The Wedge Scouting Report: Forrest Lamp

I love the feeling of riding on the back of a bullsaurus plowing through a foreign planet’s lifeforms.

They don’t stop for anyone and whatever is in front of ’em is flattened

WedgeonBullsaurus

Kind of reminds me of an NFL lineman plowing through a defensive line!

I’m not overly impressed with the linemen in this year’s draft but…

I love Lamp

Lamp5

Forrest Lamp

at 6’4, 310 pounds Lamp is the biggest prospect I’ve covered this offseason

The Western Kentucky standout is considered by many to be the top Guard in the draft.

Of course, Lamp didn’t play guard at Western Kentucky, he played tackl – 51 games at tackle in 4 years actually.

Lamp7

But most scouts project Lamp to play guard in the NFL.

Actually more often than not, scouts compare Lamp to one of the best guards int he NFL – Zach Martin.

I wonder if Lamp can do for the Dolphins OL what Martin does for the Cowboys OL?

Wouldn’t that be something?  Ajayi rushing for 200 yards each week!

If the Dolphins take Lamp with the 22nd pick – then you can expect a powerful ground game each week.

NCAA Football: Western Kentucky at North Texas

Not impressed with the Hilltoppers?

Sure its a small school and that doesn’t put a lot of players in the NFL

Well Western Kentucky has scheduled some tough out of conference teams including Alabama and LSU the last couple of years – so Lamp has faced top  college talent.

Lamp2

Lamp is good in pass protection.  He has quick feet and balance.

But what really stands out about Lamp is hi nastiness.  Lamp is going to plow through guys in the NFL when teams runs the ball.

Lamp should go early int he draft.  Mid to late first, maybe early 2nd round.  So the Dolphins probably will only get one chance at 22 to take him.

If you love Lamp like me you want to spend another first rounder on offensive line.

If I were to compare Lamp to an Alien weapon of Destruction I would compare him to the Powerful BullSaurus

Piggy Kelly in the 7th is an easy value pick, besides you cant screw up a draft with a 7th round selection.lol

I’d take Chad Kelly in the 7th. I might even take him in the 6th. Low risk, huge reward.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      We have no 6th. 😉

I heard he’s a guy teams won’t even have on their boards. It sounds like he’s a real asshole.

  5. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Am I the only one thinking that if OJ Howard is still there at #22 that we take him? Whether him or someone else, think this team will try to catch a falling star at whatever position.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      BPA

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont see anyone team in the top 10 that really would make them choose Howard over the other picks they have a choice of, and all of them have needs in play-maker positions. So i think he last until there, but starting at 11. even the Saints are suspect to take him, in fact id say half to 3/4’s of the group from 10-21 are likely to take him, so i think he goes somewhere in there.

Really depends on who is still on the board, like Browns doing something stupid with the number 1 and things shift around, or another bong video shows up, things that can really shake things up, i dont see us having much of a chance for him at 22.

My other feeling is that him bieing a mid first kind of guy right now, if he slides, and its not because of some controversial video surfacing, etc. Then his reason he is dropping is because universally, the teams scouts feel he is not worth that pick, which could also mean that we have a similar, and lower, grade on him that makes him not BPA for us. So its possible that even if he does drop, we wont select him.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well for sure it is possible that we wouldn’t take him even if he is unexpectedly there for some reason our guys also know. But was just more using him as an example.

And most teams — particularly the ones in the top half — aren’t set up BPA like we are. And even some after that have coaches thinking they have to win now as far as job security. A big way we can go BPA is that Gase has to figure he has the keys to the car for at least another two seasons at this point. Sorta how we are turning Pats or Steelers.

  6. D's avatar D says:

Tim i think he is a prick, he comes off that way in everything i have seen, however, the “with the 5th selection in the 7th round, the Miami Dolphins select Chad Kelly…. probably humbles him some, and maybe it gets him on track and motivated, and if it doesnt, its not like he would be the first 7th rounder to be cast off a squad and fade into obscurity.

  8. D's avatar D says:

We cant go off CBS, or NFL.com, or any of the other sites player evaluations, we have to trust our own coaches draft grades and big board. I have always wanted to see the big boards (even if its after the draft) just so i had a glimpse of how they have them set up and what players were in what positions, but I/we never will get to see that so its basically just got to be blind trust the team has a ranking, whatever that might be and they execute a plan, whatever that might be to get the guys they want when they have to get them. I still cant fathom what they knew to make the Howard trade up make sense, but there had to be something or they wouldn’t have made it.

  9. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

According to Omar at least, Thomas’ restructured contract is mostly a show me come next year. Yes with a hit if we cut him in 2018, but not a huge one.
    —————————————-
“Thomas, who was acquired in exchange for a seventh-round pick in next month’s draft, turned his contract into a two-year deal worth $12.2 million. According to a league source, $7.5 million of it is fully guaranteed. He will earn $5.5 million in base salary this season, which is fully guaranteed. And in 2018 the seven-year veteran, who turns 29 in June, will earn $6.5 million in base salary, of which $2 million is fully guaranteed.”

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

Polian talks about him all the time. He knows the family well. He says Kelly may well be the most talented QB in the draft. He doesn’t think he’s a bad kid, just very immature. He thinks if he goes to the right team with the right staff, he could turn out to be a very good QB and a better person.

    • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

I say them all play College ball and he has a higher ceiling than the rest!
That is on the field of course!
In my most humble opinion of course! 😉

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I respect Polian a lot. If he says the kid isn’t isn’t a bad kid, I take him for his word. I have also heard other NFL people say Kelly might be the most talented QB of the lot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Then you would think teams with QB needs would take a chance on him before the 7th rd.

      • D's avatar D says:

They probably will, i kind of expect him to be in the boat that AJ McCarron and Zach Mettenberer were, except he has more baggage with more talent, so overall i could easily see him going 4-6th, again though we were talking about my pick on the mock where i got him in the seventh lol, so its not that we were speculating he would go there, just getting him there to us isnt a bad pick, its a low risk high reward one.

  11. D's avatar D says:

Mike, i think it goes a little beyond just maturity issues, i think its a big part of it but its also a entitlement with him, a little bit of a god complex and a little bit of anger management issues. He definately is at best a 50-50 to keep himself focused on football, and i have heard some people talk about him like Cutler, but he is pretty much the anti-cutler. If things aren’t going his way out there, instead of slothing off somewhere and moping, he could kill a wind up shoeing a football so far up a refs ass that the next time we saw him would be on the new reality series based off the longest yard with him the QB of a penal league team.

I still like whats there though, easily the most talented TRUE QB in this draft. I like a lot of the intangibles of Watson, and Kizer, and its where they are strong that Kelly is weak, but the ceiling is way higher with Kelly.

“Of the Dolphins’ 13 core players, wide receiver Jarvis Landry is the only one whose contract is up at the end of the season. Tannenbaum hinted that the team would explore that this offseason and Landry said he was optimistic they’ll reach a deal.”

“The majority of Miami’s key pieces are young, too. Everyone but Wake and Suh are under 30, and the average age of the other 11 players is 25.7. The offense features a 1,200-yard rusher, a two-time 1,100-yard receiver and a quarterback who made strides under Gase. The defense has a solid line and quality pillars behind it in Alonso and Jones.”

        Odds are probably no

        But you play the board
If we want a quality interior OL, the 2nd round might be the place

Tough call on what position to take
But when you look at the depth at DE, the need for Interior OL, S and LB and the opportunity to get better elsewhere

We would almost be better served with multiple 2nd rounders

I’m not opposed to moving back in the 1st
And moving up in the 3rd

If we had 4 2nd rounders we can probably get quality players

But in the back end of the 3rd round it’s hard to beleive elfin or Pocic will be there

UNBELIEVABLE ENDING to the Florida-Wisconsin March Madness game!! And WHO would have figured the SEC to be the strongest conference in the tournament?? With Florida, Kentucky & South Carolina all advancing to the Elite 8, the SEC has 3 of the final 8 teams. With Florida playing South Carolina in the Eastern Finals, the SEC is guaranteed at least one team in the Final 4. A second SEC team, Kentucky, will also make the Final 4 if they beat North Carolina tomorrow.
THAT CONTEST is the most eagerly anticipated game in the entire tournament up to this point! But I don’t see ANY WAY the North Carolina-Kentucky game CAN BE BETTER THAN THE WISCONSIN-FLORIDA GAME!! Tip-off is 2:30 PM, Sunday.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It appears that Zach Brown is now choosing only between Miami and Oakland. I’m kind of indifferent as to whether we sign him or not. It would be nice to have 3 solid veteran LB’s, and go into the draft w/o an immediate need for a LB, which would allow us to draft anywhere we want.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wow, that would be great to have a strong LB corps, after it being the team weakness.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

On paper it would certainly seem a lot better, but I’d like to see it work before I start drooling. 🙂

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When you had what we had last year to close out the season at LB, it’s easy to start drooling with Kiko, Timmons and Brown.

  19. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Kiko Timmons and Brown is probably a 200% improvement
They are all good but not great players

I would like to draft young defensive players
But given our OG situation – it might be wise to hold off on LB if possible
And I do think you can find depth at LB in the 5th round

We have some flexibility if we sign Brown

But if we sign Brown and draft a LB in the 1st round too
Don’t expect any salty pig tears

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we look at safety early, possibly even 1st RD. I think like Timmons, Allen is a stopgap.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Safety and OG are the top new needs as far next year’s roster. I would say LB too, but then our third backer (unless we pick for the future) is going to be coming out in the nickle….and these days than means close to half the time.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

DE too. You might even say CB. Not only OG, but possibly an OG that has played OT too. That’s why guys like Lamp or Dawkins have a lot of value. Unless Ja’Wuan James has a bounceback season, he may be gone next year

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ja’waauuaan was pretty good last year during the last 10 games.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We for sure might go DE, but that will be what I was thinking would be a pick with the future in mind (mainly Wake’s age). Absent injury we are three solid at DE for next year at least. But for that same reason, CB may come in as well. Don’t think Maxwell is a Gase kinda guy. And good point on James’ future….didn’t realize he was up next year. Whether him or not shifts……we can pick high at any OL line position and have a new starting G.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’re going BPA in round one. Just like last year they setup FA to be allowed to do that. Could be OL, or anything on D.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

steve — only positions that would shock me in the first would be QB, WR, RB and TE (unless Howard drops). If we go to say CB or DE in the first though, thinking 2nd and 3rd will be more about present need (OL, S, LB). Third day could be anything.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d hope that would be the case, but you never know, what if one of the top RBs falls to us?

Time of the year when you both get that and no real big info. Least when you are in the top half of the draft you can lock in on just a few players. As always though, same guy still on my radar. Trad E Down on my board every year, particularly in a deep draft year.

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

I wouldn’t be shocked if they took Njoku either. He’s a very good athlete that would probably do well in our offense. He’s more of a longsot than Howard though, because there are guys available later in the draft that may be closer to Njoku

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Howard would be the all phase guy, but if they see the talent in him….wouldn’t be shocked with the pick. They take Njoku will be pretty sure that Thomas will decide right then to rent rather than buy. Would be no 2 TE Gronk/Herandez dreams even possible.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Why would Thomas decide right then? That’s what cowards do. Are you calling him a coward?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cause Njoku seems to be a young seam threat Thomas. So don’t see the two of them as the center of a 2 TE offense. Howard can block too.

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Beside Ken’s wet dreams, what’s going on?

  26. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If I’m Belicheat, and Howard is there at about 12 I’m trading up, but with there lack of a 1st it makes it tough.

  27. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’d rather take Pocic or Elflein in the 2nd or 3rd, than Lamp in the first. Not that I don’t like Lamp, but I’d rather go D in the first.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Depends who is available on D. If Peppers is there I take him over Lamp but say if they take Taco instead I would be disappointed

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In Gase I trust, he’s not going to do something stupid, he’ll take BPA at a position of moderate to huge need.

@ZachBrown_55 announces he will make his choice between Miami, Oakland, bills and others in a TV special called the decision. Tomorrow 8pm
    ______________________________
I’m just hoping that based on the new culture Gase has in place that MIA has opted out of being part of this circus and has cut the cord with this clown.

  34. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Bill Barnwell is at it again. On the subject of Miami knowing the work ethic and character of there own, if they can fix the D the signings of their own should pay off. He says I’d like to believe that, but this is the same team that didn’t know Ajayi was their best back until Oct.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s because he wasn’t the teams best back until Oct. With a starting spot on the line the last preseason game he shit the bed. I guess he must’ve missed that one, or his attitude following the news he wasn’t starting.

    • When you’re dealing with a brand new coaching staff you would think it would take some time before the coaches get a good handle on what everyone is capable of doing for the team.

After one year of coaching them and getting to know what they’ve all got to offer the team they definitely would have a much better idea of the capability of all the players on the team.

Clyde said “it’s going to be fun designing plays for him (Grant) during the offseason”. So, there’s a strong possibility we see some things change as far as what they do on offense and defense just because they now have an offseason to digest what they saw during the season and now tweak things when they have the time to do it rather than trying to do something like that during the season.

During the season, you’re just trying to get ready for the next opponent on a week to week basis. The offseason gives you the time to evaluate your team and make the changes you want/need to make to get it to another level.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think we’d all like to see Grant involved more.

      • yeah, I would too and him practicing with Darr is a good sign. But, my comment was more to address what Barnwell was saying. Anytime a new coaching staff takes over it’s going to take them some time to get to know the players they have on the team and what each can do for the team.

Gase, Clyde, Vance & others really didn’t know much about the guys other than maybe watching a bit of film on them before getting to work. Yeah, they got to spend a full offseason with them in camp but seeing them on the field for a full year and being able to evaluate the team as a whole after the season is probably going to be a tremendous help to them in making any changes they deem necessary since last season.

Of course, that’s just my opinion, but now that they’ve had a full season to work with these guys they probably have a much better understanding of where the team is at in terms of personnel.

BPA 1st 3 rounds. We don’t have to take an edge rusher in this draft, if it falls that way, then take him.

  44. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I’m really not locked into any position or guy at #22. I would have a hard time passing up Howard if he’s there. It all depends who else is there, but I think Howard would be really good value at #22.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, this is what I originally said. “There are a few ways we can go in the 1st round but I still find myself thinking pass rusher.”

It’s just a hunch nothing more.

  46. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

If we go Lamp at 22, we would have the left side of the line set for the next 4 years, at a pretty inexpensive price to boot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think he’d be a good pick too but I don’t see how Indy passes on him at #15. They have to start protecting Luck the same way we feel about the Phins OL.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

You never know how the draft is going to play out. A QB or two will be taken, and this draft is D heavy at the top. That will push some OL down a bit. An OT falls to 15 and that’s how they pass on him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not for Indy. You don’t make Luck the highest paid player in the NFL and then try to get him killed. They might opt for one of the OTs, but Lamp helps them right away somewhere on the OL.

However I agree all kinds of surprises happen on draft day that will change teams’ thinking. The draft is a living thing live, not predetermined. You can see some team targets happening though.

  47. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I wouldn’t care if they drafted an OL at #22. I am always a fan of drafting OL as everyone knows. Hell, I’d be fine if they took OL with both their first picks. Lol
    ***
I don’t think any C/G in this draft has the upside Howard may have. We’re all speculating, so I could be completely wrong. I think Lamp could be a decent player, but I just can’t make blanket statements when I’ve never even seen him play guard…just me. He certainly has some nice tools, and I love his attitude. A month ago, everyone loved Pocic. I think he is in a group of about 5 guys who are fairly equal in value. But, that doesn’t mean if a guy you like a lot is sitting there…you don’t grab him. Maybe they feel that way about one of these guys. I’d be fine with that. I don’t think it would be the best value, but it is a big team need.
    ***
Howard looks like he MIGHT have the ability to be a very good all-around TE…”all around” being a big part of it for me. He seems to have everything you’d want in a player…and appears to have a very high ceiling. I can’t say that about any of these guards. Doesn’t mean I think they suck or aren’t good prospects.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Howard and Lamp are really good prospects. If they last to #22 I’d be shocked. Lamp is a college LT who most feel LG is his future in the NFL. Howard a huge TE who can run, catch, block, jump etc. I don’t see either falling to us. Not trying to be a dark cloud, just saying I don’t see them as legit options. There are at least 12 others I don’t see either. LOL

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
Yeah, probably not…but this whole first round is a toss up this year after pick one, dark cloud. Lol

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

However it happens in the draft, I would like to see a pass rusher, guard, 3rd DT and a DB and/or LB who can contribute. You’re not going to cover everything, but some areas need a jolt of youth and talent.

Last year’s draft was dominated overall on offense 6-2, this year it should be the reverse, especially with the addition of Thomas at TE.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that this draft will be youth and D, but then thought that last year too. Think these guys will be going talent up top though. And almost all our needs for next year can at least be “filled-in” after the draft, whether via trade, vet FA or June cuts.

  50. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Timj, I’d kinda like to see the same positions in the draft for us. The 3rd DT can likely wait till say the 5th Rd. I like Eddie Vanderdoes or Jarron Jones in that area as development guys.

  51. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Yeah Tim, he’s very strong and can push guys back into the pocket very well, good run stuffer too. That’s why I was hoping a guy like him or Jarron who also has earlier round talent, would fall to our 5th round picks.

  52. Tim,
I think there’s a strong possibility Lamp makes it to #22. When you consider Martin went #16 to Dallas and he was probably considered a better prospect at the time and was from a larger DI school, I could see it happening.

  53. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YES, there’s a great amount of speculation regarding how well a given player might perform if he’s drafted by the Dolphins. But here’s something that’s NOT SPECULATION.
    ——————-
IT’s A FACT that if the Dolphins have a below average offensive line this season, they will NOT be legitimate Super Bowl contenders. And it’s likely, with this year’s tougher schedule, they won’t even make the playoffs.

  54. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

An Omar article that for sure OD will agree with. In there is a good point about how we would get the most snap counts out of an OL guy except for safety, which he dismisses as possible based on who might be there at #22. Yeah — he thinks Peppers is too strong safety to be paired with Jones. And he might have something of a point.
    ————————————————————-
Why selecting an offense linemen early makes sense for the Dolphins…

The Dolphins have a habit of taking young linemen drafted early and throwing them right into the fire. That was Miami’s approach with Jake Long, John Jerry, Mike Pouncey, Jonathan Martin, Ja’Wuan James and Laremy Tunsil, And that approach has worked for Miami.

Keep in mind that the offensive linemen Miami has selected in the later-rounds — Dallas Thomas, Billy Turner, Jamil Douglas — needed time to become starters, and they typically struggled throughout their careers. Miami can’t afford that type of patience, or gamble considering the projected starters at both guard spots – Ted Larsen, Jermon Bushrod and Kraig Urbik – will all be in their 30s…..

Lamp isn’t a sexy pick, but he’ll help keep the offense on schedule with the running game, and the quarterback upright.

Peterson went #5 to ARZ. How were teams stupid to not realize it? Everyone knew he was a top talent and he was drafted as such. LOL

  57. D's avatar D says:

Unless Omar is insinuating that Peterson and Hooker are both number 1 overall type picks, then yeah what he was saying was dumb, hell its completely possible people did have them number 1 overall, but the others in the top 4 had bigger needs. Top 10 is always like that, just because the player is BPA, in the top 10, teams are still picking to fill needs and usually big ones.

  58. D's avatar D says:

I have always like Charlie at Walterfootball, not so much Walt, but Charlie does some pretty good articles and he goes to most the events and reports from there with some useful stuff from time to time. Walter does the prospect evals and i think a lot of time he is off on them. Anyways, Charlie has us taking:

Charles Harris DE/OLB Missouri (he’s the guy i said that as a tweener i still felt pretty confident he could play as a DE, where as some of the others i didnt think would)

    Zach Cunningham LB Vandy

    Daeshon Hall DE Texas A&M

Now, id be a little concerend with no OL until the 5th, but if we traded up, or took a couple in the 5th, id be ok with this draft. That would get us two guys at DE who have elite potential, one of which would rotate in this year a decent amount and the other that might as well. On top of that we get the last piece of out LB puzzle, 5th could be to grab a S, and/or a couple of O, or an OL and a TE on the way out of the draft.

  61. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Cunningham falling that far in the 2nd?

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I don’t think it happens, but we’ve seen stranger things occur.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh yeah that’s why I’m not honing in on one specific prospect because who knows what’s going to happen leading up to #22.

We shouldn’t ignore taking a corner early either. Gase is on record saying he’d love to have more and we didn’t add any in FA. We need more corners who can cover the gnats.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think Cunningham could for sure fall into the second. I think he is a pretty special player but there seems to be a lot of people estimating him being a second round selection. If he does fall to the second, which again, i could see that, falling all the way to us at 22 im not sure i find that as believable. Maybe mid 2nd, but its kinda like with Perryman, i would have thought he would have been upper second as well.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I was referring to, falling to us in the 2nd. The knock on him is he is lean, missed too many tackles but is also a great athlete with football skills and upside. Needs to get bigger and stronger at the next level.

      • D's avatar D says:

He arm tackles a good bit, which might be more problematic in the NFL, though im not sure what they are referring to, he really doesnt miss many tackles. He usually gets a good handle on the ball carrier and once he locks on he brings them down. He is pretty lean, but its because he is more in the mold of a Kwon Alexander type, than he is a more prototype guy like Keuchkley. I also think everyone will put on some mucsles mass when getting to the NFL and becoming part of their weight training program. Its the too heavy guys that you have to worry about because they are more likely to not put in the effort to stay trim. You almost cant help but put on weight just showing up to those programs, and following the nutritionist suggestions.

  62. D's avatar D says:

    Round 1 Pick 22: Taco Charlton, DE/OLB, Michigan (A)
    Round 2 Pick 22: Ethan Pocic, C/OG, LSU (A-)
Round 3 Pick 33 (COMP): Alex Anzalone, OLB, Florida (A-)
Round 5 Pick 22: George Kittle, TE, Iowa (B+)
Round 5 Pick 34 (COMP): Ben Gedeon, ILB, Michigan (B+)
Round 5 Pick 40 (COMP): Stevie Tu’ikolovatu, DT, Southern California (C+)
Round 7 Pick 5: Deatrich Wise Jr., DE, Arkansas (C+)

  63. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, good points on Cunningham. I’ve read he gets credited for diagnosing the play and getting there, but he often tackles high and slides off more than you would like against physical runners.

I’d consider him a guy who can help in a rotation as a rookie, play well on STs and develop into a quality starter at some point.

    • D's avatar D says:

You would probably go into the season with Hewitt as your projected starter, but with Cunningham possible winning the spot in camp if he impresses, but most likely taking over sometimes mid season if Hewitt isnt playing particularly well.

I just dont see it this year though, best we would get even trading all the way back to end of the 1st would be a sorta early 3rd and i wouldnt want to give up on a lof of the guys who actually might make it to 22, that for sure arent making it much deeper than that.

After watching Warriors game last night, CSN Bay Area had an interview with the mayor of Oakland. Her argument was that the city has exceeded everything LV offered… but the Raiders have not agreed to sit down for a talk or presentation… not once! Davis the Second must think LV has financial opportunities beyond football season. i.e. renting the stadium for concerts and such. Its the same reason Warriors are moving to the other end of the bay bridge in a few years.

    • D's avatar D says:

That and i think the NFL wants to be in Vegas. I think a lot of this is being pushed by the NFL more so than the team itself, and they probably sweetened the pot for the owner to do it. LA thing was same deal.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rhino — I don’t know exactly who is right, but keep in mind that the Oakland mayor was there explaining why her team was losing its football team. Bit different story from Goodell (who said basically “you tried but couldn’t get it together”), but then guess the fix could have been from the other side for the reasons you name with Davis.

And Oakland offered up like $200 mil while Vegas is putting in $650 mil to a new stadium. What’s a team and business owner to do at that point?

  73. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

We know we need two starters: one OL and one front 7 def.

After the 22nd pick, where is the biggest drop off in talent to pick 54? OL or LB/DE

If Lamp is available, I think they take him to ensure a dominant run game as the foundation of our offense.

However, IF the team thinks OGs don’t have to be top tier guys as long as center and both tackles are… then it will be a defensive pick for sure. In this case they’d probably wait on OL until 3rd round.

My ‘back and forth’ on this dilemma always goes back to our history of flops trying to fill the guard position with mid round picks.

    • D's avatar D says:

To me it boils down to our pick value. Its not that great so you dont really get enough in trade, unless you can fleece a team for a really big difference in value. If you cat a team desperate enough you might be able to get something better than a upper to mid third, but its not likely we would get a pick with high enough value to offset the loss of the players we are losing out on. Just have to see how the draft shapes up but i dont see trading back being a smart move this year, not in the first.

  74. D's avatar D says:

Man son, Watson is your new Newton huh?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Very poor logic Mando. Because they didn’t answer questions about Dion’s status, like they did for Timmons, and others, it means he won’t be a part of the team this year. The team is excited about Timmons and some of the others, and they know they’re in the team’s plans, so they talk about them. The team doesn’t know the status yet of Dion, so they don’t talk about him. You can read anything you’d like into this, but it doesn’t make it so. I’d bet there’s more of a chance he doesn’t make it on the field for a regular season game, but it’s, because he hasn’t played in a couple of years and has been a big bust so far, not, because of something they said or didn’t. If he doesn’t make it this year Mando will say see I told you so. Way to go out on a limb.

    __________________________________________

I disagree that the team is built to win now. I don’t see them winning more than 8 games this year, especially if we go into the season with Larsen and Bushrod starting at guard. We’ll never sustain drives and it’s going to be difficult for us to score and I think we’re going to be playing from behind a lot this year because of it.

We should be somewhat improved vs the run on D this year but I don’t know so much that’s going to be enough because I believe the offense will go from scoring just over 22 ppg in ’16 to right around scoring just 20 ppg in ’17.

It’s going to be a much tougher season this year even if we stay healthy. We will need to run the ball much more consistently than we did last year and I just don’t see that happening with the offensive line we’ve got right now.

“It really resonated with the players and agents seeing how much we care about our players.” Tannenbaum said. “I can’t tell you how many calls we got from other players’ agents that we just didn’t have an interest in. It took off way more quickly than we thought, and I think heading into the future, if and when we approach certain free agents, [that we take care of our own will] be a big part of our narrative.

Thanks guys. I feel so bad for the family. Wife is 52, kids are 24 and 18. Sam had it rough for quite some time, he was an alcoholic, but he was clean for the last 5 years or so, and man, he was a completely different person too. Shame that after he cleaned himself up, this happens, but that’s how life is.

No question it was a circle of life Sunday. My parents are buried in the same cemetery, so I visited them after the burial. I don’t go to the cemetery often, but I did get awful choked up when I told them about my nephew. My parents just adored Phillip, he was the king.

He’s in the zone right now where he ain’t getting what he wants (whether money or guaranteed years) and waiting for some team to pony up, whether it be the three that he has visited or some other. He can wait on that to happen till draft day……and lots of cases settle the day before trial.

I keep seeing Elflein and Pocic to us in the 3rd, if we can do that, no reason to take OL in the first.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t really think we need to take OL in the 1st generally
but Lamp would be a nice edition
He looks like the only viable option on the OL in the 1st

When I say win now I don’t mean a championship or blow it up. I mean compete now while we build. But we are definitely going to go for it each year from here on out until the core is no longer here.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It is a great place to be…..and it pretty much all changed in one year. We are a playoff contender with an up arrow. Think a lot of that has to do with Gase, but also cause he (and Grier and Tanny) have job security. Lets them plan ahead rather than worry about moving. Wouldn’t be surprised if in the draft we trade down in a deal for future picks with teams that have guys on the hot seat or are pushing for the ring now.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

we are good enough to be a perennial playoff contender
and frankly we have been for years

if you go back to 2008 when we went 11-5
we are mostly 7-9 and 8-8
with the (2) 6-10 years sprinkled in when we fired Sparano and Philbin

      no question we’ve been flawed
that mostly amounts to an average team in the NFL or sometimes a team that can compete for a wildcard birth

but its hard to win our division bc of the Cheats dominance
      they usually win 12+ games
I don’t think we have been a 12+ win team it would be nice to be on the way there

the difference between those 7-9/8-8 seasons and a 10 or 11 win seasons on the other hand is usually the result of a few close games
sometimes it comes down to coaching
      sometimes QB play
      sometimes the defense

I honestly think we were good enough to win 10 games every season since 2008 but we failed to

I think saying we can compete now is legitimate
we pretty much are able to compete for a wildcard
and we have been for years
we just choked in most years over the last 8 years (since 08) and we didn’t this year or in 2008

the #6 team in the playoffs is usually not a championship contender

Bittersweet weekend. Sunday morning, went to the funeral for a long time friend who passed away Saturday. Sunday afternoon, went to see my nephew and his wife and her parents, and my sister and brother-in-law, and my son Lucas who we picked up in Hoboken, and went out to dinner in Hoboken to celebrate my nephew’s birthday, and also that they are having a baby in August. Sad morning and afternoon, nice evening. Just like life, sad and happy.
    —————————————–
Not just the sad and happy balance of life, but also the cycle of life in full effect.

I am not a pessimist by any stretch of the imagination, but when im on site working with one of our hospital clients, they have this thing most of them do where they play lullaby music every time a baby is born, and one day i found myself realizing, there are deaths happening at those hospitals too, hopefully not as many, but it does ground you a lot of times when you are sitting there and you see grief and elation playing out right before you. Someone being born and someone dying plays out every second for someone some place, best you can do is have empathy for their situation and be happy with what you have and the fact you arent that person right now.

Mike, congratulations and condolences for your situation my friend, and i hope you have more of the latter than the former in the future.
