Miami Dolphins vs Atlanta Falcons pre-season game

637330870

Ryan Tannehill, Ted Larsen, Raekwon McMillan, and now Tony Lippett.  That’s not even counting Koa Misi, who couldn’t pass his physical due to his neck injury.  The roster is being robbed of talent, there is no question about it.  The bright side?  The Dolphins have been, and will continue to address the issue responsibly.

Ryan Tannehill went down, they immediately signed Jay Cutler.  They signed an NFL starting QB who knows the verbiage Adam Gase uses in his offense, and he will very quickly be up to speed.  Gase trusts Cutler, and Cutler trusts Gase.  It was a smart move, and one that doesn’t saddle the team past this season, but ensures we can remain competitive, with Cutler as the starter, and Moore backing him up.

OG Ted Larsen will NOT be out for the season, he was put on IR with the opportunity to return after week 8.  With a torn biceps muscle, he should be able to make it back for the 2nd half of the season, but there are a few candidates who would like to not only temporarily hold the spot for Larsen, but keep it, so how this plays out, remains to be seen.  Veterans Kraig Urbik, Anthony Steen and rookie Isaac Asiata will all be battling in the preseason to take the job.

Raekwon McMillan’s season with all the promise in the world, as the rookie was digesting the defense and proving to be worthy of starting MLB was cut short way too early on Miami’s first punt of the day on special teams.  An awkward collision with teammate Deon Lacey resulted in a torn ACL for the rookie standout.  As of now, Mike Hull resides as the next man up, but the Dolphins are looking at other players as well, and brought in long time Bengals fireplug MLB Rey Maualuga.  Unless Rey is signed, I would think that search will continue, until a veteran player is signed.  Taking care of business.

Yesterday, a freak injury to CB Tony Lippett, who showed tons of growth last season.  Lippett, a WR who was converted to a CB led the team with 4 INT’s, and proved he could make the change, and also showed a penchant for being around the ball, and tracking it well in the air.  All he did was jump up, come down a little off, and voila!, a torn achilles tendon.  It’s such a shame, but Adam Gase said before the draft, you can never have enough cornerbacks.  That thinking has proven sage as our depth there may be stout enough to continue on as is, especially after the wise pickup of former TB Bucs CB Alterraun (All-Terrain) Verner.  Maxwell, Howard, Verner, McCain, Tankersley, Pitts, Lucas and Aikens gives us pretty solid depth there.

What am I trying to say here?  Gase and company are ON IT!  They’re not throwing pity parties and lamenting what could have been, they’re addressing each and every pitfall, and keeping this team competitive, and that’s that!  Unfortunately, there will be more injuries, but hopefully no more season ending injuries.  I have complete faith that Gase will continue to do whatever he has to do to ensure we can win.  It feels so good to be able to actually believe that and feel confident enough to say that.

As Ron Burgundy would say . . .   “Stay healthy Miami”

Sam Young, starting at RT, has two penalties that have erased two long gains.

Ajayi went right, broke several tackles and got 23 yards. Penalties offset. Weddle with unnecessary roughness, but Young was holding again.

Cutler slings it to Parker for 31 yards, but Sam Young gets called for holding. Good step up by Cutler regardless. Now 3rd and 27.

Well that game was not the one to go to. LOL

It was as hot as a September Day game last night. I have time I had sweat through all my clothes muggy muggy muggy. One would have thought I was crying in the rain and I would have had good reason to be crying.

I know it’s only preseason but they need to clean up those penalties and Rizzi needs to get the special teams under control

  5. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Good news is Cutler and Parker are already on the same page

Mr Rizzi needs to get his act together, that blocked punt shows a lack of coaching. the guy calling the snap count should account for everyone before he calls for the snap. not to mention we allowed big gains last week on returns and fumbled this week giving up a TD.
    special teams are a mess.

How did String look last night?

  11. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Special teams is one of the most unsettled groups right now. It’s too early to hit the panic button. They are playing so many of the core special teams players on offense and defense right now because of injuries and just getting them snaps for evaluation on the O&D that the guys can’t settle down into their roles yet. Plus they are mixing and matching so many guys to see their individual performances that you cannot evaluate the squad as a whole. Next week will give us a better indication of what they have.

That being said, I agree, special teams have been horrendous so far this preseason.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Looks like we really aired it out. Leading receiver had 16 yards, 2nd had 15, and 3rd 14. Woo hoo!

  13. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

My buddy from the office who has season tickets that I’ve gone to the first two preseason games with has seats in section 102, lower bowl. This is the section just to the right of the corner where the dolphins emerge from the tunnel (to the right if you are standing on the field). As it turns out this the section where the player’s friends and families sit (I guess so they can be close to the players as the come out onto the field) So I’m sitting there and looking at the people in the seats in front of us and jokingly say to him and the guy behind us “man these must be all the player’s families, because I don’t think they even make some of these jerseys for sale to the public”

In front of me were two kids and a woman with Denney jerseys on. Two seats down were a man and women with Chapman jerseys on. I was like, who the hell buys a long snapper jersey? Who buys a BACK UP long snapper jersey?” Who is Sylvester? There are two women wearing a Pitts jersey, who the hell is he? Who is Haack? I don’t know any of these players!”

that’s when he told me about the players families being in that section. I felt kind of bad then for the shit I was saying last week about some of them because their families / friends certainly heard my loud ass.

LOL at this from Adam Beasley:

    Losers

    1. Special teams: A fumbled kickoff. A blocked punt. Another muff for good measure. Too many penalties to count. Yeah, this was a bad night for Darren Rizzi.

    2. Sam Young: The Dolphins’ swing tackle swung and missed at right tackle. His holding penalties erased back-to-back big plays.

    3. All of us: We had to sit through this poor excuse for a football game. Only eight more preseason quarters left.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Gase coached like he didnt want more key injuries. We had 3rd stringers on the field in the 2nd Q, while the Ravens still had some starters.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Nice moment: Rookie defensive tackle Davon Godchaux wore a live microphone for TV, and we saw and heard Ndamukong Suh favoring the rook with tips and advice on the sideline. Suh fears no man. Not the one trying to block him. And not the one trying to take his job.

^^ From Charles Trainor Jr. at the Herald.

Come on Charles! He is not trying to take Suh’s job. SMH AS IF!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

He’s talking about taking his job in the future, maybe next year. Let’s say Godchaux, Phillips and Vincent all play above avg this year, next year you have to start to think maybe Suh is too expensive, and we can get by without him. I don’t know Suhs dead money for 2018, but…

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I think the goal is to make the playoffs. And I’m not saying cutler shouldn’t start at some point. I just think we have a better shot if we start Moore the first couple of games

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

In Gase we trust. I really don’t care who starts the season, I just want Cutler to have a shot at some point before it’s too late. I’m also open to MoorCut, and actually think that could be our best chance.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If you really trust in Gase, think about why Gase brought Cutler out of retirement to come in here and start. Did he do that because he thinks Moore gives him the best shot to win, or because he felt we needed to upgrade? That should answer the question right there.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Even if it means we lose the 1st couple of games because cutler is still rusty? I just think moore gives us the best chance early in season. I watched the tampa game last night. They look like a good team.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m not sure Gase brought Jay in to start. I think he knows Moore can’t be trusted to play all 16 games and needed someone else. This is a 2 QB team, we need both.

Fales is a failure and I Doubt Doughty will ever amount to anything. They have both been ROUGH in the PS.

  24. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

So I read yesterday that Tannehill was supposed to get his surgery yesterday, but then Gase said he had not in the presser last night. Now this morning I read that he is getting it today, but it wasn’t from the team so I guess it is still wait and see.

He needs to get it done pronto so he can be ready for preseason / training camp next year if he wants to keep his job.

Didn’t watch the game, but my first thought on that was why are we talking about when I see he went 3 for 6 passing for 24 yards…pretty small sample size. Then ready a 30-yarder to Parker was wiped out by a penalty….if he completed that one it would be all “Hail Jay Cutler.”

  27. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Despite the two holding calls last night, I think Sam Young has cemented a spot on our 53. Senorise Perry wouldn’t have scored our lone TD last night if not for Young’s key block in the second level. Let’s not forget, Young was NICE last week.

Not sure about Young, He was having a tough time with Balts DE.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind that Young is currently Ja’Wuan James’ backup… and he was facing a Ravens starting DE for the first few series. None too shabby for an UDFA!

Young is going to have his hiccups as all rookies do, no doubt. If nothing more, he’s gaining valuable playing time while Ja’Wuan’s shoulder is healing.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I mentioned this in what I think was my last article, about Dolphins bolstering the QB position. Matt Moore knows this offense like the back of his hand, and is used to coming in relief whenever necessary. Jay Cutler is a starter who still has to learn some of the offense, and get comfortable with the starters. If Moore starts, and then gets injured, it would take Cutler time to get up to speed because his practice time will be considerably less, and NOT with the starters either, so he would really be behind the 8-ball. If Cutler starts now, he’ll have time to learn the offense and become familiar with the starters now. By the time the season starts, he’ll be close to ready, but will likely get more comfortable as the season goes on. He’s the guy Gase wants, we have to respect that. He didn’t bring Cutler here to be a relief pitcher, he has Moore to do that already.

    • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i doubt they are paying cutler to be a back-up, as far as learning the offense i thought he was already familiar with gases offense.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He knows the language, not necessarily our entire offense. Plus, he needs to work with the starters to become more familiar with each guys tendencies.

Rob, you are WAY off man. Once the TEAM started gelling under the new offense with new terminology, new HC, new OC, etc, etc, etc. Tannehill WAS performing as a top 10 QB. His performance during that period (week 6-14) was exceptional. He was top 4 in completion percentage (68.9%), top 5 in passer rating (102.65) and threw better than 2-1 TD to Int ratio.

Cutler has NEVER IN HIS CAREER performed that well, even in his “best season” under Gase.

That’s silly. No one is going to do that.
We are not in dire straits anyway. We have lots of good players in every position group. We just need to get everyone clicking like we did last year, and since we have better talent than last year, we should be fine.

  68. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The OT Young did not look NFL ready, but his sub Eric Smith does look like an adequate back-up to Ja’Wuan. Young played for us last year, so maybe he was just having a rough night. He’s not first team anyway and will only play if someone gets hurt.
Which I know feels like a certainty right about now, but it’s not.
    Bushrod can also play tackle.
Guys like Jesse Davis did not look good, but no one thought they would make the 53 anyway.
Asiata will be fine as a back-up to Steen at LG or he might beat him out. Urbik is ok as a back-up to Pouncey, although no center is as good as Pouncey.

The line last year let in far fewer sacks and blocked for a 1000 yd rusher and a 1000 yd WR, so they can’t have been too awful.

It was the Rush DEFENSE that killed us last year.

I thought Cutler looked excellent with only one iffy throw. And that was the type of thing you do in the pre-season or very early in a game or when you have a Big Lead. It was a throw to a double covered WR, hoping he can make the catch. If not, no biggie, was worth a shot.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Godchaux takes the starting position from Phillips, Phillips looks huge and may be too heavy to sustain his play at a high level, Godchaux looks to be the better of the two.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips is huge. I know he said he played at 335 last year and wanted to get down to 320 this year. Not sure what weight he’s at.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

Philips is still on his rookie contract so it made sense to draft Godchaux. I think T. Fede should watch out. I think he is coming up on his 2nd contract and this kid Godchaux can slip into rotation at DT and save the team money with his rookie contract. T.Fede does play all the special teams so that may save him.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fede plays DE and has had a good camp. I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep 10 DL.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

yes, we know he plays DE. We have several where his playing time is limited but like I said he plays all the ST. Makes more sense to cut him now before his second contract is due. Godchaux can get more reps and eventually replace Philips if he demands too much money on his second contract. 10 DL seems reasonable. Maybe 2 on Practice squad and 8 on game day

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

JS, why cut Fede now still on a 7th rd contract? He’s not going to be expensive in FA anyway because his body of work doesn’t equate to a big deal. He’s a solid rotation lunch pail kind of guy. Phillips isn’t going to get big money either as a FA based on his body of work either. These guys are on the cheap now. Roll with it and worry about their 2nd contract when it’s time.

    This would not surprise me.
DT Suh, Godchaux, Phillips, Taylor, Okoye
DE Wake, Branch, Hayes, Harris, Fede

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

when is philips second contract–I know fede has been with team 3-4 year now and is going to want a raise like everyone naturqlly wants.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Fede will be a UFA next year and Phillips in 2019. As for a raise they’ll likely get a little more money but neither of them is going to get big money based on performance. We’ll be looking at DL in the next two years through both FA and the draft due to Wake’s age, Hayes on a 1 year deal, Fede a UFA in 2018 and Phillips in 2019. But we’re okay for this season.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

FO is going to look towards draft first since this is the cheapest route. I think branch signed recently to a 3 yr deal….

  75. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

With Maualuga signed we may be better off short term than with McMillan, no rookie mistakes. Amidst all the injuries, anyone else get the feeling our FO is all in?

  76. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I can’t believe we got Maualuga for one year, just under $1M! That’s a $TEAL of a deal, reunifying him with Matt Burke from their Cincy days. That leaves us with just over $4M in cap space to make an emergency move if necessary.

I like that we’re only going to use him as an early-down run-stuffer, but beware the audibles and hurry-up Offense when he’s on the field… he’s not a 3-down LB.

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

JS, Suh, Branch, Harris, Godchaux, Phillips and Taylor are the core for the next couple of seasons.

It’s not that Phillips is playing poorly, he’s just not going to another level. He is what he is, a big, athletic DT who can give you some disruptive snaps and some average ones.

  79. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Wait… I thought Jordan Phillips was going to the Pro-Bowl this year with all of the positive coach-speak during OTAs. Ya know… when we tried to land Dontari Poe and all…

But seriously, I think we tried to motivate Phillips as much as we could this year. I don’t know what his malfunction is, but he’s going to get traded or cut if Godchaux beats him out as a starter. Maybe not this year… but certainly next if he doesn’t ‘get it’.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Phillips is still cheap enough and good enough to keep around unless the org has really soured on him. The real story should be about how good Godchaux has looked and not because Phillips hasn’t become a dominant player. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Seems to me that we’ve been trying to light a FIRE under Phillips’ azz in order to motivate him. There was a very good reason why that was done. If he can’t live up to his 2nd Round contract, he’s going to get traded or cut, in favor of Godchaux and his 5th Round contract… should Godchaux win the starting DT job opposite $uh.

  81. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

What’s very weird besides you guy’s is I actually thought he was going to be a pro-bowler this yr also soon after watching every play of his last year Suh has worked with this guy since he arrived and everything has changed from his stance to using leverage to several hand techniques. Last year he was doubled team over 50 percent of the time when plays ran to side at the the last half of season. Suh had similar attention but he was often chipped by RB or TE making him tripled teamed when the play was on his side of ball.
Maybe it’s a motivation ploy. He did get penalized last game for fighting which is a sign of frustration . I do like his play where he got caught for holding where he prevented a OL to pull and get to second level. I didn’t see that last year from him. Maybe he learned that from a crafty old vet?

Pretty cool idea.

  83. It’s GREAT to have a REAL quarterback!!!! Fuck yeah!!!

  84. In other news, the Phins may not return home with one of their players from Philly and, instead, be returning home with one of Philly’s players. You heard it here first.

  85. Maualuga is not the answer at LB. He’s a Band-Aid and was never really all that great with Cincy and now he’s 30 so don’t expect him to come in here and even take the starting spot from one of our young guys.
The team needs to be aggressive going after a LB who can provide them with starting caliber play and the only way they’re going to do that is thru a trade. Sure, we can possibly get someone in the draft next year but this team has too much talent right now to kick the can down the road.

  86. They’re NOT going to cut Phillips. That’s just the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard yet. Phillips, despite having motivational issues is still one of the most productive guys on the defense in terms of tfl’s and qb pressures. I can understand wanting to get more out of him than what they’re currently getting but this isn’t Dion Jordan type stuff here. Phillips isn’t going to get cut. He may get demoted, but not cut.

  87. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

So he could fetch great value in a trade, because hes under performed?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

No, because of his rookie contract coupled with his youth. Now if he was getting paid upward of $10M, he’d be “untrade-able” for under-performing and we’d be forced to cut him instead.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You’re still not making any sense. So far you’ve only said he has value, because of his rookie contract, his youth is redundant. So everyone on a rookie contract brings great value? He’d also only have 1 year left on his rookie contract.

  92. Phillips isn’t getting cut but Landry is probably getting traded. One throw to him Thursday and what does he do? Go backwards. You would think that he’d stop doing that being a vet but he continues to go backwards after catching the ball thinking he’s going to make some kind of a spectacular play instead of trying to just get a yard or two.
Instead, he loses yardage, making it harder for us to get a 1st.

      • I don’t expect Landry to be as much a part of this offense this season with Cutler throwing the ball as he was with Tannehill in there. Philly just traded Matthews to BUF and they need a slot. Landry could get us a guy we really need on the OL or at LB. We’ve got too much talent on this team to keep fielding mediocre guys on the OL and at LB. We can’t go into the season with Hull at MLB and Maualuga sure as hell isn’t the answer. The Pats don’t give a shit about this stuff. They do what they need to do to win.
