Ask Mike – 2016 Season Week 14

Q – Last week both of us explained how to “easily” game plan against our D!

Now for the hard part.
Is there anything Vance Joseph can do to prevent Palmer from hitting a thousand or so crossing, seam, check down routes at 8 to 12 yards?

I have an idea but I’d like to hear yours first

Thanks

The first thing we can do is find 2 new LB’s! OK, that can’t happen, so realistically, our safeties are going to have to try and help the LB’s, but that puts more pressure on the CB’s, as they will likely be working one on one with some talented WR’s, namely Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown. I think in the nickel packages, we have to be more disciplined with our LB’s, meaning we can’t afford to have them blitz, and be picked up, I’d almost prefer to have them crowd the field and do their best in coverage. I’ve seen Alonso try and shoot a gap so many times this year, only to have a RB exploit a different lane, or just run a quick route in the flat where the LB should be. In other words, let’s let the front 4 do their best, and drop the LB’s back in coverage, with help from the safeties.

David Johnson is the most dangerous Cardinal on offense. Not only is he an effective runner, but he’s an excellent receiver, with size and speed that make him a difficult cover for anyone. If we can somehow limit him, I think we can stay in this game. If Alonso can’t go, or even if he can go and is playing impaired by the cast, the LB’s have their work cut out for them with Johnson.

Q – Oinks Mike

So are you with me?  Is the 2017 offseason about getting better up front defensively?

After watching Baltimore in the 1st qtr of the game do whatever they want on offense – do you think this is our Achilles heal.

No pass rush and easy easy completions in the middle of the field seem to be our downfall – and we’ve seen it a lot during the season.

Trotters Forever,

Sir Pigsgerald Oinkustus Bacon DeLa Chuleta, A/K/A The Sqiglilator

Defense will definitely be a priority, with the exception of OL and TE. Get one more competent O-lineman in the draft, and please, please, please a TE who is actually a threat to catch the ball downfield, and preferably, one with a little size, like 6’4” or taller. Alright, back to the defense. I think we have to aim for 2 starting LB’s, and they don’t both have to come from the draft. We can get 1 in the draft, and one in FA, but a lot will depend on whether we’re able to re-sign Alonso, and if we even want to. Like others have suggested, I’d like to see Alonso move to OLB, pick up a stud MLB who can solidify this unit, make tackles as well as cover (3 down LB). We can definitely use a young pass rushing DE, but at this point, it’s not a priority over LB.

I think at CB, we’re in good shape if Howard can show us he can play a couple of games and play well. Maxwell has changed my mind, and I think he’s back next year for sure. he can play, and is definitely good enough to start. Lippett will continue to develop, and McCain is OK as a the nickel or dime. I wouldn’t mind drafting another CB, but it’s not a priority. I wouldn’t be mad if we drafted another S either, Abdul-Quddus has played OK, but he’s not a difference maker. We need impact at LB, and besides Alonso, we don’t have it. Biggest need for sure is LB. Ideally, we got a top LB in this coming draft.

Q -Hey!

Which unit needs a high draft pick the most and who is your guy for that spot? Or, which unit is holding us down the most at this point in the season? Pick whichever one you want to use.

Thanks,
John

I think it’s clear that LB is our biggest need, and as I’ve previously mentioned, I think Alonso would be better at OLB, and we finally get a stud MLB. If we can get Vandy ILB Zach Cunningham, that would be great, but there are a couple of other guys that may fit as well. Alabama MLB Reuben Foster is a solid tackling machine and possibly, as good or better pro prospect than last year’s Bama ILB Reggie Ragland.

If we go OLB, I think Jabril Peppers is gone before we pick, so possibly Alabama’s Tim Williams, or UCLA’s Takkarist McKinley. In FA, I don’t really like the crop of ILB’s available, they’re either too old, not 4-3 fits, or not going to make an impact, but at OLB, SD Chargers OLB Melvin Ingram is a FA, ARZ Cardinals LB Chandler Jones, who was traded from NE, and another NE castoff Jamie Collins, who definitely seems to have attitude issues, and apparently, they have come up in Cleveland, where he’s been lackadaisical in pursuit at times, one glaring one was a TD that he just started jogging, and he had the angle to  make the play.  Maybe he just needs some motivation and possibly, he was taken aback by being traded from a SB contender to the worst NFL team. That’s 3 possibilities who would be a HUGE upgrade over what we currently have.

Draft a guy like Cunningham, Foster or Davis, get one of the above mentioned OLB’s in FA, move Alonso to the weak side, and all of a sudden we have a LB corps!

It’s also obvious we need a quality player for depth on the O-line, because we’ve seen how negatively that affects our performance, and denies  us the ability to carry on with our normal game plan, so another OG or C, may be in the cards, but probably not with our 1st or 2nd pick.

Q – I think this is my first ask Mike question. I see you guys always mentioning how in past years we always suck in December and I can’t disagree.  Different players, coaches, different uniforms, we’ve changed damn near everything. Is this the year we change that too?

Thanks for the question! You are now famous beyond your wildest dreams! You will be read worldwide!

Anyway, back to reality,  I think it’s possible that due to mitigating circumstances, we could possibly be in for a rough December. We already got shellacked by the Ravens to start December in the wrong direction, and the Arizona Cardinals are as good, or IMO, better than the Ravens. They have a much more balanced team. The Ravens feature a very good defense, but on offense, they only tore us apart, not the rest of the NFL. The Cardinals on the other had, have a very good dangerous offense, led by a veteran QB Carson Palmer, a top 3 RB in David Johnson. It doesn’t stop there, although a little older, WR Larry Fitzgerald is still a difficult cover and a star player, and Michael Floyd at 6’3” 220 is another tough cover. John Brown has the speed to go deep, so a tough trio of WR’s. Just to give you some perspective on how good David Johnson is, he has 1005 yards rushing, averaging 4.4 YPC, and also has 64 catches 704 yards. 1700 yards from scrimmage and we’re at game 13 this week. He also has 11 rushing TD’s, and 4 receiving TD’s, 15 TD’s in all. Crazy!

It’s not clear whether Jelani Jenkins will play Sunday, but as crazy as it sounds, I hope he’s healthy enough to play. He’s probably our best cover LB, which I realize isn’t saying much, but regardless, we could use him to help out. If Alonso and Jenkins are out, that leaves a combination of Mike Hull, Neville Hewitt, Spencer Paysinger and Zach Vigil. David Johnson will no doubt be drooling while savoring that matchup.

I guess what I’m saying is, I don’t think it would be fair to blame Gase if the team fails this December. I didn’t love his game plan last week, and it didn’t appear that he was able to adjust in the 2nd half either, but there are games like that for every team. I expect us to be much more competitive this week, and I think we can beat the Cards, but we have to execute a good game plan, and get a better start than we have in weeks. We can’t fall too far behind early on the Cards, because then they will bury us. If our O-line is healthy, and Alonso and Jenkins can be effective with their injuries, I think we have a fair shot.

What I don’t want to see is another game where it looks like we don’t belong on the field with our opponent. Baltimore undressed us, so I’m hoping Gase and Joseph come up with a solid plan of attack, no matter who plays Sunday. If we win this Sunday, IMO, we’ve already changed because a big bounce back win this Sunday would be big one for this team, and its young HC.

  14. I think we’re ending up middle of the pack again this year. With that said, this is what I’m thinking right now from a draft point of view:
Rd 1 Tim Williams, OLB, Alabama
Rd 2 Dorian Johnson, OG, Pitt
Rd 3 Duwaune Smoot, DE, Illinois
Rd 4 Tedric Thompson, SS, Colorado
Rd 5 Demontae Kazee, CB, San Diego St
Rd 6 James Conner, RB, Pitt
Rd 7 Carroll Phillips, OLB, Illinois

  15. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not like we didn’t know one would come out of the West, but either KC or the Raiders is taking one of the WC slots. Time to be against whoever the Broncs play.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ve said that for weeks. I had the Raiders winning the West, and the Chiefs getting the WC, but now, with Carr’s injury it looks the Chiefs might steal it.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Question is, do we win enough to take it from the Broncos. We may have to win out, or hope the Broncos just tank

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Depends on the Broncos, but in my mind at least — only way to even have a chance at the playoffs starts with us going 3-1. Heck……4-0 might not even do it.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We need the Patriots, Chiefs and Raiders to beat the Broncos, and that gives us a shot, but we still need to take care of our own business, starting Sunday against the Cardinals

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

Do you think TE OJ Howard makes it to the 2nd RD, where we would be likely to pick?

    • IDK but I’d honestly rather go into the season with Gray and Jones than I would Misi and Jenkins. I really don’t know how much of a difference a TE will make in our offense if we don’t address the issues elsewhere, like finding a G or two to get the o-line solidified.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Pittsburgh could easily take the WC too. I forgot about them. They’re playing well now, and that’s what you need to do at this time of the season

  19. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Had plans to go to the Cardinals game, but Dameon (fake UK Phin Fan) backed out cause life got in the way.

He said “how about we do the Pats game instead” Checked out the tix and said no way. Cheapest tickets in the 315 Fest section are going for $250 on Stubhub. But hey it is New Year’s Day……guessing a whole lot of Pats fans made vacay plans around the game.

  20. There’s a number of different ways we could go in this next draft when you look at the talent that should be there for us. I think it was OD who posted the other day the PBP picks for us in the first rd as being 3 different o-linemen and I said it doesn’t make sense because two were LT’s but the more you think about it we can finally get the o-line solid and pound the ball all game long no matter who we face like the Cowboys do.
That would take the pressure off Tannehill to have to win us games just like it does for Prescott because if we run the ball well EVERY game we’ll be able to pass it more successfully too. So, going with someone like Ramczyk in the first and then coming back and taking someone like Elflein or Pocic in the 2nd finally gets the o-line to where we need it to be and we don’t need to keep going there. Is it a detriment to the defensive side of the ball? Yes, but if you fix one part and the o-line is the most important part of the offense you’re done with it and then the offense will definitely be more successful.
In addition, you can put Ramczyk at LT and let Tunsil continue to play LG since he’s done so well there and you’ve got a really solid left side of your line. There’s no written rule that says we MUST move Tunsil to LT. We do what’s best for the team.

  21. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So now every performance by a QB will be compared to Tannehill good or bad? How fucking ridiculous is that? Geez!

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Lou,

    Takkarist McKinley ?

Do you think he is a DE or a LB in a 4-3 in the NFL?

I like McKinley a lot but I haven’t seen too much of UCLA in 2016

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Would it be crazy to go
    Tim williams in the 1st
    takkarist McKinley in he 2nd

That’s the kinda draft I have oils love to have
Build that defensive front 7 up

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Lou

I wouldn’t mind being great on one side of the ball. If you’re just OK on defense and offense, that’s not usually enough to get into the playoffs. If you could have either a great offense or great defense, and just be average on the other side, you can do it, because the play of the great unit masks the deficiencies in the other unit

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Matt Miller’s latest mock draft has us taking E OJ Howard in the 1st and CB Jourdan Lewis in the 2nd

He has the 1st 3 picks of the draft as Myles Garret, Reuben Foster and Jared Allen
He has Tim Williams as #8, Derek Barnet at 10, Jabril Peppers at 11. Takkaeris McKinley at 12, Zack Cunnignham at 14 and then we pick at 19

so he crushed all my dreams in one mock

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’ve seen a few people take OJ Howard. I wouldn’t mind it. Be dominant on one side of the ball, I think that works.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He also has Ryan Anderson 20, Taco Charlton as 21, Charles Harris at 30, Smoot at 32, DeMarcus Walker at 37, Jarrad Davis at 40, Solomon Thomas at 43, Rakewon McMillan at 44, Carl Lawson at 45, before we pick at 51

I really hope he is dead wrong about how quickly the pass rushers and LBs go off the board

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, I do think a good TE would make our offense really tough to stop. But they’re not easy to find. But looking for one, finding one or hoping for one has nothing to do with LB or G. You’re allowed to add more than one player in an offseason. LOL

    • yes, you are but if you don’t get the o-line to the point where they are healthy and can play together for an entire season it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a good TE.
it’s not as easy as it sounds. if it were, we’d be there by now but we aren’t. I really can care less about the TE position at this point. If you get the o-line to the point where you can run the ball effectively EVERY week you can have Gray and Jones playing TE and we’ll be able to use them in the passing game the way we want.
However, if we don’t do anything about the LB unit either and address TE instead we’re dead in the water. TE is NOT a major need for this team right now.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not a major need, a want. The more good players you have at every position the better you are. I don’t think wanting a TE has anything to do with the front 7 or OL depth.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Some people think Howard is the best TE prospect in years

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

He always looks great in games when I watch him

Jordan Leggett (Clemson) is worth a look as well

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      O.J.?

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont feel that way about him. He’s good, he has good hybrid skill sets, but i think Hunter Henry was that guy. There is a level of just football smarts that Herny had that i dont think Howard has. I think a guy like Henry recognizes when he needs to come back and alter the route to get open to help the QB, as well as when he should stick to the route, depending on if he is a target or an outlet receiver. I also think he really has the feel for outsmarting the competition. I feel like howard has the better athletic ability, but he isnt a Witten, Henry or Olsen to some extent. I see him more like a Antonio Gates kinda guy.

  28. My top 32:

To claify, calling him Antonio Gates is to say he has elite receiving skills, and pretty good blocking skills but he isnt a Witten type who are really really smart players to go on top of good skill sets. Gates is more talented than Witten athletically, but i still feel id take a Jason Witten over an Antonio Gates any day. Tony Gonzales was like best of both worlds, easily one of the most elite TE’s in history of the NFL.

  36. Last year the Browns took Ogbah and Nassib and Brugler has them taking Garrett with the #1. If I’m them I’m trading back a couple of spots and taking Fournette. They’ve got ZERO run game.

  37. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Trubinsky I guess
    I don’t know…maybe Watson

I don’t care about the QBs in this raft
I haven’t even looked at them
I don’t know how good they are

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Are they coming from Cuba? 😉

    • Rang has them taking Trubisky #1 overall and I just brought it up because of the Brugler pick. They already made the mistake of drafting two undersized guys to play DE in their 3-4 last year and they’d be doing the same thing again this year. Garrett goes about 275 and you really need to get a 3-4 end from college or a 4-3 DT to play the 3-4 DE position in the NFL. These “experts” make a lot of stupid picks themselves. So do the teams for that matter.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes 3-4 DEs are usually 290+ and some 3-4 teams use much bigger guys than that.

      • I do a mock for the Browns every year because they suck so bad and I do one to “fix” their ills but they never listen. This year I’d take Jonathan Allen #1 and Jaleel Johnson in the 2nd to fix their d-line. Move Ogbah to that pass rushing 3-4 OLB spot where he belongs and then grab Foster or Cunningham with their 2nd top ten pick.

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Guess last Sunday opened the floodgates on draft talk……still a game to go next weekend. We are still in the hunt and so are the Cards (only 1.5 games out of the WC with an easy finish schedule).

And unlike the Cards, even if we lose it ain’t all over……least technically.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah man, I’m looking forward to Sunday.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Win that one and next one is against the Yets…….we don’t win that one and we are better off losing anyhow. Back to playoff talk if we are 9-5 though.

    • I’d rather win this one because it makes it a lot easier to finish with a winning record. I really want to see this team step up and finish strong, 10-6, but I’ll settle for 9-7 I guess. Either way, we need to win this game. I can care less about the playoffs. To me it’s icing on the cake right now but let’s finish strong first and see where that takes us.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Absolutely — would be different if we were talking where in the top ten in the draft we were going to land, but that boat has sailed. The problems that come with winning games.

  40. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

9-5 sounds so good to me

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I don’t worry about draft positioning. If you go back and look at prior drafts you see a lot of early busts or so so players and some really good players taken in the middle and late 1st rd. It’s not an exact science. That’s why I always debate Randy about a top 10 pick. It’s just a number.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Seems like we are going to be mid-to-late round drafters anyhow. Just a crap shoot at that point. What’s the difference btwn #13 and #23? Answer is not much…unless you are trading out.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of times it’s just a matter of someone has to go before the other. That’s where that whole lateral draft board thingy comes into play. 😉

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

i get it is annoying. i think i had said before all the qb talk was annoying. doesnt happen as much anymore cause of the win streak.

  46. I’m talking about the Draft in general because we really don’t know where we’re going to end up picking and we don’t know what the final evals on talent will be for a few months yet. so, it’s kind of impossible to talk about draft and who we will take. more about what positions and we all know what they SHOULD be

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah I don’t start getting into specific prospects until after the combine. That’s when you find out guys are not 6-3 250 and run 4.5 40s, they’re 6-1 240 and run 4.8. LOL

Can you figure out who my example is?

Lou, nobody here really over hypes Tannehill. We just want him to play solid. He’s the QB of our team. Many of us defend him from constant criticism as if he’s the only one playing the game and always the reason we lose. Then we become Tanny lovers. Whateves! LOL

It definitely is a team game and it is annoying when the TEAM wins games and so many are talking about the win as if Tannehill won the games for the team.

LMFAO, is that anything like when the team loses games and all you can see is how he qb lost the game.

I don’t think I have read that ONCE on here. There may have been praise for him playing well, but most of us understand the team aspect and don’t put wins on the QB alone.

BTW it is annoying to some people but perhaps not others…

so every one has this right, it is okay to make excuses for carr but not t hill

Carr had a bad game. No excuses. But it’s laughable to even compare Tannehill with Carr. Tannehill has never even sniffed an MVP type season. Heck, he hasn’t even sniffed a playoff game. Comparing Carr to Thill is a mockery. It’s the equivalent of comparing a Porsche to a Honda.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Hopefully it’s at least an Accord V6 Coupe with a stick. lol

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      Yeah
      I agree
      Carr is an MVP candidate

We went through this with Newton last year after the Super Bowl performance

There is always a fight about Tannehill and the amount or lack of criticism he takes or does not take
there is no happy medium on the subject

but every time a QB having a good year has a bad game – I don’t know why anyone makes that comparison (which is what happened with Carr and Newton)

Frankly I think Tannehill is playing well this season even though he had a bad game vs AZ

So I don’t even know why its being discussed, except we all have elephant memories

arguments about whether its right or not to criticize the QB, won’t die on this blog (or on twitter either)
So we hear some arguments on the subject that have taken an extreme turn

I’ve been guilty of it myself

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Hopefully you’re not looking in a crystal ball. Bad game against the ravens. We haven’t played AZ yet. Lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Nobody did that either. But I’m not ready to put Carr that high yet either. He’s very good though.

  55. D's avatar D says:

Lou, im a big fan of Jeremy Sprinkle as well. I feel the same, he is the guy id most like to target, especially since i think he is severely undervalued right now and if that remains, he would also be a value pick.

Also to Lou, i notice you didnt have Quincy Wilson on your list, he should be right up there next to Tabor and Humphrey, he has better size and speed than both, and skills to play press, zone, and man. I think the lack of time as a starter might be concerning but the guy can flat out play that position. Id be just as comfortable with them selecting him in the first as any of the other CB’s.

  56. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

and while I would like to see us get into the playoffs, I think they shot themselves in the foot too much this year so I doubt it and even if they did get in I feel like we would see a repeat of the Ravens game.

well then it is a good damn thing no one did. if carr just had a bad game then so be it, it is the only one if his games i had ever seen. i just commented on how bad he was that game

    • You literally just compared him to Tannehill by mentioning what pundits say about Tannehill and how people can give excuses for Carr, but not Tannehill. You’re outright defending Tannehill (and I’ve seen you defend him constantly before I started commenting). He (Tannehill) doesn’t even deserve to be in the same sentence as Carr and if that’s the only game you watched Carr in, you have absolutely no right to talk about him. The guy has led his team on like 7 4th quarter wins this season alone, has his team at 10-3 and has been a stud all year. He has one bad game (playing injured) and you say you’re not impressed. What a joke. Go watch some of his highlights.

I’ve stated since Tannehill’s 2nd season that I don’t think he’s a 90+% shotgun gunslinger where everything goes through him and he throws it all day 40+ times and that’s how we win. I’ve always felt he was better more under center with balance from a running game, play-action and bootlegs utilizing his legs and the fact that he’s excellent throwing on the run. During our win streak that’s what he was doing. 32, 25, 28, 24, 34 and 30 pass attempts. Our record when Tannehill throws 37 times or more is not very good. But there are a lot of reasons for that other than just him.

BUT if it’s pouring, we’ll probably just go inside the stadium and try to stay somewhat dry. I’ll leave my cell on. 98. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

IF YOU FOLKS look carefully at the seats at the top of this page you’ll see the seats on the top sideline (Miami’s sideline) are about 20-30% filled between the two 30-yard line. This is where most of Ross’s “Lazyboy Seats” are located, along with the 1st two rows in each end zone. 20-30% occupancy has been about par for the course since Ross installed these incredibly expensive seats just before the 2015 season. Those like me who WERE on the Dolphins side in the lower deck were told to move to the end zone or to the visitor’s side unless we wanted to pony-up $1,000-$2,500 per ticket per game.
