Should the Dolphins be concerned at RB?

As of now, the depth chart is basically Jay Ajayi, and then quite a few unproven players, although Kenyan Drake is only unproven because he hasn’t yet played in the NFL because he’s a rookie.  Head Coach Adam Gase has publicly stated that he wants each and every RB in his stable to have the skills to stay on the field for an entire drive if necessary.  That translates into number one, having the stamina to to be able to stay on the field for an entire drive, to have running skills to keep a driving, to be able to pass block adequately, and also be proficient at catching the ball out of the backfield.  The question then is, do any of the other RB’s we currently have on the roster besides Ajayi and Drake possess those skills?  Let’s take a look.

Daniel Thomas – 28YO – 6’0″ 225

Miami Dolphins v Indianapolis Colts

Daniel Thomas

Thomas is making his third attempt with the Miami Dolphins.  Thomas was drafted by the Dolphins back in the 2011 Draft, #63 overall. Thomas’s best year was his rookie year, where he totaled 581 yards rushing on 165 carries for a 3.5YPC average, very pedestrian.  One thing Thomas has in his favor, he’s an accomplished pass blocker.  He’s not great, but he might be the best blocker in the backfield.  He’s a decent receiver, but never caught more than 15 passes.

Damien Williams – 24YO – 5’11” 211

Damien Williams

Damien Williams

Damien was basically 3rd string last year, behind Lamar Miller and Jay Ajayi.  Not much of a book on Williams really, other than the fact that he actually seems more comfortable running after a catch than he does on a hand off.  Williams has nearly as many receptions as he does carries, 42 receptions and 52 carries.  His only 2 TD’s both came on pass receptions.  If you’ve watched Dolphins football, it seems Williams likes running after the catch.  He has averaged 3.7 YPC, but has a decent 7.8 YPR on his 42 receptions.  His rushing skills do not inspire a lot of confidence, so I think he’s a long shot.

Isaiah Pead – 26YO – 5’10” 197

sfl-dolphins-isiah-isaiah-pead-20160331

Isaiah Pead

Isaiah Pead was drafted in the 2nd RD of the 2012 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Rams, 50th overall.  We practically killed Daniel Thomas here, he of DT3 fame.  Imagine if we got the production Isaiah Pead gave the Rams???  19 rushes, 78 YDS in 3 seasons, along with 14 catches for 94 yards.  ZERO TD’s.  You can kind of understand why Pead was expendable.  Maybe a change of scenery will provide the right atmosphere for a career resurrection for Pead.  He has decent speed, ran a 4.47 40, and he’s an agile guy as well, was a good receiver in college.  He’s a deficient pass blocker, so that’s something he’s going to have work hard to improve to make the roster.

OK, so this is what we currently have on the roster, but a recent development, as recent as yesterday, has Arian Foster supposedly healthy enough to participate in an NFL training camp.  If that’s the case, I would think the Dolphins, who have been in contact with Foster and have obviously shown interest, will be monitoring this closely, and bring him in for a look see.  If Foster is healthy, he brings a veteran presence to a very young backfield, and the ability to do it all, if he’s healthy.  That’s the 64 million dollar question with Foster, is he healthy enough, and can he stay healthy enough to last an entire NFL season.  I think there’s a very good shot Foster will be our 3rd RB.  We’ll have to wait and see how his health is, and if we offer him the right opportunity, both $$$ wise, and workload.

From a Tampa Bucs fansite — Seems they have no clue what they are in for. 🙂
    —————————–
Apparently, seventeen teams called to inquire about his services after he hit free agency. That’s what his wife Miko Grimes said on ESPN radio. Not just that, but Grimes also said that the Miami Dolphins tried to match the Bucs’ offer, and her husband just didn’t want to go back to Miami — a claim she’s made repeatedly.

Miko Grimes is surprisingly candid, which gives us a view of the inner workings of the NFL we usually don’t get.
    ——————————-
I dont think so man. She has an agenda, and she likely is embellishing a lot of her “facts”. Al other reports seem to refute the fact that we tried matching the offer, and Grimes himself said he wanted to stay with the team.

I can guaranteed were there a match between money offered, Grimes would have stayed i Miami, UNLESS, of course Miko truly does rule the roost there. She is the one with the problem with the team, because the team didnt put up with the bullshit that comes with her mouth and because instead of throwing more money at him like she continuously claimed they owed him, they asked him to take a pay-cut.

You also have to keep in perspective, they had him under contract, they didn’t have to make any offers to him if they really wanted to keep him.

The only thing you get from her isnt a behind the scenes look at the league, its a behind the scenes look at her racist agenda.

Pretty rough week overall. Just go back from the shore, was there since Tuesday. I originally went to help my B-I-L to help with my F-I-L because he now has a colostomy bag for the rest of his life. You learn how much you care about someone when you have to help them with that. It really kills their independence and it’s sad. My M-I-L is in a rehab facility but should be him this week, that will be an interesting dynamic with both of them home. Then I found out my step-dad had to have his gallbladder removed the Tuesday I was heading down so I had to deal with that first with my Mom. He’s doing fine and is home but has some discomfort which is normal. Heading back down on Wednesday for the holiday and to continue to help anyway I can.

Moral of the story, enjoy everyday you have in this life because it can change in a flash especially as you age.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Damn Tim – Best wishes to all your ailing family members. I agree with your sentiment, but humans have a difficult time with that concept. I suppose in some ways it’s a defense mechanism, our ability to forget, both bad things, and good things, like trying to keep in mind how lucky we are every day we’re healthy.

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Thanks guys and I’m not searching for sympathy or anything, just speaking reality and how quick it can multiply with the elders. Until my F-I-L can get his strength back and do all of it on his own which he may never be able to do, the bag has to be emptied every 3-4 hours so we do shifts so others can get some sleep. He does most of it but he needs someone there to assist and watch over him. If it doesn’t get any better for my in-laws, my F-I-L with this and my M-I-L is battling pancreatic cancer – and we all know what that means, assisted living and worse is where this is headed. They’re both 86 years old but still have their minds so they still want to live but that may be waning due to guilt. It’s really sad.

I just wanted to share how quickly things can change. I’ve worked for a marketing and advertising agency specializing in senior healthcare for over a decade and now I’m living what I’ve been been working on all that time. It’s just kind of surreal but I guess it’s really not. It’s part of the cycle of life as we know it. Just seeing how many people it affects was kind of the eye opener.

I really like these pieces by the Phinsider

I cannot imagine being able to process all this information in a few seconds before the snap. Especially with the offensive players trying to mask and conceal what they are doing.

    • D's avatar D says:

I read that earlier, it definitely was a good explanation of the different defensive looks a QB can see and how they are supposed to expose it and then take advantage of the weaknesses of each scheme. That is one area Tanny needs to really grow, the pre-snap reads because it would really help his overall ability to get through his reads if he knows that a scheme has put limitations on some of the routes.

Sorry to hear that Tim. I hope that your MIL doesn’t suffer, and that she goes quickly before that assisted living place sucks up everything they’ve worked for all of their lives. I’ve instructed my wife to just let me die if we’re ever in a situation where I’m being kept alive when I should be gone. I’ll instruct my kids to do the same when they are older. My wife and I are working our asses off now so we can have a better retirement and leave or kids with something. I’ll be damned if the assisted living facilities or hospitals will take away everything we have worked for our entire lives.

That’s when I first learned that “DELTA” stands for “Don’t Ever Leave The Airport!” After all 4 of our parents passed, my oldest sister passed away just a few months later. An unexpected 8-hour delay in Atlanta caused me to arrive in Ft. Lauderdale about an hour after her funeral (instead of 6 hours BEFORE her funeral.) I actually could have DRIVEN from central Ohio faster than I got there by plane! But I decided to fly because of the icy roads. I’ve decided when people say the phrase “quite honestly”, no matter who they are, I find I want to smack them right in the face, hard. I think it sounds so phony coming out of just about every person’s mouth I’ve heard utter it, it’s a smarmy expression, one I think people are trying to sound intelligent saying, and I think it needs to go.

Last one to use the word “quite” well was Commander McBragg

  27. D's avatar D says:

I get what you are going through Tim. Its difficult sometimes seeing your parents/loved ones start to fall apart like that and yeah sometimes it does seem to turn on a dime. My father in law passed away about a month ago now. I watched his last heartbeat on the monitor. He had begun to slide a bit for past few years, health wise, but for the most part still wasn’t dire.

About a month before he died, he went into the hospital with severe back pain and the Dr’s had pretty much said he had a couple things going on but felt it was pretty mcuh just something they could treat and he would be out soon. Well from there he started having labored breathing so they had to put him on a ventilator, then they had to intubate and therefore had to severely sedate him to prevent him from pulling it out, he basically was in a induced coma at that point. My wife visited him and the Dr’s still thought it was still ok and they just get the breathing thing under control and treat him for the other.

The last day when my wife was going to the hospital to visit they asked her for permission to trach him, since the method of intubation they were using was at its limit. He went from that to dead within like 6 hours. Organs started failing, BP spiked through the roof, was very very fast. That was one of the hardest things i have had to do in my life was to watch him pass away, and simultaneously watch my wife lose her first parent.

Its a very fragile thing, life i mean. Really makes you thankful for the time you have, even if it is currently feels like a burden to do so. Spend as much time with them as ya can man, it could be gone in a blink.

quite honestly is a little bit like “to be honest” which is another one I don;t really kike

    • D's avatar D says:

I use them, more when i type than when i speak though. Part of it is text sometimes doesnt come off right nad sometime you want to set the tone of your writing not to be misinterpreted, so quite honestly is basically saying, like you said, i dont mean to offend, but this is how i feel….

It is kind of redundant though if you have established yourself as an honest person that it wouldnt need to be said, so i guess its also based a lot of the audience you are talking to/writing to as a way to assure them, you mean what you are saying and that you have no intentions of saying this just for agenda reasons.

I really dont see the harm in it, but given how its used, and the audience it was used in, i think makes it make less sense and/or be unnecessary and maybe telling of their trust level with whomever they are talkingto/writing with,

  38. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The origin of the word “kike” seems so harmless, although people used it as a slur. Jewish immigrants coming to Ellis Island didn’t want to sign the forms next to the “X”, because they thought it was a cross, so they made a circle instead, and the word circle in Yiddish is “kikel”, so that’s why they called Jews “kikes”
    .

    • D's avatar D says:

      Quite honestly…..LOL

JBB, but that is interesting. I personally have a theory that any word use to delineate a group of people as different, outsiders, is a slur in the making. It wouldnt have mattered was it Kike or Drumpf if they were to say those drumpfs and mean it like “those people” it eventually starts being used to be associated with the stereotyping characteristics of “those people” and then become a slur that encompasses all negative things being said about them.

Origins of several “slur” words are generally very innocent, so its not really the word but the hearts of the people that twist the words to give them unintended meaning thats at the core of a slur or any negative word, curse words included.

I have seen that one before. They actually have videos of people who stand back there behind the planes on purpose, on top of those guard rails, to see how far they will get punted by the force of the exhaust.

There is another one where the landing strip is so short they pretty much have to have tires on the runway as soon as they can get them so the incoming flights are so low that you can practically touch the planes if you stand on the right spot and climb up on the protective railing. Seems like it might be the same airports as the one in the video above.

Another one in Japan that has since been shut down had such an odd trajectory for landing and such wicked cross winds they actually have to begin landing at an angle to the runway and at the last minuted before touchdown, straighten it up.

  53. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you look at how we reconstructed the defense this offseason along with some vets we already had, the moves were all win now mode. This isn’t a build for the future defense. Whether they’re good or not, that’s how I see it.

    • D's avatar D says:

Given the defense we will run, if our LB’s and DE’s do well, we need to keep them. They need to be priority signs.

Cameron if he shows well this year needs to be a priority re-sign, because hw will be a vital part of Gase’s offense. Even if Stills balls out, i wouldnt make him a priority sign, but id probably make a pretty strong push to re-sign.

Backup RB’s will be easy enough to replace in draft or FA. The rotation/backup OL wouldnt be a priority, though if Bushrod really performs well i might make a big push to re-sign him.

Id try hard to kep the LB’s and DE’s if they do well as a unit. Wide 9, those are the cornerstones of being able to run wide 9, and they wont be easily replaced. We do need to think about getting a replacement for Misi though, he really isnt athletic enough to be a good fit. We will see how it goes but i don’t expect him here in 2017, and id bet we will be looking at a replacement for him in the first couple of rounds of next years draft. Maybe Beckwith or Reeves-Maybin.

D, what I’m saying is most of the DL is in it’s prime or even headed towards the twilight of their careers in a couple of years. The core is going to be a vet group, not really too much youth at the top end.

The LBs are interesting, both Jenkins and Alonso will be UDFAs next year. I get you there.

The secondary starters are all vets with the exception of one corner spot.

There is a lot of big money invested in this defense. If they fail after 2 seasons I see them cleaning house. The same with the offense which is younger and that should not happen to them – there is good young talent here. But some of them are going to want to be paid in the next few coming years.

The problem is we got REALLY hot down the strech and into the playoffs last season. We overacheived hitting wise, and it’s tough to duplicate that. It doesn’t help that Murphy is putting up MVP numbers in Washington either.

I liked Murphy, but thought he was expendable. His defense was weak, and he made some bizarre decisions at times, important times too. No way did I expect him to hit like he’s hitting right now. It’s amazing to me that the recent pickups are doing well, getting big hits (Kelly Johnson, James Loney), but everyone else is struggling. Reyes may help a little, but we need to get Gourriel, or maybe trade for a legit slugging 3B.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I didn’t think Murph would be hitting this well either. Loney’s defense is really suspect though. He’s botched more than his fair share of big plays since his arrival. I don’t even know if Reyes is going to make the team. He’s a shell of his former self.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

You really think Loney’s defense is bad? I thought he made a couple of huge plays so far, especially that pickup on that 3rd strike where d’Arnaud threw a wild throw on a hop, and Loney scooped the wide throw and somehow stayed on the base.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

He’s made mental errors that have been costly. I didn’t notice some of them until Hernandez pointed them out.

  69. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Until they make a big move, Reyes will be here, because he can bat leadoff, and is at least a base stealing threat, and may be the only 1st to 3rd guy on the team. I can’t stand the station to station mentality we have right now. No stolen bases, no sacrifice bunts, no hit and run, nothing. Pathetic!

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Nope, and it’s been like that all year. The majority of the games we won were becuase of the long ball. That doesn’t last throughout a season typically.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hernandez was a gold glove fielder, and he always points out defensive deficiencies. I think Loney has done more than we should have expected.

Brian, I remember that episode the Doobie’s were on and that line. LOL

Every time I turn a Mets game on a little late they are either up 1-0 early and blow it or they have 0″s on the board all night. It’s just not competitive baseball outside of the pitching.

    —————————————————–
From a couple of things i have heard with regards to VJ and his defensive philosophies, if they fail to get it done over next couple of years, i believe you are right, they will clean house or at the very least move to a 3-4.

With wide 9 philosophy, they wouldn’t necessarily have to shed players, as much as they would move them around some. You still want the same kind of athletic traits running a 3-4 wide 9 as a 4-3 wide 9, you just shift your focus from DL to the LB’ers. I think Kiko would stay at middle, Jenkins would also be a middle, but they would want to add a couple of hybrid DE/OLB type to man the outside, and those would need to be elite level players. I think Suh would move out to DE in that case and Phillips would man the NT position.

I think we have the players maybe minus a lb’er or 2, to make this change, so i think if we fail this year in a 4-3 they will move to a 3-4 before they start cleaning house.

Its excessive imo, but so are most QB contracts these days so i dont think it carries the shock value you would expect, unless its your team shelling out the money, so better idea of the reaction to the size of it probably comes from Indy fans.

I don’t have much to say regarding Luck’s contract extension other than he’s not worth it IMO. NONE of these guys are worth 20-25 million per year. 1.4 Mil per game?

I will not get into that stats that show he is not in the top 5 or top 10 QB’s in the league ‘cuase stats mean nothing per some on here and all that matters is he wins….(of course It’s a team win and not one player)
