The Wedge Scouting Report: Forrest Lamp

I love the feeling of riding on the back of a bullsaurus plowing through a foreign planet’s lifeforms.

They don’t stop for anyone and whatever is in front of ’em is flattened

WedgeonBullsaurus

Kind of reminds me of an NFL lineman plowing through a defensive line!

I’m not overly impressed with the linemen in this year’s draft but…

I love Lamp

Lamp5

Forrest Lamp

at 6’4, 310 pounds Lamp is the biggest prospect I’ve covered this offseason

The Western Kentucky standout is considered by many to be the top Guard in the draft.

Of course, Lamp didn’t play guard at Western Kentucky, he played tackl – 51 games at tackle in 4 years actually.

Lamp7

But most scouts project Lamp to play guard in the NFL.

Actually more often than not, scouts compare Lamp to one of the best guards int he NFL – Zach Martin.

I wonder if Lamp can do for the Dolphins OL what Martin does for the Cowboys OL?

Wouldn’t that be something?  Ajayi rushing for 200 yards each week!

If the Dolphins take Lamp with the 22nd pick – then you can expect a powerful ground game each week.

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at North Texas

Not impressed with the Hilltoppers?

Sure its a small school and that doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL

Well Western Kentucky has scheduled some tough out of conference teams including Alabama and LSU the last couple of years – so Lamp has faced top  college talent.

Lamp2

Lamp is good in pass protection.  He has quick feet and balance.

But what really stands out about Lamp is hi nastiness.  Lamp is going to plow through guys in the NFL when teams runs the ball.

Lamp should go early int he draft.  Mid to late first, maybe early 2nd round.  So the Dolphins probably will only get one chance at 22 to take him.

If you love Lamp like me you want to spend another first rounder on offensive line.

If I were to compare Lamp to an Alien weapon of Destruction I would compare him to the Powerful BullSaurus

TIM: As far as “Nothing ever gets solved here,” I’d have to say this. A few years ago, I perceived a general lack of full appreciation for the Dolphins’ unbelievable 32-2 run in 1072 and 1973. I attempted to solve that in some small way. Yes, the attempt WAS a bit flawed in some spots (as is my memory). But I’d have to say that those who read all 34 installments now have a greater appreciation of the most incredible two year run in NFL history in 1972 & ’73.

  26. D's avatar D says:

Technically Omar and Armando were both right. Extension is for 3 years but total contract is a 4 year because it includes this year as part of it, but is just extended the number of years.

So boils down to about 7 mil a year, 2 years fully guaranteed, with the third being the first real “out” year if things don’t work out. I think it’s a pretty solid contract considering MLB really jumped up in average cost per year recently.

Shows Kiko wants to be here and we want him here. Id definitely say the idea we sign Brown now is low, unless he wants a short term moderately priced contract. Misi I think is here until we either secure another starting caliber vet or draft a guy who can start. Basically an insurance policy at this point.

  27. D's avatar D says:

Incidentally if brown was to be signed for 7 one year. We could easily still do that. What we save from Misi and the difference in what we were going to pay Alonzo vs what we probably will pay him (have to see how the contract is busted up) will still put us in position to get Brown if he isn’t asking the world for his services. Wouldn’t count it out but still say it’s a low chance overall.

  28. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Obviously a lot of our FA money has gone to signing our own, including those we didn’t even need to sign now like Reshad and Kiko. For me just another way we are becoming a place players will want to come.

South FL and no state income tax we always had. Gase (with his new culture) and making the playoffs we added last season. Now we are becoming the team that takes care of it’s own if you play well and have a good attitude. And if we keep it up, FAs will be coming to a team filled with guys just like that….even if just for one year where they figure if it works they have a home (like Kiko and Branch now have).

Yeah I know. That’s why he’s been asked to take a pay cut two years in a row and he’s accepted it. He probably likes it in Miami and likes this team, he’s 30 and may not want to go anywhere else at this point. He’ll likely be a base SOLB and come off the field on passing downs. He can also serve as an edge rusher at times. He’s not a sack finisher but he can create pressure.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

They’ll probably look to draft a SOLB to play in the regular D who can kick down as a pass rush specialist in Sub packages. You could see that w/ guys like Reddick, Watt, Carraway, Phillips.

    BLAH!

  41. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A lot of running yardage against us was also by QBs. We have to do a better job keeping them in the pocket.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

That and LBs need to hit the right hole & fight through OL rather than trying to sprint around them creating gaping lanes. Butler, Jenkins, & Alonso (on occasion) did this which gave up huge chunk yards.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah we were very inconsistent in run defense. We’d bottle teams up like we were impossible to run against. Then we’d do what you said, miss a tackle or two and give up a 35 yard run that should have never happened. A few QBs hit us for big gains, a couple of reverses hurt us. Obviously we need to get better and hopefully some new personnel will help, but we need to play with more discipline.

  42. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Did those 64 snaps span Misi’s entire career? lol

  43. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All I saw on Misi above was that he has $1.5 mil guaranteed. Given what he had on the books, that would be like a “get healthy and we like you” contract. If that is it other than incentives……sounds like we are still wide open for a LB in FA or the draft.

  44. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t care what coaches like Misi, or don’t like Misi. Guy can’t stay on the field. He’s a better than average tackler, but that’s pretty much it.

  45. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m fine with Misi hanging around at a fair price, I just don’t want them to count on him, and it appears as if they aren’t.

  46. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I heard we offered brown 3-4 mill/year. I thought he was a better LB than timmons and we gave timmons 6. What up with that?

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

what do you mean? timmons is getting 6million/year for 2 years right?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You thought Brown was better, the team did not. 😉

Timmons is also here for leadership, coming from a winning culture and a hard nosed approach. Brown is not known to be any of those things but he’s talented and the better athlete. But that’s not all it’s about.

  47. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agents say what they say, but when one puts out after a pay cut about his guy — “If he’s healthy” and being “medically cleared”?………sounds like they are taking a flyer chance. And nothing wrong with that.
    ——————-

In the wake of Koa Misi’s decision to restructure the final year of his contract, his agent said Wednesday that the Dolphins made clear they would like him to remain with the franchise.

“He’s in the Dolphins’ plans,” agent Kenny Zuckerman said. “If he’s healthy, he’ll be there. He will be medically cleared during the offseason.”…..

  48. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think some fans tend to keep forgetting about a LB named Neville Hewitt. He earned his way on the game day roster as a rookie UDFA in 2015 playing STs and filling in at LB here and there. Last year he started 5 games, played LB in most games at times and finished with 60 tackles or so. He’ll be entering his 3rd season. Maybe he can and we should hope, he can take his game to another level. It’s not like he’s undersized or slow. He’s a good athlete. I think it’s all about how much can he improve being a student of the game.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim LOVES him some Neville. Think he knows you’re his biggest fan?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, I don’t know why he’s ignored. People always think everything in the draft in any round is always better and it’s not. If some LBs knock him down on the depth chart great, that means we got better. But as of right now he’s very much in the mix.

  49. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think Brown is better than Timmons
I think he is younger and a better athlete
    but not better IMO

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Agreed.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The PFF score is better. Brown is 17th best lb timmons was 70th. Maybe its more because timmons is coming for the steelers and that culture.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Brown basically had the best year of his career
        and Timmons is declining

but players have ups and downs

So does Brown pick up where he left off for the rest of his career or not?
        We really don’t know

        Timmons has always been consistent
        he’s just getting up there

I don’t think Brown overall is better than Timmons
But its almost like comparing apples and oranges bc of where they are in their careers

I think with Timmons you know what you are buying
but Brown could be better…or worse…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You always have to wonder how much separation is there in these rankings because someone always has to go first etc., and also who’s doing these rankings? Every team has scouting departments and pro scouts. PFF is a business that to me is no different than mocksters, just that they do it based on pro performance in their eyes.

I don’t mind PFF for stats like pressures, comp. pct. against in coverage etc., those are stats. But this group also decides whether or not a guy made the play or didn’t based on very different variables – like different opponents, game situations, what was the play call on a particular play and did it break down etc. I don’t think they always know what was going on. It’s a bunch of football geeks acting like pro scouts and giving grades.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

I guess Hewitt is in the mix, but the fact that we’re still looking at LB’s makes me think he’s far being considered a viable option as a starter, but more as a depth guy. You’d think they would have seen enough of him to know whether they liked him as a starter, no?

  51. D's avatar D says:

Problem with PFF and its scoring system is there is no way at all to make a true comparison score evaluation so there is really no way to have a ranking system. These players aren’t playing against the same teams, these teams aren’t all scheming themselves the same way, there are just too many variables to a players performance to truly have a ranking system based off what they claim to be basing it off of.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      ^

That’s why I turned away from them years ago. It’s not just apples and oranges, it’s pears, and raspberries, and lambs, and sloths, and carp, and anchovies, and orangutans, and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats, and large chu… LOL

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There is a way of doing an accurate ranking, but you’d need it to come from the teams, because they know the assignments and whose responsibility it is on each play. Hard to get anyone to be honest though. The players themselves know also.

  52. D's avatar D says:

Hewitt from what i saw last year is about what you can expect from a player in his position as both a middling level talent player, who is having to work his way into playing time. He made some mistakes that looked like experience mistakes, he made some good plays that showed he has some talent and potential, he wasnt consistent, but neither has been his playing time, so UDFA,in third year and only a handful of snaps before last year, and last year kinda of asking to step up, yeah what we saw wasnt pretty but it wasn’t supposed to be lol.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think we also are already assuming we will draft a better player, but we really dont know this is how the draft will pan out for us. We also are assuming even if we do draft a guy he will beat Hewitt out, thats just not something you can assume. Sure you would hope if we do get a guy early that he would be able to beat Hewitt out, but the years in the NFL adjusting to speed of the game, the play time and scheme exposure and play calls, etc. Those are all real deal advantages Hewitt has over any rookie, despite their talent. We could do a lot worse than Hewitt but i am hoping to get a little better out of the position, i dont think he will ever be a top level contributor, but as a depth player, and ST contributor i really think there is value having him around.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Then there is that possibility of holy shit this guy is good. 🙂

      • D's avatar D says:

Well the things i dont like about his game right now are all experience based thing, so yeah there is still a chance for that. It should really be able to be told if he makes a giant leap forward this year because he got some decent play time last year and he was working through some of those screw ups. Guess we will see how it goes this year. Especially if we do draft a guy high and we do still go with Hewitt after TC, then he obviously made a good step forward.

  67. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob Rang from CBS Sports has us taking Tim Williams. That might be one of the most underwhelming and disappointing picks we could make. He’s an undersized DE. He’d probably be better as a 3-4 OLB. There will be better fits for us at #22 for sure.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He’s a heck of a player

When the talent is there I have a hard time putting to much emphasis on size and fit (3-4)

If we draft him in playing him at DE

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I would almost be willing to bet he doesn’t get taken in the 1st RD. We might be able to get him in the 2nd RD

  68. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Mike

    His stock has dropped lately
CBS has him as the 38th best prospect
they used to have him top 20

I don’t know why he has dropped
but personally I like him better than Taco or Harris who are considered better fits

  69. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I like the idea of drafting pass rushers
but in terms of bang for your buck
guys like Willis, Walker, Smoot, Wise & Tanoh may be available in the 3rd round (or later)

Zach Cunnigham is still my #1 target unless Foster is available of course

I’d take Reddick over Cunningham in a second. Temple Tough baby!

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Most/many have Reddick higher ranked than Cunningham

        but I don’t

albeit he dropped back in coverage at Temple – he was mostly a DE for them
        I like Reddick
        not poopooing the player

I just think Cunningham is more of a pure LB and will have an instant impact

If we’re taking an edge rusher in the 1st, I want that dude playing every down though. I guess if he can switch from end (hand in the ground) to LB (standing up), that’s fine, but I want him to be effective at both.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s okay if they’re in a rotation. Most teams rotate their fronts to keep them fresh. Gase is a big believer in TOP and that’s an area he wants his offense to improve in. To control the game on offense and to keep the defense fresh.

There are quite a few pass rushers in this draft and some will fall to the 3rd for various reasons, but a lot of the highly rated ones are going to go quick. I can’t see us passing on one at #22 if the value is there. In fact it wouldn’t shock me if we trade up for one.

  80. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

On HC Adam Gase- “He’s the type of coach you want to win.”

On his expectations moving forward- “I’m my biggest critic. I’m working just like I’m a rookie. I don’t want to let any of my teammates down.”

On Jordan Phillips- “He’s working with [Ndamukong] Suh in Portland. You’ll see a totally different guy.”

Besides Branch being a solid player, I thought he played with great effort last year, he’s a high character guy and that was also one of the reasons I wanted us to re-sign him and he obviously wants to be in Miami.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I heard that Phillips was working with Suh but thanks for this it really seems to confirm it. Phillips has the ability to be a dominant player.

You should share when you hear stuff like that. Was interesting news to me, but then don’t check out the local papers either cause of the page hit limit based on my zipcode. But regardless, if Suh is getting Phillips out to Portland that is as under his wing as you can get. And even if not a fan of OTAs….Suh is about as fit a big guy as there is.

  82. D's avatar D says:

    Sad news about Sib.

As for Tim Williams, i think he will be lights out, but as a 3-4 pass rush specialist LB. I really dont like him as a DE, in fact, with some of the other interest and moves we have made, if they were to take Tim Williams i would really be thinking a switch to 3-4, maybe not this year but next. There are a lot of reasons we might want to make that change. 1) its a better defense against NE in particular, its also a better defense against mobile QB’s and RB that like to bounce it outside. We do have personnel on the line that could make the transition, we also have LBs now that could make the transition. We would have to add a couple more LB’s this draft if we were pushing to do it this year, but its doable. We also have a DC now who comes from a 3-4, and his 3-4 LB’s were the strength of the team. Both Joseph and Burke both mentioned they might would prefer the 3-4, IF they had the personnel for it but they didn’t feel like it last year.

I think this draft will tell us a good bit about the direction of the team and the way some of the previous things they couldn’t do on offense or defense might unfold.

    • D's avatar D says:

lost my train of thought i guess that was supposed to read 1) its a better defense against NE in particular, 2) its also a better defense against mobile QB’s and RB that like to bounce it outside, which accounts for 4 of our games and 4 against rivals from our same division.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All very possible. The new trend is to be able to be a hybrid and play both for different opponents. Piggy often says this and I agree, add the best players you can and scheme around them. You can play a 3-4 and have the “right” personnel, but if they’re not that good it really doesn’t matter what system you play. It’s still a game about talent and playmakers. If you were a 4-3 team and Lawrence Taylor is available you’re still taking him.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, it came from what makes me laugh. LOL

Watching Chris Berman being a woman would be funny to me.

    LMAO!!!

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, what I heard about Phillips working out with Suh was a simple comment with no depth so until it became bigger news I didn’t post it. Another playing knowing that’s the case is good intel.

Agreed on Suh being as fit as a big guy can be. He’s just different than most other players. I remember seeing that in him in college. He was throwing guys all over the field.

    • D's avatar D says:

If ya look at him he is actually pretty fit for what is a power build. There are a lot of people who are bulky 0 muscle cuts but just brutal strong. If you ever go back and watch some of those world strongest men competitions from years back you will see they all “look” like big bellied truckers, but then they start dragging around the weighted down trailers and lifting giant boulders above their head and no couch potato is going to be capable of that. Cuts are for show offs, not for people trying to be strong.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Phillips is brutally strong as well and he’ll never be a muscle looking guy. He’s a naturally big strong guy. 6-6 335 with his agility is pretty crazy. He needs to hone his craft and become a better football player. The talent is there.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Tim — not sure where it came from but never feel shy about sharing such comments with key info. Man we spend days on this place sorting out what came in articles from unnamed sources and each other’s BS. And whoever wrote what you read was right and that Phillips is hitting it hard with Suh is just as important as him streaming out his workout vid. Seems he has had his wakeup.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It might have been Armando saying something like “and reportedly Phillips is training with Suh.”

I believe it was a tidbit about Phillips being put on notice. Gase wants him to be able to play 45-50 snaps. Even if that’s too high it sets a bar. 23-27 isn’t cutting it. It was no doubt about stamina. Sometimes young players need to learn what it takes to get to the next level. Suh probably also told Phillips you have a lot of money riding on this. I’m living proof. LOL

WTF are these guys smoking? I never heard one thing about a Landry trade rumor.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Someone floated it out there because of the contract he’s speculated to look for. Landry is a real warrior at WR, but he’s not dynamic enough to get paid at the top of the food chain at WR. He’s more grit and passion then pure ability. Great hands, average speed and size, tough demeanor, but like his buddy Odell he needs to reel his emotions in a bit.

I highly doubt we let Landry walk but what’s his price, $10-12M per?
