Game Day – Dolphins @ Steelers – Wild Card Round

I haven’t read the stats
But I thought our receivers played well
I don’t remember any drops
I think a couple of things jump out to me
The Antonio Bryant early TDs and the inability to tackle him
And the Matt Moore fumbles while we were driving
We did a lot of things poorly
We took really poor angles for most of the day. Landry and Stills played well, Parker decent, but it’s easier to put up good receiving stats when you are down 20 sixteen minutes into the game.
We
Didn’t run the ball very well in the 1st half or all game
I don’t fault the receivers for that
I really don’t think Moore was completely right after that hit which was fucking brutal. Still not sure how Dupree didn’t get a warning on that one.
He jumped right back in but he seemed different after. I don’t know if he was playing while hearing footsteps or what but he was definitely not in sync.
I seriously dont see the gripe about his play.
D,
Miraculously, he seemed fine after the hit to me. He just made poor decisions with the ball. You have to protect the ball, simple as that.
Yeah I agree and the fumble right before half was really damaging considering we could have gone in just down by 1, but you had nothing going on offense, we got brutalized again in the middle of the field, I don’t see the fumbles as anything other than another part of the pile that amounted to our loss.
Again, these arguments were made for Tanny’s sake when he was doing it every game, why now is Matt Moore the scapegoat, for the same thing.
That was the game. If we had scored a TD there I think it would have been a much closer game.
Bad ending to a nice year!
Last time Dolphins had 22nd pick, they traded it to Baltimore in 1971 for the rights of Coach Don Shula. Here’s to hoping this #22 is a great pick too!

#Dolphins land No. 22 overall draft pick after playoff exit http://es.pn/2jkS62v “-It’s time to start thinking draft and offseason.
Now that that is set lets hope one of the 2 top LB’s are still there!
We may have to trade-up to get one!!!!
Not my favorite!
I want us to sign De Castro in FA.
That would be a smart move
A solid OG
From the Saints SB Nation Blog:
http://www.canalstreetchronicles.com/2016/10/31/13475036/new-orleans-saints-who-should-be-traded-by-deadline
This is from October of last year but a lot of people were not happy with Stephone Anthony and, IMO, they’re idiots but if the Saints want to unload him just like they did with Kenny Stills I think we should be 1st in line.
They also wanted to trade Mark Ingram
One play that showed Gase’s (or maybe Rizzi’s) smarts yesterday was the fake punt. I thought they were going to go for it on 4th and one, but there came the punt team. Guess they figured if they could’t run it against the Steelers’ D lets try against their special teams.
And they trotted out fast and did the play fast….caught the other side worried about setting up instead of what might come.
I thought they might challenge Ajayi’s spot. They gave him a pretty bad spot, he reached the ball out there, and was maybe a 6-12″ short of the 1st down, as opposed to the yard plus spot they gave him.
Look, you guys dont need to wig out about LB prospects. We have several to choose from and we could even get away without selecting one in the first and still get a starter that is an upgrade in the 2nd. Dont get so tunnel visioned about certain people, there are a LOT of really good talent there right now. Truthfully i wouldnt even worry about who we should target until the DC situation settles. We need to know who will be calling the plays to know who we should target and whether or not a top prospect will be available.
DE is a pretty deep draft too, CB is fairly deep, S is average, TE is deep, OL, specifically OC/OG’s is deeper than normal but IMO, the worry for me would be getting one of the top guys that could backup Pouncey or be our new OC if need be, but definsatly upgrade us at OG. I only really see 3 of those guys in the draft that would be capable of giving us that upgrade and depth on the OL. So IMO, yeah we need to go DE or LB early, but we need to sammich one of those guys in between. Pocic, Elflein, Mason Cole, and maybe John Toth. Its possible one of those falls to the third which would be best for us, so we could go DE/LB, LB/DE, OC/OG. If we got a really good CB or S prospect fall to us, id probably squeeze them in in between one of those picks as well, and with LB and DE there will be some latitude for it.
Keep in mind those were guys rumored that they wanted to trade, there MAY have been truth to it but there may have not been. I dont see them trying to trade Ingram since they planned the whole time to feature him, and i somewhat doubt the Anthony thing, but its more liekly to me that they might have cashed in IF they got really good compensation. We arent talking about a 3rd round pick either. They arent trying to get less of a return on investment, ust like with Stills, they want to get something good for him, and given he is a former 1st, i promise you its not going to be a conditional 3rd they take in return.
I think, though, if my prediction for coaching changes pans out, it might be likely. IF VJ goes to another team, which seems somewhat likely, AND we promote Burkes to DC as a replacement. I think its possible we hire Joe Vitt, the LB coach and former assistant HC as a replacement or Burkes. This keeps continuity on our team as far as defensive scheme/strategy, this brings in a coach who is well respected and has held a position with the saints for past 10 years, so he has years of experience developing players (keep in mind the LB of the Saints have generally been the strong spot of that defense). Being he is Gase’s father in law, he will know him and should integrate well with the staff, so another plus for the potential of that move.
Finally, having coached Anthony, and knowing the status of that situation with him, its possible we might have a better idea of what we could negotiate as a possible exchange that the Saints would accept for the trade. If the pieces start falling that way, it makes the trade for Anthony a much more likely scenario.
I still prefer drafting a guy, developing him ourselves, but if we do hire Vitt, then essentially we have done that by transferring the player with the coach who has developed him.
Better than Decastro, Kevin Zeitler from Cincy, he is a better rated OG and he fits our system better.
I just saw decastro is not even an FA anyway 😦

I dont know how flexible they are as far as being able to play OG, but both Arizona and GB have their OC’s coming up as FA’s. GB, is unlikely to be able to FT their OC because they have Lang, their OG, who is a really good OG also on FA and likely would use it on him instead, or maybe Eddie Lacy.

2017 FA
Sign or Walk?
Jordan Cameron TE 28 WALK! — No brainer.
Dion Jordan DE 26 —– Not a FA this year.
Andre Branch DE 27 SIGN —- same, id offer him rotational starter money, with expectation we will be rotating a rookie or other FA with him.
Jermon Bushrod G 32 WHATEVER —- Sign, offering a backup level contract, and letting him know that was our intentions.
John Denney LS 38 CAN ANYONE ELSE DO IT? — Sign, but again, at a team friendly amount, LS, can be found almost any year, and eventually we have to cross that bridge.
Spencer Paysinger OLB 28 SIGN CHEEP— Sign, pay him according to being a backup and ST ace.
Donald Butler ILB 28 SIGN CHEEP — Not impressed, id let him walk unless it was just a really good deal.
T.J. Yates QB 29 WALK — Dont think there was ever any intentions of re-signing, might offer him a “we can back out of this at any time” contract and bring him to camp.
Michael Thomas FS 27 SIGN CHEEP — Sign, again, the contract offered reflects the intentions, backup/St ace kind of contract.
Dominique Jones TE 29 SIGNED ALREADY? —- Not signed, and i would only re-sign if we dont get another FA signing.
Bacarri Rambo SS 26 WALK YOU NO TACKLING MF! — Sign, he has been solid up until this last game and he made one mistake on one play. He’s a backup level player regardless, but he would be a really solid depth guy, offer him a contract accordingly.
Jelani Jenkins OLB 24 SIGN DESCENT — Id probably re-sign him as well, though he missed his chane at a good contract from us. Id make him a team friendly deal, maybe even a show me one-year kinda thing.
Dion Sims TE 25 SIGN!!! — Sign, but i wouldnt pay him as a true starter. He would get a decent offer, but there are other options in FA and draft that could improve upon him. In the neighborhood of a feature TE, but i wouldnt tie so much up with him that we couldnt get a true feature TE, like Bennett.
Kenny Stills WR 24 SIGN!!!! — Sign, and id make it a pretty good offer, we have to be modest to some extent because we have to prepare to pay Landry next year, and id rather be able to do that even if we lose Stills.

You forgot Alonzo and Williams, Alonzo being a former 1st rounder probably wouldnt get poached because a team would have to give up a 1st to take him. Williams however being an UDFA, We would have to play a higher level tender on him to keep him from being poached, and would be guaranteeing him that amount next year if no one makes and offer, and he signs the tender. If he doesnt then he would become and UDFA.
Sorry an URFA
Wyoming, ERFA stands for exclusive rights free agent. Its when a team has exclusive rights to make an offer, however if a new contract hasnt been agreed upon by time the deadline for ERFA ends, they become URFA.
What we can do with Alonzo is let him ride out until he is made an offer and then make the decision to Match, if we dont match, we get a 1st rounder as compensation, if we do we can get him at whatever his FA value was, without trying to negotiate that ourselves. I probably let him walk if he is offered, id rather have a 1st round in compensation personally.
For Williams we need to place a 2nd round tender on him, which going off of last years RFA amounts would be same as offering him a 2.5mil 1 year offer, fully guaranteed. Since this is a second level tender, we would get in compensation, a second rounder IF he gets another offer and we do not match. Id take a 2nd round in compensation at the cost of a 2.5mil 1 year contract fully guaranteed contract if he signs it.
URFA is how Will Smith says “Earth”
Draft talk. 😢
Free Agent talk! 🙂
Whatever.
No way around that now that we are out…..’tis the time of the season. And I don;t have much to offer other than “we need this and that.”
Except for a few names……maybe we can trade for Clay Mathews. 🙂
D
I thought Alonso is a RFA. All we have to do is give him the highest tender, and if anyone wants to sign him for a higher contract, we get their 1st RD pick
I really think our defense this year was the worst one I’ve ever seen in Miami. Historically bad.
Least if the guys on the local TV were right…..we set a record for yards allowed for a season.
I would be willing to give the Saints a 2nd in ’18 and a 5th in ’17 for Anthony.
How much do you think Eric Berry will cost?

wow … just wow
I’d like for us to not get crazy with blowing cash on free agents. Get value where we can and continue and try to build through the draft.
I agree, save the money for Stills and Landry, but if we don’t improve our LB play, get more pass rush, and develop a legit starter at OG who can play C, then we will not improve on 10-6 and maybe slide backward because of our more rigorous schedule next year.

NFL has initiated a review of application of concussion protocol following hit by Bud Dupree on Matt Moore. Plenty to explore.
Kenny Stills, Jermon Bushrod among Dolphins free agents hoping to return
“I want to be back here,” receiver Kenny Stills said. “I love this team. I love these guys. We did something special, just starting 1-4. So we’re going to do whatever we can to try to make it happen.”
“That’s my plan [to return]. I’m not interested in moving anymore,” Bushrod said. “I enjoy it here. My wife enjoys it here in South Florida. But free agency is wild. We will see what the future holds.”
Branch’s price tag could go up this offseason compared to last year.
“I love this place,” Branch said. “They believed in me when not too many people did. I appreciate them for that. But we will see how it goes.”

Least that is a whole lot of different this year around. In past years it would be “would like to stay but …you know how this business works.”
It is nice to hear!

Here is a question HE is going to have to answer next season and I HOPE the answer is YES.
Was Leonte Carroo worth a 3rd and a 4th round pick? As of today F NO! That is another reason I really REALLY don’t like Tannenbum. He likes to play too much during the draft.
We currently have 1st, 2nd, 5th, 6th & 7th round picks.
We anticipate getting a late 3rd for Vernon and a 5th for Miller and MAYBE a 5th for Mathews, if anything.
So we will not have a 4th round pick this year. (as it stands, but with our VP’s addiction to trades I expect him to move up and get a 4th somehow)
we should be getting a 4th for Miller.
Yeah we should get a 4th for miller, 3rd for Vernon and probably a 5 or 6th for Matthews.

————————————
Mike, i said he was a RFA in an earlier post, it may have gotten confused because i combined reply to Wyoming about ERFA, and a statement about Alonzo in same response. That is correct though he is a RFA, but because he was a first rounder, we can give him the lowest tender and still get a first round pick as compensation if someone makes an offer and we decline to match.
If you make the lowest tender on a player, then if someone makes an offer and you dont match, then you get in compensation the round pick equal to their draft value. A 6th rounder would then net you a 6th, etc etc. If you want more for them, you tender higher. The highest tender amount nets a first for any player, the second highest amount nets a 2nd round pick, the lowest amount as i siad yield their draft value. Because Williams is a UDFA, if we want to get anything for him we have to tender something other than the lowest amount or it wont do any good.
Right now fanspeak is giving us a 3rd for Vernon, and a 5th for both Miller and Matthews. I think Miller will be a 4th.
The team believes they will get a 3rd, 4th and 7th. I hope they’re at least close to recoup some of the traded picks. But I think the key is what we do in the 1st and 2nd rd. We need those players to make immediate impacts. We have a lot of young players already filling out depth charts. We need to add some impact guys. If we added two impact defensive players from FA and two in the draft our defense could totally be revamped and much better that quickly.
Then we have to see what’s on Jones’ mind as far as his contract goes. Kind of hard to ask for a new big deal after missing most of the season and the team winning without you.

Its ok, its sex with Omar so it doesn’t require much concentration, effort, nor does it interferre with correct spelling and/or grammar.
I wouldn’t mind up paying a little in FA witht he cap space we will have, most of which will not roll over anyways. We just need to spend smart, and either really solve the depth issue by getting several solid 2nd tier dudes who can do that or addressing holes like LB, OL, maybe even pass rush (although im not a fan because thats the most costly place to address DE and CB). We can be players in FA without being stupid with it and getting ourselves in trouble.
Wyoming Joeckel and Warkmack are two previous 1st rounders who havent really dont a lot. Warmack is decent but he doesnt really fit our scheme. Eh would help us in power run formations, but anytime Gase wanted to shift and go zone or do some different blocking schemes he doesnt really have the mobility to manage that and he isnt the greatest pass blocker either. Id be interested at the right price, but i think he would definitely need some serious off-season conditioning to be able to run at our tempo.
Joeckel seems like a complete washout, Jags didn’t even pick up his 5th year option, and lost his job as the starting LT, and was forced to play OG, something he complained about having to do. Jags said they might entertain bringing him back as a OG to compete for a starting job but would not bring him back if he was insistent on playing OT. At one point i was wanting us to reach out to Jags for a possible change of scenery type trade, Jordan for Jeockel, but after what has gone on since i really dont wan that reclaimation project. I doubt he could beat out anyone on our team for the starting job.
Paztor is a decent candidate, i do think we could draft a guy equivalent to him though. He is still a young guy, and he is solid, and should be able to adapt to our scheme so id be ok with that signing.
IMO boulder should be forever banned from this site for using the words miko and sex in the same post………shit now i have to be banned toooooooo…..damn you boulder
That bothered you more than the Miko pussy juice post? Im still battling my mind from trying to punish me by creating a smell thought to go with that visual mental imagery,
Caroo trade was really head scratching to me. I like the player, his video out of Rutgers really showed he played with some fire and he had good hands. He could be Landry 2.0, he should be really hard to bring down, and if he cleans up some of how he makes his cuts in his route, just polishs up the route running he could be a stud. I know its easy to say “wasnt worth it” and i really dont know if ill ever feel it was worth it, but thats past now and we just have to hope he turns out like we, and the coaches expect him too.
D, I think you can find LBs and guards in FA at a decent price but I agree the top pass rushers and corners are very expensive. We have a lot of work to do at LB that’s for sure, many of them are FAs as well. So besides upgrades we have to secure bodies as well. I see that unit turning over pretty heavily.

New blog up for real this time
Tim, i think we will get a 6th at least for Matthews, but lets say you are right and its a seventh (not that the difference in a 6th and 7th would be that big a deal in grand scheme of things). Then that means we would have:
1P22 Derek Barnett DE Tenn
2P22 Ethan Pocic OC/OG LSU
(3P22 was traded in the Caroo trade)
3P35ish Kendell Beckwith ILB LSU
4P22 Cole Hikutini TE Lousiville
(4P35ish was traded in the Caroo trade)
5P22 Channing Stribling CB Michigan
6P22 Tyrus Bowser DE Houston
7P22 Weston Steelhammer S Air Force
7P35ish Eric Wilson LB Cincy
Wake and Barnett could rotate on LDE, with Barnett and flipping to RDE when Wake and they go to pure pass rush packages. RDE would be Branch and Fede, except when they rotate out and Barnett comes in. Bowser would develop at RDE, hopefully getting some rotational snaps in.
Pocic could play LG, if it looks like Albert may not be back, otherwise he could play RG and give us an upgrade at that position, and he could be backup/starting caliber insurance at OC for Pouncey. We retain Steen to back up at OG and OC. We keep Bushrod to back up at OG or OT. This gives an OL that not only is more solid at the top level, but also at the second level. This should also allow ofr any combination of injuries without losing continuity. Also if its the case we think we may transition away from Albert at LT and move Tunsil there, then i would also look to get a OG in FA, someone like Kevin Zeitler.
Beckwith comes in and gives us a true MLB, kick Alonzo out to WLB, if we get an LB in FA, someone like Collins or Kevin Minter, to man the SLB, we have a really solid LB corp, retaining Jelani to be a backup passing downs LB, would give us solid depth to go with players like Paysinger, and Hewitt who are also ST contributors.
Cole Hikutini would be a nice upgrade over Cameron as a receiving option, as well as a good compliment to Sims in double TE packages. He would be an instant plug into the offense to give Tanny another weapon.
Stribling could compete with Howard, Lippett and Maxwell for the 2 outside CB spots, 3rd man gets the slot, leaving the 4th to backup along with Bobby Mccain and Lucas.
Weston Steelhammer would be a backup safety prospect, of course but i think he would be better than the backups we have there. I think we would wind up keeping he, Isa, Jones, Thomas, Aikens mostly because of his ST play, and possibly Rambo if they decided to keep 6. If not i believe he would be good enough to make the team on the PS.
Obviously Wilson would be a long shot to make the team, but its possible he could make it as one of the backups, kicking Hull, Hewitt or Paysinger off the team, or himself going to the PS.
I think that would be address most the holes and at the very least id feel like this team would have a better chance to keep playing at a winning level with injuries, and likely be able to have the depth needed and potential studs to elevate our game play, and maybe have another year to test ourselves against the best in the playoffs.
Good stuff and not far off from what I’m thinking for our draft….kudos.
Reuben Foster with the sack!
