Q – So do you think that the “NEW” offense that the Fins have been running is Portable?

Can The Fins Storm through the Chargers the way Trump torpedoed the Democratic Party?

Absolutely portable! I think this type of offense can play anywhere, especially colder weather. This offense is built for the playoffs, although I take pause to say that we’re going to be in the playoffs, there’s a long haul to get there. Still, any team that run the ball like we have is ready for anything. What we need to see, as painful as it may be, is what happens if the run game is completely shut down. Can Ryan TannEhill, the O-line, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Devante Parker and whoever we have at TE make the opposing defense pay for selling out on the run. That remains to be seen. Tannehill and the offense has done enough with continued success running the ball, but we haven’t seen the passing elevated to lofty heights yet. In the last 3 wins, Tannehill has 2 TD’s and no INT’s, a good sign that with no turnovers, yet we’re basically following the KC mantra, don’t turn the ball over, and do enough to win.

I have to admit, I’m not especially confident that Tannehill can win a game by lighting up the scoreboard, but SD is a team that has been relatively stingy against the run, but a sieve in the pass game. Now, stats are always skewed that way, because when a weakness is exploited, such as the Chargers don’t defend the pass well, teams will forego the run, and just throw on them, so the run defense will appear statistically better than it might be. We’ll see what the real deal is Sunday. I think we both know that we will be determined to run the ball, and will try to do so as much as we can, unless SD jumps way ahead, and forces our hand. That will be up to not turning the ball over, and the defense keeping us in, as they have the last 3 wins. Melvin Gordon will test our run defense, he’s been tearing it up. Gordon is 3rd in the league in rushing yards (768), and leads the league in rushing attempts (193), which shows you their commitment to the run. To give you perspective on how hard they lean on Gordon, the closest RB in attempts on the Chargers is Danny Woodhead, who is injured, with 19 rushes, and then Kenneth Farrow with 15. Gordon is their rushing offense, in addition to catching 28 passes for 284 yards. He’s a HUGE part of their offense, as Ajayi has been for us.

Q – Just wondering if you could help me with this. With the elation of knowing that “crooked cankles” will NOT be the president of this fine nation, and the joy of witnessing coach GASE turn this franchise around, to the point of the Dolphins WINNING again……how does one remove this smile from one’s face?

You don’t really want the answer, do you?

This road trip is critical for our team, we need to keep the (J) train rolling, and need to keep winning to stay relevant and alive in a run to the playoffs. I suppose we’re going to lose eventually, but a loss in SD would really hurt our team, especially if other teams like the Ravens, Colts, Chiefs and Broncos win. That would put us behind the 8-ball, and at 4-4, we need to keep winning. O-line and defense need to continue playing at a very high level, and if they do, that smile is gonna be there for a long time brother!

We can all see Gase gets it, his players now get HIM, and he KNOWS our strengths and weaknesses to the point he can game plan accordingly. It worked at home, and I truly believe it can work on the road too, as I explained to Wyo above. This is not the same ol’ Dolphins, we’re a different animal (mammal?) right now.

Congratulations to President elect Donald Trump, it’s his time to bring the country together, to bring us to better times, strengthen our military, our trade, and therefore our economy. America has spoken, now it’s time for Trump to come through. This country needs to stay united, not divided. I hope he can achieve that as well as all the other goals he has set forth.

Q – Hey Mikey

Trump, in the UK, is a synonym for fart (though mainly used in very polite circles or to the very young). I noticed that when Omar tweets about the unicorns, he has an image of one galloping into the distance with a gas burner coming from the tail area. I took this to be an omen that Jay will take off and plough through the SD D with another monster game. Is this how you would read these tea leaves?

PS If you need any help with unicorn physiology, Herd may be able to shed some light from her experience with Bridget.

Thanks as always

UK

UK, I wonder what what the perception is across the puddle is about our newly elected President. Are you all nervous? Terrified? Looking forward to dealing with a non-politician?

Anyway . . . That was a pretty cool photo that Herd put up there. I saw it earlier on the day on FB, and was wondering if maybe there were a red and blue deer to follow shortly, in honor of President elect Trump. Or, maybe not.

I think as long as O-line remains healthy, and Ajayi as well, he will find and exploit whatever holes the O-line gives him, against just about any defense. That’s the beauty of it, if you run block well enough, and you stay committed to running, the holes will come, and honestly, Ajayi makes teams pay every time he finds one, because unlike the formerly beloved Lamar Miller, who went down as soon as contact was made, Ajayi is a brawler, who who’s physicality and awesome stiff arm makes him difficult to bring down. Yes, MillerTime had more speed, but I’ll take the way Ajayi runs over Miller every and any day of the week, especially Sunday!

UK, I figure just about every time #23 gets 20 + carries, he’s going to crack the century mark, or close to it, and that’s a formula for success. As we football fans instinctively know, it gives you a time of possession advantage, it keeps the defense rested, and therefore, the defense plays better. It’s a win-win every time.

Please feel free to let me know what the Queen and her loyal subjects think of the Donald, and what you guys think our country (and the rest of world) are in for. I’m extremely curious, and I know I can look it up on the interwebs, but I want to hear it from you personally. Mike Asks . . .

Q – Mike,
The AFC West has some strong contenders for the WC spots. IMO, we need to beat SD this week in case it comes down to a tiebreaker. Trump had a near impossible road to the presidency, yet won. Can you map out a Dolphins playoff berth, so we can Make the NFL Great Again?

Brian in NY

.
I completely agree that we have to beat SD, but really, even if it was CLE again, we’d have to win that game too. At 4-4, we have very little room for error. Things can change, but at this moment, it looks pretty clear that at a minimum of 10 wins will be required to make the playoffs. The Raiders currently lead the AFC West with with 7 wins (7-2), and they are followed closely by the Chiefs (6-2) and the Broncos (6-3). The Ravens and the Colts are right now our closest contenders, so we have to keep pace, and continue to win.Winning 10 games, for those mathematically challenged (I am!) means we can only lose 2 games the rest of the way.

So let’s look at who we have left on the schedule.

2 games in Cali, this Sunday at SD, and then we go to LA to face the former St. Louis Rams, now the LA Rams. Both winnable games, but only if we continue to stay healthy, and keep up the balanced/run heavy attack. Both teams run very well in their own right, SD with Melvin Gordon, and LA with Todd Gurley (Your former man crush). SD also has the explosive Philip Rivers, who sometimes implodes too. LA may be starting Jared Goff if they lose again this week (they face the Jets in NJ). I’m predicting us to beat SD, and if LA loses this week, and we face Goff in his first start, I figure we give Goff a rude introduction to the NFL, which would put us at 6-4.

We come home after the extended Cali stay to face another Cali team, the 49ers, but we face them in our house. Unbelievable, we win our 6th straight and we sit at 7-4. We then travel to Baltimore, and face a team who in recent years has spoiled our chance at a playoff berth, but with our new rushing attack, the Ravens tough defense is physically beaten, and we return the favor by ruining their playoff chances, and vault to 8-4. OK, here comes the letdown. We come home again, but this time it’s the Arizona Cardinals visiting. We play them tough, but David Johnson the and the Cardinals defense edge us out, which leaves us at 8-5. We then travel to NJ to face the reeling Jets, who just don’t care anymore. Bryce Petty is the QB, and the young QB has been getting his lumps for a few weeks now, and they keep on coming as we have a game reminiscent of the Met Life takeover, and we win 27-3, and now go to 9-5.

At 9-5, we face the 7-7 Bills, eager for revenge, but in the end, the playoff hungry Dolphins who are now an any weather team run all over them, Ajayi nearly eclipses 200 again, and the Dolphins have 10 wins going into the final week of the season.

It comes down to a showdown with the Patriots in week 17, and luckily for us, the Patriots have already clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but like Belichick always does, he starts his best, but in the 2nd half, Beli pulls Brady, Gronk and some others, and we roll to our 11th win of the season, and get the top WC spot, followed by the Chiefs, who get the 2nd WC. So there you have it. There’s your road to the playoffs brother, all paved and nicely laid out for you.

Your thoughts?

  1. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

Thanks for your work and answers as always Mike. You asked back, so here goes ……

Firstly, both candidates are patently liars, but Donald (despite his amassed fortune) appears to be both a fool and a liar. Some of the things he says are frankly unconscionable and inexcusable and we only get to hear a fraction of it over here. Let’s see if he locks Hilary up now?

There has been an almost unanimous lukewarm reception from world leaders from what has been reported here. I think that speaks volumes.

From a trade point of view, he is clearly adept at business and promises to boost the economy. Whether this happens and is to be to Britain’s benefit or not remains to be seen, but obviously post-Brexit, this will be put to the test in the not too distant future.

From a safety point of view, I hope they give Trump the wrong codes. I wouldn’t trust him with a water pistol, let alone being commander in chief of the US armed forces. I can only pray that there are checks and balances in place to prevent a loose cannon from actually starting to fire live ammunition.

From a “special relationship” point of view (UK/US), mother Theresa (May) and “The Donald” are about as polar opposite as you could get. TM is not an iron lady like Maggie, but she doesn’t suffer fools gladly either. It will be interesting to watch that one unfold. I hope DT1 doesn’t jeopardise that.

From a personal point of view, some of the comments he has made about Muslims, women, Mexicans and a whole boat load of other topics, plus the way he has been baited on Twitter and responded suggest he doesn’t have the gravitas and personality for the job. His braggadocious nature (he denied it?!?), bullying traits and ridiculous comb-over win him few friends. His tv personality (I know it’s only a show) on the American Apprentice was an hour of self-agrandisement and is a complete turn-off to folks on this side of the water. I fear he will be widely held in contempt outside your shores by the majority, but in spite of very adverse pre-conceptions, there is still an element of a “wait-and-see” approach. No one expects him to be a great leader, but he wasn’t widely expected to win either. Plus everyone her is still a bit stunned!

Finally, he is the heaviest president since William Howard Taft, At 70 years of age, so carrying extra weight, about to take on the most difficult job in the world which will involve an unbelievable commitment in terms of time and lifestyle changes, whilst he runs a billion dollar business and has a bride half his age? I think it’s fair to say there are lots of questions being asked (the above are but a few) and lots of concerns.

PS (I know how D feels now) 😉
PPS The queen can’t have opinions.
PPPS It’s so great to feel (at least temporarily) good about the Fins again and for a big part of the reason to be a Brit 😉 😉 🙂

Thank you so much for your perspective, I appreciate you taking the time to give me a complete answer on the subject. Despite his behavior issues, I have to admit I’m a little excited to see what a person who isn’t a career politician can accomplish. I think this could really be a start of something, where people finally realize there are alternatives other than the GOP and the DEMS. I know Trump ran on the GOP, but he’s no GOP candidate, and the proof of that was how hard the GOP tried to run him out.

I would like to see multiple parties
not some one posing as one of the established parties

We should come to an election with 3-4 legitimate choices

It does us no good IMO to have an alternative if its still an adversarial setting (which occurs when there are only 2 parties)

what you need are multiple parties to truly bring reason back to politics
not just 2 parties than are different than the initial 2 parties

      that won’t get us there

My wife was saying the other day, I’m sure it wasn’t her idea per se, but we should have votes like they do for the Heisman and MLB MVP’s, where there are 1st, 2nd and 3rd place votes, so this way, if the person you really want doesn’t garner enough votes, at least your 2nd and 3rd votes may count to a candidate that does.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

To add, the problem with the 2 party system as it is, these candidates have to mold themselves to fit the agenda of each party, and are beholden to that parties wishes and demands, and although I know you don’t like Trump, unlike EVERY other candidate, he really doesn’t owe the GOP anything. He doesn’t fit their agenda on many subjects, and he still won. I think this is a good test subject to see if that can work, although you may not like the person being tested.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He’s basically controlling the direction of the GOP now
they have to follow his lead – so I agree with pat of your point

its not just a questions of compromising the broader party needs (and I think Trump did a lot of pandering to the broader party during the process)

Its the design of the two party system
        its meant to be adversarial
        Its Jacksonian politics
its been around for hundreds of years now
but in Andrew Jackson days – there was one central issue” Federalism vs State Rights”
In a simpler time it made a little more sense

Eventually though that issue would lead to a Civil War
“The Country was very divided” – sound familiar?

If you have a system that divides people (2 parties) why is anyone surprised that the country is divided

It doesn’t matter if the principles change of one party
if there are only 2 parties in it – the path to victory is to look at one party does, and do the opposite

a vote is earned by saying “look how bad the other one is” rather than “look at my ideas”

multiple parties is the only way to stop this

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree 100% – Realistically though, it’s impossible for everyone to see eye to eye on most of the bigger issues, so even if there aren’t clear party lines, it will still be relatively adversarial.

It seems like Trump’s rhetoric resonated with a lot of good ordinary Americans ……… let’s see if the swamp does indeed get drained? We have three “mainstream parties”, but one (Liberal Democrats) has faded badly after reneging on promises and getting in bed with the tories (right) in the last coalition. As labour is out in the wilderness, we effectively only have one party at present 😦

RANDY…..you’re exactly correct about “Everyone is entitled to vote however they want”……that’s the beauty of it…..I made it no secret that I’m not a big fan of trump…….and I have no problem (what so ever) voting for a woman…….JUST NOT THAT WOMAN…..lol.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Listen there are many bigoted people about all sorts of things and that will always play a role in elections. This election to me had nothing to do with Hillary being a woman. There are some good discussions on the news going on about how this election went down and how it’s been shaping up for some time.

    • TOP SECRET's avatar TOP SECRET says:

agree…..I believe “we the people” want REAL change…..at least that’s how I read this election.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        ^^^ Both right

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The people have been tired of going back of forth between reps and dems and getting the same nonsense. These are the majority of Americans, not political types standing with one party or the other. We all know who they’re voting for. The independent moderates have the biggest voice.

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
The media were clueless before the election and they’re clueless now. But, they do now have to throw out reasons to explain why they were so clueless. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I said good discussions not bias nonsense. I summarized what they’re saying above and I think it’s pretty obvious because it happened. They voted for a non politician. We’re going to see more of this in the future especially if Trump does a good job. Ross Perot had a nice little run, Trump won the damn thing.

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

“I fear he will be widely held in contempt outside your shores by the majority,”

UK, that’s ok he is widely held in contempt INSIDE our shores by the majority also. Unfortunately for America and the world the majority doesn’t win necessarily in the US.

  49. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

My two cents on why people voted for whichever candidate is this: I’m sure there were women who voted for Hillary because she was a woman. I’m sure there were men who didn’t vote for her because she wasn’t a man. I’m sure there were people who voted for Obama in 2008 and 12 because of race. Like it or not, that’s how it is. I don’t think that’s the only reason everyone voted they way they did but there absolutely are some who did that.

Overall, I think the election turned out the way it did is because people are tired of career politicians who cut deals with whoever can help them hang on to power in spite of what might be best for their constituents. I don’t doubt that at some point in her life Hillary had high ideals and wanted to do her part to make things better. I also think at some point it changed and garnering power to further her own political career took over and she became just another career politician saying and doing whatever it took to hang on. Power corrupts. I think Trump could have said or done just about any craziness you could imagine and it wouldn’t have mattered. He didn’t play the political game by any kind of standards that up til now have influenced how people vote and he still won. I think that’s why the polls had it wrong, they were going with a model that had changed. People were just fed up with whole system and wanted change.

  50. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
I watched about 15 minutes of the media coverage of the election, so I’ll defer to you. I care more about whether or not we see some actual change. That’s really the hope i hold out after a man like trump being elected. Maybe he truly is different enough to shake things up. We’ll see.

  51. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I was told that the media had said that.
And been having some serious discussions with my in-laws from the Left Coast when they referred to me as uneducated.
But that sounded like Boulder was saying it not that he was repeating what the news said,

    I don’t even know why I care?
Other than when someone says it that I had an ounce of respect for.

    Unwashed maybe? 😉

When the rust belt – Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Indiana go blue it’s because of hardworking blue collar types. When the same states go red they’re uneducated country folk. Those are the states that swung the election and it was blue collar dems voting for Trump.

Bellwether states, like Ohio – I just found out in this election what that actually meant.

Bellwether refers to the castrated ram that they out a bell around it’s neck and it would then lead the rest of the flock. Ohio has been determining our President since 1904. Crazy!.

  55. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Rock

Trump is so far from a typical Republican though. His own party didn’t want him, he forced their hand, because he just kept winning. I dig you don’t like Trump, I’m just hoping his election shakes up the 2 party system, and maybe we’ll have better choices come the next election

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

technically they didn’t call Michigan yet last I looked but he is leading

Thanks for the “bell weather” info Mike. You learnt me something.

  59. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I agree with what you said Herd

but the thing is – there was so much mudslinging in the campaign
we are left with representations of who these candidates are – rather than their ideals

its Hillary’s own fault – she was eager to call the guy a misogynist/racist or focus on what he said and didn’t take advantage of the opportunities to sell her vision of America

I’m not even sure if she had a plan to address some concerns Americans have or of she even understood what those concerns were

and in the end she just wasn’t speaking to many Americans

but – This idea of Trump being antiestablishment is not plausible to me
The job is the establishment not the person
    and he wanted that job

If he wants to remedy the frustration everyone has with gov’t he has to tear down the checks and balances we have that are the foundation of our democracy

without checks and balances we have tyranny

I don’t think that is what he will do (I’ve heard some that believe he will be like that)

instead – I think he will find himself, another bureucrat who becomes what he alleges to set out fix
and if I’m right about that – what’s the difference

except that we are stuck with a clod with no experience, who offends everyone like the wind blows, has no diplomatic skills, doesn’t pay his taxes and will use the office for his own profit (albeit Hillary would do that last part too)

I just don’t get turning to Donald Trump out of frustration with the gov’t
To me that is analogous to being so tired of broccoli that you rub poop in your face

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Real transparency will go a long way. He has the house and senate to get his first 100 days plan in place which should stimulate the economy. We’ll see.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It’s true
I don’t think there are any obstructions right now to getting things through

So there should be a consistent philosophy which of course has its pros and cons

But at least things get done that way

But I think it’s a matter of time before we want our broccoli back…lol

Time will tell like you said

I can go on and on about why I hate his economic plans but I won’t oink the blog down

He’s not one of those nasty wild hogs that are ferocious he’s more like one of Vietnamese pot belly pigs that you would like to have as a pet.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

it should not come across that way
I didn’t call anyone “dumb” for their point of view

I’m really careful to avoid that sort of thing

the statement refers to turning to Trump out of frustration with the gov’t
it doesn’t belittle anyone for having a different point of view

If I say “I don’t get” to start a statement
      I’m virtually admitting I don’t know everything
not that my opinion is better than anyone – its practically the opposite of what you read it to be

A person can have a differing opinion and be respectful of the other people

The only one I am calling poop is Trump – not anyone who voted for him
and yeah, I think he poop
but I make an effort not to make the same kinda statement about people who support him or voted for him

I don’t get it doesn’t mean some one who feels differently is better or worse

If you held my statement to the standard you just did – it means no one can have an opinion without insulting the other opinion

  66. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

“I would not let trump pick my socks much less vote for him”

and yes you can have a difference of opinion without offending some one. just say you disagree with them. but you said you disagree with them and then went and basically called them dumb for having their opinion
