Are the Dolphins OK at RB?

2017-06-03_134338

A healthy Jay Ajayi/Kenyan Drake combo could be a great combo, but unfortunately, there are now concussion concerns with our star RB.  What happens if Jay Ajayi is out for a prolonged period of time?  Do the Dolphins have enough talent in their backfield w/o Ajayi to make a playoff run?  Let’s take a look . . .

At Alabama, Kenyan Drake was never “the man”, and was always 2nd fiddle to big back Derrick Henry.  Drake had the talent, and was thought to be the guy, but nagging injuries always stole the opportunity for him.  In his Sophomore year in 2013, Drake had a nice season, carrying (his high) 92 carries for 694 yards, an impressive 7.5 YPC, along with 8 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 12 passes for 135 yards and 1 TD.  In his entire college career, spanning 4 seasons, Drake had a total of 1495 yards rushing.  That’s good and bad.  Bad, because he was never asked to carry the load, and good, because he should have a lot more miles left on what should be fresh legs.

Last season as a Miami Dolphins RB, Drake was used sparingly, carrying the ball only 33 times for 179 yards with 2 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 9 passes for 46 yards.  In comparison, Ajayi had 260 carries, so Drake was just in to spell Ajayi, no more than that.  The Dolphins also have Damien Williams, who was used in a few different capacities, as a FB, and also as a solid receiver out of the backfield.  Williams actually had 2 more carries than Drake, 35 for 115 yards and 3 rushing TD’s.  Williams added 23 receptions for 249 yards and 3 TD’s.  We also have Storm Johnson, who is on his 3rd team in 3 years, taking the full FLA tour, playing for the Jaguars, Bucs, and now Dolphins.  Also on the roster is Senorise Perry and De’veon Smith.  De’Veon is probably the only other back here with a fair amount of carries, although in college, at Michigan. De”veon Smith finished his career at Michigan with 495 carries and 2235 yards, 22 TD’s, and a 4.5 YPC.

There was a report that the Dolphins may be interested in well traveled RB DeAngelo Williams, who was a long time Carolina Panthers, and then Pittsburgh Steelers RB. Williams, now 34, can’t be expected to carry the load Ajayi did last year, or more importantly, was expected to carry this year.   Williams had less than 100 carries last year, and shouldn’t be expected for much more than that.  The Dolphins really need Ajayi, and then we need to pray that he doesn’t have any concussion issues.  You can always find a running back to help out, but it’s not likely to find one that can give you what Ajayi gave us last year, or was hoped to give us this year.

Do you think we’ll be OK?

Go Dolphins!  Zero in!

If they feel like I feel, you don’t want this season to be forfeited. Moore is fine, but you need to have a backup plan, and Doughty just can’t be it. I think they’re in a 2-3 year window right now where they should be very competitive, so I get it.

Can’t say I disagree with this. I didn’t like the way the injury situation was handled from the start, and said as much. Mike I believe we were in agreement on this.

I never felt so strongly that I criticized either Ryan or the Dolphins staff, but I was never convinced at all that he was going to be OK without surgery. If he was going to work on Wall Street, he probably didn’t need the surgery, but to be an NFL QB with an unstable knee, no can do. He doesn’t really lose anything, he would have been out this season anyway, and if he gets the surgery now, he’ll be ready for next season.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

If I’m correct he is pre-med student and Tanny spends time down in the hospital district more than usual people. They have an area where stem cell research is second to none in the US and he choose their advice over established specialists.

I don’t think Cutler has been signed yet, but according to NFL.com, the Dolphins have discussed a contract with Cutler

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000825932/article/jay-cutlers-reps-dolphins-have-talked-about-contract

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

If Cutler is signed then I guess Moore is fine with that? Gase will have three QB’s maybe next year who be be pissed at him. Brad D. who sayw his opportunity two be 2nd string last year and then this year if Cutleri is signed. Moore has played in relief several times for this franchise and has performed above expectations and now Gase is bringing in another QB from the outside. Now, Tanny may get cut next year. Things have destroyed this franchise recently but this situation is avoidable.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

The other link you posted said they did and i believe that would be the next step for Gase,

  10. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    jetssuck

Do you think Gase has to ask Moore’s permission before he signs a QB? Moore was the backup QB. If he were the franchise guy, the Dolphins wouldn’t have given T-Hill that big contract.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

no he is the HC and he has the authority to bring in people who he thinks can best help this team in the short term. After all Cutler is known for bringing together teammates instead of alienating them…

  11. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Moore may be moore than happy to carry a clip board, i doubt Tanny gets cut however if the knee is quetionable he only has 4.6m in dead money should they decide to part ways with him next year.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

There’s definitely some truth to that. If Moore really felt he was a starter, he could have looked for an opportunity with a team that would allow him to compete for a starting job. I think he’s comfortable in his spot here in MIA.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

They may have to make the decision at draft time on tanny because of the draft class is probably the richest in recent years and we can get one of these guys on the cheap 5 yr
      rookie contracts..

  12. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cutler is mobile,, very good from the pocket, he just has these WTF moments every once in a while, but less often under Gase. What gunslinger doesn’t have those moments? I’m ok with either Kaep or Cutler, we have to do something or the season is over. We’re mostly loaded on O and D, so I think either of these 2 could get us to the playoffs, and I think Moore may even be able to, if he could stay healthy all year (I don’t think Moore can stay healthy as the starter all year). With either of these guys and Moore, we should be Ok, but not OK with just Moore.

Cutler is the same QB Moore is, except he has much better pocket presence and is a better scrambler.

  13. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mando I think it was had an article about second guessing the non RT surgery last year. What a dipshit, so the fact that 9 out of 10 wouldn’t be able to play after rest and rehab isn’t enough for Mando?

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not that it was his fault, but one thing I haven’t heard mentioned is Suh getting after RT on the play that got him hurt is what caused the injury. When Suh put it into high gear is caused RT to speed up, to which he didn’t recover.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Better they found out now that his knee was unstable, than a few games into the season. This gives us time to fix the situation.

He stood there pondering what to do, when a man walked up (the guy was mentally challenged) to him and said, take one lug nut from each of the other 3 tires, you don’t need all 4 to keep the tire on the car. 18. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I’ve had some time to digest our QB situation… and I don’t have the energy these days to argue nuances LOL

I’m gonna “let Gase take the wheel” on this one and deal with it, whether he wants ‘familiarity’ with Cutler, or is willing to negotiate with Kaep about “football only! if you want to play on this team”.

Either way, I’m certain Moore starts the season because he simply has more reps with the offense. The others might challenge down the road.

I’ll accept whoever Gase thinks will provide more security at that position … because even Moore is one ‘pop’ from an injury. My gut says Gase will try to get Cutler first because Gase’s philosophy of building a winning team is ‘continuity’ rather than ‘turn over’.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Did the QB situation give you indigestion?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, My gut says Gase will try to get Cutler first… Or maybe, because they’re in negotiations with Cutler now?

I think Cutler, Moore, Kaep… it doesn’t really matter, we have enough pieces around who ever takes the reigns that the team can still win. When Brady was out last year the cheats kept winning, because of all the other parts on the team, which leads to Brady wouldn’t be as good on another team.

Cutler and Kaep are more mobile than Moore, so if the OL is leaky…

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

BTW – I was thinking to myself this morning, after all the posts stating how they wouldn’t support the team if we signed Colin Kaepernick. What happened to “In Gase We Trust”? It just goes out the window when you deem it so? Interesting . . . .

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Gase I trust as our head coach. Signing that guy is a principle thing not related to the entertainment of pro football.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I understand that aspect, but this IS a football team, and if they were to bring Kaepernick in, it would be to win football games, not because of his personal opinion or his political beliefs. Now odds are very, very, low that Kaepernick is in serious consideration, but it would be a football move to make the team better

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Kaep went about it the wrong way and pissed off a lot of Americans, mainly vets, if what he did was really that bad is in the eye of the beholder. I’m not going to be a morals police on the issue, so to each is own. I respect guys on here that have served and their opinions on this subject. I don’t like what he did either, but this is Dolphins football and it trumps most other issues for me 😛

  20. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I hope if we take cutler we don’t just hand him the starting job and let Moore compete for it.

  21. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I hear that side of it Mike E.
But for me personally, it would be disheartening for the organization to bring that type of character to its team.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And it would really be for one season E-Rider. Would be different if we were talking about taking the PR/fan hit to draft what you think might be your franchise QB.

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

People seem to forget that Kaepernick fell out of favor with the 49ers long before his protests, it was based on performance. He’s not the same QB he was a few years ago. People were saying the league caught up to him. His 16 TD to 4 INT last year could be fools gold. Just keep that in mind when just focusing on the social stuff.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

That’s also part of why his price is cheaper though. But you are right he fell out of favor both for his play and being a head case in general. Those might be more important than not standing, a Castro t-shirt and his current girlfriend.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Exactly! Also remember when he had success with the 49ers under Harbaugh those teams had good, tough defenses and they had a strong running game. Kaepernick’s passing wasn’t what lead them, it was his legs along with those other things. You don’t go from being part of a really good team to falling out of favor to unemployed for just social statements.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

        He’s had better than a 2:1 TD:INT ratio every season except 2014, (19 TD’s, 10INT’s) and 2015, where he only started 8 games, he threw 6 TD’s, 5 INT’s.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mike, I know that. But that doesn’t tell the whole story just like a CB having a good amount of INTs doesn’t tell the whole story of say the 1,000 snaps he played. He had accuracy issues and they didn’t ask him to do a lot in the passing game.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tim I believe that a “few years ago” he had a good team around him,

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes, a very good team. That’s my point, they were strong in all phases. We have yet to prove we are that though I am hopeful. What I’m trying to say is I don’t view him as the key to winning or not winning as some have stated.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I took your post as (his skills have diminished), I doubt that’s the case

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

See my post below to Mike, his game did regress.

  23. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we have reached out to Cutler…..only way we did was cause Gase wanted us too. Might break down in other ways (mainly money), but least if Tanny goes IR that has to make Cutler the front runner.

  24. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I also said he’s overrated yesterday. I don’t like one thing about the talk about him coming in. Lol

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Talent always wins out in the NFL, but he is definitely a very unpopular character at the moment. I could almost guarantee if he hadn’t said any of the things he said, he’d be in line to be starting for some team.

  26. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t agree with Kaepernicks issues either but i do understand he is a young kid with a still developing mind. he has a way of going up against the majority and see’s his position as in a positive way disregarding the negative aspects it brings. Maybe a way he feels he can demand the most attention to address his issues.

  27. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Tim

What it comes down to is this . . . Say Moore gets banged up, do you think Colin Kaepernick would give us a better chance to win games than Brandon Doughty? Be honest. lol

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m not saying that. But people are forgetting why he fell out of favor before his social statements and before he was an option for us. Everyone is forgetting the time when people were saying what happened to Kaepernick and why did he regress? It absolutely happened and now everyone is ignoring it. He got beat out by Gabbert. Why?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Maybe Gabbert finally got it. I heard he played fantastic in the preseason game the other night. Kaep has a body of work, and I doubt his skills have diminished so. The Niners were an awful team after all those injuries and retirements, hard to blame the QB. He did play fairly well after he got the job back last season

  28. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

from strictly a talent point of view i think Kaeperniick would be Miami’s best option. the problem is Gase has history with cutler and may feel he can work with him better than any other qb available

  29. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The league didn’t catch up to him, the rest of his team diminished. Put Brady on that 49ers team and they aren’t winning 7 games. The system they were running didn’t work and the talent wasn’t there.

We don’t need Cutler or Kaep to be great in this offense, we just need them to score some points and not turn it over too much, if they can’t do that Moore will play.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

This is what was talked about a few years ago. I’m not making it up and I’m not going to go look for the articles. It was determined that he isn’t effective in any offense other than the pistol and that can’t be run full time. He’s basically a sandlot QB.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

At NV he ran the Pistol full time, why can’t he do it in Miami? Generally you don’t run it full time in the NFL, because you don’t want your QB getting hurt, causing a shortened career, but we don’t care about his career, just this year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I can promise you I’ve followed his career more than anyone here, including Mike 😛 He can play in other offenses other than the pistol, he’s just at his best in the pistol, but Gase can surely come up with an offense that plays to his strength.

Here’s something else that this cuban friend said about Kaep-The Cuban community would burn all their dolphin merchandise and when nothing is left they might burn the stadium down to the ground if kaep was ever to be signed. I won my first chest match against this guy after probably 100 times and didn’t even know I had him in checkmate in 2 moves. He taught me. We used to play with our baseball cards games where the highest number got the bet upon cards. Great Cuban family that lived down the block from us.His family introduced me to cuban food and they would always save me a plate of pork / black beans and rice In those days 4-5 Cuban families lived in the same house until 1 family could afford to buy a house for their individual family or a business then house for family. His father worked at a local supermarket as a receiving clerk. He was a doctor in Cuba and in the 60’s the US didn’t recognize the training cubans had togo through to become a doctor. He worked until he could open a hair salon for his wife who learned hair styling at night school. The family now has several shops in S.Florida and Leo the guy who taught me chess got his degree from UF in architecture and works for a major developer in S.Florida. Steve, I’m sharing what the NFL thought of Kaepernick. They don’t view him as a progression/rhythm QB. He’s more of a freestyle guy. So everything we’ve worked on since last year, let’s just change everything for Kaepernick. That’s really fucked up. I don’t want a guy like that or his off the field nonsense that goes along with it, and a lot of people feel that way. That’s why he still has no team. Let’s stop acting like he’s a Peyton Manning talent being blackballed because he’s black and because of his social statements. That’s nonsense. There’s a lot more to it and a lot of people are ignoring the big picture.

If you’re interested in concussion/brain injury protocols and how everyone feels from the player, the coaches, all the way up to the owner, this is for YOU… it’s VERY insightful.

The player really wants to play, the coaches are caught in the middle, and the owner(s) want to follow league rules. This is great ‘behind-the-scenes’ stuff that most assuredly goes on in the NFL as well. My heart breaks for my dude Colt Brennan… and I still have his favorite receiver from his Hawaii days (Davone Bess) as my avi. Damn…

I was at a party with a bunch of my old friends, and all of them are really big football fans. We had some great discussions yesterday. My best friend Scott, who’s a Steelers fan thinks that Kaep just isn’t good. We went back and forth on that for quite a while, and I asked him if he thought Kaepernick was in the top 25 of QB’s, in other words, better than 7 other teams current starter at QB. He said no. I asked that to all of my other friends, my friend Paul (Jets fan) said yes. My friend Mike (Chargers fan) said yes. My Friend John (Jets fan) said no. My friend Dave (Cowboys fan) said yes. We talked it about for quite some time, because I was really surprised my friend Scott was so against Kaep. He watches a lot of football like I do, and he was in at least 2 FF leagues. I was saying how bad the Niners were last season, and how it’s not fair to rate the QB poorly when the team was so dreadful. I asked him to name one WR and the TE from the Niners, and he couldn’t. I’m sure there are people who could, but I couldn’t even think of one, and after their starting RB Carlos Hyde got hurt, I couldn’t even think of their backup RB.

OK, so here’s who the 9ers employed last season. WR Jeremy Kerley (Jet castoff) led the team with 64 receptions for 667 yards and 3 TD’s. The TE’s were Garret Celek and Vance McDonald, who combined for 53 catches and 741 yards. No reason to bore you with any more stats, but this team just sucked and was bereft of talent on offense. Kaepernick, who was SO BAD finished the season with a 90.7 QB rating. Cam Newtons QB rating? 75.8. Should Newton be banned from the NFL? lol

My point is, people are dramatizing how bad he was, but he wasn’t bad individually, he was just on an awful team last year. If he had never opened up his mouth, he would be starting somewhere, it’s just the reality of it. To that end, I know it won’t be here in MIA, because of his remarks, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be one of the better choices to play here due to his talent alone. He was the 20th ranked QB last year, even on that shitshow of an offense. I get, people hate the guy, and that’s fine, that’s they’re prerogative, but some people can’t divide the hatred of the person and the player, and be honest enough to recognize his talent.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Kaep actually played pretty well last year. He started poorly but finished strong. I think with a QB guru like Gase he could do well. The talent is there but he needs to focus on football and not his activism.

Am I the ONLY one who thinks the longer this Tannehill situation drags on the LESS LIKELY it is that he’ll have surgery fairly soon?? I think the FO wants to thoroughly investigate each option. Can’t blame them for that. But, somehow, I think the process Tanny went through late last season (stem cell infusions, therapy, etc.) MAY be the selection this time, too. It would bring Tannehill back at some point THIS SEASON, whereas the surgery option almost certainly would put him out for the season. If they go for the first option, Tanny still could have post-season surgery, say late January, and return in time for most/all of the 2018 regular season.
    —————
DON’T get me wrong. I AM NOT saying this is the best course of action. I’m only saying that, given the fact that the FO chose this option last time, there’s certainly a chance they’ll do so, again, this time.
    ————–
MANY will jump all over the FO for, in their minds, not providing adequate back-ups at QB, running back and O-Line. With Larsen now out for the year, our depth at O-Line is already significantly impacted from an unlikely source. Both me and Mike E. expressed serious doubts about the O-Line during the last few months. It seems as though our worst fears are starting to come true. But perhaps Gase and his staff can find suitable O-Line depth among the inevitable cuts during August and early September. That said, the injuries to Tanny and Ajayi (who I expect to be back for game 1 vs. the Bucs) were more awful luck than poor planning. I STILL BELIEVE that Matt Moore is capable of leading this team to a winning season. However, we can’t expect him to be the next Earl Morrall, who went 11-0 replacing Bob Griese during the one and only PERFECT SEASON!!
