Colonpokey:  I brought this!

The Flying Pig:  What is it?

Mustachio:  It looks like bread?

Colonpokey:  That’s right!  Look inside the bread…Its a Bryce Petty Sandwich!

The Flying Pig:  You can’t even hang it on the tree!

Colonpokey:  You don’t hang it on the tree Piggy….You place it in a hospital bed and feed it applesauce for the rest of its life just like the real Bryce Petty….oh my poor Bryce Petty…

Wedge:  Um…okay Mustachio…your turn

Mustachio:  I want to honor the Dolphins with my ornament for parting ways with Brent Grimes and that Puttana MIKO!

censoredornament

The Flying Pig:  Is that a picture of what I think Mustachio?

Mustachio:  Yes prosiciutto!  I thought it was the best way to represent Miko Grimes

Wedge:  But its a……

Mustachio:  That’s right!  Its a cunt!

The Flying Pig:  Um…Mustachio, maybe we should put that one in a spot on the tree where no one can find it..

The Flying Pig:  This is my ornament for the top of thee tree

Wedge:  What is it?  I don’t recognize it…

PIGGY OPENS UP A BOX.  A BRIGHT LIGHT SHINES FROM THE BOX

The Flying Pig:  I know…it’s been a while…

PIGGY REACHES INSIDE THE BOX AND BEGINS TO PULL OUT HIS ORNAMENT

The Mediocre White:  Its beautiful!

Mustachio:  Que bella!

PIGGY PLACES IT ON TOP OF THE TREE

LMAO @ Applesauce – This was great Piggy! Really funny – Thanks!

  2. Mike E. says:

So it looks like I’m in the championship in my FF league. I’m excited. I think I have a decent shot, and at worst, I get 2nd place. In one of my other leagues, I’m down exactly 25.80 points, and I have Kirk Cousins tomorrow night. It’s gonna be real close. In the Mob league, I’m hanging on to 32.40 lead, and Twice has RB Jonathan Stewart and the Panthers DEF. This should be close too.

  3. Tim Knight says:

Great win! 9-5, first winning season since 2008. Go Coach Gase!!!

Sad to say my wife’s mom passed away earlier today. Tough last few days.

    Go Phins!!!

  4. olddolphan says:

Sorry to read about the passing of your wife’s mom, Tim. Hope she has a bird’s eye view of Miami’s first playoff victory since the 2000 season!

  5. ukfinfan says:

My sincerest condolences Tim. You’ve had an annus horribilis and a half this year buddy, and my thoughts are very much with you. Your strength will no doubt be a huge pillar for your family to lean on once again. RIP m-i-l

Winning record on the season, winning record at home. Is it possible we might even have a winning record in December too?!? These Dolphins are still the cardiac Fins, but much more fun to watch and root for again. Sundays are no longer shite!!!

  6. ukfinfan says:

Just take a minute to digest that!

    • Brian in NY says:

I was just saying to a friend last night that we averaged about 70 more yards with him in there. It’s going to be tough sledding for us with a poor running game.

      • ukfinfan says:

It’s amazing! Just wish MP could stay healthier. As you say, you need to be able to run more/better from here on in so it will no doubt put more pressure on MM. Still, it’s all gravy for me now!

  7. Brian in NY says:

    Sorry for your loss Tim.

  8. Brian in NY says:

LMAO @ “Bryce Petty sandwich! Nice job Piggy- this made me laugh this morning.

  9. wyoming85 says:

    annus horribilis?????????????

I think I had that last night after eating those Jalapeno poppers! 😉

  10. wyoming85 says:

Man Tim You’ve had a bad row!

  11. herdfan says:

Tim my condolences to you and your wife and family. It’s never easy to lose a parent and the holidays make it harder. I hope you all find peace that your in laws are together again.

  12. son of a son of a shula says:

Peace Tim and Family, sorry pal.

  13. olddolphan says:

MIAMI’s currently a 3 point underdog at Buffalo. I know I’m beating a dead horse with this issue BUT we would NOT be in a running game deficit (154.5 yds/game with Pouncey and 79.5 yds/game without Pouncey) IF we had adequate back-ups to our starting O-Linemen. THIS IS WHY addressing our O-Line shortcomings is THE NUMBER ONE OFF-SEASON PRIORITY. IF we can run for over 125 yards total against Buffalo, we can, and SHOULD, win this game. But I don’t see us doing that with the current patchwork O-Line.

  14. sb7mvp says:

If we want to run successfully these next few game we are going to have to try to do so with different formations and extra lineman. Put Sims and Gray in the fullback spot. Anything to get our runners in the second level where they can shine. Especially this Buffalo game. We need to punch them right in the metaphorical mouth. We can’t afford to get behind with either of these next two teams.

  15. Mike E. says:

    Tim

My condolences bud. Thankfully the suffering has ended for her. My best to you and your family. Hope you can do the best you can to have a Happy Holidays.

  16. Mike E. says:

“Sundays are no longer shite!!!” LOL UK, couldn’t have said that better myself my friend. 🙂

  17. bookman11 says:

    Tim,
I feel horrible for your loss. Hang in there and stay as positive as you can.

I hope you can enjoy the Holidays despite the circumstances.

Peace to you and your family

  18. wyoming85 says:

  19. Mike E. says:

    LOL Wyo! Very possible

  20. Happy Monday all! I ended up going to the game Saturday night which was awesome. Nothing feels better than watching the Dolphins stomp the Jets in person and then watching all the Jet fans storm out in the 3rd quarter. Great early Christmas present 🙂

    • Ken says:

Cool and way to represent. A bunch of us went to the game a couple of years back where we won 23-3. I actually kind of felt sorry for the Jet fans near us

  21. Ken says:

Condolences to Tim and his family

  22. wyoming85 says:

    I see a trend!

  23. wyoming85 says:

    Ken
I’m kinda torn on the subject!

All the Restrictions that they have about money in the NCAA. and the Money they will get as top 20 picks (First round anyways)!

At 50 I don’t snow ski anymore for the fact if I break myself I stop getting paid!

  24. We need 1 win and 1 Denver loss and we’re in. Or we win out and we’re in no matter what. If we win out and KC losses one game, we take the 5th seed rather than the 6th.

  25. herdfan says:

WTG Vinnie! That had to be a fun game to go to once you got past the 1st qtr.

    • stangerx says:

Herd now I know what they guy who took this pic felt like shortly after he took it. I been thundered by the Herd — congrats on the finals.

  26. stangerx says:

Tim — my heart goes to your and your wife. Somethings put football in perspective, at the same time hope you make time to pop in and take your mind off with the little good this team has going on.

  27. stangerx says:

Pig — glad your whole crew was so happy gathered around the tree. And you never know — that Jordan ornament might be proudly hanging on your tree next year.

  28. sb7mvp says:

Lol @ not fair to the fans. Fans always think they’re entitled to stuff.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I do think the ncaa should take steps to preserve the best players in the game

      If they paid athletes
They would have them under contract
And require their play in bowl games

  29. sb7mvp says:

Paying the athletes is a separate discussion and don’t get me started on how worthless bowl games are.

These guys get a $200K + education and the chance to showcase their skills for a very lucrative career, forgive me for not feeling badly that they don’t get paid.

I think he’s focussing on her centre of gravity. That’s the line I plan to use if I am ever in that position and subsequently get arrested!

  33. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

To elaborate, I understand your point was not that they need to get paid, but to make them locked in to play in bowl game, they could just have a clause in every athletes scholarship stating if the school achieves a bowl game, they MUST play in the game, or all future or past scholarship monies are voided, and must be paid immediately. Simple as that. I feel that every school would have the right to do that too.

  34. The Flying Pig says:

I do think the ncaa should take steps to preserve the best players in the game

    If they paid athletes
They would have them under contract
And require their play in bowl games

    ———————

A vast majority of the Bowl games are bullshit. They’re nothing more than gimmicks in order to generate even more revenue while forcing players to play a game during the Holiday break, missing time with their families and friends. I applaud the players who skip any Bowl game that isn’t one of the top tier games. The School, NCAA, and various companies should not be taking advantage of student athletes.

Does it suck for the fans that miss their favorite players who decide to skip the game? Yes, but the players have lives too outside the football field and they, just like every other student, earned the holiday break after a long semester of work.

    • Mike E. says:

I disagree. For all intents and purposes, these athletes ARE getting paid, so to ask them to play in a bowl game is well within each school’s rights. It’s a two way street here. The athletes are used to make the school and their football program money, and the athletes use the school to get an education, a diploma in some cases if they stay 4 or 5 years, and a platform to showcase their wares to get into the NFL. I think it’s completely fair for them to be obligated to play in the bowl game.

  35. wyoming85 says:

    About to get paid!

  36. Ken says:

    Wyoming:
I hear you and I know these kids have a lot of money at stake but they also made a commitment to a team and to me that means something. If they are worried about a career ending injury then get an insurance policy. Loyds of London offers them and I know they have worked with several universities in the past to make them affordable for the student athletes

  37. Mike E. says:

    Vinnie

For example, say a kid went to Harvard Law, and he has an internship with a huge law firm, that was enabled by the student’s hard work, and of course going to Harvard Law, does that student NOT have to work at that internship because the school has college break? I don’t think it works like that Vinnie

    • I had a college internship through my school and I did not have to work during my breaks. The internship was run through my school. I did not get paid, I had to put X amount of hours in and when my school had off, I had off for that internship. If the internship was paying the student, they should be required to go as it’s not affiliated with the school. However, you cannot get paid for any program run through the college.

  38. Tim Knight says:

Thanks folks for all the kind words. My mother-in-law was at home with us in hospice for the last 4 weeks so this was expected at some point. She fought and didn’t want to go but life’s cycle decided it was time.

  39. Mike E. says:

I think it’s completely fare for them to be obligated to play in the bowl game.

    ———————————

They aren’t getting paid. Schools have a set amount of scholarships and in order to offset those “costs” they simply raise the tuition for everybody else, which in turn makes it look like the scholarship athletes are saving even more money.

Schools make millions upon millions of dollars off large football/basketball programs (way more than what it costs to hand out their scholarships). They should have no obligation to play in a game during a time the school is closed for classes. Every other student is on their holiday vacation, yet you’re going to force some students to stay for X weeks to practice and play in a bowl game that, for a majority of the time, means nothing just so the school can make more money off of you?

    • Mike E. says:

Ha, but they’re not just students Vinnie, they’re on a football team that earned a berth in a bowl game. Like I said, it’s a two way street. Them making millions of dollars for the schools football program is also what got them the free education in the first place. It’s business. So answer me, should the Law clerk that’s the Harvard student just tell his internship to fuck off, I’m off for the holidays?

      • Mike E. says:

It’s also what gives THEM the opportunity to make millions of dollars in the NFL.

      • Yes, if it’s run through the school, which is exactly what my internship was (see above). NCAA-run programs are not businesses. They are non-profit sports programs for students. A lot of the revenue generated from the sports is given back to the schools, which further negates the costs of scholarships for the universities. The students aren’t getting paid. They are getting free education that costs the school virtually nothing. Is it considered making money if it’s not costing anything to send you to that place? Bowl games are nothing more than a money maker for outside businesses, sponsors, the schools, etc. Very little of that money is then used to assist other students for scholastic scholarships.

  40. wyoming85 says:

    Ken & Mike E

I am not for or against.

I do have an issue with “Fans” telling someone what they should do with their life though.

Everyone of us makes our life decisions alone! To expect these kids to do different because they play football is a little Presumptuous on our part?

If they are going to forfeit their eligibility to play college ball they can start doing commercials and get paid!

Some don’t have that option so they might as well play the bowl game!

    ———————————————
    They do pay them….
in some cases its over 160,000 dollars payment.

Full scholarships 3-4 years isnt chump change. All meals covered, all laundry services covered. Free room an board. Free utilities.

I think the only thing they should do is pay them royalties off items that uses their name. I dont think paying them to play is the right route to go, but their name has value and they should get a part of that money. Personally i think it should be put in a graduation fund or go to high value insurance plans for possible injuries, but i dont think there should be payment to play, because their scholarship is that payment.

  42. Mike E. says:

    Wyo

Some of these kids that are playing in these bowl games won’t have a career in the NFL, simply because they’re just not talented enough. I’m sure all those kids really want to win this game, it’s like their Super Bowl, and it’s also some of those students final game, so I’m sure they aren’t thrilled that their best player decided to say FU, time for me to collect a big paycheck. I also think if Universities put a clause in the scholarship saying you will be obligated to play in a Bowl game if the school earns a berth, who wouldn’t sign that?

  43. D says:

Vinnie, that scholarship is a payment. Schools make money off of them its true, but schools also use that money to go back to the betterment of education for all. If anything, if they were getting paid, then you need to switch to a calary cap situation, let them negotiate the money with the players as they see fit but cap the spending so that it can be a couple wealthy universities bringing in everyone. UF for examle makes BILLIONS off gatorade royalties, we could buy every great player out there and still have more money left than most other universities have to spend to start with,

    • D says:

I do agree that these guys need to get something for what is being made off THEIR NAME, but to me thats where it ends.

      • Mike E. says:

They do D, they get drafted into the NFL, and make millions of dollars. Like I said, the ones that don’t get into the NFL can’t be happy that their teammate decided that he was more important than his team

  44. Mike E. says:

    Vinnie

It’s not a matter of what it costs the school to give the scholarship, although I think you’re completely underestimating that, it’s the value of the scholarship and the value of being part of a program that is virtually a ticket to the NFL if you have enough talent. Have you seen the dorms, the gyms, the facilities that some of these schools have for their student athletes? Millions upon millions of dollars. They get treated like royalty for 4 or 5 years.

  45. wyoming85 says:

I personally hate people telling me what I should do so maybe I project that to others?

You will see a Fournette commercial before the bowl games are over!

  46. stangerx says:

You can always quit the team….no way to stop that. And as it should be.

At the same time, on my draft board at least I would be noting that the kid did. Maybe it makes sense as far as his future, but at the same time he is quitting on his team and all his teammates.

Would be different if these guys were doing what all top draft choices do.

  47. bookman11 says:

I hate to jump in here and go off in a different direction……but everyone is probably waiting in eager anticipation as to who the Bookman survivor pool team is this week. (waiting for Toba’s pick too in his pool)………………….dramatic pause…………..still dramatic pausing…………………I am selecting the Dallas Cowboys. This was my first gut choice…the other I was considering was taking NO over Tampa.

    • stangerx says:

Getting the Cowboys done makes sense since they might have it all clinched up next week.and they are a better play than the Saints in this one.

      How many left?

      • bookman11 says:

2 games left. I am a little nervous…hope they don’t have everything clinched and rest their starters.

      • bookman11 says:

It is a MNF game, so they will know

      • stangerx says:

Didn’t know they were playing Mon nite. So you a big part of your bet would be that the Giants win….but then again Cowboys are most likely of no use the last week. Tough choice.

    —————-

A scholarship isn’t payment when the scholarship itself doesn’t cost the university a dime. Sure, the students aren’t taking money out of their pocket for tuition/boarding but there’s nothing going in their pocket. Big time athletes don’t care about the education because they know they’re moving on to the NFL. College is just their stepping stone. The stupid rules that force athletes to go to school before turning professional is solely based about making money off their talents/name.

The costs of these scholarships are offset by simple accounting. They raise the price of tuition for everybody else. Also, the NCAA gives back hundreds of millions of dollars to schools across the country. What do they do with the money from games like this and throughout the year? Usually to purchase more athletic facilities because they know that’s their bread and butter. Very little money goes back to the average student. They don’t give a fuck about the average student. They are the suckers paying for everything and lots of these students are going to the school because they’re fans of the sports programs.

  51. D says:

I think the compromise should be Scholarship for the athletes, same as it is currently. This is your payment from the school for playing football for them.

Royalties of every sale of a jersey or items that has their name on it. NCAA benefits of those sales from royalties, the schools benefit via royalties, the player should not be an exception.

I believe they should also be able to, if asked to do them, make money off events where they do autograph signings, unless these are charitable events, and in that case the player should be in control of those appearances. They dontwant to do it for charity, they shouldn’t be made to. Let them be dbags if they want to, will only hurt them later.

I dont see any issues with letting them make money off who they are as a college player, i just dont think there should be payments. I dont think the college game should be turned into im here to make money situation.

Id also be ok if they forced the NCAA and schools to buy insurance policies, or trust fund, on these players to protect them incase a situation like with Marcus Lattimore happens and you go from about to make millions to no career in one hit. Perhaps a percentage of the royalties the school and NCAA gets should go into something like that. If the player doesn’t have to use it, they Universities can cash them back in once the player leaves.

There does need to be a little more commitment from the NCAA and Universities than just the scholarships, though i dont feel just flat out paying these guys to play is right either.

    • I would agree, but don’t you notice that many schools don’t put names on their jerseys now? Why is that? It’s their loophole to prevent this royalties argument from occurring. The school could say the number represents everybody who wore it, rather than one specific player. I’ve heard it a million times. “The name that matters is the name in the front, not in the back. That’s why we don’t put last names on our jerseys! We represent the school, not ourselves!”

It’s just the sly way of being greedy assholes.

  52. If you want an idea of what I’m talking about, look no further than U of New Hampshire. They’re not even a large school, but look where their priorities were…

    Tim,

Sorry to hear about your loss. God bless.

  54. drg says:

Classic good Matt Moore game. We need at least one more from him. Despite our awful run defense, this team just seems to find a way to get it done. Hoping to see that continue Sunday. It’s a big one.

  55. Realist says:

    Tim,

I’m very sorry for your loss. My prayers for your family in this difficult time.

  56. The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

That sort of incentive (forfeiting scholarships $) probably would not be much incentive

A guy will still say, I’m not going to play
I will pay my tuition instead
    It doesn’t solve the problem

Likewise my idea doesn’t work unless the $ is competitive

    It’s the whole point really
You can’t tell these guys to risk NFL money without soemthing of value

College football – the ncaa, functions like “tradition” is going to keep them from basic free market principles forever

And it won’t, athletes are smarter now and the people around them (agents) will guide them

It’s really a business decision, not who feels bad for who and who is right

What’s it worth to have Leonard Fornette play in a bowl?
I bet it’s worth millions to the ncaa and the sec
But since we treat these players as “amateurs” based on ncaa rules, we can even explore it

If college football keeps relying on “tradition” instead of sharing their profits with the people helping to bring in that profit, they are going to loose a lot of viewership and a lot of $

  57. The Flying Pig says:

You guys really don’t beleive an undergraduate scholarship is anywhere near the profit the ncaa is making do you?

    I mean get serious
    It’s a billion dollar industry

I bet you many schools actually get more money back from professional athletes that donate as alumni than they actually give out

Dan Marino’s college education probably cost less than 50k at Pittsburgh
How much do you think he gave them after he left Pitt

My fucking law school tries to hit me up for alumni donations only 6 mos after I graduated

The NCAA is a fraud. Generally education has some of those issues. They want you to beleive they are philanthropoc institutions but they are very focused on profit

Giving a student athlete a scholarship to get them to perform for free is not much different than giving native Americans blankets for land

  58. The Flying Pig says:

    Also – think about this
These are mostly state schools (not private) funded by ate tax payer money

The scholarships/education you out a value of – costs them nothing to dole out

      • sb7mvp says:

The way the world is today and the internet, many things are possible. Information is everywhere. Also, kids can take college classes in HS and be a sophomore before they graduate.

  63. Mike E. says:

    Piggy

Are most of these guys getting this treatment and free education if they didn’t have athletic talent? No shot. The NFL doesn’t draft kids out of high school. I guess we could argue this all day, these kids get a great deal, a super fantastic deal, regardless of where the money comes from, it’s being offered to them via the various universities across the country. Again, it’s not just the money they don’t have to pay to go to school, it’s the room, board, meals, the fantastic facilities they get to use, and then, if they’re talented enough, they to get a ticket to the NFL. Is it really a lot to ask them play to in a Bowl Game? Isn’t that what this whole convo is about?

    • The Flying Pig says:

Its really not a great deal
penny for penny, it pales in comparison to the profits these athletes bring

college is basically the minor leagues of the NFL
but in this minor league – they sell out stadiums and the schools and NCAA reap the rewards without paying the employees

if the Durham Bulls sold out baseball stadiums, they would probably pay their minor leagues more –

I mean that’s just how you run a business, you compensate the people who bring value bc that makes you more $ so you can keep those people

everyone else (in the private sector) is getting a piece of the profits their industry brings

that is normally the way a free market works
the industry, the profits, the value to those profits
      those control who gets what

So Fourrnette and college players say – I’m not getting paid here, so I’m going to the NFL and I’m not going to do something that might devalue the profits I can ,make there. Its a smart move by a player when the NCAA functions the way it does

if it functioned like a free market instead of pretending to be an Altrusic institution – this is never an issue, bc Fourtnette has reason to play in a bowl game

IMO you reap what you sow

I don’t buy exception to athletes because “hey you get a free education” which amazingly isn’t even paid for by the people reaping the benefits of the profits

you can argue all day that they get something value
bc something is better than nothing so its true

but do you really think they are compensated like some one as intrical to the profits they reap. They don’t get a piece of the pie. College Football is not altruistic environment
but the proponents of these NCAA rules act like it is and pretend it is.

I don’t care that they are getting rich – I care that they try to bullshit us all and act like its not a free market like they are doing these kids a favor by exploiting them, They want free labor

when free labor moves on – can you blame free labor

if it wasn;t free a guy like Fournette doesn’t risk risk millions of dollars by playing in bowl game. He makes millions.
if he was treated like a guy that was worth millions as a college athlete to begin with this controversy never rears its head

but instead we act like he his somehow obligated

What did the NCAA ever do for you to deserve such loyalty? “You get a free education” is one of the biggest con jobs in modern society

  64. finfanrob says:

I thought both the Sims TD catch and the ball placement looked wrong in live action

Gase should not have had to throw the red flag IMO
      especially the Sims TD

      • stangerx says:

I felt the same……but Gase pulled out the red flag and proved us both wrong, but then again he had whoever it was looking at the replays before he did. But that is just good management.

      • The Flying Pig says:

I mean that the SIms TD was called wrong on the field and I could see it in live action

I thought it was a no brainer TD

of course I am a bit biased when it comes to these teams
        😉

its a shame Gase had to use his challenges so quickly in the game

      • stangerx says:

Your eyes were better than mine……I thought it was a no go, until Gase threw the flag….and at that point thought he must have done it for his normal smart reason.

That Linda Ronstadt play was awesome.
You know when Jarvis scored – Blue Bayou

  67. Mike E. says:

I’m paying for 2 kids in college right now, and be thrilled if either of them got a full scholarship to play a fucking game. I think we’re definitely looking at it from completely different perspectives. You just seem to see it from the perspective of how much money these institutions make, and I look at it from the perspective how lucky these kids are to be coddled for 4 years, get great housing and meals, an education and a degree, and all they have to do is play a game a week for a few weeks.

Do you fault corporations that make trillions of dollars for only paying some workers minimum wage? I think these athletes are very well compensated for what they have to do, and I can’t see past that.

    • stangerx says:

MIke E — one of my first bosses had a son who got a full scholarship to James Madison to play DE. Not like Ohio State or anything, but not sch a bad football school either.

Can still remember after the kid’s soph year the Dad telling me, “he’s decided not to play football anymore cause he wants to spend time playing drums for his rock group, but what can I do?……my wife says it is OK.”

      Goodbye free ride.

      • Mike E. says:

I think he did the right thing if he had another dream to pursue, but how often is that easy a choice to make? I would assume either his parents helped him with tuition, or now the kid has thousands in student loans

    • The fallacy with your analogy is that the worker’s making minimum wage is that they are not the reason why the company is making trillions of dollars. They are doing low skill jobs most days that are easily replaceable. The “student” athletes (if you want to even call them that) are the main reason why the college is making money. Their talents have a direct correlation with the profits that everybody is reaping.

The perks that the athletes get while at school – especially the ones who go pro – pales in comparison to the profits that the NCAA, the school, and private companies make by riding the coattails of top tier athletes. They ride their name to the bank, give them minimal in return, and then leach them of more money when these athletes go pro and donate back to the school. The NCAA (and state universities) have the biggest sham going which they facade with their philanthropic/altruistic ideological bullshit. The only reason why basketball players were forced to play a year in college before going pro is solely money. March Madness brings in more revenue than any collegiate sporting event in the world. It’s only obvious that you force the best talent to play in it.

The NCAA wanted to get a little of the cut so they worked with the NFL/NBA to get rules established that essentially funneled athletes into the college atmosphere. College programs are now glorified minor leagues, but the athletes don’t get a piece of the pie. They get a scholarship which costs the universities nothing and means nothing to the top tier athletes when they have their eyes on professional ball. Let’s be real, the top athletes don’t give a damn about the college or the scholarship. They have little interest in it, nor do the benefit from it. If given the opportunity, they’d skip college and go straight pro.

    Mike

I do not fault corporations for maximizing profit
I do fault them for not having vision and losing money

I read my posts and it kinda sounds like I am playing a tiny violin for college athletes

If you think about it Jaylon Smith does better than me at 24 (as opposed to my 43)
    He’s hardly sympathetic

My argument is not so much “poor athletes”
its more like – “that’s the free market”

of course he is not playing in the bowl game
there is too much money to be lost

but that dynamic only exists bc of the NCAA rules

they would probably stand to profit more if they did things to encourage athletes to play, namely paying those athletes

  71. naplesfan2010 says:

I thought we should’ve signed Griff Whalen. Since he was released by the pasties* we could put him on the practice squad and pick his brain about Brady’s current tendencies etc. I doubt he had enough time up there to build anymore loyalty to them than us.

If athletes get paid, then they should not get free dorms, uniforms, food, medical care, steroids, automobiles, pussy, etc. that the colleges pay for now through the alum donors and corp sponsor kickbacks.

Since few of them make any attempt to masquerade as scholars anyway, they should not be listed as students in good standing in pursuit of a degree and should cease to receive sham diplomas. No tuition reimbursement, no tutors, no shill stand-ins for exams, no grad-student written papers, etc.

They should be required to pay income tax, social security and medicare deductions, and should buy their own health insurance and employ their own coaches, training staff, and contract agents.

    • The Flying Pig says:

its hard to legislate “free pussy”
but yeah – its only one form of compensation
      no double dipping

I agree on paying taxes and basis state/city services
income should always be treated that way

they probably would have to hire accountants to take care of that stuff
it would be a job just like any other

but coaches and training….well that is probably up to the school
and I bet Oregon does a better job of recruiting than the smaller schools with that Nuke factory they erected

If we pay the football players do we pay the cross country runners?
How do we know the 17-yr old recruits will be good enough to pay?
Do we start paying the high school stars next?
    Pony League? Little League?
How much does a YMCA tailback get at age 7?
Does he get a cut of the bake-sale proceeds?

    • The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know how you figure this out when its said and done

      but its not even discussed

You probably take all of the profit from every NCAA sport
      put it in one pot
      take a small %
and spread it evenly to the players in all schools and in all sports

its pretty much like any labor agreement
not much different to how the CBA sets min salaries and rookies salaries etc.

it makes sense when you don’t take it to extremes (HS and little league)

really – they can just let a guy like Fournette sign autogrpaphs or do local commercials instead of suspending him and sanctioning the school – that is the current NCAA climate

  78. The Flying Pig says:

I bet the NFL will never go for that Naples

They are basically paying the NCAA so the NCAA makes a profit

why would the nfl pay for that

  79. D says:

NCAA and the Universities arent hurt at all by Fournette or McAfferty itting their bowl game. They get the same share of the same amount of money. Fournette and McAfferty really arent hurting their teams because those bowl games really dont amount to much anyways since they arent part of the championship games. Again, the money is settled, there arent even bonuses for winning or losing the game, outside maybe some bonuses specifically for the coaches, in the way of milestone bonuses or incentive bonuses. I think as a player you should want every opportunity to showcase your talent, to go out there and compete, because as a lot of us former players find out, the road eventually ends.

Thats their choice though, if they want to forgoe the game and put up a really impressive combine, or they want to skip the chance for injury by doing something that took them off national television and showing their talent against a competative team to really give the scouts another good look at them, so be it. Thats their choice and it comes with the consequences and benefits that it comes with. There will be drawbacks from this but if they think it is better than the risk of getting hurt and dropping a round or 2, i think its up to them to make that choice because its their future at stake,

    • The Flying Pig says:

You mean bc the bowl games are paid for advance (to the school and NCAA) right?

      You are probably right

but if you think of it as trickling down over time
and less people tune in to watch LSU or Stanford this year
then those bowl contracts won’t get bigger and might get smaller —- over time of course

but yeah, I think you are right

  83. D says:

I looked it up Piggy, the important part for the revenue of the school isnt winning or losing the bowl game its which one you qualified for. The conferences and the teams themselves get monies for first qualifying for a bowl game, then dependent on the bowl game, they get certain amounts of money for that. Basically once you are qualified for a bowl, and assigned a bowl game, how much the teams make is done. Winning or losing of it doesn’t change how much they make.So they could literally play all subs if they wanted to, money would be the same.

Now im sure if the games become non-competitive and people stop tuning in that may change some things, but it wouldnt change how its set up right now.

My boss had enough and picked up the next two years at the school cause his son wanted to concentrate on playing for a band at the school instead of playing football at a private school. 86. naplesfan2010 says:

Pig i did not say for the NFL to pay guys while in college.
I said why don’t athletes think of the money they make in the pros
as having been partially earned by their college play,
since in fact that is somewhat the case.

NFL careers are very short, but most can make a lifetime of income in 5-10 yrs.
    Unless they blow it recklessly,
but all workers are in danger of blowing cash and not saving for retirement.

    • The Flying Pig says:

You are just asking the player to change the way he thinks about it

there is a rookie scale set
it has nothing to do with college

I’m not really talking about what the athlete deserves
I’m talking about the NCAA having its best players available for bowl games

compete with where they are going – to the NFL

    ————————————————–
They are to some extent. Having played the game, if i had a teammate that bailed on me when we were in the playoffs, sure id be mad, id be mad that i was pouring myself into the game and risking things when he wasnt willing to stand by me and do the same. Its part of that weight it out thing i think the players need to do. It one of the consequences to that action. Still if they are willing to do it, i dont think it says anything different about them that can be said about just about every player on the field already in the NFL.

Think about all those 3 year dud’s but 4th year studs. Contract year explosions of talent. You see it in the guys who leave their team because of small contract language differences, or a couple hundred K off in money. You see it in the guys who just quit on their teams when they dont get enough passes thrown their way. Its a business and they see it as protecting their equity, getting theirs, or at least giving what they get and not a bit more. There are probably tons of scratches from games because the player didn’t want to push himself. A bunch of player who want a new contract right after signing their last one. Lots of players who talk endlessly about show me the money and ill show you the stats. Is this the right attitude to have, no i hate it too, i wis to have players who play like Landry, or Ajayi, or Wake. Unfortunately though Mike, these guys are rare and most just treat it like a job, and they are just shooting for the best pay they can get to do that job.

TBH, i dont like the attitude as a fan, i want a guy who plays because he loves it, but from their prospective i dont really blame them a ton. The sport is a rough one, they have very little time to get in and get paid before they are forced out. Football even with the salaries we all just go WTF over, is a relatively underpaid sport by the scale of other pro sports. Soccer salaries are friggin unreal, fully guaranteed and players can play decently long careers. Basketball, fully guaranteed contracts, well above NFL contracts and again, generally can play that game longer than NFL players can. Baseball people can play into their 40’s at a competative level, HUGE fully guaranteed contracts.

In some ways i think the NFL has forced them to be greedy by no adoption of a better model for paying the players. Football grosses more money than almost any other sport, yet plays its players significantly less, with less guarantees they will get that money, than any other sport. So you dont have to be a genius to see, someone is getting paid. To make it more applicable it would be working a coal mine. Owner of the mine doesn’t have any fear of developing black lung or getting caught in a cave in, but he is making millions while his workers make minimum wage. I know its hard to see a guy making millions as a minimum wage worker, but when your boss is making hundreds of millions, the scale starts to seem appropriate. Just like with the analogy, this is a sport people kill themselves playing, bodies destroyed, mushy brains, etc. We may see these numbers as way more than any person deserves playing a sport, but you have to compare them to other professional sports. In the context of that, i agree with them, they are grossly underpaid, and due a lot more than is given to them.

  92. D says:

Moore is what i thought he would be, hard to prepare for. Our file all year has shown as one type of team and with him in there we are a different one. We stlll rely on the same “everyone has to do their part” thing, we still need balance to our offense, we still need the defense to step up and help us out, but Moore’s passing style and way he reads the defense has a completely different feel than with Tanny in there, which has to be making it tougher to prepare for us right now.

He looked pretty comfortable out there too so im feeling good about next game. Its still in Buffalo which always sucks for us, but i think if Gase can keep us centered, keep the young guys from losing their minds right now. We have a solid change to win the next one. Would be nice because it would officially eliminate the Bills and should almost assuredly wrap up a playoff birth.
