Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!  Enjoy the day with, family, friends, and have safe travels to wherever you’re going.  I hope there are some good games today, and I’m thankful we’re not playing today, because that wouldn’t be enjoyable at all! Don’t eat too much, ah bullshit, eat as much as you want!

I think the dolphins are not happy with the current LBers, i do believe they are a liability in coverage. it may be the reason we got Anthony and also cut Timmons contract to one year after he went AWOL, Let’s see how they do covering Gronkowski this week.

If the Draft were TODAY (and assuming we pick in the top-10)…

R1- Quenton Nelson, G, Notre Dame
    R2- Mike Gesicke, TE, PSU
    R3- Frank Ragnow, C/G, Arkansas
R4a- Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio
    R4b- Royce Freeman, RB, Oregon
    R5- STEPHONE ANTHONY
R6- Rashaad Penny, RB/KR/PR, San Diego State
    R7a- JULIUS THOMAS
R7b (from JAX for Branden Albert)- Logan Woodside, QB, Toledo

I just did my first mock for the 2018 Draft! I usually wait until January 1st! Pretty telling for our current state of affairs.

I think Rashaad Penny, RB, SDSU (Marshall Faulk U) has just become my FAVORITE prospect in the 2018 Draft. He’s reaching Dri Archer status with me!!! He’s going to rise on MANY boards before it’s all said and done in April (currently projected as a 6th Rounder). If I were to predict the future, he might go on Day 2 of the Draft, just as Archer did (3rd Round).

    Penny’s got a WOBBLE to him when he’s head-to-head against a defender… you don’t know WHERE he’s going to go next. But here’s the deal… he’s not 5’8″, 175 like Dri Archer: he’s 5’11”, 220.

7 career kick returns for a TD, 32 career rushing TDs with 7.2 YPC, 6 career receiving TDs (11.9 YPCatch… he’s a NICE receiver!), 4.42 40-low time, he’s got a stiff-arm, he can bowl people over, and he’s electric.

And if ya don’t like that he’s from SDSU, he beat Stanford this year (175 yards rushing). This guy is a FREAK RB… he’s like Ajayi with the hands of Landry.

Highlights or not, that kid has some good hands for a RB. …3:10 mark, damn. That’s Landry like. Plus, I love the return skills. Almost 400 yards rushing against Stanford and Arizona St, two PAC-12 teams, not bad.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That’s what I was thinking too Mike

But part of it might be his balance

He’s barely shifting his weight in that video and accelerating very quickly bc of that – so he might be a big reason he’s barely touched

Then check out what Penny did to Stanford…

  15. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

One last thing about my guy RASHAAD PENNY…

Penny has forced 65 (SIXTY-FIVE) missed tackles this year, which leads all FBS RBs (Stanford’s Bryce Love is second with 62).

The toughest run-defense he’s faced this season is NIU (ranked #10 in the nation against the run right now, 2.74 YPC against). Penny put up 107 yards rushing on 25 carries (4.3 YPC) with 32 yards on 2 catches and a TD. If you can break 100 yards rushing against a top-10 FBS run-Defense, you aren’t just a gimmick RB who plays in a weak conference.

MR. Wake isn’t forever, and we HOPE that Charles Harris will be all he was drafted to be in due time. However, we’ve had a MAJOR lack of a pass-rush this year. So why not add another pass-rusher in the mid-rounds (can’t have enough of ’em, right?)?

Have a look at Marcus Davenport, DE, Texas-San Antonio, 6’6″, 255, Senior, 7.5 sacks, and 15.5 TFL (<– #12 in FBS) this year. Currently projected to go in the 4th Round.

PIGGY: IT DOES MY HEART GOOD to see the one and only “Don of Miami” this Thanksgiving weekend! Of all the things I am thankful for, observing the career of Don Shula from close range has to rank right up near the TOP!! With Shula, there was NO 2-year plan or 3-year plan for success. There was only a 1-year plan. He took a 3-win team (1969) that had NEVER BEATEN THE JETS and NEVER HAD A WINNING SEASON to the PLAYOFFS HIS FIRST SEASON!! iN SEASONS 2,3, AND 4, HE TOOK OUR BELOVED TEAM TO THE SUPER BOWL!!! His 1972 Perfect Season is the standard BY WHICH ALL OTHERS ARE MEASURED. hIS 32-2 RECORD OVER 1972 & 1973 will never be beaten–NEVER!! His four consecutive undefeated seasons at home (1971-1974) will never be beaten–NEVER!! And his 26 seasons as Miami head coach was only stained twice by loosing records–another record that will never be beaten–NEVER!!

    —————-
None of those stats has anything to do with Ajayi being gone. Drake has one run of 66 yards and Damien has one run of 78 yards. I can counter with Ajayi’s 71-yard run with Philly.

    TDs since the trade: Ajayi-1, Drake-1, Williams-0.

Beasley is getting dopey again. We’re no better without Ajayi than we were with him. What’s more, who’s to say that Drake and Damien couldn’t have made those runs WITH Ajayi still in-house? Drake did it on his 5th touch of the Panthers game (he got 6 touches WITH Ajayi against Baltimore) and Damien did it on his 1st touch of the Buccaneers game.

The biggest difference is, we can’t WEAR DOWN Defenses without Ajayi and we lose TOP. We lost TOP by a whopping 11 (ELEVEN) minutes against the Panthers and 4 minutes against the Buccaneers. Our Defense can’t get off the field with Drake and Damien, but it COULD when we had Ajayi… hence our 0-3 record WITHOUT Ajayi against ‘meh’ teams.

Beasley, THIS is why our Defense has slipped over the last 3 games: we don’t have Ajayi eating clock and commanding 8 in-the-box.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Great points M13. And agree that it has less to do with Ajayi or not and more to do with the offense without him versus the one before. Two different animals. And like it or not, think the new one is more in line with what Gase wanted all along.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Thanks, Stanger. I’m sorry, but I feel that Gase made a GRAVE mistake in trading Ajayi. We all make mistakes and coaches aren’t any different.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Wasn’t a fan of the trade for the compensation at least, but see a lot of reasons why it was done. And that includes the shape of our OL and having a QB who needs to get the ball out quick….even if only cause of the OL. And sacks are way down as well.

CHANGE: Cameron Wake gets credit on sack for that bad non-safety call. So forget all that stuff we said about no sacks in 4 games.

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Even though it’s obvious that Phillips was the primary sacker and Wake flew in and got an arm on him. Fucked up play all around it should have been a safety but not for cheating refs. It should have been ruled a safety on the field but not for cheating refs.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I can’t understand why the league does not discipline refs who make a call like that which seems to not follow the intent and / or letter of the rules, just because they made an initial bad call and don’t want to admit they blew it.

You could see on that ref’s face that that is what he was thinking . His face had that look that people get when they are saying “cuz i said so, that’s why, so deal with it because i never change my mind once it’s made up no matter what the facts turn out to be.”

He was red in the face guilty. He knew he was wrong but is one of those people who can never admit they could be wrong.

SUNSHINE STATE COLLEGE FOOTBALL hasn’t just been about “The Big 3” for several years (That’s Florida, FSU and Miami for you non-Floridians). FAU won back-to-back bowl games during the Schnellenberger years. UCF won the Fiesta Bowl. South Florida has been to, and won, several bowl games. Today’s “fall from glory” by the “U” isn’t the only story. The REAL STORY is that both FSU and Florida have losing records, while UCF, USF and FAU are all headed to a meaningful post-season bowl game. Even FIU (in Miami) will be headed to a minor bowl.
    ————–
SON-OF-A-SON, you act like Frost would automatically JUMP at the Florida job. NOT totally sure that is true. He has performed a minor miracle in Orlando. And, if he chooses another job, NEBRASKA may be the choice of this former Cornhusker QB. Yes, I know UF has already interviewed Frost. But, he HASN’T signed the offer sheet, and may not. Some day, coaches will view “the little 4” Sunshine State schools as a final destination, NOT just a means to an allegedly “better job.” And that year could be FAR SOONER than the “Big 3” want to admit!

UCF WINS THE “War on I-4” in a game that truly lived up to, or EXCEEDED, the hype!!!–Game of the Year in college football in my opinion!!! Player of the game??–Quentin Flowers, quarterback, USF! Passed for about 500 yards and ran for lots of yards, too!! –It was a game for the ages!!! How any high school recruit IN ANY STATE can not be impressed is beyond me!! –If I was the President of Central Florida, I’d offer head coach Scott Frost an extension that equals what he’d make at Florida or Nebraska!!
    —————–
Tomorrow at 2 PM, Florida Atlantic plays at Charlotte in the last regular season game on the schedule. The Owls may rest a few of their front line stars IF they establish a comfortable lead. But, as any Canes’ fan can tell you, beware of over confidence when playing on the road. Looking ahead to the C-USA championship game the following week COULD BE DANGEROUS for FAU.

What a crazy game OD. Glad for UCF but feel bad for the guy who fumbled there in the end.

  66. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Guess I will try to catch VT vs Virginia and see what this Virginia QB is about.

  67. Tremaine Edmunds is the real deal.

  68. Why the love affair with Nelson? If you have a shot at Orlando Brown you take him and move Tunsil back to LG. That solves the issue on the left side. I’d take Brown over Nelson in a heartbeat.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

because Nelson is a 6’5 330 power guard and I’m tired of gettin’ DTs either bull-rushin’ us or standing up our OGs so we get no push.

I’m not looking at OTs until I hear James is done. Tunsil is my LT unless he sucks the rest of this year. If so, there are several good OTs out there and Brown is one.

I’m also really tired of “position flexibility” as it seems to really mean “mediocrity.”

  69. D's avatar D says:

That UCF USF game was awesome. One of the more exciting college games I have seen in a while.

  70. D's avatar D says:

Nelson is an awesome OG. As an OG prospect hands down Nelson over Brown. Brown might be a better prospect if we are looking for a guy who might play RT or OG for us, as in we aren’t sure we will have James when the season starts or if we have to pull his 5th year before the league year starts.

There are some good OL prospects most with position flexibility. Wynn out of Georgia is a guy who could play or backup at any spot.

I like Martinas Rankin out of miss state as well for same RT possible, OG if James will be back kind of player

    • I don’t know if Brown can play G and I wouldn’t want him for that but if he’s there and Nelson is there Brown is definitely the better prospect of the two. He’s a technician at his position. So you take him and either move Tunsil to LG or RT and be done with it. If you move Tunsil back to LG you solve the issue on the left side of the line.

I think Miami exposed Nelson as a slower blocker who will struggle with speed. I wasn’t trilled with that.

I really like Trey Adams as well as his center Coleman Shelton. Again, I can care less about the guard position and position flexibility at this time. Take the best prospect and be done with it. If the guy is going to be a stud at LT or RT I don’t care. The offensive line needs to be fixed and there seems to be some really good offensive line prospects in this upcoming draft.

  71. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This draft might be deep at OL. Seems to be so. That’s good for us. But I disagree with taking a guy at a spot we are OK at like OT (unless see my post above) and neglecting OG/C

because our offense is dying up the middle.

    • This is the same “argument” we’ve been having for years on this blog. I remember when we had Sean Smith and I was banging the table for a CB and a lot of people said we didn’t need one because we were okay at CB.

I really don’t care how we get it done. So if Brown is there and he’s the better prospect whether he’s a LT or not means nothing to me. Tunsil played LG more than well enough for us and we can move him back inside and fix the left side of the offensive line. So, we’ve got one guard position sewn up.

If we choose a guard, so be it, but I’d rather choose the better player than choose a guy just to fill in a hole at a position. That, IMO, is exactly what we did in picking so many defensive players in the last draft and, in particular, with the selections of Taylor and Godchaux. Wouldn’t be surprised if either is around in a couple more years.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

There’s a difference between a 1st rnd blue chip like Nelson (and Tunsil) vs. 5th rounders like Godchaux and Taylor. We HAD to draft defense throughout the 2017 draft, and we did very well with that. This year it is offense we need.

Harris will continue to improve and so will Tankersley. Godchaux and Taylor are good for what we got them for which is depth that can explode for a handful of plays each game. McMillan will be a long-time starter at LB. Guys get hurt. No one’s fault.

  72. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I would not be opposed to drafting OG in the first this year, as we really need a stud inside, but if we could get a top tier edge rusher, I’d take him in the first and get a 2nd round OG.

We need playmakers. Impact players. We also need our DL coach to scheme better so Suh is not routinely doubled on every play with little threat to the offense. i have started to see him line up standing up in a linebacker depth and picking his spot to rush through. I like that look.

  73. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

M13, I really like your guy Penny but think with his size and performance, he will probably go in the first 4 rounds. He would be a stud for us but I would really like to see us get 2 OL, TE, QB, and a CB or DL with our first 5 picks. Maybe a decent QB prospect slips to the 6th and you can get Penny in the 4th. I could handle that. Someone like Riley Ferguson could slide that far with his past history of being a rebel but think he has grown past that and teams will see that.

  74. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

I have been looking at RB’s who we could get in the 6th or 7th. Did anyone stay up and watch any of the Cal/UCLA game? I really like Cal RB Patrick Laird. Kid has some moves. Cant find much video of him. He could be there in the 6th if he comes out. 6′ only 200 lbs but has a frame to put on more muscle. He is a really good receiving threat also.

    • BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

He’s a one year wonder kind of guy but is explosive kind of runner. Has really quick acceleration. He probably stays at Cal another year. If so, he will be on my watch list next year.

  75. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

NAPLES SAYS “I’m not looking at Tackle until I hear James is done.”
HAVE IT YOUR WAY. JAMES IS DONE!! He was done the day he arrived. He’s only gotten worse over the years. The FACT that he was a 1st round pick speaks volumes about our NFL worst scouting department that has served up one blown pick after another in every draft since Ross took over the team. Need I need to remind you of Dion Jordan or a certain wide receiver named “CORROOOOO” who, between the 2 of them, ate up large portions of 2 entire drafts???
    —————–
TRUTH IS, with the possible exception of Tunsil, our O-Line is GARBAGE, pure and simple. And it won’t get better until we see dramatic improvement from our horrid scouting department, from our director of player personnel, and from our owner. And, right now, Ross fiddles while Miami burns!
    —————-
And, as for “position flexibility” equalling “mediocrity,” that would surely be true in the case of Miami’s O-Line. Indeed, being mediocre would be a giant step forward for this group. That said, Pat Elflein, who is currently kicking ass as Minnesota’s starting center, REALLY IS OUTSTANDING at both C and G, BASED ON HIS RECORD. Many on THIS BOARD strongly recommended taking “the Elf” in the previous draft, but NO-O-O-O!! Our idiot scouting department took a DE with 1 or 2 recorded sacks and an LB who played exactly one play of exhibition football this season. Those of you who think this “DOOFUS BRIGADE” of Dolphins’ leadership can lead us out of the jungle of despair are in for a rude reminder come draft time. Yes, boys and girls, ANOTHER draft will go by and the result will be the same. Miami will still have one of the worst O-Lines in the NFL. Only a NEW OWNER can turn around a once great franchise.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Raekwon’s injury cannot be ascribed to a drafting mistake. You cannot say that Andrew Luck was misdrafted because he has been injured a lot recently.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

YOU, can not compare Raekwon with Luck. But you did. I would have taken “ELF” over Raekwon all day every day so, yes, I CAN say, and I DID SAY that taking Raekwon over the Elf in round 2 was a mistake and, so far, the results bear me out. Anyone who wants to defend the current regime certainly is free to do so. But I prefer excellence to excrement. Those of you who prefer the record of the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” have chosen excrement, IMHO.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

OD — he was only saying that you can’t blame the injury on scouting. Raek had no significant injury history. It’s not all pro “current regime” or against no matter what happens.

    • I agree. This is like a broken record when it comes to this team. I can’t for the life of me fathom how they can be sitting there after FA and the draft and be thinking to themselves that things are getting better. Look at the cluster we’ve got now.

Hayes is hurt, Maualuga with a douchebag move, Timmons with another douchebag move, trading Ajayi. The list goes on and on. Think about this. William Hayes, Lawrence Timmons, Rey Maualuga, Jermon Bushrod. Four spots on this team that I can go back to at least 2010 and say we’ve had a chance to fill the holes for the positions these guys occupy and we’ve failed miserably to do so.

I also agree on James. Don’t know what they saw or what they thought they saw to take him in the first round but he’s another in a long line of picks that didn’t live up to where we took them in the draft.

The offensive line needs to be fixed and when it comes to how it’s done it doesn’t matter if we pick a guard, a tackle or a center. And I can care less about position flexibility. All I care about is the guy is top notch at what he does.

  76. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Going to watch Alabama RB Damien Harris today. He is their #2 RB behind Bo Scarbrough but leads the team in yards and ypc. He is another who could be there in the late rounds cause of Scarbrough’s size, he gets all the hype.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do not think our OL is pure garbage. Last year, they blocked for a thousand yard rusher and a thousand yard receiver and yielded fewer sacks than those of recent Miami history. Those are competency benchmarks that were met.

Pouncey was the best center in football for a few years, but his hips are compromising his power.
Tunsil is good and will be good enough. James is good and has stretches of greatness.

Bushrod tries hard, but he’s aged out and he’s done now.
We have no NFL-starting-quality LG at this time.
Or at any time this season.
Plus our OL coach was a hysterical basket case incapable of leadership.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So my point is, whether through the draft or FA, we MUST get 2 NFL-starting-quality OGs.
If one is Tunsil, then fine, but then we need a pro-bowl level LT.

    • When Ajayi had his best games last season Gase was using Young as a 6th offensive lineman and had Gray in there blocking as well. He went away from that after those games and we saw the drop off and he never went back to it. The only viable starter on the entire line is Tunsil. James is proving to be a panty waste, Bushrod was signed as a last ditch effort to get someone to fill in at RG, Pouncey is most likely finished and we don’t have a starter at the LG position. Larsen sure isn’t the answer.

So now, after all these years of drafting and filling in holes in FA we’ve still got nothing on the offensive line. This is pitiful.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

It IS distressing, but i think a lot of teams in the NFL are having OL problems. I think the DL has been getting the better athletes for about a decade, maybe because of the paycheck difference, maybe as well because of rules and schemes and trends.

I do not think James wears panties at his waist. He might not be the road grader YOU want, but to me that guy should be at the RG, which would help James considerably, as it should.

The league goes through these pendulum swings. i think it might start shifting with this draft, as it is loaded with quality OL.

  78. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Penny might rise to the late 3rd or early 4th and that might be fair value for him, but if that is so, then we can’t get that guy, because RB is not that large of a need for us. OG, OG, TE, TE, and a sack master of a Pass Rusher are all greater needs for us than a KR/PR type RB.

Now if he falls to the 6th, he’s a steal.
Also, FA might help us fill a need that would open up a spot to get Penny or a similar type skillset.

  79. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Chubb has 3 problems.
    1) He’s a bit too heavy in the bad way, especially for his position. He should be playing OG. (see my post above)
    2) he’s a hothead and a goofball personality-wise. He has a strong tendency toward being a dirty player.
and 3) he has benefited from being a man among boys for many of his games. He was one of those “early-bloomers,” which made him seem better than he is. As other guys catch up in maturation, he will lose that automatic superiority he had in the college game and be forced to rely on a level of athleticism he might not actually possess. His cousin is the same way.

i like the player, although he has looked more human in some games.
i just think a RB in the first 3 rounds is a luxury pick for us,
given the state of our OGs and TEs.

A serious injury to Drake or a solution to OG in FA could change our needs though.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Drake isn’t even a flash in the pan, he’s not a complete RB. I agree RB is not a value pick however Dallas did well last year taking elliot and Gurley is paying dividends for the rams, Barkley looks like the 2nd coming of Ricky Williams.

that said the value picks are QB…DE…T…CB in that order, we are set at QB,DE and T..
        CB could be a consideration.

T Baum has always had a strong running game so Barkley could be in their sights

  81. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

NAPLES; Your reference to some of our O-Liners as being better in the past is irrelevant. Right now, our O-Line, except for Tunsil, IS GARBAGE!!! Pouncey is done; Bushrod SHOULD have stayed retired, JAMES never was worth a shit and we have air holes at a guard position. Meanwhile, our head coach was bragging that “We are fine, all set” in the O-Line as Summer Camp ended. He’s either a liar or a damn poor judge of both O-linemen and O-linemen COACHES (snort, snort)!!
    ——————
Admitting there’s a problem is the first step on the road to fixing a problem. It’s clear the “DOOFUS BRIGADE” is either unwilling or unable to take that first step. Could it be that Gase’s over blown ego is getting in the way?????????????

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I do think Gase needs to mature a bit, and I think the Ajayi fiasco is ample enough proof of that, but his handling of Pouncey is more subtle but just as concerning.

I really disagree about your grading of James.

I agree that we have no bona fide NFL starting guards.

      • olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

THANKS for agreeing on 3 of my 4 major points, Naples. This puts you eons ahead of the “DOOFUS BRIGADE!!” Regarding James, if he is a starter on next year’s Miami O-Line, THAT will be an indication that Tannehill may be in for another short season.

  82. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I don’t think the offensive line from a talent standpoint is bad, i think it’s more of a lack of coaching, I think running the ball is way down on the list of priorities with Gase. Pass protection is his priority and that’s why we are weak at running the ball.
The guy wants to pass his way to the superbowl, how else can you explain the Ajayi move?

  83. BailBondMike's avatar BailBondMike says:

Rob, our OL is such a glaring need for me. If barkley were there, I would have to unfortunately pass and go OL no matter what in the 1st. It really sucks that we are still in this position of need. IMO

you don’t take a guard in the top 10 of the draft IMO, take one later on, we are set at Tackle, we took Asiata last year he should be ready to step up soon??

  84. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We might need to draft a pure sack artist, because we aren’t getting nearly enough sacks.
Maybe that is because we aren’t getting enough coverage sacks as Gase says.
But i do not think we can afford to draft a safety or CB with our offense the way it is.
On defense we are old at DE.

Well no one is comparing Raekwon to Luck in any way except that they were high draft picks who have injuries now, which make them currently have no value to their teams. That sad fact does not mean the people who drafted Luck were stupid. Raekwon’s injury does not prove that the people who drafted him were “doofuses.” It’s just bad luck. (Please pardon the pun.)

Tim, I agree that we need top talent but we don’t have enough picks in the 1st 3 rounds to do that. We don’t have much $ to hit FA next year without doing a lot of restructuring. There have to be certain players on teams deep at a specific position with players who could be poached for nothing who are better than anyone we could draft in the 6th or 7th round next year, heck maybe even the 4th round.

  94. The front office mishandled Maxwell in that the trade was a stupid trade to begin with. You trade down five spots with Philly and you get to eat a huge contract along with it and the only additional compensation you get for trading down and eating the contract is Alonso?

That trade was terrible from day one. You never eat someone else’s contract for them when they want to move up in the draft. I can’t imagine the conversation that took place for that one to happen. Seriously, what the hell were they thinking? It’s not even about the fact that Max isn’t with the team anymore. It’s just the fact that we traded down with Philly and also ate the contract.

That’s very poor on the part of Grier and Tannenbaum. The entire league was probably shaking their heads and laughing when they saw that one.

  95. When everyone gets a look at how slow McMillan is going to be getting to a play they’re not going to be happy with him. Not only does he not react fast enough after the ball is snapped he doesn’t have the ability from the MLB position to play sideline to sideline.
