Week 8 – Game 7 – Dolphins @ Ravens

Baltimore-Ravens-vs-Miami-Dolphins-NFL-Matchup-jpg_734882_ver1.0_1280_720

The Dolphins will have a short time to celebrate this week after an exciting come from behind victory at Hard Rock stadium in Miami.  QB Matt Moore led the comeback against the Jets down 28-14 after Jay Cutler was sacked and was later to be found to have multiple cracked ribs.  The Dolphins prevailed with Moore at the helm, winning the game 31-28 in the final minute of the game.  Fest games don’t get much better than that, although I have to admit, last year’s Buffalo comeback win 28-24 was pretty damn close!

NFL: New York Jets at Miami Dolphins

So Cutler is out, and now all of you who can’t stand Cutler get your wish.  I caution you though, be careful what you wish for!  No slight to Moore, but Jay Cutler was actually playing well in this game.  Yeah, detractors will point out the pass to Stills (Which was a completion BTW), or the tipped pass for an INT (It happens to every QB), or that we were down 28-14.  I don’t know any more than any of you who want Moore over Cutler, but I got a guy on my side who counts a lot more than you knuckleheads, and that’s HC Adam Gase.

I’ll say this, Moore looked very confident, very comfortable, and moved the team well.  There was a definite difference in the tempo, Moore ran things smoothly, as if he’s been here for years, well, because he has.  I liked what I saw, but I also remember the Matt Moore that makes a great throw one play, and the next tries to force one in there and it’s going the other way.  Matt Moore is a capable NFL QB, but is he sustainable?  I’m not sure if we’ll find that out, because I think he may only get a few games (3-4) before Cutler is healthy enough to play again, and at that point, I do hope it’s a difficult decision for Adam Gase to make, because that would mean Moore has been playing great.  If Moore struggles, there will be no question at all that Cutler will be the QB when healthy.

DolphinsJets_57

How about that D-E-F-E-N-S-E ?  Yeah, they struggled a bit against the Jets, but came up big at the end of the game, shutting down the Jets on their last 3 possessions, coming up with the HUGE Bobby McCain INT on the last of the 3 to enable the Dolphins to kick the game winning field goal.  Cam Wake now has 6 sacks in 6 games, which puts him on pace for 16 for the season, which would be a career high for Wake at age 35.  Isn’t that somethin’?  The defense has been getting contributions from a lot of players, the D-line, and I mean more than just Suh, including Phillips, Godchaux, Hayes, Taylor, Harris, Fede, and of course, the LB’s, Alonso, Timmons and even Maualuga.  Reshad Jones is back, and is exactly what we need back there in the secondary.  I can’t wait to see the tandem of Jones and McDonald in Week 9.  Nate Allen hasn’t been awful, but he’s a complete non-factor.  The two young CB’s have had their ups and downs, tank had a rough outing last week, but he’s going to have those.  I’m very pleased with the tandem of Tankersley and Howard.  Next year, hopefully Lippett is back too, and Bobby McCain made a huge play and has been playing better, so things are looking up.

The Ravens have been decimated by injuries, hit even harder than our own Dolphins team, which has seen it’s share for sure.  Joe Flacco has struggled this season, with only 5 TD’s and 8 INT’s.  Son’s boy Breshad Perriman and Mike Wallace are the wideouts, Ben Watson is the TE, and the ravens feature a RB by committee approach, with a combo of Javorius Allen, Alex Collins and Terrance West.  Allen is their leading receiver with 31 receptions, and also has the most carries with 82 for 301 yards and 1 TD.  Terrell Suggs still leads the defense, in his hybrid role of LB and pass rushing DE.  The Ravens are allowing 21.1 PPG while our Dolphins defense 18,7 PPG.  On offense, the Ravens are averaging 18.6 while the Dolphins a paltry 15.3.

It was another fantastic FEST, and I hope that more of you guys and girls can attend the next one.  It’s a great time to be had, and I actually miss all of you who partied with us last week.  If you can find a way to make it, I can assure you won’t regret it!  Dilly Dilly!

The Ravens are coming off a tough loss to the Vikings, 26-14, but those pesky Ravens seem to always give us a tough time.  Last season, the Ravens spanked us 38-6. In 2015, we eeked out a 15-13 win.  In 2010, 2013 and 2014, The Ravens beat us and almost all of those games severely hurt our playoff chances.  No other way to put it, but I freaking HATE the Ravens!  Besides our division rivals, there is no other NFL team I hate more, so I hope Matt Moore brings his “A” game, and the defense does as well!

  1. We suck, no one questioning that. We can’t change things til next year.
    in the 2018 draft,
We need to go for Josh Allen or equivalent talent at QB , and some OL that can block once in awhile.

  2. We see the rookie Watson get 19 TD,s in 7 games, and know that the talent of a QB can make, or in our case, break a team.
Texans knew what they needed, who Watson was , and went for it.
Eagles did the same, traded up for their franchise QB.

Tannehill and Cutler are taking up a huge chunk of our cap, and we aren’t getting much from them. Teams that don’t have a franchise QB , can learn from the teams that have one.

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

I highly doubt we draft a QB in the first few rounds next year. Tanny is the QB next year unless he gets injured again or something.

      • That’s certainly Possible, but I sure hope not. This teams going nowhere until we get a franchise QB.
There are some good QB available in next years draft, there is no valid reason to not draft one.

  3. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

We have enough talent on the oline to be good. Specially when larson comes back. The issue is coaching and blocking scheme IMO. IF anything changes next year is we get a really good oline coach and possibly change our blocking scheme.

    Our O-Line is horrible.

  5. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

surprised NBC didn’t flex us out of next sunday night. I guess they could still do it.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You got me to check out…..unless there are new rules in play “The announcement will come no later than 12 days prior to the game.” So seems Sunday night it will be, even if NBC might be wishing the Ravens blow out had happened the week before.

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

cool thanks. So the reason is that both the raiders and the phins got blown out inside the 12 days mark. LOL.

when the season started it appeared to be such an exciting game….

  6. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I can see us drafting a QB early but I do think the plan is Tannehill for now
I suspect Tanny will be the starter in ’18

Really they need to fix the OL as a priority
the personel seems adequate but they aren’t doing it – so maybe ’18 is the OL Draft some have been waiting for

We have to see the season play out
but I am leaning towards heavy OL this draft/offseason, keeping most of our players and getting a heathy Tanny in 2018

I don’t think we need to create cap room by trading vets. I don’t think we need to let players who produced for us (like Landry) go to avoid cap hell

the one vet I can see us parting ways with is Pouncey and that just leads me to believe we will be more committed to new talent on the OL in ’18

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

we need better oline coaching. The pats put 5 nobodies on the line and can both run and protect grandpa brady. Coaching and scheme has a lot to do with it.

  7. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Laremy Tunsil: consensus safest player in the ’16 Draft before ‘Bong-Gate’, he returned to his natural LT position this year. He’s looked average at best, though he’s been dinged up a bit. Definite downgrade from Branden Albert playing at LT last year.

Ted Larsen: drafted in the 6th Round by the Patsies* in the ’10 Draft (they cut him before the season started), he’s now on his 4th team in his 8th year. Positional versatile (G/C), he’s been on I/R-DtR. Nothing special here as a LG.

Anthony Steen: ’16 UDFA from Alabama. He’s still developing, but nothing special here as a LG and definite downgrade from Tunsil playing at LG last year.

Mike Pouncey: R1P15 in ’11. Doctors say he’ll need hip replacement surgery in 5-10 years, plus he has a knee issue. Hasn’t finished a full season since ’12. He hasn’t helped the running game at all this year. His overall skills seem to be waning, though he’s still good against pass-rushers (PFF metrics).

Jermon Bushrod: Contemplated retirement after last season, only came back for the Phins…. this is likely his last season. Some cite him as our best O-Lineman this season as he’s been solid. Very good re-signing here, but he’ll likely need to be replaced in ’18.

Ja’Wuan James: R1P19 in the ’14 Draft. Some cite him as our best O-Lineman this season (PFF). We exercised his 5th-year option for ’18, which will pay him over $9M. Still has problems with speed-rushers off the edge and can’t be considered one of the top-5 at his position considering his draft position and ’18 pay.

    — Our running game has taken a huge hit this year due to a lack of run-blocking.
    — Our pass-pro is considerably worse this year when looking at the tape. Jay Cutler’s pocket presence is the only reason we’re not on pace for 40+ sacks yielded this season.
    — Waiting until the 5th Round to address the O-Line was not only foolish, Isaac Asiata can’t even get on the field.
    — We MUST address the O-Line EARLY (no later than day 2) in the ’18 Draft.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Tunsil was considered a strong pass protection guy as I recall. Not very good at run blocking. I think we owe him a chance to get comfortable

I’m less worried about James – but at the same time, I would not call myself committed

Pouncey seems over. But we will know for sure by December if he has anything left.

Who knows about Larsen. Bushrod has never been great as an OG. I don’t think Steen is a guy you rely on.

I think there is a chance we have our bookends in ’18 in Tunsil and James
and then make bigger moves in terms of the interior
It would not be crazy to me to go 1st, 2nd and 3rd round OL in one draft
And then we might utilize Free Agency too

Tunsil is a bit of a wildcard to me – maybe he is better suited to be an OG in the NFL. If the team makes that decision going forward – then they can draft an OT in the 1st round

  8. drg's avatar drg says:

Gase going scorched earth on the team was nice to see. I really think he is the right guy despite our struggles on offense. It’s going to take some time to get the OL right. Two years from now I’d be surprised if we have even 2 of the current starters on the team. It’s frustrating to devote so many assets to the OL for such little return, but no sense crying about it or giving guys a pass due to draft status. Blow it up and get guys in that will operate the way our coach wants.

As for Tannehill, I think he is the guy for a long time here. I don’t think his ceiling is as high as some other QBs out there, but he seems like the type of guy that Gase will want around. Tannehill is a smart, dedicated, hard working kid. He’s an Alex Smith type that should only get better and can take advantage of a defense. It’s up to the FO to give him a line and some weapons.

After the Baltimore debacle, I’m not sure it really matters who we put at QB. I still think Moore gives us a better chance to win, but Fales will be in if both QBs keep getting hit at the rate we’ve seen.

  9. Foerster didn’t do anything to help our OL development this year. He was too busy snorting lines off hookers asses. The entire preseason and training camp OL practices , workouts, and class sessions were wasted instead of utilized.
We have talent on our OL, if we had some great coàching instead of great cocaine, it would make a huge differance IMO

“The Miami Dolphins are among the teams active in trade talks as the NFL trade deadline looms Tuesday at 4 p.m., according to multiple league sources.

The sources did not wish to discuss specifics of what the Dolphins are doing other than to say the team is willing to be both a seller and a buyer — both willing to part with certain players currently on the roster and willing to add players to its roster…..The Dolphins apparently are trying to exchange players.”

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

because of our cap the only way a trade can happen is if we trade a player away. I doubt many teams out there want any of our players. Maybe Landry. I wouldn’t trade Landry though.

  11. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

    Piggy,
I think it’s stupid of FO to trade albert and not think about the LT position without actually knowing if tunsil can do the job. That’s a pretty important position to take such a risk.

The handful of times that tunsil played LT last year it was pretty obvious he wasn’t ready IMO.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Im under the impression that Tunsil was fine at LT
I don’t think the Albert decision was a huge factor in our problems
When we drafted Tunsil, it seemed inevitable
If we still had Albert now playing LT we would be talking about moving forward without him right now – so I don’t think the FO created a problem

      • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

Right now compared to last year I think Tunsil was a better LG than LT. As mf13 said, maybe he’s a guard not a tackle and we should draft a LT next year.

  13. BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

It sounds like Gase doesn’t like the way our RBs are playing. I agree.

“It comes down to more than just the offensive line,” Gase said. “A majority of the time the offensive line at least knows who to go to and knows what to do. We’ve got to get the other guys to know what to do, too. They can’t block the running back’s guy. Running back, we never blocked the right guy. I don’t even know if we know who we got. So … we got to get that fixed.”

    • BoulderPhinfan's avatar BoulderPhinfan says:

He also said. Maybe we trade for a rb?

““I’m going to play the guys that know what to do,” Gase said. “Might not be happy — the fan base might not like it — but oh well. We’re the worst offense in football. It’s hard to go lower than that.”

  15. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Ajayi has 138 carries and Williams and Drake have 22 combined carries

So if Gase is upset about the RB play it sounds like Ajayi is the guy to blame

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Williams’ blocking is also an issue and Drake has been called out for not sticking to the script.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Gase is specifically attacking players going for the “home run” he’s talking about RB carries specifically

And most of the carries this year have been by Ajayi

He may be disappointed that Drake hasn’t earned any playing time. It sounded like before the season he wanted drake to have a larger role, so maybe it’s just frustration that he’s not working hard enough, and maybe not grasping his responsibilities.

This offense has been bad for awhile. This is nothing new. Where’s Gase and his offensive wizardry been?

  18. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Feel horrible for Zach Miller. They are trying to save his leg. Ugh!

  19. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Tim,
No, it was bad last year. Statistically, we were at or near the bottom of the league in many categories. ToP, penalties, third down conversion, red zone scoring, total offense. People have said we were good last year, but the stats don’t back that up….but nobody wants to hear it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We were good in red zone last year. That’s where we scored most of our points.

What we’re seeing now isn’t even competitive. We were at least competitive last year.

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Plus, you run plays in practice over and over again. You go over assignments in meetings over and over. If a guy isn’t getting his assignments right repeatedly, you pull him and put in the next guy….and the other guy doesn’t get back in until he shows he can do it right. This stuff doesn’t just pop up in games, so i’m not giving Gase a pass on this. It’s on him if he’s allowing it to go on Monday through Saturday. Why would he be surprised it isn’t getting done right on Sundays?

  21. D's avatar D says:

I do not think we will try to trade Landry but i decided id play devils advocate and try to find a match that i think would work, and a team i think it would work with just for the sake of giving Lou’s assertion some legs.

First, the team. IMO it would have to be an on the cusp team, a team that needed a player like Landry to put them in contention this year. That means it couldn’t be some team with very little aspirations of crawling out of the cellar to go on to a playoff run. It also would have to be a team that wa hurting in some way at WR, even if it was hurting in a we need a player to complete the set of 3 WR’s we use in most formations. Last, they would need to be a team with the cap space to likely sign him past this year, as in i don’t think they would be thinking rental, but rather long term. They would also have to have something we needed, that could be draft picks, or it could be other players.

I know Lou has suggested Jax, but i just dont see that as a good trade partner. I dont think they fit the mold listed above, well maybe a little but its not a great fit.

My pick for that match up is Detroit. The Lions seem to be missing something. They have a helluva team and despite 3-4 right now they are still in a good place to turn things around and make a push into the playoffs, especially with GB losing Rogers, and the Vikings hanging in there with a backup QB. A player like Landry would make short crossing pattern plays almost impossible to defend with Tate and Landry. It would open up more plays for Galloday on deeper routes. I think he would mean more to that offense than anything else they could hope to get.

What we would want. First i would want a player in return and probably a pick as well. If the idea is that Landry elevates their team to a playoff level then they would be at least a 20ish pick in the first. If they denied me the player i wanted i would want their first round pick, because this trade would likely end our season and its going to have to be worth something to do it. The player i would be going for would be Eric Ebron. Ebron isnt a good blocking TE, but he cant be worse than Thomas and he definitely is a better offensive target. He has had a rough go of it in Detroit and they might be willing to part with him as he doesn’t factor into their offense heavily and they have another young guy in Michael Roberts they could turn to to pick up the slack. We cut or Trade Thomas after we pick him up, and get back about 2.6mil in cap space. I would be asking for their second rounder and Ebron as a package for Landry.

This is what it cost us. Pretty much ends our season. Landry is the only player we have producing at the moment. IF/When we get Parker back, we might still be comparative for the rest of the year, but we would have to lean on him a lot more and he already is having a hard time staying healthy. We would cut Thomas, bring up Morgan, and roll with a combination of Stills, Parker, and a rotation of Grant, Morgan, and Caroo out of the slot. It might also destroy the locker room, as Landry is a very vocal and inspirational leader on our team. Im not sure Gase cares at this point though he wants changes and its possible that Landry has been on of the guys he has been hinting around.

Again, i dont see that as anywhere near likely to happen, BUT if for some reasons Landry has been part of the “better players, who still arent getting it” that Gase has been referring to, maybe it could. If so then i think we would get a young guy to hopefully give us a legit offensive target at TE, and another pick to use to rebuild the offense with next draft. There might even be an outside shot of making a run at the playoffs, even though i think the more likely result would be a 6 win season and no playoffs.

    ————————————-
No he almost specifically called out Ajayi, he said a bunch of different ways without saying his name specifically that made you really feel like it was Ajayi. I dont think he was calling out any of the other backs. Williams maybe because of a couple plays where he should have had the blitz to pick up and he didnt, but Ajayi missed on a bunch of those too.

  23. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The Redskins could really use some receiver help. I still don’t think we’re trading Landry, but the Skins need help at WR if they want to compete in the NFC East

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

They really have been let down by Pryor. What in the world happened to him? People go to Cleveland to end their career, not blow up like he did. Now he’s invisible on a decent team with a good QB.

    • D's avatar D says:

I wouldn’t want us to trade Landry either, unless they completely feel like they cant re-sign him before FA, and really only then IF we also dont think we can match what another team might offer. Im going to be pissed though if we made the effort to sign Stills and let Landry walk. Landry, to me, is much more important of a player to our team than Stills.

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I don’t think WR matters anymore. They got to get some people that can frickin block. Nothing else matters.
Gase can call out the “RB”, but come on…..he’s getting hit in backfield as soon as he gets the ball.

      • D's avatar D says:

Not what it looks like to me. On running plays, there isnt enough north and south running right now. He makes it to the line but he isnt going with the play. The whole defense is shifting with us on the plays so there isnt much to work with, but he is also going away from his strengths and doing a ton of dancing at the point of contact. As a result we have been losing yards on running plays. I think though he was more mad about not picking up the blitzes, and not knowing what the assignments were and just doing his part.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Jeremy Sprinkle and their 2nd.

  24. D's avatar D says:

“Well, as the quarterback, Moore is in part responsible for setting some of the blocking protections before the snap. And as CBS analyst Tony Romo, a former Pro Bowl quarterback, noted several times during the broadcast, Moore apparently didn’t do that. So if the quarterback is failing to manage one of his pre-snap responsibilities, that hurts the protection and it seems to everyone watching that it was a failing of the offensive line.”

“Here’s another thing that isn’t the offensive line’s fault: Dolphins running backs have been responsible for at least four of the 16 sacks the Dolphins have allowed this year. That’s 25 percent of Miami’s sacks on the running backs.

“To me it comes down to more than just the offensive line,” coach Adam Gase said. “The majority of the time, the offensive line at least knows who to go to and knows what to do. You’ve got to get the other guys to know what to do, too. (The offensive line) can’t block the running back’s guy.

“The running back, we never block the right guy. I don’t even know if we know who we’ve got. We’ve got to get that fixed. They can’t block their guy too. (The offensive line is) trying to do what they can and they’re fighting. There’s times where I wished they would do things better, but at least I’m getting effort.””
    —————————————-
Again, there is a theme here we have been hearing over and over, yes you see the pass pro fail nd it looks like OL, but the coaches, who know what they called and what the protections were supposed to be know that its not been all them, and when it has its at least not because they dont know what they are doing because they arent prepared, its because one of them (both Steen and Davis while in at OG, are first year starters at the position, technically Tunsil is too, and he also doesnt look like he is playing healthy right now. Pretty sure Pouncey is both still knocking off the rust and still not 100%” Our OL needs all the help it can get and its not getting shit from the RB’s and TE’s..

Reads like a writer speculating on what’s wrong like he rest of us have been

“They don’t love the game” is an old cliche in sports speculation

      • Possibly, but there’s plenty there now and what we’ve seen from guys in the past as far as the effort we’ve seen them give in games. I believe it to be true and I believe this isn’t anything new with this team & that’s why I don’t think they should break the bank for players because once they’ve “arrived” they don’t feel they need to do the work anymore.

Does it apply to all players? Probably not, but it’s probably enough of them to make a difference. I really don’t know how guys can go thru 4 yrs of college playing football and then come up for the draft with an opportunity to play in the NFL & not love the game but it’s probably work ethic related more than anything.

You have people in life who are going to excel at what they do and then you’re going to have others who are just going to skate along and that applies to any kind of work, even professional athletes.

So, speculation? I think not, because if people lack work ethic in other careers there’s no reason to believe that sports would be immune to it.

  25. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

despite embarrassing loss… we are tied for last playoff spot (actually 1/2 game behind in conf record) at mid-season. Which Raider team will we get on Sunday? We’re not gonna tear up the AFC but making playoffs two years in a row would be a nice way to turn around expectations.

    • At this point in time I would rather Gase sit the guys who aren’t playing to expectations because they aren’t doing their jobs and if it means losing a few too many games and causes us to miss the playoffs then I’m okay with that.

Time to weed out the undesirables. This has been going on for too long and if these guys don’t want to play in Miami then let them go play for Cleveland.

  26. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let’s hope the players get the message and the coaches figure it out.

  27. D's avatar D says:

What Gase has been saying isnt that they dont love the game, he’s basically saying they arent mature enough to respect that this is their job and doing whats necessary (ie taking work home with them) to be the best they can be. He is basically saying they aren’t professionals. I think its obvious someone like Landry loves the game, and i highly doubt he is one of the ones that isnt doing his due diligence to be prepared and execute his plays well, but it is possible to love the game and just be lazy about letting your God given gifts get you by. Its a lot easier to think of it as a go out to practice my mandatory amount, put in the mandatory number of hours and then go have fun for the rest of the day.

They are also protected from being over-worked in practices by the CBA. They only are allowed to do 1 padded practice per week, and that Padded practice IF they add on an additional 30 minutes of position specific drills, cannot exceed 3.5 hours, the .5 being the lighter position drills. The 3 hours time limit includes their warmup stretching and calisthenics. They only have 14 total workouts like this all year, and can only have one week (usually reserved for BYE week) where they can have two of these workouts in one week. They arent limited to the number of walk-through’s they can have. There are no rules requiring them to do anything else outside those times.

So if you look at it, that means they have a maximum of 15 3 hour sessions, of live contact. Its also probably closer to 2-2.5 since the warmup is counted and there is a good bit of time in between, going over the plays. 45 hours of work, over the course of their regular season, and they dont have time to come in and get extra help? Lets say they have 23 hours of walk-through’s on 3 other days of the week. You would still only be at a total number of hours being 12hrs per week. Two questions to ask. How in hell can you practice for 3 hours, 4 out of 7 days a week and not know what the fuck you are supposed to do, and how with only 12 hours of committed time per week cant you spend a little extra digging in and finding someone to show you what you are missing, in the case you are one of the ones not getting it.

Its pretty ridiculous for our team to be having this issue. Its either complete apathy or complete idiocy and i hope Gase gets it figured out. If he truly has been baby sitting this shit for that long, then i say he needs to get into boss mode and snatch these kids up and get them straightened out. I wish he would just call them out, id like to know exactly which of these guys are to blame and at what level Gase feels they either arent getting it or arent giving a shit.

I don’t care who the players are, just that they get the message and get their shit together. It wouldn’t be good to name names. Parcells said stuff like this back in the day when his team was playing poorly. A reporter would say something like; “so what’s the problem?”, and he’d reply; “did you watch the game?” LOL

      Same thing with us. Scoring for the offense: 19, 6, 0, 9, 20, 31, 0.
9 passing TDs, 0 rushing and 8 FGs in 7 games.

despite embarrassing loss… we are tied for last playoff spot (actually 1/2 game behind in conf record) at mid-season. Which Raider team will we get on Sunday? We’re not gonna tear up the AFC but making playoffs two years in a row would be a nice way to turn around expectations.
    ——————————————-
Rhino, Gase stated this pretty well. Its not a matter of the W or the L, its a matter of how they did their jobs in the game. He said winning these close games, when we only pulled it out despite playing piss poor has only strengthened the resolve that these players have that he is just bitching for nothing. So i feel like despite the record, how in it or out of it we are, im like him, im not satisfied with this without our team playing good enough to deserve it. I was enjoying the wins, or have been, but that statement he made about it emboldening them and their carefree attitude makes me realize its a false sense of success that wont be long lived. Im hoping that this next game is either a good showing and a good win, because we have straightened some things out (at least for that game) and not because we gutted it out while still playing awful football. We need to grow and get rid of that bad characteristic and im not really going to be satisfied the rest of the way out until we start seeing that.

  29. D's avatar D says:

I would like to see Gase sit all the players that havent been playing their assignments correctly. Let someone else get a start in their spot and then make them earn getting their spot back. I hope he follows through with the statement he made about those that are prepared will play. Im not a fan that would be upset by that at all. Id rather have a coach with control over his team and that hold his players accountable. The wins will come if you are able to manage your team like that, and the wins will never be consistent if you cant.

  30. D's avatar D says:

I think some of our players have for sure bucked up since their first year. Grant was working hard to work out his fubmling issues in the off season. Caroo got his problems figured out and has been working hard to keep the weight off and stay in good shape. Even Phillips who was notoriously apathetic to doing the extra works seems to have put in some extra work that has paid off. It seems like we just have some players that have lost focus. I think they love the game just fine, i think they just have forgottoen that they have to come out and work their butts off to stay at the top of their game.

This is one of those things that tests a coach and give you an idea if he is a decent, good or great coach. He gets this straightened out, then he earns some coaching points, he doesn’t then he loses some and maybe he is also part of the problem. We will have to see how he handles this and what the outcome is.

  31. D's avatar D says:

I guess Tim i meant more to say, call them out by not starting them, just naming them would be pointless if you didnt follow up wit it, but these are men playing like children. Shame them and see if they come around and if they dont then you know you got a lemon that you need to deal with. Men should be expected to act as men.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t bench a lot of guys but I would rotate them more to see who is willing to play hard with passion and urgency. Then shape your depth chart off of that.

The issue I have is we’ve seen all these guys play well at times so I don’t see lemons. To me it’s more about a kick in the ass that it’s not good enough.

      • D's avatar D says:

Its important for most players to “start” so i would allow some of the other players to start the games and then i might rotate the others in. Id start though by rewarding the players that are putting effort towards their craft with playing time, and specifically game starts.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Gase has said he’s tried to get other players involved but has been reluctant trying to stick with who gives us the best chance to win the game. Based on how things are going, it shouldn’t be hard to do now. Anyone can score 0 including you and I. LOL

Here we go; The #Seahawks have traded for OT Duane Brown, source said. From Seattle to Houston, back to Seattle.

  33. D's avatar D says:

Tim its not about playing well, its about doing your job. They can break a big run, and think to themselves “see going off the script is the best thing i can do” but what it does it undermine the game plan, it also wont be successful but 2 times out of 10, and doing that makes us go to 3rd and long. There was a play i saw someone was pointing out a Ajayi run. they were creating a seam to the inside, it was there, it wasnt a big ass gaping hole, but it was a decent seam in that defense, and with the LB’s blocked he would have been all the way to the 3rd level before he was touched. He went off script and we got shut down. People might call that bad blocking on the OL, but it was clean, and it was Ajayi’s fault that didnt work. Now on its own, thats one play, but that play and being succesful helps other plays work. You do your job and stop trying to be the hero, pad your stats or make every touch a home run, and things work a lot better for the TEAM. Thats why Gase is pissed. There is a lot of that and not a lot of knowing what they are suppose to be doing on plays, not a lot of just simple take ball run with ball get your 2-5 yards and then come back and do it again.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Playing well to me is doing your job. Probably just semantics here and I agree on Ajayi. Receivers also go lateral too often instead of picking up the 1st down right in front of them. I believe that is also part of the “instead of hitting a HR” comment.

This team needs to focus on stringing 1st downs together rather than always trying to make the big play. That will come when you’re in a groove.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Also on returns, Grant does this trying to hit the HR. We’ll take the ball in solid field position over inside our 20. The big returns will come if he starts doing that. We have to start playing more north and south. The east/west shit is killing us.

  42. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So once Garoppolo is up to speed he starts and Beathard will be the backup for the 49ers. Not a bad QB situation moving forward. Garoppolo was a UFA in 2018 and the Pats knew they couldn’t pay him. Some team would have come calling. The 49ers have a ton of cap space and a need for a QB. Good trade for them. They can focus on other positions now.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The 49ers will sign Garoppolo to a starter’s salary. They didn’t trade what will likely be a high 2nd for a 2018 UFA QB to lose him. That would be the most ridiculous trade you could think of. What do they think… they’re gonna go on a run and win the Super Bowl, they’re 0-8?

Garoppolo is their QB for the next few years.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So my dilemma in 2018 FF will be protecting Aaron Rodgers or Carson Wentz? I’m in a 4 protect 10 team league and I don’t believe in protecting two QBs. You hurt your options for other positions starting in the 5th round with your first pick. RBs go really fast.

Drake has barely been used, and isn’t developed enough for prime time yet , with his pass blocking and receiving still unrefined.
We can use a 4th round pick, but this is a lopsided trade in favor of eagles. They basically ripped us off, and we went with it.

We can look at this a bunch of different ways. Ajayi was not killing it this year by any means. He had a couple of good games, but has been held in check. If he’s not following assignments properly, well that’s a problem. Now I’d prefer that Gase get Ajayi to fix the problem rather than trade him, but maybe it got to the point that Ajayi just wasn’t listening, and Gase did what he had to do. We’ll probably never know, but how the team responds to this is big too. If everyone steps up their game, and sustains that, it was a smart move.

I don’t think moving ajayi was a bad play. I just don’t see a viable replacement on the roster. But as Gase said, we’re the worst offense in NFL how much lower can it go?

I think the compensation is low, but its a round higher than we paid to get him. I think Gase was just over it and was take whatever they are offering.

  81. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Boulder – We have no idea what Drake can do, and Williams is a hard runner who is a good receiver out of the backfield. Is either one or even a combo of the two as good as Ajayi when he’s on? Probably not, but maybe we’ll be pleasantly surprised

    • D's avatar D says:

I think Drake is the kind of runner Ajayi is, he accelerates through his tacklers. He also has a bit more homerun ability one he makes that first cut. I dont know though if he is the load that Ajayi was, because he was one of the most punishing runners i have seen outside of maybe Marshawn or Ricky Williams. We will miss him for sure, but i dont know that we will miss him if the others will at least just do their job like they are supposed to. I dont see Ajayi trade as being a give up on the season though, but if we do trade Landry, i think we are effectively giving up on the season and we are going to be playing younger players to get them experience from here on out.

TB is definitely WAY below their potential.

      • wait til we play TB and You will see what I’m saying, they will beat us badly IMO

Jax is on the way up with Coughlin pushing the buttons, notice the emphasis this year on their running game, the way you win in the NFL is you run the ball and play D, unless of course you’re Tom Brady, they are tied for 1st and i think they will win that division and be a playoff team this year.

I had thought about them, they were my first choice for a trade partner, but i just felt like with only 1 win at the time, they werent going to be trading for to try and make a run. • D's avatar D says:

Again, im not for trading him and i definately think its unlikely we trade him, but after the trade of Ajayi, its possible we are tapping out and just going to ride out the season and try to recoup for next year. Yeah when i started considering the possibility of trading Landry they made the most sense, except the position they are in currently. They arent really making a playoff run right now. It would take a miracle to get to that spot, but if they cut Stabby, and re-sign Landry to roughly the same amount they should be able to keep him and stay close to where they are cap wise. they might have to let some pricey guys go next year but they got a couple on their team right now that could easily go. They could still trade JPP, i know i have heard a bunch of rumors regarding him being traded.

  95. D's avatar D says:

IMO, Drake and Smith can = Ajayi, i know thats hard to say when neither guy have gotten snaps really at RB. Williams to me is also a liability because he is awful at blocking. I kind of wish they had asked for Blount as part of the trade with Philly. Drake, Blount and Smith would be a really nice RB set. Im not a big fan of Williams, although he does make a good receiving option in 3rd down situations, but when we have been needing a back who can pass pro, he is pretty awful at that.
