Dress Rehearsal Thursday, time for Dolphins to look sharp

636385963046502459-USATSI-10224607

OK, so here we are, the most important game of the 2017 season to date.  Some, not all of the starters will be playing not only the entire 1st half of this game, but some will play into the 3rd quarter as well.  Game 3 of the preseason is the so called Dress Rehearsal, and this will give the coaches a much better idea how the starters look, and where the team is at.

This game will not include heavy duty strategizing, at least not as far as the game plan is concerned.  Neither team is going to show their true personalities, and will follow a basic vanilla gameplan.  It’s all about execution.  Who’s doing things right, who isn’t, and most likely, guys that aren’t doing it right will be executed.  Well, not really, but they might be cut with a poor showing.

QB Jay Cutler had an excellent practice yesterday with the Eagles, and hopefully, set the tone for tomorrow’s game.  It would be nice to see Cutler excel tomorrow, I think that could really boost not only his confidence, but also his teammates.  For Cutler to look good, he’s going to need help from that shaky O-line.  I believe OG/C Kraig Urbik is injured and out for tomorrow’s game, so that means OT/OG Jesse Davis will probably play LG, and Jake Brendel will probably play C, with Jermon Bushrod playing RG, and of course, the bookends will be LT Laremy Tunsil and RT Ja’Wuan James.  We need this unit to look solid, to protect Cutler, and to give the RB’s running lanes.

On the defensive side, it’s a whole different story.  We so desperately need for everyone to stay healthy.  Newly acquired MLB Rey Maualuga will not be playing, but the Dolphins would really like to see some guys step up.  The CB battle should be fierce, even with the season ending injury to CB Tony Lippett, we still have good talent there.  Maxwell, Howard, Verner, Tankersley, McCain, Pitts, Aikens and Thomas give the Dolphins pretty good depth.

At LB, will Mike Hull be able to make the right calls, and even more importantly, not get washed out and make tackles?  I’m not worried about Timmons and Alonso, but it would be nice for Hull to be stout against the run, even though we now have Maulauga.  I’d also love to Godchaux continue to impress, and push Jordan Phillips back into the rotation.  Phillips looks hungry all the time, but is he hungry to keep his starting spot?  We’ll see tomorrow.  I like what we have on the D-line, with our additions of DE William Hayes, and of course Charles Harris.  I think Harris will just keep getting better and better as the year goes on, as they limit his snaps early on, and then slowly increase his workload.  He’s mostly going to be a pass rush specialist this season, and with the current depth, that’s perfect.

I want to see the run game clicking, I want see Cutler upright and throwing accurate passes for scores, and I want to see this defense look tough.  Our defense last year was kind, I want to see some mean.  Don’t give opposing RB’s second chances, and sometimes 3rd chances, make the tackle!  I want God-show to be all up in the backfield of the Eagles, disrupting everything.  I want Hull stopping RB’s dead!  I want Howard, Maxwell and All-Terrain shutting things down.  Hey, it’s only preseason, but like a crystal ball, it’ll show you some things to come.  I think we’ll have a better idea of what our team really is, and I hope for all of our sakes, it’s not like the oddsmakers say, that we’re a 7 win team.

GO DOLPHINS!  Stay healthy!

The odds of a major trade at this point are some where between non existent and zero. You don’t trade away players who can help your team in week 4 of pre season. Teams are not looking to bring in players this late in the pre season. They have not had any off season work outs or any training camp practices. They have to learn a new playbook. QB and WRs have to work out timing and there is just no time to do that before the start of the season. That is why you don’t see many trades this late into the pre season

  8. herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

If anyone cares what I think, Landry is more than the number of TDs he has in a season. He’s the Juice. He’s one of the biggest sparks on this team. You have to have guys like that and they aren’t easily replaced. Oh yeah, and he’s one of the best players we’ve drafted in a long time on top of that. He’s a keeper.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

      That’s right.

    • The most important player on the offense is Jay Ajayi; by far. If Ajayi runs the ball well and we’ve got an effective running game everything else on offense is a lot easier.
You can throw the ball to “Juice” all you want and we’re not going to win because you target him.
I can pretty much guarantee you that if Landry wants #1 wr money out of Miami he’s not a keeper because they’re not paying him that kind of money. So, if they don’t trade him sometime during the season then he’s gone at the end of the season because they’re going to let him test the market and see what kind of offers he gets and then if it’s in their range they’ll make some kind of offer.
If someone is offering a lot more than what we’re willing to pay he’s gone. I’m just being realistic about the situation. A team isn’t going to pay a slot wr who can’t score that kind of money.

Lou with a hard on for trading Landry
    *******************

Lou has a hard on for posting with a bunch of douchebags. There . . . . I fixed it!

    • If you think fans lost their shit when this team let Clay walk what do you think will happen when they let Landry do the same?
If you’ve got no intention of paying a player the kind of money Landry is looking for, and he’s already said what he thinks he’s worth, then you need to get SOMETHING for him rather than just letting him walk.
And, wouldn’t you want something of better value than a 3rd rd comp pick in ’19?
Unless they really feel that nobody else is going to come close to what he wants either then maybe they’ll take that chance and let it play out but if they think someone else with the cap space like a Cleveland is going to throw a boatload of money at him and then he’s lost in FA, they should try and get something rather than let him walk and get shit.

  11. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I honestly agree with much of what Lou is saying. I posted MONTHS ago, after we re-signed Stills it would affect our chances of signing Landry. I think the Dolphins are waiting to see how Devante performs this season before offering Landry a contract, because they can’t pay Stills, then Landry, then Parker big money. They can’t pay all three $30 million total per season, and it would be unwise to spend that much on three receivers in this offense. Maybe they plan on letting Stills walk after year two of his contract and they re-sign Landry this offseason and Parker the season after that. Who knows. But logic says that if they are going to keep two out of the three then Landry will be the odd man out based on his contract demands. You don’t pay a slot receiver $12 million -$15 million per season.

  12. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Additionally, if we lose Landry I am never buying another jersey again.

  13. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Relax, we’re not paying Stills ridiculous money at $8M per year. That’s not top WR money. We can pay Landry, and waaaay too early to worry about Parker, who still by the way hasn’t really done a thing yet in the NFL. We have Parker under control through next season, so no reason to panic.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Falcons are paying over $12M per to Julio, about $6.5 to Sanu, another $8M to Devonta Freeman. It can be done

Only Omar thinks this was a good throw

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

It was awful. Maybe he should have looked at the freaking coverage before “Throwing to a spot”.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

In Moores defense you can see that he threw the ball prior to the double team, that said the pass was short and that’s on moore

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

seem s like the underneath receiever is open but the ball was allreay thrown probably 1/2 secomd earlier. The db dropped in2x coverage also.Maybe the underneath receiver didn’6t get off the snap like he was supposed to also.Could have been a pick play that went bad also In the picture the boottomm receiver hasn’t made the inside cut which would bring the outside DB out of the play.Could be spacing of receivers which could help the DB cover easier with designed pick plays…I’m sure Moore would not throw into double coverage on purpose.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

You are right Stills was open on the cut JS

But instead Moore threw into double coverage
Which is okay if you throw it near the sideline where only the receiver can catch it – but that is nowhere near will the ball lands

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

      It’s not even worth discussing.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I said on game night it was on Parker, but after looking at it a few times…yeah Parker shouldve been more aware, but who throws a fade that far off the sidelines into 2x coverage without looking off the receiver?

  16. jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

it could also be the outside receiver needs a hearing test or maybe he was set up to take a delay snap count or two .Can you hear me now…..Lots of things can go worng on any given play to make a play bad…

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It looks like it should have been a classic fade in the endzone and Moore just put it in the wrong place

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

could be just that but every inch of the playing field is accounted for when coaching and making up timing patterns. The new NFL is not brute force anymore its all about smarts and who can design plays better than the opposing players natural abilities. The reason I like HS better than the pro’s now a days is the brutality of smash mouth football. The pro’s are a pass touch football league compared to 10-15 years ago.

  17. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Bri

I don’t think we’ll have to pay Landry $12M per. I think we’ll get it done for around $10M per

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Stafford got five years at $135 million. If he is worth $27 mil a year then maybe Tanny is worth his $19 mil. Even if Cutler explodes and sticks, means Tanny gets traded rather than cut.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bears are talking about starting Trubisky, and they’re paying Glennon $18M this season

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

But if Cutler explodes hell be looking for more like $20 mil and Tanny is entering what should be his prime years. Just don’t see both on our roster next year. Cutler made clear he would only play if he was the clear starter.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Stanger

I wasn’t saying we’ll have cap room for both, it was more about being shocked that CHI is willing to pay Glennon $18M and sit him. That really surprised me. I think Tannehill is the future here, unless Cutler just has an insane year, and then wants to be here and here only

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Sorry thought you were going to both, but sure does show what back-up QBs in their prime years with hype can get paid though. Declare Garoppolo a FA and his price might be just about the same. Also might not work out either.

Cutler is a slinger who is going to take more shots downfield. I expect his numbers to be career bests because he has so much more talent around him. What has impressed me is not his long ball or arm strength but how quickly he sees the field and and makes a decision.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He has a lot of confidence in his arm. Not just long balls but to fit it in a tight window.

I don’t think Cutler’s talent is in question. He’s got a great arm – one of the best. I actually don’t question the decision to sign him either. I would have done the same if I was the Dolphins. And I think signing him will keep us competitive each week

But I’m simply responding to WY’s post about who Cutler is. I’m not lying to myself about who Cutler has been as an NFL QB.

To a certain extent I think he gets a bad rap bc he really has decent numbers over his career.

32k career yards and over 200 TDs are pretty good numbers

    but he’s got less than a 2:1 TD/INT ratio
so let’s not pretend he’s something he is not

To me, he’s the best we can do after a Tannehill injury
and in some ways (I agree with OROB about his pocket presence) he’s an improvement over tannehill – but he’s a band aid, not a piece to build the franchise around

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Anyone here interested in assuming the reins of a dynasty team in a 12 person dynasty league? League fees are inexpensive, $30 or somewhere around that.

  56. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The only troubles I’m seeing at the moment…

    Offense
    1) Starting LG and O-Line depth as a whole (and I’ll throw in Pouncey’s durability/injury issues)
    2) Cutler’s not fully acclimated to his new teammates

    Defense
    1) Maualuga isn’t a 3-down LB and may get stuck on the field via hurry-ups, or audibles could be used to exploit him as a pass-defender
    2) Overall gelling with the new faces of Maualuga, Timmons, Hayes, Allen, and now Kiko as an OLB instead of being a MLB

I truly can’t think of much more, other than sustaining injuries to key players over the course of the season (knock on wood). Cutler should be able to get up to speed relatively quickly being he knows the Gase Offense and he has many weapons to choose from until he’s 100% familiar with everybody. His superior pocket-presence should help him in the event our O-Line has troubles.

Our Defense should be able to gel quickly as well, being we have vets as most of our new faces. Maualuga should be strong against the run and he knows the Burke Defense. If our pass-rush arrives on time, life is going to be so much easier for our LBs (including for Maualuga) and DBs.

I’m almost ready to make a season prediction (Boulder’s spreadsheet)! I want to see PSG4 first, though. Needless to say, I FEEL GOOD, like James Brown.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I feel hurry-ups or audibles are overrated. Very few teams run a hurry-up consistently well. That would mean they run their offense perfectly and never have a bump in the road and never have to regroup themselves. If Maualuga is on the field, the team already knows he is and it’s not like he’s a stationary object with a direct path to the endzone. Also we’re not the only team that those issue at times.

To me Maualuga if he makes the team, will only be on the field to spell someone, in short yardage and goal line. It’s no different than isolating a guy like say Brandon Spikes who was more thumper than space LB. What about the undersized defenders who can rush and cover but teams keep pounding the rock on? There is no perfect defense and when you find one please show me. 🙂

Moore made a living in the Raiders’ backfield as he earned a sack, a hit and a hurry, along with beating his man on several other occasions. He forced a fumble on QB Connor Cook to end a drive as well. Moore has been a force this preseason racking up two sacks, three hits and two hurries on just 44 pass rush snaps.

  81. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PERFORMANCES OF NOTE:
WR CHRIS HOGAN, 83.0 OVERALL GRADE
Hogan had four receptions on five targets for 70 yards and 2 touchdowns, doing damage both in the short game and on the deep ball as he went for 32 yards for his second score. Perhaps even more important with WR Julian Edelman going down due to injury, Hogan was a key target for Tom Brady and we may see an expanded role this season. Hogan averaged a gaudy 5.83 yards per route run on the night.

QB TOM BRADY, 76.5 OVERALL GRADE
Brady was sharp early on, completing all 10 of his passes up to 10 yards and going 2-for-4 on deep (20-plus yard) throws for 63 yards. His best throw of the night went to Hogan on the 32-yard touchdown as he hit him in-stride with the “go” route though his worst throw also came down the left sideline as he forced a pass into double coverage on a miscommunication that led to an interception. Brady likely wrapped up his preseason with a solid outing.

CB STEPHON GILMORE, 83.1 OVERALL GRADE
The Patriots decided that they needed some defensive help this offseason, so they went out and signed free agent Gilmore to a big contract to be their newest lockdown corner. Gilmore came out with some strong play in last week’s game, and that continued again against the Lions. Gilmore was on the field for nine coverage snaps and was targeted twice, allowing just one catch for a mere two yards, good for just 0.22 yards per coverage snap allowed. The other target saw saw Gilmore make a beautiful pass defense on a go route to prevent the completion.

EDGE ADAM BUTLER, 87.1 OVERALL GRADE
With rookie edge rusher Derek Rivers going down with an injury, the Patriots are looking for players to help replace what he would have brought to the table at the edge position. Arguably nobody on the Patriots is making a better case than Butler. After an impressive showing last week, Butler came out huge again in this one, racking up four quarterback hurries on just 17 pass-rushing snaps (17.6 pass-rushing productivity score). He also added two solo run stops on just six run snaps, en route to an impressive 85.0 run-defense grade.

  82. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Miami Dolphins
    TOP 5 GRADES:
LB, Lawrence Timmons, 85.7 overall grade

DT Ndamukong Suh, 82.6 overall grade

DE Praise Martin-Oguike, 81.7 overall grade

DE William Hayes, 79.9 overall grade

LB Chase Allen, 79.9 overall grade

    PERFORMANCES OF NOTE:
RB JAY AJAYI, 79.6 OVERALL GRADE
Ajayi was running like he wants the season to start right now. He broke 3 tackles on nine carries and averaged a silly 5.1 yards after contact.

WR DEVANTE PARKER, 79.4 OVERALL GRADE
After Jay Cutler spent the past five seasons with Alshon Jeffery, he may have found his new favorite target. Cutler targeted him twice and the result was 78 yards.

LB LAWRENCE TIMMONS, 85.7 OVERALL GRADE
If Lawrence Timmons played like he did today, he will be reminding Dolphins fans of the linebacker he was in his heyday at Pittsburgh. In only 35 snaps Timmons recorded a pressure and a hit (on 5 pass rushing snaps) and 5 stops on 6 tackles as he was all over the field in the first half.

ED PRAISE MARTIN-OGUIKE, 81.7 OVERALL GRADE
The undrafted edge-rusher from Temple has made a name for himself this whole preseason to the point where it will be hard for the Dolphins to cut him. Against the Eagles, Martin-Oguike recorded just one pressure but was able to beat LT Dillon Gordon on a couple other occasions and record 3 stops in the run game.

  83. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

POSITION BATTLE: ANDRE BRANCH/CHARLES HARRIS, DE
Through two preseason games, rookie Charles Harris is tied for the ninth most hurries among 37 qualified 4-3 DEs at 4, and tied for the 12th most total pressures at 5.
Last season in a much higher sample size, Andre Branch was tied for 17th out of 33 qualified 4-3 defensive ends in hurries at 32, and in total pressures at 46.

  84. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Jay Cutler, QB – As the top quarterback on the depth chart, Cutler should see a lot of playing time in this third preseason contest. He only played 11 snaps last week against Baltimore, which likely means he will get a decent chunk of snaps against the Eagles. Cutler’s recent struggles are well known, as his 2016 grade of 47.1 was the lowest of his career. The Dolphins will be looking for him to bounce back to the 2013 version of Jay Cutler, where he posted an overall grade of 85.6, which was the second highest of his career.

  85. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Julius Thomas, TE – Thomas played 20 of the 55 offensive snaps last week against the Ravens, so expect him to see a lot of playing time against Philadelphia. Thomas struggled last year, posting an overall grade of 58.5, which ranked 35th out of 62 qualified tight ends, and was also the second lowest grade of his career, behind the 44.9 grade he had his rookie season.

  86. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Damien Williams, RB – The fight for the backup running back spot rages on, and Williams will look to play better this week than he has the last two preseason games. Thus far, Williams has an elusive rating (uses missed tackle rate and yards gained after contact to measure a runner’s success beyond the point of being helped by his blockers) of 0.0 in the preseason, which is tied for the worst rating among 87 qualified running backs.

PS stats are not something to get crazy about. It’s still “practice”. RT and the offense went right down the field for a score in Lazor’s debut as OC in the1st PS drive and everyone thought we’d score 40 points per game. Easy big fella. LOL

The RS is a whole different ball game. Even a QB like Brady might want to work on something like the deep out in PS and look shitty doing it. But how else do you practice it in a game environment? That play might get scratched as a bread and butter play because the receivers aren’t good at it. There’s only one way to find out.

I follow ya, Tim… YUP, I do. I suppose I’m talking more about mismatch nightmares like the Patsies* would present to us, more so than other teams. However, there are more and more teams that are trying to emulate the Patsies* with mismatch weapons… such as US.

Consider me as THRILLED that we had THREE 3-down LBs until Raekwon went out for the year. Hopefully, we won’t miss much of a beat with Maualuga as our new MLB. Good points, Bro.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m just trying to play chess with the chess players of the league when it comes to Maualuga, that’s all. I HOPE he doesn’t become a liability.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I get it bro. Here’s an example.

Let’s say we roll with Landry, Stills and Parker, Thomas at TE and Ajayi in the backfield. What formation are you putting on the field as a DC? Go smaller with heavy cover and Ajayi destroys you. Go big and you get beat down field. Pick your poison. It’s about matchups.

I think T.J. McDonald was brought here to be a Gronk matchup late in the season when he’s available and possibly part of the future – it’s up to him. He is a nickel LB/S at 6-3 220+. He can still come up and play the run but can also harass a big TE and intimidate WRs.

If the Pats have whoever at RB and 3 WRs along with Gronk at TE – we have 4 DL, Alonso and Timmons, Howard, CB?, McDonald, Jones and Allen or a nickel corner. The only way they keep us on the field is if we had the personnel matchup we wanted. If they keep beating us and tiring us out, or we do it to other teams. That’s part of the game and you tip your hat.

Know what I mean? There is no perfect remedy or scheme if one is better than the other. That’s what separates good teams from not so good or bad. Pass rush and trench play is still key. If the Jets didn’t have the DL they have they might go 0-16 this year.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

What if the cheats use 2 TEs, 2 WRs, and 1 RB, a base O where you’d use 3 LBs, then they move one of those fast RBs out wide and run no huddle? I’m taking an encroachment soon.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

This isn’t hockey, of course you can change players on a penalty. You would take the penalty when it was advantages, like when it’s 2nd and 1 or 2 or 3 and your team is gased. You cant really use some sheet with set downs/distance it has to be a feel, when you’re losing mo.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Okay fine, but again giving up 5 yards is not what any coach wants to do unless it’s 3rd and 17, so let’s get the right personnel in there on 3rd and 12 because we feel okay encroaching. Ehhh… not sure I want that either.

I still think it’s an overrated scenario in the big picture. It’s not about matchups in a hurry-up, it’s about getting the defense on their heels and tired. Not much you can do about that in any scenario. You’re getting beat. They’re better than you. Stop them!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

That wasn’t the point, the point was he has the skill to be on the field all 3 downs, and when the cheats go hurry up we’d be able to match up with them. Compare Maualuga being on the field in the hurry up.
