Play to stay

For many players still currently on the 2017 Miami Dolphins Roster, this final preseason game, and how they play in it, will determine if they remain on the roster, or are removed from it.  Some bubble players may have already done enough to stay, but others have to fight tooth and nail, and try to show something extraordinary in their last opportunity, preseason Game #4.

Some of the decision comes to down to how many players can they carry at any certain position.  Do we go with 5 or 6 WR’s?  How many OL do we carry, 8 or 9?We’ll probably have 4 RB’s, but are those 4 RB’s currently on the roster now, or do we pick one up?  Do we take 6 CB’s or 7?  I wrote a list, and man, it gets tough.  I figure we only bring 2 QB’s, we did that the last couple of years, so figure we do that again.  I can see us carrying 6 WR’s if they fear Stringfellow would get poached, but I’m not even sure they’re enamored with him enough to feel that way.  I would like to keep him though.

On defense, we know who the likely starters on the D-line are, and I say likely only because there’s still some doubt as to whether it’s God-show or Jordan Phillips. The guys behind the starters are muddled.  We know William Hayes and the loser of the 2nd DT spot are in, but then there’s Okoye, Williams, Fede, and you know Charles Harris is in, but the depth at DT and DE are somewhat up in the air.

baelish-slash

So who gets cut next?

Also remember, we have 2 players who are eligible to come back after week 8, OG Ted Larsen (I/R), and S T.J. McDonald (SUSP)  Both can make a positive impact for our team.  Hopefully the O-line is doing well enough that Larsen isn’t so missed, and the same for Nate Allen at S, that T.J. McDonald isn’t desperately needed.  If all is well, both can slowly be integrated back into the team.

Will Matt Darr hold off Matt Haack?   Will God-show hold onto the starting DT spot next to Suh?  Is Jesse Davis for real, and will he start at LG?  Is Maxwell really in danger  of losing his starting job?  Is our 4th RB currently on the roster?  Questions that may or not be answered after  Preseason game #4.  Some of them may have already been determined by the coaches and front office, but while this last game is meaningless to some, it’s life or death (Dolphins roster life) for others.

My ex-wife’s little sister had a baby 4 years ago and I bought her all kinds of Dolphins gear because their dad (Granddad) is a Yet’s fan. I laughed my ass off when he came in and saw her in Dolphins gear and was like “oh, no! NO, NO, NO, NO, NO” and tried to take her out of the dolphins onesy I had bought and the baby screamed bloody murder about it until he gave up. I was like “see, even infants know better Bob”

He just looked at me and shook his head “This is all your fault” I was like “it’s my fault that your grand daughter is smarter than you?” LOL

Dar & Haack had pretty even performances this camp. Neck & neck. I think it comes down to Haack being cheaper and being a left foot kicker which give returners problems handling the ball.

Keep in mind, Matt Darr was set to become a FA after this year. He would have cost way more money than we generally like to spend on STs players. Darr gets to have a say who he’ll be able to play for this year. In a way, it was a classy move by our organization to allow him to have control of where he goes next.

We would have to sign Kaaya wouldn’t we?

How many QBs do we keep on the 53

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah and keep him for 3 games on the 53 man roster before releasing him and hoping he clears waivers again so we can put him on the PS. We’re not keeping 3 QBs on the roster especially with all the injuries we’ve already had. He won’t be an active body.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Oh wait, that’s if you poach a PS player. Not sure how you can sign a guy and then just put him on the PS.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I guess they have to clear waivers. Then you can sign them to your PS.

I’d say we add maybe 1 or 2 players to our 53 and maybe 4-5 to the PS from other teams. I think we’ll keep a lot of our own.

  70. D's avatar D says:

You can poach during this period, they have to be cut by their team and when they are they are basically free agents and can sign with any team to become part of their PS. In the regular season you have to sign them to your active roster then cut them and resign to PS in order to poach, which of course is a much more difficult thing to pull off.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If a team doesn’t sign them to the 53 man right? I’m sure they look for that first. Teams with no franchise QB or quality backup will have first dibs on a guy like Kaaya. He’s not making our 53.

    • D's avatar D says:

Maybe poach was a bad term. I mean we grab a guy they were hoping to resign to PS not literally sign them off their PS. I can see how that was confusing.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Poach is used when a team signs a guy off another team’s PS. That’s when you have to have them on your 53 man for 3 games before putting them on your PS. That’s the protection for teams stealing guys from each other for their PS.

  71. D's avatar D says:

I’d be keeping the loser of the Allen – Lacey battle for sure. Neither are great but both are almost there as far as being worth a depth spot. Same for Stringfellow – Morgan battle or both if neither are kept in the 53.

  73. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Once a guy clears waivers he can sign with anyone. A team can’t claim a guy off waivers and put him on the Practice Squad, the PS is free agent signings. If you claim off waivers he goes on your roster and if you want him on PS he’d have to clear waivers again first.

I’m ambidextrous about 65/35 dominant righty. I can throw from each side, switch hit, more power righty, more contact lefty but still some power, but hockey I’m exclusively righty. Same on guitar. My friend who is lefty plays guitar righty and that’s why his fretboard hand is so dominant. I have a good right picking hand, my fret hand was never up to par in my mind. Always wanted to be better. It’s crazy the traits you develop.

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

D, I confused myself as you can see. LOL

Doughty seems to have everything you want in a QB except for his arm. It’s not NFL caliber. Fales doesn’t have one either. Don’t get too drawn in about some deep passes they’ve made. There is more to making throws in the NFL then letting it loose down the field – the deep out 8-12 but a really wide throw that needs zip, a 10-15+ crossing route with zip, posts over the middle of the field with authority. Neither of them have that.

I think we’ll draft a QB mid rounds next year who has an NFL arm even if there are other warts in their game. Maybe some can be corrected. Arm strength not so much.

Piggy, back in the early 80’s even though many 70’s bands like Yes, Zep and Floyd were already broken up, that was what my friends and I were listening too along with a lot of other stuff obviously. The girls who liked these bands were happy girls. 😉

Praise my-hyphenated-last-name to me is a keeper. Morgan and Stringfellow are keepers. Allen and Lacey are keepers. Storm Johnson, McTyer, De’Veon Smith, Eric Smith, Maurice Smith, and Taylor are all fringe guys I kinda like to see us keep either on active or PS. There are a few I just don’t see them doing anything for us and it looks like from some of y’all’s reports, we already gave them notice anyways.

GIVING UP a TD in the final seconds of the first half was a crusher for FAU. But give Navy credit. Once again, they have a Top-25 team that figures to give the big boys plenty of trouble. They’re well conditioned, smart, very determined, and their coach is terrific! If FAU gives up a touchdown to Navy on the opening drive of the 3rd quarter, this game will become a rout. But maybe Kiffen’s got a little more magic up his sleeve. We’ll see.

Son, Kendrick’s asked for them to trade him, which I hear they were looking to do, but I’m not sure they would cut him. I don’t think his contract is one that nets them much back. They might take a something instead of nothing kind of trade but they probably would at least take it down to the wire if they did a cut

If PS is any indication, they are going to let the DBs get away with a lot more this season

I use to visit a friend who lived in Houston, and I remember a lot if the roads that I’ve seen in pictures posted here and on the internet, and it’s just crazy how one of those scene’s look. I had a hard time figuring out where some of them were and once I did I was even more shocked, because I should have easily recognised them

One of the worst drunken experiences I ever had was on car bombs, or I should say started out with car bombs. It ended up with drinking whatever was passed in front of me. Car bombs are so heavy though I’m pretty sure it was what made me sick.
