Week 11 – Game 10 – Bucs @ Dolphins

92bucs-dolphins-story

Forget the matchups, forget who’s playing where, forget how many PPG we have or they have, forget about all of that.  I’m not wasting my time researching that crap when this team does one thing consistently, underdeliver. NO ONE on this team is living up to the back of his football card (You can all debate that if you like)  What this team needs to do, and I don’t care how Gase has to get them to do it, is come out, and smack some team in the mouth.  As soon as they get on the field, impose their will, and show that team this is not going to be their day.  Not once this season has this team beat up on anyone.  We haven’t enjoyed one victory where it was a clear cut win where we were firing on all cylinders.  Instead we’ve had to endure at least 2-3 quarters of WTF! football almost every game.

Sunday we host a team playing as poorly as us.  I know the ANY GIVEN SUNDAY deal, but it’s time for this team to show a sign of life, and kick someone’s teeth in!  We have been beaten down and shut out and embarrassed and undressed and tied to motorboats and have the fishes eat at us, but ENOUGH!  Time for this team to give us a game where they kick ass from start to finish, a good old fashioned ass kicking BLOWOUT!

I’m not going to post the usual slogans on the bottom, GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!  I think they  take that too literally, and they’re trying so hard to get zero.

    MF13:
I disagree with your analysis. You are focused strictly on numbers and not on the game film. Watching the games there is a huge difference in our offensive efficiency and it does show most notably in points scored. One big number you seem to gloss over is yards per attempt. Cutler is under 6 which is putrid by NFL standards. Last year Tannehill was well over 7. This is reflective was much better at getting the ball downfield that what Cutler is able to do this year. Historically Tannehill struggled with that but last year he made huge strides in his deep passing game. This not about my personal sentiments about Tannehill it is about watching the game and you cherry picking numbers

  2. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Operator…would you help me make this call….

You see the number on the match book is old and faded…….

  3. But this is what I’m getting at. Ross did a great job on the stadium. No doubting that and I can’t say as though I blame him because that’s what all team owners do/want; a beautiful stadium. But, that’s the game to me.

He made it a nice atmosphere for fans to come to and enjoy the game. Made shade areas for the fans to make it more tolerable on hot days. Put in fancy restaurants for the upper crust. Thing is, as long as people are filling the seats because of how nice the place is he’s going to be happy. The team will always come last. He’s a real estate developer. He knows how to get asses in seats and make money from it and the fans who want to see a winning team will just have to wait.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Ken,

I explicitly stated in my OG post from last night that Cutler’s Y/A are significantly down this year from his career average. I’m not sure what you’re talking about, my friend. I’ve accounted for EVERYTHING. Root cause? Gase is having him dink and dunk all game, all year.

You may want to go back to my OG post! 🙂

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And contrary to what you may think, I am NOT dissing Tannehill… not in the least. I saw his massive strides with the deep ball last year. At least Gase didn’t make him dink and dunk all game, all year last season.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Same playcaller last year as this so I don’t buy that explanation. Last Tannehill got the ball down field this year Cutler doesn’t

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Again, we both observe this phenomenon. Why, I ask, is Adam Gase handcuffing Jay Cutler with dinks-and-dunks?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’m right with the board consensus on the OL….but also sadly makes me laugh at how what we got out of Cutler matches up real well with what I had read for a good long time about him from Bears fans. Dude is an emotional roller coaster. Every time you think you are out on him….he pulls you back in. And that comes from a guy who put him on his FF roster after one preseason game. 🙂

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

What I see when I compare Cutler and Tannehill is that Cutler is afraid to take a hit. He is constantly back pedaling, has happy feet and is throwing off his back foot with piss poor mechanics. I think this leads a lot to the check down passing game. Tannehill was much better at standing tall in the pocket and yes he took more sacks but he got the ball down field better. I also don’t think it is a significant difference in OL but I think it’s a difference in how the 2 of them handle the pressure

  5. Randy's avatar Randy says:

10, 17, 7, 14, 6 and 14. Those were our offensive outputs in some games last year. People seem to forget that this offense has not been proficient in years.

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Folkers, lets play a game tomorrow. Every time Adam Gase calls for a bubble-screen from Cutler, take a shot of your favorite liquor. I GUARANTEE you’ll be azz-out by halftime, and I’M the one who VERY seldom makes a guarantee or makes a bet. I’d be willing to bet a very large sum of $$$ on this!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

“But, but… Tannehill was winging the ball downfield last year! He’s better than Cutler!”

Um… ask Adam Gase why he’s handcuffing Cutler. Cutler isn’t the problem, ADAM GASE is the problem.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And again, Tannehill and Cutler’s statistical outputs are the same. Actually, Cutler’s on pace for more TDs and fewer INTs than Tannehill.

      • It’s true that Gase has handcuffed Cutler and it’s very disheartening when you look at other teams that have qb’s that are less experienced and their OC’s and HC’s are running their offenses instead of dumbing things down.

San Fran only has one win but it’s not stopping Shanahan from giving the entire playbook to Beathard and running the same offense. He’s not dumbed down anything just because he’s got a rookie qb in there.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I’d be drunk as anything on that, but then also give credit to Gase for the fact that I would. Leaving aside where the OL is….a big factor he has to scheme around is Cutler is gun-shy and that was the last thing Tanny was. And if Cutler knows he is not going to get hit his game gets better.

  7. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I can tell you right now why Gase dumped Ajayi, Ajayi was bitching at Gase for not getting enough carries in the game

  8. rgs322's avatar rgs322 says:

Getting ready to watch Wisconsin/Michigan. Defense, run game, big o-line, and TEs, Wisconsin is my kind of football team.

  9. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Look at how the amount of carries by Ajayi relates to winning and losing, if Ajayi runs over 20 times Miami wins plain and simple, when he doesn’t they lose.
I’d bet Ajayi was pissed over gases decision to not give him the ball, to make him watch his team get beat like that

    1. we survived SD, Cutler didn’t look bad Ajayi 28 carries rushed for 122 yards.W
    2. the Jets crushed us, Cultler passed for 226, ajayi ran 11 times for 16 yards
    3. new orleans crushed us, cutler threw for 164 yards ajayi ran 12 times for 46 yards
    4. titans Cutler threw for 96 yards, Ajayi ran 25 times for 77 yards W
    5. Atl Cutler threw for 151 yards, Ajayi ran 26 times for 130 yards
    6. NYJ Moore 180 yards, Ajayi ran 23 times for 51 yards
    7. Balt Moore 176 yards, Ajayi ran 13 times for 23 yards
    8. raiders 16 carries
    9. carolina 16 carries

    ———–
Okay! Now you’re talking! Good post.

I would attribute this to bringing Cutler out of retirement and knocking the rust off, coupled with the fact that he’s playing with cracked ribs now. What’s more, I do believe that our O-Line is significantly worse this year than last, and Cutler is trying to acclimate himself with a new team. These aren’t excuses, these are FACTS.

I think(?) the point you’re trying to make is that our team would be better this year with Tannehill rather than Cutler. However, that’s a moot point… Tannehill is out for the year, another FACT. We can’t play woulda, coulda, shoulda in lieu of these FACTS. We can only do the best we can do with the hand we’ve been dealt.

Again, this is NOT about Tannehill vs Cutler and who is the better QB… this is about what is wrong with our team this year. But for the sake of what seems to be your argument (not mine), I DO believe we’d be considerably better with Tannehill, of course! That, to me, is a NO BRAINER and for obvious reasons (see my 2nd paragraph above!).

MY argument is that we’re getting the same statistical output from the QB position (never mind WHO the funk is playing QB!) this year as we did last year. I think that’s where we’re getting our wires crossed, Bro. The QB position, IMO, is NOT where we’re failing this year. We can’t run the damned ball, making our Offense 1-dimensional. What’s more (and for the 43209752495th time, LOL), Gase keeps calling for dinks-and-dunks with Cutler’s rocket launcher.

Does anybody now realize why I’d theorized that Cutler may be nursing an undisclosed injury? Between all of the dinking-and-dunking and trying to avoid pressure like the plague, it DOES stand to reason. I’m NOT crazy…yet. LOL 😀

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I think we are not running as well because no one is respecting our pass game. It’s not just the OL. And yes I agree we need to improve the OL. But because of our inability to throw downfield teams are playing their safeties up in run support. I also don’t buy into the undisclosed injury theory because there are league rules about reporting injuries. Teams can get into serious trouble if they are found to be in violation of those rules. And yes I do think we would have been a better team with Tannehill under center this year. I get your point when you say it is moot to compare the 2 because Tannehill is injured and we can’t change that but my point was to those who are calling for this team to be blown up. I don’t see the need to blow up the team but rather we have holes to fill and we need our starting QB back

  13. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
Of course i’m cherry picking. It’s what we do around here! Lol Just like you are cherry picking with Tannehill and his ability to throw deep or manage the pocket LAST year when it has not been that way his whole career. Or pointing out wins as a positive for Tannehill now but said it was a “team” stat when we were losing. Frankly, I think his downfield throws…which are very few….improved more because of Stills and Parker than Tannehill…but maybe i’m cherry picking.

He is scared of taking hits.
    ———–
    😆
Tell that to SUH!!! Cutler is NOT afraid to stand in the pocket and take a hit! He’s one of the very best in the biz at standing in there and getting CREAMED. Suh has attested to as much and VERY much respects Cutler for it.

But wait a minute… what if Cutler has been nursing an undisclosed injury as I’ve theorized? Perhaps that would explain why he’s been acting “gun shy”?

All of the sudden, I don’t look so nuts after all… even after taking a lot of pot shots from others here. Hmmmm…

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Might be an injury, might be the OL or maybe a combination of wisdom, don’t come back like before, and ten million sounded nice for one year. But pretty clear that dude is gun shy for whatever reason. But then Matt Moore — who am not saying is in a given game — also figured back-up QB is a pretty smart long-term career move.

  15. Randy's avatar Randy says:

By the way, I definitely credit Tanny for being strong in the pocket. I think it had something to do with his very poor mobility INSIDE the pocket too, but the kid stood in there tough. Cutler definitely appears to be a little gunshy to me, but I kind of expected that from him. He’s always tended to throw fade away passes. He also manages the pocket much better than Tanny ever has.

  16. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Riley Ferguson with a bonehead pick but brought them back on next drive for a TD. WR Anthony Miller is kicking ass again.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

We are still just too easy to defend. It’s not all on any QB we trot out there. We need to figure out a way to change that. Gase has to take on the responsibility for that. We seem to just keep doing the same shit over and over.

  18. My boy Benkert 7 of 7 for 86 yds and a td vs Miami so far.

  19. wow. Benkert now 10 for 10 178 yds and two td’s as UVA goes up 14-0 on Canes.

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    lou,
I’m rooting for Beathard because he’s from Iowa, but his production is pathetic. Yes, it has to do with that craptastic team, but 4 TDs, 5 INTs, about 55 completion % and around a 70 QB rating is bad any way you cut it. Garrapolo not playing isn’t because Beathard is better. Beathard will be on the bench by the end of the year or next year if SF just doesn’t want to put G in a bad situation or trade him! Kudos to C.J. for playing tough and taking advantage of this opportunity though.

  21. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah Randy — Cutler just plays scared in the face of pressure. Can’t really blame him though….I would be too given what an NFL QB faces on any given play. Still a certain relative aspect when it comes to that stuff though. Some guys are just fearless in any given situation and some not….no matter the other kinds of talent.

Will be interesting to see if Tanny is the same on that end when he comes back after the two injuries.

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    lou,
You can say that, but his stats suggest otherwise. You point out his intangibles, but if they don’t result in actual production on the field, who cares?

“According to the arrest report … Maualuga was confronted by an employee at club E11EVEN about an outstanding $40 tab around 8:20 AM [this morning]. Rey allegedly became upset and refused to pay. The employee claims he asked him to pay again, and Rey grabbed him by the throat and shoved him. Rey was then kicked out by security and detained by cops, who arrested him.”

  41. Not like Maualuga was anything more than a stop gap to begin with and since the season is already over it really doesn’t matter. Only thing that does matter is this team is still a shit show because of stuff like this.

Poor leadership at the top of this organization shows big time.

  42. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

WHEN SUN-BAKED STADIUM was renovated, most of us HOPED that the Spirit of the historic Orange Bowl somehow would be resurrected at Steve Ross’s Stadium. WE hoped and we hoped as one non-winning season after another took place. Last year our hopes were raised as the Fins FINALLY had a winning season. But the Fins blowout loss in the playoffs was a precursor of things to come. The latest news on Melaleuga is yet another sordid chapter in what has become a disaster of a season for the Fins and what’s left of their fan base. Alas, this season will be looked upon as a failure by those of us who’d expected MUCH MORE!!!
    ————-
Yet, over the last three weekends, the Spirit of the historic Orange Bowl has arisen from the ashes!! –The Miami Hurricanes produced convincing, CRUSHING, victories over back-to-back weekends by clobbering a very good Virginia Tech team and a fraud of a team known as Notre Dame. But, today, it looked as though the Kings of Swag had met their match! Down 28-14, it looked to many that “The U” was done! But, behold, the Spirit of the Orange Bowl seemed to appear out of no where!! The smoke, the screams, the high energy of the historic stadium was apparent for all to see as the Canes, most improbably, rolled off 30 STRAIGHT POINTS and destroyed a VERY GOOD Virginia Cavalier team that, for the first 3 quarters, certainly made the founder of that grand university (Thomas Jefferson) proud!!

IT WAS MORE THAN AWESOME!! –IT WAS TRULY UNBELIEVABLE!! — It was a step back in time when all things were possible! FIVE National Championships? –YOU got ’em!! –An all time record 59 consecutive home wins over an 11 year period??? –HELL, YES, you can look itg up in the record books!!! HOWS about the PERFECT SEASON and 34 consecutive home wins by the Dolphins from ’71 thru ’74???? –OH, ABSOLUTELY!!! Our college team and our NFL team absolutely THRIVED in the horror show known as The Historic Orange Bowl!! Yes it’s NO COINCIDENCE that the longest home winning streaks in both major college football and the NFL were achieved at the incomparable Orange Bowl!!

But for so many, many years, the Spirit of the historic Orange Bowl seemed forever buried under a place now called “Marlins Park.” But, today, if only for a few hours, the Spirit of the Orange Bowl returned with a vengeance!! The Old Dolfan was a kid, again, screaming my lungs out and celebrating as only the young can! It was heaven!! The University of Miami has found the Spirit.

CAN DOLFANS, TOO, find the Spirit? I doubt it will happen under Steve Ross. It will take new, wise, leadership for our favorite franchise to return to its former greatness. BUT, thanks to taday’s events, I’m convinced IT CAN HAPPEN IN THIS VERY STADIUM!!
    ————
Some say I’m living in the past. To that I reply, “What a GREAT PAST TO BE STUCK IN!!” Maybe, some day, all Dolfans will, once, again, be stuck in a present that truly reminds us of those incredible days in the historic Orange Bowl.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Yeah — Hurricanes are for real for the first time in a good long time. And we know where they played and do now. Maybe that will bring some orange bowl magic for the Phins at Hard Rock manana. Was happy to see the reports that the turf is much better now……but we’ll see.

And, shall we discuss the idiotic draft choices made during the reign of Ross??
      ————
Losers always find an excuse. The NFL is investigating an allegation involving Jameis Winston and an unnamed woman. This was always the risk when the Bucs drafted Winston: their franchise quarterback would make the wrong kinds of headlines as a pro, just as he did in college. This time Winston is alleged to have grabbed an Uber driver in the crotch during a drive-thru stop in the early hours of March 13, 2016. If it’s true, it’s disgusting and suspension-worthy.

Winston says: “The story falsely accuses me of making inappropriate contact with this driver. I believe the driver was confused as to the number of passengers in the car and who was sitting next to her. I denied the allegations to Uber, yet they still decided to suspend my account.”

The driver says there was only one rider in the car. As of this writing, Winston’s camp has not identified any other passengers with him that night.

OD, these are the kinds of conversations that get snippy when people disagree. You and I disagree about Ross and the people in charge of the team and that’s okay. But we did make the playoffs last year in Gase’s first season. At 4-5 this season with the offseason and in-season we’ve had has sucked, but to doubt everything they do is unfair to me. A lot of stuff has gone on. We don’t have to agree on everything.

On a personal level, we’ve talked about about a lot of things in life that we agree on and to me none of this is personal other than football opinions. We all want the same thing, to see this team get to the highest of levels. Nothing I say is a personal attack on your character because I think you’re a good person. We’ve never met and those who have met you have told me you’re a great guy and I agree. Would love to meet you someday so you can see how easy it is to discuss this stuff on a more personal and less heated degree.

My comments about you living in the past is that it was a different era and today’s game is no longer the same. That’s my main point. The Shula days and 3-a-days when a HC ran the team overall is over. That’s all.

I hope you understand. I really don’t want to be yours or anyone else’s adversary. That is not my quest 🙂

    Go Phins!!!

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, Adam Thielen is the real deal. I picked him up in FF early on when I had guys go down and he’s been a steal. That kid can play and the Vikings knew it last year and gave him a nice contract. He can line up anywhere and run any route. 6-2 200, fluidly fast for the game, good football IQ and very good hands They talk about a QB’s friend, he’s that. He can play with any QB.

I’m actually thinking of trading Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff, Julio Jones and Odell Beckham in the offseason in my 4 protect league, and roll with Carson Wentz, Todd Gurley, Alvin Kamara and Adam Thielen. Then go heavy WR/TE with all my early picks. WR and even TE is the easiest position to find production.

I know you’re not a FF guy but just humor me and what I’m doing. I’m looking at the now and who’s producing. Also the future.

I wonder if with Maualuga gone do we just roll with Hull or mix and match with Allen and Anthony in the mix as well. Burke may move the LBs around moving forward. He said we have to mix things up better. We’re being too predictable. Same as the offense.

We need to win this week as we try to find the right groupings moving forward. Get to 5-5. 4-6 will suck and be a downer losing 4 in a row and lose the fanbase and confidence overall.

    • I know you want to be positive about this season and, believe me, I respect that. I really do. But, losing out could be a blessing in disguise because if could force the entire team to take a really good look at itself and understand that things aren’t as good as they may have thought they were and make the tough choices they may not have made if we won more games.

To me, if we win more games and end up going to the playoffs at 8-8 or 9-7 just because the other team became a shit heap isn’t going to get us to the rock bottom we need to hit to dig deep and take that hard look at every aspect of what we do to fix things. I fear they end up with a flawed outlook that things are better than they thought or not that bad and they just roll with the same old, same old and we end up stuck in perpetual mediocrity.

Then they stand there and scratch their heads and say, “just don’t understand it”.

  78. Employees are a reflection of the organization they work for. When organizations have principles and values they live by it is reflected throughout in everyone they hire from top to bottom.

So, yes, the fact that players do things like what Maualuga did is a reflection of, or on, the organization. A lot of organizations are monitoring social media accounts of employees to see what’s being posted and they hold their employees responsible for making derogatory comments. They know how things like that can reflect negatively on their companies and cause people to stop doing business with them. Look at how advertisers drop celebs or sports figures or stop promoting their products during certain television shows because of the negative aspect of these actions.

A team needs to do a better job of making their players understand what is and what isn’t acceptable and apparently the people in charge in Miami didn’t make it clear to the players that hanging out at a strip joint until 8:30 in the morning wasn’t acceptable behavior for one of their players.

So, yeah, I agree with OD on this as we’ve not done a great job from top to bottom with the organization and have hired people who have poor leadership skills and it also reflects very negatively on the ownership. It starts with Ross and he’s got to take responsibility for the shortcomings.

    • And just to expand a bit on this, yes these guys are supposed to be adults but they’ve been coddled most of their adult lives from the time they were recruited to play in college, throughout their four years in college and then in the NFL where they’ve earned a lot more money than the average working class individual.

From their college days to their pro days they’ve had people look at them in admiration for how they played a game and screaming their names and cheering for them and a lot of them have trouble dealing with the money and the fame.

So, yes, they may be adults in terms of age but just because they are big time jocks doesn’t mean there’s not a lot of mental midgets out there. The Spanish would call it Machismo.

  81. Tim,
I’m going to have to disagree (what are the chances, right?) with you about Tannehill being the starter in ’18 and the reason for that is because Tannehill doesn’t put butts in the seats. However, a player like Mayfield would. I’m not saying that I’m a big fan of his or that I think he’s worth taking the shot but he’s Ross’ type of guy even if Tannehill may be Gase’s type of guy.

I can picture he and Tannenbaum walking together something like this:

Ross is a businessman first and foremost. He’s got a stadium to pay for and he’s got to keep the seats filled. He’s not stupid. He pays attention to who the “hot” names are and will no doubt see all the hype surrounding Mayfield and will want Tannenbaum to go up and get him.

So, I’m fully expecting us to do that, especially if we are close enough because we end up with a shitty record.
