Play to stay

For many players still currently on the 2017 Miami Dolphins Roster, this final preseason game, and how they play in it, will determine if they remain on the roster, or are removed from it.  Some bubble players may have already done enough to stay, but others have to fight tooth and nail, and try to show something extraordinary in their last opportunity, preseason Game #4.

Some of the decision comes to down to how many players can they carry at any certain position.  Do we go with 5 or 6 WR’s?  How many OL do we carry, 8 or 9?We’ll probably have 4 RB’s, but are those 4 RB’s currently on the roster now, or do we pick one up?  Do we take 6 CB’s or 7?  I wrote a list, and man, it gets tough.  I figure we only bring 2 QB’s, we did that the last couple of years, so figure we do that again.  I can see us carrying 6 WR’s if they fear Stringfellow would get poached, but I’m not even sure they’re enamored with him enough to feel that way.  I would like to keep him though.

On defense, we know who the likely starters on the D-line are, and I say likely only because there’s still some doubt as to whether it’s God-show or Jordan Phillips. The guys behind the starters are muddled.  We know William Hayes and the loser of the 2nd DT spot are in, but then there’s Okoye, Williams, Fede, and you know Charles Harris is in, but the depth at DT and DE are somewhat up in the air.

baelish-slash

So who gets cut next?

Also remember, we have 2 players who are eligible to come back after week 8, OG Ted Larsen (I/R), and S T.J. McDonald (SUSP)  Both can make a positive impact for our team.  Hopefully the O-line is doing well enough that Larsen isn’t so missed, and the same for Nate Allen at S, that T.J. McDonald isn’t desperately needed.  If all is well, both can slowly be integrated back into the team.

Will Matt Darr hold off Matt Haack?   Will God-show hold onto the starting DT spot next to Suh?  Is Jesse Davis for real, and will he start at LG?  Is Maxwell really in danger  of losing his starting job?  Is our 4th RB currently on the roster?  Questions that may or not be answered after  Preseason game #4.  Some of them may have already been determined by the coaches and front office, but while this last game is meaningless to some, it’s life or death (Dolphins roster life) for others.

Jeremy Uttah, G/C (veteran minimal, non-guaranteed post Game 1); Emmett Cleary, T/G; Brad Kaaya, QB (PS); Hunter Dimick, DE (PS); Kenjon Barner, RB; Willie Beavers, G; Tony McDaniel, DT (veteran minimal, non-guaranteed post Game 1); Dane Evans, QB (PS); Jace Amaro, TE (is he still PS eligible under the new rules?); Fish Smithson, S (PS); Lynden Trail, LB (PS); Shilique Calhoun, EDGE.

So did Lippett going down. McDonald being out half the season also altered the roster. McMillan, Larsen and Urbik too.

  4. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I do think OL and LB are on the radar. I know Perry is nursing a minor knee injury but he showed some KR ability, other STs roles and as a RB. He’s not going to see much time on offense as long as the other 3 are good to go. Any RB we replace him with has to play STs.

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I like what I saw in LB Chase Allen. He didn’t have one play or one game, he’s been good in camp and showed up in every PS game. It would be great if he was a diamond in the rough. Good size, speed and strength. We could use it.

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I agree we need to add a QB to develop who has an NFL arm. Not sure any PS squad QB will ever be that. Maybe 3-5 rd next year and to even push Moore.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I believe Kaaya has an NFL arm. He needs to be developed (as in, he should have stayed at the “U” for one more season), but he’ll be solid in due time, IMO. We’ll see…

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What I should have said is that a PS QB won’t be the next backup. I think we need to target that in the draft next year. But you never know.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

History is with ya, for sure! But ya never know is right… I’d take a chance on Kaaya. And if he doesn’t pan out for us on our PS this year, draft one next year is right. I’m with ya, Bro.

Honestly, and I’m not saying it to be a smartass, I wouldn’t consider any of them. This would be something the old regime might do but it’s time to move forward and get better thru addition and none of these guys are doing that for us. JMHO

All good, Prof Lou. No offense taken. We’re all entitled to our own opinions and we’re all entitled to disagree.

  8. When you think about it, the fact that Young and Urbik are not on the team is a good thing. They may have served their purpose at one point but you’re not going to continue to improve if you keep the same back end players around who have no upside.
I suppose there will be a point at which Steen has outlived his usefulness to this team and it will be time for him to move on.
It’s a business and you’re in it to win it or why bother? We’ve got some promising young players on the team and we’ve got a good mix of young guys and vets. Not quite there yet but, damn!, we’re getting close.
You have to agree, the offensive line is looking better than it’s been. As long as they stay healthy as a group we should be pretty good there; probably better than last season.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. Pouncey, Tunsil and James being what they’re projected to be is key. When that breaks down, the entire unit starts to struggle. It’s science.

Add Cole Toner, G (Arizona Cardinals), as another player I’d kick the tires on… it was just announced he was released.

  10. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There is a good chance we use all 6 of our LBs throughout the season if there isn’t much change. Outside of some creative stuff we probably didn’t show in the PS, we really are a box LB system with all 3 LBs inside the DEs with a S cheating up or at least showing it. It comes down to communication and tackling more than anything. Our LB coverage is mostly zone. I also noticed we like to play a deep center field safety often. There’s a lot of new on this defense. Hopefully we can gel sooner than later.

STANTON Hits home run #52 in the 1st inning tonight. He’s now a legitimate threat to top Roger Maris’ pre-steroids record of 61 home runs in a season. Barring injury, I think Stanton does it!!
—Saw Kaaya in person against FAU at Hard Head Stadium last year. DON’T think he’s ever going to be an NFL starting QB. I’d rather have Beavers on our practice squad. Ken, Piggy and Son, what do you think of Beavers?

I recorded the game and watched it around 4pm. He was a beast- looked like a man among boys. He played a minute or two into the 4th. He didn’t get too many touches, but made the most of them. He has an unbelievable combination of power, speed and quickness. He has great (not merely good) hands, and can block. There really isn’t anything he can do. He will probably go top 5 in the draft next year, possibly top 10 based on team needs. You know who he reminded me of yesterday? Ricky.
You know who would look great in aqua and orange next year? Mike Gesicki…

And if more happens in the next few days, the number just goes up.
Is that a large turnover? Seems like a lot (a little more than 43%)
Especially since WR has no changes.

    • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

I wonder what is normal turnover for other teams. I can remmember in the old days teams would get 4-5 new players a year only and that was from draft draft.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So if we replaced lesser players with better players*** and did that with almost half the team, then shouldn’t we by logic be a better team than last year?

We did not lose Lamar Miller and Olivier Vernon type players like some teams do some years, where the new guys might not be as good. We replaced inferior players with either better veteran players or at least younger, faster players of similar quality.

***exception = counting Cutler for Tannehill as a slight downgrade

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I see the new players as a good thing, mostly LB, DE, TE. I see DE as possibly the best we’ve ever had.

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On Landry, I hope his investigation draws out as long as possibly with a suspension next year. That will give us some much needed leverage in negotiations. The possible improvement of Grant may also help to make Landry expendable.

We definitely improved at TE, DE, and LB. And those were huge areas of need to improve.
At S, Nate Allen for IAQ is a wash, LG is a wash, P is a wash.
WR got better as Parker, Caroo, and Grant all seem to have improved.
QB is a slight downgrade in athleticism but not talent, and the scheme fit might be better.
DT is a wash with the pups replacing Big Earl and Nick Williams.
Fresh legs at back-up OL, otherwise a wash.
CB, well Lippett to Verner is a wash. Tankersley is an improved back-up.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol at WR. You bring up the count of new players, then say we’re better at WR, so we’re better at WR, because we replaced no one.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

well my point was that even where we have zero new players, anyone can see that 3 out of the 5 holdovers are playing way better than they did last year, so that is why there are no new players at that position.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I know what your point was, but your previous post was about new players, and all other responses were about new players.

  42. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Of course teams will still be interested, but you don’t think it lowers his salary?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

But it might stop US from giving him a big raise, as that would seem to be rewarding wife-beating, which has recently become a no-no for some NFL management.

  43. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I never really cared that much for Darr from a pure execution stand point, he wasn’t better than Fields, his inside the 20 placement was poor. Some douchebag is going to bring up some stat…but I’m talking about his lack of inside the 10 and 5 punts.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There had to be some reason they replaced him. The left-footed spin is a thing for Bellicheat and Gase is emulating the Dark Master, sooo

A C? Half the starters are Pro-Bowl, top five at the position, top 100 players. What other team has that plus a #1 round draft choice as a back-up.

IT NOW APPEARS that, sometime Friday or Saturday, Hurricane Irma, projected to be a cat 4 storm by then, will be fairly close to the Bahamas or the Florida Keys and possibly threatening the southern half of Florida by Saturday. Given that scenario, THERE’S NO WAY the Bucs and the Dolphins will play on Sunday!!! A nice curve out to the Atlantic Ocean AWAY from Florida would be GREAT, and certainly remains a possibility. But I would not be shocked if this game has to be rescheduled for, say, Monday Night or Tuesday Night at Hard Head Stadium. A less likely option would be Friday Night, especially if Irma significantly slows her forward speed and doesn’t arrive until Sunday or later.

  48. Cutler may not be as athletic as Tannehill but he moves around in the pocket and avoids the rush, buys time, better than Tannehill ever did. He’s been doing that for years. That play vs the Eagles where he threw the ball into the ground to avoid the sack would have been a huge loss of yards if Tannehill were in there because he wouldn’t have had the wherewithal to do the same thing.

  51. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Naples: Moving the Bucs-Dolphins game to Tampa won’t work for a number of reasons:
    1) The game is a sellout. The RayJay is smaller than Hard Head, EVEN IF ticket holders could get their tix switched to Tampa (they CAN’T) many in Miami area could NOT/WOULD NOT travel to Tampa if their homes in southeast Florida were threatened by Irma. They’d bitch like HELL against a last minute move!!
    2) ROSS would lose too much money in food, beer, and parking sales. Air conditioned sky box sales would have to be refunded–NO CHANCE ROSS DOES THAT!!!
    3) USF has a home game Thursday Night at the RayJay (ILLINOIS). Many Illini fans may NOT be able to return home if Airports are closed on the Weekend. And broadcast crews may NOT be able to get to Tampa in that scenario.
    ———–
BOTTOM LINE IS THIS: Game COULD be played at Hard Head Friday Night before the storm or Monday/Tuesday Night AFTER the storm. Other possibilities seem remote/non-existant.

    • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

Right now, if I were Ross, I’d be checking out Friday Night as the best alternate option. Virtually NO CHANCE IRMA gets real close to Miami on Friday. And a 7:30 Kickoff gives fans a chance to get back home, no matter what part of the state they are driving from.

Not saying they can’t move to a different day, but they can also change to nearby cities. The closest city to Miami is Tampa, as Orlando and Jax might still be in the path of the storm and TB would have the infrastructure in place to host more easily anyway than Camping World Stadium might.

I am not impressed with the LB Lillard from Akron with no sacks, no INTs, no FF, no passes defensed, and 15 tackles in 22 games. He only weighs 222. He better be real fast.

Andrew is the one every one talks about as newbees like me are going hasn’t been a big hit in more than a decade. How far from the water are you? I’m far enough off that just past the last possible evacuation zone they have planned for if the storm of the century hits.
    ———————————————————————————————————————
Believe me you are in danger if a Andrew hit from the eastern part of Broward. I moved up from dade to broward after 2 weeks of the recovery because of the extensive damage being told it would take 5-10 yrs to fully recover. I was probably 20 miles in from the eastern part of beach. I’m now living about 3-4 miles from the everglades (holiday park is very close) and lots of these houses were damaged and probably 1/2 the trees were knocked down. Ficus trees were no match. The city of Weston was developed mostly because of the people escaping from the recovery in South Miami. In fact, Dan Marino was a spokesperson for weston development and received a multimillion dollar house in western hills for 100 pennies with free golf membership also..

Sounds like you are well inland and as well-protected in your house as you can be, but believe me know that I am not safe either. We all saw what Andrew, Katrina and Harvey did. Same time figure am safe from both storm surge and flooding. And my place was built after the strict codes that came in after Andrew. They say good for up to 155 mph winds, but who knows?

People always look at the winds that are reported from the weather news people. That number they give you is sustained winds. The gusts of winds swirling around are much higher although they are not sustained winds. I wasn’t prepared for Andrew because we had just closed on the house and we were just finished moving in.The house that we were interested in was on the lake but we decided to go with corner lot.. The house on the lake didn’t fair to good in that half of the roof and back walls CBS block were knocked completely down. Our roof was 1/2 gone from the kitchen sliding glass doors exploding and wind coming in. I never found the hurricane shutters after the cleanup started. The builder said they supplied shutters with the house. I have never felt so helpless in my life protecting my family and myself. My wife and me cried but we never showed this emotion in front of the kids. The 1st few weeks after Andrew scarred us to where we wanted to hide in bathroom.

JS — just glad I didn’t live through Andrew like you did. Sounds like you are all set up if the same comes again though as best you can and even the best in your neighborhood. Props to you for protecting your family against that happening again.

  77. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I don’t know shit about these hurricanes any longer, but I have this weird feeling that it’s not going any further west than the eastern side of the Bahamas, and will curl back out to sea without hitting the US. And if it does hit the US South Carolina will be the southern mist point.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That is certainly a valid trajectory.
The most frequent path is for them to either do that or side swipe Florida and bump up the coast to hit NC because they stick out there into the ocean.
The problem with Andrew was it cam in very high and hit Miami perpendicular to the coast.
In other words, head on instead of at an angle. Andrew hit us here in Naples on the West Coast over a 100 miles away across swamp which usually dissipates strength.
We were battered badly by Andrew even so.

      • jetsssuck's avatar jetsssuck says:

the weather forecast was for the dade/broward line. I was trying to get to broward county and was witnessing 5-10 story building in dade without any walls and I was thinking to myself what dade/broward line was going to be like if it existed anymore.

Franks was just as nerve racking as Sturgis.
And if I’m worried about the punter, there’s much bigger issues going on.

  79. Man, there seems to be a thinness at LB in this league this year unlike anything I’ve ever seen.

  80. Colts released Schwenke AND Zach Banner. One would be nice depth & the other would be nice developmental player on the PS.

  81. Punters & kickers can have a big impact on a game. Glad the team isn’t staying complacent anywhere including those areas. Special teams is a big part of the game.

  82. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe over the next couple of weeks we may see a move or two and then during the season the typical bottom churning due to injuries or whatever, our roster seems pretty much set. We need quite a few young players to be productive. Looking forward to seeing a real game to see where we’re at. TB is a good opponent to start with. They have talent.

  88. Trevor Reilly cut for March-Lillard

  89. Wasn’t a big fan of Chase Allen coming out but after watching him play in preseason it would appear as though the game isn’t too big for him

  90. Phins have 12 udfa’s on their roster which puts to rest the argument “they went undrafted for a reason”.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not really, it’s no different than why some guys go in mid and late rounds. There are reasons for that. it doesn’t mean UDFAs can’t make a team or become good players.

Are you counting the likes of Matt Moore, D. Williams, Parkey and Haack etc.?

      • Forgot about Moore and didn’t realize Parkey was. But, you can find players in any rd or from those who went undrafted. Just because a player is undrafted doesn’t mean he won’t make a team and just because he’s a higher rd pick, like Shilique Calhoun, doesn’t mean he won’t get cut.
So, yeah, it doesn’t mean anything when a guy goes undrafted so the comment “he went undrafted for a reason” is usually one made in hindsight when a player doesn’t work out.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I posted an article about his pro day the other day. He has the size, strength, speed and athleticism. He seems to be instinctive and always around the ball making tackles. What made the scouts leery of him?

I really hope he becomes a gem. We could use it.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Mark Clayton was drafted in the 8th rd when it was a 12 man draft. John Randle one of the best pass rushing DTs and leaders on defense went undrafted. So yeah there are plenty of guys who fall through the cracks and become top performers while high picks bust out. This is what creates the phrase that “the draft is not a perfect science”.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I counted 18 undrafted players on our roster over the course of many years.
