Coffee. I love coffee. Americans love coffee. Americans drink approximately 382 cups of coffee (8 oz). per year.  54% of American adults are regular coffee drinkers, and consume on average three 8 oz cups per day. Now that’s a lot of coffee my friends.

I used to drink my fair share of coffee, and it was always regular coffee, not decaffeinated. Not a coffee snob in the least when I first started drinking it, in fact, I was an uninformed coffee novice, I couldn’t tell the difference between a gourmet cup and a cup of mud, and I wasn’t interested in doing so either.

As I got older, probably in my early 40’s, the flavor of coffee started to really matter to me. “Brands” were beginning to emerge as elite coffees, and the best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup no longer applied. I can honestly say, there is nothing like the smell of good coffee brewing, nothing. If you’re a hardcore Stephen King fan, you know what the other 2 finest smells in the world are. If you’re not, you’re going to have to do a little research.

Many years ago, circa 1987, my wife (then my girlfriend) were out with a group of our best friends at an Italian restaurant in Bay Ridge Brooklyn called “The Pasta House’.  We had a pretty good dinner, some wine, some laughs, and then it came to dessert.  A few of us ordered dessert, most ordered coffee, and then a casual conversation about coffee ensued.  My best friend Scott started to say something about coffee, and was quickly intercepted by his wife.  Scott was firmly scolded because he had only been drinking coffee for a short time, definitely less than a month, so how could he possibly be allowed to talk about coffee with us seasoned veterans?  Still one of the funniest memories we share, because she was so serious that he was unqualified to even casually discuss coffee, but that’s the passion coffee brings out in people.

I can’t pinpoint exactly what year it was that I became a coffee aficionado (read SNOB), time gets fuzzy as you age, and so do the inside of your ears. I had tried many of the fancy brands by going into one of their establishments and ordering by the cup, which is bewildering in some of those stores. How is the “grande” not the largest size? Why is a “tall” not nearly the biggest? So you can see I’m talking about Starbucks, and I admittedly am in love with Starbucks coffee. Here’s the twist though. I don’t like the way they brew it. So I do it myself.

You can purchase Starbucks coffee in many different retail outlets. Big box stores sell it, like Target, and some of the membership clubs do too, like Sam’s, and maybe even Costco, though I’m not positive about that. Here’s the key though friends, you have to buy “whole bean” coffee. You just can’t purchase “ground” coffee, or you may as well go back to waking up with Folgers. You need to make some effort that you care about your coffee, and grind it fresh each morning you drink it. It is such a rewarding experience grinding your own coffee. We’re talking a good old fashioned drip coffee maker. Remember those? That brings me to this.

mr-coffee-drx5-4-cup-programmable-coffeemaker

What is happening with the way we we make our coffee? If you’re alive and it’s 2017, you either have one of those Keurig “pod” coffee makers in your home or office, or maybe both. I can’t tell you how much I despise these machines. If you really enjoy a good burger, one that was seasoned properly using a good quality meat, you can eat a whopper, and it may satiate you, but mostly, you feel cheated and empty. Same thing here. You get a minute if that of coffee aroma, and because you’re using ground coffee in a pod, the flavor just ain’t there.

index

Do yourself a favor. I’m aware that we’re all different. My favorite coffee for flavor, and aroma, is Starbucks House Blend. I’ve tried many different variations of their coffee, as well as other brands too,  and the only one I like almost as much is the Starbucks Breakfast Blend. Buy the whole bean, and hopefully you still have a proper drip coffee maker. My formula, or ratio of coffee to water is this . . . If you’re making 10 cups of coffee, 5 scoops of freshly ground whole bean coffee to 11 cups of water. 1 cup seems to always magically evaporate, and for me, that works perfectly. The aroma is just beautiful, it makes me very happy. If you like it stronger, either use more coffee or less water, and conversely, if it’s too strong, use more water or less coffee. Experiment. If you like coffee, it’s worth a shot. If you love coffee, it’s a must!

2f9cfc8c5edb680fe90133d4f18d92a9-500

Don’t blame me if one day you look at your silly little “pod” coffee machine with disdain, and maybe even kick it off the counter. Only negative to this is you may really start caring about the quality of your coffee. I’m aware that these silly “pod” machines are available with a reusable pod that can be filled with coffee of your choice. It’s not the same folks. It’s like buying a grilled swordfish plate at the best French restaurant, boxing it up, putting it in the refrigerator for a couple of days, and then heating it up in the microwave. NOT the same!

I do understand that in today’s lifestyle, time is of a premium, and that’s why the quick little “pod” machine is everyone’s best friend, but if/when you have time, savor your coffee, you won’t regret it! Find your favorite coffee and make it happen. Let me know what it is too, I’d like to try it as well.

TOTALLY AGREE WITH LOU. I’ve REALLY tried to like Starbuck’s coffee. But I’ve failed to find a

And it sure beats the hell out of the leftover coffee I was forced to drink in the Army at more than one of my duty assignments. And Mike, like you, we use an old fashioned brewer!

NOT to put down today’s topic BUT – – – Maybe all 17 installments of “Absolute Perfection” might be a good idea once a week this upcoming spring?? We ALL need to get in the proper mindset for a SUCCESSFUL playoff season for Miami this upcoming season, don’t we?? Anything less than at least ONE PLAYOFF VICTORY in the 2017 season will be a disappointment. SO LET’S GET READY TO SUCCEED!!

(just figured out was on the old blog)

I am hoping one of you draft experts will tell me that Jadar would be a good fit for the team. “Career mode on the Madden”….awesome.
    —————————
Jadar Johnson has been one of the most impressive draft prospects of the week, so it’s no surprise that scouts have made it a point to track the Clemson safety down. But Tuesday, Johnson was extra excited to speak with one club in particular.

“I’m a Miami Dolphins fan. I’ve been a Dolphins fan since I was a little boy, so when they came up to me, that was a big deal for me. It was like the career mode on the Madden (video game) where you can pick your team. I wanted to say, ‘C’mon man, please pick me. It would be perfect.’ I didn’t tell them I was a Dolphins fan — I wanted to keep it business-like. But I so wanted to tell them.”

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know much about him

I don’t think this guy is highly ranked by any scouts though

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well if we can grab him late…..even better. He sure just moved up my pathetic little draft board. Jadar is on my radar.

  15. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah I had to go to an “underrated” list to find him, but he is six foot 191 pounds (although might be a college listing) and reportedly runs a 40 in the 4.5 range.

    5. Jadar Johnson, S, Clemson

Has anyone checked if Clemson have developed cloning technology for their safeties? There is certainly a conveyor belt of talent emerging at the position for the Tigers. After Jayron Kearse and TJ Green were drafted early in April, Jadar Johnson looks likely to follow suit. The senior thrives at centre field, where he can use his range to make plays on the ball. On his 25 targets this year, Johnson has given up only 11 catches on 25 targets for 164 yards, one touchdown, three picks and three pass deflections (39.8 QB rating). With seven total picks the past three years, Johnson’s playmaking is sure to attract interest this offseason.

  16. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

Walter Football has him rated at #22 for safeties

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Great Blue North Draft has him at #17

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Even he has been showing it and may get an upgrade…….sounds like we can get him for a 7th and it is clear where he would want to sign as a UDFA. And heck — we could use a true center fielder, even if only as a possible nickle or dime and special teams.

  17. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m 100% for an upgrade at G, but would also like to keep Jermon Bushrod. He only cost $1.5 mil last year and even if we have to pony more than that it was his first year at G and he played LT before that. Could be a perfect swing back-up. Plus he came here cause Gase knew and liked him from his days with the Bears.

We need quality depth in case we struggle with Albert and Pouncey injuries

We need at least that 3rd rd comp pick so we have a 3rd. Then we have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd that hopefully impact the team, then we need to get more out of Carroo next season to make the deals we made this past draft worthy.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah we need more out of Carroo, but at the same time seeing what we might get in comp picks makes the trade make more sense. Was shocked we did it at the time, but am at least hoping the FO was already figuring what we would get next time around.

But then most people like hot dogs but don’t want to know how they are made. 🙂

  38. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’d look to upgrade at RG and keep Bushrod as a versatile backup because he could, potentially play both T and G positions. Look for a C/G guy who can start at G and possibly C if Pouncey’s injuries continue to be an issue. I think Bushrod’s best value is as a very versatile backup moving forward. I don’t hate keeping him as a starter, but he was a weak link last year.
    ***
It’ll be interesting to see what they do on the left side. Do they shift Tunsil to tackle this year and move Albert to guard? Do they leave it like last year? Do they even think Tunsil is ready to start at LT? If they slide Tunsil to tackle, I don’t see Albert being happy about moving inside to guard, so we may need a LG too. If that is the case….and he’s never wanted to play guard…then I would try to trade him.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      You can do that
I think at a minimum it makes sense to keep Bushrod back up or not

      Albert played OG at VA
I’m not sure he would be upset about it

But we can afford to play Albert at LT and Tunsil at LG for another season

I think picking up a C/OG via the draft is a good way to go
Maybe pickup an OG to play RG via Free agency

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I want us to keep rolling with our best starting 5 OL but add better depth and competition to the overall unit. When those guys are all in the lineup we usually win.
    LT Albert
    LG Tunsil
    C Pouncey
    RG Bushrod
    RT James

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think that’s pretty much the idea
But like a randy said I think you can possibly upgrade RG in free agency and use Bushrod for depth

And then maybe pick up a versatile C/OG via the draft

I would like to see a group given a chance to play together
But competition is preparation for injuries can’t hurt

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we bring someone and they beat someone else out that’s fine. Competition is always good.

  40. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I know folks are really focused on improving our defense, but we need our offense to improve by at least 3-4 points a game too. Averaging 22-23 points a game isn’t gonna get you anywhere in the playoffs unless you have a phenomenal defense.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. The team did score better after the 1-4 start sans a couple of games. They scored over 25 points in 8 of 11 games. Scored 30 or more 6 times overall. But defense and STs added some to that. I would like to see our offense take another step though and be more consistent.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I hate to say it

But to achieve that – you might have to give Mike what he wants
      That seam threat TE

      That is probably the piece

      Other Than that
Maybe work Drake in a little more to the offense
Bc he can break big plays

  41. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Piggy,
Albert has said repeatedly that he sees himself as a tackle and wants to play tackle. He does not want to go back inside to guard. Now, whether or not that is fluid with him getting a little older and injuries…I can’t say, but I think he’s been pretty clear over the past handful of years that he expects to play tackle. I’d prefer to keep him at LT and Tunsil at LG. I was just doing some “what if” thoughts.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      I’m sure he’s human
We all says things and change

I’m not pressing the issue and I don’t think the FO should

But he might be ready for a change bc he’s getting older
I think more Importantly on the issue is – we have a LT and a LG between Tunsil and Albert
So we don’t need to think about replacing one of them

  42. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
That’s kinda what I was suggesting. Bring in competition at the guard position and see what shakes out. Again, I don’t think it’s a must to move on from Bushrod, but I’d look to try to upgrade. Bushrod wasn’t a complete disaster, but he wasn’t very good either.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree and Bushrod himself said that not just moving to guard but to the right side was a big adjustment and it took him awhile to get comfortable, but it still doesn’t feel natural to him.

  43. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  44. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Absolutely. We need to get our defense to shave about 3-4 points off their game average too. If we could do both, I think we’d be a strong playoff contender.

  45. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  46. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I completely agree about bringing in competition at G, and like you’ve said, one that could also, and has played Center too. If Bushrod wins, we have a solid backup that could play any interior position.

  47. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I also think we should just leave Albert at LT and let him play when healthy. Tunsil will play G, and then shift to LT if Albert is hurt, and then our backup G/C will slide in. We just have to make sure we get an adequate G/C backup.

  48. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The main thing I want the team to do is to get a little better everywhere and not have any setbacks. Even if we don’t become dominant anywhere, just eliminate glaring weaknesses.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m curious to see how far we’re willing to go with Stills. The more Parker, Landry and Stills are on the field, the less you see of Carroo. I guess it depends on what they think of Carroo’s development and potential. Carroo can’t be Stills, but if he can be Anquan Boldin like, that wouldn’t be a bad thing either. Maybe Grant or Drake line up as WR’s more and become the deep threat.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Well I know Gase likes Stills’ skillet and Stills likes being on this team. I think there is a good chance we re-sign him. Also if the offense takes it to another level and can get the uptempo game going better they’re going to need a 4 man WR rotation.

  51. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    It’s just one mans opinion
But Watt is a great pass rusher
And he should be used primarily that way at the next level

Playing him as an 4-3 OLB kinda seems like a waste even if he is capable of that

And both Wisconsin OLB are kind of on the smaller side to play DE
But I wouldn’t rule it out

Biegel is an I tersting prospect
Probably overlooked as people get obsessed with Watt
He dropped in coverage more than Watt
But that still wasn’t too much

      Houston Oilers[edit]
In 1987 Bush was hired by the Oilers to be their college scout and he remained at the position until 1992 when he was promoted to linebackers coach. He served as the teams linebackers coach until 1994.

      Denver Broncos[edit]
From 1995 to 1999 Bush served as the Denver Broncos linebackers coach under Mike Shanahan and was a member of the teams back-to-back Super Bowl victories over the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII and Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl XXXIII. In 2000 he served as the secondary/nickel package coach and was the special teams coach from 2001 to 2003.

      Arizona Cardinals[edit]
From 2004 to 2006 Bush served as linebackers coach for the Arizona Cardinals under Dennis Green. Along with being the linebackers coach in 2006 he was also the assistant head coach to Green.

      Houston Texans[edit]
From 2007 to 2008 Bush served as the Houston Texans senior defensive assistant under head coach Gary Kubiak. Before the 2009 season Bush was promoted to defensive coordinator. He was fired by the Texans after the 2010 season after the Texans finished third-to-last in the NFL in total defense.[2]

Welcome Frank Bush. The guy definitely has a lot of experience.

It’s a shame this happened to him as a player.
“Bush was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the fifth round of the 1985 NFL Draft. As a rookie in 1985 he started 11 of 16 games recording three sacks. During his second season in 1986 he started the first three games of the season when an examination following an injury, revealed that he had a narrow spinal canal. This condition, not caused by play, made it too risky for him to continue playing.”

I started drinking coffee when I was probably about 8-10 years old. I remember it was the Jewish holidays, we were at my grandmothers house, and we had coffee with dessert, and I asked my mom if I could try it. I put milk and sugar in it (She told me to) , and I liked it. As I’ve gotten older, I like coffee black, or with just a drop of milk, and only one sugar. I can’t have the caffeine any more, so I mostly drink it Sunday morning, and if we’re out somewhere, I may have coffee if everyone else is, but otherwise I avoid it. Decaf doesn’t cut it, I haven’t found one that tastes as good as caffeinated.

  76. With Garrett named coach of the year it sheds a lot of light on why these people write about the game instead of being involved with the game on a league level.

  77. Watt only has one year of production in college to look at and he’s extremely raw. I can’t believe anyone would stick him in the first rd when he’s not even a 2nd rd pick.
This is why there’s so many teams with losing records and why so many of those teams are the same one’s all the time because they buy the hype someone else is selling.
There’s no doubt Watt is a heck of an athlete on the field but he needs one more year of solid college production before going on to the next level.
He’s a 3-4 pass rushing OLB, a pass rush specialist, at best right now and that’s about it. I wouldn’t put him in there on first and 2nd against the run because that’s not his forte and he struggled big time against blockers whether they be o-linemen or tight ends.
    PASS.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, Mychal Rivera doesn’t excite me. He’s not the kind of TE I’d be looking for. I want a tall guy with vertical separation ability. Rivera is more of a H-back/slot short and medium range guy like I expect Duarte to be.

    • Don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying he’s the be all and end all for the TE position but you take what you can get at this point. Rivera is a guy who will work very well in this offensive scheme and can add some yds and put up some points from the TE position.
Also, Duarte isn’t a true TE and he’s not there yet. I doubt Duarte see’s much of the field again this season.
Rivera isn’t coming with the high price tag either and you can do what the Pats do with him in that case. Get a year out of him if that’s all you need and throw him in the trash heap.
again, not saying he’s the answer at the TE position long-term but he fits the bill as a guy who can be productive in our offense and doesn’t come with the high price tag in FA.

    • Just to satisfy my curiosity, who’s the type you’d be looking for?

  83. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

    ohhh, Mychal Rivera???

I’m looking for some REALLY DIRTY HITS on Tom-Boy by the Steelers Sunday night in Foxboro.
Wouldn’t be surprised if a player or two got ejected from this game. But the REAL BATTLE in this game could be LeVeon Bell vs. the Cheats’ run defense. If Pittsburgh can’t run, they CAN’T WIN!!
But I believe Bell will have some success (100+ yards??) and that the Steelers do have a chance in this game..

Speaking of beverages, I went out and bought a 15-Pack of 16 ounce cans of Coor’s Light to celebrate the defeat of the Cheats! Will be the first time I’ve been legally drunk since the Fins won Super Bowl VII!! And don’t worry! I won’t drink all 15 in one sitting!!

  85. here’s the list of this year’s FA TE’s. Tell me who you want:

  86. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

LOU; DID YOU just ask Tim what kind of TE he’s looking for?? Christ, Lou, Tim already said
    “Mychal Rivera doesn’t excite me!!”

  87. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We saw lil signs of production out of MarQueis Gray, he came in the NFL about the same time that Rivera did. I’d rather go for a lil better grade FA TE, none of them will break the bank.
And then continue to develop Gray & Duarte opposite Sims as well.
Then if a marquee TE like OJ Howard fell to us, I think you strongly consider him depending on where we stand at that point with DE & LB.

    • here’s the problem. we’ve GOT to go DE or LB in the first rd. We can’t pass up on either for a TE because their ain’t gonna be anyone there for us to take at #54.
If we really want a TE and Everrett is there in the 3rd or 4th we could target him but we CANNOT forgo picking defense and continue to go thru the season with the talent we’ve got on that side of the ball.
At least on the offensive line we know, if we stay healthy, we could make it thru a season. NOT the case at LB.
again, Rivera is another player our coaching staff can get more out of than his previous coaching staff could.

  88. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, I have no idea what Duarte will be this year. But the team asked him to get bigger and stronger and pretty much put him on the shelf as a redshirt rookie. He does have some decent speed and agility.

I want to re-sign Sims as the prototype TE, Gray is a hard worker and sleeper type, mentioned Duarte already, we need some height and vertical speed. Basically Cameron but not him. Unfortunately!

  89. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

BTW Lou, just what are you smoking in your Mychal pipe?

My brother drinks between 12-15 cups of coffee a day. I used to drink 8-10 but now I am down to about 3 a day

  91. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lou, we don’t have to do anything in the draft besides draft a DE and LB at some point. FA is going to be a big part of what we do in the draft and when. I would not be surprised if we shook our defense up a bit and signed a DE, DT and two LBs. I think then we look OL, TE at the top of the draft, then go defense again. It doesn’t work just one way. It’s about players, not how they were acquired.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Build through the draft not FA. I don’t want to spend big money on FA

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve said this over and over, FA does not always mean big money like a Suh. You could sign 4 guys at 4 years $25M who are better than some guys we have.

We don’t have to invest heavily at QB, RB, WR, DT and DB. We have to spend it somewhere though. Upgrade weaknesses or enhance areas of the team.

      • and I agree with that assessment especially now that we have a blueprint and we have a solid coaching staff in place. I think the emphasis is on the players who fit the team and will work to get us where we want to go.
one of the reason I put Rivera on the top of the list at TE in FA.
I think now that the entire organization can see what our coaching staff is capable of achieving with the talent they have we won’t be big players in FA like Dominick said; we will pick and choose the guys we want like Tim said.
We’re going after guys who fit first and foremost and that’s why we’re probably not going to see a Chance Warmack on the o-line or a Melvin Ingram at LB.
At most, we see maybe someone like Zeitler in FA and that’s it. Then, we get maybe one or two guys on the defensive side maybe at DT for depth and a LB who maybe has a shot at starting or is at least better depth than what we’ve already got.
But, when it comes to LB we’re going to draft at least one quality guy who can be a starter at that position for quite a few years. Guaranteed.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The best teams imo build through the draft and use FA to supplement the roster. The Patriots, Packers and Steelers all operate that way and we should be looking to do the same

      • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

We pretty much did last year, sans maybe Mario.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not suggesting to go bonkers in FA with big spending. But players are players. Just acquire better ones. Use what’s available to upgrade your team.

  92. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Tim, right….I’d look at adding a DE like Datone Jones & resigning Branch after dropping Pooper Mario. Then also look for one in the draft if it falls right.

I’d go bigger money in FA @ OG/C and @ LB….then look there in the draft as well. Gives us flexibility….IMO.

On my ride home from work, NFL radio host Mark Dominik (Former TB GM) was asked by a Dolphins fan who called in what he thought Miami might do at LB in FA, and then in the draft. Dominik said he doesn’t expect the Dolphins to be players in FA, that they will draft their LB’s, young and speedy LB’s. I know this would make you happy, not that it’s the final word from someone in the Dolphins organization, but he does share the same philosophy you do
