Training Camp and other tidbits

Yessir!  Back to Football!

Man, I’d much rather hear back to football than back to school.  Still to this day, hearing back to school depresses me, and I’ve been out of school for a very long time, thousands of years.  On the other hand, MIAMI DOLPHINS FOOTBALL is BACK!!!  Training camp is ON!

This training camp should really be an interesting one to watch.  There are a few important positions up for grabs, and one that just cropped up due to Koa Misi being placed on IR.  Before Misi was even placed on IR, an intriguing battle was to take place on the O-line, presumably at LG, with Laremy Tunsil now the LT, Pouncey possibly ready to return to C, Jermon Bushrod set to play RG, and Ju’Wuan James set at RT.    Who will win the LG spot?  Ted Larsen, Anthony Steen, Kraig Urbik, OR, the fan favorite rookie 5th RD pick Isaac Asiata?

The other important battle will be between Neville Hewitt and rookie 2nd RD pick Raekwon McMillan at OLB.  This is one I can’t wait to see.  CB is another highly contested area of competition, especially now that we’ve added veteran CB Alterraun Verner, who is likely going to give nickel corner Bobby McCain his moneys worth.  Besides the nickel corner, at this point, I still think there is competition for starting spots at CB, between likely favorite and incumbent Byron Maxwell, 2nd year Xavien Howard, Tony Lippett, and even rookie 2nd RD pick Cordrea Tankersley.  We haven’t had this kind of depth at CB, well, in a long time.

Defensive tackle should be fun to watch, although we know Ndumakong Suh and Jordan Phillips will be the starters,  the depth will definitely be up for grabs, with newly acquired Lawrence Okoye, and rookie draftees Davon Godchaux (RD5) and Vincent Taylor (RD6), as well as possibly Julius Warmsley, who may be working out at DE.  Will there be a late veteran pickup, or do we go with youngins?

Another aspect that really has me interested is the other safety spot, meaning not Reshad Jones’ spot.  Yes, Jones tweaked sumpin’ the other day, but I’m thinking he’ll be fine, but what of Nate Allen and suspended for 8 games T.J. McDonald?  Do we get any competition there, knowing McDonald must miss the first 8 games?  If not, can Nate Allen return to the promise he showed early in his career with Philadelphia?

Many questions, and of course, will OC Mike Pouncey be healthy enough to participate in TC, and if so, does he make it through healthy enough to play this season?  Does Devante Parker finally emerge as a premier receiver?  Does star Jarvis Landry sign a big contract before the season? Does RB Kenyan Drake really share carries with Jay Ajayi, or is he just going to spell him?  Is Ryan Tannehill really 100%, and if so, does he ascend to the upper echelon of QB’s, surrounded by significant talent this season on offense, easily our best offensive roster in quite some time.  Does Julius Thomas make us forget about Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims, and maybe become Randy McMichael or Keith Jackson or better for us?

Some of these questions will be answered in training camp, others will continue through the preseason and possibly even the beginning of the season, while others will finally be answered by seasons end.  Looking forward to it all!

Go DOLPHINS!!  Zero in!

Tannehill was full-go for practice as he continues adjusting to the knee brace he’s been wearing the past few months. He was agile, as he was throughout Organized Team Activities and minicamp, and was sharp on all his medium and short passes in receiver drills.

See! he still can’t throw the deep ball! 😉

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

–Based on today’s lineups, it looks like the Dolphins are working with a tentative offensive line of Laremy Tunsil at left tackle, Ted Larsen at left guard, Jermon Bushrod at right guard and Ja’Wuan James at right tackle. That would suggest they want to move forward with Larsen at guard rather than keep him in consideration to fill in for Pouncey at center. Kraig Urbik, who took over late last season, took a lot of reps with the first-string line today. Anthony Steen, who started seven games last season, was with the second group.

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

–Return man Jakeem Grant got some work at slot receiver today and took a quick pass all the way to the end zone against rookie cornerback Cordrea Tankersley.

Best play at camp: Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill kicked off training camp in grand fashion. His first throw in team drills was a jump ball to wide receiver DeVante Parker, who leaped over cornerback Xavien Howard for the touchdown. Parker is expected to make a jump in Year 3, and this was a good start and strong first practice for the former No. 14 overall pick.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s only TC but I read he hit Parker twice for TDs both 30+ yards.

Consistency is the key for me from a lot of our players. The more players playing well on a consistent basis the better our chances are in winning a lot of games. I know it sounds obvious, but I’m saying it because we have quite a bit of talent. If we didn’t, it wouldn’t matter as much. If you’re not that talented you’re not going to play well or consistently well regardless of what you do. Get it, got it, good! 🙂

  48. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Miami #3

If coach Adam Gase can get something out of Julius Thomas, who scored 24 touchdowns in two years for him in Denver, this offense could be unstoppable. They’re not all going to break out unless the Dolphins get to play with two footballs, but there’s so much talent to go around that Miami won’t have to depend on any one player to have a big season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what Gase is building here. No one player to lean on, too many mismatches for opponents to deal with.

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Jahn, the abundance of great whites is likely due to more conservation and seal populations. Warmer water temps also play a role. I really would like to witness one on a boat one of these days.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was watching a show on sharks about a month ago, and that’s exactly what they were saying. It’s the seals, and the warmer waters in the usually colder waters. It was a great show, and it was in 4K , which made it even better.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Not for the seals it wasn’t.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

At first the seals were impressed with the better tech, but once the sharks came, it all went out the window.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! I’m not sure of all areas but I know NJ and specifically MA have growing seal populations. Great whites are known to migrate from Florida to MA. NJ has been said to be a breeding ground.

      • Jahndoh30's avatar Jahndoh30 says:

And Loria’s shady moves with the Marlins screwed Ross on his stadium plans. Payback can be a biotch.
    —————————————-
“Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross, who explored purchasing the Miami Marlins last year, says the sale price is too high and he’s no longer interested. Owner Jeffrey Loria has been publicly shopping the Marlins but hasn’t found a buyer. Loria is seeking about $1.2 billion after buying the team for $158.5 million in 2002. • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

By the way the key to this isn’t just experience, it’s Gase being in Tannehill’s corner. I was really disappointed when we found out Philbin really wasn’t. Yet he built his offense to throw 40 times and rush 20. Yeah that made a lot of sense.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

That was a good article. Amazing what happens when you empower your field generals. It’s not just Ryan….Gase has empowered all of his players!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! Dan Marino said he got off to a fast start because Shula force-fed him the playbook and encouraged him to call his own plays based on what he sees. That was not the case during the Philbin era. Gase forming a relationship with his QB and building trust between the two has been the difference.

Yesterday the Offense started fast and got the best of the Defense well today according to Coach Gase the Defense made it very difficult for the Offense. He said the front seven took away the run very effectively.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

well based upon last years performance that is encouraging (for the defense) but it is a two sided sword because we are practicing against ourselves. if we can’t run, is it the Oline is sub par or is it the front 7 playing better.

I’m going with the Koolaid view (as usual) and say yay the D is getting better!

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

regarding the LB group and where they are playing. Our DC said during OTA’s that their plan is to move them around a lot and perhaps not have set Will, Sam, Mike positions going into the season. (but he played coy while saying it.) I think at this point they are experimenting to see how much each can handle and what groupings seem to work best. there is also some cross training in case of injury involved.

Just like they have done with the OL the past few years. I don’t think we can read anything into it on day 2. The pads go on tomorrow so they will be in the next step then to see who shines.

  69. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I’m not going to be concerned about Timmons playing OLB….still less ground overall to cover. Very happy to see Raekwon is handling making the calls effortlessly on the D in only his second practice. Glad to see a 20yr old being a true pro.

Yeah he seems like he’s all upside. I’m looking forward to watching him. Hopefully he brings to the Defense what Jarvis brought to the Offense.

      • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

Yep. Honestly looking forward to tomorrow’s practice reports as they’ll be wearing shoulder pads. Should get a better feel for those defensive rookies good or bad. Can they get off blocks when the OL have something to latch onto

Gase on Grant: ““He’s doing extremely on both. He really takes a lot of pride on special teams. I could tell the couple of drops he had last year really bothered him. On offense, he’s really making a huge jump for us. We just want to put him in position to make plays.”

Gotta think that being a scary option to trot out on O at times can only help Grant. And reports he is working on both slot and boundary routes.

I’m not sure Grant makes this team with the arrival of Ford??

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ford wasn’t impressive in mini camp, but he has plenty of time to impress with training camp and preseason

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

that can only be a good thing. if he beats out Grant, then we have the better player in place. If Grant beats him out he can still be on the 53 or stashed on the PS.

  80. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This line from an article in the PBP really got me thinking.

“Stills returns as the oldest (25), most experienced (five seasons) and highest-paid receiver ($32 million over four years) the Dolphins have. He took on a leadership role last season and still holds that position among the receiver group.”

Man we really do have a young team. If they can start clicking on all cylinders and keep it together for the through a few years we can be something special.

anyone going to the football practice tonight at the stadium they are expecting 50,000 plus for tonight and ticket are only $200-300 and they have a soldout stadium for the pre season game tomorrow night.Their are several hundred left of the extra seats they added and they are being discounted to $300-400.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

      ??? Huh?

The practice at the stadium is next week on Saturday I believe. The first preseason game (home game at least) is August 10th. I have tickets to that one.

Ellerbe in the trade to the Saints was a throw in, the real compensation was a 3rd rounder.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

That’s true but we made out pretty good on that one.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What was also thrown in was Ellerbe’s contract. Best thing we got out of another similar deal was Kiko.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Ellerbe was goi g to be cut, so what he did with the Saints has no bearing on us.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But they took over his contract and saved us cap by doing so and we got two years of Stills on his rookie contract. Sometimes it is more than just players involved in a trade.

  84. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Every time I read something about Shady McCoy I get pissed that the Eagles gave him to the Bills, then i remind myself that we don’t get Alonso without Shady going to the Bills, and all is well.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And Byron Maxwell, too. If Maxwell picks up where he left off last year, he’s going to be very good for us. And should that come to fruition, what are we going to do with his $10M salary next year? I’d extend him and backload the contract. If he’s just ‘meh’ this season, buh-bye.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He’s making $8.5M this season so $10M isn’t that big of a deal if he’s playing well. We’ll see. We’ve also been loading up on young corners so we have a backup plan.

  85. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Looks like the Cowboys and Ravens have had the worst offseasons, between suspensions and injuries, respectively.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t get too caught up in who’s playing where at LB. The coaches and Grier have said they view Alonso and Timmons as LBs who can play anywhere. Maybe at some point they’ll be more defined, but again not a big deal.

    ———
I hear ya, but next year is his OUT year ($0 dead cap). What I’m trying to say is that unless he balls this year, he’s likely gone. And should he ball, I’d not want to part with him. As you said, we’ll see.

Same thing applies to Ja’Wuan James’ contract in ’18… he’d better earn those $$$ this year or he’s likely gone as well.

I’m not trying to put the cart before the horse, just sayin’ that these are matters we should be evaluating as the season goes on.

And as you stated, we’ve got young bucks as a contingency plan for Maxwell next year. But James? Not so much…

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

All of that is next year’s business. We’ve got a season to play first. Performances this season will dictate our approach with a lot of players and positions next offseason. I like how we’re building this team. A standard is being put in place and if you don’t meet them you’re not going to be here long.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Exactly… this year’s performances will dictate future biz. Thus, EVERYTHING is relevant up to the minute… including how our guys perform in camp, determining starting roles for the opening game.
