Yessir! Back to Football!
Man, I’d much rather hear back to football than back to school. Still to this day, hearing back to school depresses me, and I’ve been out of school for a very long time, thousands of years. On the other hand, MIAMI DOLPHINS FOOTBALL is BACK!!! Training camp is ON!
This training camp should really be an interesting one to watch. There are a few important positions up for grabs, and one that just cropped up due to Koa Misi being placed on IR. Before Misi was even placed on IR, an intriguing battle was to take place on the O-line, presumably at LG, with Laremy Tunsil now the LT, Pouncey possibly ready to return to C, Jermon Bushrod set to play RG, and Ju’Wuan James set at RT. Who will win the LG spot? Ted Larsen, Anthony Steen, Kraig Urbik, OR, the fan favorite rookie 5th RD pick Isaac Asiata?
The other important battle will be between Neville Hewitt and rookie 2nd RD pick Raekwon McMillan at OLB. This is one I can’t wait to see. CB is another highly contested area of competition, especially now that we’ve added veteran CB Alterraun Verner, who is likely going to give nickel corner Bobby McCain his moneys worth. Besides the nickel corner, at this point, I still think there is competition for starting spots at CB, between likely favorite and incumbent Byron Maxwell, 2nd year Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, and even rookie 2nd RD pick Cordrea Tankersley. We haven’t had this kind of depth at CB, well, in a long time.
Defensive tackle should be fun to watch, although we know Ndumakong Suh and Jordan Phillips will be the starters, the depth will definitely be up for grabs, with newly acquired Lawrence Okoye, and rookie draftees Davon Godchaux (RD5) and Vincent Taylor (RD6), as well as possibly Julius Warmsley, who may be working out at DE. Will there be a late veteran pickup, or do we go with youngins?
Another aspect that really has me interested is the other safety spot, meaning not Reshad Jones’ spot. Yes, Jones tweaked sumpin’ the other day, but I’m thinking he’ll be fine, but what of Nate Allen and suspended for 8 games T.J. McDonald? Do we get any competition there, knowing McDonald must miss the first 8 games? If not, can Nate Allen return to the promise he showed early in his career with Philadelphia?
Many questions, and of course, will OC Mike Pouncey be healthy enough to participate in TC, and if so, does he make it through healthy enough to play this season? Does Devante Parker finally emerge as a premier receiver? Does star Jarvis Landry sign a big contract before the season? Does RB Kenyan Drake really share carries with Jay Ajayi, or is he just going to spell him? Is Ryan Tannehill really 100%, and if so, does he ascend to the upper echelon of QB’s, surrounded by significant talent this season on offense, easily our best offensive roster in quite some time. Does Julius Thomas make us forget about Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims, and maybe become Randy McMichael or Keith Jackson or better for us?
Some of these questions will be answered in training camp, others will continue through the preseason and possibly even the beginning of the season, while others will finally be answered by seasons end. Looking forward to it all!
Go DOLPHINS!! Zero in!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again… Ajayi’s very aggressive running-style makes him susceptible to receiving big hits. My concern in citing as much was his ‘bone-on-bone’ knee. I honestly hadn’t taken concussions into consideration, foolishly.
Let’s hope it’s not a concussion… we’ve seen how that story can play out over time (DT3 comes to mind, among many others). But even if it is a concussion, all is not lost, of course. But my immediate concern would be: how many concussions may he have sustained at Boise State with that running-style of his? And remember… not all concussions are reported by the player (and sometimes not by the team –> ILLEGAL).
My fingers are crossed that Ajayi didn’t get a concussion… he’s about to become a SUPERSTAR.
Concussions can happen to any positional player.
Concussions can happen to ANY player on the gridiron, but that’s not my point. Ajayi is going to be a STUD and I really hope he isn’t going down the road of a regularly concussed player. A trend always starts with 1, thus I hope 1 didn’t happen.
Of course. I don’t think it’s his running style though.
Tim Knight says:

———
I’ll tell ya this… I wouldn’t ask Ajayi to EVER change his running-style. If it works, it WORKS: he’s the next “Beast Mode”. It is what it is, so we’re left to hope he hasn’t sustained a concussion today.
I’ve got VERY high hopes for Ajayi, Brother!
So do I. Look at my avi. 🙂
YUP, YUP! 🙂
I see there are some fans thinking that Tannehill sucks because he’s thrown 4 INTs in 5 days of camp (2 to Kiko, alone). Well if that translates to the regular season (4 INTs in 5 days), he’ll be on pace to throw 12-13 INTs on the year (or approximately his career low).
What’s more? The Defense is ALWAYS the more dominant unit in early training camp. Tanny is looking NICE thus far, especially coming off of his injury and with Julius Thomas working strictly on his in-line blocking to date.
It’s also practice. We have no idea what guys are working on. Just like I don’t get too high about TDs I don’t get too down about INTs either. Gase is also asking Tanny to get it out and don’t think too much. Practice is not the performance. That said don’t we want our defense to make plays as well?
Therein lies the hate for Tannehill… can’t we be happy that we have one of the very best coverage LBs in Kiko Alonso?
I’M WITH YA!!! 🙂
Plain and simple only one throw has been called a forced bad throw out of those picks, Alonso’s 2nd one. There were 2 due to miscommunication between RT, Ajayi/Landry. Also Gase said it last year that he wanted Ryan to force certain throws on plays vs certain coverages to see if it could be successful or not. TC is about experimenting while honing your craft.
M13, like what I’m hearing about McMillan. He’s definitely a front runner as the 3rd LB. Been lining up a lot as the Mike. Impressive for such a young guy. The team definitely targeted him in the draft for the way we play defense. It’s not just about being a thumper, but a guy who gets the game and knows where to be. Most scouts said he’s a guy who does the things right but not sure about his upside to be special. At 20 years old I think it’s way too early for anyone to really come to that conclusion.
I’ve been of the mindset you’re getting a high level David Harris with this kid. Said it way before Armando said that’s who he reminded Miami’s front office of. Meaning you’re looking at someone who will be in pro bowl contention almost every year. Also being as mentally savvy as it has been reported might push him higher than what we’ve seen from Harris.
+10000000000
And if you want to talk about McMillan, Dbolt is the one who called him to us Phins. MAJOR props to Dbolt!
I like what I’m hearing/seeing from McMillan as well.
Yes he was definitely a dbolt guy but I mentioned his as well when most people were talking about 4-5 other LBs. I wasn’t surprised when we drafted him. Lead a big time program in tackles two years in a row and won a championship and he’s only 20.
Was just the LB I thought we needed. Physical, smart, & ,opposed to what some tried to claim, athletic. Hopefully he keeps his head on straight and stays as professional as he’s shown since after his junior year of high school.
Nice job Mike E.
It’s just practice. I dont care who does what as long as they dont get injured….
Hope Ajayi is quick to heal.
+1000000000000, ER!
Dbolt,
I hope you have a GRAND time in sunny Florida, Brother! Take some pics and post them, will ya?! It’s been some time since I’ve been to the Sunshine State. And as always, SAFE JOURNEY to you and yours.
LOL…I don’t really post photos but I will have fun.
dbolt, Harris is impressing everyone especially his fellow DL. Our top two picks are going to play a bunch of snaps this season. 🙂
It’s a nice combo we added on defense. One guy who can be a real demon off the edge and a LB who can cover some ground and tackle.
Yes, Harris was another kid who came off as mentally mature where it will only help him grow into a quality pro quicker.
Harris and McMillan are both students of the game. They are probably going to be future leaders of the defense.
One thing about Timmons playing outside is he’s a good blitzer/pass rusher and has played all over at LB with PIT in a 3-4 scheme. I think we’ll see some different alignments throughout the season. Like Alonso, he’s simply a LB, not only a this or that kind of guy.
I like the fact he’ll get a clean run to build up momentum to deliver hits.
In a ‘wide 9’ 4-3 the OLBs are still inside the box most of the time so they attack gaps inside the DEs and get one on ones. That’s the concept, spread out hat on hat. It seems they want to work McMillan as the Mike because they know Alonso and Timmons can play anywhere. I also see Hewitt helping in nickel and Hull as a backup Mike with both as core STs guys. That seems to be our game day 5 LBs. Who else steps up?
How many do you want Tim? If those 5 get it done, it will be more depth than we’ve ever had at LB, a year after having the worst LBs maybe in team history as a unit.
Steve, I meant we probably keep only 6 LBs when we’ll be in nickel with just 2 half the time if not more. It’s early but I think this is where it’s headed barring injury. I don’t know who 6 is yet. That’s all.
Got it

Miami Dolphins lose the draft choice acquired in Branden Albert deal due to retirement
You owe a case of beer. LOL
Working nights so I get a pass!
A 7th rounder for Juilus Thomas? he was a stud in Denver, if he plays anywhere close to that he’s worth a first, I think Jax’s offensive philosophy and the inaccuracy of Bortles may have played a roll in his decline. i’m excited to see if Gase can bring him back to the Denver level of productivity. he can be a great red zone threat along with Parker.
A lot of mediocre pass catchers put up stud like numbers playing with Peyton Manning.
another great pick-up was TJ Mcdonald, he’s the one who hit ajayi and gave him a concussion. a big hitting safety from the Rams, i’m sure he will come in very handy the last 8 games of the season
I think Miami is looking into picking up another running back with the same skill set as Ajayi, one name that surfaced was DeAngelo Williams
He’s a little long in the tooth, but he can play well if not asked to do too much. At this point, he’s got to split carries, he can’t be the workhorse.
This is such a refreshing change from Philbin who even when players were still on the team, if they were injured or were not active for a game would not be allowed to travel with the team or be on the sidelines!
GO GASE!!!
From the Palm Beach Post:
“DAVIE — Former Miami Dolphins safety Isa Abdul-Quddus had his career end due to a neck/shoulder nerve injury last season, but there he was on Monday, observing from the edge of the practice field.
Abdul-Quddus has been helping Miami’s defensive backs, including free-agent additions T.J. McDonald and Nate Allen, the safeties signed to take his spot opposite Pro Bowler Reshad Jones.
“(Abdul-Quddus) is helpful to be around,” McDonald said Monday. “He’s the one on the film right now that we were watching from last year. He’s got experience in this system, so having him in the meeting room definitely helps and he was out there on the sideline today and things like that. Having him in the room, someone who’s been there, someone who’s done it in this system, is definitely helpful.”
In March, the Dolphins waived Abdul-Quddus at the age of 27 due to a failed physical. Abdul-Quddus’ effectively career ended on a Christmas Eve play at Buffalo.
The Palm Beach Post reported then that Abdul-Quddus was not expected to be able to play football again. But coach Adam Gase and the Dolphins organization have been very supportive of Abdul-Quddus’ continued involvement with the team.
Fans love it when you bring in guys like Taylor or Thomas for a day……bet the players like a move like this even more. If Isa is interested in coaching, this is great experience for him. And even if no spot for us, good to talk about in interviews with interviews for college spots or other teams. Gase takes care of his own.
I thought that was Parcell’s that didn’t allow injured players on the Sidelines?
You may be right Jetsuck, but I seem to recall the same under Philbin.
getting old sucks. What is Philbin doing now a days?
I think he’s head of the sanitation dept. in Indiana. lol
Actually, he’s the O-line coach and assistant head coach for the Colts
Any news on Ajayi?
“I think it is a competitive football team, on the right track. Hell of a head coach in Adam Gase.”
— Jason La Canfora
I’ve seen a couple of articles where people are questioning the hitting in camp, because of Ajayi’s concussion. They’re not playing pattycake out there, it’s a contact sport. If you can’t practice with contact, how can you expect them to do it when it counts?
Was just reading that T.J. McDonald was the one who did (and am sure he is trying to make a statement before he goes away), but it wasn’t even on a live go.
“Yes, we had a couple periods – a couple live periods – that wasn’t live, though. I was just trying to thud him up and do my job. It’s always good to have contact and it is football, so it’s going to happen.”
That’s the dammed if you do dammed if you don’t argument.
agreed
It’s silly really. If a baseball player gets hit in the eye after a ground ball takes a bad hop, does that mean there should be no more infield practice?
Guys get hurt during light practices without being hit. So no more running and cutting, just save it for the game. Silly!
Think I put this out years ago….but coached the softball team in the summer camp worked out and our star was so much better than the rest. I’d lazy them out to the rest and hit them to him like he was a high school all star and he’d eat them up better than I could. One day one hit a rock popped up and broke his nose…..and then I took him to the hospital. Thank god his parents didn’t sue. They would have won.
Barnwell surprised by naming our skills set top 3 in the league, but apparently he is not done with us yet. Names us #3 most likely to regress from last year after the Raiders and Texans.
“Take the teams that finished with the 10 worst records in football, the ones that (ignoring trades) would have occupied the top 10 spots in the 2017 draft. Miami went 8-1 against those teams, winning seven of those games by seven points or fewer.”
“They spent all kinds of money this offseason to bring back as much of their playoff team as possible, which seems totally reasonable if you look at the roster like it’s a true 10-win team, but not so much if they’re closer to the 7.5-win figure that Pythagoras suggests.”
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/20199657/nfl-teams-likely-improve-decline-2017-season-bill-barnwell-pythagorean-expectation
Is that tool at it again, his logic us flawed. Other good teams that had that many injuries finished around 6-10.
He seems to have an opinion, then messes around with the stats until the 2 come together. His line about previous having 108 wins vs the expected 107.8 is horseshit. He likely went back X amount of years with X number of teams to get something close.
Who the fuck is this Pythagoras guy anyway? The fucker lived and died before football was even invented. What the fuck does he know?
They have no idea what this year’s roster will look like or how the team responds in year two under Gase. Last year has nothing to do with anything.

How did Barnwell make the ESPN layoff cut?
So, I want to get your guys advice as I cannot make up my own mind.
I am going to Mexico instead of the Fest (as you know) I am trying to book my flights and there are no direct flights out of west palm beach (closest airport 15 mins from my house) or Ft. Laud. (1hr from my house) but there are direct flights out of miami (2 hr drive from my house)
The flights out of Miami will get me there in a little over 2 hours. I will have to figure out a way to get too and from the airport (again 2 hour drive and pay for that some way, whether it is Uber or taking the train) The flight out of Miami will cost me about $500.00 and it would be a coach seat. (no room torture seat) but it is only a 2 hour flight
OR
I have a voucher from a cancelled trip at work worth $900 but I have to fly Delta who does not fly direct out of Fl to Mex. I would have to fly 2 hours north to ATL have a 2-6 hour layover (depending on which airport I leave from and what flight I pick) and have a 3.5 hour flight to Mex. 5.5 hours flying plus layover, but only 15 mins from house and could get a friend to drop me off.. About 8 hours total travel time. (as apposed to 4.5 or so with the drive to miami)
But with the voucher I can pay $167.00 more out of my pocket and fly FIRST CLASS both ways. I have never flown first class. I would be an all day friken thing, but first class. OR I could pay $333 more out of pocket and only travel half as long but in the torture seats.
What should I do?
Cancel the Mexico trip and go to the Fest instead. I think that’s pretty obvious . . .
Be safe in Mexico, I heard it’s getting dangerous for tourists.
As for your question, no fucking idea! LOL
Miami’s Wilcox field=Miami international airport….. I prefer to fly out of Fort Lauderdale but Miami is not that bad now a days. They just completed the latest security enhancements and it may be on par for safety as Istanbul.
If you can fly 1st class by all means do it,.everyone should once in their life’s. Now if you want to take the shortest time then I would take a valium or 2 and you won’t notice the cramped seats.
Fly first class. The shorter trip can end up being a wash if there are any delays.
Punt
“8 hours total travel time. (as apposed to 4.5 or so with the drive to miami)”…..that would be my answer right there, especially if those extra hours come with more on spot vacation time.
thanks for your input guys.
Brian, you have a point. my travel plans ALWAYS get screwed up. I have NEVER been a a flight that departed and landed on time. (and I fly almost every week)
Jetssuck, I have never flown 1st class but I HATE Miami. (the roads & traffic not the football team)
I think I am going to go with the “cheaper” first class option even though it takes twice as long.
Mike E, Fuck off. LOL! JK I’ll miss you guys this year.
I do not fly out until the 22nd at noon if I take the first class option. Perhaps I will drop by D&B the night before and razz you guys. (And drop off a trilogy or two for Mike E)
Come by for sure Rock, I think I have all the books now, thanks my man!

Saints cut OL Orlando Franklin after five days
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000823904/article/new-orleans-saints-cut-orlando-franklin-after-five-days?campaign=Twitter_atn …
———
WOW!!!
He’s considered to be on the decline. He’s just a name at this point. A guy who had a few good years but that seems to be about it.
Seems we have the answer as to why we (Gase) didn’t get after Franklin. Still, I’d like to know what happened there in New Orleans. Waived/injured? Altercation? Bad attitude? Broke the rules? Can’t believe he got cut before the cut from 90 even happened.
He was cut from his lucrative deal and available for quite some time in FA. Teams know more than we do. There is an NFL grapevine.
So as far as our OL goes it seems to be Tunsil at LT, Larsen at LG, Urbik at C, Bushrod at RG and James at RT. When Pouncey is ready he’ll be back at C and Urbik will be one of the backups with 7 on game day. There have been reports that Urbik has played well at center this offseason. Once again it’s about durability with this group. There is good talent on our OL.
Tim,
Even if Orlando Franklin isn’t the answer for us, I’m still skeptical (like others are) about our O-Line. I’ve been wrong many times in the past and I’ll be wrong many more times again, but our team’s success is contingent upon our O-Line… both run-blocking (good last year) and pass-protection (meh, last year).
IMO, we can hopefully find a gem or two when other teams trim their rosters to their final 53. We’ll see. If not, oh well… I’m learning to TRUST Adam Gase.
I still say sign Mangold. Long as he is willing to give G a shot if it comes to it at least.
I DO believe that Nick Mangold is Tannenbaum’s ‘Trump card’, should Pouncey regress.
Maybe, I think the team likes a lot of our guys more than the media and fans. Like I said, teams know more than we do. There is an NFL grapevine. If we’re looking for players to get cut to make the OL work, then the people responsible for personnel did a bad job. Until we see it, I can’t evaluate just based on names and past history. Starting 5’s are a unique thing. The team doesn’t seem to be in any kind of panic mode. Probably a bit anxious with Pouncey. Right now I think these are the guys we’re going with. We’ll see.

So sorry, brother. I feel your pain.
Thank you, Tim… and I KNOW that you do feel that pain, more so than most in recent years. You’re a good man, my friend.
Fuck cancer indeed.
My best Friend has stage 4 lung cancer, and has been diagnosed with it since the summer of 2013, he has had radiation, chemo and immune therapy, he is in remission for the second time, Fingers Crossed! i think 5% of stage 4 patients live past 5 years of diagnosis, those figures are prior to all the new treatments such as immune therapy which seems to be the leading treatment for cancer these days. with a clean scan just recently i’m sure my friend will pass the 5 year mark.
I may have just dodged a major bullet. They caught oral cancer on me very early. It appears they got it all on the biopsy. Routine teeth cleaning may have saved my life
My point is don’t neglect routine medical appointments and check ups
Yeh F cancer. Tried four times with my parents won once. And awesome you are undefeated, with blow out win to boot.
Mangold had two ankle injuries his last season when the Jets put him on IR and then released him. He may not be a guy who teams consider to be ready to play. He’s still available for a reason. Urbik has had a good camp thus far. Don’t get caught up in Mangold the pro bowler. He’s not that guy at this time and probably never. If you can’t move you can’t play.

i doubt mangold is even in consideration, they are rotating Steen Brendel and Urbik with first team reps, i believe if Mangold were an option he’d be there at this point in TC.
I believe Larson may be our starting LG, looks like he’s beating out Asiata.
It’s unlikely, but if he was willing to play G he would start and be real good insurance for Pouncey.
I just think that if Miami were going to go in that direction he would already be in TC, JMO.
ORob, agreed.
Takes two to tango. Think Mangold is looking for that last go for a ring. So he might just be waiting for injuries to come up on a team like that with us as a serious plan B……especially if playing G is what he does not want. But my top choice for a move like that is interior line.

Interesting comment from Tanny…….Gase is testing folks in camp.
—————————-
“Early in training camp Coach Gase wants me to push myself. Take chances. And test my limits. Test our receiver’s limits. Find those boundaries. The closer we get to games the more we’ll tighten things up. And start you know protecting the football a little bit more. But right now we’re in the part of the preseason when we’re finding those boundaries. We’re figuring out what those boundaries are. And we want to push the limits.”
You cant take it to the next level without extending yourself, and besides it’s practice, we’re talking about practice. Seems like the media is trying to sensationalized again.
If the defense had no INTs it would be reported that they suck. LOL

Happy Birthday Larmy Tunsil & Jordan Lucas!
This is cute.
From Andy Cohen’s fan questions
Q. Andy, enough of the X’s and O’s and position battles, can you add a little human touch to training camp for those fans like me who live out of town? @cindimorgan89
AC: Sure. I watched Ryan Tannehill spend 30 minutes the other day after practice walking down the middle of two lines of the cutest little kids. He signed his name to shirts, hats, footballs, you name it, and then there was this little girl who kept pulling at his jersey. “No. 17,” she said. “My dad says you’re going to be my hero someday.” Tannehill simply looked up, smiled and, with a large dose of sincerity said: “I can hardly wait.”
Way better than “No. 17, my dad says you suck and calls you Tannebust. He says you can’t read defenses, have no pocket presence and can’t throw the deep ball”
Tanny is just a good dude, but then so were Fiedler, Beck and Henne. Like it or not….not many out of shape Victoria supermodels either. He has more potential than any of them though.
He’s already better than all of those guys.
You know what’s crazy. The Jets possible starting QB in 2017 is Josh McCown. He was going to be our starter in 2008 unless rookie Chad Henne beat him out. Then we got Pennington when the Jets released him and went all in with Favre. We made the playoffs that year knocking off the Jets and the rest is history.
Better as in QB or better as in being nice? I thought Beck was about the nicest guy you would ever want to meet. Awesome full circle on Josh McCown though. Seems he has figured out how to make money the Matt Moore way……and that is a real good living.
Better player. They’ll all good guys.

SOME REALLY GREAT NEWS; Went to my scheduled pre-op meeting with my lumbar surgeon late this afternoon. I expected to discuss more details of my pending surgery (Aug. 15). However the discussion turned in a different direction. He told me how impressed he was with my recuperative powers “for a man my age.” And he was pleasantly surprised that I had ditched the walker about a dozen days ago. He gave me a few specific instructions and said that if I make another 6-7 days with no major lower back problems, he’d put the surgery alternative on the back burner!! I’ll give you more details some other time but, to say the least, I was flabbergasted and delighted! But, as of now, if I have 6-7 more good days, there will be no surgery for me in the near future.

You folks have a terrific evening!
Good for you. Those dog walks are good therapy.
One word:
Storm Johnson !!!!!
Good receiver like Williams, but he can bang inside
He made Blake Bortles – Blake Bortles
(I don’t know what that means either)
Would that be the 5 ints in one practice Bortles?
Lol at one word😁
Forrest Gore – LMFAO
Which Dolphin is known as black ice?
Speaking of storm, I’m sitting outside waiting for it to hit, lighting all around.

Ryan Tannehill headed to the locker room with trainers. Walking gingerly.
Hope he’s alright. I was never really convinced his knee was 100%, but at this point, we don’t even know if it was the knee or not, I’m just assuming

No one hit Tannehill. He simply stepped awkwardly once he hit the sideline.

Weird how I just had a conversation w/ @fantasyEK about the prospect of Kaepernick landing in Miami if something happened to Tannehill.
No fucking way.

Trainer who left withTannehill comes out of building and gives coach Adam Gase a report. No idea what that is. No obvious reaction by Gase.
That’s not a good sign, that Gase didn’t react.
