Week 8 – Game 7 – Dolphins @ Ravens

Baltimore-Ravens-vs-Miami-Dolphins-NFL-Matchup-jpg_734882_ver1.0_1280_720

The Dolphins will have a short time to celebrate this week after an exciting come from behind victory at Hard Rock stadium in Miami.  QB Matt Moore led the comeback against the Jets down 28-14 after Jay Cutler was sacked and was later to be found to have multiple cracked ribs.  The Dolphins prevailed with Moore at the helm, winning the game 31-28 in the final minute of the game.  Fest games don’t get much better than that, although I have to admit, last year’s Buffalo comeback win 28-24 was pretty damn close!

NFL: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins

So Cutler is out, and now all of you who can’t stand Cutler get your wish.  I caution you though, be careful what you wish for!  No slight to Moore, but Jay Cutler was actually playing well in this game.  Yeah, detractors will point out the pass to Stills (Which was a completion BTW), or the tipped pass for an INT (It happens to every QB), or that we were down 28-14.  I don’t know any more than any of you who want Moore over Cutler, but I got a guy on my side who counts a lot more than you knuckleheads, and that’s HC Adam Gase.

I’ll say this, Moore looked very confident, very comfortable, and moved the team well.  There was a definite difference in the tempo, Moore ran things smoothly, as if he’s been here for years, well, because he has.  I liked what I saw, but I also remember the Matt Moore that makes a great throw one play, and the next tries to force one in there and it’s going the other way.  Matt Moore is a capable NFL QB, but is he sustainable?  I’m not sure if we’ll find that out, because I think he may only get a few games (3-4) before Cutler is healthy enough to play again, and at that point, I do hope it’s a difficult decision for Adam Gase to make, because that would mean Moore has been playing great.  If Moore struggles, there will be no question at all that Cutler will be the QB when healthy.

DolphinsJets_57

How about that D-E-F-E-N-S-E ?  Yeah, they struggled a bit against the Jets, but came up big at the end of the game, shutting down the Jets on their last 3 possessions, coming up with the HUGE Bobby McCain INT on the last of the 3 to enable the Dolphins to kick the game winning field goal.  Cam Wake now has 6 sacks in 6 games, which puts him on pace for 16 for the season, which would be a career high for Wake at age 35.  Isn’t that somethin’?  The defense has been getting contributions from a lot of players, the D-line, and I mean more than just Suh, including Phillips, Godchaux, Hayes, Taylor, Harris, Fede, and of course, the LB’s, Alonso, Timmons and even Maualuga.  Reshad Jones is back, and is exactly what we need back there in the secondary.  I can’t wait to see the tandem of Jones and McDonald in Week 9.  Nate Allen hasn’t been awful, but he’s a complete non-factor.  The two young CB’s have had their ups and downs, tank had a rough outing last week, but he’s going to have those.  I’m very pleased with the tandem of Tankersley and Howard.  Next year, hopefully Lippett is back too, and Bobby McCain made a huge play and has been playing better, so things are looking up.

The Ravens have been decimated by injuries, hit even harder than our own Dolphins team, which has seen it’s share for sure.  Joe Flacco has struggled this season, with only 5 TD’s and 8 INT’s.  Son’s boy Breshad Perriman and Mike Wallace are the wideouts, Ben Watson is the TE, and the ravens feature a RB by committee approach, with a combo of Javorius Allen, Alex Collins and Terrance West.  Allen is their leading receiver with 31 receptions, and also has the most carries with 82 for 301 yards and 1 TD.  Terrell Suggs still leads the defense, in his hybrid role of LB and pass rushing DE.  The Ravens are allowing 21.1 PPG while our Dolphins defense 18,7 PPG.  On offense, the Ravens are averaging 18.6 while the Dolphins a paltry 15.3.

It was another fantastic FEST, and I hope that more of you guys and girls can attend the next one.  It’s a great time to be had, and I actually miss all of you who partied with us last week.  If you can find a way to make it, I can assure you won’t regret it!  Dilly Dilly!

The Ravens are coming off a tough loss to the Vikings, 26-14, but those pesky Ravens seem to always give us a tough time.  Last season, the Ravens spanked us 38-6. In 2015, we eeked out a 15-13 win.  In 2010, 2013 and 2014, The Ravens beat us and almost all of those games severely hurt our playoff chances.  No other way to put it, but I freaking HATE the Ravens!  Besides our division rivals, there is no other NFL team I hate more, so I hope Matt Moore brings his “A” game, and the defense does as well!

A perfect opportunity to go 5-2 and we are blowing it. There is such a big difference between 5-2 and 4-3. It’s the difference between having some cushion to slip up down the stretch and having to win nearly every game.

Woke up at 5:30am to watch a recording of this before work. My days of staying up for this team are done. At least with a recording, watching the car crash at x30 is less traumatic.

I have never seen a team so up and down. The discipline remains awful. The O line play is just abysmal for the most part. Our screen plays are pee-wee standard. Our QB has no time to throw. Gase is using about a 1/4 of the play book and opposing Ds know exactly what is coming. Our D plays lights out or walk out. It’s not only hard to figure out what’s wrong (mainly cos it’s something different every week) but also how to fix it as something else goes wrong before anything can be fixed.

Boulder was spot on – it was like the Saints game last night, but at least I didn’t pay to watch the Ravens humiliate us (yet again). Yuk.

We have three first rounders on the OL and it’s still shit. Pounced needs to go next season and spend that money on someone else. He clearly isn’t making that big of a difference on the OL, so the salary isn’t worth it IMO. We couldn’t do much worse with someone else in there. Draft a LT in the 1st and kick Tunsil back inside.

And on a last more before I leave for work- last night’s game was nothing short of deplorable.

  50. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Looks like I put more effort into writing this article than the team did preparing for the game last night. I hate the Ravens so much, so we just bend over and get ass-raped by them. I hate Thursday Night Football even more now.

I think that was the the worst dolphin game I’ve ever seen

  52. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The GOOD NEWS – It only counts as ONE loss, although I’m inclined to think it should be at least 2, maybe 3.

  53. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Gase ought to be applying ass cream to the team now, but he better start kicking their ass tomorrow, and let them know last night was U-N-A-C-C-E-P-T-A-B-L-E ! He should also apologize for not having them prepared.

  54. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

For all of you Matt Moore fans, he DID throw 2 TD’s last night. They were to the other team, but at least it looked like he cared, and he wasn’t throwing off his back foot. lol

Field position was horrible, we need a new punter, he can’t punt worth a shit!

  56. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

  57. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i looked up the fumble in the endzone i remember stabler did that and won a playoff game. they changed that rule to where you cant advance a fumble like that because of what stabler did, come to find out that rule only applies in each half within the 2 minute warning

  58. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

kenny stills pulled up short on that pass in the end-zone because he knew the safety was coming up and wanted to avoid the hit at the expense of the team! you can’t win with pussys!

  59. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

i seen hayes get wrapped up by their rt as their rb went around the corner for a big gain, it was so obvious and nothing was called!

  60. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Bri – DT’s like Brandon Williams always give Pouncey trouble. He’s a finesse blocker, but you put a 340LB guy in front of him, he’s useless. He can’t move guys like that, and he also can’t get downfield to block either.

  61. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

as for flaccid flacco, he was trying to pick up the first down and alonso was trying to stop it, flacco new he wouldn’t get there and slid way late, alonso had no time to bail and he shouldnt be fined for that hit.

  62. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

    Woof..

  63. We can’t play in this league without QB and OL.
These losses will keep us in the midst of the Josh Allen lottery for the 2018 draft.
this team has no blocking and no leadership from the QB position.
This Reminds me of 2007 when we had several QB, none worth starting.

Not sure if you want to call it stupid or brave but Ryan Mallet has some huge cahones. What QB goes after Suh?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If I remember correctly, Mallett is dumb as fuck, so . . .

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      He went after Suh
Then Suh did a Vader hold on him
And he threw up his hands pleading for the refs to save him – so don’t give him too much credit
He basically picked a fight and then ran under a desk

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Oh I lean towards the stupid part for sure, but he still did it. Reminded me of how my little dogs like to bark at big dogs when both are on the leads yet never do in an off-leash park …..but Mallett wasn’t smart enough to realize that given the game situation the leash was off.

  68. Phindog's avatar Phindog says:

The shit I’m getting at the office today.. Uuuhhhhggg.

  69. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

My new theory is to blame the zone blocking scheme

They basically dumbed down the offense after they lost Tannehill
    So it’s completely predictable
But the blocking scheme is still very complicated

So the defense has a pretty good idea about what we are going to run
And our OL has no idea of who to block
And after the snap the defense is behind the LOS

What do you think of my new theory of what is wrong?

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

My theory is that the O-line needs to start snorting coke like it’s former OL coach. It couldn’t hurt

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

LOL. it really couldn’t. I don’t remember the last time the phins got shut out in 2 games in one season. Let alone in the 1st 7 games of a season. It was actually almost 3 shut outs.
I’m glad we have an offensive guru as HC.

  70. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Boulder – Isn’t that the strange part? We have an offensive minded coach, who was a successful OC, and now it’s the defense that is improving, while the offense languishes. Why? It’s baffling

  71. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

After last night Roger Goodell and Troy Vincent have entered our picture, and more specifically that of Suh (two times), Alonso (hit on Flacco) and Hayes (eye poke).

I don’t think Suh or Kiko should be suspended
      But Hayes orobably should be

If Kiko is suspended we might get to see Anthony on the field….weeeeee

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

This team is going nowhere, so it really doesn’t matter if any or all of them get suspended. They probably will relish the week off.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Well look Boulder it’s just one game

Albeit the performance was basically vomit posing as football – it’s not quite that the team is going nowhere IMO

They just happen to look as bad as I’ve ever seen…lol

That said – I don’t really cAre if they suspend or bench the entire team. What’s wrong with the team is not just about the personell and probably has little to do with the personell

    ————-
EXACTLY! I’ve been saying this for YEARS about Pouncey… he’s not a MAULER. He’s A+ against DTs, but he’s a liability against NGs and NTs.

Gotta take the good with the bad. We’re going to win a lot of games with our ZBS, but we’re going to lose some against the ‘Heavy D’s’ of the league… especially with no passing game like last night.

In retrospect, it’s pretty amazing we blew out the Stealers* last year in the regular season. The Stealers* Defense is very close in model to the Ravens Defense (or vice-versa) and always has been.

  73. D's avatar D says:

I had a big long thing typed up, but ill just simplify to this. Im disappointed in that showing, not just the fact we lost but just that we looked inept. Gase IMO holds a lot of the blame for this. I know the OL did very poorly, i know the defense played too emotionally and llet their emotions take the game from bad to worse, but Gase did nothing to get his players straightened our, he did nothing to alter his game plane or adjust it, he literally just sat there on the sideline with a disgusted look on his face instead of making any attempt to swing it back around.

Moore was predictably bad, i definitely thought he could string in at least one game or maybe even two before this happened, but i knew this game was coming, because that’s his pattern. I hate to say i told you so but i think its excatly the caution i was throwing out there about getting all in with Moore, instead of being rational about Moore as out QB.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Gase tried to change things up but that failed as well

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

D – I said the same in my article about Moore, even going so far as saying he’ll throw on good pass, and then the next is going the other way for 6. Didn’t realize he’d do it TWICE. He’s just not a consistent, sustainable guy at QB.As far as Gase is concerned, I couldn’t be more disappointed. He did nothing to help the team yesterday

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

They blitzed the shit out of Moore in the first half. It worked specially because our run game was going nowhere.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

They actually called a screen pass that would have went for a TD but Moore (Romo specifically pointed it out) didn’t make the necessary throw

That’s the right call when a team blitzes like that

But you gotta make that throw

If you can’t pull off a screen teams are going to keep coming at you like that

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Damien Williams fell down on that screen-pass that would have been a TD.

  74. drg's avatar drg says:

Can anyone explain to me why Gase has to simplify the offense to the point of total predictability? We have two QBs with multiple years in his offense. WRs with a ton of experience. Our RBs should be more than capable in the blocking assignments. OL? That makes no sense to me.

Our run and pass blocking is about as bad as I can remember. That was a total ass kicking last night. Hopefully it was mostly due to fatigue and the Thursday night game. If the team bounces back against Oakland I’ll feel much better.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yeah the offense seems to simple and really predictable
If you are going to do that you have to excite the fundamentals much better

The worse part about the simplified offense is that they still struggle to execute it or even get the snap off before the last couple of seconds

  75. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It also seems like none of the RBs know how to pick up the blitz

Really we suck at some very fundamental things that can fix a miserable game like

    – RB pick up the blitz
    – run an effective screen
    – run and connect a simple slant once in a while

    • drg's avatar drg says:

Pick up a stunt for once, please. Our OL communication is awful. Tons of instances where guys are blocking air or triple teaming one man.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t get what they struggle so much at that

It probably doesn’t help the the OL coach was high on cocaine in meeting just a few weeks ago.

  76. drg's avatar drg says:

    Pig,

Maybe I’m wrong, but I thought the screen pass to Williams was perfect. Looked like Williams just fell down.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      See above.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

      You guys could be right
      But Romo said otherwise
At that point of the game I’m not watching with a critical eye
My face is buried in my trotters in frustration so I will take your word for it

Generally I’m not happy about Williams play and I don’t know why we don’t use drake more

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

yup he fell down. That was when I knew it wasn’t our night.

  77. drg's avatar drg says:

    D,

It could have been Elway or Marino at QB last night and wouldn’t have mattered. Run blocking was a joke and Baltimore was able to get pressure immediately on almost every play.

  78. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

The phins should have just stayed home and forfeited the game. They didn’t show up last night like a team that wanted to win. From coaches to the players it was obvious they weren’t ready to play this game.

  79. D's avatar D says:

Kiko shouldnt be suspended. He didnt do that flagrantly, though he didnt try to pull up, when i do believe he could have. I think he will get a fine, but i dont think there will be a suspension. I think his fine will be moderate, because its a first offense, even though it was a player safety incident.

Suh was about to fuck that OG up for attacking Kiko, he certainly will get fined, and i think he might receive a next game warning that if that occurs again he will face suspension. Blood boils on the field, anyone who has even been involved in football knows this, but they also want the players to control themselves and i think Suh got a little out of control. If they do suspend Suh, or penalize him, Mallett should also be getting one. He instigated it, he shoved Suh to bring that on himself, so maybe it boils down to a lesson learned…..for Malett, don’t poke the bear. Suh’s fine probably also moderate, he doesnt have any recent (this year) offenses, and because they cant show that he was intentionally going for the dude’s throat, he was pushing him back and grabbing him by the throat like a lot of media people are trying to paint it like. His past might come back to haunt him though, so i guess we have to wait and see what they do to him.

Hayes i dont know if they got enough on it to make it flagrant that he was intending to hurt him. There was a lo of swinging and pushing before that went down, he did poke him in they eye, but he may have just been poking his finger in his face to get at him and then when dude reacted to it, it caused him to get poked in the eye. I know people who to try to degrade the person they are arguing with will result to poking them in the face by pushing their finger into bridge of their nose. I don’t think the eye poking was intentional, but the degradation was. Id bet money with the way that Hayes generally keeps control, some shit happened before that but the cameras weren’t on it the whole time so i cant confirm or deny it. He doesnt have a history of it, but it really boils down to do they believe he ws intentionally eye gouging, and personally i dont think they can prove that.

All of this is the out of control with their emotions that i was referring to that took the bad performance to a completely disgusting one. We will see how it all shakes out, but i expect to see fines for all of those guys, but unlikely suspensions for any of them.

Gase didnt so much of anythign to swap stuff up, and he did that super simplified, highly predictable offense BS he has done at least in the first half of every game. He really has to open things up and stop being afraid the players are too stupid to handle it. If he really has so little confidence in those guys, get new people for fucks sake, stop making us look like we have a pee wee league play designer back there.

  81. D's avatar D says:

DRG i disagree, i dont think Marino or Elway would have handled that the same way as Moore, they would have burned the Ravens defense for the stupid shit that we were allowing them to do. They would have spotted it pre-read, they would have audibled to a different play, and they would have burned the shit out of them. Those guys would have picked apart a defense that sold out on blitzing, and then when they were playing honest, the rest of the offense would have opened up.

Moore isnt giving us that kind of guy, and Cutler wasn’t prior to the last maybe 4 quarters he was back there, but he definitely has a lot more potential to make a defense pay for doing shit like that than Moore does. He’s a lot closer to Marino or Elway than Moore is, even though he is still light years off what those guys were as well.

    • D's avatar D says:

Go watch some old footage of Marino, he got a lot of pressure early on too, id say until they got Webb and Sims at LT/LG, he was being hit or pressured most plays. The QB helps elvate the OL play, as much as the OL does in return. They feed off each other. Last night we had bad OL play, dude to injuries, etc, and Moore needed to balance it out by getting rid of the ball quicker, audibling out of defensive formations that were conducive for the play call, and he wasn’t able to do any of that. Gase also didnt help him by putting him in bad positions with bad play calling.

I’m with you on this, although I’m not sure how much better Cutty would do. He did seem to be improving though the last couple of games, you can see it happening.

  82. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

In the STRANGE but TRUE category…

We only gave up 295 total yards last night (121 passing, 174 rushing). That marks the 3rd time this season our Defense has kept an opposing Offense under 300 total yards, and that’s pretty outstanding.

Yet, our Defense STILL managed to give up 26 points last night (plus 14 points on Moore’s 2 pick-6s) in the loss.

Last week against the stej, we only gave up 272 total yards (180 passing, 92 rushing). Yet, our Defense STILL managed to give up 28 points to the stej in the win.

Peeps, we used to be a ‘bend, but don’t break’ Defense for YEARS. We’d bleed yardage, but we always killed in the redzone when it counted. Seems we’re the polar OPPOSITE this year under Burke.

    • D's avatar D says:

Its because they were always starting on our side of the field. They never had to go 80-100 yards to get a TD, they were going maybe 50, not hard to keep the yardage low yet get lots of points when they need less than 50 to get 7 point. A big part of that was how poorly out ST unit played another chunk of that was the yards we gave them from penaalties.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great point M13. Before last night we were 6th in points per game. Today we are 14th. Before the game we were 10th in yard per game….and today still are.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thank you, sir! I appreciate that. It’s not just our Offense that’s playing poorly right now… it’s the team as a whole.

Glad I recorded it. Just like UK said, it’s easier in fast forward to take.

Thought the D played well. They were getting held and mauled on almost every play with no flags. It is what it is. Then they lost it….. can’t blame them.

This offense is abysmal. You can see better at your local high schools. It is just beyond words right now.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Always easy to say glad recorded after the fact when a game like this one comes up. Was on real time till at half watched something else….and was really happy later to fast forward through the rest of the game. 🙂

  86. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

For the life of me, I don’t understand how we couldn’t stop the Ravens rushing attack last night. We VERY SPECIFICALLY made it priority #1 to KILL the run this year, and we’ve done just that up until last night… it’s kept us in games ALL YEAR until last night. Color me BAFFLED.

If I’m Matt Burke right now, I’ve already pulled all my hair out… including my beard.

There are rumors floating around out there that the Lions won’t be able to afford re-signing Ziggy next year and that he could be traded to the Patsies* before the deadline… NOT KIDDING.

on the bright side the ‘annual’ butt-kicking at the hands of Ravens is over (a game most of us before the season counted as a loss anyway).

What’s frightening is that on a GOOD day our offense is basically 16-20 points of production. That doesn’t leave much margin of error for our defense.

NFL Network execs are saying: “see! THAT’s why we don’t schedule the Dolphins for nationally televised games”.

I was really high on him as well. In fact, i had delusions that when they pulled the trade up it was for Ansah, i should have known with that FO it would have been someone else. To Ireland’s credit, Jordan was highly touted, but i thought Ansah was very clearly an elite player after i watched him at Senior Bowl, and freaking Ireland was there too so im not sure how he missed that.

if we had lost 24-23 or 40-0 it still counts as 0-1 in the loss column, the fact that we got blown out has to demoralize this team and coaches and maybe that’s a good thing moving forward.
