D-fense!

Well, the Dolphins brass have made it clear, they wanted to improve the defense, and so far in the 2017 NFL Draft, the first 3 picks have gone to that side of the ball.  In the 1st RD pick #22, The Dolphins took Mizzou DE Charles Harris (6’3″ 253)

r192559_576x324_16-9

In the 2nd RD, at pick #54, the Dolphins selected Ohio St. LB Raekwon McMillan (6’2″ 240).  If I’m going to be honest, I didn’t really look closely at McMillan, there were other guys I was more interested in.  McMillan could probably play any of the 3 LB spots, but maybe he’s our future MLB.

Raekwon-McMillan-091314-480-wide-x-320-high

The Dolphins apparently weren’t done adding talent to the defense, because in the 3rd RD, the Dolphins took Clemson CB Cordrea Tankersley (6’1″ 199).

I hope the Dolphins will add some beef for the O-line, but that remains to be seen.  Pitt OG Dorian Johnson is still available, as is Utah OG Isaac Asiata.  In any case, Dolphins took care of business on the defensive side, and that’s a good thing

    Really liking this draft….a lot!

Extra note on McMillan….he’s 20yrs old & wont be 21 until week 12 I believe.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes, and I really like that! I’m liking the pick more and more. Pure LB prospect, not a DE/LB. He may have a leg up on some of those guys who did both, and like you said, he’s younger.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Highly intelligent on & off the field. Like I said he reminds me of David Harris when he came out of Michigan. Seen a lot of other people compare him Lawrence Timmons when he came out of FSU.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Also I think, IMHO, he got labeled as an unathletic thumper 2 down player because he’s 6-2 245. I’ve watched plenty of his games & he’s definitely a sideline to sideline LB. he’s also better in coverage than he’s credited for.

And we need a undrafted rookie to be a big contributor or starter to round out a good roster.

the stupid jests are shopping former 1st round pick Sheldon Richardson. We need a run-stopping DT. Could we trade them 2 5ths and a 7th for the big guy?

  9. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

The new OL coach has a big challenge then with us trading B.Albert and tunsil playing his 1st year at OT and now guard position is open.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I think we are going to address the OL through FA, now that we have been closed out of drafting some pedigree OL. I thought we might snag J.Evans before draft but Green Bay snagged him. Several decent average OL guards out there so we may be able to snag one cheaply.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

spoon feed them early and 2-3 yrs down the road we might have some starters. The teams culture has changed from a frat house to a professional environment where everyone is accountable.

  11. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So one way to look at this draft is that we got the guy scouts say is a Cam Wake clone, the guy they say is a Lawrence Timmons clone, and the guy they say is a Byron Maxwell clone, although all 3 are rated higher than our original 3 were when they came out of college.

They will not be pressured into “must play as a rookie” roles although they are ready enough to take meaningful snaps and to learn from, give rest to, and eventually replace the old guys.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Wake clone even wore the same number, the Timmons clone is almost exactly the same stature, and the Maxwell clone came out of the same college!!!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think so, but we’ll see. Cunningham is much better in coverage, but we can’t stop the run, and Raekwon can, so…

I was on the last last article/blog losing my religion. I’ll transfer the posts over later.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

McMillan is a much better tackler than Cunningham. It’s not even close. Cunningham plays faster. I’m not sure he is, but Cunningham plays like a more athletic guy. McMillan is a safe, need pick. I think coaches can trust McMillan more than they can Cunningham. You want stability and dependability at MLB. McMillan is a sure tackler. I just wish he’d make more in the right hole, quicker. If they can coach up McMillan, he could be solid. I don’t see a Ray Lewis or Keuchly in waiting. That’s part of the fun of following a team…seeing how the new players develop.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

How much do you think the defense improved from last year per centage wise? I say 10-15 per cent.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

R.Jones is coming back plus we grabbed Timmons who is much better than the UF lb we had. Philips is starting to peak in his career, Wake is probably fully recovered and we have the experienced players knowing the system better. I think they could be a average to above average.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I liked Cunningham & Raekwon a lot. I think Cunningham has great instincts and is smooth in coverage. I like Raekwon’s all around game, especially his consistency as a tackler.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What does he do in coverage that you like?

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Just his coverage. He’s not Cunningham in coverage, but he can handle his assignments. Some people have tried to paint him as 5.0 guy who can’t cover a flat tire. I enjoy guys who can be assignment sound and he is.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I hope you’re right, we need him to be what you think he is.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    jetssssssuck,
I can’t say now. We’ll have to see. I’m more excited about what Timmons will do for us than any of these guys yet. Timmons is a proven commodity. He’s a nice upgrade in the middle for us. Is McMillan gonna play at MLB or SOLB? Is Harris just a sub package guy? It’ll be fun watching these young guys develop.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There seems to be a myth about a ready made NFL player. I think of Luck, 2 Cowboys from last year, but it’s really a very small percent that hit the ground running. So are we better off drafting guys like we did, than having someone that is expected to start?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

My point is why draft players to start initially, when it may risk future growth, and hurt your team this year? It’s why some don’t like starting rookies, Kevin Coyle. There’s always going to be exceptions, so you let those ready start, but don’t force it.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Luck played a huge factor in the Dallas situation. That OL is one of the best we’ve seen in recent history.

To be fair, what LB except for Foster doesn’t have some learning to do? I loved Reddick, and would have been thrilled to have him, but is he ready to step in right now and man one of the LB spots w/o learning on the job where he’s supposed to be and what’s going on? No way. Foster is, but man, I don’t trust that guy.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

To be fair who knows how long Foster will last? I worry about a guy who has a concussion history that was red flagged at the combine who plays the style he does. I hope his health & body hold up as I wish nothing but success for him.

None, but that isn’t the point on why I didn’t like the Raekwon pick. I don’t like his play speed, reaction time and coverage skills, but I’ll come around. His work ethic, physical traits, and desire should Trump that.

REALLY NICE WORK, MIKE! –Thank you.
    ————-
I think all 3 of these defensive selections have a chance to play A LOT this year. Hats off to the organization so far. But I’m more than a bit puzzled by their failure to improve the status of one of our greatest needs, the Guard position. The first team All-American G/C (Pat Elflein) was there for the taking in Round 3. Miami passed. But Minnesota did not. I think they got a bargain. Within a couple of years, we’ll likely know who made the best choice, Miami with Tankersley or the Vikings with Elflein. I hope it’s Miami.
    ———–
As Mike previously pointed out, it’s still NOT TOO LATE for the Fins to pick up a highly rated offensive lineman. Asiata from Utah and Johnson from Pitt are both highly respected by scouts. And both are still on the board. Taking either of these guys would constitute a serious attempt to upgrading the O-Line. And, believe me, the O-Line needs an upgrade. While this upgrade MIGHT happen when guys from other NFL teams get cut this summer, I believe the best course is to get one of these young, strong, guards coming fresh out of college. I’m generally of the opinion that other team’s cuts and rejects probably won’t help us very much.

    What do you folks think?

Mikey Tradey Pants definitely has a plan, and that’s to trade as much as possible. Hopefully Gase and Grier can keep him in check.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I doubt he trades next year’s picks, so he’s limited, but I have no problem trading the 5ths to move up to get someone they like. I think Desmond King is still there I’d trade all 4 to get him.

  26. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    OD

D-Bolt’s got it covered. Dorian Johnson is a good OG, and from all reports, we “love” Isaac Asiata, so we’ll see. If we don’t trade into the 4th, and probably early, Johnson will be likely be gone. Asiata may make it to our first pick in the 5th

  27. dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think today we come out w/ Wise at DE & Fuller as an OL. I wouldn’t be shocked if they added Eli Lee as another LB, but more probable they go TE.

I get where some people see OL as a NEED, I really do…..who wouldn’t want a stud OL?,…but I think that the dolphins brain trust may not feel as strongly as mere fans do……looking at last year stats……Miami passed for 3716 yards while giving up 4101….and rushed for 1824 yards while giving up 2247 yards……i’m not an expert, but it doesn’t take one to see that our offense wasn’t horrible as people make it out to be, and our defense was worse than people thought…….hence, the draft to this point DEFENSE!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That doesn’t account for the injuries we had on D.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

rushing for 1824 yards is good but 900 plus of those yards was for 3 games where we had a healthy line. We saw what kind of personnel we had when Gase took over. He got rid of the OT within 1 week of his hire. During the season he got rid of 2 players that were starter for us. The quality depth is not there with the players we used last year. The team has been snake bitten over the last 10-15 yrs with FA bust, bully gate 2 starters, j.grove and other guy leaving or not being resigned because of the salary cap. The OL has been the weakest unit for the last 10-15 yrs. The team’s commitment needs to be improved or we will stay a below average OL. What’s the saying how and where the game is won?

  30. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Top

I’m sure you watched every game like I did. We had some crazy production when we had our 5 best OL last year, 3 200+ yard rushing games from Ajayi. To me, the glaring problem was when we didn’t have the best 5, it fell off a lot. Just think of how ineffective we were against Pittsburgh in the playoffs. There’s just a huge disparity in effectiveness when we have 5 good guys up front and when we don’t.. I think it’s important. Now it’s possible we look to FA after the draft and pick up an OL there if we can’t get who we want in the draft. I just don’t want to have the same issue crop up again this year, where our OL depth comes back to bites us in the ass.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – I think we’ve done fine so far, I dig it. I just don’t want to come away from this draft w/o an OL who can start. Unless, like I mentioned, we plan on shopping after the draft

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

AMEN, Mike!! NOT taking an O-Lineman makes sense ONLY if you believe our 5 starting O-Linemen stay healthy all year. When they WEREN’T healthy last year, we sucked! QUALITY DEPTH is what we lacked in the O-Line last year. Hopefully, they’ll address that situation today in the draft.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

G was for me the only need for next season coming in and it is still sitting there. Depth can be found in the 5th, but however it happens still thinking there will be someone else competing for a G spot and/or insurance for Pouncey. Forget who brought it up yesterday, but Mangold makes a lot of sense.

I stopped once and watched . It’s cool how they run full speed and cross each other to create opening for a pass. The 3 received set where they are together on one side is crazy. They criss cross and players delay starting off the line and then take off. Its like a dance show on broadway . Perfectly orcantraysed (sic) and stop and talk after almost every practice play and point out different views of where they are supposed to be. It’s a passing league now so I guess these WR’s have to have lots of smarts now a days instead of just doing a post pattern.

  36. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So was thinking about where we might pick in the 5th round and instead of need…..my mind turned to a new problem. There are certain positions where guys we take might not make the 53 but still be poached if they were put on the P-squad. Believe that is a sign that this team is getting better.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well the issue on D was we sucked against the run, so what do they do, they bring in an edge that can’t stop the run, a CB that would rather watch someone else make a tackle, and a box LB that can’t find the right gap and can’t read a play, and is slow to react.

Harris as a situational, 3rd down pass rusher will help out tremendously in those situations, but isn’t ready to smell the field on first down. Because we don’t need him to be a 3 down DE this year he’s got time, but sure why you’d select that in the first.

Jetssuck last year in 16 we traded picks from 17 to get Caroo so we don’t have those picks now

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m not sure he price Rhino

But keep in mind our 5th rounders are fairly late in the round as 2 of them are comp picks

But maybe we can get into the 4th by trading a 5th and a 7th
And that way keep 2 5ths

    (Piggy shrugs)

Personally I don’t think we need to push to move up

Picks in the 5th round are 166, 178, and 184. Likely we do some wheeling and dealing, but if we don’t it is all gonna happen fast.

It’s not like there is a reason to be reminded about the year you live in every day or anything

        😜

  67. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s amazing to me how many people that announce the pick mess up ‘2017’, lol.

  68. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Arizona got Reddick and Baker
    That’s a pretty good haul

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Even as we’ve just gone about our business some of you guys are still waiting for Tannenbaum to make some trade to piss you off. We are out of his range right now, this draft is all Grier. Mr. T is about big moves for the franchise, not the 5th rd. LOL

  70. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Florida Atlantic’s Trey Hendrickson, C-USA’s defensive Player of the Year, goes to the Saints at pick #103 near the end of the 3rd round. This sackmaster is sure to help the Saints’ anemic defense.

  71. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

If we are drafting for the year 20017, I want to draft a Morlock

  72. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

How about this, why don’t they just say with 58th pick, the Eagles take . . . . Do we need to be reminded what year it is every pick?

It’s weird that so often it’s the date. No exaggeration or hyperbole, my wife and I counted 4 times last night people messed up ‘2017’. It was happening so often, we thought about making it a take-a-shot game, lol.

  80. New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m still with Mike on Carroo but maybe we’ll see something this year. Long time until the 5th but we filled most of the needs. I think one reason we picked McMillan is because of Misi. Cunningham and Florida guy are either smaller or injury prone. We got a beefcake that should stay healthy and driven for 4 years or longer. Tanker is just like Maxwell but that’s ok. As long as he doesn’t get burnt a lot and handsy, it’s all good.

  81. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Our first 2 5ths can get us back up to our original #22 in the 4th

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If Blair Brown is still there in the 5th, and he might be, I wouldn’t mind using one of our 3 picks on him

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Youth on defense is what we all wanted and we added one in each unit. Pass rush, tackling and ball skills.

  84. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Tim
Our defense was so bad, I’m just excited to see some focus on it. Having almost all of the offense returning should see great results from that side. Now, hoping our D can just slow someone down. Just slow them down a little bit, lol

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When you lose your best safety, your 2nd safety goes down late in the year, all the LBs at some point are hurt, your project DT doesn’t play the beginning of the year, your prize FA DE sucks all year, that will make any D suck, but this is a new year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re on our way. There will be a lot of competition this year.

  85. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Lions picks Reeves-Maybin to go along with Davis

Might work out well for them

“but this is a new year.”

    hell yes!……..”GASE”……year two…..zero in.

  88. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In the history of our franchise I don’t remember a good year when our LBs were bad, last year may be the only one.

  89. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Alonso, Timmons, Misi, Hewitt, McMillan will likely be the game day mix with maybe Hull or one of the other guys as depth and STs. Hewitt and McMillan will also play on STs.

  90. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Can’t believe Jake Butt, Jordan Leggett, Kittle and Sprinkle are still there

We should take a TE when we pick
We can get a good one

  91. New Age's avatar New Age says:

    Steve,

We haven’t had a really good D since 2010. I understand some of the issues but it’s not an aberration at this point.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase seems to have a pretty good eye for talent, once he’s had some time to work with them. The projects we had on the OL last year were all sent packing early, this year guys lake Paysinger and Jenkins gone. He’s not afraid to show the door to guys that will never make it.

  95. TOP SECRET's avatar TOP SECRET says:
