Ask Mike – 2016 Season Week 13

ASKMIKELogo

from Stanger

Q – If you were the offensive coordinator for another team — how would you be thinking about attacking our defense?

Anything change if you are Raven’s OC Marty Mornhinweg?

stanger

I like this question. When I look at the Dolphins defense, I see weaknesses in the LB’s and also in the secondary. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking our boys (Maxwell, Lippett, McCain, Abdul-Quddus, Thomas and Rambo, and Alonso at LB), but I think if I’m going to look for weak spots, that’s it. Our defensive line has been solid, especially Suh, who has played great this season. I thought Mitchell was going to bring a spark, but he may be rusty, and Jordan Phillips has been awful quiet lately.

I would run Terrance West a lot, make Wake play the run, and try and tire him out, since he’s become an every down DE. I’d also try to exploit Lippett, and although Mike Wallace is a bit older, I always respected his abilities, and yes, even defended him while he was here. Mike Wallace is the type of receiver that could give Lippett trouble, because he can go right by him. Flacco can throw the deep ball, so I would take a few shots after running Terrance West, maybe a play action, or just take a shot deep.

I would also look to get Pitta involved in the passing game. Besides Alonso, I don’t trust any of our LB’s to cover Dennis Pitta, including Neville Hewitt or Jelani Jenkins. Those are the guys I would try to isolate. I would not be surprised to see Pitta have a lot of opportunities and touches against us Sunday. I hope our guys are up to the task! Besides Pitta and Wallace, we better watch out for RB Kenneth Dixon out of the backfield as a receiver. Again, our LB’s (except Alonso) really struggle there, so I would also prey on the LB’s trying to cover Dixon.

Q – Oinks to you Mike and my compliments on consistently offering us a weekly Ask Mike.

What a great win streak.  Lot of clutch plays.  Kiko Alonso returns an INT for a TD, Parker scores a 4th qtr TD, Drake returns a kickoff for a TD, Kaepernick is tackled to save a necessary winning TD.

Hey what’s with the absence of a game winning FG? Isn’t it odd to you that we have all these close wins fueled by clutch plays and no last second FG?

Do you think that is a reflection of this team?  Does this team have a killer instinct that teams under coaches like Sparano did not have? And what am I supposed to do with all the pictures of hot dogs I have?

Trotters Forever

Sir Pigsgerald Oinkustus Bacon De La Chuleta

Thanks Piggy, it’s truly my pleasure to write for all of you here, you people are what make this blog happen, it’s just my little contribution to it.

It is odd Piggy, but I think you nailed it at the end. Do you really want to put the game on the hot dog man? Actually, it’s not just that, but I do think that’s part of it. I do think Gase is much more aggressive, and more sure of himself than either Sparano or Philbin. Gase really does impress me with his resolve. I think like the best coaches, once he got comfortable, learned the personnel here, found their strengths and weaknesses, he devised a gameplan, and is confident in implementing it with the guys he employs to implement them.

I think John Harbaugh is an excellent coach, but I feel extremely confident having Gase go up against him. I never felt like that with a Sparano or Philbin led team. I think Sparano had the team play for him, but he was never a great strategist, and although Philbin may have been an intellectual coach, I don’t think he ever had his players behind him, nor do I think he ever outcoached the opposition. I think the players believe in Gase, and I think they feed off his confidence and energy. I LOVE THAT!

So to specifically answer, I do believe that Gase doesn’t feel like he wants to put the game in the hands of an unproven PK like Franks, so he finds other options to get the score. Know your strengths!

from Tim

Q – So which player do you feel needs to step up down the stretch that can give us a jolt we haven’t really had yet? Thank you!

There are so many Tim, there really are. I think if Mario Williams gave us a taste of what he used to be back in 2014, just a hot stretch where he can consistently get pressure and get to the QB, that would be huge. Right now Andre Branch is getting the job done, but if Williams rotates in, he’s a bystander almost all the time. 9 tackles and 4 assists, and 1.5 sacks is what we got. Seems like all the bullshit about not being used properly in BUF was just that, bullshit.

If Jelani Jenkins could ever get really healthy, and give us the play he gave us his 2nd year. He was all over the place, making tackles, getting a few sacks, he made an impact! That would be HUGE, but I’m not counting on him or Mario to give us that.

More obvious ones though would be to get Branden Albert and Mike Pouncey fully healthy for the rest of the season. I think Tunsil will be OK, but those 2 guys worry me more. Out of all the things I would wish for, I would take those 2 guys playing out the season healthy (as possible), and being as effective as they were in the first 2 games we had them all assembled. We do that, we’re playoff ready, and can beat most teams out there.

If I can stretch your 1 player to 2, maybe 3, (3 if Tunsil really is more hurt than I think he is), then those guys getting healthy and playing well would be my choice. If it’s just 1, give me Branden Albert healthy. I think we can make do.

If you want more of an unsung player, one hasn’t really done much to this point in MIA, I would say Kenyan Drake. We’ve seen what he can do as a returner, but I’d love to see him used more as a receiver out of the backfield, and even getting more carries. Nothing like a home run threat getting touches, and he is a home run threat. I know some would like Grant, but I think Drake is more ready to handle it now, but I do think Grant also has a chance to grow here next year, not in height (LOL), but in preparedness and being ready to handle more opportunities.

from Prof Lou

Q – are we 7-5 and tied w/BUF after this game; do they find a way to upset OAK? Do we stay ahead of BUF in the East or do they catch us and finish 2nd?

No way, we are 8-4, because we’re going to beat those birds! I respect the hell out of Harbaugh, but Gase and the Dolphins are up to the task, and the steamroller keeps rolling! Payback is a bitch, and it’s our turn to knock the ravens out of playoff contention. In 2014, we were in a very similar situation record wise, we were 7-5, and playing the Ravens to stay alive for playoff contention. That game was awful, and in typical Philbin led Dolphins teams, we froze in December, despite hosting the Ravens in MIA. We actually started that game OK, Piggy, Brian and Ken and I all went to Slatterys to watch this one. We were up 10-0 after the 1st QTR. Then the Ravens woke up and realized they were playing the December Dolphins, and they went on to outscore us 28-3 the rest of the way.

This time it’s going to be different. A good game, relatively close, although we cover the spread, which is about 3 points at last look. I have us winning 23-17, and since every prediction I’ve made has been money (NOT!!!), I figure it to be something like that. It’s going to be up for grabs in the 4th, as just about every game we’ve won during this streak has, save for the Pittsburgh game.

Oakland may very will win out. They are getting excellent play from so many players, especially Derek Carr on offense, and that defense is filled with playmakers. They are allowing a lot of points, but I think they are going to be a great defense at some point. That O-line is excellent, and not one 1st RD pick to be found. LT Donald Penn, cast off from the Bucs, LG Kelechi Osemele (Ancient Warrior), C Rodney Hudson, RG Gabe Jackson (yeah D!), and RT Austin Howard.

Donald Penn (UNDRAFTED), Kelechi Osemele (2nd RD), Rodney Hudson (2nd RD), Gabe Jackson (3rd RD), and Austin Howard (UNDRAFTED). Pretty impressive, and unbelievable that Howard, an undrafted free agent is the only NFL tackle NOT to allow a sack this season. Oakland is going to troll over the Bills, they’re the better team. You have to want the Raiders to win anyway, that will essentially knock the Bills out.

Q – Hey Axe Mike E,

In regards to my boy Ryan Tannehill & a certain President elect of the good ol USA, namely one Donald J. Trump, trump, trump….
Do ya’s think many FU’ers will be offended or mad when I burst back onto our blog with a Big Fat, I TOLD YOU SO?!?!?!

Go Tanny & Go Trump
signed, Gloating Getterdone
Go Phins!

GDP!! Great to hear from you man! We all miss ya man, that’s the truth.

To answer, I think everyone will be really happy to see, whether you’re gloating, floating, or boating. Just get yer ass back on the blog, and you’ll see for yerself! Hope all is well with your home and family after the storm.

You know that about half the people are happy Trump won, and you know just about everyone is happy Tannehill is playing well. 🙂

I’m finding it somewhat funny how Trump is all of a sudden getting soft an many of the hard stances he took. He’s becoming a Democrat right before our very eyes. lol

Anyways, I hope to see you on the blog in short order, your friends will be pleased to see you back on!

Best wishes brother! Sorry I didn’t get to meet you at the Fest.
Next year man, I’m gonna hold you to that!

  12. You guys are right. The headsets cut out after so long. But, in the case of the td to Williams Gase said they were waiting for that matchup to happen and when it did they took the shot. Had Gase not said anything to Tannehill about the matchup, chances are Tannehill never takes the shot because he doesn’t see it.
In addition, to respond to one of Piggy’s comments above about the HC not being able to communicate to the QB about a wide open wr what Gase is doing is telling Tannehill “this is the matchup we’re looking for on this play. if we get it, that’s your first read. you take that shot if you’ve got it.” That’s what he’s doing. Tannehill is going off what Gase is telling him in his headset. He’s not making those reads of the D on his own. Gase is giving him a ton of stuff in his helmet before the snap.

  13. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    Thx Bookman, Herd & Son.

    ———————————–
Reading between the lines of Armando’s last column, it seems likely that ALBERT, JENKINS, HOWARD and PARKER will be on the sidelines for the Ravens’ game. Wouldn’t be surprised if the 3 point spread goes up to 4 points in Baltimore’s favor. BUT I’M NOT BUYING IT!!!!!!!!! I think this will only increase Gase’s use of the passing game, which happens to be the Ravens’ biggest defensive shortcoming. Landry, Stills, Carroo and Sims could all see lots of action. I also expect to see a bit more of Damien Williams’ pass-catching skills on display at key moments of this contest. A combination of quick passes and roll-out passes will give Tannehill several opportunities to light-up the Baltimore secondary. NO DROPS by Stills and a decrease in penalties against the Fins equals a victory on the road for our favorite team!

Why did M13 think his welcome has worn out?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was confused by that. My guess was he took Herd’s joke when she asked Son and M13 if they wanted to be alone as a slight, but it was pretty much on par with all the chiffon robe and hot tub jokes we always said to each other. If that’s not it, then I really have no idea what it might have been. I thought Herd’s joke was funny, and I don’t think she meant anything at all but humor.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I see articles asking what Xavien Howard’s role will be when he comes back. I don’t understand what the question is. If he’s healthy, he’s starting opposite Maxwell. As long as Maxwell is playing well, he’s in. If they really don’t Maxwell has value though going forward for next year, and they really like Lippett, they’ll cut Maxwell, and go with Howard and Lippett

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You can never have enough corners as well.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Absolutely, but Maxwell is making big bucks, the other 2 guys are not. We might draft another CB for depth. Have to have at least 4-5 CB’s that belong on the field.

Its not like we are overstocked with probowlers at CB

Sheesh….what do people think Howard will be doing
If he doesn’t start like he did before the injury – then he is a CB further down the depth chart

YES!!!! I enjoyed it so much, I should have recorded it. GO DOLPHINS!!!

YES, SON, there all sorts of bad jokes referring to “laying down the law” and such but I believe letting nature (and inquisitive smiles) take their natural course is the best way to obtain the desired results. As for HERD being glad that “at her age” she still draws attentive looks, both my 51 year old daughter and her MOM (otherwise known as Mrs. OD) still draw attentive looks in volume. –IF you’ve got the proper attitude, the rest will take care of itself, RIGHT SON???

Should be a good game tonight. Could be playing for the Rose Bowl. (Doubt either team makes it into the final 4)

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Piggy, without getting into specific prospects I’d like to see us go DE and LB the first two rounds if they qualify for BPA and then add a TE who can get down the field.

aaahhhhh so cute. you silly silly man. both teams are a long long way from having top 4 tv ratings…….wait..you did mean top 4 tv ratings right, that is all the final 4 are based on.

(can you imagine if the nfl was like the ncaa. yeah yeah we know the cheats are 0-16 but they get great ratings so the 15-1 team doesnt get to be in the playoffs)

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You early bird draftniks, which LBs do you see as a good fit for our 4-3 defense, and what round?

I’m thinking we re-sign Alonso but we need another impact LB to add to him. Guys like Hewitt and Butler provide good game day depth and Vigil and Hull provide STs and more back end depth, but we need to add another starting LB. I think we’ll let Jenkins and Paysinger walk as we try to upgrade the unit.

  87. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Long as we are looking forward to the draft, seems first comes free agency. We are in good shape to be players in that.

We are $29 mil under projected cap next year and not a lot of big in-house FAs to re-sign other than Alonso — Jenkins, Stills, Branch, Steen and Bushrod are up too, but none of those should go for big money. And that is before cap cuts. Mario Williams is gone or will re-do and that will save us $8 mil right there. Others are possible too like Albert, Misi and Maxwell.

What is awesome is that of right now the only person not be on the roster now who will be costing us is Jamil Douglas, but only for a few hundred grand. Very different from past years.

So bottom line is that the financial house is in great order.

Draft talk doesn’t mean you’ve given up on the Fins!

It means the NCAA Football season is about over and we have seen all the Sample size of the Draft-able players!

I’ve almost stopped watching the NFL other than the Fin games!

  92. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Totally agree with Herd. No draft talk yet. We are relevant

  93. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So at this point we are drafting 19th or 20th?

  94. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I’d say the way Branch is playing he could get a nice raise in FA either with us or elsewhere. The other guys will be gone or signed at reasonable deals. I think we move on from Misi, and R. Jones could be a conundrum. We either pay him or trade him. He called off his holdout this year, will he do that again?

Jordan is another cap break as a former 1st rd pick though he barely collected his bonus money due to suspensions.

Cameron opens up a nice savings at $8M. We’re not keeping Mario at $10.5M with only a $2M cap hit if we release him. Not productive enough.

We’re currently just over $14M in cap space so add these savings to the cap increasing and we’ll be able to add some players. Then we draft.

I don’t mind talking about the draft now just not specific prospects. It’s way too early for that and we all know that. You can’t get specific until after the combine and some pro days.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Reshad is only a problem if his health becomes a problem. We saw how he plays and find it hard to think he’ll do the hold out thing coming off an injury.

Jordan is up to get like $3 mil…..we’ll see if they think he is worth it. Thought Cameron’s contract is up end of season. Mario’s back-end will sure hit our cap space though.

And you are right on current cap space carrying over into next year. Not like Ross has been shy about that before. We should be well set up for FA.

  95. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Concerning draft spot:
If we are currently 6th seed in the AFC and there are 6 in the NFC, then there are only 11-12 teams above us right? 32-12=20

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Once you make the playoffs they re-seed based on records. Ours is better than some div leaders right now, including the Ravens we play tmrw.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Only the SB teams get tagged at 32 and 31. All other teams even playoff teams get slotted based on difficulty of schedule with same records after the fact. Meaning if we finish 10-6 but lose a playoff scenario to another 10-6 team that made the playoffs, they could still pick ahead of us if they don’t make it to the SB. It’s weird I know, but I think that’s how it works. Correct me if I’m wrong. I thought I remember that happening in the past.

  96. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Herd that warning ticket story has a cute/naughty undertone to it you know. Did you have a mischievous grin when you told us that? And then the innocently phrased soccer mom moment when we all know that cop was diggin your program. Who else on here could report laundry duty so it sounds like like a HBO late night series episode?
