Ask Mike – 2016 Season Week 10

Q – So do you think that the “NEW” offense that the Fins have been running is Portable?

Can The Fins Storm through the Chargers the way Trump torpedoed the Democratic Party?

Absolutely portable! I think this type of offense can play anywhere, especially colder weather. This offense is built for the playoffs, although I take pause to say that we’re going to be in the playoffs, there’s a long haul to get there. Still, any team that run the ball like we have is ready for anything. What we need to see, as painful as it may be, is what happens if the run game is completely shut down. Can Ryan TannEhill, the O-line, Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Devante Parker and whoever we have at TE make the opposing defense pay for selling out on the run. That remains to be seen. Tannehill and the offense has done enough with continued success running the ball, but we haven’t seen the passing elevated to lofty heights yet. In the last 3 wins, Tannehill has 2 TD’s and no INT’s, a good sign that with no turnovers, yet we’re basically following the KC mantra, don’t turn the ball over, and do enough to win.

I have to admit, I’m not especially confident that Tannehill can win a game by lighting up the scoreboard, but SD is a team that has been relatively stingy against the run, but a sieve in the pass game. Now, stats are always skewed that way, because when a weakness is exploited, such as the Chargers don’t defend the pass well, teams will forego the run, and just throw on them, so the run defense will appear statistically better than it might be. We’ll see what the real deal is Sunday. I think we both know that we will be determined to run the ball, and will try to do so as much as we can, unless SD jumps way ahead, and forces our hand. That will be up to not turning the ball over, and the defense keeping us in, as they have the last 3 wins. Melvin Gordon will test our run defense, he’s been tearing it up. Gordon is 3rd in the league in rushing yards (768), and leads the league in rushing attempts (193), which shows you their commitment to the run. To give you perspective on how hard they lean on Gordon, the closest RB in attempts on the Chargers is Danny Woodhead, who is injured, with 19 rushes, and then Kenneth Farrow with 15. Gordon is their rushing offense, in addition to catching 28 passes for 284 yards. He’s a HUGE part of their offense, as Ajayi has been for us.

Q – Just wondering if you could help me with this. With the elation of knowing that “crooked cankles” will NOT be the president of this fine nation, and the joy of witnessing coach GASE turn this franchise around, to the point of the Dolphins WINNING again……how does one remove this smile from one’s face?

You don’t really want the answer, do you?

This road trip is critical for our team, we need to keep the (J) train rolling, and need to keep winning to stay relevant and alive in a run to the playoffs. I suppose we’re going to lose eventually, but a loss in SD would really hurt our team, especially if other teams like the Ravens, Colts, Chiefs and Broncos win. That would put us behind the 8-ball, and at 4-4, we need to keep winning. O-line and defense need to continue playing at a very high level, and if they do, that smile is gonna be there for a long time brother!

We can all see Gase gets it, his players now get HIM, and he KNOWS our strengths and weaknesses to the point he can game plan accordingly. It worked at home, and I truly believe it can work on the road too, as I explained to Wyo above. This is not the same ol’ Dolphins, we’re a different animal (mammal?) right now.

Congratulations to President elect Donald Trump, it’s his time to bring the country together, to bring us to better times, strengthen our military, our trade, and therefore our economy. America has spoken, now it’s time for Trump to come through. This country needs to stay united, not divided. I hope he can achieve that as well as all the other goals he has set forth.

Q – Hey Mikey

Trump, in the UK, is a synonym for fart (though mainly used in very polite circles or to the very young). I noticed that when Omar tweets about the unicorns, he has an image of one galloping into the distance with a gas burner coming from the tail area. I took this to be an omen that Jay will take off and plough through the SD D with another monster game. Is this how you would read these tea leaves?

PS If you need any help with unicorn physiology, Herd may be able to shed some light from her experience with Bridget.

Thanks as always

UK

UK, I wonder what what the perception is across the puddle is about our newly elected President. Are you all nervous? Terrified? Looking forward to dealing with a non-politician?

Anyway . . . That was a pretty cool photo that Herd put up there. I saw it earlier on the day on FB, and was wondering if maybe there were a red and blue deer to follow shortly, in honor of President elect Trump. Or, maybe not.

I think as long as O-line remains healthy, and Ajayi as well, he will find and exploit whatever holes the O-line gives him, against just about any defense. That’s the beauty of it, if you run block well enough, and you stay committed to running, the holes will come, and honestly, Ajayi makes teams pay every time he finds one, because unlike the formerly beloved Lamar Miller, who went down as soon as contact was made, Ajayi is a brawler, who who’s physicality and awesome stiff arm makes him difficult to bring down. Yes, MillerTime had more speed, but I’ll take the way Ajayi runs over Miller every and any day of the week, especially Sunday!

UK, I figure just about every time #23 gets 20 + carries, he’s going to crack the century mark, or close to it, and that’s a formula for success. As we football fans instinctively know, it gives you a time of possession advantage, it keeps the defense rested, and therefore, the defense plays better. It’s a win-win every time.

Please feel free to let me know what the Queen and her loyal subjects think of the Donald, and what you guys think our country (and the rest of world) are in for. I’m extremely curious, and I know I can look it up on the interwebs, but I want to hear it from you personally. Mike Asks . . .

Q – Mike,
The AFC West has some strong contenders for the WC spots. IMO, we need to beat SD this week in case it comes down to a tiebreaker. Trump had a near impossible road to the presidency, yet won. Can you map out a Dolphins playoff berth, so we can Make the NFL Great Again?

Brian in NY

.
I completely agree that we have to beat SD, but really, even if it was CLE again, we’d have to win that game too. At 4-4, we have very little room for error. Things can change, but at this moment, it looks pretty clear that at a minimum of 10 wins will be required to make the playoffs. The Raiders currently lead the AFC West with with 7 wins (7-2), and they are followed closely by the Chiefs (6-2) and the Broncos (6-3). The Ravens and the Colts are right now our closest contenders, so we have to keep pace, and continue to win.Winning 10 games, for those mathematically challenged (I am!) means we can only lose 2 games the rest of the way.

So let’s look at who we have left on the schedule.

2 games in Cali, this Sunday at SD, and then we go to LA to face the former St. Louis Rams, now the LA Rams. Both winnable games, but only if we continue to stay healthy, and keep up the balanced/run heavy attack. Both teams run very well in their own right, SD with Melvin Gordon, and LA with Todd Gurley (Your former man crush). SD also has the explosive Philip Rivers, who sometimes implodes too. LA may be starting Jared Goff if they lose again this week (they face the Jets in NJ). I’m predicting us to beat SD, and if LA loses this week, and we face Goff in his first start, I figure we give Goff a rude introduction to the NFL, which would put us at 6-4.

We come home after the extended Cali stay to face another Cali team, the 49ers, but we face them in our house. Unbelievable, we win our 6th straight and we sit at 7-4. We then travel to Baltimore, and face a team who in recent years has spoiled our chance at a playoff berth, but with our new rushing attack, the Ravens tough defense is physically beaten, and we return the favor by ruining their playoff chances, and vault to 8-4. OK, here comes the letdown. We come home again, but this time it’s the Arizona Cardinals visiting. We play them tough, but David Johnson the and the Cardinals defense edge us out, which leaves us at 8-5. We then travel to NJ to face the reeling Jets, who just don’t care anymore. Bryce Petty is the QB, and the young QB has been getting his lumps for a few weeks now, and they keep on coming as we have a game reminiscent of the Met Life takeover, and we win 27-3, and now go to 9-5.

At 9-5, we face the 7-7 Bills, eager for revenge, but in the end, the playoff hungry Dolphins who are now an any weather team run all over them, Ajayi nearly eclipses 200 again, and the Dolphins have 10 wins going into the final week of the season.

It comes down to a showdown with the Patriots in week 17, and luckily for us, the Patriots have already clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but like Belichick always does, he starts his best, but in the 2nd half, Beli pulls Brady, Gronk and some others, and we roll to our 11th win of the season, and get the top WC spot, followed by the Chiefs, who get the 2nd WC. So there you have it. There’s your road to the playoffs brother, all paved and nicely laid out for you.

Your thoughts?

Coincidentally or not, I’ve been having a lot of discussions about tolerance with my clients. Everyone believes their opinion is “right”. Why would it be our opinion if we didn’t? The hope is that we can all be tolerant of the opinions of others and allow for our differences while working together towards a common goal. Politicians talk about reaching across the aisle all the time while rarely ever doing it because they really aren’t willing to compromise….they try to push for what they want instead of working together to find the best option for the Country. The system is not working as intended. It’s broken. At this point, I’m just hoping Trump can be that wild catalyst that can cause change. My fear is that he’s still a “rich, white guy” who really only wants to benefit those like him.

  23. olddolphan says:

Mike E and the rest of you; Yesterday afternoon a customer of the company I work for called me at work and invited me to lunch today at his expense. He is a very successful coin dealer/bullion dealer and is well known throughout Tampa Bay as “a damn good guy” according to one of his competitors.

I asked him “Why on earth are you doing this?” He replied “I make it a point to take a group of local veterans out to lunch on Veterans Day. And since I just found out you are a veteran, I wanted to personally invite you out tomorrow and on Dec. 7, as well (“Pearl Harbor Day”)!!!”–Needless to say, I was blown away by his offer.

When I returned to south Florida in late 1972 I made it a point NOT to discuss my tour of duty in the Army. Through the mid-70’s and well into the ’80’s, only a very small number of my friends and associates even knew I served. During this time I served as President of the West Palm Coin Club (which had over 200 members). Only two of the members, one of which was my wife, even knew I was a veteran. You see, being a veteran was not well received by many in this country, especially in the ’70’s when I was pursuing my career as an X-Ray tech and, later, a chief CT Scan tech. So I decided not to rock the boat. I simply went about my business and did my job.

Sometime during the ’80’s a friend said to me “being a veteran is something you should be proud of.” I knew he was right. And the climate definitely had changed. My new wife, my step daughters, and, as the years went by, my grandkids, all thought it was “neat” that pop-pop was a veteran. I finally came out of my self-imposed shell and began talking about small segments of my military experience.

My how things, and times, have changed. I’ve gone from being afraid to “rock the boat” to being proud of what I did to help my adopted country. And little things like being invited out to lunch now mean everything to me. The dark cloud of frustration and horror has, slowly, been lifted. My sincerest thanks to all who, through their generosity and kindness, have made Veterans Day a day us veterans can be proud of.

That meal is going to taste extra good today.

  24. Mike E. says:

    Herd

Thanks for embedding the video. I was too tired to keep playing with it.

    bookman,

got a question for you or anyone for that matter that knows the answer. in your survivor league i have never played in one but i thought you have to take each team one time to win. what happens if the browns go 0-16 does that mean no one wins

  30. Mike E. says:

    Rob

Since you’re an accountant, you probably now realize, you just have to pick 17 different teams to win, which means you never have to choose the Browns, unless of course you think they will win.

  31. finfanrob says:

    mike,

being an accountant has nothing to do with knowing how a survivor league works. i dont know how many games they have to pick.

so you are saying all you have to do in a survivor league is pick one team a week to win?

  32. Mike E. says:

    Rob

Yes. I meant after Son’s explanation, but then again, it was still vague as to how it works. I thought accountants know everything, my uncle does.

Have you seen the petition for the electoral college to vote Hillary Clinton into the Presidency?

Can you imagine what would happen if that actually happened?

    • The Flying Pig says:

the electoral college is arguably (emphasis on the word arguably) in the constitution
So you probably need a constitutional amendment to change the electoral vote process
That kind of thing can’t be retroactive

      I hate the electoral vote
      always have
but you can’t change the rules after you get the results

its a bullshit petition bc its hindsight
but I do hope it leads to proposed bills to go to a popular vote in the future

a popular vote would be good for 3rd partys IMO
and would be more reflective of the will of the people

if nothing more I think maybe the electoral vote is due for some serious reassigning
so that a vote in a state like CA is not a third of a vote in another state

Its interesting that this is only the 4th time in history that the popular vote was inconsistent with the electoral vote and its in relatively close proximity to 2000

the other 2 times were also in relatively close proximity to one another: 1876 & 1888

      I don’t think that is a coincidence

the Civil War ended in 1865
its probably the best example of times when the country was divided

but of course, the country is divided now

so is the difference between the popular vote and the electoral vote a product of a divided country?

Or did something change after 1888 (maybe re-shifting of the electoral votes) to affect such a long period without a problem 1888-2000

      (Piggy shrugs)

it should not happen a lot
the 2 things need to be on the same page

I thought 2000 was an anomaly
but it may be a reflection of where our country is

  50. wyoming85 says:

  51. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

I think the electoral college system is fine the way it is. It’s set up just like the rest of the system, it’s a checks and balances system. It gives states without heavy population a say too, which is important. I think when 30 states vote one way, but the more heavily populated states vote another way, it logically seems unfair to award the winner of less states the office of President. I can’t say for sure that’s how they imagined it, but I’d say that’s pretty close.

Right now, as it stands, the heavily populated states on the eastern seaboard are all liberal, and the west coast too. It seems the rest of the country is a little more diverse, but just because more people live in those liberal states, it just doesn’t seem right to give them more say than the rest of the country. That’s where the electoral process comes in.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Generally its not a problem
but when the popular vote and electoral vote don’t line up it can be a problem
and my point is 2x in 5 elections seems like a problem

      it doesn’t usually happen
but IMO you want the electoral vote do match the popular vote

you may not have to get rid of it
just tweek it so that votes from more densely populated areas don’t count less

why should some one’s vote count more bc they live In a less populated area?
      that seems wrong to me

I hear arguments about the framework of the constitution
and its hard really to know what they were thinking
      I certainly do not know

but I like to think to think that there were a lot of differing opinions about everything when the constitution was written
you can see little inconsistencies in the design of the constitution
that open the door to debate (the free exercise clause and the establishment clause are a good example of that)

I don’t know who was against it at that time
but I’m sure there was a debate on the subject

it seems to be some of the reasoning for it is a bit outdated

      • Mike E. says:

The popular vote was less than a 400,000 difference, so it it’s pretty damn close, and considering how much of an advantage in population some states have, it does seem fair. Giving some states with lower populations more electoral votes would essentially do the same thing as what happened here already.

  52. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

Think of it this way. You have a republic with 50 states, and 30 of them voted for one person, and 20 voted for the other. Why should the one who only got 20 states win?

One of them is under consideration for a support position in the Defense Department. He’ll know in just a few days if he’s going to get the appointment. VERY brainy guy whose especially knowledgeable in drone warfare techniques. Would make a great addition to ANY administration.

On the way home I decided to do some serious grocery shopping at a local Publix. When the cashier noticed my hearing aids he asked “Are you a veteran?” I answered “Yes.” He said “We’re giving 10 per cent off your bill today if you are a veteran!” Saved me over $10!! Best of all, I’ve got an entire weekend OFF–a rare occurrence for your’s truly.

Talk to you fine Dolfans tomorrow. The Old Dolfan is out!

Each state has a number of electors equal to the number of Senators and Representatives to which the state is entitled.[5] The District of Columbia has the lesser of the number of electors it would have if it were a state, and the number of electors of the least-populous state (currently three).[6] Therefore, there are 538 electors, corresponding to the 435 Representatives and 100 Senators, plus the three electors for the District of Columbia. The Constitution bars any federal official, elected or appointed, from being an elector.

    See everyone is represented equally.

    • The Flying Pig says:

House of Representatives are based on population as best as we can evaluate it by the census

But every state has 2 senators
And that shifts power to less popular states

That said I can’t imagine a better way to calculate electoral

But popular rather than electoral would just be a lot more direct and smoother to me
It it were really in the table I would be full force for it
But it’s not and it’s a huge challenge to change it when we have been doing it for so long

    RIP Bill Stanfill
    A Dolphin great

  63. 81Howie says:

There is no update this morning
    It hasn’t changed

  64. So it looks like the Chargers leading tackler, Jatavius Brown, and Perryman are both out for this game. Could Ajayi be looking at another 200 yd rushing performance? This should be interesting.

  65. Mike E. says:

WR Travis Benjamin is doubtful, so that’s another guy SD will miss

  66. Mike E. says:

Keep in mind, Earl Mitchell will be back for the Dolphins, which is great, considering we face Melvin Gordon and Todd Gurley back to back

Former Rams and Dolphins RB Isaiah Pead remains in critical condition after undergoing surgery this morning following a car accident.

  70. BoulderPhinfan says:

Stopping Gordon should be priority one this game for the defense. Let rivers beat us.

  71. The Flying Pig says:

I just realized tomorrow is a 4pm game

    • herdfan says:

Yep, Rams game as well…left coast.

    • bookman11 says:

Yeah, and thanks to the fact the Packers are on early, and the local stations try not to show another game in the same time slot, we get two late games and one early game.(Packers) one of the late games is the Dolphins!!

  72. Mike E. says:

    Bookman

I meant to ask, do you have a really big mug you drink from in your house, bigger than your travel mug?

    • bookman11 says:

I have some other mugs that are about the same size maybe a little smaller.. I only bring out the other mug for really big occasions.

  73. Tim Knight says:

LOL @ Mike in the video. I’m very similar to you when watching the game. I also say and do goofy things like that. 🙂

    • herdfan says:

Funniest thing for me was when he first posted it was really blurry and I couldn’t tell it was him, partly because it was blurry, partly because I’ve never met him. I thought it was just some random crazy ass fan video he had found on the web.

  74. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, without the electoral college an election could be decided by less than 1/3 of the states and many Americans would have no voice. It’s in place to give all states a voice. There’s more to America than just heavily populated areas that lean one way or the other.

I’m a homer, but there are several defensive players for Iowa that I’d consider in the draft in the next couple years.
