Play to stay

For many players still currently on the 2017 Miami Dolphins Roster, this final preseason game, and how they play in it, will determine if they remain on the roster, or are removed from it.  Some bubble players may have already done enough to stay, but others have to fight tooth and nail, and try to show something extraordinary in their last opportunity, preseason Game #4.

Some of the decision comes to down to how many players can they carry at any certain position.  Do we go with 5 or 6 WR’s?  How many OL do we carry, 8 or 9?We’ll probably have 4 RB’s, but are those 4 RB’s currently on the roster now, or do we pick one up?  Do we take 6 CB’s or 7?  I wrote a list, and man, it gets tough.  I figure we only bring 2 QB’s, we did that the last couple of years, so figure we do that again.  I can see us carrying 6 WR’s if they fear Stringfellow would get poached, but I’m not even sure they’re enamored with him enough to feel that way.  I would like to keep him though.

On defense, we know who the likely starters on the D-line are, and I say likely only because there’s still some doubt as to whether it’s God-show or Jordan Phillips. The guys behind the starters are muddled.  We know William Hayes and the loser of the 2nd DT spot are in, but then there’s Okoye, Williams, Fede, and you know Charles Harris is in, but the depth at DT and DE are somewhat up in the air.

baelish-slash

So who gets cut next?

Also remember, we have 2 players who are eligible to come back after week 8, OG Ted Larsen (I/R), and S T.J. McDonald (SUSP)  Both can make a positive impact for our team.  Hopefully the O-line is doing well enough that Larsen isn’t so missed, and the same for Nate Allen at S, that T.J. McDonald isn’t desperately needed.  If all is well, both can slowly be integrated back into the team.

Will Matt Darr hold off Matt Haack?   Will God-show hold onto the starting DT spot next to Suh?  Is Jesse Davis for real, and will he start at LG?  Is Maxwell really in danger  of losing his starting job?  Is our 4th RB currently on the roster?  Questions that may or not be answered after  Preseason game #4.  Some of them may have already been determined by the coaches and front office, but while this last game is meaningless to some, it’s life or death (Dolphins roster life) for others.

If we do end up signing Haden, that’s pretty much it in terms of our cap space. We won’t be able to sign Alan Faneca — for example — unless we make an emergency cut or dip into the Bank of Suh (restructure) again.

My take? I’m not sure we really are interested in signing Haden. I think this is a motivational ploy directed at Byron Maxwell.

They can sign Haden to a one year, vet minimum, prove-it deal. CLE is on the hook for the remainder of $4 M.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Haden ultimately will choose where he wants to go, and if he feels slighted by the Browns, he’s going to go to the Steelers to stick it to them. I think they’re also a stronger playoff contender than we are, at least to the majority of people, Dolphins fans aside.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Correct. However, there are teams who are probably willing and able to afford more than the vet minimum for his services.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

OK, I had a feeling you were talking about Mangold. LOL

I think the thing with Mangold is his health. If he’s in good shape, and ready to go, I suppose he’s always a possibility for some team, but I think the Dolphins want to see what Davis can do or can’t do, or they’ll just go with Steen.

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Faneca is 40 years old, and he hasn’t played in 5 years. Where did you come up with that? Have there been rumors he wants to play?

  8. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The way I see it, Maxwell, who has had his ups and downs, did play very well for a long stretch last season. He’s been here, knows our scheme very well, and has thrived in it. I think Hayden is MORE of a risk than Maxwell, who has already succeeded here. Hard for me to endorse bringing in Hayden. I suppose motivation in CLE could be difficult, but if you’re a pro, you always play. Hayden just wasn’t good last season at all. Last year they both played 13 games, Hayden had 3 INT’s, Maxwell 2, but Maxwell had 15 PD’s compared to 11 for Hayden, AND, Maxwell forced 4 fumbles last season, and he has a propensity to dislodge the football. Just keep Maxwell, and I say forget about Hayden.

I NEVER was a fan of Ragland. SO very happy we didn’t draft him. He just isn’t that good and never was.

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

The Erving trade is freaking ridiculous
The Browns and Bills are trying to outdo one another with piling up draft picks (that they will probably waste)
He a 1st rounder from 2015 who started 13 games for them last year

    That’s just pure FO failure

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Pretty clear both are more concerned about the future than winning this year. Maybe the NFL is becoming more like the NBA…….goes on long enough and maybe football puts in the draft lottery.

  16. If the Phins do anything on defense they’re acquiring a LB

  17. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

It’s really hard to look at stats when comparing CBs. Who would you rather have the guy that has 4 picks 20 passes defended or the guy with 2 picks and 8 PDs? Looking at just the stats it’s easy, but what if the 2nd only gets 2 passes thrown his way per game? Changes a lot.

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Nice by Schad on Gase and Cutler, including:

““He was coming out of Vandy. I picked him up at the airport… We just kept bumping into each other as far as guys in the league and people that we’ve been around. We just keep crossing over a lot. We just kept in touch.”

    http://dailydolphin.blog.palmbeachpost.com/2017/08/30/miami-dolphins-coach-adam-gase-explains-the-jay-cutler-he-trusts/

  19. Now think about this. NFL Network saying if Haden leaves PIT without a deal he’s most likely signing with the Dolphins. Of course at this time this is pure speculation because there’s no way of knowing the Phins level of interest in Haden &, personally, I don’t think they would sign him because he doesn’t fit the prototype cb on the outside they seem to like.
However, let’s say they do sign him and they either trade Maxwell or let him go for the purpose of making room for Haden’s cap hit, what does that say about Landry? Again, just speculation, but if they did sign Haden and Max is gone then they’ve GOT (no Game Of Thrones reference) to be looking to unload Landry.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Can Haden play inside in slot? I seem to remember he does.

  21. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Let’s play 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon to trade Landry

    1: Browns cut Hayden
    2: Pitt doesn’t sign Hayden
    3: Dolphins sign Hayden
4: Dolphins cut Maxwell (because nobody is trading for him)
5: “We represent the lollipop guild, the lollipop guild, the lollipop guild. We wish to welcome you to munchkin land.”
    6: Dolphins trade Landry

An irrefutable chain of logic that cannot be denied.

As long as you have 90 or maybe 88 or whatever, you can do it. 75 not so much with injuries etc. For instance Hewitt hasn’t played in the PS at all and he should be the 3rd or 4th LB or in a rotation. Hopefully he can go on opening day. We need him.

I did my FF draft for my wife’s work league, think I ended up with a pretty damn good squad. David Johnson, Amari Cooper, Aaron Rodgers, Tevin Coleman, Latavius Murray, Devante Parker, Sammy Watkins, Kenny Stills, Tyler Eifert, Stephen Gostkowski, NYG DEF. Overall, very happy with my team.

ROCK: THOSE on this site who never had the historic “Orange Bowl Experience” truly missed one of life’s greatest moments IMHO. It was the greatest home field advantage I’ve ever witnessed. It was no coincidence that both the longest home field winning streak in college football (UM’s 59 game winning streak) and the Dolphins’ incredible home winning record from 1971 through 1974 both occurred IN THE SAME PLACE. To say those of us who were lucky enough to be there WERE SPOILED would be an understatement of vast proportions.

What did I learn from the historic Orange Bowl? I learned to revel in the experience. And I learned to get the most I could out of any football game I attended. Do you think drunk, rude, Jets’ fans could stop us from “enjoying the experience?” NOT A CHANCE IN HELL!!! –Over time, the Orange Bowl became HELL for visiting teams!! And when we lost, it made history (the San Diego-Miami overtime classic)!! I woulodn’t trade those experiences for ANYTHING!! Don’t get too bent out of shape man. I kind of figured out what Lou was all about when he ran to twitter to tell the world to stay away from here because we’re all a bunch of douchebags. That’s a kids mentality. I know you also take twitter more seriously than I do, but your standard of followers just went up when you lost Prof Lou. Carry on!

Admit it….Home is really your alter ego.

    ******************************************************

I’m pretty sure Lou isn’t Home FWIW.

I get it: everyone is mad at Lou bc of what he posted which called us all a dbag on twitter

I’m recommending dropping it and laying off him. I said before I’m too old to get mad at the little things. I’ve been called a lot worse than a douchebag…and sometimes…I’m kind of douchbag…lol

You guys are obviously free to make your own decisions. But I’m over it and frankly its just not a good look for the blog to attack each other especially when football is in the air

    (piggy farts)

also…there are other things in the air

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I don’t really care what Lou does, and whether he’s Home, Home’s cousin, Uncle, Grandmother whatever. I’m not mad at him, but I think he’s far worse than a douchebag for running to twitter like a 12 year old girl and telling everyone to stay way from this blog, and then come back on here himself and still post. Pretty sure I’m going to keep up the “Douchebag Campaign”, until I get tired of it, or he stops posting here.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mostly because I think the douchebag thing is kinda funny.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We all have the right to do what we do, but am with Pig on this one. How many people have said they are never coming back over the years only to still be here? Guess the difference in this one is Lou took it outside the blog, but that option was not there in years past……still just a hissy fit thing though. And he still came back after. Only person ever banned from this place was Home, but that was for trying to stop the place from working rather than what he actually said.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Both Mike E and Piggy are correct. Lou’s twitter post is an insult and affront to all of us here. That said keeping a running feud/posting about probably is not a good look for the blog. I will drop it from here on out.

I can’t make any promises. When it comes to taking digs at know it also, I have very little discipline. For instance, if Lou Lou was here right now, I would have to ask him what color his GM BarcaLounger is, notwithstanding the sweat stains, of course.

  65. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

    My $0.02……

Fact that Lou said what he did outside of here, then comes and seems to ignore the fact he did anything at all to insult the people here. That’s the strange part for me to understand. I’m guessing if he owned up to it, explained it a bit and maybe not even have to apologize, it would be over and done.

M on here just asking for explanation of his blocking is another head scratcher.

Man up. We all say and do stupid crap. None of which a simple apology or explanation won’t fix on this blog. For a bunch of douchebags, everyone here is forgiving and good people. It’s a football blog, why so serious?

  66. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

  69. D's avatar D says:

Ill do a post, even though i will probably will regret it. I have deliberately kept away despite a strong desire to post my opinions on upcoming cuts, etc, and yes i do still stop by to read from time to time. I have stopped posting here, though, because it began feeling like every time i did someone had snide things to say, not just to disagree with me, which i can live with, but do it to a degree it was obvious they didn’t care for my comments, or perhaps just didn’t care for me at all. I have had times where my integrity was called into question. There have been insults made towards me or disregard for my opinions simply because of where i am from, my belief system etc. A lot of it i spent years brushing off, and moving past but it got to be more common than uncommon when i finally just said, for my own well being, Im done.

Ironically, Lou was one of the people who did this, so calling the rest of y’all out for it seems very pot-kettle. I am sure to some of y’all i was a douche-bag, though i cant really think of any one person i really singled out and attacked their comments on a daily. Maybe i was a lot of yalls douche-bag, maybe thats why i cant think of one specific person because there were just so many lol. Maybe i wasn’t of consequence either way, i really dunno. Still If i was that guy for you, i accept the blame for this and im sorry. I do hope that either the separation i made from this board has made things better for you and maybe even given some time to heal wounds, the way the separation has allowed me to somewhat heal my own. Im not sure ill ever ready to be the poster i use to be but its possible ill swing by a little more for book long drive-byes.

Back on the subject of Lou’s twitter post, I guess what im saying is i fully agree that Lou had no reason to do that, and it should have been handled different, and in a more mature fashion, but i also believer his assertions aren’t fully incorrect either. There do exist issues, with people and situations that occur here, that make his comments no 100% off mark. It would do this place a lot of good for the people who make these comments to stop hiding behind their excuses, their righteous indignation, and their passive aggressive comments to admit they are a bit of a douche-bag and they could change themselves to make this community better. Im pretty sure most of you are moral enough to know when what you have said hit these marks, but maybe the guilt just doesn’t weight heavily enough on you to really feel bad about it. Search yourself, do whats right.

Enough of raining and yalls parade. Douche-bag signing off. Deep down i still very much love you guys, and love this board, im just not sure i can post here anymore. This also might have been too deep for a drive bye, and im sorry for that but part of me has been wanting to say something about my abrupt departure, and this subject just brought it out of me. I really just hit my limit. You can return to your regularly scheduled programming now. Thank you for all of those who took the time to read this narrative, and for those who skipped this because they don’t like to read my books of typing… well i guess despite skipping it, the post still let you know im still alive.

Go-Dolphins, and hope you all get shit worked out so you can enjoy the season, it should be a interesting one at least.

I mostly lurk here and just wanted to tell you D that skimming thru your books was always a good read.

hey the reason i posted all those PFF stats is it seems like half the teams out there have former players of ours that are doing well for them … even starting. That must mean the guys we kept are better than the guys who are starting all around the league.

I mean I moan about losing 7-11, but I would rather have our Big 3 than him so he would be battling Caroo for WR4.

Jelani Jenkins is another quality player, but I’d rather have Kikio, Timmons, and Raekwon.
