Dress Rehearsal Thursday, time for Dolphins to look sharp

636385963046502459-USATSI-10224607

OK, so here we are, the most important game of the 2017 season to date.  Some, not all of the starters will be playing not only the entire 1st half of this game, but some will play into the 3rd quarter as well.  Game 3 of the preseason is the so called Dress Rehearsal, and this will give the coaches a much better idea how the starters look, and where the team is at.

This game will not include heavy duty strategizing, at least not as far as the game plan is concerned.  Neither team is going to show their true personalities, and will follow a basic vanilla gameplan.  It’s all about execution.  Who’s doing things right, who isn’t, and most likely, guys that aren’t doing it right will be executed.  Well, not really, but they might be cut with a poor showing.

QB Jay Cutler had an excellent practice yesterday with the Eagles, and hopefully, set the tone for tomorrow’s game.  It would be nice to see Cutler excel tomorrow, I think that could really boost not only his confidence, but also his teammates.  For Cutler to look good, he’s going to need help from that shaky O-line.  I believe OG/C Kraig Urbik is injured and out for tomorrow’s game, so that means OT/OG Jesse Davis will probably play LG, and Jake Brendel will probably play C, with Jermon Bushrod playing RG, and of course, the bookends will be LT Laremy Tunsil and RT Ja’Wuan James.  We need this unit to look solid, to protect Cutler, and to give the RB’s running lanes.

On the defensive side, it’s a whole different story.  We so desperately need for everyone to stay healthy.  Newly acquired MLB Rey Maualuga will not be playing, but the Dolphins would really like to see some guys step up.  The CB battle should be fierce, even with the season ending injury to CB Tony Lippett, we still have good talent there.  Maxwell, Howard, Verner, Tankersley, McCain, Pitts, Aikens and Thomas give the Dolphins pretty good depth.

At LB, will Mike Hull be able to make the right calls, and even more importantly, not get washed out and make tackles?  I’m not worried about Timmons and Alonso, but it would be nice for Hull to be stout against the run, even though we now have Maulauga.  I’d also love to Godchaux continue to impress, and push Jordan Phillips back into the rotation.  Phillips looks hungry all the time, but is he hungry to keep his starting spot?  We’ll see tomorrow.  I like what we have on the D-line, with our additions of DE William Hayes, and of course Charles Harris.  I think Harris will just keep getting better and better as the year goes on, as they limit his snaps early on, and then slowly increase his workload.  He’s mostly going to be a pass rush specialist this season, and with the current depth, that’s perfect.

I want to see the run game clicking, I want see Cutler upright and throwing accurate passes for scores, and I want to see this defense look tough.  Our defense last year was kind, I want to see some mean.  Don’t give opposing RB’s second chances, and sometimes 3rd chances, make the tackle!  I want God-show to be all up in the backfield of the Eagles, disrupting everything.  I want Hull stopping RB’s dead!  I want Howard, Maxwell and All-Terrain shutting things down.  Hey, it’s only preseason, but like a crystal ball, it’ll show you some things to come.  I think we’ll have a better idea of what our team really is, and I hope for all of our sakes, it’s not like the oddsmakers say, that we’re a 7 win team.

GO DOLPHINS!  Stay healthy!

After watching the Eagles game, and I know it’s only preseason, but I’m starting to wonder if we should change our defensive scheme. We’ll find out after the first couple of games of the season, but early returns show similar problems on D as last year.

  2. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’ve posted probably 10 times in the last 3 months, and I get a page turn? Woo-hoo! I’m buying a powerball ticket.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was thinking about the defense earlier and thought to myself, how many games do the core guys have playing together when you really think about it. A lot of guys have been added the last few years and don’t have a lot of experience playing together. Young players in the mix too. My hope is they start to gel as the season goes on even if they get off to a slow start.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Parker reminds me of Michael Irvin. The crossing route in the 2nd PS game and the fly route jump ball in the 3rd. That was Irvin’s game.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

He doesn’t remind you of Ernest Wilfork—-same size. Maybe Karooo. Irwin was a showboat coke dealer punk. His son allmost got kicked off of the st.thomas HS team because he took after his dad with his showboating disrespectful crap. Parker is a respectful kid who respects the game and acts mature.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No he doesn’t and I’m talking about their style of game. Irvin was so much better than Wilfork why even go there and Parker is so much more talented as well.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, a lot of the defensive issues seem to be breakdowns. Chemistry comes with time. We really have a lot of new faces over the last 2-3 years and some were too green early on and some got hurt. There isn’t a big body of work with this group. But there is physical talent there.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It shouldn’t take two years to learn to stop the run, but we’ll see, it very well could be a chemistry thing. If we’re still struggling to stop the run by the end of this year something has to change.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you think about the personnel last year a lot of guys were 1st timers, we got banged up or some weren’t here yet – Hayes, Harris, Godchaux, Timmons, Allen and McDonald etc. Howard played half a season, Jones even less. Maxwell and Alonso 1st seasons. There really has been no continuity on defense the last 3 seasons and Gase’s 1st last season. Got another week of practice and a PS game, then the RS game week practice game plan to clean some stuff up. Fingers crossed. LOL

Anyone on this site who makes red sauce ever add a dollop of peanut butter to the mirepoix? I was skeptical, but I tried it today, and was kind of blown away by the results. It added a savory element and reduced sweetness in a good way.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe just mash up some peanuts into the sauce as an alt.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, you could probably make that work and achieve a similar effect. The concept was out of left field for me for this type of sauce. I know a couple people here make red sauce, meat sauce, etc. Just wondering if anybody else has heard of this before.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Looks like you and I are the only ones not watching the ‘fight’.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not into it enough even though I’m intrigued about it.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

To me it’s just a money grab. McGregor has the proverbial puncher’s chance, but it’s extremely unlikely, and this fight shouldn’t be remotely close.

  6. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just watched the second half for the first time, our D sucks at the bottom. 9 guys in the box and can’t stop the Eagles, pathetic. Okoye, Chase Allen, Warmsley…

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know that Bellycheat will keep the pasties* rollin but losing Edelman will hurt on game day for real. he and Brady have a built-up chemistry that is hard to get to quickly. Plus Edelman is tough, crafty, and has great hands. To replace him they will need somebody with the football IQ to be close to that Super Bowl winning catch, to have the good hands to softly snatch it off the turf and yet cradle it for a catch, and the toughness to contort his body and still take a fall into the dirt with nothing to break the fall.

How many times have we had that team on the ropes and had to watch Edelman bail Brady out with 8 yds on a 3rd and 7? for example … Seems he does that once or twice every game and not just against us. He’s even better than Welker was at that shit. Being a former QB, he has a feel for where everybody is and how to magically appear at just the right line of sight for Brady and still be in a soft spot in the defense.

I think this loss is going to hurt them in spite of the HC being able to redraw his game plans.

We only need them to lose 2 games because of this and they go 10-6 and in danger of being tied with us.

  9. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s why i am worried about them getting Drew Morgan, who seems to have that same feel for the flow, maybe not as well developed as yet.
But he could be the next in the series of white, dependable, crafty, always open receivers that they love to have up there.
Pardon the white comment, but hey look at who has thrived there.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ditto the above serious loss for them
… they lost Ninkovich, another career over-achiever and thorn in our side. Same thing as Edelman in a way. You can’t just plug in any B-grade DE in there and teach him to be intuitive and always in the right spot to make a play. Witness the failed Kony Ealy experiment.
Ninkovich was the third in the string of guys like him behind Tedy Bruschi and Mike Vrabel.
This loss will hurt them for 1-3 big plays per game as well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What has Drew Morgan done? I keep hearing how great he was before camp, then not so much when the pads came on, and in preseason games he’s been invisible too. Maybe I missed some end of game catches though. Why do you feel this way about Naples?

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Because you think he’s next in line to be a great slot receiver I’m going to take another look.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Kid is at least getting praise in camp for what he does. Don’t have the same feeling as I did for Chris Hogan, but then our camp is not on hard knocks either.

Dolphins Will “Seriously Listen” To Trade Offers For WR Jarvis Landry? http://bit.ly/2wfX4Fa

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Was expecting someone to come up with that. If we were going to trade any big name Landry would be most logical btwn our depth at WR, his contract situation, and such. But real easy to say will “seriously listen” when you know you can’t be proved wrong. Only way to do that is a re-sign and we don’t have the cap for it after bringing Cutler in.

      • IMO they know they’re close and want to shore up an area of need like LB or OL. Draft picks ain’t gonna do it but you never know.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

My main thought has always been that Gase & Co are building a long-term competing franchise first. So would not be shocked if they dealt Landry, but if they do in my mind will probably be because either the offer was just too good to refuse and/or they think the price of Jarvis’ 2nd contract will be too pricey. LB or G would for sure be the most obvious trade bait for them though.

  11. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    James Walker
    ESPN Staff Writer

For the first time with the Dolphins, new LB Rey Maualuga is dressed for practice. I’m not sure how much he will do today, but that’s a step forward for him.

  12. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t think trading Landry for a OG is in our favor for value, but for a starting play-making LB, yes there might be.
I already listed my potential trade scenarios, thereby reducing my douchiness quotient.
We cannot afford the $15mill tag on Jarvis, nor is he worth that.
Worse case scenario is he walks like Vernon and we get nothing but a 3rd round comp pick.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

G is the greater overall need though. Raekwon will be back next year.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

a minor factor is how Maualuga looks, but really he is just a stop-gap measure, not a real solution.
Raekwon will be back. but when he is, he’ll still be a 21-yr-old rookie and Timmons will be even older and what about this year?

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Best case is we trade Landry for a mid-first round pick with Philly or for Hicks with his 7 INTs in 2 yrs or the Vikings mid-first rounder or Minny for Eric Kendricks, who has 6.5 sacks and was their leading tackler the last 2 yrs.

Philly just cut 2 WRs and a CB, sooooo maybe they are making moves.

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If we do trade Landry we better get good value.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Right? I wouldn’t give him up for less than a high 2nd rounder, like from SF or Cleveland. The Browns have a stockpile of high picks right? They could peel one off for Landry like it’s nothing.

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If we trade Landry for a OG, he better be an all-pro with good years left.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wouldn’t have to be one-on-one swap though. Could be something like the one for Stills with us getting the draft pick.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Nice if we could get a sleeper ILB with a high ceiling like we got with Stills and a draft pick throw-in!!!!

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I would hate giving him to the jest or jills or OMG New England to fill in for Edelman. If we must lose Jarvis, put him in the NFC, so he can’t haunt us.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

BTW, the stooooopid jest traded a CB to the eags for a, get this, Safety. Did they not just draft TWO safeties? Man, not even Ireland was that dense.

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Steve it seems that Drew Morgan caught a ton of balls in college of the type that the pros designate a slot receiver to get. And for us he has been open many times in the PS games, but Doughty over throws him or worse every time. I’d like to see him in with the ones or at least Moore.

PS: I think they might have been hiding Stringfellow so as to keep him on the PSquad if necessary.
Actually I think he is good enough to be our #6 WR, but with our OL in disarray like it is, we might need to keep 10 there, or 7 LBs or 10 DBs this year and only 5 WRs, if Stringfellow cannot play STs. Then hope to tuck him on the taxi squad and hope nobody poaches him.

  20. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

The pats are getting back gronk this year and he more than makes up for the lost productivity of lost production from edelman. The replacement won’t catch as much but the difference could be made up with gronk and brady spreading it around more. Who knows the replacement may blossom who has been waiting in the wings. I think the biggest concern for the patriots may be Brady–the guy is what 40 now or soon. Quick timing patterns can only go so far before some teams figure how to disrupt this and more timely patterns have to be used by Brady. 40 is a age where hard hits can cause injuries as opposed to when he was younger.

  21. If the team gets the right offer, Landry is as good as gone this Friday. First Tannenbaum is on the air Thursday talking about player for player trades and now this.

  22. Team is in WIN NOW mode so they could be looking to deal Landry for a player who can help them in area of need OR they could also be looking to try and get picks that would enable them to move up in 1st for a qb in ’18. Going to be interesting.

  23. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s pretty much a given that Maxwell will not be on the team next year and that’s $10M with no cap hit. He’s about to be benched for Verner.

Or are they only listening to serious offers?

We’d be stupid to trade him. It makes absolutely no sense. Yeah we’re soooo good after one playoff appearance which we lost that we can trade away our best player, at least one of our top 3, and everything will be fine.
    It’s dumb!

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t know about any of that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I stream games online but it can be a pain in the ass with freezes and you have to reload and you miss some plays but at least you can watch most of the game.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Toba — you are obviously going to have to check out for yourself. Rules might be completely different in Canada than in the US. At one point moved from a cable building to a Direct TV one and all of a sudden saved money by not having to head to a sports bar. But that was before streaming. If it works like Sunday ticket did for me straight from Direct TV……what a FF dream. And no it was nothing like Game Zone (every game other than your local one to flip though).

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Yes i at least will be able to get all Fins games.. right now with game zone i have as Tim said exit load and repeat to change feeds.. i guess week one will be the litmus test .. i am spoiled by the cable package where each game was assigned its own individual channel and flipping was uber easy .. i am hoping It is that way as well

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Well then you had the equivalent of NFL Sunday ticket from Direct TV. And only way to get that in the US is through Direct TV. And when I said Gamezone meant Redzone, which is what my cable company offered. That helps with fantasy, but not on watching games. The official NFL streaming package that Tim tried only shows preseason games live in the US though if that helps, but does offer replays after.

  29. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To be clear, I do not want to trade Landry. Love the guy.
But I felt we got kinda ripped off with the triple hit that year we lost Rishard Mathews, Lamar Miller, and Olivier Vernon to FA
I don’t think the comp picks equaled the value we lost, even though it was somewhat cushioned by having other good players to make up for the losses.
So if we are gonna lose Jarvis to FA anyway, I would prefer to trade him and not get ripped off again. Only way to do that is trade him now, because then the receiving team could get him cheap for a year before having to give him the raise we won’t be able to afford.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

another point that could happen next yr if he isn’t traded or signs a new contract is some team could offer a high salary next yr because they know it would hurt us dishing out all the available cap money towards one player. If this happens then we get just a 3rd or 4th rounder for compensionthe following yr for draft.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Those 3 players’ contracts add up to $126M though.

  30. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Why would we trade Jarvis? If we’re trying to WIN NOW, he’s cheap labor (still on his rookie contract) and he’s the best WR on our team. If it’s because we don’t want to pay him BIG $$$ next year, guess what… the team that trades for him will have to pay him BIG $$$ next year.

Trading him won’t clear SHIT for cap space being he’s only costing us $1.1M this year and we’re going to clear a boatload of space next year when we cut Byron Maxwell, Ja’Wuan James, and possibly Mike Pouncey… not to mention, we won’t carry BOTH Tannehill and Culter next year. We can EASILY afford Jarvis next year, and we can always give him the franchise tag.

If we trade a player, it doesn’t even make sense to trade Jarvis… unless we get at LEAST a 1st Round draft pick in return, nothing less (don’t see that happening). Look for somebody that can give us some actual cap relief to be traded for somebody that’s actually worth trading for… that’s not Jarvis.

I’m not a ‘rocket surgeon’ (though I play one on TV), but trading Jarvis would be absolute foolishness, doesn’t make fiscal sense in any way, shape, or form, and it weakens a strength of ours… as we’re playing to WIN this year.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed on most of this but not so fast on James. Let the season play out. However I do agree Maxwell will not be back, at least not at his current price. The only way we move on from Pouncey is if he can’t play. Gase loves the guys and so do his teammates.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Toba, I think I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you were talking about something unique in Canada. Yeah the live streams are a challenge each week. One week one works well with good quality and then not the next week so I use another. As far as NFL Game Pass it’s only for the PS live, then you only get rewinds for the RS. I don’t really have a need for that. I wish the NFL would provide games online as opposed to only Direct TV.

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Well based in what they did with Canada , it will be coming to you soon . Goodell said they are aligning with the new gen of people wanting to watch on mobile devices … redzone will also be included with DaZN.. cost is 20.00/ month can cancel anytime which will be 30.00 cheaper than cable ST..still had to drop 200.00 for an apple tv box to acess it though..

  32. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It’s pretty funny how we speculate on getting rid of so many of our players. RT gets hurt off he goes. Trade Landry. Get rid of this guy and that guy’s contract. Replace them with who? It’s kind of crazy.

I’m just trying to illustrate that we can clear a BOATLOAD of cap space next year if need be. I will ALWAYS let the season play out, but it’s highly unlikely that Maxwell, James, or Pouncey (<– injury prone) will earn their 2018 paydays.

This nonsense of trading Jarvis Landry for 'somebody/anybody else' is getting under my skin. For whom? At what position? How would that afford us cap relief (merely $1.1M this year)? It's just nonsensical, premature, fiscally irresponsible, makes us weaker as we try to WIN NOW, comical, and even Omar is pitching for this to happen (that should tell EVERYBODY something).

As far as Ja'Wuan James is concerned… he'd better make the Pro-Bowl this year with his $9.3M scheduled for next year with $0 dead cap (picked up his 5th year option). Let's face it, Tim… Ja'Wuan and Maxwell are in the EXACT same boat: BALL or DIE.

The TV stations and the TAMPA BAY TIMES are among the throng of Bucs’ fans whining about their offense. My view is somewhat different. When the Bucs get Doug Martin back from his suspension, they should be at least a middle-of-the-pack offense, if not better than that. He’ll miss the first three games of this season which, of course, includes the opener at Miami. Thus I give the Fins a real chance in this game, despite the fact I’ve only seen them play in parts of 2 preseason games. I HAD PLANNED on going to the second home exhibition game, but the lack of my pre-paid parking pass ended those plans (both Mrs. OD and your’s truly are still unable to walk the long distance from the cash lot.)
    ———————-
I expect an absolutely full house in Hard Head Stadium for the September 10 game. At least 10,000 to 15,000 Tampa Bay fans will make the trek down I-75 for this contest. I would not bet the house either way on this game. I’m particularly concerned about how the Fins’ secondary will match up against the Bucs’ receivers, especially 6’5″ Mike Evans. Our defense will have to come up big if Miami is to win this contest.

Well, we will have to wait and see who Belicheat tries to take away when we play them. The last few years it has been Landry he has tried to neutralize. Now that Parker is coming out we may see a lot more 1 on 1 on Landry.

  92. If Parker & Stills become major offensive weapons this year, which they most likely will, you’re not going to continue to target Landry 130 + times a season.
If the team is going to be unwilling to part with #1 wr money for him at the end of the season, and that’s definitely happening, it would make sense to try and move him before then and get something for him rather than letting him walk and get nothing.
Landry is as good as gone one way or another. It doesn’t do the team any good to wait until the end of the season just to make a half-hearted attempt to keep him in Miami to try and make it look good for everyone concerned.
If they were to get a good enough offer for him why not let him go? What does Landry bring to the team that’s SO great that he cannot be replaced?

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He brings lots of catches. He brings lots of YAC. He brings lots of first downs. He brings lots of effort. Why trade your #1 WR when you are trying to win?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m going to give ya a hint here… Cutler is on a 1-year loan, meaning unless he BALLS OUT, Tannehill is our returning starter in ’18. Jarvis and OBJ jointly share the NFL record for most receptions by ANYBODY in their first 3 seasons.

I don’t discount what you’re talking about… that Jarvis isn’t scoring TDs for us like OBJ does; your beef is with Tannehill and I see that.

Let’s see how the season plays out with Cutler at the helm… you got your wish, man. Until this season is played out, neither Jarvis or Tannehill are going anywhere. We’re not going to go bat-shit nuts trying to trade marquis players to fill a void at LG or MLB.

We already signed Rey Maulagula (on the very cheap)… for better or for worse. We’ve got a cap situation right now. We can’t be spending/wheeling & dealing like drunken sailors right now. If want to augment our roster with a FA vet, look for it after week 1 when salaries are no longer guaranteed and far cheaper.

      • Tannehill is as good as gone and so is Landry. Stop being in denial. When all is said and done Cutler is signed to an extension, Tannehill is either cut or traded and Landry is being traded sometime in the near future.
For this team to let Landry walk in FA would be even a bigger travesty than the trade that so many will hate. Why would you let him walk and not get anything for him. You know that, even with a healthier cap situation, this team is NOT paying him #1 wr money. It’s not happening.
Why would you pay a guy with his production that kind of money? That’s crazy. The only reason he put up the numbers he did was from pure volume and that’s because Tannehill was the quarterback and you know it. You’re living in denial.
Get ready for some changes next season. With the offensive weapons this team has it can score a lot of points and there’s no room for guys who can’t help score points anymore. Phins are getting ready to make some moves that’s going to make them the next team to beat and they’re not going to become that team by sitting on a quarterback who can’t get them to that level.
They’re going all out on one of the top quarterback prospects in the next draft and it’s most likely the kid from Wyoming. This team can’t sit back any longer and watch while other teams take their quarterbacks of the future in the draft with a guy who isn’t capable of getting them where they need to go.
You trade Tannehill to another team and he’s out of the league in two years tops. Oh yeah, btw, Landry IS getting traded.

I don’t know where to start and I don’t know where to end. I suppose I’ll both start and end here: NOTHING is happening before this entire season has played out… barring an 0-6 or 1-5 start.

The kid from Wyoming is Josh Allen, and we’ll see how he performs this year… JUST LIKE we’ll see how our Phins perform this year. Ya CANNOT write into stone that which has yet to be determined, man.

    • The only way things don’t play out this way is if Cutler suffers a season ending injury or we have a lot of injuries on the team that hamper the team’s ability to win games.
Otherwise, it’s a given that Cutler is extended because, although Gase talks a good game when it comes to Tannehill, Cutler is his qb; not Tannehill.
He specifically went after Cutler to bring him out of retirement and some of it had to do with him being familiar with the system but it also had to do with his ability to run this offense and what he can do with the weapons he’s got at his disposal.
You saw firsthand on Thursday what this team is going to bring to the table on offense with a qb who has the ability to utilize it’s offensive weapons whereas what it would’ve been like with our other qb throwing the ball short of the first down marker 90% of the time.

I know, let’s trade the best player we’ve drafted since Jason Taylor because I don’t know why not we might get a washed up lineman and a shitty linebacker. Win win. You’ll see dooshbags you’ll see.
