State of the Roster

As of today, May 4th, the NFL has completed 2/3 of it’s roster filling , with pre-draft free agency, and the NFL Draft.  The next phase is post-draft free agency.  There are still quite a few players who remain unsigned, and then of course, there will be cuts coming up as well, which will put more players into the free agency pool.

For the most part, the heavy lifting has been done, and any other roster adds most likely will not be major ones.  The Dolphins did a great job in free agency and the draft to ensure they  filled the roster holes that existed.  There still may be some tweaking, but the big moves have been made.

On offense, this is what we’ve done.

QB – Ryan Tannehill, Matt Moore, Brandon Doughty and David Fales

Dolphins signed former Bears QB David Fales in FA

RB – Jay Ajayi, Kenyan Drake, Storm Johnson

At the moment, RB Damien Williams has still not signed his RFA tender of $1.8M.  Williams has no option to play for anyone else but the Dolphins in the NFL, so he either signs his tender, or sits out the year.

WR – Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Devante Parker, Leonte Carroo, Jakeem Grant, Rashawn Scott and Isaiah Ford

The Dolphins re-signed Kenny Stills in FA and drafted Ford in the 7th RD.

TE – Julius Thomas, Anthony Fasano, MarQueis Gray and Thomas Duarte

The Dolphins traded for Julius Thomas with the Jaguars and signed Anthony Fasano in FA.

OL – Laremy Tunsil, Isaac Asiata, Mike Pouncey, Jermon Bushrod, Ja’Wuan James, Terry Poole, Sam Young, Ted Larsen, Anthony Steen and Kraig Urbik

The Dolphins drafted Isaac Asiata, signed Ted Larsen in FA

This is what we’ve done on defense

DE – Cam Wake, Andre Branch, William Hayes, Charles Harris, Terrence Fede, Julius Warmsley, Nicholas Williams and Arthur Miley

Miami drafted Charles Harris, traded for William Hayes with the Rams, and picked up Williams and Miley in FA

DT – Ndamukong Suh, Jordan Phillips, Davon Godcheaux, Vincent Taylor and Lawrence Okoye

Miami drafted both Godcheaux and Taylor, and signed Okoye as a FA

LB – Kiko Alonso, Lawrence Timmons, Koa Misi, Raekwon McMillan, Neville Hewitt, Mike Hull, Deon Lacey and Lamin Barrow

Miami drafted Raekwon McMillan, signed Lacey and Barrow as FA’s.  They call him Lamin Barrow, quite right!

CB – Byron Maxwell, Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, Bobby McCain, Cordrea Tankersley, Lafayette Pitts and Jordan Lucas

Miami drafted Cordrea Tankersley

S – Reshad Jones, Nate Allen, Walt Aikens, Michael Thomas, A.J. Hendy

ST – K Andrew Franks, P Matt Darr

KR/PR Jarvis Landry, Jakeem Grant and Kenyan Drake

The Dolphins signed the following Undrafted Free Agents:

  • Cameron Malveaux, DE, Houston
  • Drew Morgan, WR, Arkansas
  • Malcom Lewis, WR, Miami
  • De’Veon Smith, RB, Michigan
  • Torry McTyer, DB, UNLV
  • Praise Martin-Oguike, DE, Temple
  • Larry Hope, CB, Akron
  • Eric Smith, OL, Virginia
  • Damore’ea Stringfellow, WR, Mississippi
  • Maurice Smith, DB, Georgia
  • Chase Allen, LB, Souther Illinois
  • Joby Saint Fleur, DE, Oklahoma State
  • Francis Owusu, WR, Stanford
  • Matt Haack, P, Arizona State

I would have to say the Dolphins exceeded my expectations so far.  To me, the biggest questions are on the O-line.  Obviously the biggest question is to whether C Mike Pouncey will be healthy enough to play, to play well, and for how long.  He’s the cog that gets everything rolling.  If he’s healthy, it will be a huge boost for the team.  If not, either Anthony Steen, Kraig Urbik or Ted Larsen will have to step up.  The next question is who starts at LG and RG.  Gase said his preference was Jermon Bushrod at RG, but nothing is in stone yet.  Will it be FA pickup Ted Larsen or newly drafted Isaac Asiata at LG?  Most of us feel Asiata will take it, but you can’t discount experience, so Larsen, Urbik or Steen are still in the running

Getting LB Lawrence Timmons in FA was a huge pickup.  He’s as solid as can be, and he plays every game.  He tackles, and he can still run pretty well at 31.  Drafting Raekwon McMillan was a necessity.  I know Gase likes Misi, and it’s definitely possible that Misi is an opening day starter, but how long can Misi stay healthy?  In his 7 year career, Misi has only once played 16 games.  Contrast that with Timmons, who played 16 games in 9 of his 10 seasons, missing only 2 games in 2009.  McMillan may not start from game 1, but if he plays up to his potential, he’ll be in there at some point.

While Reshad Jones will be back, I’m not thrilled with Nate Allen.  The former 2010 2nd RD pick has languished in OAK for 2 seasons.  Coming off an injury, he wasn’t the same player.  I think the fact we doubled down with T.J. MCDonald was telling.  Even though T.J. won’t be available until week 8, to me, that wasn’t a big vote of confidence for Nate Allen.

At CB, we have pretty solid depth.  For some reason, Maxwell gets little love here due to a slow start, but he’s a solid player.  Howard fought injuries, but he flashed some good and bad, as expected in his rookie season.  I’m excited to see what he can do with a full year of workouts and training camp and pre season.  Lippett also showed lots of promise last year.  Good ole Bobby McCain struggled some, so that could potentially open the door for Tankersley.  Not necessarily a slot CB, he might get a shot there, or maybe Howard or Maxwell would move inside while Tankersley stays outside.

On the D-line, we resigned Andre Branch, and traded for a  run stopping DE in William Hayes.  Drafting Charles Harris who already has a wicked spin move was a great addition and should give our pass rush some sizzle.  We drafted a couple of DT’s, both have potential as rotational guys, but neither of them are anywhere near ready to start. Jordan Phillips hopefully will realize his potential this year, and form and unstoppable duo of DT’s with he and Suh.

The offense was pretty set IMO before the draft, save for the O-line.  This has potential to be a power run offense, but one that could open it up with the passing game with Landry, Stills, Parker and TE Julius Thomas.  Who knows, maybe Carrooooooo even shows up this season.

ST’s should be once again pretty good with pro bowler P Matt Darr returning, and Andrew Franks was OK.  Landry, Drake and Grant give some fireworks to the return game so looking good there.

All in all, we have a lot to be optimistic about, I don’t believe this team has a glaring weakness, perhaps just a soft spot if everything doesn’t come together for the O-line.

GO DOLPHINS, ZERO IN!

    Nice article Mike!

    FEST IS AGAINST THE YETS

Game is Sun, Oct 22 at one. So make your travel plans……earlier you book flights typical the cheaper. Like always, will get together the night before and Chef Warren will have his tailgate spread ready.

Looks like seats will be about $80 each, but the way they do it and as early as we are in might be better this year (one price across the sideline nosebleeds)…..and if not you can biotch about what I did after.

Seat Draft Day is May 11…….and we will be in. But need all you guys to firm up your numbers so can give a real reserve.

    ALREADY IN (for either game)

    Pig
    PhinDog (+2 or +3)
    Mike E (+1)
    Son (+1…..and # will grow)
    Rock
    Chef Warren (+1)
    Stanger (+1)
    Phelonius (+1 to +3)
    Toba (+1)
    OD
    Brian in NY (+1?)

    POSSIBLE
    Ken (make that probable)
    Herd
    Howie
    Getterdone

P-Dog, Son (with your crew), Brian — need to know about your plus numbers. OD — you want to sit with the boys? Not signing in blood yet, but…..need to set the reserve number one week from today. And please make sure anyone who wanders in that we haven’t seen in a while know.

  3. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Real solid analysis Mike E. It is funny cause in both FA and the draft I was hoping the big moves would be at G and S…..none of them were, but I still think how they did was as smart as smart can be. Don’t downplay Larsen though. Dude has a pretty good resume. I’d say better then Bushrod’s, even if Gase loves the guy.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The best 5 will play on the OL, but yeah we all seem to be looking past Larsen, in the hope that Asiata starts, because of his mauling blocks, and because Bushrod started last year. Larsen will be with the 1st team initially, it will be up to Asiata to supplant one of them.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not sure why you would say Larsen has a better resume than Bushrod who was a starting LT in the NFL for years, and then a RG for us. Larsen was a sometimes starter, but mostly a backup. Doesn’t mean he’s a bad player though.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Larsen has a better resume at OG, that’s the position being discussed. Come on Mike follow along😉

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Least when it comes to inside. And dude has a nasty streak to him as well. Maybe it was the PFF grades and Randy’s comments on Bushrod versus new toy…..but could easily see Larsen as winning the battle. And contract says he is worth just as much.

  4. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Great article Mike, you covered every move of any significance, if I missed the entire off-season, I’d be caught up now. Amazing how an amateur does a better job than the hacks getting paid, I mean this article could be in a preseason magazine.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Steve, that’s a nice compliment

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m right with you on that. Unless I was following every move (which you can in the comments), this site would be my place to go if I was just wanting to know what was going on as far as reading a couple articles a week. And props to Mike E and the Pig for that.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If I’m gone for a week or a day, I come here first to see what’s going on.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Good write up, Mike. I think we’re a better team on paper than last year but like Suh always says that doesn’t mean anything until you prove it on the field.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks – and quite true. For some reason, the ’94 season sticks in my head as a prime example of that.

  6. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It’ll be interesting to see if the defense improves and how. We added the pieces where they needed to be and now it’s up to execution.

  7. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

The DTs idolized Suh and our new CB….

“I watched Byron play when I was being recruited out of high school, so I’m quite familiar with his game,” Tankersley said. “I kind of model my game after him. Being on the same team as him and having the opportunity to play opposite of him, that’s a blessing.”

  8. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Very nice Mike, if i had to point to a weak spot it would be CB, I think Urbik beat steen out last year at center and if anything happens to pouncey i look to him as a back-up. I sure hope Asiata can win one of the guard positions, that would mean we have improved also losing albert i hope tunsil can man LT

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Thanks Rob – Steen was hurt last season though. I think Steen may be the better center.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steen was playing on a high ankle sprain down the stretch and couldn’t go anymore so Urbik replaced him the last few games of the season.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

urbik also played the steelers playoff game where i thought steen was healthy after 4 weeks of healing

  9. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rob, I meant the playoffs too. I think at that point the team just stayed with Urbik whether Steen was healthy or not and I don’t know if he was or not.

It’s a new season with some new competition. Let’s hope we stay relatively healthy and have a starting 5 that builds chemistry.

  10. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

    i’m think’n Tunsil…Asiata…pouncey…bushrod…james

  13. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Nice job mike. I Think we’re a better team last year but our schedule is a lot tougher. We play both NFC south and AFC west which are 2 tough divisions. We also play @ baltimore.

This team could be better but have a tougher time making the playoffs.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      12- 4

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

koolaid :-). I would be very happy with 10 wins. But IMO vegas line is correct at 7.5 or 8.
I just don’t see how they think denver with the toughest schedule is gonna get 9 wins.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Vegas lines are actually predictions

they are based on numbers that are more likely for people to bet

Why not now – why not make the jump is 2017?

  14. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I look at the defense and I am impressed at what I see

The DL is deep deep deep
We are gonna end up cutting someone I would want to keep before we get down to 53

I am surprised to say I am happy with the LB group having been utterly disgusted with out LBs last season both prior to the season and during the season
Maybe Misi starts but if he is injured – hey we have depth and maybe even his replacement is some one like McMillan that we can get excited about weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I also like the CB group. Last offseason I heard people (like Omar) suggesting it was our weakness and I was like NO WAY, it’s LB! I liked Tankserly in 2016 when I was looking at Alexander from Clemson. I think he is solid. Of course the big question is nickel and whether some one can man that job effectively against the cheats

In terms of safety, I hope Jones is 100% that will be huge. I kind of figure between Allen, Thomas, Aikens and a late season MacDonald it will work itself out – probably MacDonald is the atsrater going into the playoffs 😀

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Completely agree about Pouncey

He is key to the OL being effective. I thought he was key last year as well. Its one reason I didn’t think OG was the priority some others thought it was

I hope Asiata can be the guy we are hoping he is. Time will tell

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The FO is counting on pouncey not being injured again. That’s a mistake. I agree with those that think we should try and add Mangold as a backup. We have the money.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mangold hasn’t been able to stay healthy either and that’s part of the reason he was released at 33 years old.

  16. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The weakness of the roster on paper IMO is Tight End

Its not a bad group but its a bit underwhelming. Thomas’ play is huge in terms of that group’s impact. I think our WRs are pretty good, and between Ajayi rushing for 200 every week 😉 and the receivers fighting for catches, I don’t think we need a 40+ catch TE
Fasano is an excellent run blocker – so he may see a lot of playing time with little targets

Farty for Duarte! Maybe he comes around

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

what happens if Ajayi goes down?

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Drake!

        Maybe…

Signing guys off the street to play RB when one gets injured is not that off in the NFL

Maybe the new guy Deveon Smith? Some people are excited about him

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we have a receiving TE (Thomas) and a blocking TE who can catch (Fasano). That should suffice

  17. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    An those are the Oinks!

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Just got off the phone with OD. Since he can’t get on the site from work…..wanted to tell Mike E that the article was fantastic.

He also said he wants one ticket (maybe two if his wife is up to it) with the crew in the nosebleeds. So he figured least on Fest days his primo seats aren’t as good as wherever we are.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tell him thanks Stanger. Good man that he’s sitting with the crew. Best way to watch a game!

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

He always ended up with us there last two times around anyhow. So guess he figured that out. 🙂

I’m gonna be out till Sunday (unless I find a computer)…..please tell anyone who might be a fest person about it. Seat draft is one week from now.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Will do, I made sure I asked for the time off today. We should be going down Wednesday to Monday. Haven’t booked anything until I get confirmation on my time off request.

  19. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

do you think we should add mangold as an insurance policy?
    ________________________________________________________

Urbik, the best of the backups, is suited for two or three-game spurts at either center or guard before defenses begin to see him as a chink in the armor. If he’s the starting center for 10 games, you’re going to be exposed. Steen, promising and all, lost his starting job to Urbik last season when Pouncey went down. And Brendel was inactive most of the season.

    http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article148539804.html

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That may be the least thought out article Mando has ever written. Why on earth would Mangold sign with us, when he has other teams interested, to be a back up?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It’s not really accurate either. Steen was injured and Urbik took over. It’s very misleading to say he lost his job. No matter what, Steen or Urbik are not as good as Pouncey, and at this point of his career, either is Mangold.

  20. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    TIm
Even if mangold can be healthy for 3-4 games I think it’s worth it. In how many previous years are season has unraveled because of injury to oline?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I understand your concerns, just not sure Mangold is the answer. I doubt he wants to play for peanuts at this stage of his career either. We’re not going to offer him big money.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I keep hearing the suggestion on Twitter

I think this is the time of year we get enamored with vets to solve every concern every fan might have

I don’t know that we can expect any moves like that
Not sure it’s make or break 2017 territory

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It would benefit us to have Asiata starting game 1, but have McMillan and Harris come off the bench, with the key being a lit of PT. Asiata starting means has as good as we think, and gives us a good 1st man off the bench in Larsen.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mcmillan coming off the bench means Misi will contribute. Harris coming off the bench means we can use him initially at his strength situational pass rusher, initially.

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’m starting to believe Dolphin fans will suggest building a dirt road to avoid getting hit by a bus on the paved road.

filling out the roster, being prepared for injuries, dealing with injuries and depth in general is a season long and dynamic process

we don’t have to sign every vet out there to cover the chances at a comet hitting. The thing about vets is they are ready to play when you sign them. Its young players that need development. I think right now its more important to invest in young players than anything else. If you sign vets you are taking away snaps from those young guys

FUCKING GOD DAMN IT! I just typed a long ass post and clicked post comment and it tells me “you have to be logged in to post” when I already am and now everything I typed is gone. AAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!! Fuck it. most of you were going to scroll past it anyway.

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ok, reading Piggy’s post above got me to thinking. How many 200 yard games for Ajayi are realistic for this year? How many total rushing yards do you think he will get?

    I’m going to go with:

Total yards rushing – 1,430 or more
    Total 200+ yard games – 2

    Bonus answers (not asked above)
    Total rushing TD’s – 11
    Total Rec yards – 320
    Total Rec TD’s – 2

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

200 yard games are somewhat of a fluke, so I say 0. Not that anyone can do it, but you can’t count in, or worry about it. If the situation of the team and game match it may happen.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      16

      between 3200 – 3400 yards

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I won’t be surprised if Ajayi doesn’t have any 200 yard games. Especially if we plan to use Drake a little more. 200 yards is not a common feat in the NFL. He really had some monster games last season.

  26. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We have had pretty good luck or smart picks in the 5th round the last several year.

    Jones – Pro bowl
    McCane – starter (at nickle)
    Ajayi – Pro bowl

which of our 5th round picks this year do you guys seeing in the pro bowl in the next few years. (if any)

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Probably neither, but if Asiata becomes a quality starter, and Godcheaux is a good rotational/spot starter player, that works for me.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ditto, and again somewhat of a fluke to get a PBer in the 5th. Jones and Ajayi were injury risk dratees, these 2 arent that. Its possible Asiata makes it, but..

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Rock, that happens to me all the time including it would have just happened with this post if I didn’t notice I wasn’t logged in. For some reason I get logged off from time to time so I try to be aware of it. I usually copy what I wrote just in case that happens so I don’t lose what I wrote.

Also after logging in I get you’re not signed in all the time. So I type a . get that message, hit go back, hit refresh and then I’m good to go. I know it sucks when that happens.

  30. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Bleacher Report, which historically has not been kind to the Dolphins had this to say about our off-season grade this year.

The Dolphins had a quiet offseason, at least by their standards.

There was no headline-grabbing signing like when an entire bank was thrown at defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Instead, this new era of Dolphins football under general manager Chris Grier seems to be centered around retaining in-house talent and sprinkling in key free-agent pieces while focusing on the draft. So basically, the team is operating like a well-run organization.

The major in-house extension was safety Reshad Jones, who was given a five-year extension worth $60 million. Grier also made sure to retain rising young wide receiver Kenny Stills. The 25-year-old caught nine touchdown passes in 2016 while also averaging 17.3 yards per reception.

Then Grier went about the business of trying to seal the holes on a gushing run defense that allowed an average of 140.4 yards on the ground per game in 2016. He did that first by signing veteran linebacker Lawrence Timmons, who’s past his prime but has still logged five straight seasons with 100-plus tackles.

And he did it by using his first two picks on linebackers Charles Harris and Raekwon McMillan. Harris terrorized backfields as an edge defender for Missouri, totaling 34.5 tackles for loss and 18 sacks over three seasons. And McMillan was among the draft’s top inside linebackers after recording two seasons with 100-plus tackles at Ohio State.

    Offseason Grade: A

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Harris won’t be a LB for us though, he’ll be a DE, but otherwise he’s got it right.

    • D's avatar D says:

Seems liek though from what im reading that the stem cell therapy can sometimes completely reverse the degeneration and promote healing that can restore past current level, so may actually be able to reverse the damage as well. —————————————–
I think there will definately be times where they stand him up and move him out to the 9 position, whether or not they bring in a another DE to be on the inside and have him in a LB role or whether or not they push Suh out some to rush from the inside shoulder of the OT, i dunno. But i expect to see him rush wide a decent amount. Harris, as i said leading up to the draft, is a lot like Reddick, with exception, that Reddick is more LB that can line up as a DE, and Harris is a DE that can line up as a LB.

So I post about Harris playing Jack LB and a conversation breaks out about the pink thing or pencil as you guys refer to it. So what’s next, we discuss a penetrating DT prospect and we start talking about the red eye or cinnamon roll? LOL

Depends on the DT, some probably incite conversations of Cleveland Steamers while others would be more Tummy Sticks or Red Rockets with report.

LT’s numbers arent even as good as Taylor’s, close and slightly better in some areas but worse in a lot of others. I am not fan of comparing different era players but its impressive to say the least. In LT’s defense, Taylor did have 2 extra years to extend his numbers, but still no doubt why he is in the HOF.

He is 7th all time in sacks, but factoring in his FF’s and FR’s, and TD’s, he is probably more like 5th all time pass rusher.

Demarcus Ware retiring helps keep him at 7th overall sack leader, Ware was just one sack from tying him.

It also makes the 200 and 198 of Bruce Smith and Reggie White even more impressive, though Bruce Smith did do his with 4 extra years of playing time (19 fucking years as a DE, thats some good conditioning). Reggie White did his 198 in same 15 years time as Taylor…. re fucking diculous.

    • D's avatar D says:

Taylors FF are 3rd all time, his sacks are 7th all time, his FR’s are 3rd all time, IMO thats the big three for DE’s.

D, LT started the need for a classic LT. Stats don’t tell his story. He was the greatest defensive player I have ever seen. Teams ran plays away from him constantly. Scott Van Pelt on ESPN has a video talking about the contributions of UDFAs, saying in week 17 30% of the players on the field were undrafted. I don’t get what the big deal is, the draft used to be 15-20 rounds, then dwindled down to like 12, then when FA hit it went down to the current 7, it was something the NFLPA put in giving bubble players a better opportunity to stick on a roster, because they could pick their own team, the one with the best opportunity.

Oh yeah, but LT at 6-3 245 was quicker and more violent. I’d say JT at 6-6 245 was more savvy. But then again you see how quick LT did things with superior moves. He was crazy. My friends and I come from all different team fan bases and we all agree except for the BUF fan (Bruce Smith – great player), that LT is the best we’ve seen.

LT played for my second favorite team

As we noted above, the Dolphins are importing attitude by the truckload. Gase won a stare down during his first season with a notoriously cavalier roster and then added some pop with Harris and McMillan (an all-over linebacker who, to me, seems pretty competent against the pass and fights well against the run). If they’re able to bring Asiata up to speed technically and have him compete for a guard spot this summer, that’s a pretty impressive haul. GRADE: A-

He doesn’t get enough credit for QBing the D. I’ve noticed him worrying more at times what everyone else was doing, in the NFL guys are more compatent. I really had to dig deep on him, but I think he’s the better prospect for us than Cunningham.

    • D's avatar D says:

DBolt, i like hearing that stuff too but so many say it, it almost is as blah to me now as the “im ready to get to work” that seems they are coached to say, and the “ill play anywhere they want me to, i just want to help the team.” That part wasnt as revealing to me as some of the other stuff because they all kinda feel that way, or at least most of them do. Im sure all the guys we drafted would say they were, but his interview in general is pretty impressive, this seems like a business type dude. If you see Suh and the way he talks and plays, and how he plays like a mad man, and out pouring of passion a lot of times on the field, but they interview him and its almost like he has a puppet in his head that just very professionally and business like conducts that part, then next game, beast is unleashed. When i see a high performing player who is so low key off the field, or nonchalant like Wake is, you know you are dealing with one of those guys.

Those are the players that i love (especially as OL and DL guys) because i can really relate to them and their passion to play football. I had a monster inside me that during football season i got to let out to play. I made every snap in games be an assault on whomever stood in my way of doing what i needed to do, on either offense or defense. I might not have blown up my own guys in practice like that but i only tempered it a little because i also believe practice hard makes you play hard. In those games though, I didn’t just see a opponent across from me i saw someone i hated, someone that needed to be destroyed. End of the game, i put that monster back in its cage, and returned to being as nice a person as i could, and hell in between snaps i kept the monster at bay and would help an opponent up, and conducted myself ethically. I was in control of it, but i also really relished in letting him loose too.

Ill have to see if Raekwon turns out to be one of those guys, but there is something about how he handles himself in that interview that makes me suspect he might be.

  91. D's avatar D says:

Raekwon’s interview is pretty solid too. Really straight forward kid, i can see why they said everything he does it very almost business like, not emotional. He looks like a little baby though lol, i mean some 20 year olds look like full grown men, but he has a really young looking face and body build, he is probably still growing so i think he can build up his frame a good bit. Really funny story about him accidentally hanging up on the Phins when they first called him bacause he was texting his brother who had texted him previously to say he was going to be the Phins pick at 54, call came in from the Phins an he accidentally clicked off of it instead of switching to it and he kinda got paniced thinking he had just missed his chance to be drafted by us lol.

When you do things the right way, regarding player acquisitions, ideally you don’t want rookies starting, unless of course a stud falls in your lap, or one gives you no choice. When they grade this draft, the ones that get it give us a high grade and mention it.

    • D's avatar D says:

I dont think you can expect it, but you cant deny them the chance either. These guys will have to come out and earn what they get and if they earn a right to start i dont care if they were a 7th, or UDFA, or whatever, they should get to start, and if they dont and they just need more time to develop, then have some patience with them and give them all the opportunity to get there.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree with you D 100%. There are rookies who earn starting spots on good teams. If they prove worthy, no reason to hold them back

  94. D's avatar D says:

Taylors hands are big, that will help him with that initial punch, along with his good strength numbers from BP combine, but those hands should help him shed guys, and i think i read somewhere that is one of his strengths. He probably needs to work on his lower body strength, i hear his is weak there, but his interview was very solid too. You can tell a lot about these guys just by how genuine the answers are and so far 3 for 3, very geniune sounding guys, answer their questions without looking like they are searching for the answer they were given in preparation for the interview.

  95. D's avatar D says:

Tankersly interview was solid too, not really as revealing i think as what i picked up from some of the others, he’s kinda another kinda cool cat guy but he seems pretty happy to be here, he seems personable and excited, and i think very genuine in what he said. I liked his anecdote about bouncing back from their adversity in last years championship year and then putting things back together to finish strong and win it.

  96. D's avatar D says:

Asiata interview is the best one. Hands down. I get a really good vibe from him, both from a smart football player perspective to the nasty guy underneath thing i mentioned above. I hope everything works out like i think it will for him and he goes on to be one of our best OL pickups ever. He seems to LOVE that he plays for us and Gase.

Lol Charles Harris said that he thinks that Gase is really cool, a laid back guy but you can tell he has that other side to him as well “that he could snap on you”. Pretty good evaluation id say lol. He talks really fast, seems pretty intense, but controlled. Again, same theme as before, very genuine, shared personal stuff, seems really excited to be there and play for the Phins, no really rehearsed statements about things, very good interview.
