Ask Mike – 2016 Season Week 14

Q – Last week both of us explained how to “easily” game plan against our D!

Now for the hard part.
Is there anything Vance Joseph can do to prevent Palmer from hitting a thousand or so crossing, seam, check down routes at 8 to 12 yards?

I have an idea but I’d like to hear yours first

Thanks
Wyoming85

The first thing we can do is find 2 new LB’s! OK, that can’t happen, so realistically, our safeties are going to have to try and help the LB’s, but that puts more pressure on the CB’s, as they will likely be working one on one with some talented WR’s, namely Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown. I think in the nickel packages, we have to be more disciplined with our LB’s, meaning we can’t afford to have them blitz, and be picked up, I’d almost prefer to have them crowd the field and do their best in coverage. I’ve seen Alonso try and shoot a gap so many times this year, only to have a RB exploit a different lane, or just run a quick route in the flat where the LB should be. In other words, let’s let the front 4 do their best, and drop the LB’s back in coverage, with help from the safeties.

David Johnson is the most dangerous Cardinal on offense. Not only is he an effective runner, but he’s an excellent receiver, with size and speed that make him a difficult cover for anyone. If we can somehow limit him, I think we can stay in this game. If Alonso can’t go, or even if he can go and is playing impaired by the cast, the LB’s have their work cut out for them with Johnson.

Q – Oinks Mike

So are you with me?  Is the 2017 offseason about getting better up front defensively?

After watching Baltimore in the 1st qtr of the game do whatever they want on offense – do you think this is our Achilles heal.

No pass rush and easy easy completions in the middle of the field seem to be our downfall – and we’ve seen it a lot during the season.

Trotters Forever,

Sir Pigsgerald Oinkustus Bacon DeLa Chuleta, A/K/A The Sqiglilator

Defense will definitely be a priority, with the exception of OL and TE. Get one more competent O-lineman in the draft, and please, please, please a TE who is actually a threat to catch the ball downfield, and preferably, one with a little size, like 6’4” or taller. Alright, back to the defense. I think we have to aim for 2 starting LB’s, and they don’t both have to come from the draft. We can get 1 in the draft, and one in FA, but a lot will depend on whether we’re able to re-sign Alonso, and if we even want to. Like others have suggested, I’d like to see Alonso move to OLB, pick up a stud MLB who can solidify this unit, make tackles as well as cover (3 down LB). We can definitely use a young pass rushing DE, but at this point, it’s not a priority over LB.

I think at CB, we’re in good shape if Howard can show us he can play a couple of games and play well. Maxwell has changed my mind, and I think he’s back next year for sure. he can play, and is definitely good enough to start. Lippett will continue to develop, and McCain is OK as a the nickel or dime. I wouldn’t mind drafting another CB, but it’s not a priority. I wouldn’t be mad if we drafted another S either, Abdul-Quddus has played OK, but he’s not a difference maker. We need impact at LB, and besides Alonso, we don’t have it. Biggest need for sure is LB. Ideally, we got a top LB in this coming draft.

Q -Hey!

Which unit needs a high draft pick the most and who is your guy for that spot? Or, which unit is holding us down the most at this point in the season? Pick whichever one you want to use.

Thanks,
John

I think it’s clear that LB is our biggest need, and as I’ve previously mentioned, I think Alonso would be better at OLB, and we finally get a stud MLB. If we can get Vandy ILB Zach Cunningham, that would be great, but there are a couple of other guys that may fit as well. Alabama MLB Reuben Foster is a solid tackling machine and possibly, as good or better pro prospect than last year’s Bama ILB Reggie Ragland.

If we go OLB, I think Jabril Peppers is gone before we pick, so possibly Alabama’s Tim Williams, or UCLA’s Takkarist McKinley. In FA, I don’t really like the crop of ILB’s available, they’re either too old, not 4-3 fits, or not going to make an impact, but at OLB, SD Chargers OLB Melvin Ingram is a FA, ARZ Cardinals LB Chandler Jones, who was traded from NE, and another NE castoff Jamie Collins, who definitely seems to have attitude issues, and apparently, they have come up in Cleveland, where he’s been lackadaisical in pursuit at times, one glaring one was a TD that he just started jogging, and he had the angle to  make the play.  Maybe he just needs some motivation and possibly, he was taken aback by being traded from a SB contender to the worst NFL team. That’s 3 possibilities who would be a HUGE upgrade over what we currently have.

Draft a guy like Cunningham, Foster or Davis, get one of the above mentioned OLB’s in FA, move Alonso to the weak side, and all of a sudden we have a LB corps!

It’s also obvious we need a quality player for depth on the O-line, because we’ve seen how negatively that affects our performance, and denies  us the ability to carry on with our normal game plan, so another OG or C, may be in the cards, but probably not with our 1st or 2nd pick.

Q – I think this is my first ask Mike question. I see you guys always mentioning how in past years we always suck in December and I can’t disagree.  Different players, coaches, different uniforms, we’ve changed damn near everything. Is this the year we change that too?

Thanks for the question! You are now famous beyond your wildest dreams! You will be read worldwide!

Anyway, back to reality,  I think it’s possible that due to mitigating circumstances, we could possibly be in for a rough December. We already got shellacked by the Ravens to start December in the wrong direction, and the Arizona Cardinals are as good, or IMO, better than the Ravens. They have a much more balanced team. The Ravens feature a very good defense, but on offense, they only tore us apart, not the rest of the NFL. The Cardinals on the other had, have a very good dangerous offense, led by a veteran QB Carson Palmer, a top 3 RB in David Johnson. It doesn’t stop there, although a little older, WR Larry Fitzgerald is still a difficult cover and a star player, and Michael Floyd at 6’3” 220 is another tough cover. John Brown has the speed to go deep, so a tough trio of WR’s. Just to give you some perspective on how good David Johnson is, he has 1005 yards rushing, averaging 4.4 YPC, and also has 64 catches 704 yards. 1700 yards from scrimmage and we’re at game 13 this week. He also has 11 rushing TD’s, and 4 receiving TD’s, 15 TD’s in all. Crazy!

It’s not clear whether Jelani Jenkins will play Sunday, but as crazy as it sounds, I hope he’s healthy enough to play. He’s probably our best cover LB, which I realize isn’t saying much, but regardless, we could use him to help out. If Alonso and Jenkins are out, that leaves a combination of Mike Hull, Neville Hewitt, Spencer Paysinger and Zach Vigil. David Johnson will no doubt be drooling while savoring that matchup.

I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t think it would be fair to blame Gase if the team fails this December. I didn’t love his game plan last week, and it didn’t appear that he was able to adjust in the 2nd half either, but there are games like that for every team. I expect us to be much more competitive this week, and I think we can beat the Cards, but we have to execute a good game plan, and get a better start than we have in weeks. We can’t fall too far behind early on the Cards, because then they will bury us. If our O-line is healthy, and Alonso and Jenkins can be effective with their injuries, I think we have a fair shot.

What I don’t want to see is another game where it looks like we don’t belong on the field with our opponent. Baltimore undressed us, so I’m hoping Gase and Joseph come up with a solid plan of attack, no matter who plays Sunday. If we win this Sunday, IMO, we’ve already changed because a big bounce back win this Sunday would be big one for this team, and its young HC.

ANOTHER truly excellent column, Mike!! My take on Sunday’s game and the rest of the schedule is this: YES, Miami has personnel deficiencies. And injuries. But so does EVERY OTHER TEAM IN THE NFL when we get to December. The GREAT and SUCCESSFUL coaches make the necessary adjustments. Those that are not great just lose, sometimes by large margins. WE’RE going to find out how well GASE adjusts. I believe if our team is competitive, and wins 2-3 games on the remaining schedule, the fan base will be somewhat appeased. But if the team pulls “A PHILBIN,” and folds down the stretch like a piece of paper, there will be consequences, particularly at the box office.

I’m on record as saying GASE is a significant step up from the three prior head coaches. It’s up to GASE to prove me right.

  3. Mike,
Would you seriously consider taking a 6′ 205lb player for OLB?

Peppers? It doesn’t matter, he’s gone anyway, but he can stay in my house for a few weeks, I’ll have him up to 235 in no time!

    Mike E,

Nice write. It is shocking to me, and I am sure everyone else here on the blog that you are a proponent of drafting a pass catching TE. Where did THAT come from…..like right out of the blue?

I mean, after all, we did draft Arthur Lynch in 2014 in the 5th round….what more could you want?
    Isn’t that investment enough?

Do you still have his jersey?

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

One TE I am partial to, and biased to because he is from Wisconsin, is Troy Fumagalli. 6-6, 248. Not a blazer, but always seems to be open. The best part about him though, and the main reason I would love him on the Fins is his name….Too bad he is only Junior. Not sure if he will come out or not.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I never bought an Egnew jersey, but I did buy some bad ones, such as Chad Henne, Brandon Marshall, Karlos Dansby, and my most recent failure, Dion Jordan

  9. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Peppers is interesting bc at the start of the season he was being called a safety
And now he is an OLB

I guess he is that new hybrid type
Didn’t Son have a name for that safety/OLB hybrid

It’s interesting to see these guys so highly ranked

Myles Jack was highly ranked all year last year
    Even though he was injured
And then went in the 2nd round

    So….

  10. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

If you look at that prospect rankings Peppers is top 5 no later than top 10

But given the Myles Jack experience – maybe that is wrong
I know peppers is healthy but…

It is possible that peppers is available when we pick

    Lou,
I don’t knonof you call him a LB or a safety
But I would take peppers in the 1st
    You would too! Lol

I don’t know what is going well n with the NFL and LBs these days
But I’m pretty sure a Peppers in the Dolphins would help us cover TEs in the middle of the field

Just around 500 yards and 50 receptions. Not really a passing offense in Wisconsin though, but he is money when the ball is thrown his way.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Good job once again Mike.

After a bad loss fans tend to think the rest of the season will go that way but that’s usually not the case. A lot of teams have had bad games this season and rebounded. Let’s hope that’s the case for the Phins.

My concern in this matchup is that the Cards love to throw deep down the field so we need a game plan to make sure we keep that to a minimum. It starts like you said with stopping or slowing down DJ because they play-action off of him.

I disagree with not blaming Gase if we fail again in december this year. Who do you want to blame? the dog?

If you can’t get your team to play their best when stakes go up then you have no business coaching in the NFL. Coaches that lose in december, ala philbin and sparano, don’t stay HCs in the NFL for long.

What I view as a December collapse is playing poor, uninspired football, like we have in past years. If we lose a well played game 31-28 to Arizona, or even 17-13, to me we just got beat by a better team, which I think right now, the Cardinals are. If we get blown out, and then go 8-8, I will wonder myself. I guess we al have our own perceptions. I just want to see the team be competitive, and hopefully that’s enough to win

    Speaking of Play offs …

FinsMob FFB League Playoffs start this weekend.. i left the Playoffs as ALL qualify because only two people answered.. Congrats to Herd for winning Regular Season, Now lets see if she can repeat as Champion.. I am not going to point fingers or name names, but there is one person who has basically abandoned their team to this point.. In fairness to all, come Sunday Am if their starting roster still has IR, and IA players i will Commish Adjust the team with players currently on their roster.. If needed to field a complete team i will also add as needed at that point .. Good luck and thank you to all who chose to participate.. GO PHINS !!!!

I’m reposting this from the last blog since I only saw it by accident. Do what you think you should but I can’t see how you stepping in and helping a team out is fair to anyone. I agree it’s annoying when the team isn’t managed but it has been equal overall in that it was that way the whole season. It’s like a bye week. Who knows, the team that did nothing all year can win it all with a little help. That doesn’t seem right either. JMO

Generally i would be in pork heaven if we drafted Foster and move Kiko to the weak side

But IMO, I would like to see multiple draft picks on the defensive front in 2017

The 1st round and the 2nd round
I wouldnr mind seeing a DE and a LB with both those picks
    Or even 2 LBs

Rather than turning to FA to address the need – maybe it can be an area we address NOW through the draft and don’t have to worry about for some time

Think about how much we got out of those Initial jimmy Johnson drafts
Jason Taylor and Zack Thomas were staples for us for years

Use the draft to fix the defense
If anything turn to free agency for secondary or any offensive help

We can really improve our defense in 1 draft – I really beleove that

Mike Gesicki PSU. He’d be a great fit with Sims. Not sure he comes out this year though.

when you talk about PSU players coming out one never knows if for the draft or the closet

Jospeh should have made adjustments in the game. You cant go into the game thinking that one game plan will work, you hae to adjust the gameplan. I was most pissed about that aspect of our last game.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I agree. You have to think that he made adjustments as he had been doing in previous weeks, they just didn’t work. Mornhinwig knows our team fairly well, and probably knew how to best exploit it.

  50. D's avatar D says:

Id really like us to draft Jeremy Sprinkle. He is a good combination of receiving ability, run and pass blocking.

yeah but just think how excited tim is going to be by his touch down dance

  53. D's avatar D says:

I really would have liked to draft Hunter Henry last year. He is doing a fantastic job for SD in a reserve/rotational role. Almost 400 yards, on 27 receptions, 1 dropped pass in 39 targets. Pretty solid numbers there.

What do you think about Butt?
    ————————————————

  55. D's avatar D says:

LOL, seriously though…Jake Butt is going to be a solid TE, pretty rounded skill set, good redzone target, Going to be a 2nd rounder, but probably worth it. I also like the idea of drafting OJ Howard, i think those two are pretty comparable with Howard having some upside in the receiving department, and Butt probably a better footballer, ie football smarts, etc.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Howard should be there with our first pick in RD 1 , but I’d be shocked if we drafted a TE in the 1st Probably won’t be there with our 2nd pick

      • D's avatar D says:

He might be. I have a feeling he might be one of those guys who slides a little through the process, or maybe it will be more like some of these other guys who arent being considered right now will rise up a little, maybe brong him down some. Earliest i think he will be drafted is early second, but i think more likely mid to late second. He might be one of those guys its lie, yes he is about to fall to us and then…..bam! assholes right before us draft him.

and this the reason i want to adopt a 21 year old coed

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m nowhere near picking exact prospects for the draft but based on pedigree and need I like Reuben Foster for us early on. I think he’s just a good all around LB who can play any of the 3 positions.

  61. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Seems like we’ll be picking late teens if not a playoff team. We just need to take the best player available if it’s Foster then good but there may be a DE there or a TE.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah man just mentioning a LB prospect I like at this time.

We will definitely be in BPA territory. Even if we lose out (not that I am hoping for that) you are still at best like 12. Don’t stop you from seieng what you need though.

    Yeah that’s me, excellent taste.

i know i just said that

  78. I would take Peppers as a safety but there’s no way I’d want a guy that size playing LB. With his size he’s more effective playing safety. If he’s got to try and play off blocks like a LB he’s dead in the water. But, yeah, put him back there with Jones and we’ve got probably the strongest safety tandem in the league.
My comment was more about taking him as a LB. I don’t think any NFL team is going to take a guy that size as an OLB. If they do, they suffer the consequences.

  79. Best TE we could land in the upcoming draft is Sprinkles. Forget the Howard and Butt love affair. If we want to run the ball with Ajayi and also have a TE who will be a seam threat and a redzone threat then Sprinkles is the guy. He’s like having another OT on the line in the run game.

  80. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

    lou,

i disagree with you there. the best TE the fins can pick can play LB or DE or DB
