Should the Dolphins be concerned at RB?

As of now, the depth chart is basically Jay Ajayi, and then quite a few unproven players, although Kenyan Drake is only unproven because he hasn’t yet played in the NFL because he’s a rookie.  Head Coach Adam Gase has publicly stated that he wants each and every RB in his stable to have the skills to stay on the field for an entire drive if necessary.  That translates into number one, having the stamina to to be able to stay on the field for an entire drive, to have running skills to keep a driving, to be able to pass block adequately, and also be proficient at catching the ball out of the backfield.  The question then is, do any of the other RB’s we currently have on the roster besides Ajayi and Drake possess those skills?  Let’s take a look.

Daniel Thomas – 28YO – 6’0″ 225

Miami Dolphins v Indianapolis Colts

Daniel Thomas

Thomas is making his third attempt with the Miami Dolphins.  Thomas was drafted by the Dolphins back in the 2011 Draft, #63 overall. Thomas’s best year was his rookie year, where he totaled 581 yards rushing on 165 carries for a 3.5YPC average, very pedestrian.  One thing Thomas has in his favor, he’s an accomplished pass blocker.  He’s not great, but he might be the best blocker in the backfield.  He’s a decent receiver, but never caught more than 15 passes.

Damien Williams – 24YO – 5’11” 211

Damien Williams

Damien Williams

Damien was basically 3rd string last year, behind Lamar Miller and Jay Ajayi.  Not much of a book on Williams really, other than the fact that he actually seems more comfortable running after a catch than he does on a hand off.  Williams has nearly as many receptions as he does carries, 42 receptions and 52 carries.  His only 2 TD’s both came on pass receptions.  If you’ve watched Dolphins football, it seems Williams likes running after the catch.  He has averaged 3.7 YPC, but has a decent 7.8 YPR on his 42 receptions.  His rushing skills do not inspire a lot of confidence, so I think he’s a long shot.

Isaiah Pead – 26YO – 5’10” 197

sfl-dolphins-isiah-isaiah-pead-20160331

Isaiah Pead

Isaiah Pead was drafted in the 2nd RD of the 2012 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, 50th overall.  We practically killed Daniel Thomas here, he of DT3 fame.  Imagine if we got the production Isaiah Pead gave the Rams???  19 rushes, 78 YDS in 3 seasons, along with 14 catches for 94 yards.  ZERO TD’s.  You can kind of understand why Pead was expendable.  Maybe a change of scenery will provide the right atmosphere for a career resurrection for Pead.  He has decent speed, ran a 4.47 40, and he’s an agile guy as well, was a good receiver in college.  He’s a deficient pass blocker, so that’s something he’s going to have work hard to improve to make the roster.

OK, so this is what we currently have on the roster, but a recent development, as recent as yesterday, has Arian Foster supposedly healthy enough to participate in an NFL training camp.  If that’s the case, I would think the Dolphins, who have been in contact with Foster and have obviously shown interest, will be monitoring this closely, and bring him in for a look see.  If Foster is healthy, he brings a veteran presence to a very young backfield, and the ability to do it all, if he’s healthy.  That’s the 64 million dollar question with Foster, is he healthy enough, and can he stay healthy enough to last an entire NFL season.  I think there’s a very good shot Foster will be our 3rd RB.  We’ll have to wait and see how his health is, and if we offer him the right opportunity, both $$$ wise, and workload.

I think we’re fine at RB unless we get hit with a lot of injuries. In fact we might be really good at RB with Ajayi and Drake.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I’m going to delete this article. lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, no need for that. I just don’t get too concerned about RBs being young and we do have a bit if a vet presence as well.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What I learned from the article is Pead isn’t a good pass blocker, not sure where you got that from though, but we find out soon enough.

  2. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can see us signing Foster, but nothing more than a million. I really don’t think we need him. Pead passed the eye test when I saw him play with the Rams, not sure what the issue was.

    • D's avatar D says:

A lot of it was just production by other RB’s. I dont think he saw the field much because he had senior RB’s with more time in the system that were doing OK, and then a couple of rookies that came in and shined. Tre Mason, Todd Gurley, Zac Stacy, etc etc.

  3. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Good job Mike. I am a bit concerned with the lack of experience at RB. Time will tell, but I think that the loss of Miller will prove to be greater than some think. There is this notion that has take shape the last few years of “Oh, we’ll just find a RB some where in the draft or FA to take his place”. If that were the case, then every team in the NFL would have a Pro Bowl Caliber RB in their team

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Miller hurt the O more than he helped it, you’ll see this year what I’m talking about.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Please Steve. How can you even say that? I’m not even going to waste my time posting his stats, you can research them yourself. All I’ll say is, given the opportunity, he could have put up some MONSTER numbers.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I say that because he couldn’t run it when we needed him to. He got his big numbers in a few games, then was very inconsistent the rest of the time. He made some huge plays for us, but would be better suited as a complimentary back. They stopped using him at times in 2nd halves, because he wasn’t getting it done.

    No

  5. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ok Mike, I did a little research on Pead’s pass blocking skills and I’ve seen conflicting reports. Care to tell us why you think he isn’t a good pass blocker?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      His combine profile said this:
Pead isn’t a willing blocker and barely displays the strength to stall rushers when he does step in. He has limited experience catching passes out of the backfield, and there are questions as to his consistency. He is a bit undersized and hasn’t been hit enough times in college to get a feeling of what his durability will be at the next level.

He’s considered a space player like Drake though Drake is a bigger back.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’ve seen other reports conflicting with all of that, and watching him play for the Rams I don’t agree.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He caught 87 passes AT UC, and was even used as a WR, I wouldn’t call that limited experience catching passes. We’re really just splitting hairs here though, because I don’t think we’ve had the top 2 this good for quite a while.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ajayi carried suck a heavy workload his last year in college that I don’t see it being a problem for him to be a consistent 18-20 touch PG back.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we carry 3 RBs I hope DT3 makes it, 4 I’d add Pead. DT3 add the physical dimension the others dont, he’d be my run out the clock back when there’s less than 2 minutes left, and short yardage back, when going against a run heavy D (when moves don’t help).

    • D's avatar D says:

If i could have Gilislee back as our number 3 id rather that than either DT3 or Pead, though i am not sure we see any of those guys, possibly a late pickup guy like Foster or some other camp cut.

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Tim posted it. It was Pead’s combine analysis. If you have other reports that say he’s good, that’s fine with me. Can you post them please, so we can all read them?

  9. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

“After watching him play for the Rams” Do you watch every single Rams game? He hardly played, so you’d probably have to watch every single game in order to arrive at that conclusion.

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

What any one of these guys did in college is pretty much irrelevant. Who cares if he caught 87 passes at UC, or UCLA? What has he done in the pros? That’s all that’s relevant now, especially out of the #50 pick. It’s not like he was undrafted so he didn’t have a shot to crack the lineup.

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You guys kill me with your stats comments like Brian’s above. I’m not even going to waste my time posting his stats, Brian says. Stats for the most part are a waste of time, unless you break them down and watch tape (I’ve done that with Miller).

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    I agree D on Gillislee.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve seen RBs establish themselves at least as solid role players later in their careers after they didn’t really live up to their draft status or whatever. Maybe DT3 and/or Pead become one of them. Just do the job you’re asked to do.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

DT3 has poor vision, Ben Volin prooved that a few years ago, I don’t think he’ll be much better than what he was in the past, unless Gase can scheme around it. Being an RB without good vision is like a QB that can’t change the play at the LOS.

  15. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Here’s Pead’s college stats and yes he showed to be more than a limited receiver.
    http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/players/isaiah-pead-1.html

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Pead is a space player, a poor man’s Reggie Bush. A couple of counter runs and stretch plays and a couple of catches if he makes the roster and dresses on game day. He could be a KR as well. I see him competing with Williams. DT3 may be more like what Steve said, the guy who you ram into the defense when running out the clock as to not wear down Ajayi and Drake when you don’t need too.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think he’s more of a Gillislee type RB, but has more fight on inside runs. As a backup we just need someone to run it enough that we can continue to run it, instead of passing on every down. With Ajayi, Drake, DT3, and Pead we have 4 Gase types of back, that leaves Damien cut. We may only keep 3, but if someone gets hurt that 4th guy can be resigned, and would know the system.

  17. D's avatar D says:

One guy id keep an eye out for is Justin Forsett, Balt may cut him this year if Dixon shows well in training camp. I hear he pretty much would be a target as a roster cut becuse his 3+ mil salary is 0% guaranteed so they would lower thier cap by making a move that would essentially be cutting a backup if Dixon winds up as advertised. He would be a pretty solid addition for us as he is a fairly rounded back able to catch, block and run between the tackles.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Other backs coming in could happen in camp. But I’m not really worried. No team can sustain injuries to #1 and #2 and everything stays the same.

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree,No need to worry about things that are not predictable unless you just really like to worry. We could be fine with 3 or need 5 just to have a back by end of the season, who knows. I do think however, they might want to add another back, just because according to what i have read there will be a strong commitment to the run so they may want to have decent stable of capable backs. Wont be long before we start to see things take shape and know the answers.

  18. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Buffalo and Dallas have too many RBs on their roster as well. Their cuts might be attractive. I would love to have Gillislee back as I think cutting him was one of our biggest personnel mistakes of the Philbin era.

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In addition to LeSean, the Bills have Karlos Williams whom I would love to get, Gillislee, Boom Herron, and Jonathan Williams whom they just drafted, meaning they might want to keep him over Mike Gillislee. They also have Big James Wilder, who is as big as a small TE. Unfortunately, he is as slow as a TE also. But do we even want a FB? or a Bruiser back type HB? or will we just use Duarte as an H-back and save a roster spot.

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Cowboys have Zeke whom they plan to run as a bell, I’m sure, but they also have Darren McFadden (I know he’s always hurt.) and Alfred Morris (I know, can’t catch) and Lance Dunbar who is a sneaky fast smaller guy who can hurt a D off the edges, and they also have some guy who looks like a clone of Zeke named Darius Jackson. Same face and body.

But the guy I would want is Rod Smith who is just one year out of Ohio State and his picture is downright frightening. He’s huge (6’3 235), but I don’t know if his 40 time (4.5-4.6) is too slow to bother with. Plus he was kicked out of OSU for a failed drug test. But if you just want a guy on the PS to call in if 2 guys get hurt, he will pound the rock hard for you and wear down a D or play possession..

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Naples

The Chiefs have a couple of guys I wouldn’t mind having here if they let one go. They have Jamaal Charles, Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Kniles Davis. If they go with 3 instead of 4, I’d take any of the guys they let go.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

very true but I doubt they let any of those 4 go anywhere, especially with Charcandrick just having balled out so hard last year and with Jamaal badly hurt. Knile is a fumble risk I hear. Or maybe he can’t catch or block. I forget which. Great pure Running skills though.

Gase was hired in large part by selling himself as a quarterback whisperer that believed in Tannehill’s talent.

Man this is bad though: “Isaiah Pead was drafted in the 2nd RD of the 2012 NFL Draft.” he should be pimping for his set for life contract right now.

No, they stopped using him in the second half because the play calling was horrendous. He averaged 4.6 yards per carry, and 7.6 yard per catch in his career with us, and that was behind some of the worst OL’s in football for those years. If they would have used him MORE, then his meaningless stats would have been even better.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Go look behind the stats, and you’ll see more than 50% of his runs are 1 yard or less. What are you Omar, projecting out his numbers, if he was used more?

If he rushed for a yard or less on 50% of his runs, then tha means the other 50% he rushed for averaged 7 yards. That pretty damn good! Again, don’t discount the fact that our OL was atrocious at times, and he was getting lit up seconds after he recieved the handoff.

Stanger, the thing about Led Zeppelin and and the band Spirit is they did play together in the last 60s but Spirit never performed the song Taurus live. They were more of an upbeat band and that song is a really mellow trippy tune. The parts that are similar is a common chord progression and then the rest of the song is not alike.

Spirit was trying to profit off a classic song where their song Taurus would have never been a big hit the way it was constructed. It doesn’t build the same way with the big finale, it lacks the great lyrics and vocals and guitar solo. That’s why they lost the case. It was a reach and a money grab and the court saw through it.

    2nd and 2 at MIA 29

    (7:01 – 1st) L.Miller right end to MIA 30 for 1 yard (K.Robinson; D.Ihenacho)

    3rd and 1 at MIA 30

    (6:21 – 1st) (Shotgun) L.Miller right guard to MIA 30 for no gain (D.Ihenacho, J.Hatcher)

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can’t always put that on him though. How was the blocking? We haven’t been a good short yardage running team for a few years.

      • D's avatar D says:

I will say there were a lot of times it was on him because when he hit the line, he went off script. It is partially because he was trying to make something happen when there wasnt much to work with, but had he executed the play as designed he probaby gets a yard or 2 more just from momentum. His decision to stop and dance at the line instead of hitting the hole, it did cost us yardage.

That said im not a Miller wasn’t very good guy. I believe he was a pretty solid back with a lot of home run potential, but he isnt always a decisive runner and that second guessing stuff will hurt him in Houston if he doesnt work on it. He could be a great RB, he has all the tools to be so, but he wasnt there yet with us.

No you can’t always put that on him Tim, just like when he runs for 80, you can’t put that all on him, but you’re missing the point. What was the % he ran for a first down on 2nd/3rd and less than 3? It wasn’t good. How many times did he run the clock out? How many times on 1st down did he get 3+ yards? We need a running game that compliments the passing game, not feast or famine.

Yeah there is really no way that Spirit has any leg to stand on for their claims.
These are some of the more funny comparisons i have heard used that illustrate thatthese chord patterns are so basic they are found in tons of places.

“Led Zeppelin’s defense, at least in part, has been that that the guitar passage in question is so common that Disney might as well accuse them of lifting it from “Chim Chim Cher-ee.””

There have also been references to similar chord progressions from Renaissance music, from which it sounds like Spirit may have stolen it originally lol.

Like the guy pointed out one chord progression does not a song makes and in the case of Stairway there are layers progressions some ascending some descending woven together so while the chord progressions clearly is comparable, the song itself isn’t.

I also a funny excerpt about Reggae music, saying there is 0 way outside of a massive bong hit to differentiate the drum kit and beat pattern of two reggae songs, so does that mean all of them are in copyright infringement of each other?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Well said.

Here’s an example of how simple and common these progressions are but it’s how you play them that makes the song. There are only 12 notes to work with and only a few common chords that you can then add notes to that expands the phrasings. But most structures are similar, it’s the phrasing and style that makes it different.

Steve, I hear ya on Miller. I personally liked his ability as an offensive weapon. He wasn’t the best grind it out back but he didn’t get a lot of opportunities to be that either – 7, 9 and 11 rushes isn’t enough to establish that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Besides doing more work with personnel (including evaluating tape of college players), Dolphins special adviser Dan Marino apparently is doing more coaching.

Rookie Brandon Doughty said last week that Marino is “in every meeting” with the team’s quarterbacks, joining assistants Clyde Christensen and Bo Hardegree and occasionally, Adam Gase. Marino also has been hands-on with Doughty.

“He’s been telling me I need to align to my throws, not fall off my throws,” Doughty said. “I’m going to work on that the next five weeks, I guarantee you. I get to talk to him every single day. It’s pretty cool.

“Actually had a flashback; my mom sent me a picture of Halloween of me being Dan Marino. I showed him the other day. Dan has still got it. A lot of teams don’t have a guy like that, with that much knowledge, to pick his mind. We’re in a special spot.”

You don’t have to be a grinder to get 20 carries. There are many around the NFL like that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yes, but his body can’t handle that many carries, and the more he gets the less effective he becomes. McFadden is the same type of back, why did they draft Zeke? It was well documented that Miller would frequent the trainers office with lots of soreness after games, the more carries he got, the more soreness he had, that was why he was limited.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

when he goes to the probowl after running for 1400 yds and 10 TD’s

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well he has scored 9 and 10 TDs the last two seasons. 1,400 would be 301 more rushing yards than in 2014. He’ll likely have had more carries to do that. If Miller goes beyond 1,500 rushing and 15 TDs it’s gonna hurt a bit.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        He’d be really sore after a season like that . . .

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

        AVG 4.6
        TD 3
        1089
        Almost 15 carries a game.

Miller will surely have more TDs. I’d love to have a back like either of these two, but not for $6.5M when they can’t get you a first down when you need it.

  63. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

TIME FOR THE INTERNATIONAL BIG BOYS to finally admit that Rio IS NOT A FIT PLACE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES!! – – The final nail in the coffin may have occurred yesterday when WADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency which oversees all drug testing, SUSPENDED the testing agency hired by Brazil for the upcoming Olympics for testing inconsistencies. This particular agency previously was suspended by WADA in 2013 but was conditionally reinstated, providing that certain improvements were made. Well, guess what? –Those improvements WERE NOT MADE!–Money promised by the Brazilian government to upgrade this testing agency IS NOT AVAILABLE!! Hell, that government can’t even clean up the waters around Rio nor can they get some of the venues completed IN TIME for the Olympic Games!! –And, as for SECURITY, forget about that. Rio is coming up well short on that issue, too.
    ————-
Then there’s the overwhelming issue of the Zika Virus. Dozens of world class athletes WILL NOT be putting themselves to the risk of Zika, especially since the Rio officials lack sufficient funds to, literally, “Clear the Air” of Zika virus, borne by hordes of mosquitoes. NOW NBC, and many sponsoring corporations, say “the games should go on,” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. I say let’s bring some common sense to this issue and suspend/move the Olympics to a country THAT’S ACTUALLY ABLE TO PUT ON THESE GAMES IN AN ORDERLY AND CORRECT FASHION!!

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

  77. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think it’s a very smart move. Little risk salary wise, and if he re-energizes his career here, it’s good for the team, and him as well. He’ll play 3B, fill in at 2B and SS, and maybe even play some outfield. Best part is he can give us a true leadoff hitter who can steal bases, which really lengthens the lineup, and gives Granderson a better chance to drive in runs.

I still hold out a little hope for another comeback by Knowshon or Arian to give us a burst out of the box in Seattle and NE. Wouldn’t that be great if one of them ran for a hundred in each game? Then he could split with Ajayi for a great mid-season one-two punch. Even if he faded some down the stretch due to gettin nicked up and wore out…by that time Drake would be acclimated and could come in fresh and finish off the season and make a big splash in the PLAYOFFS!!!!

Fernandez has a lifetime record of 23-1 (I SHIT YOU NOT) in Marlins Park!!! Game time is a little past 12 noon. I just hope Jose is not TOO AMPED UP for this game!
    ——————-
This series has shown the strengths and weaknesses of both teams. Miami’s starting pitching is NOT where it needs to be. And Miami surrendered 9 walks and a hit batsman to Chicago in today’s game – – usually a recipe for disaster. But this team plays with grit. And, man, can they ever HIT!! 4 of their starters are hitting over .300, plus Dietrich’s hitting .294, and that’s NOT COUNTING Ichiro’s .347 average when he plays. The loss of top hitter Marcel Ozuna didn’t even slow down the Marlins’ hitting machine today!! –The Cubs perception of invincibility has taken a major hit this past week. They lost 3 straight at home to the Cardinals and are in danger of losing 3 out of 4 to the Fighting Fish. In my opinion, Chicago is NOT the best team right now in the National League. That honor belongs to the San Francisco Giants who, from top to bottom, are the best team in all of baseball (with the Rangers a close second).

All my family is fine. I literally live on the top of a mountain, so no flooding issues for me. My mom, sister and I were at the beach this past week and I was watching it all from there. When I got home yesterday evening I started reading the newspaper site about the flooding and the first story I clicked on mentions one of my former coworkers, a friend, was one of the fatalities. She was a great person and a lot of fun. I hadn’t seen her in a while, but would bump into her from time to time and we would always catch up with what was going on. I’m just stunned. The whole thing is a clusterfuck.
The tories have a dead-in-the-water leader and are in no rush to appoint a new leader – a leader who needs to negotiate an exit from the EU and “terms” for doing so. Turns out that a referendum is not even legally binding, but I don’t think the Tories will defy the majority.
Half of the labour cabinet have resigned.
The turnout was 72% so about 14m didn’t vote. Most exiters voted for the wrong reason and didn’t expect to win. Most who didn’t vote thought remain would win so didn’t vote. Scotland (the bitch Sturgeon abetted by the bigot and puppetmaster Salmond) will try to leave the UK again. SinnFein called for Ireland to unite. Won’t be long before the Welsh catch on. Will have to change my handle to englishfinafan.

The next dominoes to topple could be Frexit (Le Pen seems to have got a taste for this game) with Italy, Sweden and Spain all possible followers.

We have a chronic skills shortage in the NHS and most of the shortfall is made up by ……. you guessed it …….. EU immigrants. Many of the Brexiters have voted to leave so there will be jobs. Those jobs that were unfilled before because it’s easier for scroungers to sit at home and live off hand-outs from the welfare state.

Then he’d tell about how they went on strike for more, including about he and his boys would get semi-violent about it.

What happened — because of their “vote” by action on that….the factory closed up and the owners re-opened down South somewhere where it was non-union.

He said his next job paid half as much. He had some great stories about keeping up the fight though.
