Things That Make Hulk Angry Before Season Even Start

By Dr. Bruce Banner

So season no start yet and here I am sitting around, breathing becoming more labored, palms getting sweaty, fists pounding table and generally feeling the need to smash something. Hulk already getting angry and we have not played a down of meaningful football yet. Here is what Hulk is already getting angry about:

The schedule. Hulk know no one can control schedule and there is nothing you really can do about it. But that no mean Hulk can’t be angry about it. 3 of first 4 games on road against playoff teams. Hulk knows NFL history that teams that start 0-2 very unlikely to make playoffs. Teams that start 1-3 not much better. Hulk just no want to see Phins season over before September ends. Hulk tired of the year’s football highlight being the draft. Hulk want team to be playing meaningful football in December and even better in January. In order to do that we have to play meaningful football in September. That may be a tall order with rookie head coach and lots of change over in personnel.

Hulk angry that our RB roster looks more like a MASH unit than NFL depth chart at the position. Our starter is Arian Foster who right now is held together by duct tape and safety pins. He had moments in pre-season but definitely looks a step slower than he has been. Our backup is Jay Ajai who has no cartilage in his knee. He also looked very tentative running the ball in pre-season. Behind those two we have Kenyan Drake and Isiah Pead. Both flashed playmaking ability but both also flashed hamstring injuries in pre-season. That leaves only Damien Williams as the only healthy option at RB and he inspires little fear in opposing defenses.

What makes Hulk angriest of all is that after last season’s abysmal linebacker play we are set to be just as bad again this season. Our only move to remedy what was one of the worst linebacker corps in the league was to bring in an oft injured Kiko Alonzo. Watching Alonzo in pre-season he looks undersized and covers the side line to side line with all the speed and grace of a pregnant yak. With the exception of 1 game our linebackers have been exposed all pre-season in both run defense and pass coverage. Unless our defense plays better we could be in for another long season. This make Hulk very angry and season no even start yet.

  1. There’s a different vibe with this team this year and I feel it’s due to the new coaching staff. I remember last season before a game the team was huddled at the endzone and they were lifeless. No leaders, no leadership. They had no emotion.
When you watch the guys on the sideline they’re involved, the coaches are involved and players and coaches are constantly interacting with one another.
Didn’t see this last season. You see RT talking to Gase and other players talking to coaches during the games and the players are playing with emotion on the field.
Having talent means nothing if you can’t bring that talent out and that’s why I say the team is going 10-6 this season. The team has as much, if not more, talent than it had last season. Personally, I think it’s a better team talent-wise than last season but that’s my opinion.
The previous coaching staff didn’t bring the talent out of the players but you look at these guys and what they’ve done thru the preseason and you can see a difference. Did we stop teams cold on D? No. Did we score on every offensive possession? No. But, what I mean is these guys played to their ability. You didn’t see guys coming out and going thru the motions. You even saw Suh, who’s usually pretty reserved in preseason, body slam a rb on a tackle. He’s already in regular season form.
You can see a difference in the way Phillips played. I was even impressed with Misi compared to the past. And then there’s the pass blocking of the 0-line. Yeah, it’s preseason but this team always had trouble pass blocking; preseason or not.
So, I agree that the coaches make a huge difference and I’m sticking with my 10-6

Lot’s of good stuff in there and a lot of ways to look at circumstances.

My hope is Gase, Tannehill and a bunch of core guys go for a 3-4 year ride rather than us constantly changing everything over. It gets exhausting after a while.

Even if we don’t get to a SB, I’ll take 3 out of 4 playoff seasons and a couple of wins. Seriously! That at least helps you feel it’s possible. Missing the playoffs every year makes you think the same thing will happen again and that sucks!

If Gase helps get this team to the playoffs this year he will be a God… at least for awhile. LOL

He’s been playing a high level of football in college and he’s impressed the coaches thus far. If he’s the best player he plays. That’s always how it should work. Let’s hope we landed a big time corner. Until I see otherwise, I’m rolling with it.

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s not the end all, but this SEA game is a big test for me personally as a fan. If we lose 30-10 I’m gonna fell like nothing has changed fair or not. If we then go to NE and win 27-20 I’ll feel better but the -Brady stigma will be there. If we lose in NE in any way it will feel like every other year against good teams, we just can’t do it. If it’s a close competitive game in SEA but still a loss I’ll feel better but still. If we win both games… fuck yeah! LOL

That’s where my psyche is at.

    • I’m expecting them to look like a professional football team and not the group from the Island of Misfit Football Players they were last season.

Do you mean like the team where Eric Decker runs free down the field with nobody in sight? LOL

That’s the kind of BS that made me bail on games knowing it was over way too early. It wasn’t even competitive and it wasn’t fun. I can handle a hard fought loss and we lose it late. But not showing up and playing like you’re just going through the motions is nonsense.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Oddsmakers are really making it tempting cause I see Miami maybe losing a close one in the 4th qtr @ Sea, then bounce back to beat NE before coming home to trounch the Browns!

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

…but I know what you’re saying Son…I too hope Tanny & the team can find ways to hold onto leads, or to pull games out late….need to close the deal in close games.
But it’s a fine line all around the league.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think you should wait until we see how all 3 units look. We really don’t know what it’s going to look like. As of right now we have 5 new starters on defense and 4-5 on offense (very young WRs) and two rookies in the return game. We’ve never seen this team play.

I feel somehow some way they have to get to 3-3 so they keep themselves in it while they figure each other out. 5 of those games are AFC and one division. You have plenty of time and ways to have a good season from there. Shit the bed early and it’s going to be a long season.

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

3 of the first 4 games are on the road….ugh! Would be nice to come away no worse than 2-2, otherwise the hole starts to grow deep.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes but then two home. That doesn’t even matter though. To be a good team you have to be good on the road. It’s a football game, play better you win. The Chiefs started off last year 1-5 and won the next 10 and then their 1st playoff game. Weird shit happens in this game. Talent is a big part of it but it’s also because of mentality. That team said fuck this and scratched and clawed. I don’t know WTF we did last year.

  12. Tim @ 9:26,
That’s why I made a comment about Gase and this staff having the team much better prepared to play than the previous staff. Preseason or not, those guys last year looked like they were out of their element playing most teams. Even in preseason.
We didn’t see the blown assignments or the mistakes on offense with the huge number of false starts we saw last season plus the defensive penalties. Again, it was only preseason, but we saw a lot of different mistakes in preseason last year and shrugged it off as preseason but we didn’t see a lot of that this year.

Think about this. Phins finished ’15 w/Albert, Thomas, Douglas, Turner, Fox as their o-line.

  20. D's avatar D says:

This is how I see Misi.

If we had a stud at MLB, I think Misi is solid enough at SLB to protect the outside. He isn’t great in man coverage but he can maintain his zone well enough to be pretty close to a solid but not special 3 down LB at that spot. He is absolutely not the level player we need at MLB in this defense and he cannot run sideline to sideline well enough to be a great fit at SLB. He has good tackling technique so he doesn’t miss tackles often, and has decent instincts.

When/if Alonzo acclimates to the defense, of LB corp should be solid. If we target an OLB in the draft Misi can go back to being what ultimately be would be considered very good at, which is solid vet depth, with versatility to fill in at 2 LB spots, and possibly a rotational guy to fill in on run downs.

He is the epitome of average but consistent.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think Reuben Foster right now is best fit for us, to replace Misi out of the LBs I see, though I haven’t begun anything in depth outside of SEC yet. If I was replacing Alonzo, I’d still target a guy like Reeves-maybin or Foster, but also look to add a guy like Beckwith and try to resign Jenkins.

  21. D's avatar D says:

Btw those in Toba’s fantasy football league, draft is this afternoon. I think there were empty spots left last time I looked. for those still wanting in maybe there is time to mail Toba for an invitation

  22. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

To answer your question, Tannenbaum is numbers guy, and that’s what he was hired for with the Jets. He did a lousy job of it there too, and that’s what got him fired. So you think that makes him more qualified to run the whole show, eh? Good luck with that! Now he’ll be running the show AND doing the numbers, that same thing he screwed up with the Jets. I’m concerned, and rightfully so.

    • D's avatar D says:

I don’t think you should ever mix cap management with personnel decisions. One should balance the other. It should be a checks and balances kinda system so that over spending or under spending won’t be as likely

      • D's avatar D says:

That wasn’t a shot at Tannenbaum either, I’d say that for any team with any GM or executive of player personnel. They shouldn’t also be managing to cap. Sponge was good but she wanted to move on to a different job and Ross was smart to retain her in another venture.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Well, just because we decided to throw a shiny new title on TBomb, it doesn’t make him any more qualified. It’s not a big deal now, it just will be when he screws up, whenever that may happen.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The question was simply, what do you mean they do the same job? How you took that, that I thought he was more qualified is beyond me. Doing the numbers job is over for this year, I’d think/hope we’D bring someone else in after the season. I’d don’t like Tannenbaum in control of the cap

  23. There’s reason to be optimistic about the first 2 games of the season. Catching teams at the right time is a good thing and the Phins could be catching both the Seahawks and the Pats at the right time.
The Seahawks will most likely be going into game 1 without the services of Jimmy Graham and Thomas Rawls. If they do, it’s a huge plus not having to deal with either. However, even if both were to play, they would most likely be limited to the amount of playing time either receives.
Graham is still recovering from knee surgery and the Seahawks have been bringing him along slowly. So, if he plays, he would most likely be limited but the chances of him being active for Sunday’s game isn’t good.
Rawls broke and ankle and suffered torn ligaments on Dec 13th and has been limited thru camp and the preseason. He’s still getting into football shape and his conditioning isn’t where the team would like it to be. So, rather than risk and injury because of not being ready, there’s also a strong possibility he will be inactive as well. Even if he plays, he would most likely be extremely limited to the amount of carries he receives.
Going into wk 2, the Pats are looking at the suspension of Brady and Ninkovich will will cause both to miss the game. In addition, the team also has other players who will not see the field due to injury.
Jimmy G is definitely not the threat to tear a defense apart in the passing game that Brady is and if the Phins are able to stop the Pats from running the ball successfully it could be a tough day for the Pats offense.
Playing two games on the road to start against traditionally tough teams is no easy task but circumstances being what they are it looks like we could be catching both teams at the right time.

I had it done back in 2000, I don’t remember it hurting that much. Asshole wanted more room to work

  30. Boulder,
I would agree with you about getting used to new scheme and new coaching staff but, as I’ve stated before, this coaching staff is getting things done. Unlike the previous staff where we’d need to go weeks before seeming to get into gear I don’t see that being the case this season.
I made a comparison of Gase to Harbaugh recently and I believe this is what we’ve got. I’m ready for a huge turnaround in Miami and that’s the way I see it.
This team is going to surprise a lot of people including fans who are skeptical this year because of all the mediocrity we’ve seen. Change can happen in an instant. This coaching staff has this team playing like a completely different team. We will compete and we WILL win 10 games this season.

Stay on those cleanings. Perio disease will put you in dentures if you don’t keep it in check.

Also, agree with you on Tannenbaum. I wasn’t a fan of how he ran things in NY and it seems to be more of the same here. Every team should hoard draft assets and build with an eye to the future. I hate the win now approach. It rarely works and almost always hurts you in future years.

No clue what to expect from this team. I’m praying the defense stays healthy and has a different attitude and approach this year. Skeptical they can hold teams below 21 ppg, but we will see. I feel like the offense will improve…. We’ve probably averaged around 19 ppg throughout Tannehill’s career and that’s clearly not good enough. 23-25 ppg would be a big jump, but I think it’s possible. I have liked Gase so far. Need to see how he manages games, team morale, and what adjustments he’s able to make throughout the season. His personality and repore with the team look great thus far though.

Excited for football! Rough way to start, but 2-2 would be a great accomplishment and give us a chance to be in the playoff hunt.

Im similar, i hate the dentist, i have had panic attacks getting the oral shots they have to give you to get work done. No so much the pain as much as the act of them fishing it around under the gums….. Still i will say that making sure you stay on top of it is crucial. Infections in your mouth can both spread to your brain and heart, potentially causing very serious issues with either. So even if you dont care, vanity wise, you really need to for your overall health. Didn’t you have a heart thing not too long back?

Id expect they might use Hunter on a couple of deep targets but primarily they will want him for red zone snaps.

  48. Take a look at Hunter’s targets and catches over his first 3 seasons. You see a guy with major concentration issues. Last yr he fractured an ankle in wk 10 vs Carolina so there’s not a full season to go off but I’m not expecting him to have the light come on any time soon.
Going to him in the redzone isn’t something I’d look forward too even with his ability to outleap a defender because his catch % sucks so bad. I don’t know so much I’d want to rely on him until he proves he can become reliable.

They’re not gonna worry about anybody on our team running a deep route unless we actually hit a couple. They’ll come out, press the LOS to stop the run, pressure us hard and force the quick, short shit. It’ll be interesting to see how Gase calls the beginning of this game. Does he go out and attack deep early and try to back them off or play it safe and take what they give us? Can we hit the deep play for it to even matter?

    • well, when teams have success in an area they usually don’t mess with things that work. so, to me, Gase has the upper hand because Seattle is going to have tendencies on defense no matter what. IMO, Gase comes out in a certain formation expecting to see Seattle do a certain thing on D and if he see’s it he knows he’s right. If he continues to see Seattle do what he’s expecting for the most part he knows how to attack it.
Whether they’re successful attacking it is another thing because everyone needs to do their jobs on offense but Gase definitely has the upper hand in terms of game planning for this one.
Same can be said for Joseph. Seattle is basically the same team offensively and you can actually look at it and say they may even be limited to a certain extent with Lynch retiring and Graham maybe not playing.
Add to that the fact that we showed NOTHNG of what we’re about on either side of the ball in preseason and the Seahawks can’t even gameplan for this team. The offense and defense are completely different from last season and Seattle hasn’t got a clue as to what we will do on either side of the ball. Edge to Gase and his staff.

Seahawks first-round RG Germain Ifedi left Wednesday’s practice with an ankle injury.
The severity of his injury is unclear. Ifedi was slated to open the year as Seattle’s starting right guard. Third-round pick Rees Odhiambo would be a candidate to fill in for Ifedi if he has to miss Sunday’s opener against the Dolphins.

So, a first year HC with a team that’s been average or worse for years has the advantage over one of the best defenses in the league for years on a team that’s been competing for championships? At their place? In one of the toughest places to play with unbelievable crowd noise? In the first game of the season when the fans will be nuts? I love your optimism. You were right about one thing though. Our players need to make plays, or it won’t matter….sorta like it always comes down to execution. Lol

Plus, Gase has been calling plays for years in the league. He has tendencies. It’ll be interesting what he does with this team though. I’m curious to see what he does. What he thinks we do well. Who he trusts.

    • The team has the talent to compete with the Seahawks. Execution will be key and the coaching staff can elevate a team to a different level. Did anyone expect Harbaugh to take San Fran to a 13-3 record in his first season?

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think yes – it’s very possible he breaks the top 10 in qb rating

He’s not really that far off

Personally I expect hm to be farther along than he has shown himself to be so far
So I think it’s possible he steps it up this year

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

He has to be if we want to be a playoff team. I think he has the horses to do it he has to take a step this year. $64 question- can he/will he?

      • correct to both. oinks. we’re having a debate on Twitter with the “experts” who have their own blogs and podcasts who are saying he could be a top 12 and if he is we get 8 or 9 wins.
However, if he’s a top 12 qb in rating this season it would mean the entire O has done it’s job and that means we’re winning more than 8 or 9 games. At a minimum we win 10 but I’d say strong possibility we’re also a playoff team.
Tannehill was the 21st ranked qb as far as his rating was concerned last season. If he hits top 12-15 we’re a minimum 10 win team. Have to be. No way we can’t be. Especially top 12.

SAID GOOD-BYE to a dear friend today. Of course, he was a hard core Dolphins fan.
    ————
My wife and I finally relocated back in Florida late December of 2008. I was ecstatic to be back in the Sunshine State after spending a total of 20 years combined in Colorado, Ohio and Texas. After a few weeks on the job in Tampa, I noticed a sports bar less than half a mile from my office. One day I decided to take that walk across Dale Mabry highway to “Prime Time Sports Bar.” –That little walk changed my life forever. There were about a dozen to fifteen “characters seated at the bar, almost all of whom ranged in age from the 40’s through the 70’s. Perhaps the oldest guy there noticed my Dolphins’ shirt and invited me to sit in the empty seat beside him. He told me he had lived in Miami from the mid-’60’s through most of the ’70’s. He saw the early years (when we “stunk” as he put it). He also saw the glory years, including THE PERFECT SEASON!
10 minutes into our conversation I knew I had found a serious friend! For the next eight years, we’d meet at this sports bar, eat lunch, and discuss the great issues of the day with the dozen or so “regulars” who were there most week days around 11:30-12:30. I found out this man, like me, could remember many of the incredible games of the early ’70’s. He, like me, served in the U.S. Army. He, like me, moved to Florida to get away from brutal northern winters. He, like me, was “FLORIDA” through and through (except that one week a year when he and his wife would return to Kentucky for the big family get-together). He was a Kentucky Wildcat alum, and damn proud of it. He thrilled me with amazing stories about the legendary players and coaches that have been a part of Kentucky basketball. Just last week, he said he was at UK when Dan Issel was there. “Dan had a new Corvette someone bought for him. “He always had a pretty girl in the seat beside him,” said my friend, whose first name was Bill. But “Issel didn’t make it to the classroom very often, nor did the rest of the basketball team,” he said. I could go on and on about our 8 years worth of conversations but, rest assured, the Dolphins’ franchise was our most frequent subject, even in a bar in Tampa! Bill was somewhat confident that this upcoming season would be a winning one for Dolfans everywhere. To back it up, he said he’d bet me his usual $1 bet that Miami would have a winning season this year. I said, “I’ll bring in my buck on Wednesday and we’ll discuss it.” But Bill never made it. Shockingly, a mutual friend told me Bill had passed away late Friday and there would be services on Wednesday (today). About a year ago I told Bill I had a favor to ask him. I said “If you out live me and make it to my funeral, would you please wear a shirt with a Dolphins’ logo on it?” He answered, “I will on one condition.” What’s the condition?” I asked. He said, I’ll agree to do it if YOU will agree to wear a Dolphins shirt to MY funeral!”–“DEAL,” I responded. So, today, under my dark blue blazer, was a dark shirt with a small Dolphins logo on my left shirt pocket. I showed it to his beloved wife. She said “That’s just what Bill would have wanted.” I gave her a big hug. And she promised to make an occasional visit to the sports bar. I told her Bill’s reserved seat, located right in front of an inlaid photo of Dan Marino, would always be waiting for her.

    Prof Lou

Philip rivers was 12th last season with 93.8
And the Chargers weren’t very good

Tannehill had a rating of 88.7

    The difference is 5.1 points
I’m not sure what that is: a couple more tds, a couple less ints

I think the difference may be slim and is not the difference between being a contender or not

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Team game….the Bolts Defense stunk as bad as ours or worse. Their OL sucked too.

    • Again, oinks to both. Very good points. However, when you’ve got a top 12 qb in rating it usually means the O as a whole is moving the ball and scoring points. Keeps pressure on opposing D’s and keeps your D off the field.
No coincidence the top 12 qb’s in most cases also had the top scoring D’s in the league also. To me, it all goes hand in hand.
But, so you understand what I’m saying here, the qb rating is indicative of the offense as a whole. It, in most cases, says the O has done it’s job. Not just the qb.
They are some of the better rushing teams and highest scoring teams in the league. It also means they are among the league leaders in time of possession.
So, if Tannehill is a top 12 qb in terms of rating this year, there’s a strong possibility we are a playoff contender.

Tannehill needs to make the plays when they’re there. Bitch about the OL, his receivers, the coaching all you like, but there were plays there to be made last year and he couldn’t make them. I love the idea of expecting a libertarian who believes fundmentally in nonintervention in world affairs what his plan is to intervene in another country’s refugee problem? Where is the logic to that. He should not know or care about Aleppo and either should the US. If you criticize A libertarian for not being familiar with foreign intervention you don’t understand libertarian politics. Its the only policy that advocates for keeping out of world affairs.

I’m much more concerned about a candidates inclination to create more American debt, which Trump and Clinton will create hundreds of billions more of, then what a candidate plans to do about Syrian refugees.

Let’s keep spinning the idea that these topics that will never affect you or take precedent over our pending bankruptcy.

Oh how ignorant of Gary Johnson not to care about Aleppo…We need a candidate who has been prepped by group of advisors about Aleppo, so they can propose how to spend tax payers money to fix another’s country’s problem. No thanks.

This is something we should really step way back from for now. Unfortunately for us we do have to get involved in world affairs being part of this world, but we way too often get involved in this we didnt have to and didnt need to, and we do it for political reasons not truly humanitarian ones.
