Transferring to Indiana probably got him to be a Day 2 pick in 2016.

JordanHoward3

In his college career at both UAB and Indiana, Howard rushed for 3,681 yards.

He didn’t catch a lot of passes. He had 24 total receptions for 261 yards.

but both running and receiving he tallied 27 touchdowns!

The guy can produce and can be a workhorse.  Of course when he gets to the NFL he will probably share carries with another NFL back, like most teams use backs these days.

I bet he makes the most of those opportunities!

JordanHoward2

What really stands out about Howard is his running style.

He just never goes down!

School cancels his football program – He stays up

Defensive End gets in the background – He stays up

Linebacker hits him high – He stays up

DB hits him low – He stays up

Not a day 1 draft pick – He stays up

Kinda reminds me of something…

If Jordan Howard was an Alien Weapon of Destruction…well he might just be that little blue pill that never let’s you go limp.

They’re not going to get the production from any rookie they draft this year that Chandler Jones gave them last year. I think they lost a good defensive player that at least in the short term, they can’t replace.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

I don’t know if you saw my response to my own comment but Jabaal Sheard was acquired on a 2 year deal last season from Cleveland. He was a highly rated player when drafted (drafted 37th overall) and he was productive in Cleveland along their DL but Cleveland sucks in general so his overall sack numbers didn’t pop out but he did little things like set the edge well and cause some fumbles here and there. His sack figures in Cleveland were more along the lines of what OV did in Miami. Last year before Sheard was injured, he had 4 sacks in first 5 games.

It’s just a dream but if the Fins were to draft CB William Jackson III, DE Emmanuel Ogbah, & OLB Deion Jones I would have an orgasm.

I’ve seen LSU CB Rashard Robinson mentioned in here a few times over the last 2 days (I know GDP is a huge fan as I am of his game). He’s a 1st RD talent held back by major character concerns.

How exciting that Chris Johnson visited! Did they serve him tea and crumpets? lol

  7. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Also saw some Coples comments on how his career has played out…
Recently acquired Andre Branch has had a Coples type career thus far (drafted 38th overall and did not live up to the hype). In this case, he was signed by Miami at backup $ so it’s all good 🙂

I like Rashad Robinson’s talent, but he’s very wirey and wouldnt be a physical type of corner and just from recent moves and other we targeted, i dont see a guy like him being a target of our team. He’s be a great pure cover guy, but he isnt going to play press well.

Dolphins sign OT/G Jermon Bushrod (1 year, $1.5 million): A- Grade
The Dolphins are getting quite the discount for Jermon Bushrod. The tackle signed a 5-year, $36 million contract with the Bears three offseasons ago, prompting me to give out a Z- grade. The acquisition was so ridiculous that even Matt Millen scoffed at it.

Bushrod is so much better at this price. He struggled in 2015, leading to his benching, but he has played somewhat well at times in the past. He’ll turn 32 in August, so he might not be able to turn his career around, but then again, a positional switch might help. The Dolphins are fine at tackle, but need major assistance at guard. Bushrod has told the media that he’ll compete for a starting guard spot, so there’s a chance this signing could really work out. If not, the Dolphins aren’t risking anything.

    mike

she has never been seen with me so i was assuming she had a bit of self respect.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Bushrod is a serious question mark. He isn’t really a guard. He doesn’t play with power, and he has back issues as well. That’s a big issue at guard. I don’t see him starting anywhere. If he stays on the team, he’ll probably be a backup G/T, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he isn’t on the team long term.

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    gdp
The two times I researched Bushrod…the draft and when he was traded to Chicago….what I did like is that he’s said to be a very good professional and a good locker room presence. This OL/ team need players like that. Maybe he helps bring some stability and leadership to the locker room.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

He could bounce back now healthy. If he was too horrible, I’m sure Gase would’ve tried to stop the signing. In fact he’s probably the one that alerted the FO to look into him.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Oops…he wasn’t traded, just an FA…my bad.

  18. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Cardinals re-signed RB Chris Johnson to a one-year contract.
CJ2K appears to have leveraged the Dolphins into a new deal in the desert.

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    gdp
He’s had back, shoulder and concussion issues. He’s 32, I think. I was just responding to the comments about him being a possible starter at guard. I think that’s a long shot. I think he’s a backup/insurance policy at LT and that’s about it. We’ll see. Not a huge deal either way other than I hope we have better backups at OT this year than last.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

i agree he’s most likely a contingency if/when Albert gets dinged up. In the meantime, should he win a starting spot @ OG, then that either means he’s playing very well or we got big issues @ OG….lol

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

….we also signed Sam Young for depth. Shows there’s a concern @ OT.

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    gdp
If he starts at OG we have issues. He’s a finesse player…not horrible in a zone scheme…but not ideal at guard. Dallas Thomas is a finesse guard…so there’s that. Lol

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You KNOW we have issues, our OG play has been awful, and you also KNOW that our depth at OT has been awful. Now Bushrod makes sense. 🙂

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody knows if Bushrod can play guard or not because he never has.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
And maybe there’s a reason he never has.

    • D's avatar D says:

Reason though could have easily been that you dont look to move a solid OT to OG, wasn’t until his performance dropped off that he probably was consider for a move to inside. He had 2-3 really good years at OT.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Because he’s played LT at every level.

  24. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports the Broncos are expected to place OT Ryan Clady on the trade block after signing Russell Okung.
Clady, who missed all of 2015 with a torn ACL, will undoubtedly either be traded or released. The Broncos signed RT Donald Stephenson earlier in free agency to pair with Okung. Going on 30, Clady used to be one of the league’s best players, but bookended a subpar 2014 with two injury ruined campaigns. He’s due $19.5 million over the next two seasons. Any trade would almost certainly involve a restructure of his contract.

  25. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Just like last year and the year before I have major concern about our oline going into 2016. How hard is it to focus on the oline during the off season. SMH.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

More vets will be cut, and we did sign 2 OT’s. I would think we plan to draft either an OG or OT.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I suspect we are not done with our moves on OL. Draft is still to come and then there is often significant OL movement with the June cuts so we are not done yet. By and large I am glad we have not gone on a major FA shopping spree like normal. But I do agree that the OL as currently constituted is weak once again on the interior.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

It would be interesting to know what Gae with his ystem & Forester think of the OL they inherited. Maybe they think these guys can play within the right framework. The talent is certainly there.

  26. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    mike,
there were a few guards that we could have had like boone, mathis etc… We signed a LT to play guard for 1m and it seems like we’re done. I know there is the draft but we drafted thomas, turner, douglas and none of them panned out IMO. We need a solid vet to play at least one guard position for us. And then let the youngsters and bushard battle for the other position.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I have a hunch Douglas begins to break out in his 2nd year, same with Turner who sat mostly his 1st year with the toe injury.

    _______________________________
Not sure the talent is there. Certainly not with Thomas. I was underwhelmed with Douglas. I still think Turner may have talent. He has flashed in the run game but struggled in pass protection.

  28. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Barring some major issues, to me most successful NFL OT can play OG. I know Randy may say otherwise but in simplistic terms, the only difference at the NFL level is the speed in which an OT/OG have to deal with in space.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have seen a number of times when OTs have been switched to OG. That’s not uncommon. Not saying the Bushrod expirement will be successful but he is a guy Gase is familiar with so it may work. He is not going into it blind.

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

Agree. It’s a low level risk at this point. The draft and post June 1 cuts will have to provide more competition at all OL positions. But going back to the whole OT / OG crap, to me at both positions mechanics are important so what works at OG and OT and vice versa both applies (bend level, use of hands, power, etc) except that at OT it all has to be done faster or else you get exposed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve got 3 starting OTs one of the 3 surely can play G, better than what we had last yr.

I wouldn’t say we signed a LT to play LG. I think they signed Bushrod to backup either OT spot, but while they have him, let him enter the fray at OG.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Cheats traded Jones, because he had one yr left on his rookie deal and they knew they weren’t going to sign him, so they cut their loses and got what they could, a 2nd and an OL.

I’m glad Jones is gone. They also signed Chris Long for less money to take his place, but Long seems to be on the decline.

  35. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

NBC Denver expects Broncos OT Ty Sambrailo to kick inside to guard.
There’s no longer room for the 2015 second-rounder on the perimeter after the Broncos signed Russell Okung and Donald Stephenson. Of course, Okung has a lengthy injury history, so Sambrailo could still play some tackle in 2016. Sambrailo played just 215 snaps as a rookie before undergoing shoulder surgery.

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, Chris Long was a good player for a few years. Injuries have set back his career. Just like another Long from that draft. 😉

  37. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Guys,
MikeE’s view is kind of how I viewed this. Bring Bushrod in to be a vet backup at LT but see if he can move inside because even if he can’t start you want your swing backups to either be OG/OT or C/OG guys. You want to get him snaps at guard regardless, and he’s at a place in his career where he needs to do whatever’s asked of him.
    ***
I actually said we should consider signing him on the blog when he was a FA several years ago. I think he can be a good LT in the right system, if he’s healthy. Can he learn to be more physical and hold up to the additional beating and strain on your body at guard? Sure, he might, but he has always been a guy who relied on his athleticism and not his power….and lots of people seem to be calling for us to be tougher and more physical these days. Then, you add in the back issues. Yes, he’s had a couple good years…at LT. Yes, guys can move inside, but it’s certainly not a given because plenty of guys can’t too. I’m not saying he absolutely can’t. I just wanted to throw my .02 in on him being a starting guard.
    ***
I just really hope one or two of our young guards step up. Draft another young guy this year, and get some deeper competition going.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well the team and even Bushrod said LG is where he’s projected to play. The fall back is we have a guy who can also play LT, but LG is where we’re penciling him in for now.

I have no idea if he’ll be successful there or not but I hope he is. 🙂

Tim – penciled in as a starter in March. That’s like Alonso and Misi being penciled in as starters. Means absolutely nothing . . ..

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Al,
I would disagree with your comments on the OG vs OT. Sure, there are similar skills, but they are quite different positions in other aspects and require different skills and talents. It’s not brain surgery, but lots of guys simply can’t do it. You’re also dealing with different sorts of defenders. You can get away with not being able to play with power at LT because it relies more on footwork and agility. You can’t playing inside against quick, 310-20 pound guys without power. That’s a major issue for Dallas Thomas, for example. He gets beat with power repeatedly. It matters. Just my opinion. I hope Bushrod can play LG…be good for us.

It’s possible they picked up Bushrod to play OG, but my instincts tell me he was brought in for depth at OT, considering how awful it’s been. My guess is they bring in an OG who has actually played OG in the NFL, and/or draft another OG. We have a long way to go, but that’s what I think.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bushrod was brought in to compete at LG, and play OT, if we get an injury, but in the end the best combination of 5 will be playing. Maybe he plays G, maybe tackle, if he’s one of the five best he’ll start. Don’t be surprised, if he start at T and James or Albert plays inside.

Tannenbaum is the GM. Don’t ever mistake that

Erick Gadala @egmfc @OmarKelly So you’re saying that the rookie GM is learning. Cool…wondering how many games/years it will take to train the rookie HC.

I give the Dolphins a solid B. It’s the dumb moves they didn’t make that they usually do. Of course, they have to suck on the Patriots teet and give them a B+ for getting rid of their best pass rusher. Yeah, great move, genius in fact.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

And Elway having to match Anderson’s deal when he could of locked him up at $2.5M for a year was also genius that a layman simply can’t understand.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

LOL. The best part is seeing Dolphins fans Twitter reactions every time Miami is mentioned as talking to a player, not even serious, it’s “Alright Miami bring them in, let’s do this!”. Said player doesn’t sign, not even offered a contract, “Oh, you suck Miami!”. 😂😂😂😂 Peopele losing their shit because Miami isn’t doing what they did in the past…..which these same people bitched about.

Philly was jizzing all over when they picked up Maxwell and Alonso last year, but now their geniuses, and we’re idiots. Could it be somewhere in between? They were very good players at one time, one (Maxwell) wasn’t used properly last season, and one was injured (Alonso) and is hopefully now healthy. So we don’t give up a pick, just 5 draft slots in the 1st RD, but we gave up too much. I think it’s a good thing they have losing the offseason, because we usually win that, and then go 6-10 or 7-9 or 8-8.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

As mentioned below, we saw how many players on our Defense were not used properly, on offense too (Miller, Tanny, Cameron). Doesn’t mean these players are suddenly bad.
Grimes was let go not for his play, but because of age, cost, failure to renegotiate, & the black Lisa Lampanelli.

  90. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Dbolt, that film study chart at the end showed Grimes wasn’t that bad. Which I’ve said to everyone here except for Tim and maybe a few others. Most of the narrative is how he gets burned by the big WR’s. He did at times, but he also had his fair share of wins that go unnoticed too.
The defense had a bad year as a whole, which started up front & a bad scheme.
Can’t rely on a secondary to save you when the opposing QB has freedom to let the play called fully develop.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Grimes got beat up in division games vs both Jets WRs and Watkins. He also got eaten alive by ODB Jr. Outside of that he matched up ok w/ lesser WRs. Another issue Grimes had was voluntarily avoiding tackles & it was a lot worse than what you saw in the clip from Maxwell. He still has ability, but as you said…not at that price & especially not with that wife. Grimes & Kelly had tried to paint the picture of Reshad Jones being the reason the team D failed.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I think I heard it was said that Jones took too many gambles. But hey, in a failing defensive system, you start pressing & doing those things to stop the bleeding.
I can’t fault Jones there. I fault the coaching, Coyle!

Ravens CB Tray Walker suffered serious head injuries in his dirt bike accident Thursday evening and remains in critical condition.
Walker reportedly was hit by a Honda Civic around 7:50 PM as he was riding his dirt bike with dark clothes on and no lights. He underwent surgery for multiple head injuries all night and is still fighting for his life this morning. Our thoughts are with Walker, his family, friends, and the Ravens’ team.
