Week 10 – Game 9 – Dolphins @ Panthers MNF

dolphins-panthers

Monday Night Football!  The Mecca of matchups!  Eh, not anymore . . .   Marquis matchups have been completely and thoroughly watered down by TNF, SNF, and sometimes even Saturday Night Football.  Can’t say it enough, but it’s time the NFL drops Thursday Night Football.  Maybe if they had 2 a year, that would be special, and only for teams coming off a BYE week.  Also, no need for Sunday Night Football either, leave Monday Night Football as the marquis matchup, and dump SNF.  I don’t even want to talk about Saturday Night Football.  Do they realize that some of us fans are married, or in a relationship?  “OK honey, you remember I’m watching football tonight, and all day tomorrow, and then Monday Night too, right?”  Yeah, good luck with that!

So the Ajayi-less Dolphins travel to Carolina to play the Panthers.  The Dolphins are not the only team who’s accomplished their record with smoke and mirrors.  If the Dolphins have no business being 4-4, then the Carolina Panthers certainly have no business being 6-3.  Carolina’s defense has been their savior, but their offense isn’t all that much better than ours.  Cam Newton is what I’ve always thought he was, a super athletically talented QB who in reality, just isn’t that good a QB.  Cam has a QBR of 78.4, with 1978 yards passing, 10 TD’s/11 INT’s.    To his credit, he’s completing passes at a much higher percentage than his entire career, 62.4%,  but take away his rushing threat as a QB, and this guy just doesn’t cut it.

The Panthers defense has been inconsistent, pitching great games against the Niners, Bills and Bucs allowing only 3 runs (points).  On the the bad side, they gave up 34 to the Saints (L 34-13), 30 to the Patriots (W 33-30), and 28 to the Eagles (L 28-23).  The defense of course features the league’s best MLB, Luke Keuchly, along with other standouts,  LB Thomas Davis, LB Shaq Thompson, DT Kawann Short, DE’s Mario Addison and Julius Peppers, 6.5 sacks and 7.5 sacks respectively, and DT Star Lotuleilei

On offense, the Kelvin Benjamin-less Panthers bring a 2 headed backfield attack with a power attack from Jonathan Stewart, and a RB/WR hybrid Christain McCaffery (Former Bronco’s WR Ed McCaffrey’s son).  Stewart barely leads the team in rushing with 350 yards, just 9 yards ahead of one Cam Newton.  McCaffrey easily leads the team in receptions with 54, and has 406 yards receiving along with 2 TD’s.  He also has 183 yards rushing, to give him nearly 600 all purpose yards.

W9 : Oakland vs Miami

The Dolphins will once again bring their own 2 headed rushing attack of Damien Williams and Kenyan Drake.  So far, it looks like Williams is more McCaffrey while Drake is more Stewart, but don’t be surprised to see Drake catch more passes, and Williams get some more carries too. It’s a work in process, and I don’t believe anyone’s role has been defined.  Devante Parker is back, and WOW what a catch he made last Sunday night!  Ted Larsen should be starting at LG, which will probably mean Jesse Davis, who played LG this past Sunday will now move out to RT to replace hamstring injured Ja’Wuan James.  Davis will mostly be going up against Charles Johnson on rushing downs, and Julius Peppers on passing downs, both good, veteran DE’s.  Keep an eye on that, as the Dolphins will be sending some help over to his side.

fl-sp-dolphins-20171108

On defense, we get recently activated off suspension S T.J. McDonald back!  TE Ed Dickson is quietly having a nice season for the Panthers, and w/o Benjamin, he may be targeted even more, so look to see if T.J. McDonald is a factor there, or do we let Kiko Alonso chase him around all night.  We’ll see Sunday night.  The defense looks so good at times, and so bad at times, you just don’t know what to expect.  I hope T.J. brings some much needed energy, and maybe a guy who can cover a TE effectively.

Now, for the moment everyone has been waiting for!  Fest photos!

Ok, one more . . .

With all the talk about the salary cap in 2018, Armando did say a couple of weeks ago before we traded Ajayi that sources from inside the building told him the offense is going to go through a bit of an overhaul for the 2018 season. It hinted that Gase doesn’t exactly like the way it’s setup and doesn’t have all the pieces he wants.

    Good stuff Mike

But hoping the NFL drops Thursdau night (or Sunday night) is a pipe dream IMO

Here is way too much $ in it for the NFL to drop it

I personally think the NFL is straddling the edge of saturating the market with so much football but I doubt they recognize he mystique they are losing and I’m guessing the profit outweighs that

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Players hate it, and more and more players are and coaches are speaking out about it. They may reduce the amount of games they out on TNF, and that’s a step in the right direction.

Stangerx, I am sorry to have thrown you into a depression 😉 but I cannot overlook that the way they have played they SHOULD be at 0-8 right now. No amount of alcohol / drugs / secret homeraid ingredients can make me overlook how dreadfully awful the offense has been this year. They have been historically bad. Our justice system is so freakin wacked. Planned and executed a murder plot, admitted to it, and she gets 4 years.

The moral of the story is, if you are going to execute a spouse, make sure you do it by sawing halfway through the rope holding them to the cliff, or drill a hole in their boat, or cut the brake lines. Anything that doesn’t involve you killing them directly with a gun or a knife. SMH

  33. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It was actually Alvin Garrett in Cosell’s monkey metaphor. “That monkey gets loose, doesn’t he?”
But it makes no difference. They also had Charlie Brown then, and both of them were very small WRs, which is why Cosell said he referred to them as monkeys, noting their frenetic style. He had previously referred to Mike Adamle, a white very small guy, as a monkey, so Cosell said he just used that term that way and even referred to his grandchildren as “monkeys loose in the backyard.”

As a coincidence, Adamle was a color commentator for that Redskins game, about 10 years after Cosell had called him the same unfortunate animal-comparison.

There was no “PC crowd” then. The black head of SCLC called for Cosell’s firing, although Jesse Jackson and Muhammad Ali defended Cosell, who quit. He did not get fired.

I watched the whole thing live. I was 31 years old.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I watched it live too. I don’t remember all the particulars of what happened afterwards, but in some regard, that still is a PC stance. What else would you call it?

Sorry … did not mean to be disputing your call at all, just had never heard that term back then.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – I’m not being argumentative, and to be fair, I can assure you they didn’t call it “PC” back then, but to me, it’s exactly what PC is. Rather than try and take something at face value and in context, it’s just someone is butthurt, and now someone has to be the fall guy because of that.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Suh made PFF’s mid-season All Pro team, despite some old bad habits coming back.
    ———————-
The second spot inside was a tight battle, with several players in the running. Suh is only really held back by his penalty count, which is again the highest mark among interior defenders (nine). Suh though has the second-best PFF grade among all interior defenders against the run (93.0) and has 23 total pressures.

He’s mauling people this year. I mean last year the dude was a beast, but this year he may be even topping last years production. His stats might not reflect it, i haven’t bothered looking at them closely, but he is more disruptive this year than even last.

  38. D's avatar D says:

Im thinking if we finish in the top 10, lots of changes will happen. I could see us cut or not resign most the position players on offense. I think we could see a new QB, possibly 2 new WR’s, 1 new RB and 2 new OL by start of next season.

We might wind up letting Landry walk, and cutting Stills, even after that re-sign last year. I think Thomas is a dead man walking, and if they go full rebuild we cut Pouncey and Tanny, and we wouldnt re-sign Williams or Moore.

Some would be easy to replace and other maybe not so much, but i have a feeling if we are not still holding our own by years end, we may look exactly the same on defense, but the offense is going to be damn near a whole new unit.

  39. In a recent speaking engagement, Bob Costas of NBC Sports talked about what he called “the decline of American football” and, in a nutshell, said “it destroys people’s brains”.

Unfortunately, I believe what he says to be true and if they don’t find a way to make it safer in that respect, and that’s something that may not be able to be done, I can see the sport going away forever.

I doubt people are going to continue to look at it from a risk vs reward point of view when playing the game and taking the money over their health. Don’t know how much longer it’s going to be around but it’s not going to survive if the long-term health of players will continue to be effected so dramatically.

Just thinking that if goes away on a college level, wow, what a huge financial hit it’s going to be to a great number of colleges and universities in this country.

    • D's avatar D says:

You cant make concussions not a part of football. There is no equipment you can use to take that away. It doesnt take a crazy hard hit to get one. It just takes an abrupt change in mostion that would cause the broan to bounce off the skulls. Being tackled, not hit in the head does that, landing on the ground by your own force does that. I mean you could make it flag football, but even then if you dive for that pass, and whip your head against the ground, you could have one.

At some point you are right though, people are going to have to decide if the sport is worth keeping around, is it worth playing, is it worth watching knowing you might see a person take a hit that makes them a vegetable. The money though is hard to turn away from, and im not talking about just the players, im talking about the broadcast ratings, the merchandising, the commercial revenues, etc. I mean its the highest grossing sport in professional sports, and if you have a football team at your University or HS the revenues it generates usually can fund all the other sports., I doubt that it gets shutdown just for those reasons.

Its a hardcore brutal sport, and there isnt much you can do to change that, no rule adjustments, no technologically advanced equipment, etc. None of that will do anything but shrink the percentages by a very small amount.I mean hell we have been making changes to make the equipment better and the rules to prevent dangerous hits on players, and the injury rates are still actually going up. We made sure that anytime a person is even though to have potentially had a concussion we go through this rigorous protocol that makes sure they don’t go back until they are recovered, and still….. I just dont think there is ever going to be a time when we can feel like football is a safe sport.

      • Yeah, football is probably never going to be safer or become a safe sport to play. Especially with the speed of the game these days compared to years ago and the violent impacts. It may come down to the players signing releases and saying they’re going to assume the risk associated with concussions. I don’t know.

But, I’m also wondering if more and more players are shown to have the brain issues associated with concussions if the fans will continue to support the game knowing the health effects the players will suffer. If fans have enough of a conscience to turn away from the game that’s the thing that will put an end to it. Then, the money will no longer be there.

I dont know if Benett is a worth while investment at this point in his career, but he is a really good fit for what Gase wants to do at TE. Dont believe we can afford to add him though. Even cutting Thomas, where we could pick up 3mil off this years cap, probably cant squeeze him in.

I dont hink the fans of football will ever turn away from watching it just because of the hard hits that might be career ending, hell people scour the internet or pust taped games where players legs snap and flop around like a fish, almost with just morbid desire to watch it over and over. We are callous to it. Its like the Nascar fans, which a lot of them are somewhat hoping for a collision. We are not far removed from a level if civility that had gladiators fighting to the death or being mauled by animals in a Colosseum when you get down to it.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to see how Thomas finishes up this season. He had his best game Sunday night and maybe he’s starting to fit in. He has 4 catches of 20 yards or more behind only Stills and Parker with 5 each even though Parker has missed 3 games. Our offense hasn’t been stable all season but maybe we needed some time to get on the same page. OL, QB, RB and even TE have gone through some ups and downs and changes. It hasn’t been an ideal situation. We’ll see how it plays out.

    • Cutler missed the offseason so his first few games were like his offseason. You could see him becoming more comfortable and more confident with his guys. That being said, the offensive line being what it is, not having the ability to run block and not having a rb who can stick it up in the hole is going to be tough to overcome

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s what I’m saying nothing has been ideal the way you would draw it up. Cutler coming in late, Pouncey coming back from injury, Tunsil moving to LT, new LGs and backup C, two new TEs, moving on from Ajayi. We can’t seem to get the offense to have continuity. Maybe we can moving forward and build on that. Then in the offseason assess who fits and who doesn’t. I doubt Bushrod will be back so RG will be open next year as well.

      • Yes, difficult to overcome everything that’s happened this year.

“Will you use it to go fishing instead of buying food?” I asked.

“No, I don’t waste time fishing,” the homeless man said..”I need to spend all my time trying to stay alive.”

“Well,” I said, “I’m not going to give you money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.”

    • D's avatar D says:

The Falcons game and the Chargers i know for sure were really standout games for him. Those were pass rushers that give most guys fits and he handled them very well. He had problems against Jordan of the Saints, but most people do he is a really big dude who can switching in and out between elite power rush and speed rush moves. His game against the Ravens was a pretty good one, even though the score showed not much else worked for us. He wasnt great but not awful against the Jets both times. I think if anything he definitely has been more good than bad this year.

I think the big deal with how soon they have to make this decision is because of his 5th year option that kicks in day 1 of the new league year. If that option kicks in, his salary is fully guaranteed no matter what, so cutting him after that point wouldnt make room for us to sign anyone else using the money we saved on him.

  64. Randy's avatar Randy says:

You gotta play who you got, but Davis is going to struggle at RT. We may have no choice but to continue throwing really short passes or Cutler may be killed. Plus, Bushrod has struggled all year, and he is not going to be much help to a new RT. Larsen is not a major upgrade. He’s been in the league long enough that we know what he is. He’s a very average player…some might say slightly below average. He’s probably better than what we’ve been trotting out there at RG…but not by much. I hope i’m wrong.

  65. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I really hate the way Mando phrases it
“If the Dolphins don’t think an inconsistent RT is worth 9 million they might rescind the option”

I think that’s a real oversimplification of what the team weighs when keeping a guy or not

How many players are really worth millions of dollars
The real questions are cap space and whether the team can upgrade with the money saved

I think there’s an easy answer to that
    The answer is NO
You arent going to rescind an option to James and sign an upgrade for less than 9m

You migh draft a replacement but I don’t think it’s wise to open a hole at one position and assume you will fix it in the draft

I tend to think James will be under contract next year – unless his long term health is really a problem

Ie the contract language that says, fully guaranteed against injury, isnt active right now, so sending him to IR wouldnt kick in the guarantees. If we put him on IR next year, after that language is in effect, we cannot get out of the guaranteed money. He will count against the cap if he is her or not.

if you’re Ross do you give Gase a pass this year due to Tannehills injury?
    —————————————–
I think there are a lot of things that Gase can still be judged on that have nothing to do with W’s and L’s, or one QB leading a team vs another. They should focus on how they felt like he dealt with that adversity and how he did with what he had. I think a knock against him is going to be the Ajayi situation, not sending him packing, that might actually be considered an appropriate resolution, but how long he let things go before making a move, or not being able to get him to get back in line, before having to take more drastic measures surely doesnt look great management wise. There are a ton of way to evaluate his performance outside of just looking at the record.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It really wasn’t that long in terms of having issues with Ajayi. Gase was patient with him and Ajayi was productive last year so he kind of had to ride with it. This year he said enough is enough. Was he supposed to trade him last year when he was rushing for 200+ yards? That would have looked worse.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im just suggesting thats one of the things that he might be judged on. How they will judge him on it could go either way, he can look like he exhausted all effort before getting there or he could be looked at as not having done it soon enough, thats all in the eyes of the person who is evaluating him. I dont have a problem with how he handled it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t think Ross or the FO has a problem with how he handled it either and they’re the only ones who matter.

  70. D's avatar D says:

I think James will be on our team IF we think he will be back at some point next year. Im afraid though that if he isnt going to be able to, we might cut him before the end of the year so that we avoid having to fully guarantee his contract next year. Sounds cold, but we can either have an extra 9mil in salary cap and use it to get a replacement, even if its a 1 year rental, or we can just have 9mil + in space sitting there and knowing we wont have him at all. One other option would be to extend him, and make next years cap hit be small and giving him guarantees that might make him feel more secure about his future past 2018.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think plans to extend him before 2018 kicked in was always the plan, now thought, it would have to happen BEFORE the new business year, instead of anytime before FA.

I know Rock, but the 5th year option doesnt officially kick in until beginning of the business year this coming year.

I think you are wrong. See below.

In order to extend the contract, the team must inform the player during the period between the last regular season game of the player’s third contract year and May 3 of the next League Year (Article 7, Sec. 7, (a), 31).

The fifth-year option is non-negotiable, and the non-compensation terms from a player’s rookie contract will also be included in the fifth-year option.

Many terms allowed in other contracts are prohibited from the fifth-year option. These terms include option bonuses, option exercise fees, option nonexercise fees, option buyouts, or any other compensation that stems from the team exercising or declining the 5th-year option (Sec. 7 (d), 31).

When a team exercises the option, it becomes guaranteed for injury only. If the player is on the team’s opening-day Active/Inactive roster for the option year, his salary becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap, and injury.

  72. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Is $9M a year that much money for a tackle anymore? Hell, even guards are getting mega deals. James has played pretty good this year. I’d have no problem paying him $9M a year if they feel comfortable with his health.
    ****
And I have no idea what the hell Gase is saying about Pouncey. He has gotten his ass whooped many times this year. I think Pouncey must be Gase’s connection because Gase sure seems to have a hardon for the guy.

From the Armando article that Mike posted.
“James is locked in for next year with the Dolphins because they exercised a fifth-year option that guarantees him just under $9 million and protects him for injury.

But the Dolphins have the right to rescind that option before the start of the 2018 league year and that would make James an unrestricted free agent.”

  75. D's avatar D says:

You just proved my point Rock…..

When a team exercises the option, it becomes guaranteed for injury only. If the player is on the team’s opening-day Active/Inactive roster for the option year, his salary becomes fully guaranteed for skill, cap, and injury.

The option year is 2018…not 2017 they had to make the decision to exercise the option in 2017, but the option itself is for the 5th year which is 2018.

    • D's avatar D says:

Hmmmm i see what oyu are saying now. I didnt catch that first little blurb about the injury settlement being active as soon as its exercised.

      • D's avatar D says:

If that’s the case we should keep him on the roster, its not going to cost us anything more or less to do so.

  76. D's avatar D says:

Randy i only remember seeing one bad game, and im not 100% sure it was his fault. It was Davis’ first game and people credited him with a good game but i saw Pouncey having to help him with his gy and then fall back over an try to pick up his and it wasnt working out very well. That was one of those ones where i saw PFF give Davis a good grade and really disagreed. I think thats why Gase can make statements that seem completely to the contrary to ours, he knows what was called, he knows who was whose assignment and he knows who maybe didnt play as well, but it was because they were covering someones mistakes.

  77. D's avatar D says:

But the Dolphins have the right to rescind that option before the start of the 2018 league year and that would make James an unrestricted free agent.”

D, I see you saw now. I was going to respond again but refreshed my page first so I saw your post. See saw see saw. That is what I was trying to convey. Putting him on IR this year would trigger the guarantee for next year now. Otherwise the rules wouldn’t be worded that way.

I also think id be tempted to trade back in the first to pick up more picks because we are going to have more holes to fill.

Id be targeting Luke Faulk Or the Thorson kid out of Northwesterns, as my first pick and they are probably 2nd round options. Then probably with one of the extra picks in the 4th id take a guy like Will Grier out of WV. Trade back in the first pick up a 2nd and hopefully get a good WR and TE with 1st and seond pick and our third round we could take an OC.

First off, you do realize that the south was completely democrat for a LONG time, the democrats were the party of the south, while republicans were the part of the North. In fact, id bet that most older people in the south are still registered as democrats.

Secondly, There are no true democrat candidates here, there are only conservatives running on the democrat ticket. There is really no difference in the candidates here, with exception of some true democratic candidates who may get about 2% of the vote, and generally don’t make it through primaries, so Piggy, even if it does make a democrat more ikely to get elected, its still a republican in office lol.

Third, there is corruption everywhere, this guy and his 40 year old allegations are not shocking and they arent likely any less offensive as the shit thats probably going to be dug up on all the rest of the people in congress. New actors and actresses everyday are being called out, several politicians, etc, because all these people are dirty. They live lives completely different than any of us can expect, they have temptations almost none of us are ever going to be tempted with, and yet they are still just ordinary people, not the people we for some reason put on a pedestal and think they are more evolved/civilized/ethical or whatever else we might elevate them to.

I don’t find any of this shocking personally, its just a corner in your house that you might have skipped over cleaning the past few times and now everyone is embarrassed because someone came along and noticed it. This is the purge that Hollywood and DC have needed for a while.

Rock’s intial post talked about the change in the south so I don’t feel the urge to cover it again – and it’s not relevant. We all know that fwiw. But in the current dynamic Alabma is a deeply red state and it’s very hard for a democrat to get elected there

My point is a few republicans have asked him to take his name off the ticket, McConnell publicly did it and I don’t blame him – but there is a 75 day rule so they can’t. And then there is a new idea that people write in strange – and I don’t blame for republicans for trying either but it’s tough to push for a write in

I don’t know a thing about the other candidate burns finding hard to beleive these allegation aren’t devastating to Moore and a windfall for him. No matter conservative he might be (you get the opposite effect here in NY, the republicans are pretty liberal relatively speaking) the way Washington is these days – the mere (D), no pun intended, is devastating. Democrats basically concede that they won’t have a rep from a few states like Alabama in the senate based on recent history and this changes that dynamic

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

But when you are in the voting booth are you going to endorse a guy like that. It’s a little different with a politician – where you can acutely not vote for him and vote for some one else. The election is in early December so it’s going to be on everyone’s mind
