Are the Dolphins OK at RB?

2017-06-03_134338

A healthy Jay Ajayi/Kenyan Drake combo could be a great combo, but unfortunately, there are now concussion concerns with our star RB.  What happens if Jay Ajayi is out for a prolonged period of time?  Do the Dolphins have enough talent in their backfield w/o Ajayi to make a playoff run?  Let’s take a look . . .

At Alabama, Kenyan Drake was never “the man”, and was always 2nd fiddle to big back Derrick Henry.  Drake had the talent, and was thought to be the guy, but nagging injuries always stole the opportunity for him.  In his Sophomore year in 2013, Drake had a nice season, carrying (his high) 92 carries for 694 yards, an impressive 7.5 YPC, along with 8 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 12 passes for 135 yards and 1 TD.  In his entire college career, spanning 4 seasons, Drake had a total of 1495 yards rushing.  That’s good and bad.  Bad, because he was never asked to carry the load, and good, because he should have a lot more miles left on what should be fresh legs.

Last season as a Miami Dolphins RB, Drake was used sparingly, carrying the ball only 33 times for 179 yards with 2 rushing TD’s.  Drake also caught 9 passes for 46 yards.  In comparison, Ajayi had 260 carries, so Drake was just in to spell Ajayi, no more than that.  The Dolphins also have Damien Williams, who was used in a few different capacities, as a FB, and also as a solid receiver out of the backfield.  Williams actually had 2 more carries than Drake, 35 for 115 yards and 3 rushing TD’s.  Williams added 23 receptions for 249 yards and 3 TD’s.  We also have Storm Johnson, who is on his 3rd team in 3 years, taking the full FLA tour, playing for the Jaguars, Bucs, and now Dolphins.  Also on the roster is Senorise Perry and De’veon Smith.  De’Veon is probably the only other back here with a fair amount of carries, although in college, at Michigan. De”veon Smith finished his career at Michigan with 495 carries and 2235 yards, 22 TD’s, and a 4.5 YPC.

There was a report that the Dolphins may be interested in well traveled RB DeAngelo Williams, who was a long time Carolina Panthers, and then Pittsburgh Steelers RB. Williams, now 34, can’t be expected to carry the load Ajayi did last year, or more importantly, was expected to carry this year.   Williams had less than 100 carries last year, and shouldn’t be expected for much more than that.  The Dolphins really need Ajayi, and then we need to pray that he doesn’t have any concussion issues.  You can always find a running back to help out, but it’s not likely to find one that can give you what Ajayi gave us last year, or was hoped to give us this year.

Do you think we’ll be OK?

Go Dolphins!  Zero in!

I thought Cutler’s said he would only sign if he was the starter? Hope he is close to being in football shape.

Just cut the bullshit and get the knee surgery already. Rest obviously didn’t fix it last time, just go under the knife and get ready for next season.

  3. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I doubt Cutler is just going to be handed the starting job. Moore is capable too, but you absolutely needed a quality guy to back him up or at the very least compete with him for the starting job.

  4. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What I would really like to know now is whether Cutler had been working out to be ready to play if an injury came up or was training exclusively for broadcasting.

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
Yeah, that’s certainly possible. I think it’s still possible Cutler is just the perfect storm sort of QB for this particular situation. Gase knows him. Cutler knows the system. He’s just retired. I think they had to give him that kind of money whether he starts or not because he wouldn’t have come out of retirement otherwise. But, I’m just speculating, of course. Should make preseason a little more interesting, at least. Cutler has plenty of physical talent. I think they also wanted 2 QBs they felt they could win with. Let them compete and best man up.

I think you nailed it. He really was the most logical choice.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Randy — not just me…..it was Cutler and his agent said in FA about he needs a clear starting spot for a good team. But maybe the chance to play for Gase again that was not there before made him back off of that.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I doubt he’s been doing football drills, but I’m sure he’s not 40 lbs overweight sitting on his couch eating Ring Dings either. lol

He probably works out to stay in shape, but he’ll need to get into practice soon and start doing football related stuff.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

LOL, I said as much above.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

For sure wasn’t working out with wideouts, but big difference btwn hitting the gym for health and getting ready for a football season. Not like he didn’t put himself on the FA market though before signing the broadcast contract. Whatever it is he should be in game shape by the opener.

  7. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I just watched all of Cutler’s 180 career TD passes, and he really has a nice fluid motion, and much stronger arm than RT, everything he does looks natural, RT looks a little goofy in comparison (watched his highlights too, and never noticed his goofy movements). Nothing seems to bother him, he just gets back there an wings it, and can elude the rush nicely.

I don’t really care who starts initially, well I would like Cutler, but…, I just want to win. I hope Gase can work with him and keep it in his head he doesn’t have to do it all on his own, just play within himself.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There was an article out this weekend that mentioned the horrible week we had with injuries, and it mentioned how last year every time something happened the team bounced back 1-4 start, RT getting hurt… then went on to say he expected us to bounce back again, well the FO is starting the bounce back today.

  9. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Cutler is the starter. They are not paying him 10 million to be a backup

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That’s the idea, but in no way is Gase going to leave him out there or even start the season as the starter, if he isn’t getting the job done. That $3M in incentives seems to be a little insurance to suggest the team wants an out, if Cutler struggles.

What about Houston last year Ken?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like I said to Brian I’m not sure the money means that. We were in a tough spot. We didn’t want to go into the season with just Moore and no viable backup. It was a unique situation. However I do think he’ll be given a shot to start. Not sure he’ll be up to speed by the opener though.

  26. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Former Dolphins wide receiver O.J. McDuffie on Wednesday won an $11.5 judgment from a malpractice lawsuit against former Dolphins team doctor John Uribe.

A Miami-Dade Circuit jury returned the verdict after a two-and-one-half-week trial.

McDuffie accused Uribe of malpractice in the treatment of a left big toe injury he suffered in 1999. McDuffie’s lawyers said an MRI showed severe ligament damage, but Dr. Uribe told McDuffie he would recover without ever informing McDuffie of the ruptured ligament. His injury worsened as he continued to play with it. He has had two surgeries on the toe since 1999, and was released by the Dolphins on Feb. 28, 2002, after nine years. McDuffie officially retired in August of 2002.

I wonder if the pick 6 Moore threw at his first practice as the Number 1 QB galvanized the decision making to sign Cutler. Probably not, but certainly it makes me feel that we did need another starter quality QB.

We have to beat Brees and about a half dozen other high-scoring QBs this year. We can’t afford to be running in safe mode to protect a back-up QB with either a limited skill set or limited arm strength. We will need to out-score several teams or we will lose.

Still, i do feel bad for Matt Moore. He has been a loyal and ever-ready back-up.

  31. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Well Moore is signed to be the backup and he knows that. I think he’ll be a place holder until Cutler is ready unless he has the hot hand. If we start the season with Moore and it goes well then just ride it.
I just hope Cutler gets fired up and isn’t a whiney little bitch. When’s the last time he’s been in a situation to actually win? After seeing it almost end he may look at this opportunity as his last best chance.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

wow that is certainly a great way to look at it. This could be like one of those transcendent moments because a guy has superhuman motivation. Cutler has always had superior talent. This might be a story-book finish for him.

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

A quarterback in the twilight of his career, only getting offers to play backup.

    Has playoff experience.

Comes to Miami after being recruited by a coach with whom he had a lot of success in the past.

That coach’s last stop, by the way, was the team for which that quarterback most recently played.

This quarterback has to start for the Dolphins because their team leader and starter on the depth chart has sustained a leg injury.

This veteran newcomer to the team ends up winning a lot of games for the team before struggling in the AFC Championship game.

His struggles lead the team to go back to their original starter, who by this time feels comfortable playing, despite his injury earlier in the season.

The Miami Dolphins win that game and then the Super Bowl in convincing fashion with their original quarterback playing as if he’d never been gone.

The Dolphins’ star safety wins the MVP.

    Now…

…was I talking about Jay Cutler or Earl Morrall?

PS: This was just sent to me by one of my sons.

Dbolt, I may not make it the way things are working out. Gonna try.

  35. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Obviously Cutler wasn’t my first choice ($$$, and we only had $15.7M to either extend Landry early or find FAs to replace Ted Larsen and Mike Pouncey when he goes down again), but we got a QB who Gase trusts, already knows Gase’s system, and as Tim stated… has one of the strongest arms in the NFL who can make all the throws. SOLID signing, IMO.

As Ken wisely observed, it’s only a 1 year deal for Cutler. Thus, we can (and will) re-sign Landry next year, not this year. But in the meantime, we’ve got just over $5M to work with right now and we’d better hope nobody else of significance goes down.

Yes… this means that Tannehill is opting to go under the knife, and that’s a good thing for his future. Get it out of the way now: ensure that the knee won’t become a career-ending issue and he should be good to go to begin the 2018 season. He got good medical advice and stem-cell treatment last year, it just didn’t hold up. No harm, no foul, it happens.

Count me among y’all who wanted Cutler in the 2006 Draft out of Vandy, but leave it to Shanadouche to once again claim one of my guys (we all knew Cutler wasn’t going to fall to us, though). My best friend Jimmy (RIP) was ALL about Cutler, and he had some of the best scouting eyes I’ve ever been around. Shanadouche has a history of killing the development of QBs in Denver (and Washington) and Cutler fared no better in Chi-Town until Gase came.

Cutler didn’t have much in terms of weapons to work with in both Denver and Chicago (pretty much only Brandon Marshall), but here in Miami we’re pretty much LOADED.

All-in-all, I’m good with the signing of Cutler. I really didn’t think he’d come out of the booth, but we showed him the $$$ and support from Ross on down. My only demand? Make Cutler EARN the starting job, regardless of the $$$. If Moore outperforms him, you play the better player regardless of $$$.

Now then… let’s get this O-Line figured out with Ted Larsen’s torn biceps and Mike Pouncey just waiting to go down again (hope NOT!).

Welcome to Miami and best of luck, Jay Cutler!
    GO PHINS!!!

As a finely tuned professional athlete for over a decade, I have no reason to think that Cutler is out of shape. He only needs to knock a little bit of rust off and he’ll be just fine.

  40. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Who’s REALLY happy with Cutler’s signing? DeVante and his agent.
Who’s REALLY NOT happy that Tannehill is out? Jarvis and his agent.

Tannehill to Landry is now one of the most prolific combos in NFL history over a 3-year period. Cutler — on the other hand — likes the deep ball to bigger WRs like Brandon Marshall.

OBJ may be quietly smiling somewhere what with Tannehill’s prognosis (OBJ and Landry are tied for the most receptions EVER in their first 3 seasons). Conversely, DeVante’s agent may be quietly smiling somewhere knowing that Cutler will target his client quite regularly.

But FIRST… let’s see who wins the starting job between Moore and Cutler.

M, This may benefit Parker the most and that’s a good thing but what I think we’ll find is that Landry sets up a real nice target for the QB and a lot of what we’ll run will be for Landry. I’m not gonna sit here for a minute and think that Jarvis is great because of Tannehill, Jarvis will thrive with any QB I think.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think it’ll certainly benefit DeVante the most, for sure: AGREED. It’s my hope that Jarvis will thrive as well, so long as Cutler (if named the starter at any point) isn’t afraid to check-down to him. I’d also think that there’ll be designed plays for Jarvis to utilize his great talent.

This is in the back of my head, though: ‘make sure Jarvis doesn’t set the world on fire in ’17 so that we can sign him to an honest contract in ’18’. I’ve NO idea how it’s going to pan out, but it’ll be something to watch throughout the season: will Jarvis see the same amount of targets from Moore/Cutler in a contract year?

At the moment, I’d say HELL NO. I LIKE Kirk Cousins, but I doubt we’re ditching Tannehill so quickly. Plus, either of Matt Moore or Jay Cutler could ROCK for us this year.

Now if we $#!t the bed this year altogether at the QB position, Cousins is certainly a possibility. But that would probably include a Tannehill restructure and massive cuts going into the 2018 season. We’ve got something like only $5M of cap space right now as it stands with contracts for TWENTY-EIGHTEEN (not this year, 2017!). Cutting Byron Maxwell after this year would free-up $10M with $0 dead cap… but what if he balls this year?

Aye… we’ve got to play 2017 before we can even consider ANYTHING in ’18. But again, I DO like MSU’s Kirk Cousins as you do.

Yeah, Bro… it’s a sticky cap situation right now when looking at our 2018. But it’s worth me saying it yet again… I REALLY like Kirk Cousins as you do. I just don’t see how we can fit him in next year with Suh and Tannehill’s contracts… we’d be paying 3 players “QB money”.

Cousins is going to fetch ELITE QB money in ’18 (provided he rocks again this year, no doubt), probably to the tune of $25M/per.

How to save future $$$ in the event Moore/Cutler don’t pan out this year? Early QB in the ’18 Draft to push/replace Tannehill. I DON’T want to go there right now (the season must be played first!), but I’d keep an eye on NCAA QBs this year.

Dammit I hope we don’t need to worry about a QB anytime soon… but so much is up in the air right now, and I don’t believe that Brandon Doughty is any kind of answer.

Rookie Raekwon McMillan is a starter in Miami’s base defense
    • Damien Williams is Miami’s second-team running back and Kenyan Drake is the third-teamer.
    • Davon Godchaux is second-team defensive tackle, behind Jordan Phillips, even though Godchaux has been starting ahead of Phillips in practice.

Hmmmmmm, this is the first I’ve heard of it. Landry is under investigation for Battery?

    Armando Salguero ✔ @ArmandoSalguero
Adam Gase says Dolphins are aware of report that Jarvis Landry is under investigation for battery.

  69. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Last week was a bad week for the Dolphins. This week is starting off badly, too.

Andy Slater of WINZ reports that receiver Jarvis Landry is under investigation for battery. Citing multiple unnamed sources, Slater reports that the incident occurred earlier this year at Landry’s apartment in Ft. Lauderdale, and that it involves his girlfriend.

The Broward County State Attorney’s Office is expected to eventually make a decision on possible charges. Per Slater, Landry’s girlfriend is not cooperating.

For Landry, a separate problem has now arisen. Even if he’s not charged, the NFL will investigate the situation, and it will potentially discipline him under the personal conduct policy. If the situation isn’t resolved this season, it surely will impact his market in free agency next March.

Moments ago, coach Adam Gase told reporters that the team is aware of the situation, and that it has taken all proper steps (including, presumably, notifying the league office). Gase otherwise had no comment.

…Incident is new…..paternity suit was not.
    ——–
The incident isn’t new, it occurred in the spring. Jarvis reported it to team management immediately, and the team then reported it to the NFL immediately. The incident has been known for some time (but not to the public) and likely explains why we haven’t re-signed Jarvis… too much is still up in the air regarding a potential NFL suspension, public backlash, and legal punishment.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sorry my bad…..should have said “news of the incident is new” and added to us. Didn’t know the incident was known about by the team, and thanks for that (only get like 5 articles per month on the local papers). But good for Landry for reporting it.

But like I said…..the police report will come out now. And could be wrong — but the way it came out thinking it is was by the lawyers in the paternity suit to put pressure on.

The analytic predictions being similar with Tanny, Moore, and Cutler isn’t too surprising. The big difference is Tannehill’s ceiling was a lot higher coming into his second year under Gase. That was my biggest reason for optimism about this season was a possible jump in QB play. I don’t see that happening with either Moore or Cutler.

Cutler doesn’t seem like a guy that’s easy to root for, not does he seem like a guy the team will rally behind. I’d have preferred they went with Moore and brought in Kaepernick or a young QB with potential to develop. Unless things go well, I could see the team quitting on Cutler and pushing Gase to go with Moore. Could be an ugly season.

I suspect an attorney drafted that response. Attorneys have nothing to do with a police investigation of battery or how it was reported

It was just a media report of a battery investigation

She admits the police were called in her statement – so we know that isn’t bs

It has nothing to do with the Dolphins contract situation as far as we know

Probably someone in the media just found out there was a DV call and it spread over social media and she had to release a statement clear Landry of any wrongdoing to put any rumors to bed

Don’t read too much into it

If it happened in March, I would think the investigation concluded by now. The police don’t typically release written statements that say “no crime was” was committed

If he incident happened in March
I don’t suspect there were any new developments in August

More likely whomever “broke” the story chose not to until people started paying attention to football again

But IMO the story has no teeth
If his wife/partner/gf releases a statement to explain that nothing more than a verbal altercation happened months ago – I’m not sure it goes anywhere

It’s just the modern world we live in today and how information spreads and of course Dolphins fans worried about the likelihood of an apocalyptical season, which is the fan base we’ve become after decades of disappointment 😳

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Agree that sounds like criminal charges are not in play and neither is an NFL suspension.

But real Q for me is what you put out — why it came out now. Wouldn’t even be talking about her lawyers except that there is an ongoing case in family court that has gotten emotions stirred.

And since they are happily raising the kid together according to her……only issue there could be money. Never worked divorce stuff….but sure did have more than a few attorneys going to our local papers for leverage in nuisance suits. Not like was an agent for an NFL player…..but for sure the guys who ran my county worried about bad press when it came to their next contract come election day.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well, I tend to think most established media outlets have some one with the local police departments to give them information like this on public figures in their community

My suggestion is that whomever “broke” the story was following it for months and sat on it until August when the football audience grows bc it wasn’t really going anywhere

I don’t think it makes sense as leverage for the team, player, or his wife given her statement

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

What you put out made perfect sense on how it might have went down that way So does mine though……would be different if if they were doing something other than litigating what seems to be child custody stuff. Never married and not living together and her leverage is to make it all go away.

For sure didn’t come from Jarvis or the team though, even if might be coming out cause of from some court clerk talking at a bar one night.
