The Dolphins travel to New Jersey to take on their hated rivals the New York Jets this Sunday. The Jets, already 0-2, losing to the Bills in Week 1, and then last week, losing to the Raiders, in what was a more competitive game than I ever expected, at least in the 1st half. 2 teams that appear to be going in different directions. The NY Jets seem to be working their way to the top of the draft board, in order to secure the chance to get themselves a franchise QB, while the Dolphins, who were in the playoffs last season at 10-6, look to get back to the playoffs, and build on last season’s success.
It has been a wacky few days for the Miami Dolphins. Starting OLB Lawrence Timmons went missing before the game Sunday, which forced the Dolphins to move rookie OLB Chase Daniels in to the starting lineup. Daniels barely played, seeing only 13 total snaps, as the Dolphins defense was in the nickel most of the game against the Chargers. As of yesterday, the Dolphins have suspended Lawrence Timmons indefinitely, but apparently, the max allowable suspension according to the league is 4 weeks. In the meantime, the Dolphins continue to surge forward, acquiring former 2015 1st RD pick LB Stephone Anthony from the Saints in exchange for a 2018 5th RD draft pick. Anthony did not play either of the first 2 games with New Orleans as he’s dealing with a high ankle sprain that he hasn’t fully recovered from.
The thing that I admire about our front office is that they haven’t panicked, they have a setback, and they address it in a responsible manner. We lost Ryan Tannehill to injury, they quickly formed a plan, and brought in QB Jay Cutler, out of retirement, to be our starting QB. No hesitation, and no going off the deep end. Cutler is under contract for this year, and then they can see what happens, and work it from there. Now we lost our starting LB, and they once again acted quickly, and brought in another player, a player with an awesome physical skillset, but also a player that has struggled with the mental portion of the game, but is still on his rookie contract. Whether Anthony is physically ready to play now, none of us know. How long it will take him to mentally be ready to play for us, again, we don’t know. The point is, we’re not giving up on this season, and I like seeing that.
Alright, let’s get back to this weeks game, against the New York Jets. The Jets still have some impressive pieces on defense even after jettisoning one of their stars, DL Sheldon Richardson. The 3-4 front is still formidable, with DE’s Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson bookending NT Steve McLendon. Although they cut David Harris, they still have some talent in their LB corps, with Josh Martin, Darron Lee, Demario Davis and Jordan Jenkins. They also have 2 capable corners in Buster Skrine and Morris Claiborne, and of course, the 2 rookie safeties that were both drafted high by the Jets, SS Jamal Adams 1st RD (6th overall, and Marcus Maye, 2nd RD (39th overall). There is definitely some good young talent on this defense, but on the other side of the ball, it is pretty ugly.
Josh McCown is the starting QB at the moment, and while he’s relatively competent, he’s a journeyman QB who has had limited success in the NFL, his best campaign was in 2013 where he took over for an injured Jay Cutler (yeah, THAT Jay Cutler), and posted a 3-2 record with 13 TD’s and only 1 INT. Since then, with TB, CLE , and now the NYJ, he’s thrown 31 TD’s and 27 INT’s, His backfield of Matt Forte and Bilal Powell was pretty good last year, but Forte is now 31, and we know most RB’s tend to really fall off once they reach 30, so I don’t expect all that much trouble from Matt Forte. Bilal Powell is a very good receiver out of the backfield, and has burned us on numerous occasions. Both backs have good hands, but Powell has the speed to beat LB’s around the edge and over the middle. At widout, the Jets have WR Robbie Anderson (Who?) and newly acquired former Seahawks veteran WR Jermaine Kearse. Kearse has quickly become one of McCown’s favorite targets, and rightfully so. Kearse has the only 2 receiving TD’s for the Jets.
It will be interesting to see who defends Devante Parker, is it the 5’9″ Buster Skrine, or the 5’11” Morris Claiborne? Either one will have his hands full with Parker, who has shown that he wants every pass thrown in his vicinity, and will get it! I expect a similar approach to the game as last week, run the ball as much as we can as long as we’re having success, but in the passing game, we might just try to exploit the young safeties and smaller CB’s deep, and take a few more shots than we did last week. I also expect Julius Thomas to get a little more involved in the game this week. I’m thinking we’ll get a good lead, and then cruise in this one.
I’m going MIA 30 – NYJ 13
Go DOLPHINS! Zero in!

Nice job Mike E
Good write up Mike.
From the last blog, I get a kick out of how valued 5th rd picks are to people when we trade them, then when we draft someone in the 5th we say stuff like we may have waited too long to address a position by waiting until the 5th – Asiata for instance. Funny how that works.
LOL – We’re all freaking hypocrites! I know I do that! 🙂

“The thing that I admire about our front office is that they haven’t panicked, they have a setback, and they address it in a responsible manner.”
No truer words ever written…….this team probably has target lists in case some guy on the practice squad goes down already in place.
I have to admit, it’s much, much different than I expected with T-Bomb here. It’s great to see. I guess between he and Grier, he’s been able to calm his itch to make knee-jerk moves.
I’ve always felt that Tannenbaum being this crazy trade guy was over exaggerated. He made a few trades over many years and people act like he trades his entire drafts away. With the Jets they were trying to win it all and they came close twice. He tries to win and that’s what we’re doing here.
Had the same concern, but now think he was just going to what Rexy wanted even if via the owner. Which means he’s just a pro who executes….exactly what we need with Gase as Ross’ chosen one.
I go to the NFL standing page every day even though it doesn’t change. I just like seeing Miami at the top of the division that much.
LOL
What’s interesting is, each team in our division, besides the Jets, are separated by 3 points max in their points scored – points allowed. Even the Patriots are only +1, we’re +2, and the Bills are +3
yeah, except NE has scored 63 points and the rest of the division has only scored 75pts combined. The KC game was an anomaly for NE. I think it’s the most points a BB team has ever given up.
Yes, but they have also given up 62 points, right? 😉
Plus, we’ve only played one game
NE lost to KC 41-14 in 2014.
Outstanding work Mike, Omar Kelly has nothing on you!

Not sure if I agree it was exaggerated, but Tannenbaum himself said he had to make changes in his approach, so I think that in and of itself speaks volumes.
I didn’t say he didn’t make some bad moves, I just think it’s been over exaggerated. In Miami, he, Grier and Gase all agreed to build mostly through the draft and with youth which they are doing.
It’s funny his main mistakes even though it looked promising at first involved the same player – trading up for Sanchez in the draft and then giving him an extension that wasn’t warranted.

NE lost to KC 41-14 in 2014.
Well then the 42 they gave up to them this year MIGHT be the most a BB team has ever given up still. (I remember hearing one of the talking heads saying it last week after the game.)
Not sure but the Chiefs have given them trouble in recent years. Even the playoff game they won was close.
Rock, I wasn’t trying to challenge your point. I should have made it more clear that it’s the Chiefs that give them trouble and have done it before.
I hope we put 62 points up on the Jets this Sunday!
I know its just a highlight reel but get excited!
Maybe the role we’ll have for him is more attacking and less reacting.
F*ck, that music is ANNOYING!
That kind of makes sense given his athleticism
I don’t know what happened to him in 2016 (he was very good in 2015 as a rookie) but I know that in 2015 if we drafted him (in the 2nd for instance) I would have been excited.
He was on a short list with guys like Kenricks, Perrymam & McKinley of guys I was hoping we would draft.

Good piece Mike E
Reviewing those names in the D (Wilkerson, Williams, Lee, Jenkins and Adams) it’s hard to believe how bad they are – but they are horrible defensively. The jests gave up 180 yards on the ground to the raiders and 190 yards to the Bills. Maybe they are just young or maybe they all aren’t as good as advertised as draft prospects but the bottom line is, they have not been good in the first 2 games this season
The Pork says that Ajayi will run for over 200 yards
Ajayi had a 100+ game against them last year.
he will have 200+ this week

It was a double team block. I’m sure there were better blocks he could have chosen to highlight but his pinky finger probably pressed the wrong button.
What is a “a week executed well blocked play.” Did it take a week to develop? or was it a weak executed play, if so how was it well blocked and “week” executed?
Maybe it was a “weak” executed block, that’s why it took 2 OL.

So TImmons doesn’t show up for the game, but he was with the team in LA for like five days. Anyone know if he was on the team plane back?
I heard he was found at the airport looking to board a plane to PA.
It is all just bizarre. The team put out a missing persons report….and now it is about him seeing a doc. Not like he got injured. Has smash the tray written all over it, without Richie involved.
Hyde5: New Dolphin Anthony to play Sunday; can Timmons return from this?
I have read three articles today that in the head line said Anthony would be playing this Sunday. NOWHERE in ANY of the three articles does it actually say or even elude to the fact that he will play. WTF is up with these reporters (or the editors who make up the headlines)?
I read Gase saying he could play Sunday. He passed his physical and the ankle not an issue.
Also Maualuga not practicing. Was he really that out of shape?

I don’t understand the reports of the dolphins filing a missing person report either. You have to be missing for a min of 48 hours before a report can be filed. (in Florida anyway)
I definitely saw a screen shot of the form they allegedly filed. It looked legit.
Apparently they were seriously worried about him.
I am only going by my own personal experience in Palm Beach County. We had someone go missing and tried to file a missing person report after about 12 hours of them being missing and the sheriffs office told us we had to wait another day to file the report. (as it turned out the person we were worried about was missing on purpose and did not want to be found but we tracked her down and found her before the time was up for us to file the report)
One pump, two pump…..AHHHHHHHEeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr……………for another 4:58
I don’t think they want to release Timmons. Wouldn’t they have done that already if his actions were totally not tolerated? The only way I see them releasing him is if he’s really not in the right mindset and something serious is going on with him.
The only reason would be to get back some of the $$$. I’m sure they can’t get most of it, but some is better than none.
And just maybe he redeems himself and turns it around.
But it’s clear the team will just plow ahead.
GO PHINS
Rock:
There is no actual requirement for a certain amount of time to file a missing persons report
HUH. That’s not what the Sheriffs office told us. PLUS it was a minor that was missing (17 year old)
So if our turn came up in the 2018 draft, and an all conference player was there who was a starter and a stud on a team that beat Ohio State, FSU, Oklahoma, LSU, etc.etc., would you draft him in the middle of the 5th as a value pick? This is not some wannabe from Northern Idaho. He has played before huge crowds on national TV every week.
What if he was the nationally #3 ranked HS LB?
I have no problem trading a 5th for Anthony. To me it’s not all about draft picks, draft picks, it’s about players. If he was a 5 year vet who still hasn’t put his game together I’d be leery but he’s only 25 in his 3rd season. There is still time for him to improve his game.
It’s funny not only does he resemble Julius Thomas a bit, but Thomas was also slow to develop breaking out in his 3rd season after not really playing much at all in his first two seasons. Let’s hope Anthony does the same. 🙂
What if the guy also had the #1 fastest time in the 40 of all LBs at the combine and the #1 best time of all LBs in the shuttle, jumped 3 ft in the vertical and lifted 23 reps? These are the measurables you want at LB. Is that good enuogh for a 5th rounder?
Nothing is ever good enough here to say it’s worth a draft pick.
Agreed. Let’s boycott the draft next year. Nothing good comes out of it.
Let’s just trade our picks for guys we already know can play in the NFL.
Wait. Isn’t that …???
Then what if there were a gypsy that predicted he would do this in the pros:
“As a rookie middle linebacker, he had 112 tackles, two forced fumbles, one recovered fumble, and one interception. He was named to the PFWA (Pro Football Writers of America) All-Rookie team.” Would you take that guy in the 5th?
What if your father-in-law coached the guy to that success, then got replaced and a terrible DC changed the player away from his natural position, but your wife’s dad still swears by the player? Would that help you draft him in the mid-5th?
What if he has a small $$ contract and is only 25 yrs old and just needs to get coached up and your DC is a well respected LB coach? And what if he’s 6’3 243 with almost no body fat?
I’m with Lou and Piggy and Dabo Swinney on this one. That is a steal.
What if he isn’t smart, has trouble diagnosing plays and just doesn’t get it yet? I like the trade, but you take the potential with the flaws.
He did great before they changed his position and they are well known for being terrible defensive coaches in New Orleans.
He wasn’t exactly great his rookie year. Word from Payton is he’d be back pedaling on running plays and at the LOS on pass plays far too often.
see rookie year stats above (He made the All Rookie Team) What more do you want?
When Brandon Cooks was stolen by bellicheat, everyone said what a great steal it was and what idiots the Saints are. This could be similar.
Difference is Cooks was great in Nola.
He averaged 68 yds per game and 7 TDs a yr with Drew Brees throwing. Meh.
The 24-48 hour wait to file a missing persons report is probably for an average person. This is a professional athlete who has spent a week in town getting ready for a game the next day. It’s not like anyone would think he’d just walk away like he did. Probably why they went ahead with the report instead of waiting.
Probably reported him as a 5150.
I am being told that you can file a report anytime you like, but most police departments don’t consider it an actionable item until a suitable amount of time has elapsed.
A lot depends on the missing person.
If it’s a 6 yr old who was not at the bus stop after school to get picked up, they are not going to wait two days.
All the cops did out there was make a call to the airport and hospitals and such and boom there he was. Not like they had the swat team out combing Compton.
Even SWAT doesn’t want to go to Compton
I’ve never been, is it nice there?

Tim, no round draft pick has any intrinsic value. Its an imaginary object until a selection has been made to start with, and the value of the pick isn’t realized until what it was used to get, shows its value. Furthermore its an ever changing value, and not even something that stays static so you can act as if you gained or lost anything.
So in order to know if you made the right pick at the right time and trading up or down might have been better, or getting this guy by giving up a pick was the right call, you would have to know these things. The entire career of the guy you got, the entire careers of the guys you didnt, the entire careers of people that you could have had if you used that pick to trade up, or the careers of the additional guys you picked up if you traded back, etc. Basically you have to be from far enough in the future to really know any of this, that it wouldn’t matter enough to you to come back and tell people if it was or wasn’t worth it lol.
My take on the Anthony pick is this. Its a 5th round selection, and that’s a guy you hope will start in a year or two, and providing improving backup contributions until then. Hell if you wound up with them as nothing more than a really strong backup, that also might be considered a win. Its true they might be seen to have talent and potential for something better or for it to happen sooner, but ultimately i start out with the above as the reality of a 5th. So the trade of a 5th to me means im hoping for the same from what i got in relation to the trade. Therefore if Anthony can be our backup, with potential to grow into a starter in a couple of years, or at least become a dependable backup and rotational player, he lives up to what we gave to get him. If he doesnt he will have been a wasted pick.
Its similar to people seeing one persons trash as another persons treasure and there are tons of businesses in place working those markets, so its not unreasonable to think that trades in the NFL can turn out similarly. People when they buy used items sometimes find out why those items were abandoned by the previous owner, and sometimes they find value the previous owner didnt. Maybe they had a different purpose in mind and it works out being used for that purpose than its original purpose.
I guess what im saying is, Anthony is neither good value nor wasted value at this point. He has to live up to a 5th round draft status now, and probably is on a shorter leash to reach that point than a normal 5th round selection due to being in the league already for 3+ years.
So…….just wait and see. Lol
Yeah and dont place expectations where none should be. We didnt get him from the saints for a 5th because he was dominant and shut down offenses, we got him like that because he failed there but still has potential to offer something in the long run.
What I’m saying is that the Dolphins valued Anthony the player for this year and hopefully more over their 2018 5th rd pick.
You see teams some years have a boat load of picks and rarely do they really hit on them all and make the impact that people get all excited about around draft time.
FYI, this is Anthony’s 3rd season, not 3+ years. He hasn’t even played yet in his 3rd season. We’ll see how he fits in with us and if he improves his game. I basically agree with you that Anthony is neither good value nor wasted value at this point.

If they had any suspicion that he could be at harm to himself or others, they wouldnt have to wait the 24-48. Thats more for people who are suspected of being missing but no one really knows for certain that something bad could have happened.
Like a woman with a recent violent domestic situation with a BF/Husband might not have to be missing for 24 hours before something is done about it, but if it was just something where she had complained to a friend that she was mad at her husband/boyfriend for something and then disappeared might have to.

————————————————–
But then she also predicted from that point forward he would be an absolute mess and even a team that had real issues at LB didn’t feel he was worth keeping, and despite the cheap contract, would rather ride with relatively unproven guys instead of him for the entire year, effectively giving up on a former 1st round pick.
You cant live off half the story, you have to taken in the whole story.
Naples i think you are showing exactly the problem with Anthony and why this cant be called a steal…. Everything you are listing was his potential, his reality is he hasn’t come close to reaching it. A lot of shit looks amazing on paper but it just doesn’t continue that way after the ink dries.
He made 112 tackles. in the NFL.
112 tackles?
We had LBs who MISSED 112 tackles.
How does Anthony’s rookie season count for less than his other season when he was forced to play out of position by a historically bad coaching staff? Not to mention the famous sophomore slump lots of guys fall into after they get an adult life with all its distractions to deal with as well.
“As a rookie middle linebacker, he had 112 tackles, two forced fumbles, one recovered fumble, and one interception. He was named to the PFWA (Pro Football Writers of America) All-Rookie team.”
It doesnt count for less, it just doesnt count for more than the other two years.
Also see above, im counting this year in the other two years, he failed to secure a starting position to me which to me is a fail for the year for him. If he isnt on the field, he cant really show he has bounced back from his sophmore slump, and there is no more way to say he was going to as he wasnt.
There’s only 2 years total.
This season has barely started!
and we have been trying to trade for him since training camp. They could not trade him if he could not pass a physical. Teams often hold back a guy they are shopping to trade, so there will be no injury problem to interfere.
I would put more stock into his problems if a) they were long term B) he was playing his best position when the bad times hit, and C) the team he was on was worth a shit defensively, but NO isn’t.
I don’t believe NO knows anything about developing or even utilizing defensive talent, and I think the record supports that harsh assessment.

———————————————
Right now they cant recoup anything on the contract. They can suspend him without pay for 4 games, and they wouldn’t therefore own him the money for that and in a sense recoup some of it. They may have grounds for breach of contract, depending on the contract language and the rules that the team made available to the players in the PS. and they might even be able to tack on some additional fines for missing meetings, etc but those cap out at about 20k per day and probably would only apply to Saturday and Sunday.
They will officially cut him when they know they can do it and get an acceptable amount of money back, or if they feel like its just better to cut the losses and keep a cancer from developing in the locker room. I think i saw that they said it might be possible to get back whats left of the guaranteed money as well, something like 4.5 mil, which would also keep him from counting against the cap next year. Whats done is done for this year though, outside of what they can get back in suspension fines.
From what I’ve read, they have to suspend him without pay for four games, at which point they can cut him, take back like $600K of his signing bonus and cancel his remaining guaranteed money.
Thats what i have read. They basically can only recoup the fines from this year, but can get back all the left over signing bonus and guarantees for remainder of his contract with us. If they cut him now though before that has been cleared they wouldnt get anything back. So the waiting on cutting him is because they dont want to lose the chance to recoup the money.
D — they suspended him…..that was going to happen either way even if they were going to cut him. And key thing is we still don’t know what happened. And gotta give credit to the Phins for that being so. Imagine how many people in Davie actually do know.
I know they were going to suspend him regardless, but im saying they will not cut him until its clear if they can recoup some of the guaranteed money. If they cut him now, they lose any chance to do that.
And I completely agree with that D…..obviously they will do what makes the most financial sense even if they know they are going to cut him right now, but that was really my point too.

———————————————
Tim, its 3+ years, he has had three chances to get and maintain a starting position. He had his rookie year, it was a solid one at least statistically. He thrived off his raw athletic traits, but was also showing flaws in his game, even then. As soon as teams figured out how to confuse him he got exposed and his next year was pretty awful. His third year, was a failure because despite no real studs on the team around him, he couldn’t keep himself in the starting lineup, he didn’t even perform well enough in the PS to justify giving him that chance, how is that not a 3rd year failure?
What he is to us is a wait and see, but this is silly a lot of things that are being posted about how amazing he is because of this stat or another stat or a combine speed or whatever. Proof is in the pudding, he has had 3 different years to establish himself as a player and he hasn’t been able to do that, so weight the good with the bad and then realize we cant have expectations of getting the Clemson Anthony, the Combine Anthony or maybe not even the rookie year Anthony.
Maybe i should have said 2+ but im looking at it from a different angle.
an obtuse angle or a right angle?
Straight angle.

Decent article on Cutler:
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2734086-jay-cutler-teammates-interviews-miami-dolphins?utm_source=cnn.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=editorial
Awesome article. Jay Cut is who he is, but here is why he makes the big bucks.
“Erik Davis: He did rip some gloves. You’d catch it and they’d just split. It’d hiss at you when it comes at you. It sounds like a snake hissing at you. That’s exactly how it sounds. It’s a Ssssssssss coming to you…and then it just sticks! He has a cannon, man. It’s effortless, too. It’s not like he’s one of those guys who’s winding up. It jumps off his arm with velocity.”
ok D … everything sucks, right? … everybody’s worse attribute is the one to concentrate on, right? … Nothing the team does makes sense, right? There were dozens of better options out there than the one the million dollar a year professionals chose to make. Why did they pick him then?
I did not say silly cheerleader words. I presented multiple types of facts.
Did you want them to get a slow, small guy from a small school with bad combine numbers off a practice squad we know nothing about?
We have been combing the rosters looking for LB help at least since Raekwon went down.
This is not a guy I am saying, “Hey if I were the GM, this is the best guy out there.”
This is the guy the GM decided was the best guy they could get. Not me.
I’m just trying to present the compelling reasons why they brought him in.
If they didn’t like him they wouldn’t have traded for him. It’s not like in the draft when you have to wait to see who falls to you or try to trade up for a guy. They gave a pick for a player and both teams agreed on the deal. Nobody forced them to make the trade. Maybe they feel like they can utilize his skill set in certain roles, like blitzing both the run and pass and not making him have to think too much. Just do this and don’t worry about anything else. LOL
D, Sean Payton said Anthony’s ankle injury hurt him getting the reps they wanted to see this year and that’s why he was inactive in the games. He couldn’t start because he couldn’t play and they were already kind of down on him anyway. I’m not doubting that. It’s no secret he was a disappointment for them so they moved on by trading him to us. If anyone lost value it was them using a 1st on him in 2015 and they no longer have that player.
Yes 2+ years would be the correct way to say it, no other way to really look at it. And the + is only 2 games into the 2017 season.
Let’s hope the great light goes off and he balls out for us. 🙂
So you dont think you can say 3? If we didn’t pick him up and he spends the year as a backup or benched, does that not count as a bad year?
Yes it would, but it hasn’t happened yet – still 15 games to go for us. You can’t have 3+ until he’s in his 4th season is all I’m saying.
I think we’re going to use multiple LBs this year anyway. Whether he starts or plays a role, as long as he plays solid when he’s in there that’s fine with me, our investment in him isn’t a lot at this time for a little over $1M and a 2018 5th rd pick. If he fails we’ll move on at some point, probably no earlier then cutdown time next year. That would be like our 5th rd pick not making the team, it happens. It’s never going to hurt us in any big way. If he plays really well, we got a steal and a young LB for the future.
He’s been leaning more towards a good pickup, not sure why you’re going off on him.
Naples if you are right then great, i just dont see how you can be as assured of it as you are. I really dont have a belief one way or the other, it just seems odd to me that any of us could get so excited about a guy who NO let go for a 5th, and that we would only give a 5th for.
Im not down on the trade, i just am not amped up about it. If he was as good as you are saying he is, with us being needy at LB, ie Saints having trade leverage because we are in a hole at the position and are seeking them out, then why wasnt the compensation higher? If the Saints believe he was this great talent, why werent they using him and why wasn’t he studding out.
No matter how you slice this, you cant make those parts make sense, especially using things that were true about him BEFORE he got to the NFL, or using the one year and ignoring the other, or ignoring the reports the Saints had made previously about him not being able to read defenses, and having slow reaction times, etc. Its like the combine, people get hung up on one particular stat like a 40 time or number of reps on a BP and they forget, oh wait this isnt about Underwear Olympic medals, this is about football and consistently doing things in a game that help a team win.
If the reports are true and he may play Sunday (im betting he might be active and might rotate in, but i doubt he starts) then we may get to see, but even if he falls flat on his face, does that really represent a bad trade, does him making the most of all his plays say success? I dont think so i think it just says he passed or failed his first test. When he is declared our starter, or is being called in to rotate with our starters consistently by our coaches, he will have earned us piling on this pickup as at least worth the cost.
Naples likes the pick and im not singing its priases, when that happenes sometimes people take it the wrong way. Not sweating it, but i can tell he doesnt at all get what im saying because he is only listening to the fact im not also singing along.
Naples i have said the 5th was a good value. I have said he has a lot of potential that he still hasnt reached yet. I have said plenty of times that Burke seems to be a good developer of LB (though you would have to search back a while to find where i said that part). Im not seeing where im shitting on your oreos man.
Im just being real about the fact that he has as many bad things being said, as many bad years as good, and as much of a chance to not be worth the pick up as being worth it. Thats why a 5th was negotiated, both sides felt it was adequate compensation, i also said that a few times too, so your latest reply seems like you havent been reading anything i have said and have only been focusing on how wrong i am not to agree with you.
Naples, let me take your last post and play a little game with it.
“ok D … everything sucks, right? … everybody’s worse attribute is the one to concentrate on, right? … Nothing the team does makes sense, right? There were dozens of better options out there than the one the million dollar a year professionals chose to make. Why did they pick him then?”
OK Naples, everything is great right? Everybody’s best attribute is the one to concentrate on, right? Everything the team does makes sense, right?
The other doesn’t have a nice opposite view point way to deal with it so ill just answer. “Because they get paid to pick up people, they had the connection with the Saints, the price was agreeable and they pulled the trigger…”
You are completely lumping me in with people who make irrational statements about the team never doing the right thing or i always know better what should have been done…so that again confirms you don’t read what i post. Maybe i make your eyes bleed, im not blaming you if you do gloss over, but trying to dick slap me without knowing what i have said really makes me understand you aren’t being rational about this, you aren’t discussing this, you are being a crazy Phins + Anthony fan and ranting against people who aren’t robotic-ally falling in line with it.
Ok so enough of the replying, if i didn’t cover it in the last three posts i think this is going to be one of the not worth my time things i swore to myself i wouldn’t get involved with.
D, what I see is you’re bein even keel about Anthony, he could go either way, and Naples likes the trade a lot and is looking at the positives because he thinks he can be a really good player. Nobody is right or wrong. I’m more even keel about it too, but I like Naples optimism and I hope he’s right. 🙂
No true Dolphin fan wants him to be wrong, and im pretty sure that covers everyone here.
Of course!

Ah i see, this again is a different perspective misunderstanding.
Im looking at it prior to trade, not as in i expect him to have a bad year for us so im dooming him to a bad 3rd year (with us). I was saying i counted this year as a failure, because the team he was with didn’t consider him a starter, so he had already failed his 3rd year test. He could redeem himself with us for sure, and i agree about the rotational aspect of his play time, hell id hope for his sake we didn’t just throw him to the wolves, i am hoping we ease him into it. There isnt a real reason we should feel the need to do that.
At this point Chase Allen is a better guy for us to lean on as a Timmons replacement, Anthony might get where he is splitting time more evenly or potentially even grabbing a few more snaps from the others guys, but that’s the wait and see part.
People have to rise to the occasion, especially with Gase, he isn’t going to look at a persons 40 time or draft round, or anything like that and just give them the start. He is going to give our team the best players on the field to win games, so nothing that happened 2-3 years ago will be more important than whats happening 2-3 minutes ago.
I know my perspective is a bit different and I did understood yours. I also agree with what you said here.
The same with Maualuga at least for now. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him released this season unless he really impresses to some degree. With Timmons suspended we have 6 available LBs so it depends on whether we think it’s worthy to carry 7 if everyone sticks.
Dont forget we had Reilly, who initially made the team on our PS, so he is not too far off from being a guy who can play at the level that Allen and Hull can. He might not be a stud player who is going to light it up but he gives yet another player where the drop off when we rotate, or if we had to put him in in place of an injury, wouldn’t be significant. We are in a much better place than a lot of people see us in.
I also think we might see Mauluga cut before we see him take a snap.
Agreed. I also like what I’ve seen from Allen. I know it’s mostly the PS and 13 snaps week 1 but he seems to show up and not in a bad way. He seems to always be around the ball and he gives us some size.

Chartreuse or Shar-Pei? (see how i snuck in an old reference?)
Allen might have been the reason we cut Hewitt. The FO and coaches may have thought Allen can do what Hewitt does and being that Hewitt wasn’t going to be available for most if not the entire season (shoulder), and also being a UFA or RFA in 2018, they simply cut ties with him.
I also like what I’ve seen out of Reilly. He’s got some length as a LB and plays similar to Allen that he seems active and not lost. The LB position is being built and churning as we speak along with some unfortunate stuff along the way. Hopefully we don’t have too many injuries and next year we have a chance to have a very different and more talented group. We’ll see how it plays out.
I like both Allen and Reilly and have said so repeatedly.
I liked Hewitt and Jelani Jenkins also.
I think a 5th Rounder for Anthony is a good deal… and I wonder if Jeff Ireland had a say in the trade down there with the Saints. As we all know, he can’t properly evaluate LBs.
5th Round value indicates to me that Anthony is a toss-up and his career could go either way… at least according to the Saints, having made the deal.
So if what we’re hearing is true and not just ‘coach-speak’, we’ve been trying to make this deal for a while (I’d assume pre-Raekwon’s season-ending injury in PSG1). If so, our intentions all along were to try to develop Anthony as a backup to Timmons/Raekwon/Kiko… a 5th Rounder is a steal here.
Thus, this truly has NOTHING to do with Timmons getting suspended… if what we’re hearing is true. And if we’re betting on Anthony’s upside, this trade has more to with 2018 (when we’ll likely cut Timmons unless he BALLS OUT this year), AND/OR the fact that Maualuga still isn’t ready to play for us right now as Timmons is suspended.
I also think that being Hewitt got injured and we parted ways with him (injury settlement), we needed a serious upgrade to our LB depth this year.
Being we traded for Anthony, we’ve made an investment in him. Best case scenario? He wins a starting job at some point this year and there’s no looking back in the near future… while putting ALL of our LBs (Maua *cough, cough* luga) on notice. Worst case scenario? We’ve got a decent backup LB with starting NFL experience…. WINNING(!!!), for a mere 5th.
Sorry that I had to leave the discussion for a bit. Unavoidable.
Did not mean that to imply that I have hurt feelings.
With the large ;number of douchebags on this site, I wouldn’t come here if i could get hurt feelings.
So i am not all jacked up about Stephone Anthony per se, I am not predicting he will be all pro, and i am not personally invested in the player as if i had selected him before the GM signed him.
So just leave all that out as i never said or implied any of that.

Saints players react to team trading Stephone Anthony to Dolphins
http://www.nola.com/saints/index.ssf/2017/09/saints_react_stephone_anthony.html
I am a fact-based guy. That’s just me. If you were to collate all my posts (not a valuable use of your time), you would find that I am the guy who goes for the facts. I do the research.
I am not the twitter guy, the funny guy, the cool guy, not even the salary cap guy. I’m the facts guy.
Naples — whatever kinda of guy you are you are one of our favorite kinds here. Keep hoping you makes it across the alley for a Fest…..still a chance for this year.
thanks…i really want to be there, it seems like so much fun, but things are complicated.
awesome bar graph … pff gave Suh the game ball from our first game.
I noticed… thanks to YOU running the gamut like you do! You are appreciated, Naples.
Every time anything happens, whether it is about the Dolphins or in my real life, I make spreadsheets, I consult the record books, the history books, the interviews, etc. etc.
I’m rather boring, but that’s just the way i am. I’m a nerd by nature.
I’m also an eternal optimist. I believe in the power of inspirational leadership to accomplish great things and to be able to stimulate other people to accomplish great things.
I’m a humanist, again, fact-based, not a spiritualist.
I’m optimistic about Adam Gase as HC.
I believe he can get the best out of guys.
I must have missed something from earlier, but it seems to me that you’re being really hard on yourself. I enjoy reading your posts, Brother. You aren’t boring and I appreciate what you bring to the table.
Thanks MF. i’m ok.
Go Dolphins.
You missed Naples doing a 180, then he tells us he’s a facts guy. That may be true, but he sure seemed to have left out a lot of negative facts on Anthony😀 just bustin your bawls a little bit Naples.
So D, and this will end the discussion for my part I promise, I did not say silly cheerleader words. I presented multiple types of facts. The things I mentioned actually happened.
Bottom line is, we needed a linebacker.
Did you want them to get a slow, small fat guy from a small school with bad combine numbers off a practice squad we know nothing about? I’m glad that’s not the guy we got.
Even with all that, the reason I submitted the facts for the blog people to see is so that everyone could try to understand why we traded for that particular LB.
That’s really all there is to it.
Current official cap space after trading for Anthony: $610,964… and a bag of Chips Ahoy. We can no longer afford ANY injuries to starters.
To be clear here, I’m just stating a fact; I don’t regret trading for Anthony whatsoever. But somebody in Miami needs to call an exterminator for that dreaded injury bug so that we don’t incur anymore casualties.
yikes … what happens if we need a guy and have no cap space? Does this restrict us to bringing a guy up from the PS? Can we even afford that? What do they automatically get paid?
I SURE GET all this discussion about the LB positions. It is VERY important to plug these unexpected holes, and to do so as prudently as possible. But, damn it, it’s WEDNESDAY NIGHT OF JETS WEEK!!! Where are all the “J-E-T-S SUCK,SUCK,SUCK” T-SHIRTS??” WHERE ARE THE “F*CK THE JETS!’ bumper stickers??? Where are the cartoons of Danny Boy throwing an oversized football into a little toy Jet??? And then, there’s my all-time favorite banner, a banner of several bedsheets tied together hanging down from the upper deck in the east end zone of the historic Orange Bowl just for the AFC Championship Game between the Jets and the Dolphins. It read (IN HUGE LETTERS) “Do the Jets Stink?? –It takes Gastineau!!” When I go back and replay that muddy game in my mind, a big smile comes on my face. A.J. Duhe was Richard Todd’s favorite receiver, nabbing THREE interceptions, including a humongous pick midway through the fourth quarter which extended Miami’s precarious 7-0 lead to 14-0! THE DOLPHINS WERE GOING TO SUPER BOWL 17, and I would be there!! AT THAT MOMENT, all the past losses to the Jets were just a distant memory. ALL THE PAIN was GONE!! Me and “My Boyz” were heading to a bar in Ft. Lauderdale to celebrate!!!!! (And the bar owner was a JETS fan!!)
—Perhaps the moderation of this once BLOOD RIVALRY is for the best. No more bottles thrown. No more fights (for the most part). No more TOTALLY INSANE BEHAVIOR before, during and after the game!! No more dodging vast pools of fresh barf in the parking lot!!

GOD HELP ME, I LOVED EVERY MOMENT OF IT!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, Anthony might not be not very bright.
“Below average take-on skills. Plays with poor leverage when taking on blocks. Needs to improve hand usage and utilize better arm extension to keep blockers off him. Has tendency to side-step blocks and open run lanes. Can be mismatched by running backs down the field in passing game. Sluggish dropping into zone coverage and will drift too deep. Slow to process and recover against play-action. There are times he gets downhill without diagnosing first, creating bad angles to the ball against outside runs.”
I just realized something and it’s not necessarily a referendum on him: Matt Burke has never coached a LB to the Pro-Bowl in his 8 years as a former LB coach. He’s been a part of Defenses that produced Pro-Bowlers (and at the same time, in some cases) on the D-Line and Secondary… but never once one of his coached LBs.
In all fairness, Burke has been a part of some really poor Defensive teams. However, I can’t call him a “LB whisperer” in the same sense as Gase seems to be a “QB whisperer”. With any kind of luck, Burke and Charlie Bullen can make our LB corps elite.
And JMO, I feel as though Kiko Alonso DESERVED to make the Pro-Bowl last year. And he should have been up for Comeback Player of the Year, along with MR. Wake.
GO BURKE!!!
GO PHINS!!!
HELL YEAH!!!

GREAT question (promotion to the 53 from the PS), which I should already know… but I’m not sure at the moment.
My best guesses:
A) No raise
B) League minimal
If I understand correctly, there are some people on PSs across the league that make considerably more than their PS contemporaries. Dammit, I should KNOW the answer to this question!
They cut someone or re-work someone’s contract.
“I am not the twitter guy, the funny guy, the cool guy, not even the salary cap guy. I’m the facts guy.”
Wait…I need to know which kind I am. Although you may be a category or two short.
I will ask around but from what I hear you are considered a “jerk off”
Don’t worry though, you are considered one of the best jerk offs
😀
The cap only accounts for your top 50 players I think. Churning the bottom of the roster doesn’t effect the cap.
Top 50 by contract amounts
YES! You have the answer right there, Son… good call. That addresses what we’re concerned about.
But I STILL would like to know (just for the fun of it) if a PS player gets a raise for promotion to the 53.

Those are two ways to do it, agreed, and good call. But it doesn’t address the absolute nature of the question: does a PS player get a pay raise for promotion to the 53?
Yes they do get a raise to first year minimum.
Probably gets the league minimum prorated for games played
Good calls by you both, Phelon and Son. Props.
